GROWING UP

The first three years of a child’s life is a critical time for forming the foundation for a healthy childhood. Guest speaker at Elite Babies & Tots and consultant pediatrician at Healthbay Polyclinic (healthbayclinic. com) Dr Rita Kovesdi gives her top development tips…

1

MUSIC STIMULATION SESSIONS: The hearing sense of a child develops pre-birth as a foetus in the womb so they can respond to sounds and music very early on. It improves their early communication skills and sharpens their minds, while also serving as a good tool for calming them.

BABY MASSAGE THERAPIES: Massaging your baby regularly can improve their physical health through improved blood circulation and keep their skin hydrated. It can also help to ease digestion, colic issues and constipation, which are common in newborns. The soothing activity can also help them sleep better and make them feel nurtured and protected. PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES: From the time an infant can be placed on their tummy (under supervision), they can start developing their core strength and balancing skills, as well as their gross motor skills. In babies, these movements include crawling, rolling, sitting, standing and walking, to more advanced movements for toddlers, such as jumping on trampolines, climbing, catching a ball and riding a bike.

INTELLECTUAL CHALLENGES: It is important to start developing children’s minds from an early age through simple exercises and developmental toys, and the use of colours, numbers, shapes, themes and fun activities to familiarise them with the surrounding environment. Interactive playtime is also advisable.

HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES: Items, such as Play-Doh, colouring crayons and building blocks are a good choice for interactive playtime so a child becomes accustomed to using their hands and developing their fine motor skills. Ensure all such activities are carried out in a safe environment and under supervision.

PLANNING AHEAD FOR SENIOR SCHOOL ENTRY

For many Year 6 children in the UAE, it’s ‘big school’ selection time. So what do parents and pupils need to do? Firstly, be aware of registration deadlines. Secondly, understand the process you have to go through to make sure it is the right school for your child. Ensure you have filled out all the right forms and paid any necessary deposits. Many schools will hold open days in advance of assessments, so you can be sure you are making the right choice. Be aware of what the assessments will consist of. Independent education consultants Gabbitas (gabbitas.ae) advises families to start the process in plenty of time, so the admissions process can be as smooth as possible.

GIVING BACK Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) has recently launched a new volunteering programme across 25 Abu Dhabi community schools. Through utilising the expertise of volunteers, the programmes, workshops and activities will help promote the culture of volunteering and knowledge transfer. The plan is to bring the total number of community schools to 30 by 2020. Those interested in joining the programme can register at adek. abudhabi.ae or visit a community school you would like to volunteer with.

LIFE IN THE FAST LANE Raising the flag for women in motorsports, Dwight School Dubai has submitted the first all-girls team from the UAE to the global F1 in Schools challenge, a social enterprise that raises awareness of STEM and Formula 1. The Grade 9 students; Stella Langenbach, Romy Wegmann, Amber-Rose McCauley, Sofia Langthjem, Leila TaylorDamouni and Chiara Pistilli have been tasked with collaborating, designing, analysing, manufacturing and racing a miniature, compressed F1 car of the future.

HAPPY STUDENTS IN DUBAI Four out of five students (81%) reported high levels of satisfaction in life, according to new data revealed by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA). More than 95,000 students were surveyed in the second year of the Dubai Student Wellbeing Census, with teachers and school staff also participating.

SEND FAMILY GOALS

A FAMILY THAT GROWS TOGETHER…

Start the year as you mean to go on with some shared goals and positive intentions

Healthy bodies, healthy minds One thing our generation is better at than our parents’ generation is recognising the importance of our children’s emotional and mental health. Mindfulness, children’s yoga and meditations and school-based wellbeing programmes are a good start in the right direction, but there is a lot that can be done at home, too. An international study, which included more than 250,000 participants, found that regular physical exercise reduces the risk of depression across all age groups – not to mention that it helps guard against obesity, developing type 2 diabetes and other high-risk health issues. Marcus Smith, founder of InnerFight gym and fitness community, who ran 30 marathons in 30 days for the Dubai Fitness Challenge last year, is a staunch advocate of the importance of sport in families’ lives. “I think kids need to be involved in sports from the minute they can walk, so that this environment becomes their norm,”

he says. “Kids attempt to mirror what they see in their parents. So if they see them eating poorly and not exercising, they think that is okay. The responsibility lies with the parents.” 15% of children in the UAE are obese according to the World Obesity Federation

Flourish with gratitude Once upon a time, we were told that an attitude of gratitude – being grateful for the small (and big) things in life – can make people happier. Now a recent study published in the Journal of Positive Psychology reports that gratitude can help balance out the negative impact of materialism – something that has been proven to be linked to anxiety, depression, addictions and more. In his book, Flourish, Martin Seligman, one of the godfathers of the positive psychology movement, recommends a variety of exercises in order to foster gratitude in yourself and your family. One of which is called the ‘What Went Well’ exercise. This involves taking a few minutes

“Take a few minutes each evening to write a list of three things that went well that day”

each evening to write a list of three things that went well that day and why they went well. This can be done individually, or together as a family. “We think too much about what goes wrong and not enough about what goes right in our lives,” explains Seligman. “This focus of negative events sets us up for anxiety and depression. One way to keep this from happening is to get better at savouring what went well.” 25% – the increase in happiness levels from adopting an attitude of gratitude, according to research from the University of California

Love the planet Getting green and exploring the great outdoors together is a great way of bonding with your children, says Sophie Gamble, owner and managing director of kids’ adventure experience company Touring Tykes (touringtykes-me. com). She says, “For kids, it could just be a trip to the backyard and they will feel like they have gone somewhere. Having a parent with them makes everything more special. Making the effort gives us all a time out and sense of enjoyment.” At Touring Tykes, Gamble and her team offer activities for three- to fiveyear-olds spanning everything from cooking to sports, music, animal interactions, arts and crafts and more. However, she says that keeping it simple sometimes is just as

