Better Homes Magazine | HOUSE You don’t have to break the bank to buy contemporary art. Ikea has collaborated with eleven artists from around the globe to offer a limited collection of eleven posters. Art can bring walls to life, but the piece you hang also reflects you, so pick one that matches your personality. Better Homes loves this piece from Mandy Barker titled ‘And The Seas of Plastic’, which depicts debris under six oceans and continents in multiple layers on a black background. “It gives the impression of a universe, an almost hidden world under the sea, using the accumulation of plastic debris you find there,” says Barker of her work.

i love paint and although i appreciate textures on walls, i love seeing them in other people’s homes. However, it’s just not my personality. i like things white and clean, like a base and then everything else provides the colour and texture. Art. i also go nuts when i travel and buy a few pieces for the house like a sound bowl from Bhutan, or a graffiti print from a street artist in Buenos Aires.

Better Homes Magazine | HOME TOUR

efore Zen Interiors approached us about their client’s home tucked away near Meydan, I’ll admit I hadn’t heard of it. Intrigued with the opportunity, we headed out to the area to interview Joy Pan and her two adorable children, Jason and Xinhui (pronounced Shinquai). “I bought this home at the end of 2013, and didn’t have much time to think about it as it was selling quick. My husband wasn’t in town, so it was all done over the phone as it was a swift, spontaneous purchase,” the mother tells us. Chinese-national Joy has called Dubai home for 16 years, and lives with her husband, two children, and nanny. When she isn’t shopping for the children, or taking them to piano and Chinese language classes, she’s either at her spa Kung Fu Relaxation Centre at Barsha Business Centre, or home cooking and getting entertained by the little ones. To paint a clear picture, the development is ten minutes away from Sheikh Zayed Road’s Nad Al Sheba exit

The entryway is gorgeous, with lush trees and Burj in the backdrop

and leads straight into the Meydan area, albeit with a few turns to access the community through a little sandy path. “We were a little afraid of what we invested in back in the day, but now we’re happy as it isn’t too far away, just 20 minutes from the children’s school, and this area will be entirely developed very soon, with Mohammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum City located nearby.” The entryway towards the community is gorgeous, with lush trees, Burj in the backdrop, and decorative streetlights. A left turn and an off-road exit, indicated by easy-to-miss signage, takes you into the neighbourhood. As we enter Joy’s home, we are led into the entryway that opens directly to the the living room in front, dining to the left, and family room to the right. The floor plan is one of the main reasons Joy chose this home. Natural light only slightly seeps indoors, however a large door from the living room opens out to the backyard which will soon boast a zen Balinese scheme with water streams and a fruit and vegetable patch for children to learn about produce. The home is modern,

and refined, yet not too in-your-face with contemporary furnishing. Zen Interiors is behind the main pieces and accessories, with everything from the dining table to the couch, coffee table, and floor mats supplied by the brand. Rugs were customised to suit the rooms. For instance the family room which will be more of a play and study area for the children has a 16 coloured rug that flows from a deep purple to blue, segregating the area for the girl on one side, and boy on the other. A large bookcase and shelves are commissioned for the space, to cover the entire wall. It will even include stationery and easels as both children love drawing and painting. Arabian heritage is seen with the Mashrabiya – placed into the wall hollows – designed to match the main door’s intricate design. Zen Interiors created a matching shoe rack and ceiling panels to unite all elements of the space. The bedrooms are located upstairs, with the girl’s room boasting an elegant purple shade that Xinhui tells us she wasn’t sure of when they were picking fabrics. After Maud – designer at Zen Interiors – assured her belief, the little

