Keep it safe

Hello everyone,

It’s great to be back with our ninth issue. This time, we’re exploring safety and security, and we’ve talked to some of the top firms in the business, including Global Fire Services (GFS) and XCOPS. The theme is continued in our cover story, which we hope you will enjoy.

We had a chat with Adil Naeem of GFS for Conversation. He’s an industry veteran with a military background, and we got his input on the recent fires that devastated parts of Male'.

On a less grim note, our writers went up to Noonu Atoll to the chic Mövenpick Resort and were delighted with their culinary offerings.

And we took a look at Swimsol’s SolarSea project at LUX* South Ari Atoll. Swimsol is making a great effort to use renewable energy and we applaud them.

For Working Women, we featured Rafaaf Wahid, an ambitious young woman from Naifaru who joined the team at Hurawalhi in May last year. Breaking stereotypes, she’s the resort’s first hijabi restaurant hostess and has a little hobby that’s encouraged by the resort.

And in ‘Word from the top’, we interviewed Jonas Amstad, GM at LUX* South Ari Atoll. He believes going green isn’t just good for the environment but that it makes a lot of sense economically.

All right. See you with our next issue soon.

Warm Regards

Adil Naeem

Much was said about safety over the past few weeks – there was loss of life, damage to property, homelessness. The preventable nature of these incidents sparked public outcry, so we thought it was an opportune moment to sit down with one of the best men in the business of fire safety, Adil Naeem, director, Global Fire Services (GFS).

10 Hotel Insider
Conversation

Hotel Insider: We’ve had two incidents in Male' recently. What are your thoughts on them? What should we be doing to make our homes safer?

Adil Naeem: The recent warehouse fire was a calamity that took a woman’s life and shook the entire city. It also displaced many families and destroyed a lot of property.

This tragic incident and the T-Jetty fire have highlighted the need to implement a building code here in Male'. It should consider fire safety and I strongly believe that both government and private buildings must abide by it. That will guarantee the means of escape for workers and residents in an emergency. Property has a price but life is priceless.

Fire protection and fire-fighting systems must be installed in all government buildings to safeguard the lives of those who use them. And installation of these systems alone is not sufficient. Their service and maintenance are equally important. Then, MNDF fire and rescue services can be confident to use the systems.

In some high-rise buildings in Male', you

can see certain safety features in place. They have fire extinguishers, dry riser systems and so on. But unfortunately, the general public is not trained to use them and lacks basic safety awareness.

The way I see it, damage from the warehouse incident could have been mitigated if companies weren’t allowed to store highly flammable items in residential areas. It will be ideal if they are stored in a separate area far from residential blocks. Then, such incidents, if they were to happen, will be easier to control and handle.

And it’s very important to have a hydrant system here in Male’, which will let firemen respond more efficiently. Also, fire safety awareness is just as important.

Let me ask you a question. What would you do if you are trapped in your room when your building is on fire?

Hotel Insider: Call for help.

Adil Naeem: Yes, of course. But what would you do while you waited for help to arrive?

Here’s what you should do. You will need to close all the doors and windows. And since

11 Hotel Insider
"The way I see it, damage from the warehouse incident could have been mitigated if companies weren’t allowed to store highly flammable items in residential areas. "

doors in most houses have a gap between them and the floor, you must fill that gap with a wet towel.

Also, you must bear in mind to stay close to the ground or be in a crouching position as the smoke and hot gases are lighter and will affect you if you were to stay upright.

And you must never use the lift in case of fire. Almost all lifts have that warning but sometimes people panic and use them. The real danger with this is that buildings almost always lose electricity during a fire, and with the power out, you are stuck in a lift.

That’s not a situation you’d want to find yourself in.

Always use the stairs and make sure they are never obstructed. We all know the neighbour who piles goods on these narrow staircases for “temporary storage”. This is a very dangerous practise.

Hotel Insider: That advice could save lives. By the way, we heard you were on the scene at the T-Jetty during the fire.

Adil Naeem: Yes, I was. My 25 years of experience in this field leads me to believe that the fire had occurred due to negligence. There must have been a spark, probably by a lighter, that set the whole thing off.

The thing is, the bowsers (vehicles that transport fuel) in that area don’t have adequate fire-fighting equipment. Plus, the people who drive these vehicles are not properly trained to handle a fire extinguisher.

I believe that the authorities have revoked the licenses of several vehicles since.

Hotel Insider: All right. Moving on to resorts. We’ve seen real devastation at Gili Lankanfushi for one. What do you make of it? What should properties be doing to improve their fire safety standards?

Adil Naeem: New resorts are required by law to have fire and safety measures in place before they are allowed to open up for business. Unfortunately, most properties just do the bare minimum to obtain the relevant licence.

A fire safety regulation for resorts was gazetted in 2015, and resorts need to adhere to it. The regulation demands the installation of

many fire safety systems. And there’s a lot of fire fighting and protective equipment required to be on the island to be used by the resort’s fire squad.

A fire can happen anywhere, even on the best prepared of properties. Most resorts today have a fire squad – almost all our resort clients do.

Hotel Insider: All right. Can you tell us a bit about fire squads and their training?

Adil Naeem: Fire squad training is the most important one. It focusses on both offensive and defensive firefighting, performed outside and inside an enclosed structure when a fire is beyond the incipient stage.

Having a fire squad is imperative as they are your first responders in case of a fire.

We are the only company with a permit from MNDF to conduct this training. Plus, we have training bases in Lhaviyani, Baa, and soon in Addu Atoll as well. So, our clients won’t have to go too far from work to train with us.

Hotel Insider: That’s a great selling point. And speaking of training, how often do you have drills in resorts?