FAMILY GOALS

“Children will do as we do, and not as we say” essential for children. “The very best and the most cost-effective activity to do with your kids is to go to a park and be a kid with your kids. They love it! Whizz down the slide, have a go on the monkey bars and play together. We don’t get a lot of time outdoors in the UAE, so we need to make the most of it when the weather allows!” 78% of teachers believe children who spend regular time in unstructured outdoor play have better concentration and better test results, according to a study by the National Wildlife Federation in Canada

Establish healthy screen time habits Parents tend to be hot on the heels

8

of their children when it comes to screentime, but not as great themselves at staying away from their attention-sucking devices. As such, a shared family-wide commitment to reducing screen time can have huge benefits for you all, as individuals and as a family unit. Anya Kamenetz, journalist, mother of two and author of The Art of Screen Time: How Your Family Can Balance Digital Media and Real Life, says that technology isn’t all bad and that we shouldn’t vilify screens – and ourselves – if they have a place in our family life. However, she does offer some good tips for making sure it is kept under control. “Don’t use screens as a default time-killer or background noise. The constant blaring interferes

with parent-child conversations, which has been shown, in turn, to hurt language development. It also distracts children from their play.” She adds, “Cultivate children’s ability to amuse themselves from a young age and you will be doing them a long-term favour. If you need to wean them off new media, offer an incentive: say, you can watch the show after you play for 15 minutes on your own. Gradually lengthen that time to 30 minutes… And by the way – the ‘not too much’ rule means your phone should go down as well, for the most part, when around the people who actually live in your house, as opposed to virtual presences. Children will do as we do, and not as we say, in this as in most matters so we must lead by example.” 42% of households with children admit that their TV is always on, or on most of the time, even when nobody is watching it, according to a study by Common Sense Media.

MUM’S THE WORD Meet the mums who are making it their mission to give a voice to parents on education matters in Dubai

T

hree years ago, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) put a call out on their social media for a dynamic group of parents to provide a voice for mums and dads within the community. The team of five – Therese Sequeira, Nora Khorshed, Anisah Ismail, Aruna Shenoy, and Moza Al Marri – were selected to act as ambassadors, community outreach workers and parent advisors. They convene monthly at the KHDA office, although they’re in touch with each other on an almost daily basis. One of the first projects the team worked together on was raising the profile of teachers through ‘Teachers of Dubai’ (@teachersofdubai), an online initiative that shares teachers’ stories. So far, approximately 600 teachers have been interviewed for the project and a book on their work was released on World Teachers’ Day in 2017. “People don’t usually ask teachers about themselves, so our interviews reveal what makes them special,” enthuses Anisah Ismail. “We’ve discovered roller skaters, PADI divers and even a teacher who was previously in a circus. Many have lived in so many different places; and others have told us about who inspired them to become teachers.” The project also offers a lovely way for teachers to stay connected with students, past and present. Indeed, with some teachers having worked in Dubai for up to 30 years or more, comments on the Instagram account often come from former students, who are now adults.

“The team act as parent advisors and ambassadors” Managing parenting workshops for KHDA The team’s role has since evolved to managing the KHDA’s Positive Parenting workshops, which gives parents access to some of the biggest international names in positive parenting, such as author Christopher O’Shaughnessy, who gave a workshop on helping third culture children thrive; children’s

author Rachel Hamilton who spoke about encouraging children to read; and Jumeirah English Speaking School’s head of athletics Roger Nicholson, who discussed developing good sportsmanship. What’s more, the workshops and talks, held at KHDA’s office, not only provide support for parent-child relationships; they also offer a bridge between parents. “Parenting can

be lonely,” reveals Therese Sequeira. “So when you bring a group together who share similar concerns, the conversations between those parents become really useful.” During the recent workshop on third culture kids, the attendees didn’t want to leave once the workshop came to an end, so they continued their discussions over coffee on another floor of the KHDA building. “One of our biggest successes is bringing together parents, who would not otherwise get that opportunity.”

with Dr. Abdullah Al Karam, chairman of the board of directors and director general of the KHDA, supporting the communication between him and parents, while their work also includes influencing any planned policy changes. Aruna Shenoy has been involved in the Dubai Student Wellbeing Census, highlighting support for adult wellbeing, and in June 2018, she represented the parents of Dubai at the World Positive Education Accelerator (WPEA), organised by the International Positive Education Network (IPEN), in Dallas, Positive partnerships Texas. “One of our roles is bringing The KHDA parent team acts as a people – educators, parents and the direct link to parents, listening to their KHDA – together,” she says. “Once you concerns, which include provisions have the three groups working together for special educational needs and to encourage children to love learning, disabilities; balancing school, homework the kids will receive the benefits of that and leisure; and issues regarding collaboration and flourish.” technology, among others. These are then fed back to the appropriate A unique experience channels. The team regularly meets As representatives for parents and

“We bring people together” the KHDA, the team’s enthusiasm is infectious. “One of the things I love about the UAE is the positive human values that are promoted each year by the government,” says Therese. “The Year of Zayed was pretty big, with the schools taking it on board, and the values trickled right through society. I’ve never heard of anything like this happening anywhere else in the world and I’m looking forward to what the Year of Tolerance brings.” The team also love the experience of living with so many nationalities in the UAE. “I’m a local and I chose to send my children to an international school,” says Moza Al Marri. “They are lucky to be in a school with up to 100 nationalities and to have friends from around the world. The experience teaches them tolerance, acceptance of other cultures and resilience because we have transient populations. Plus, the teachers are skilled at helping children make new friends and settle in.” The team visit schools to meet teachers regularly. “We discover how many amazing and innovative schools there are in Dubai,” says Therese. “And if we can be part of sharing the positive activities that are happening in schools, then we’re happy to do that.” teachersofdubai@khda.gov.ae

AND SO TO BED

When children and teens get a late night, it’s more than just getting them out of bed that becomes more difficult. Concentrating, organising, mood and memory are all impaired by missing out on necessary zzz’s. Here’s how to help them get their quota...