A castle like vibe is prevalent, although in a grown-up manner, so that the bedroom doesn’t have to go through a major makeover during her teenage years. Jason’s room is a typical blue/grey scheme, while the master bedroom comprises forest colours as Joy and her husband preferred a relaxed ambience. The children’s beds are from Zen Interiors, while the adults bed frame was purchased years ago from ID Design. “We bought the mattress from China because it’s a bit hard to find soft toppers that are of good quality here in Dubai,” she says. The family gathers at the white glossy dining table that’s quite a surprising choice for someone with little children. “I was a bit worried about having white for a dining table, but this finish is glossy and easy to clean. Plus, children need to learn how to behave around a table, and take care of colours like adults would.” Joy loves cooking, and ensures her children eat a healthy home cooked

meal. Jason, on the other hand, aims to become a chef, and hones his culinary skills by baking brownies and chocolate chip cookies. Since the area is fairly new, with the family moving in just under a month ago, Wi-Fi connectivity is still an issue. However, Joy feels the lack of it is bringing the family together as the children aren’t sitting in their own rooms on iPads anymore. “We’ve been watching their baby videos, singing karaoke, and playing dance games. There is a nice breeze outside in the evenings, so they go out on their scooters to play.” Her husband is in charge of the gadgets, and recently picked up a Sony TV that can be controlled through the mobile – a feature the family are very fond of. The entire home is solar powered too, using up less energy for the air-con and lighting. While the area may be a bit out of the way for those who aren’t familiar with it, it’s about to develop rapidly in the next few years. By the looks of it, it is clearly a serene one to live at.

Ma r l i n

1. BL ACK OUT THE LIGHT

With the sunrise coming earlier now that we are in summer, it might be time for you to update your window coverings. Ensure you get a good sleep by filtering light out of your bedroom until it’s time to wake up. “Keep the curtains you have (if you love them) and add black-out panels to the back by using hemming tape and an iron,” says Michelle Dinsmore, Head of Visual Merchandising at Home Centre.

2.PRINTS AND PAT TERNS

Don’t shy away from mixing designs on your bed. Combine large prints with small ones, florals with geometrics on throw pillows; it will make your bed look more comfortable.

3.PERSONALISE IT

The bedroom reflects your individuality; so don’t be afraid to add knick-knacks that you love, artwork, or even a vintage piece of furniture. You can also turn

photos into art and create a feature wall solely for family pictures.

4.SCALE WELL

The bedside lamp and table shouldn’t be lost in comparison to the size of your bed. A four-poster bed calls for a large table and lighting element, while smaller fixtures can accompany low beds.

5.MOUNT IT UP

Not a fan of a conventional side table and lamp? Add a wall light in to eliminate the need to move around items on your nightstand. A ledge is an interesting alternative for a stand, too.

6. DON’ T G O OVERBOARD

Matching elements from your bedspread to the drapes may make the space seem united, but it will also resemble a hotel room, preventing it from looking homely. Choose similar hues if you have to, just make sure every fabric isn’t adorned with similar prints or patterns.

34

JUNE 2016 | www.bhomes.com

7. SIT IN ST YLE

Seating is vital in a bedroom, lending a cosy and inviting ambience. Add a little bench by the window, or perhaps a couch at the foot of the bed so that you can relax back with a cuppa.

8.HIGH MAT TERS

In most cases, the ceilings are either untouched or get a makeover with the addition of a chandelier. Go a little off track by inserting ceiling beams or panels to give it a French-country style effect.

9.THE MAT TRESS DILEMMA

No two people are the same, even couples, and that extends to their sleep preferences. “Opt for the dual core which allows couples to individually select their comfort levels. Also, the thermo-regulating outlast fabric maintains each person’s individual temperature all night,” says Asif Dhanani, Director at Magniflex.

12. FRAME THE BED

11.CLUT TER FREE

13. MAT TRESS MAINTAINENCE

Fresh flowers, fragrant candles, and linen sprays can uplift the mood of a room. Opt for lavender, jasmine, rosemary, and valerian to calm nerves, fend off fatigue, and put you at ease before bedtime.

Nightstands aren’t a space to empty out your handbag or stash unwanted items in the drawers. Keep it minimal and functional with just a lamp, your favourite books or e-reader, a glass of water, a clock and tray – for those who need a storage solution for jewellery and small items.

A canopy or mosquito net not only adds drama to the setting, it also allows you to sleep with the windows opened during winter. Girls love the drama of a net around their bed, making it feel very ‘princess’ like.

Rotate and flip the mattress according to the manufacturers instructions. Most mattresses wear out and become thin or lumpy, so invest in one after eight to ten years. Before buying, test the mattress by laying on it for five minutes to ensure you are getting your money’s worth and are happy with the product.