Adil Naeem: We try to conduct one fire drill per client per year. We create scenarios and we try to make them as realistic as possible, using makeup to simulate burns and fog machines to make rooms smoky. A person might be playing the part of an injured guest, for example, and the fire squad needs to respond appropriately to this situation. They can’t treat that person in just any ordinary way, it has to be done properly, taking into account the person’s injuries. These drills have been very successful and highlight areas for improvement.

Hotel Insider: Glad to hear that. Anything else before we part?

Adil Naeem: Since all of our trainers are ex-MNDF personnel and firefighters, it would be great if the government would allow us access to sites in crisis to assist the MNDF fire and rescue team as I am certain our help would prove invaluable in such situations.

Hotel Insider: Thanks a lot, Adil. It was great chatting with you.

UNDP Maldives A Way without Plastic

Home to approximately 1200 low-lying coral islands scattered across the Indian Ocean, the Maldives is famous for its sun-kissed beaches, crystalline lagoons and its rare underwater beauty.

Year around, tourists from all around the world travel miles to experience the beauty of the country that by some are described as “Paradise on Earth”. A majority of these tourists come specifically to experience the pleasure of diving into the deep blue oceans with vibrant coral reefs and a rich variety of life underwater such as lionfish, angelfish, dolphins, whale sharks, manta rays and sea turtles. Now imagine, the complete disappointment one would feel when a once in a lifetime experience is interrupted by floating plastic in the ocean. Imagine the feeling of seeing the very animals that one comes to witness, tangled in a plastic bag and struggling for air.

The unpleasantness resulting from such imagery is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the harmful effects of plastic and plastic pollution. For instance, plastic can pose deadly threats to the coral reefs, marine and land animals and their ecosystems. The everlasting nature of plastic coupled with the absence of comprehensive recycling programs and government regulation on single-use plastics, only adds to the case. In such a scenario remarkable attempts such as that of The Maldives Authentic Crafts Cooperative Society (MACCS), a grantee of Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Programme (SGP) implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in the Maldives is very much needed and appreciated.

MACCS is a women-led cooperative that promotes sustainable livelihood through the revival of traditional Maldivian handicrafts

industry. The project advocating against single-use plastic bags by MACCS is popularly known as “Plastic Noon Gotheh” which can be roughly translated to “A Way without Plastic.” Intending to conserve the environment by promoting and facilitating the banning of single-use plastic bags in the capital of Maldives, Male’ city, it focuses on increasing awareness, community-centered reduction of plastics, demonstration of alternatives and policy advocacy. The project will also assess the level and nature of the use of single-use plastic bags in selected households and shops and the acceptance of alternative bags.

So, reusable bags were given to selected shops in Male' to be distributed to the customers. The effectiveness of this plan was challenged by how the use of plastic bags have become a part of everyday life with many collecting plastic bags to use as bin liners. Undoubtedly, using single-use plastic bags is convenient and easy. You use it, you throw it with little thought. This, in turn, has resulted in greater resistance to switch to alternatives. However, it should be emphasised and reminded that the cost of using plastic to the environment and our health far exceeds the benefit of convenience. Moving away from single-use plastic has proven to be a challenging but necessary change.

The team of Plastic Noon Gotheh has recognised the need for such a change and is committed to reducing single-use plastic in the Maldives through persistent hard work. In doing so, they believe in working collectively and hence have actively partnered up with various NGOs, private firms and government

agencies and in many events such as “Dhulha Heyo, Hashi Heyo” (National Level Sports Fiesta), Fannungedharin (Youth Music Show) and Zero Plastic Run.

A major achievement and an indicator of the success of the project is the efforts of one of the selected shops, “Vega Point” to continue the initiative and importing paper bags by themselves to make the move away from plastic to paper more permanent. The efforts of MACCS through the project has also been recognised and praised both nationally and internationally. The project team had the privilege of being part of the event that marked the commencement of banning singleuse plastic at the President’s Office, Maldives. It has also been featured in GEF’s publication; Plastics and Circular Economy: Community Solutions and represented in Washington with attendees at the GEF Council Consultation with civil society organisations in Washington, DC.

A major win for all the individuals doing their bit against single-use plastics, was the announcement of a national ban on plastic bags in December 2018. It was a promising result of an inspiring effort by students of 17 institutions who submitted a proposition to the parliament under an initiative by Ghiyasuddin International School. With the new promise to make the island free of plastic bags by 2020, it’s about time to make “a way without plastic” the way of life to ensure that the Maldives lives to its title as Paradise on Earth and for the wellbeing of all life here.

In the Boardroom

Husen Amru Mohamed Rashad

STO is the largest trading organisation in the country, and it’s slowly backing out of retailing. The company’s CEO and MD Husen Amru revealed a project that we think would be of great interest to resorts and potential investors: they are planning on buying produce from local farms and act as a distributor.

They intend to match the prices of imported produce and control quality – good news for those interested in quality local produce.

Hotel Insider: You've recently merged your electronics and home improvement operations, they now operate under the same roof again. Can you tell us why?

Husen Amru: We wanted to do two things. For one, we didn’t want to be involved in the sale of small electronic goods like headphones, phones or speakers. Secondly, home improvement, electronics and the supermarket are actually under one umbrella. And ideally, we want to have all those departments under one roof. That’s the plan.

Hotel Insider: That’s great. Now, can we talk about the Makita sales promotion that’s on-going? How has the reception been so far?

Husen Amru: It’s doing really well. Makita is one of the oldest brands in the country and it’s really gained customer loyalty and trust over the years. But recently we had a little issue with spare parts and inventory and it created a gap that was filled in by a few other brands. But we’ve since updated our inventory and got spare parts, and we maintained a strong presence before going ahead with the promotion. Sales have really picked up and we’re seeing some big shifts again towards Makita from clients who’ve chosen other brands.

Hotel Insider: And do you have anything exciting for your resort clients?