I

t’s easy to spot tiredness in a child. Moodiness, more arguing, more whining, quicker to get tearful… Behaviour which normally gets met with a knowing, “Someone needs an early night,” from a parent, much to the child’s chagrin. It’s as if they are simply less capable of dealing with emotions when they are tired. Which, in actual fact they are. When children are tired, everything is harder for them – often without them even realising it. There have been thousands of studies over the years, showing the necessity of sleep for children – and for adults – in order for them to achieve their potential, physically, mentally, academically and socially. One of them, carried out by the McGill University and Douglas Mental Health University Institute, found that just 18 extra minutes of sleep each night during the school week can produce a

16

noticeable improvement in a child’s school grades. Worryingly, another from the American National Sleep Foundation found that a quarter of parents estimate that their kids get at least one hour less sleep than the ideal amount.

FOUR WAYS LACK OF SLEEP CAN IMPACT YOUR CHILD AT SCHOOL Planning and problem-solving Lack of sleep can temporarily inhibit your child’s planning and organisation skills. This means they could be wasting time looking for lost items, or trying to find their notes from a class, or trying to remember when their homework is due, or struggling to even get started on a project, rather than actually working.

This can also affect their ability to manage their time efficiently, which is paramount in a test scenario.

Mood and behaviour Tired children are moodier and have a tendency towards silliness. This can mean they are more likely to experience issues with peers and to get into trouble with their teachers – both of which can undermine a child’s confidence and motivation. Additionally, being less able to deal with stress puts a child at higher risk of anxiety, which is a major factor preventing children from achieving.

Focus and attention As with tired adults, if a child’s brain is sleep-deprived, it may require very brief sleep-like moments during waking hours to rest. These are known as ‘micro-sleeps’ and can be

confused for a child day-dreaming, or zoning out. As well as making it harder to concentrate on the lesson, this can put a child in their teacher’s firing line.

Memory and learning Short- and long-term memory can be affected by lack of sleep. This means it’s not only harder for a child to retrieve previously-learnt information, but also that they may not be storing new information as effectively. Essentially, the information they are learning today may well be forgotten by tomorrow. Read on for some easy ways to encourage better sleep…

18

“Micro-sleeps can be confused for a child daydreaming, or zoning out” THE BEST SLEEP-INDUCING BEDTIME SNACKS Harvey Karp, paediatrician and author of The Happiest Toddler on the Block says, “Sleep is as important as good food. You don’t want junky sleep, just like you don’t want junky food.” As protein takes longer to digest,

a high-protein snack will release energy more slowly and in a stable way, keeping them going through the night. Karp suggests chicken soup, apple slice with nut butter, a small portion of cooked chicken and milk as great bedtime snacks. Other high protein snacks include Greek yoghurt, hummus, eggs and beans.

THE THREE THINGS KEEPING YOUR CHILD AWAKE AT NIGHT Hunger According to research from Riley Hospital for Children, a child who is hungry will find it harder to go to bed. Stephanie Jackson, a paediatric neurologist at Riley Hospital, says, “If you’re serving adequate portions at meals and your child consistently says she’s hungry at bedtime, a small snack is reasonable.” She adds that some children go through a phase of feigning hunger as a procrastination technique at bedtime. If this is the case with your child, schedule snack time into your bedtime routine.

Technology A Belgian study published in the journal SLEEP reported that children

who watched more TV and spent more time online or playing computer games during the day were more likely to go to bed later and experienced higher levels of tiredness. Predictably, the study also reported that children who have TVs and computers in their rooms go to sleep later on weekdays and on weekends.

Caffeine They may not be knocking back the espressos, but caffeine in chocolate and fizzy drinks could be making it harder for your child to reach a level of sleepiness in the evenings. Experts suggest keeping your child caffeine-free for six hours prior to bedtime.

Schools in the Middle East are embracing an inclusive environment for the betterment of the whole community

I

f you have children with special educational needs, and have been keeping a close eye on how provisions are being managed in schools, you’ll be pleased to know that the level of support is on the rise across the emirates, as education authorities and institutions continue to strive towards their inclusivity goals. A major new development is the first dedicated school for children with autism in Abu Dhabi. Born out of a partnership between Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) and the Priory Group (a leading provider of specialist education and behavioural care), Al Karamah School marks the Group’s first autism school outside of the UK. Home to a team of dedicated therapists and teachers for up to 260 Emirati children and young people on the autistic spectrum, its focus is on making a real and lasting difference to the lives of its students. “We firmly believe that every child deserves to be given the opportunity and necessary tools to learn and succeed in their chosen path,” says H.E. Sara Musallam, chairperson of ADEK. “Al Karamah School will offer unprecedented levels of specialised teaching and expertise, which correlates with our vision to provide world-class education that supports all learners.” The school has been carefully designed to provide an intimate and engaging learning environment,

20

with facilities including special classroom hubs, a multi-purpose hall and dining room, and a large oasis-style garden – all the while ensuring pupils feel safe and secure. Key features of the educational programme include: small class sizes to ensure each child can be provided with the individual support needed to help them succeed; the ability to look beyond standard approaches to deliver bespoke packages and a holistic approach to education; and developing social needs, self-esteem and confidence. “We believe there is a significant opportunity to support children with special educational needs across the Middle East,” adds Trevor Torrington, CEO of the Priory Group. “Our first overseas school, in Abu Dhabi, draws on our vast experience in the UK by creating a positive learning environment from which pupils are able to reach their true potential and go on to lead fulfilling lives and careers as adults. “An important part of our philosophy is also about working to include and integrate all children into local partner schools and the community, working alongside parents, the educational authorities and other stakeholders.”

