For Tina and Zac Jones, the move to Jumeirah Heights last month wasn’t just a chance to snap up a piece of prime real estate – it was a step towards creating a family home. Making the transition with newborn baby Ava in tow can’t have been an easy process, but today the family are a picture of calm. “We didn’t have time to waste,” says Tina with a smile. “With a baby you can’t afford to do that ‘camping’ stage that you so often have to do when you move in somewhere. We have had to furnish the apartment fairly quickly – it has certainly been a juggle!” The couple haven’t wasted any time in transforming the apartment’s second bedroom into a nursery, and the large living area is already beginning to feel like home. “The property is bigger than most two-bedroom apartments and we needed the extra

space,” admits Tina. “The style of the rooms and layout is very much our taste – we loved the double-height living area and floorto-ceiling windows as soon as we saw them.” For Tina, the move was a chance to indulge her passion for art and design – already evident in the quirky crockery and cute nursery pieces. The couple have sourced furniture from Bloomingdale’s Home, Galeries Lafayette, Marina and Zara Home – essential items in the unfurnished apartment. “We had to start from scratch,” Tina says, “but I love shopping for things for the home – Zac will tell you that! I’m an accountant by day, so this is a chance for me to put my mark on a blank slate. It’ll take time to get everything in place, but it’s really nice to create a home for our growing family.”

The up-and-coming Jumeirah Heights development promises plenty of amenities for the growing family – the community pool (which the apartment overlooks) and the nearby Jumeirah Islands Clubhouse, for starters. “We love being outside,” says Tina. “The beach at JBR is very close, and last week was Ava’s first trip to the sea – it was great. The Jumeirah Islands park is within walking distance too, so you can cycle and jog there whenever you want. This area is a nice go-between: in JLT there are lots of young couples and singles, whereas Jumeirah Islands has villas, so here we get a good mix. It’s a good place to be as a young family – it’s a really happy medium.” The well-connected location is all-important too – especially as both Tina and Zac have endured hefty commutes in the past. “We love how close we are to the shops and restaurants in Marina and Tecom – they’re just five minutes away. It’s great that we’re so close to Sheikh Zayed Road too; Zac travels to Abu Dhabi a lot and I work in DIFC, so this is a great central point for us.” So does living in a new area have any drawbacks? “Not at all,” says Tina; “we love it. When you say ‘Jumeirah Heights’, people actually know where you live – it’s already on the map, and that’s rare for a new development. When we first moved in, there were only nine other families in the building. Now, it’s filling up – we see more lights on at night, more cars in the car park. The progress with the finishing touches has moved fast lately: it’ll have a great atmosphere once it’s full. “We’ve moved every year since we arrived in Dubai – sometimes it feels like we’ve lived in every community in the city – but this is a chance for us to settle down as a family. We picked a ground-level apartment so that when Ava’s older she can scoot around outside while we keep an eye on her from the balcony – putting down roots is very important to us now.”

There are options to both rent and buy in this development, making it a perfect place for an investment or a temporary fix. It’s an all-apartment community (if you’re after a villa, look to nearby Jumeirah Islands), with a choice of twoand three- bedroom properties. The layouts here are different from those you’ll find in the rest of the city – perfect if you’re looking for a property with personality. The road links are great for Abu Dhabi and Dubai (good news for commuters), and the area enjoys a quieter aspect than most other central residential hubs. The properties are filling up quickly, so register your interest soon.

Right on the edge of JLT and Marina, you’ll have a plethora of entertainment options to hand: head to JBR beach, hang out in the coffee shops at JLT, or sample the nightlife on The Walk. Even closer to home you’ll find the Jumeirah Islands Clubhouse – a sociable residents’ venue with an elegant restaurant and coffee lounge. There’s a real community feel here already, with a climate-controlled swimming pool, sauna and gym – and, better yet, Jumeirah Heights residents benefit from a discounted membership. The nearby landscaped gardens make an attractive venue for a leisurely picnic too.

The convenience stores in JLT are the closest options for picking up groceries, but for the daily shop (and the occasional retail splurge), Marina Mall (Waitrose), Mall of the Emirates (Carrefour) and Ibn Batutta Mall (Geant) are just a short drive away. For eating, the Jumeirah Islands Clubhouse is a fail-safe venue, but venture a little further for cafés, takeaways and eateries in JLT and Marina – you’ll find everything from fish and chip shops to fine dining within easy reach. Better yet, the area is well-established enough to be on the map – so if you’re ordering in, you won’t have to direct the delivery driver...