Husen Amru: Yes, air conditioners for example. We carry Hitachi products and we include servicing as well. We’re also selling Philips and Samsung TVs – Philips is a bit more sophisticated than Samsung but both

brands are excellent.

We’re also undertaking a project that might be of interest to our resort clients. Our aim is to establish food security in the Maldives. We’re an import-heavy destination. You probably know that the attacks on Saudi oil fields have impacted petrol prices. They’ve risen by about 15 per cent. And this will affect imports, including food. We need to grow our own – we have the land, labour and know-how. The issue right now is that we don’t have a reliable way of selling what’s grown.

Take an island like Thoddoo for example. They’re known for their watermelons, but that’s seasonal. Year-round they grow crops like papaya and lettuce, and in enough quantity to feed the entire nation. They’re facing an issue in selling their produce, however. What we want is to purchase their produce and distribute it. We achieve two advantages, for one, we control their quality. And we can add value to it.

We are able to sell to resorts on credit, which farmers by themselves cannot do. We’ve taken the fisheries industry as our model. That industry enjoys its present position because all of the catch was bought at a fair price. That gave investors great confidence to invest in the industry. And we’ve seen an increase in private fishing vessels and enterprise over the years and they’ve eclipsed MIFCO [government fisheries company].

I believe that once farmers have confidence that their produce will be bought, the farming industry will also see that kind of growth.

We want to sell locally grown produce to the resort sector. In this way, resorts will be contributing to the community. Plus, they

16 Hotel Insider

will be buying quality produce at a very competitive rate.

Hotel Insider: That’s a great project. So, you will be acting as a distributor for locally grown produce.

Husen Amru: Yes, we won’t be involved in the production though we will provide support to farmers through consultants, quality fertilisers and pesticides.

Hotel Insider: So, is the role of STO in the local economy growing or shrinking?

Husen Amru: What we really want is to touch on those areas that aren’t being explored by other local businesses. We don’t want to get into and compete with small enterprises. Like with the project I just mentioned, we don’t know if it will be profitable to us, and it’s not something that can be done by a business that intends to be profitable.

STO has certain responsibilities – like guaranteeing the availability of basic food items and ensuring their prices don’t fluctuate too much. Like in Ramadan, you’ll notice that the prices of eggs and potatoes skyrocket. We’re operating a supermarket because we want certain goods to be available and within a reasonable price-range. We can’t expect that from the market, obviously.

But we also want to move away from retailing. We’re leasing certain areas of the supermarket to private parties, so, in the end STO will be providing the space for private enterprises to carry out their business.

Hotel Insider: What other areas are you looking at exploring? Previously, the MD of STO told us that they were looking at fuel bunkering.

Husen Amru: Right now, we’re focussing on activities that will have an impact on the economy of the entire country. So, we’re looking at going into shipping.

The price of shipping is higher than it should be. Shipping a container from Sri Lanka to the Maldives costs as much or more than shipping one from China to Sri Lanka. The prices are kept artificially high. So, we want to get into that, keep prices reasonable and it will have a positive effect on the prices of imports.

Hotel Insider: OK. Lastly, what’s your vision for STO? Where do you see the company in five years?

Husen Amru: We have a lot of subsidiaries, and they’ve been performing very well so far. The challenge for us is MIFCO. Our goal is to turn MIFCO into a profitable company. There hasn’t been significant investment in the company for the past thirty years or so. The machinery at the Felivaru canning factory is the same as it was in the beginning. MIFCO’s capacity has remained unchanged too, at 50 tonnes per day. The company buys 150 tonnes and freezes and exports the remainder to Thailand. But the thing is, the export price is cheaper than the price of goods.

We can’t bring in any major investments to the company too quickly, and as you may know, MIFCO was brought under STO because the company was heavily in debt. So, that’s one of our big goals for now, to make it profitable.

Hotel Insider: Hotel Insider: Thank you, Amru. It was a pleasure.

Word from the top

Jonas Amstad

A Swiss national who’s very familiar with Russia and Ukraine, Jonas Amstad, general manager, LUX* South Ari has had experiences that will likely crush the average person. Fluent in Russian, he was in Crimea when the annexation happened, his hotel in Donetsk was occupied by the armed forces.

He’s seen… well, let’s just say if it had happened to one of us, I wonder if we’d still have a sense of humour. Anyhow, Jonas has been in Fiji so he’s familiar with island destinations. He thinks they attract similar sorts of clientele. And today, it’s not just the West who is environmentally conscious, it’s a global phenomenon and he believes the Maldives should continue to put sustainability at the core of its marketing strategy.

in Donetsk and we were the only leading hotel there.

Hotel Insider: How would you describe the hospitality landscape there though?

Jonas Amstad: It’s not really a touristic city, we mostly had business travellers except during the World Cup. It became a little touristic then.

Hotel Insider: I see. And then you moved to Russia.

Hotel Insider: You were with the New York headquartered Leading Hotels of the World. You were based in Ukraine though in Donetsk. What sort of a place was that, what was hospitality like there?

Jonas Amstad: It was my first real management position. It was a boutique hotel and I went there for the 2012 FIFA World Cup. We had a lot of dignitaries and high-profile guests. Donetsk is now annexed by Russia. Hotel Insider: I know Shakhtar Donetsk the football club.

Jonas Amstad: Actually, the owner of the hotel was the owner of that club.

Hotel Insider: That’s such a coincidence.

Jonas Amstad: Yes. It was a city hotel, a boutique one, we were the only five-star hotel

Jonas Amstad: Yes, I moved around a bit in Russia. I was in Moscow, Siberia, St Petersburg. I know Russia very well because I’d worked there before and I can speak the language. I was also in Azerbaijan at a Hyatt property.

Hotel Insider: You were with the Carlson Redizor Hotel Group in Russia too for almost a year.