Extra support Meanwhile, Dubai’s Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) has recently launched a guide aimed at further enhancing

“Every child deserves to be given the opportunity and necessary tools to learn and succeed” inclusive education, as the city gears up to become fully inclusive by next year. “The launch of this new guide for schools is a reflection of our commitment to scale-up efforts and enable schools to create a welcoming environment for everyone,” enthuses Fatma Belrehif, CEO of Dubai School Inspection Bureau at KHDA. “This will only be possible when the entire school community values diversity and believes in creating engaging, relevant and meaningful experiences for students of determination.” All private schools in Dubai are now required to form an inclusion support team to support the principal. These teams will include an inclusion champion, the leader of provision for students of determination, and representation from both support teachers and learning support assistants. The

“Rahhal encourages schools to customise learning experiences for individuals” guide highlights the importance of strong leadership and covers new procedures for admission, assessment, identification, intervention, systematic support and resourcing for schools. Many schools already have a strong support team and resources in place. Dubai Heights Academy (DHA), for example, has a qualified special educational needs coordinator (SENCO), who is the inclusion champion across the school, along with specialist facilities, including a multisensory gym and room, designed

22

to support skills such as gross motor development and sensory needs. Kings School Al Barsha and Jumeira Baccalaureate School (JBS) each offer an experienced inclusion team backed by external agencies. “These measures greatly benefits all students within our school,” says Ben Viljoen, head of inclusion at JBS. This inclusive and individual approach to learning is complemented by another initiative by KHDA: ‘Rahhal’. Meaning ‘traveller’ in Arabic, the ethos of Rahhal is that the world is a classroom, and all learning matters.

As part of 10x, a Dubai Future Foundation initiative to fast track Dubai 10 years into the future, within just two years, Rahhal encourages schools to customise learning experiences for individuals and extend learning beyond the classroom. Indian High School was the first private school in Dubai to pilot a programme under Rahhal with three students. Following its success, approximately 1,200 students will now have more time to pursue outof-school learning activities, as part of the project. Under the programme called ‘3.5+1.5=6’, students will attend structured school with a set timetable for three and a half days, followed by one and a half days off-campus learning to pursue activities that they would normally have to accommodate during the weekend, such as athletic coaching, exam preparation for university enrolment, internships, and other extracurricular options. “By recognising learning beyond the classroom in the first phase, we saw how our students in the pilot programme benefited over the last six months,” enthuses Dr Ashok Kumar, CEO of Indian High School. “By introducing 3.5+1.5=6, we are giving students in Grades 11 and 12 the opportunity to pursue their passions and design their own learning experience based on individual needs.” “Each student has a different way of learning and through Rahhal we are creating new experiences – for both schools and students,” adds Hind Al Mualla, chief of Creativity, Happiness & Innovation at KHDA. “We recognise the needs of our students and find new opportunities to see how students with unique learning needs can be supported. Recognising out-of-school learning is a big step towards the future and every Rahhal student presents a unique story.”

BEST FRIENDS FOREVER

A whopping 89% of students who feel happiest have close friendships, according to the KHDA Dubai Student Wellbeing Census. Stefanie Opitz, author of Friendship is About Dubai, describes the challenges and joys of making (and losing) friends as a child in the UAE‌

24

FRIENDSHIP

“I

wrote my book five years ago, when my boys were seeing many of their friends move back to their home countries and, at the time, we were also discussing the possibility of us heading back to Germany. I was searching for a book to help explain the situation but couldn’t find anything, so I hit upon the idea to write and illustrate one myself that highlighted the challenges of finding friendship in Dubai, and what happens when you have to let go. It strikes a chord, as it’s something so many families go through during their time here. “In my experience, finding friends in Dubai can be easier than many other places in the world. The classes in school are usually mixed up each year, so kids learn to introduce themselves and interact with new classmates from an early age. Plus, in my opinion, schools do a great job of integrating students from all over the world. The city is very multicultural, and kids are really openminded about other cultures. “Easy and fun ways to encourage children to build stronger friendships include organising play dates on top of special events, like sleepovers and camping in the desert. It doesn’t have to take a lot of effort or money – just the small things, like sitting together around a campfire, or reading a comic together with a torch underneath a blanket, make memories that’ll last forever. “Of course, we’re used to seeing people come and go in the UAE. This

is the downside. We’ve been here for 10 years and waved goodbye to many friends, but now my kids are used to it. Another good friend is due to leave the country soon and instead of feeling upset, my son pledged that we would visit them wherever they live. Meeting this difficult situation with such a positive attitude is truly remarkable for a 10-year-old, and there are many more kids just like him. “If your child feels sad, bear in mind that kids who grow up in an everchanging environment are likely to be highly agile – an important skill to have. What’s more, getting to know friends from all over the world will shape a tolerant, open minded person. “Remember the good times you had together, to keep the lovely memories alive. And if you’ve promised to visit your friends in their new country, make sure you commit by planning a trip. “If you’re the ones who are leaving, set about gathering some special mementoes to take with you. Discuss that, even when you’re gone, your memories will not be lost. We often visit good friends in their new homes and the kids are extremely happy when they see each other again, and all the good times from early childhood come flooding back.” Friendship is About Dubai takes the reader on a journey across the city, during which four little heroes discover the value of true friendship. The book can be personalised with photos and notes. Available in selected stores in Dubai, stefanieopitz.com

WANNA BE IN MY GANG?

School is where children learn about the minefield of relationships. Young friendships can wax and wane in the blink of an eye creating all manner of social issues and insecurities. Here we speak to two experts for tips on how to help your kids through it

W

hen your child starts school, the first milestone you want them to hit is making a friend. At parentteachers’ meetings, once they have got through telling you how they are doing, the first question on a parents’ lips is normally, “Are they getting on well with their classmates? Do they have friends? Are they liked?” All the way through education, from foundation years through to university, a child’s friendship group is one of the most important factors impacting their happiness and ability to thrive. According to the very large number of studies on the subject over the years, this is true across all demographics of gender, age and ethnicity. A study from UCLA suggested that it’s not that all friends that boost grades, but specifically in-school friends, while the University of Virginia found that teens who prioritised close friendships at age 15 had higher self-worth, and lower social anxiety and depression – and that these effects lasted right through to adulthood. Recently in the UK, the University of Surrey found that children who kept the same best friend in the transition from primary to secondary school had better success academically and in class than children who lost their best friend in the move. In the UAE, where transition is constant – not just due to moving from primary to secondary, but also between schools, between countries and otherwise – children face more upheaval with social groups. As such, your children may need a bit more support with their friendships than you needed at their age. We spoke to Dr Sarah Rasmi, psychologist and managing director of Thrive Wellbeing Centre, and Deirdre Walsh, a teacher at Dubai English Speaking College where she heads up GROW (the school’s

26

wellbeing curriculum) and Moral Education, to find out what you need to know.

