As a content creator for RAYS, I’ve had the privilege of seeing the Maldivian archipelago from a unique perspective—through the panoramic windows of a Manta Air flight. The view is a cartographer’s dream: a mesmerising tapestry of turquoise lagoons, sapphire-blue channels, and emerald-green islands fringed with brilliant white sand. It’s a sight that never loses its magic. On this particular journey, our destination was a name that hums with promise: Dhigufaru, nestled in the heart of the Maldives’ only UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the Baa Atoll. The flight itself is the perfect overture, a sublime 40-minute aerial tour that sets the stage for the symphony of nature and luxury that awaits.
The Arrival: A Symphony in Turquoise
The final approach to Dhigufaru is breathtaking. The seaplane glides lower, the sound of its engines a gentle hum against the vastness of the Indian Ocean. Below, the island reveals itself: a perfect teardrop of lush vegetation,
encircled by a halo of sand and a sprawling, impossibly vibrant lagoon. We touched down on the water with a gentle spray, taxiing towards a long, inviting jetty that stretched out like a welcoming arm from the island’s shore.
Stepping onto the jetty, the transition from travel to tranquility is instantaneous. The warm, fragrant air, the gentle sea breeze, and the rhythmic beat of Boduberu drums create an immediate sense of place. We were greeted not as guests, but as cherished friends, with beaming smiles, refreshing, chilled coconut water and a cool towel. This is the hallmark of Maldivian hospitality, and at Dhigufaru, it feels instinctual and deeply genuine. The check-in process is a formality handled with effortless grace, not in a lobby, but in the open-air reception, with sand between your toes and the ocean in full view.
The Abode: A Sanctuary of Serenity
Dhigufaru offers a beautiful dilemma when it comes to
accommodation: do you choose the verdant seclusion of the beach or the mesmerising allure of the water? My home for the stay was a Veli Pool Water Villa, an exquisite overwater bungalow that felt less like a room and more like a private piece of the ocean.
Suspended on stilts above the shimmering lagoon, the villa is a masterpiece of tropical design. A high, thatched roof arches over a spacious, airy interior, where natural wood and a calming, neutral palette are accented with splashes of colour inspired by the sea. The centrepiece is a magnificent king-sized bed, perfectly positioned to face a wall of glass that slides open completely, erasing the boundary between indoors and out. Waking up to an uninterrupted panorama of the turquoise horizon is a memory I will forever cherish.
The exterior deck is a private paradise. A comfortable daybed invites lazy afternoons with a book, while two sun loungers are poised for soaking up the
Maldivian sun. The true jewel, however, is the private infinity plunge pool. Seemingly melting into the lagoon below, it offers a cool respite at any time of day. Best of all are the steps leading directly from the deck into the warm, crystalline waters of the lagoon. An impromptu snorkel or a simple, refreshing dip is only ever a few steps away.
While I was captivated by my overwater haven, I also explored the Boaku Pool Beach Villas. Tucked away amidst the island’s lush foliage, these villas offer a different kind of magic. They provide the ultimate privacy, with a direct, private path to your own stretch of the island’s pristine, powder-soft beach. Here, the soundtrack is the gentle rustle of palm fronds and the soft shush of waves on the shore. These villas are perfect for families or those who love the feeling of sand beneath their feet the moment they step outside.
A Gastronomic Voyage Dining at Dhigufaru is an adventure for the palate, a journey through local and international flavours, always underscored by incredible freshness and stunning settings.
The main restaurant, Dhandifulhu, is a beautiful, sand-floored space offering expansive buffet-style dining for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. To call it a buffet, however, feels like an understatement. It’s a global culinary showcase, with live cooking stations preparing fresh pasta, grilled-to-order seafood, and sizzling stir-fries. The Maldivian corner was a daily highlight, offering authentic curries, fresh Mashuni, and other local delicacies that provide a true taste of the islands.
For a more intimate, à la carte experience, Athiri is the quintessential romantic dining spot. Situated on the beach, it’s the perfect place to watch the sun
dip below the horizon, painting the sky in fiery shades of orange, pink, and gold. The menu focuses on premium seafood and grilled meats. Dining here, with the sound of the waves as our soundtrack and a canopy of stars emerging above, felt like a scene from a movie. The grilled lobster, fresh from the ocean, was succulent, sweet, and utterly unforgettable.