36

14. ALLERGIC REACTIONS

If you or anyone in your family suffers from indoor allergies, seal your pillow, mattress and box-spring linens with allergen-protective covers. Additonally, for more severe allergies or asthma you should wash bed linens weekly in 130° water.

15.ECLECTIC FL AIR

Break colour and design boundaries, and opt for a mishmash of pieces from around the world, gathered on your travels. Moroccan lanterns will look great in a corner, combined with an Indian embroidered throw or Persian rug below the bed.

How-to: GARDEN DURING SUMMER

THE RIGHT T YPE

There are certain types of grass suitable for UAE’s climate as it thrives during the scorching summer heat. Bermuda grass, Paspalum vaginatum (Durban), Paspalum vaginatum (SeaIsle) are a few great options that last long.

WATER IS ESSENTIAL

On hot days, it is best to water at night or early morning. This helps your lawn survive the heat. Around 10-20 minutes every other day is sufficient, with approximately about a minimum of 12 litres water per square meter.

SOIL MAT TERS

For grass to grow, mix your sandy soil with organic matter such as peat if you are using potable water. This helps hold fertilisers like cow dung, while keeping the soil moist four to five inches deep.

EDGY SIDES

Cutting the blade of grass is as crucial as the other steps as it can shock the grass roots while exposing stems, which tends to burn when in direct exposure with sunlight. Cut only the top one-third of a blade of your grass – the thin leafy part – to keep it in great condition.

37 JUNE 2016 | www.bhomes.com

“E

ntering PLAY guests are immediately transported by a breeze of luxury into a lively world filled with clouds and dreams of lights and gold dust. Dark, sculptural and vibrant, the entrance defines what is to come,” says Gregory Gatserelia, founder of the eponymous design firm. The restaurant, at Dubai’s H Hotel, boasts two bars, one created as a lounge area with views of the city and out to the sea, while the other captivates with modern design complemented by Art Deco elements. Dinner tables span the two. It’s no surprise that an interpretation of Dubai’s skyline served as the inspiration for PLAY. The Middle East’s City of Lights, with its energy-filled days and vibrant nights, is reinterpreted in the shapes, forms, lines, lights, and subtle reflections, indulging diners in a vibrant atmosphere. The dim, cosy lighting sets the tone: “The interplay of lights and shapes has resulted in a space as vibrant as the city it is found in, and this is complemented by custom-made furniture designed by our firm,” says Gatserelia. Boundaries are broken between the formality of typical restaurant seating and comfort. Gregory Gatserelia projects always have a unique signature that adds a special touch to the space and makes it exceptional. PLAY is no different. “Our ceilings are often interpreted as a ‘cover’ which is identifiable by how it permeates across the rest of the interior,” enthuses

Gatserelia. The ceiling, made of Italmesh material backed with an acoustic layer, was conceived as a sound absorber to create a peaceful environment where guests can listen to music and converse simultaneously without any effort. “We found a balance whereby the interior and the food tell the same story, a fusion of exquisite flavours between the East and West where Mediterranean

and Asian come togethe. The ceiling and floor materials were flown in from Italy because they are unavailable in Dubai, since their specificity makes it inconvenient to manufacture them in the UAE. Working with no financial restriction is obviously a blessing to any design firm, and one beyond the means of most homeowners, but what can inspire anyone thinking of giving their dining room a makeover is how Gregory Gatserelia didn’t hold back on details and put atmosphere at the forefront of his thoughts.

Mycity nina par varesh, founder of concept -me and d iaa-gram4 reveals her go - to spots in dubai

a bit about yourself ?

i’m a French national, originally iranian, and an architect.

Where do you liVe ?

i have three homes, in Dubai, Jeddah and Paris. But i literally fly every two to three days around the Middle East, and frequently to Europe. i chose to live in the Marina as it has such a diverse mix of cultures, with beautiful views of the boats docked out. the options for dining and nightlife are also endless. i don’t believe i am living in the Middle East, it feels like i’m on vacation in Europe.

Why Was al quoz chosen as a location?

Mainly for concept-Me and our new space DiaA-gram4, as it is in the middle of the industrial zone. i wanted to be surrounded by the elements that are shaping our daily environments as a design + built studio: carpenters, steel workshops, builders are part of our chore collaborators. in addition, the idea with our curated space of everyday unique pieces was to create a magical spot on an unexpected path.

of my favoured spots in town. i love the boutique scale, and comfortable sunbeds around the pool.