THE MAIN ISSUES Social isolation Dr Rasmi: “Usually it all comes down to social isolation. Children are concerned that they are going to be, or that they are, rejected by their social group. We see this with all ages, from young children up to adults. It makes a lot of sense as one of our most fundamental needs is a sense of connection and belongness.”

Aggression Dr Rasmi: “What we tend to see is that boys have a tendency to be more physically aggressive, whereas girls are more likely to be relationally aggressive. And that means excluding people and spreading rumours. We also know that there is an added issue of cyberbullying, which happens across both genders.”

Gossip Ms Walsh: “Gossip is a huge concern for children. It’s definitely something I find students suffer with and it’s something they worry about as well – what people are saying about them and people saying different things. Gossip happens in school, outside school and online, which is another issue.”

Finding support Ms Walsh: “The majority of kids will confide in their friends. Often what I find is that their friends will come to me, or another teacher, or a student advisor. Depending on how serious the situation is, the teacher may be able to give advice, if it’s a small issue, such as a bit of gossip, or communication issues. However, if it’s a more serious issue, such as bullying, or if they are incredibly upset about it, we will encourage them to go to the student advisors.”

GOLDEN RULES Ms Walsh’s golden friendship rules to teach your kids

HOW CAN I SUPPORT? Dr Rasmi: “Make sure you have open communication with your kids, which means talking with them, but also really listening to them and hearing their concerns and how it makes people feel. If they are having a consistent issue with an individual, or a group, you may need to teach them some social skills to overcome that. “One of the best ways to do this is to role play it with them. For instance, if they are being picked on by a child they don’t know, or with a friend from their group, listen to them, acknowledge where they are coming from and empathise with what they are feeling. Then ask them how they want to problem-solve the issue saying things like, ‘How can we solve this issue? What can we do?’ A lot of the time they will say they don’t know, or that there is nothing that can be done. And a lot of time, parents will try and jump in with suggestions, which is great, but we also want to try and get them to generate their own solutions. Saying things like, ‘What have you tried before? What worked? What didn’t work? Have you seen another approach work better?’ This will help equip your child with the real-life situation. “If a situation is causing your child distress, but they don’t want you to involve the teacher, or the other child’s parents, I would first explore why they don’t want you to. They may have a valid perspective on that, and it may be about reaching out to another trusted adult,

28

or teacher. If your child really resists, I would advise getting in touch with someone quietly at the school to find out what is going on and then re-assessing the situation.” Ms Walsh: “Talk to them and take an interest in who they are hanging out with. Ask them the names, where they are from, what they are like… And if your child says they are struggling to make friends, encourage them to start an extra-curricular activity, so they can bond with another child over a common interest. Or encourage them to talk to someone that is from the same country as them, or who went to the same primary school. If it’s an ongoing issue, contact your child’s teacher so that a plan can be put in place to try and help your child and stop them from feeling isolated and left out. At DESC, we would put a buddy system into place, whereby one child is buddied up with your child to help bring them into social groups.”

WHAT IF MY CHILD IS A BULLY? Ms Walsh: “It can be difficult to admit that you think your child is bullying someone. At the start of year seven, we talk about communication types and assertiveness to help the children become aware of their own communication styles. At home parents can talk to their children about kindness and what is appropriate behaviour or communication.”

Understand your feelings “We always say to kids to ‘think, feel, behave’. So with any issue, encourage them to tune into their own feelings on it. If it’s making them feel sad, or left out, ask them what they need to do to remedy that feeling. Do they need to be proactive about talking to people? Perhaps the friendship group they are in isn’t right for them… Sometimes just by identifying that you can help them to start to realising that they need to make new friends.” Have good ethics “My favourite golden rule for encouraging healthy friendships is to treat others as you would want to be treated. Everyone wants to be treated kindly and to be respected – children and adults.” Be a good listener “Children need to learn to listen to their friends. It’s natural for them to try and butt in with their own stories, or thoughts – adults do this too. But that isn’t a good way to treat a friend, or how to build a friendship. So at home, you can model that behaviour and teach good listening manners.” Be generous “Explain to your children that the key to building good friendships is not by being generous with money, but by being generous with their time. Wait for them if they are delayed, or packing up their bag. Allow them time to talk, find time to spend with them on your own and as a group.” Be positive “Smile, be friendly, be generous, be happy. Try to get along with people and to enjoy yourself at school and people will feel this on you.”

FRIENDSHIP Dr Rasmi: “If your child is being unkind to another child, we call this an empathy blindspot. If your child doesn’t like another child, they either overlook the feelings of the other child, or they think their feelings don’t count. If you ask them why they are being mean or unkind to the child, they will give a justification, such as ‘He is mean’, or, ‘He is stupid’. So, what I would suggest in a situation like this is to acknowledge their feelings and frustrations, but also get them to see the other child’s perspective and how it might be hurting them. And again, get them to look at how they might move forward with that situation and how they can prevent doing it in the future.”