Jonas Amstad: Yes, first I was in Alushta in the Crimean area when Crimea was occupied by Russian forces. I had very good connections to the Redizor Company because our hotel in Donetsk was managed by the same group. Our hotel in Donetsk asked me if I could help them [Redizor] in Alushta because they couldn’t find anybody who was brave enough to do that and who spoke the language. [laughs]. It was basically a project to deflag the hotel because Redizor couldn’t operate on occupied

21 Hotel Insider

territory.

Hotel Insider: That’s incredible. Did you see any violence?

Jonas Amstad: In Alushta? No. But yes, Donetsk was bombed. And our hotel there was more or less occupied by armed forces. I had a gun to my head many times. Business as usual [laughs].

Hotel Insider: [laughs] All right, let’s move on to something less morbid. You went with an Asian brand, Shangri-La, later on. What’s the difference between a Western and Eastern approach to hospitality?

Jonas Amstad: Well, it’s essentially the same thing, you cook with the same water. The reporting is different but the business is the same.

Hotel Insider: And now you're in the Maldives, an island destination, working with a Mauritian brand.

Jonas Amstad: I was actually in the Maldives earlier, I was in Villingili [in Addu] and I’ve also worked in Fiji.

Hotel Insider: How do the two compare? Fiji and the Maldives.

Jonas Amstad: Island destinations are essentially similar. Of course, there are differences but generally speaking, they aren’t that different. They attract similar sorts of clientele for example. And I think for a hotelier, it’s good to alternate between city hotels and resorts, so you don’t get stuck in one frame of mind. And of course, it’s more exciting. More cultures, languages.

Hotel Insider: What were your observations when you were in Vilingili? It’s so far down south so you won’t be getting as many clients as, say, a property in the vicinity of Male' Atoll.

Jonas Amstad: Yes, accessibility was a challenge. We managed the hotel though and it’s still running. It’s a great island, lovely

golf course.

Hotel Insider: And now you’re here with LUX*, it’s a beautiful property, very casual and idiosyncratic, it will surprise you if you’re not used to it.

Jonas Amstad: Yes, the corporate structure goes away here. It’s a bit younger and more innovative. I think it’s great to have experienced different sorts of approaches over the years because it helps you learn and find your own way of managing a hotel.

Hotel Insider: You’ve recently introduced the SolarSea concept here, the largest installation of its kind (at sea). What do you think of the guest response to that?

Jonas Amstad: It’s very positive, surprisingly positive.

Hotel Insider: Do you think it will have a positive effect on sales?

Jonas Amstad: Yes, undoubtedly. It’s having an impact now and I believe it will in the future as well. Sustainable projects like these aren’t just about the environmental or social aspects, there’s an economic aspect, and not only in terms of the diesel we save by going solar. Sustainability is a sales tool, very clearly. Guests will know that nature is preserved and protected here and they will want to visit because we, collectively, take responsibility for our environment.

Hotel Insider: Is it just European guests who’re encouraged by this? What’s the response from the east, like China?

Jonas Amstad: Oh, everybody is interested. Look at China now. When I was in China in 2003, in Shanghai, you could hardly breathe out in the city. But go to Shanghai now. It’s very clean. So, obviously they’ve cleaned up their act as well. They have to. Everybody is becoming increasingly environmentally conscious. I don’t think of it in terms of east vs west, the east is doing the same. They have no choice, and it’s good.

Hotel Insider: I see. I also wanted to ask you about OTAs versus traditional travel agents. Do you see OTAs becoming dominant in the Maldives?

Jonas Amstad: OTAs are becoming more popular, especially in cities where sites like booking.com and CTRIP [Chinese company] hold maybe 30 per cent of the market share. If you go to say, Moscow, for a couple of nights, you’re paying maybe 300 dollars for the whole thing. But it’s very different in the Maldives. You’re booking for ten days so you’re likely going to spend around ten thousand dollars. The thing you need to ask is, would you pay ten, twenty thousand dollars online? Or would you rather deal with someone in person? I think that’s why the market here is still largely dominated by traditional travel agencies.

Hotel Insider: That’s excellent. Thanks so much for your time, Jonas.

On the issue of safety and security in Maldives hospitality

The tourism industry is the backbone of the Maldives’ economy. Tourism revenue accounts for more than a third of the country’s GDP. Sun-seeking tourists are attracted to the country’s fabled natural beauty and seclusion. But the reputation of the Maldives as a peaceful and safe place is equally important. Safety concerns play a vital role in determining the success of a destination. Hotel Insider takes a look at security issues in the industry.

Hotel Insider 24

In the early days of mass tourism, the conventional wisdom was to avoid talking about safety and security. Hotel managers often avoid talking to guests about potential threats in order to avoid alarm. The Maldives is the sunny side of life after all.

But real and perceived threats do have a significant impact on arrival numbers. Holidaymakers do not want to be worried on vacation. They will go where such risks do not exist. Hoteliers will benefit from taking measures to ensure that their establishment is safe from dangers such as fire, theft, cybercrime, terrorism and natural disasters.

A fiery moment

A fire incident occurred in a high-end Maldives resort in early 2019. No one was injured but guests and staff had to be evacuated. A restaurant and seven over-water villas were destroyed and the resort had to be closed down for repairs. That meant hundreds of staff without jobs, cancellation of bookings, and refunds.

The tourism ministry has stringent preventative measures in place when it

comes to the specific threat of fire. Laws and regulations have been made to bring hotels up to international fire safety best practices. Prior to getting an operating license, it is mandatory for new resorts to have detailed fire emergency plans as well as disaster management measures such as alarm systems, extinguishers and evacuation plans.

Although rare, fire incidents still occur at hotels and resorts. Wood and thatching are the most commonly used materials in resort building. So, once it starts, the fire spreads quickly.

While the tourism ministry requires all resorts to have 75 percent of its staff trained in fire fighting, and to conduct regular fire emergency exercises, some resorts do not follow these rules.