You won’t find any schools right in the Jumeirah Heights vicinity, but there are plenty within a 15-20 minute commute. For starters, look to Wellington International School (British curriculum, wellingtoninternationalschool. com), Emirates International School (IB, eischools.ae), Dubai British School (British curriculum, dubaibritishschool. ae), Regent International School (British curriculum, risdubai.com), Dubai International Academy (IB, diadubai.com), and Dubai College (British curriculum, dubaicollege.org). IMF’s July report downgraded the 2012 global growth rate from 4.1% to 3.9%. Germany and France, the strongest economies in Europe, have both had a downgrade in their credit rating. Europe’s peripheral economies like Greece, Ireland and Portugal are back in recession, and the core group’s outlook is quite negative as well. The outlook in the UAE is the opposite. According to Mastercard’s worldwide index of Global Destination Cities, Dubai has been ranked as number 8 in tourist numbers, above New York, Rome and Barcelona. Hotel occupancy rates increased by 3% yearon-year reaching 77%. The

average daily rates registered an 8% increase, reaching $224. The UAE’s non-oil foreign trade also grew by 23%, with Dubai accounting for 74% of it. The UAE’s population rose from 7.51 million in 2009 to 8.11 million in Q3 2012. Dubai’s population grew from 1.9 million to 2.1 million in the same period. UAE real estate in the first half of 2012. Mortgage rates in the UAE have fallen too: average rates for 2009-2011 were 7%. The average interest rates for mortgages are now around 5%. With the low rates, lower entry level property prices and rising rents, yields on some property investments are touching 7%. These factors have all contributed to the changed sentiment in UAE real estate. By Q3 of 2012 villa prices rose by 23% year-on-year reaching Q1 2008 level. From this point they need to grow by another 30% to reach the highs of Q3 2008. Apartment prices, however, rose by only 4% and are much below the 2008 levels. December 2012

Perfect party planning ‘Tis the season to be jolly – and what better way to celebrate than by throwing a bash at home? Whether it’s a kiddies’ knees-up or an elegant evening soirée, follow these simple steps for a night to remember

Pick a Theme If you’re not sure where to start, think about creating a theme – party planning can be daunting, and a theme will help to tie the event together. It doesn’t have to be seasonal – what about an English garden party, or a South African-style braai? Consider the number of guests, their tastes, and your budget – planning a sit-down meal is near-impossible on a shoestring, for example, and you don’t want your guests to feel you’ve scrimped on supplies. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box – if it’s a New Year’s Eve bash, try recreating a New York-style street party with famous fancy dress, American-style snacks, and a playlist of USA classics. Keep it exclusive Everybody wants to feel like an honoured guest at a party – so make sure the invite

list is exclusive. Keeping track of numbers can be hard, so create a list of everyone you’ve invited, as well as likely plus ones. For sit-down meals, this is essential – after all, you don’t want the stress of last minute catering – and for more informal affairs it’ll help to keep numbers manageable. Plan for drop-outs, too – not everyone will be able to attend, so you may as well make allowances now. Friends with guests for the holidays may want to bring them along as well – but be wary of overstretching yourself to accommodate them. Send out invitations Make it official by firing out invitations at least two weeks in advance – your guests will need time to plan, and diaries often fill up quickly over the winter season. If time is short, a simple phone call should suffice, but nothing builds momentum for

a party quite like an invitation delivered by hand. Design your own to make guests feel privileged, and enlist family members to help out too (kids will just love colouring in or gluing glitter to personalised cards). Make the party’s theme clear on the invitation, and always include an RSVP deadline – make it at least 5 to 7 days before the event itself. Think with your stomach “Design your menu to match your party,” says Katie Harvey from Dubaipartyqueen. com, a one-stop website for event planning in the UAE. “Certain dishes can bring people together, such as raclette. If you’re on a budget, ask people to bring a dish each – it’s a great conversation starter, with a good variety of food and less headache for you.” If you’d prefer to steer clear of the kitchen, consider hiring a catering team

– ask your favourite restaurant if they’d be willing to take up the challenge. Many places will provide staff and dining sets, so you’ll keep fuss to a minimum. Create an impact Inventive decorations can really set a party out from the crowd: not only will your home look the part, but your guests will love that you’ve gone to so much effort. Again, tailor the decorations to suit the theme: if it’s a formal dinner party, create place cards and centrepieces to set the scene at the table, or add theatre to an intimate barbecue with tealight candles and pretty lanterns. “Even simple balloons can transform a space,” says Katie. “Most decorations can be made at home with a sprinkle of imagination. Even better, incorporate your guests with photos or by using their names – it will make everyone feel included instantly.” Set up stations If you’re planning an informal party with plenty of mingling, don’t put all the food and drink in one area. Avoid traffic jams and encourage people to mix by spreading fare out in different areas – like a brunch event at home. For sit-down meals, set the table in advance to ensure there’s enough room for everything. Get creative with the menus – print out one for