DR RASMI’S TIPS FOR ENCOURAGING SOCIAL RESILIENCE

Let them learn “In the same way as we don’t want to jump in on every sibling squabble because we want them to learn to manage conflicts on their own and resolve issues, the same is true at school. We want to give them a little bit of space to experience social issues and learn from them. But when something takes a serious physical or emotional turn, that’s when we want to interfere. So, if they do ask you about it, remembering to help them to come

up with their own solutions is a really important part of growing up.” Empower them to make a stand “When it comes to bullying, we want to teach them to be up-standers, rather than by-standers. Most bullying happens in front of other people – either in the school playground, or on social media, or phones. According to studies, children normally feel bad about it and want to help, but don’t know what to do and feel they might make it worse somehow. So they feel inhibited to stand up. One of the ways to counteract the bystander effect is to tell your kids that, even if in the moment they can’t stand up, just making eye contact with that child, or speaking to them afterwards and saying, ‘Hey, what just happened was really unfair. Are you ok?’ can go a really long while. If lots of children are doing that, it can make a difference to the school’s culture.”

WORDS BY: LOUISA KIERNANDER

Helping them to settle “It’s a real help if parents get involved in the school – coffee mornings, or

discussions, a PTA… If you can’t do that, try and connect with one of the parents in some way. It’s hard for children sometimes to initiate contact and playdates, so it can be helpful to reach out and organise something on their behalf – a one-on-one interaction outside of school. Another thing to think about for new children is for them to look around and find the other new kids, or other children who aren’t sitting with someone, or who look confused.”

How to make the best decision for your child

Follow the right path

Fiona Mckenzie, of independent education advisors Gabbitas, looks at the key decision making points in secondary education and how to make smart choices to chart a successful path for your child’s future

30

PROMOTION

W

hen you wave your little one off to their first day of school, the prospect of university and career choices feels light years away. But then someone presses fast forward and there you are in Year 9, having to make subject choices that could impact your child’s opportunities later on in life. How do you know if dropping history rather than geography will rule you out of being a future prime minister? Does picking business studies over economics mean a career in high finance may be compromised? At Gabbitas, we always advise students that it is best to take action with some career profiling; this will highlight their strengths and guide them to explore a variety of suitable options. Taking this long-term perspective can be hugely helpful for making confident choices for GCSEs or the equivalent. Objective profiling gives clear guidance and can reassure families that the subject choices made at this stage need not be life defining. Roll forward another two years and then it is a different scenario. The post 16 choices a student makes starts charting a much more specific course. The first decision to be made is which curriculum to study at 6th Form (Year 12 and 13) level. The international baccalaureate offers academic rigour and a chance to study a wide range of subjects. However, this broad-based programme is not for everyone; for some children, the thought of battling on for two more years with subjects they do not want to study can be torture. And, if the

end game is to achieve the highest possible grades for university entrance, then is risking low scores in subjects that do not come naturally worth the risk? A-levels offer a more focussed approach but confines you to studying only three subjects, four at a maximum. Is it really possible, aged 16, to know which three subjects are going to equip you for life? Or maybe you are thinking about the French baccalaureate system, although you have to pick a particular pathway that will steer you towards certain university degrees and potential career paths. The good news is that all of these qualifications are globally recognised at universities across the world. But how do you make such a critical decision at such a young age? Again we find some objective profiling is valuable. Assessing a student’s interest levels for particular degrees and then ‘health checking’ their suitability to study these areas can be a good way of evaluating where their strengths lie and how best to turn those to academic advantage. It is also useful at this decision making point to work out what the expectations are for the next level of education. To be a competitive applicant for studying economics at LSE, for example, it is sensible to be studying maths at the highest possible level; and nothing is more heart-breaking than a student coming to see me wanting to study at medical school and realising too late that the top subject requirement is chemistry; not biology. We are living in an age of rapid change, Oxford University

“Take action with some career profiling”

predicts that 47% of today’s jobs will disappear in the next two decades and be replaced by… Who can tell? So how can you help your child to make sound choices in such uncertain times? For help, contact Gabbitas today on +971(0) 445 16933 or admin@ gabbitas.ae to find out more about student profiling and university preparation.

GABBITAS’ TOP TIPS FOR PREPARING FOR YOUR CHILD’S FUTURE: 1 Start early and take advice Encourage your children to see their education in the context of a wider picture of careers and work. Give them opportunities to talk to your friends about what they do and how they got started. Let them explore what the world of work looks like by doing some work shadowing. Sign them up for career profiling in Year 9 and use this to help make sound age 13+ choices. 2 Project forward, work backwards Although university might seem a long way off, looking forward and exploring options in Year 11 before making post 16 choices is a wise move. By identifying some potential degree paths, your child can evaluate the options and make confident subject choices for 6th form and have a sense of direction. 3 Be flexible While making post 16 choices can feel as if you are mapping out a non-negotiable future, nothing is set in stone. Some universities even offer specific entry paths for students who realised too late that they have picked the wrong subject combinations.

GREEN GOALS

SMALL STEPS FOR BIG CHANGES

Gone are the days when an eco-conscious school meant bringing in old cereal boxes to make a model city. Today, educational establishments are encouraging students to engage in topics that matter at a global level. We take a closer look…

WORDS BY: LOUISA KIERNANDER

I

t has been three years since the UN announced its 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and the UAE is well on board. Agriculture, marine life, consumption regulations – all of the 17 goals defined by the UN are being looked at and actioned in small and large ways across the country. Goal 13 – Climate Action – is getting special attention, with the UAE’s Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) launching a 33-year plan to address the causes and impacts of climate change and pave the way for a transition towards a green economy. As part of this plan, MOCCAE has teamed up with the Ministry of Education and the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, to run two ongoing programmes: ‘Our Generations’ and ‘Sustainable Schools’ aimed at encouraging schools to address environmental issues and conservation in their classes and to reduce their own environmental footprints. The country’s schools have responded with gusto. Vegetable patches, recycling bins and waterconservation measures are normal features at most schools across the emirates. Mr Ataullah Parker, vice-principal of ISCS Nad Al Sheba says, “We promote mindfulness through green projects and promote sustainability within the school

community. We developed a garden, which parents and teachers contributed plants to. The students helped plant the garden and they take responsibility for looking after it. Across the school we have recycling bins and students are taught about the importance of dividing their rubbish into plastics and paper. We also use electronic communication with our parents to save on paper and promote recycling through our after-school clubs, where students bring in used materials and find new uses for them.”