“New resorts are required by law to have fire and safety measures in place before they are allowed to open up for business. Unfortunately, most properties just do the bare minimum to obtain the relevant license,” said Adil Naeem, the Director of Global Fire Services.

Employees need to be made aware of the evacuation strategy in order to put it into

practice in the event of a fire. Trained staff are likely to be calm in the event of a fire, which can help save lives. Fire is no joke and fire safety should not be overlooked. Insurance does not cover loss of jobs or lives lost.

Personal safety and theft

For travellers, theft and robbery are the most common threat to personal safety in every destination. While security personnel, alarm systems, cameras and safety deposit boxes are present in every hotel, these incidents still occur. In the last decade, there has been a hike in the number of cases of theft reported from resorts. In most cases, safes containing salaries and passports were stolen, and in some instances, safes were stolen from guest rooms. For women, traveling alone is a risk. Incidents like sexual harassment and physical abuse are major threats for this group of visitors.

Ensuring the safety and security of the hotel, its staff and guests should be the number one priority for hoteliers. If the existing security measures are proving to be insufficient, hoteliers could enlist the help of a security firm and invest in good security systems.

Natural disasters

Island resorts face a great threat in terms of natural disasters such as flooding, swell surges and tsunamis.

According to the World Bank, the country’s current development challenges “stem from risks from climate change, disaster resilience and environmental sustainability with rising levels of solid waste. Almost half of all settlements and over two thirds of critical infrastructure are located within 100 meters of the shoreline and are under immediate threat from rising sea levels.”

While what attracts the tourists are the overwater villas surrounded by the ocean, they are also the most vulnerable to mother nature’s fury. These remote islands are not prepared for a natural disaster. In the event of a tsunami warning, island resorts must act quickly to evacuate as soon as possible. Stocking up on enough lifeboats to evacuate hundreds of people may be costly, but they could also save the lives of hundreds.

Cyber security

Concurrent with the advancements in technology, the hospitality industry has seen tremendous growth with businesses investing in innovative technology to store and manage data. With the boost in millennial travellers and the introduction of mobile technology, more customers are using online travel agencies and internet banking. Social media is widely used to promote hotels and destinations.

While the advancement of new forms of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) have made service more efficient, they also pose new threats such as online fraud and hacking.

This presents the challenge of making the internet safer without minimising development opportunities.

A few years ago, continued Denial of Service (DoS) attacks on the server of the largest telecommunication service provider in the country disrupted internet services. There have been many cases of hacking, internet financial scams and identity theft reported, and an increased prevalence of moneygrabbing scams using mobile phones in the past few years.

New trends in cybercrimes such as phishing and botnet attacks are constantly discovered. Large amounts of data and copyrighted

material can be manipulated or stolen with the click of a mouse. There is also the threat of unauthorised access, malicious software and DoS attacks.

The increased use of new technology makes it more difficult for law enforcement officers to investigate and prosecute cybercrimes. In the Maldives, there are few laws and regulations relating to cybercrime. Deterring cybercrime is also crucial for the national security of the country. Adoption of an appropriate legislation to protect from abuse of ICTs for criminal purposes should be the highest priority for regulators, as the speed of advancement of ICTs have challenged many areas of existing legislation.

The hospitality industry relies heavily on ICTs. They extend to all the segments in the industry. Cybercrimes are a real threat to businesses. Hoteliers will benefit from securing its data and information systems, and ensuring that guests are protected from cybercrime while they are at your establishment.

Terrorism

In the past, terrorism and organised crime were not considered prominent threats. In the recent years, however, they have risen to the top of the list of threats to travellers. As tourist establishments have become a target for terrorist attacks, holiday-makers are more careful in selecting destinations they choose to travel to. And being vulnerable to attacks such as these affect travellers’ perceptions. This is apparent in the case of Sri Lanka, where the country’s tourism is still recovering from the multiple terror attacks earlier this year.

These remote islands surrounded by the ocean on all sides also make access easier. One or two security personnel making rounds might not be enough. Tourists don’t want to be worried about risks from violence when on vacation so they will go where such risks do not exist.

Hoteliers may benefit from hiring trained security staff. By checking ferries, baggage, as well as persons coming in, resorts could ensure that weapons and dangerous persons are kept out.

“Resorts need stronger security measures that cover all the threats to safety and security. Security is not a moneymaking department, it’s an expenditure but in the long run, a lot of money can be saved. And laws and regulations

need to be enacted to enforce this, because it just takes one incident to ruin the whole industry and the economy. So we need to secure this billion-dollar industry,” says Rishyf Thoha, the CEO and chief security consultant of XCOPS Security Services & Solutions.

While the country’s ‘one island one resort’ concept is a big draw, it also brings its own set of challenges when it comes to proving safety and security to its visitors.

Tourist establishments should invest in the best technology to ensure safety and security in every aspect. Instead of dealing with safety and security threats on their own, hotels should work with the authorities to find solutions and to deter targeted crimes. Creating a local network by bringing together all the agents interacting with visitors can also be an effective way to address visitor safety and security concerns.

Safety regulations should not be ignored, and strict laws and regulations are required to ensure safety and security in every aspect. Security legislations, policies and measures may need to be reviewed to ensure that tourists have legal protection against violent and organised crime.

It is also important to ensure that different sectors of tourism, such as airlines and airports, seaplane terminals, and other types of transportation follow international safety and security practices. Organised crime and terrorist attacks are usually targeted and planned in advance, and with the proper safety and security measures, they can be prevented.

The Maldives recently topped the list of countries reliant on tourism. As the success or failure of a tourism destination depends on being able to provide a safe and secure environment for its visitors, one such incident could derail the whole industry and disrupt its economy. As the country is expanding and gearing up to welcome more visitors, stringent measures are needed to safeguard the industry.