each guest’s arrival, and don’t forget to make name cards for everyone. Plan the seating arrangements far in advance, and don’t be afraid to mix up old friends with new, couples with singles, and young and old – chances are, all your friends will find something in common. Get musical Music can make or break a party, but it needn’t be complicated. Again, think about that theme – what fits? If it’s a retro knees-up, consider hiring a jukebox, or playing tunes through an old-fashioned radio. For informal events, a simple iPod and speakers set-up will work a treat: create a playlist that’s far longer than you anticipate needing, and place the speakers in a prominent area. Live music is a great alternative if you’ve got the budget, and can form an interesting central focus for the party. Be sure that whoever you hire is up to scratch, though – ask for a demo CD to avoid any nasty notes on the night. Don’t forget the kids If you’re throwing a children’s party, planning is paramount. Keep the momentum going with a bottomless stock of party games that are suitable for the little ones’ age group. Very young children will be discovering timeless classics like

pin the tail on the donkey and musical chairs for the first time, whereas older kids will enjoy treasure hunts, crafting parties or piñatas. It’s always a good idea to make them feel included – even if they can’t come.” Don’t forget to make or buy enough ice, either: you’ll always use more than you think you need, so store extra in a cool box next to the freezer. “Don’t forget about the cleanup,” warns Katie: “so much effort goes in to preparing for the night that the aftermath often gets forgotten. Organise a cleaner for the next morning, and your home will be spic and span come lunchtime.” Finally, don’t forget to enjoy yourself – the more relaxed you are as a host, the happier your guests will be. After all, isn’t that what parties are all about?

Generally all plants require water and it is not advisable to leave your plants unattended. Set the timer to 6am and 5pm and the watering will be taken care of. If you don’t have time to fit irrigation pipes before you go away, enlist the services of a gardener. If you’re worried about the outdoor furniture, buy a cover – you can get superb tailor-made ones which will protect your belongings from the elements. Should you have a sheltered area, move the furniture underneath it for added protection. If you have water features, they will need to be run at least twice a week for half an hour as the water is likely to stagnate – and algae formation would mean you’d have to replace the pump. Ask a gardener or neighbour to pop round and put it on for 15 minutes every day to keep the water fresh. How to cook the perfect festive feast Don’t be daunted by this age-old tradition: your guests will love these fail-safe seasonal dishes

For chef Christopher Driver, the winter season offers the perfect chance to indulge in his greatest passion: traditional British cooking. Having worked in some of the most revered kitchens in the country, Driver creates one of the finest yuletide feasts in Dubai – try it for yourself at Alfie’s in Jumeirah at Emirates Towers, where Driver is now chef de cuisine. “The Festive season is a very special time of year,” he says. “It is one of the few times that entire families unite with each other and enjoy a shared meal. You must have a good starter – smoked salmon is such a treat at this time of year. And of course you can’t go wrong with a turkey, but if you want something a little different a goose is a very tasty alternative. I like to cook both… And if that’s not enough, a fruit cake or pudding makes a perfect end to the meal.” So what does every aspiring British chef need in their pantry? “Seasoning! Salt and pepper are simple, but should never be disregarded. And although it’s a cliché – the most essential ingredient is the love that goes into the food. 120g smoked Scottish salmon 120g cured salmon 120g fresh Devon crab 30g cucumber 30g fresh tomato 20g chives 10g chervil 15ml mayonnaise 5g shallots Salt and pepper, to taste

1. Slice the cured and smoked salmon into strips, and arrange as a base on a serving plate.

2. Finely dice the shallots, cucumber, chives, chervil and tomatoes, and mix with the crab meat. Season with salt, pepper and lime juice to taste, and combine with the mayonnaise. 3. Arrange the crab mix in a ring mould on top of the salmon, remove the mould and dress with salad leaves to serve. December 2012

2kg whole fresh goose 120g goose giblets 350g veal mince 100g breadcrumbs 2 eggs, beaten 180g Granny Smith apples, stewed 100g soft herbs 30g shallots, sautéed 5g garlic 150g chestnuts 350g potatoes, peeled and chopped 200g shredded savoy cabbage 200ml veal Jus 50g butter Salt and pepper, to taste

1. Preheat the oven to a

medium temperature, and separate the legs from the goose breast. Roast until cooked; meanwhile, prepare the rest of the dish.

Serves 8

2. Combine the veal mince, breadcrumbs, eggs, giblets, apples, herbs, half the quantity of shallots and garlic to make the stuffing mixture. 3. Boil the potatoes until just cooked, then drain. Crush with a fork and add the rest of the shallots and garlic, goose leg meat and chestnuts. 4. By hand, shape the potato and goose mixture into palm-sized discs, dip in the beaten eggs, flour and breadcrumbs, then pan-fry in butter. Place in the centre of the dinner plates. 5. Lightly sauté the cabbage, and apply on top of the potato discs. Remove the goose breast meat from the oven, slice on the bone, and arrange on the plates. Drizzle with the heated veal jus, and serve. 1. Mix together the orange and lemon juice, then add the dried fruit and allow to marinate for 3 days.

2. Combine the suet, sugar, breadcrumbs, ginger confit and cake flour until well-mixed. Then, add the eggs, juices, dried fruit, mixed spices, salt and milk. 3. Bake in a cake tin on a medium heat for 45 minutes until set. Serve with vanilla ice cream or custard.