The younger years The beauty of eco-friendly concepts is that they can be adapted for all ages. Young pre-schoolers love anything that is to do with nature and animals, so teaching them about the importance of caring for the planet is easily slipped into their daytime

“Students are taught the importance of dividing their rubbish into plastics and paper”

activities and classroom spaces. Karan Brown is the associate director of education at KBBO Group, which runs Bright Kids Nursery, Al Basma schools and others. She says, “Our nurseries and schools are committed to the environment by raising awareness and making children conscious of the roles that they can play in saving trees, water and electricity, protecting animals, and making Reduce-Reuse-Recycle part of their lifestyles. At Bright Kids Nursery, the theme for this month is ‘Under the Sea’ and, at morning assemblies, they talk about saving sea animals from plastic. You have little ones saying a big ‘NO’ to plastic and to plastic straws. They are also creating treasure from trash – we hope to have an exhibition soon where we can auction our prized possessions and then donate the money to a local charity.”

An idea that grows Al Manahil School in Abu Dhabi received an international award at the Sustainable School Awards 2017 and has been recognised as a ‘Sustainable School’ under the MOCCAE and Ministry of Education campaign mentioned above. Beverly Cook, the principal at the school, is very proud of her school and her students for achieving these high accolades. Indeed, the school has worked hard to

33

ensure that sustainability is a theme across the entire school. Each class has an 'eco-warrior' to turn off the lights and the air conditioning, to discourage paper wastage and encourage students to reuse water bottles. And while the kindergarten classes are tasked with recycling home items and eating outside three times a week to save on lights and air conditioning, the primary and secondary years are challenged with interesting projects such as making seating and tables out of recycled plastic bottles, a waste-free lunch box campaign, a waste paper collection which resulted in 40 reams of paper and lots more.

Raising the bar Bringing a new standard of ecoconscious education to the UAE is Fairgreen Dubai in Sustainable City – the country’s first official eco-school, which is powered entirely on renewable energy. This adheres nicely to Dubai’s target of having seven percent of the city’s energy coming from renewable sources by 2020; a target which will increase to 25 percent by 2030, by which point it will be mandatory for all buildings in Dubai to have solar panels. Adam Hall, a middle years science teacher at Fairgreen Dubai, has had 20 years' experience in the sustainability and renewable energy industries – eight of which have been in a teaching and non-profit management capacity. For him, sustainability isn’t just a topic on the syllabus, it’s a life-long passion. He says, “The mission is to teach our students how to embrace sustainability in all of its forms. Our aim is to create purposeful and innovative experiences for students to learn about the different disciplines and academic subjects through the common link of sustainability. “Fairgreen Dubai is an IB school, which means there is a focus on global context and how the students can relate to the world as a whole. This adds another dimension to our ethos as

34

we want our students to be thinking about how their actions affect the whole world.” With the campus being designed and built especially for their eco needs and in order to meet Sustainable City’s green standards, Fairgreen boasts solar panels on the rooftops of the buildings, a biodome with an aquaculture and fish, vertical tower gardens where the students can grow vegetables and fruits (which students can then make in to healthy drinks and smoothies in the school’s café), and lots more. “The way the school is built,” explains Hall, “the infrastructure can be used to teach eco concepts. So the learning becomes a very hands on experience for our students.”

EASY WAYS TO BE MORE ECO-FRIENDLY AT HOME Energy-saving tips that little ones can take note of, too... • Turn off the water when brushing your teeth, instead of leaving the tap running, and you could save more than five gallons per day. • Playing between rooms? Make sure you turn off the lights when they're not needed. • Help your parents wash the car with a bucket of soapy water. Use a nozzle to stop the flow of water from the hose between rinsing.

Streamline the school run GREEN LIFESTYLE GOALS

“Eco-friendly concepts can be adapted for all ages” Going global As well as setting new standards of environmental awareness in education in the UAE, Fairgreen is teaching students to reach for the stars with its very own global campaign. The Million Solar Stars Challenge, which is currently in development and set to be launched in conjunction with Dubai Expo 2020, aims to see students locally and internationally attempting to integrate solar technology into their schools. Hall, Chief Star Organizer on the project, says, “We want to engage students in building small solar models and scaling them up to a pilot system, through which they can collect data to learn about solar power. With that data, they can

inform their board about scaling up to a commercial solar power system, which could help their school save money and the environment.” Empowering children to think big and make changes that impact their school, their community and the world as a whole takes environmental issues off the page (or screen) and brings them to life in a very real way Hall says, “As parents and teachers, we need to recognise that living in the UAE, with our need for an air conditioned environment for many months of the year, environmental issues and messages can get lost, or feel ignored. But the leadership in the UAE is very progressive in terms of sustainability. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan

had a vision of sustainability many years ago, so it’s important at a local and a global level that children are involved in these movements and that schools foster a sense of importance around achieving these goals.” As a parent, what are your priorities for your children’s education and learning? Surely it’s not only about getting good grades to get a wellpaid job? Yes, that’s important. But what about raising children who are aware of what they consume and how it impacts their community, other communities, nature, mankind and the planet? Do we want to raise materialist robots, or good humans? One very good way to achieve the latter is by respecting the planet and caring how your actions impact others – around the world, now and into the future. As Hall says, “We need to make sure we are raising children who care for the environment and who will be good stewards of our planet.” We quite agree.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST EDUCATION Whether you’re new to the UAE, have just had a baby or are looking to switch schools, you’ll be eager to get up to date with everything you need to know to choose the right nursery or school for your child

36

ESSENTIALS

P

re-primary curriculums start at age three (your child’s age is calculated as his/her age on the 31 July for Indian, Pakistani and Japanese curriculum schools or 31 December for other curricula) in the UAE, while compulsory education begins from Grade 1 (approximately age six, depending on your child’s birth date and the curriculum they will study). Dubai is booming. There are currently 194 schools in Dubai, and the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), which regulates schools, estimates that there will be a need for an additional 80,000 to 100,000 school places by next year. As a result, places are hard to come by in the most sought-after schools and can be a challenge to find at short notice in some year groups, particularly the Foundation and Reception ages, between four and six. Meanwhile, in Abu Dhabi, private schools operate across three regions – Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and Al Dhafra – catering to around 200,000 students. The Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) is responsible for managing, guiding, adopting and implementing various educational development strategies and initiatives in the region, with its Irtiqa’a inspection system measuring quality and supporting improvements so that all schools in the emirate compare well with international standards. Your child’s school placement may be organised through the company you work for, but if not, it’s wise to shortlist several schools so you have options should you not gain a place at your top choice. Be sure to research the assessment and admission criteria for the schools you shortlist, as well as the requirements for fees and payment schedules.