Mövenpick Resort Kuredhivaru Maldives

Mövenpick Resort Kuredhivaru Maldives continues to tell its story with the property’s first anniversary just around the corner. Now under the French hospitality and lifestyle giant Accor, the resort has a lot going on beneath the surface. And true to its roots, you can expect it to wow you during a visit.

28 Hotel Insider
29 Hotel Insider

The resort’s whimsical features blend well, like the whale skeleton by the overwater seafood restaurant Bodumas or the striking design of the main restaurant Onu Marchè. Overall, it’s a classically elegant product primed for indulgence, culinary excellence and family moments in the pristine setting of Noonu Atoll.

It’s a property with a touch of playfulness in its design. And there’s a clear sense of identity here. The resort is poised to create long-lasting moments, offering guests something that other local establishments would be hard-pressed to deliver.

Exemplifying this playful aspect best perhaps is the Onu Marchè restaurant –from outside, you notice its askew ceiling, while inside, suspended over the tables, yellow globes light up the restaurant at night. They look like fish roe or perhaps a bunch of balloons, like something straight out of Jeff Koons.

30 Hotel Insider

Like its sister restaurant Onu Marchè, Latitude 5.5 is constructed out of bamboo, a nod towards Eastern architecture. Named after its geographical location, the outlet offers toothsome ala carte lunches and dinners. It’s right by the main pool so feel free to have a dip and absorb the sunset with a tall drink in hand.

Rooms are spacious, glass floors grace the entrance in all 72 overwater villas. High peaked ceilings make the interiors feel spacious while floor to ceiling glass walls draw you to the splendour of the world outside. The elegant bathrooms are just as large as the living spaces, and you get your sliver of the lagoon within.

Resort Review

We’ve barely touched on the one subject that Mövenpick properties are known for. Food is serious business here and seriously good. The buffets at Onu Marchè are magnificent, and we don’t say that lightly. Meats, cheeses, absurdly good dips – truly rave-worthy fare from around the globe awaits you here. Onu Marchè offers a varied selection during buffet breakfast and its weeklong themed dinners in a casual atmosphere. And while you’re at it, treat yourself to a scoop or two of the fabled Mövenpick ice-cream.

Meanwhile, Latitude serves up homemade burgers, pizzas, and freshly grilled meats, truly sumptuous treats. And true to its nautical name, Bodumas offers a rich, seafood-oriented menu while ensuring meat isn’t left out. And all Mövenpick properties have a “chocolate hour” every day from 4 to 5 pm – and it is exactly what you think it is. Sixty minutes of sweet, indulgent treats, on the house. Can you think of a better way to wind up an afternoon? Neither can we.

No trip is complete without a visit to the spa. Here at the Sun Spa, five of nine treatment rooms sit over the glassy Noonu Atoll waters. The views are remarkable, and under expert care, Mövenpick’s signature massage, which evokes the movements of the waves, rejuvenates your body and mind. Afterwards, you are a person reborn. And of course, all Sun Spa products are natural and organic.

SolarSea at LUX*

South Ari Atoll

Let’s take a look at the SolarSea project by Swimsol at LUX* South Ari Atoll. Swimsol is an exciting company with some cool ideas for going solar, especially in a setting like the Maldives. LUX* South Ari

Atoll, meanwhile, took home the “Leading Eco-Friendly resort in the Maldives” award at the South Asian Travel Awards (SATA) held in Galle, Sri Lanka in September. Great things happen when properties start thinking outside the box and collaborate on projects.

Working with Swimsol is a breeze. They order material, import them and send them out to the resort. Assembly takes place on-site, platform by platform. They can be assembled on a neighbouring island and towed to their final location but at LUX* South Ari, assembly took place on the beach.

Here’s the crew on the beach preparing the mooring. You can see someone who’s just got out of the water, too. It’s hard work and rewarding, like most good things in life.
Hotel Insider 34

Here at the resort, all suitable rooftops are covered with solar PV panels – a project that was completed in March 2019. The rooftop system was around since December 2018, while expansion finished in March 2019, with the addition of two buildings. Observe one SolarSea platform, already in its permanent location, while the other rests near the beach waiting to be towed.

The platforms are towed to their final location – you can see the towing boat in the right-hand corner. Five of the platforms are moored (by a team of snorkellers) and the other has ropes attached, which the marine team members grab and pull with ropes and then moor.

3
4 35 Hotel Insider

Finally, all six are in place! The platforms are anchored over sand and seagrass so they won't harm marine life. Eventually, these platforms become the settling ground for coral larvae. They look so pretty from above, and together these beauties produce around 190kW. The yield is higher on the water than on roofs as the ocean has a cooling effect on the solar panels. SolarSea has a 10 per cent higher output than a similar-sized rooftop system.

Here’s the team – a multinational crew of Europeans, Maldivians and Bangladeshis. Whoever joins can learn a lot. Swimsol welcomes youth who’ve just finished school as well as experienced senior engineers. It's a multidisciplinary team, with members being equally at home on rooftops and in the water.

XCOPS Security Services & Solutions

“Only the wise strive for security. Ensure you’re secure.”

XCOPS Security Services & Solutions is the only nextgeneration professional security service provider in the Maldives, offering an extensive line of professional security services and solutions, especially for the tourism industry.

Spotlight 38 Hotel Insider

Armed with over 20 years of combined military and police experience, they are a highly-motivated and qualified team of professionals with a focus to build a reputation for having unmatched security solutions.

XCOPS was formed by an ex-soldier and law enforcement professional highly trained in law enforcement strategies and military operations. His certifications range from anti-terror to asset and personal security. The company recognises the importance of providing a professional security and safety solution to the tourism industry and other industries that support our economy.

The company was formed to enhance the quality of life of its clients, by setting standards of excellence in providing professional security and risk control services while committing to its core values and practicing what is in its DNA: professionalism, honesty, passion, teamwork, and development.