When nostalgic, i head to… La Petite Maison to sate my French side where i can order escargot and the best haricot vert in town. For comfort food and maybe to gain a kg on the spot, i head to iran Zamin for the best joojeh kabab (chicken dish) and masto khiar (Persian yoghurt and cucumber dip).

One of the most sought after villa communities in Dubai preferred by families is this self-sufficient neighbourhood offering much more than just housing. A nursery, school, clinic, golf course, supermarket and other amenities such as licensed restaurants and coffee shops are located nearby. Arabian Ranches is situated on Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed road, not far off from Motor City and Global Village. Apart from the amenities, parks, and offerings, the Ranches – as referred to by UAE residents – comprises two and three bedroom townhouses in Al Reem, Alma and Palmera. Some units go up to seven bedrooms, and you can also find independent villas here. Two

Thre e ho m e s w i thi n 15 m i nute s dri v e o f The A rc adia Pre p arato ry Sc ho o l

What sets your educational institution apar t from others?

The Arcadia Preparatory School is founded on a core belief that children learn best through a fully enriched curriculum that is exciting, meaningful, practical and adapted to suit the needs of each learner. Our aim, encapsulated within our school motto, is that our pupils will develop a lifelong love of learning. Our teaching staff were carefully hand picked from a global search for the very best, in partnership with Gabbitas Education, a 143-year-old British education firm.

What curriculum does the school offer ?

Within our new purpose-built, stateof-the-art primary school campus, we will deliver the British Early Years Foundation Stage Framework and the English National Primary Curriculum. For children in Foundation Stage we have created the Early Years Explorers (EYE) programme, which places a strong emphasis on engaging all their senses to interact with an educationally stimulating environment. For our primary aged children, we will implement a unique Enrichment Learning Programme (ELP).

Which grade does i t go up until?

In our first year of opening, we will provide Foundation Stage One (age 3) through to Year 4 (age 8). In subsequent years,we will add on Years 5 and 6, by which time we will have completed construction of our secondary school in JVT, to which our oldest pupils will graduate into.

Why should a parent enrol their child at your school?

Our extended school day allows us to provide pupils with enriched learning, extra curricular activities at no extra cost, and homework support within the school day, allowing parents to enjoy time with children after school. A generous scholarship of 30% subsidy is provided for children enrolling for the 2016-17 academic year. This will continue to be applied for every year a child is enrolled at school.

AED 2,100,000 4 BR 3,180 sq. ft.

Does the school offer anything else in par ticular ?

We have a strong focus on developing creativity and confidence, and identify four elements that classify key attributes for our pupils: active learners, creative artists, confident performers, and global communicators. Each objective is underpinned by an extensive programme that runs throughout the year and is founded on making learning fun, accessible and targeted to the needs and interests of each child. This programme involves children in arts, drama, scientific exploration and performance with exciting opportunities.

Ask the experts

Hous ehol d or c om mun i t y dil e mma? Our s ki l l ed pa ne l is h e r e to hel p Q. What are the top factors to consider when choosing a school for your child? A. Having been a head teacher at three locations I still find that parents want to ultimately know that their child is ‘happy’ in school. When exploring, parents should take note of a few aspects. For instance, teachers need to love their subject area but also teaching children. It doesn’t matter what part of the curriculum it is, they should be enthused about it. This will inspire children to learn. Every child is different and a great school will not only celebrate that individuality but create appropriate and specialised pathways via curriculum and learning. Personally, I would look for a school with a broad and balanced curriculum choice available to students. A good example would be that children could continue to study languages into

the senior stage of the sixth-form. Lastly, I would ask to see a schools’ extra-curricular programme. There is no point in having incredible facilities, without committed teachers offering students the opportunity to use them. Alan Williamson Q. I’ve been noticing a slight drop in rent. Is this just on paper or actually taking place? A. In most of Dubai’s residential communities, particularly freehold areas, it is cheaper to lease this year compared to the rates in 2015. Great new units mean landlords have to remain competitive especially in terms of cheques and pricing. The rental calculator by the Dubai Land Department’s Real Estate Regulatory Authority (RERA) provides the leasing rates for various apartments and villas around Dubai. The calculator, which serves as an online tool for determining rental increases, suggests price ranges and advises tenants whether or not they are entitled to an increase this year or not. The drop in prices varies from one area to another. Wafaa Ghannam Q. What do I need to know about motor insurance in the UAE before opting for one? A. Consider the realistic value of your car while choosing third party limits and make sure the liability corresponds