EARLY YEARS Currently, more than 120 early childhood education centres are registered in Dubai, according to

KHDA. Here, the authority highlights factors to consider when selecting a nursery:

Curriculum and approach to learning What kind of curriculum or learning approach does the centre follow? Whatever the approach, there should be clear learning and development outcomes for your child and mechanisms for the teacher to report on your child’s progress on a regular basis. Depending on your first language, you will want to ask about the languages used in the centre. For example, will your child be given the opportunity to interact with adults speaking good Arabic and good English? Check that the daily programme will provide your child with different experiences within a clear routine and that the centre is committed to the importance of play for your child to learn. Some centres also enhance their curriculum with in-house programmes or visits by outside organisations.

Quality of provision It is important to inquire about and, if possible, observe the teaching and learning. In general, are the teachers friendly, caring and qualified to provide care and nurturing for your child and do they make you feel welcome in the centre and answer your questions openly and fully? Ask about the nationality and qualifications of the staff and about the staff-to-child ratio – how many children will be under the care of each adult?

PARENT-SCHOOL CONTRACT Upon enrolling in a school, you will be required to sign a Parent-School contract at the start of the school year, which ensures that both schools and parents are aware of their duties and responsibilities towards each other and towards their children. The terms and conditions stipulated in the contract will also be a reference for dispute resolution. However, if your child is continuing at the same school, you will not be required to sign the parentschool contract annually. Your contract with the school will continue to remain valid while your child is enrolled at the same school. A new contract shall be issued and signed by the parent only if your child’s school is changed.

The environment The Ministry of Social Affairs sets out a number of safety regulations, which early childhood education centres must follow. In addition, it is a good idea to ask about the presence of a centre nurse, the number of staff who are qualified in first aid and the safety and security measures taken by the

37

38

ESSENTIALS centre. Ask about the measures taken to ensure a clean environment and to prevent cross-contamination. You will also want to check that there are secure procedures to stop unauthorised people entering the building and for the drop-off and pick-up of children by authorised adults only.

STARTING SCHOOL With compulsory education starting from Grade 1, the academic year runs from September to June, except for Indian, Pakistani and Japanese curriculum schools, which run from April to March. There is an accepted age range for each school grade/year and your chosen school should be able to give you information about this. Here are the factors to consider when choosing a school:

Curriculum The curriculum is much more than the textbooks or examinations – it refers to everything the school teaches, including subjects and activities inside and outside the classroom. These include extracurricular activities, school trips, and visitors to the school. Different curricula also adopt different approaches to learning. All curricula lead to public examinations and qualifications. These will be important considerations in your choice of curriculum for your child – you may need to think about the requirements of any future application to university or further education, either in the UAE or abroad. In addition, if you are coming from abroad, your selection of

a curriculum may depend upon your country of origin as you may want your child to integrate back into your home country’s education system at some time in the future.

SCHOOL INSPECTIONS IN DUBAI

Quality of education The learning outcomes and performance of schools will be important to you in making your decision. The Dubai School Inspections Bureau’s (DSIB’s) annual inspection reports allow you to look at these and other aspects of schools in detail (visit khda.gov.ae for individual inspection reports).

School environment Your child will be spending a lot of time in school and all aspects of the school have an impact on your child’s social development and personality. As part of the decision-making process, try to arrange a tour of the school, talk with administrators, teachers and students and see the school in action. Areas you should talk about include how the school is structured, whether classes are mixed and/or whether classes are streamed for ability, how transport is arranged, and the arrangements for lunch and breaks. You can also find out the school policies on examinations, assessment, discipline, dealing with bullying, communications with parents, and technology integration, to name just a few. For more information on choosing and enrolling in education in Dubai, visit khda.gov.ae and for more details on education in Abu Dhabi, visit adek.abudhabi.ae

SCHOOL INSPECTIONS IN ABU DHABI Irtiqa’a inspection system of ADEK employs a team that includes specialists with curriculum expertise in the school’s given curriculum or curricula. Inspections in private and government schools in Abu Dhabi take place once within a two-year cycle, using the aforementioned six-level scale, with Band A including levels Good to Outstanding; Band B covering Acceptable; and Band C including Weak and Very Weak ratings.

The Dubai School Inspection Bureau (DSIB) of KHDA provides comprehensive information on the standard of private school education in Dubai, which helps to inform improvement planning at school and policy level. This is achieved through a number of approaches, including annual school inspections, parents meetings and focus groups, teachers, parents and students surveys. The inspection results, which are released in February or March for Indian and Pakistani schools and in April for all other schools, is based on a six-level scale, as follows: OUTSTANDING – quality of performance substantially exceeds the expectation of the UAE; VERY GOOD – quality of performance exceeds the expectation of the UAE; GOOD – quality of performance meets the expectation of the UAE; ACCEPTABLE – quality of performance meets the minimum level of quality required in the UAE; WEAK – quality of performance is below the expectation in the UAE; VERY WEAK – quality of performance is significantly below the expectation in the UAE. Inspectors assess quality of education at a variety of levels so the rankings are a great resource to use when considering schools.