The company’s services extend to security consultancy and risk management, the development of security policies and procedures, master plans, security packages, standardising security design, security systems design, review and engineering, residential security assessments, ad hoc security consultancy services, business continuity and crisis response.

XCOPS is the preferred security partner of International SOS & Control Risks for the Southeast Asian region for eight consecutive years. It has worked with international security and investigation firms such as Pinkerton and Control Risks in different platforms. It is also the country’s first security firm that serves its clients with a strong liability insurance policy.

Since its inception in 2011, the company has extended its services to several top players in the hospitality industry. XCOPS employs over 78 trained staff who are committed to protect, serve, and save lives. Following recruitment and medical check-ups, the security staff receive extensive training that include security duties, life and rescue training, firefighting, emergency first responder training, and unarmed combat for self-defence. The company also has a specialist operations team (SOT), which reacts to and provides support in emergencies in hostile environments. They are also trained to give first aid and learn lifesaving techniques.

For currently operating resorts and hotels, the security staff are trained every day on the job along with patrolling and security duties. The company also works with the clients’ security departments to ensure that guests are informed of weather conditions with

a weather board and draws up evacuation procedures and maps with emergency evacuation points to inform guests.

The company also goes the extra mile with establishing seaplane and ferry security that travels between resort islands, aspects often overlooked at most resorts. They also stress the importance of checking bags and packages to ensure that all such items that arrive at the island are thoroughly checked. Persons are frisked with the help of handheld scanners. Every single detail is followed for everyone, ensuring risk is minimised. There are no ‘untouchables’ when it comes to the safety and security of XCOPS’s clients.

Another important factor that is often ignored is informing and training the resort staff for emergencies and evacuation procedures. XCOPS ensures that the staff who have the most interaction with guests, such as butlers, room attendants, and waiters are well-informed and trained along with security officers to ensure a streamlined process when it comes to emergencies and evacuations

Preparing its clients for natural and man-made disasters and incidents such as tsunamis, fire hazards, medical emergencies, and ensuring that guests and employees are safe from threats such as theft, sexual harassment, drug abuse, employee disputes, are a priority for the company. However, XCOPS recognises the importance of taking measures to avoid and minimise any incidents, because they believe that businesses will benefit from these preventative measures in the long run by avoiding the cost of dealing with the consequences of such incidents. This is reflected in their ethos as well: “Only the wise strive for security. Ensure you’re secure.”

The company’s services also extend to the marine security sector of the industry. As the industry expands and increasing numbers of luxury yachts attract tourists every year, ensuring the safety of guests and protecting their valuables are of utmost importance. Vessels are vulnerable to robbers, hijackers, and terrorists. Being surrounded by the deep sea, guests are also vulnerable to accidents and incidents such as drowning.

XCOPS team members are highly experienced and qualified former coast guards, military and law enforcement personnel. Each member is trained to handle any hostile situation. Crew training and security plans have proven sufficient in most cases when it comes to vessels, but it is wiser to be safe than sorry. Therefore, the company’s services include providing specified training through sessions and drills along with preparing the vessel to counter against a potential piracy threat. The company also advises the captain on anti-piracy measures

and come up with theft-defence tactics tailored to the vessels’ specific features. This is done by collecting information, and by analysing the situation and assessing the threat level to ensure that the surveillance systems are adjusted accordingly. By adhering to the industry’s security guidelines, surprises can be avoided and in turn, the crew, its guests and the vessel are protected.

Services in the marine sector include providing marine security officers and maritime liaison officers, maritime security consultancy, fleet management, crisis response, dock security services, close protection, superyacht 24/7 surveillance, project management for new builds, maritime security training, lifeguards, and rescue diving.

XCOPS’s services extend beyond the tourism industry as well. The company offers industrial and corporate services such as protective security, compliance investigation, financial asset investigation, business control surveys, specialised investigations, insurance support, security and safety systems and technological services.

The company has its security teams in seven luxury resorts at the moment. Instead of having a large portfolio over the years, the company has maintained its focus on providing a holistic service to clients by ensuring the standards are maintained over the years. Its staff based in resorts regularly save guests from drowning, and other incidents.

For XCOPS, it is an honour to protect and save lives.

Working Women

Rafaaf Wahid

Restaurant Hostess, Hurawalhi Island Resort
44 Hotel Insider

If there’s a story that breaks stereotypes, it’s Rafaaf Wahid’s. A 21-year-old from Lhaviyani Naifaru, she joined Hurawalhi in May 2018 soon after finishing A-Levels at Villa International High School in Male'. At high school, she wanted to continue studying tourism but it didn’t materialise – not enough students chose the subject as an option. Fresh from school at Hurawalhi, she started out operating the telephone. But she didn’t have to stay behind the curtain for too long – before a year had elapsed, she was recognised by many guests and she became the island’s first hijabi restaurant hostess. Oh, and she has a little hobby which she indulges in whenever the occasion arises. Read to find out more.

Hotel Insider: You studied tourism in secondary school and now you’re working at an exceptional resort. Was this something you’d planned on?

Rafaaf Wahid: I’ve been interested in hospitality since secondary school. I know it sounds a bit corny but really, I’ve always thought that it’s a fascinating area of study. I think what really struck me was dealing with people of different backgrounds and nationalities. And yes, I wanted to work in a resort after studies, but I didn’t have a concrete plan as such.

Hotel Insider: How did your family react when you told them you wanted to work here? Were you at all worried they might not approve?

Rafaaf Wahid: Yes, at first I thought they wouldn’t like it. Because a lot of people believe that resorts have a really negative influence on those that work there, especially on women. But my mum was really supportive when I told her I was thinking of applying [to a resort for work]. She said it was up to me to choose where I wanted to work. And I believe that if you are disciplined, you will stay true to yourself. My dad works here at Hurawalhi actually, in their maintenance section, and I believe that helped as well [laughs].