to the exposure on the road. Do not make a choice purely on the premium. Always double check the policy schedule to ensure the following three conditions are in line with your request: Limit of Liability and car value (sum insured), repair condition, and deductibles. Tariq Zietoun

WAfA A GHAnnAm

Residential Sales and Leasing Manager at Better Homes

Q. I’ll be going away this summer for a month. Are there any tips to maintaining my home? A. Protecting your home from electrical mishaps, plumbing disasters, and fires while you’re gone is important. Before you leave, unplug everything except the refrigerators and automatic irrigation system, this will minimise the risk of electrical issues and reduce energy consumption to the minimum. If you are going away for a long period, turn off the internal water valve – usually located near the DEWA box – in order to avoid any floods in case of a burst in pipes. Secure all the doors and windows, and disable your garage door opener, as it is technically very easy for unwanted people to open. Keep a spare key with a trusted friend or neighbour in case of an emergency while you are away. We always advise hiring a professional company once back from vacation, to ensure everything is functional and free from catastrophes. Mohamed Ayad

The heat can take its toll on your body, especially if you don’t keep hydrated and eat well. Here are a few tips to ensure you stay fit while the temperatures soar:  Amp up your antioxidant intake with seasonal fruit such as berries, as they assist with prevention of tissue damage, and are a great source of fibre.  Keep hydrated with water or green tea. Not a fan of the taste of water? Make your own infusion by adding cucumbers, lemon, and fruit to give it a hint of flavour.  Be ware of fruit smoothies. Make your own at home or request sugar and dairy to be omitted when buying one, as they can be extremely calorific. If you do make your own choose coconut water or fresh juice with ice, instead of milk, which can be quite heavy.

TRIED & TESTED We review the latest gadgets o n t h e m a rk e t

ElEcTRonIc popcoRn makER Now that it’s a bit too hot to enjoy outdoor activities, it’s best to host movie nights, and Euro Cup gatherings at home. Instead of spending hours in the kitchen preparing snacks, or loading up on packed crisps, opt for a swift option like popcorn. Besides, who doesn’t love a buttery bowl of this snack?

What we like?

The compact and snazzy popcorn maker is cute and incredibly easy to use – even a child can give it a go with adult supervision. All you have to do is add a scoop of the kernels inside the popcorn maker and wait for a few seconds to watch it pop. The measuring

scoop – above the popcorn chamber where the kernels are placed – melts butter as well. Additionally, you can mix in toppings including parmesan cheese, caramel, truffle oil, or a drizzle of sriracha sauce into your popcorn bowl.

Add a little sparkle to your weekend with this easy-touse beverage carbonator. Transform any liquid into a fizzy drink, you can opt to make refreshing soda water, mixed drinks or sparkling fruit juices. Just add your desired liquid to the bottle that’s marked with handy measurements on the side, pop a cartridge into the ‘wand’ and twist it onto the bottle. After about a minute of carbonisation – you’ll see and hear it fizzing – you can remove the wand and enjoy your bubbly beverage.

What we didn’t like?

It switched off for a few seconds, after the first batch, and we weren’t sure it was because the gadget heated up or it’s meant to rest. Either ways, the second batch of popcorn was prepared quickly and polished off within minutes.

What we like?

It doesn’t take up much space and is actually pretty sleek, so looks good on your kitchen

counter. It’s also super easy to use, and everything can be dismantled easily for quick cleaning. The bottle is small enough to fit into the shelves on a fridge door, which is ideal if you don’t want to drink it all at one time.

What we didn’t like?

Each cartridge can only be used once, which means you really need to stock up on these cartridges if you’re planning to use the machine frequently. We’re also not sure that the cost of replacing the cartridges makes it any cheaper than simply buying pre-carbonated drinks at the store.