Hotel Insider: [laughs] Yeah, I bet. How did you find a job here? And why Hurawalhi?

Rafaaf Wahid: I saw a job opening here and applied. I’m the eldest in my family so I feel that I have a fair bit of responsibility. And my home island [Naifaru] is close by, so if there’s an emergency, it won’t be hard for me to go back home. I really wanted to work in a resort in this atoll, so I was very glad when I got the chance to join the team here.

Hotel Insider: Any other reason besides convenience?

Rafaaf Wahid: My dad said this would be a great place to start out in hospitality. So, I thought, why not? [laughs]. I wanted to begin from the very bottom and work my way up. I was a telephone operator for nine months.

Hotel Insider: What was that like?

Rafaaf Wahid: I had to handle calls and help out at the front office when things got busy. But overall, there wasn’t much interaction between myself and the guests. I sat in the back office mostly. Occasionally, I’d have to deal with guests checking out, sometimes very early in the morning, when I was on the night shift.

Hotel Insider: And now you’re a hostess at the restaurant.

Rafaaf Wahid: Yes, it’s really cool because I get to interact with guests all the time. It’s what I had in mind when I applied for a job here. I asked them if there was a possibility of me becoming an island host. It was the GM who noticed me first when I was dealing with guests who were checking out. I liked talking to them while they waited and he picked up on that. And the GM decided that I could work in a couple of departments like housekeeping, F&B, and then become an island host. I’m with F&B right now but soon I will be an island host.

Hotel Insider: That’s pretty cool. So, what have you learned so far from this experience?

Rafaaf Wahid: I believe I have a pretty broad understanding of how things work at the front office. And I’ve been here at F&B for a few months now, so I know my way around this department too. And I think my stint at the front office is paying off – I have a broad knowledge of the resort, like where places are, what guests can do here and so on. So, when a guest asks me something about the property, I can help them out.

Hotel Insider: What sort of questions would a guest ask, usually?

Rafaaf Wahid: [laughs] They might want to know the opening hours of the resort’s boutique for example. Or they might be going diving and want to know whom to contact. And because I was a phone operator, I know quite a few numbers by heart [laughs].

Hotel Insider: That must be really handy. So, how do you see this journey of yours so far? Do you think you might consider a career in hospitality?

Rafaaf Wahid: Yeah, what I wanted initially was to see how it was, to test the waters. And if I didn’t like it, I’d choose something different.

But I’ve really come to value the decision I made to work here, and in hospitality in general. It’s the country’s main industry and I feel there are many opportunities for me to grow. Oh, and I forgot to mention that I’m an unofficial make-up artist here.

Hotel Insider: That’s awesome. Tell us more.

Rafaaf Wahid: It’s something I’ve been doing since high school, I even have an Instagram page [@Rafaaf_]. I help beautify brides here, mostly at the spa and salon. Sometimes, I even to go to Male' on off days for weddings. The resort is very understanding, though, and they’re very encouraging.

Hotel Insider: Yeah. It’s great when resorts encourage passion projects of their staff. All right. So, do you plan to continue your studies?

Rafaaf Wahid: Yes, of course. But for now, I’m just focussing on being an island host and once I achieve that I’ll concentrate on studies. I think people in this industry really value experience. And a working background in hospitality, especially at a resort like Hurawalhi, will be a huge boost to my career.

Hotel Insider: Great chatting with you, Rafa. And the best of luck with everything.

While you may associate many things with LUX*, surfing is probably not one of them.

The North Male' Atoll property has debuted what it’s dubbed The LUX* Break, which the resort claims is ideal for kite and wave surfing.

That claim would have been unfounded but the resort’s got the seal of approval from Russian national champion of Kite Freestyle, Evgeny (Jackson) Novozheev, who’s endorsed LUX* NMA’s various surf spots.

Jackson is a Guinness world record holder – he was first to cross the Bering Strait from Russia to Alaska, which he accomplished in 2011.

“The resort is a kite surfer’s paradise with its wind conditions, shallow waters and warm temperatures. The breezier months from May to September offers wind speeds between 11 and 20 knots, complemented by the spacious lagoon as well as the nearby sandbank, which is perfect for kite surfers to take off in any direction. Beginners can also use the sandbank as a playground to learn to manoeuvre the equipment. Overall, the light to medium consistent winds are perfect for kite foiling,” says Jackson.

Meanwhile, the LUX* Break, just five minutes from the resort, serves up surf for wave enthusiasts of all levels

of experience. Beginners can enlist the help of surf instructors who’ll do one-onone instruction.

The resort has partnered up with Best Dives to offer the highest standards of equipment for rent from PASSION MKIX and VISION MKIX

kites to BLISS 39 V5 LTD and PLACEBO V6 M boards, as well as board binding, fins, harnesses and pumps.

Condé Nast readers name Naladhu Private Island ‘Best Resort’ in the Indian Ocean

For the third time in a row, Naladhu Private Island was recognised as the “Best Resort in the Indian Ocean” by Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards 2019. The awards got bigger this year with the combination of the magazine’s US and UK readership.

The luxurious Naladhu Private Island has just 20 villas, making it super-exclusive. Experiences on the island are bespoke, with round-the-clock restaurant timings and 24/7 butler and spa service.

The property also offers

buyouts of the entire island for unparalleled exclusivity and privacy, and is unsurprisingly a favourite of royalty, celebrities and Fortune 500-ers.

“It is a privilege to be chosen by the Condé Nast Traveler readers around the world three years in a row. Receiving

this award consecutively is testament to the team’s passion and dedication, inspiring us to continue to enhance our exceptional experience offered to guests.” says Giles Selves, general manager of Naladhu Private Island Maldives.