The social heart of the island is the Thundi Pool Bar. Overlooking the main infinity pool and the beach, it’s the hub of relaxation. Here, expert mixologists craft creative cocktails (and mocktails) while you recline on a poolside cabana. It’s the ideal spot for a light lunch, a sundowner, or simply to while away the hours in blissful contentment.
The Heart of the Atoll: Adventures in the UNESCO Biosphere Dhigufaru’s location in the Baa Atoll is its superpower. This UNESCO Biosphere Reserve is a world-renowned hotspot for marine biodiversity, and the resort provides the perfect gateway to its wonders.
The house reef, easily accessible from the shore, is a vibrant underwater city teeming with life.
On my first snorkel, I was greeted by a friendly sea turtle, who swam alongside me for a few minutes before gliding gracefully away. Schools of colourful parrotfish, angelfish, and clownfish darted amongst the corals, while harmless blacktip reef sharks patrolled the deeper edges.
The resort’s dive centre, run by a passionate and professional team, unlocks the atoll’s most famous sites. But the ultimate
prize, the experience that draws people from across the globe, is an excursion to the legendary Hanifaru Bay. From May to November, this protected marine area becomes the world’s largest known feeding station for manta rays, and often, whale sharks. While seasonal, the chance to witness this breathtaking spectacle of nature is a primary reason to visit Baa Atoll, and Dhigufaru is perfectly poised
to make this dream a reality.
Beyond diving and snorkelling, a host of water sports are available, from kayaking across the calm lagoon to the thrill of jet-skiing and windsurfing. Sunset fishing trips are a cultural and recreational highlight, offering a chance to learn traditional Maldivian fishing techniques and have the chef prepare your catch for dinner the next day.
Rejuvenation at Funa Spa
No Maldivian escape is complete without indulging in a spa treatment, and the Funa Spa at Dhigufaru is a destination in itself. The spa’s treatment rooms are set over the water, each with a glass panel in the floor, allowing you to gaze at the marine life below as expert hands work their magic. I opted for a traditional Maldivian massage, which uses long, flowing strokes and fragrant, locally sourced coconut oil to soothe tired muscles and calm the mind. The entire experience—the gentle lapping of the waves, the subtle scent of frangipani, and the expert touch of the therapist— was profoundly restorative.
The Reluctant Farewell
Leaving paradise is never easy. As the Manta Air seaplane lifted off the water for the return journey, I looked down at Dhigufaru one last time. It looked just as it did on arrival: a perfect emerald jewel in a turquoise sea. But now, it was imbued with memories of warm smiles, spectacular sunsets, underwater wonders, and profound peace.
Dhigufaru is more than just a resort; it’s an experience that captures the very soul of the Maldives. It’s a place where luxury feels natural, not imposed, and where the stunning beauty of the environment is the main event. of which is the manta ray—one of the largest and most charismatic ray species in the world. The archipelago also hosts eagle rays, mobula rays, and various species of stingrays that inhabit lagoons, reefs, and sandy seabeds.
• Manta Rays (Mobula alfredi): These gentle filter feeders can grow up to five meters wide and are often seen gliding through the ocean with their mouths open, feeding on plankton. Unlike stingrays, manta rays have no stingers and pose no threat to humans.
• Stingrays: Commonly found in shallow lagoons, these bottomdwellers are generally peaceful but should be given space to avoid provoking a defensive response.

and world-renowned hotspot for manta ray gatherings. During the southwest monsoon (May to November), plankton-rich currents attract dozens—sometimes hundreds—of manta rays in spectacular feeding frenzies.
• North Malé Atoll – Lankan Manta Point & Rasfari North: Lankan Manta Point, a popular cleaning station, is best visited between May and November. Here, divers and snorkelers can watch mantas hover above coral outcrops while cleaner wrasse groom them. Rasfari North, a shallow reef, offers
great snorkelling opportunities from December to April.
• South Ari Atoll:
While better known for whale sharks, this region also attracts manta rays, especially during the northeast monsoon (October to May). Divers often report close encounters with mantas at well-known dive sites.
• Addu Atoll:
Located in the far south, Addu is considered a manta ray paradise, with reliable sightings year-round. It’s one of the few places where reef mantas can be seen even during the low season, making it a must-visit for serious underwater enthusiasts.

For the passengers of Manta Air, the pilots and cabin crew are the familiar faces of the airline. Yet, the Ramp Team’s role is just as fundamental to a smooth travel experience. As the team themselves put it, they operate like a finely tuned machine, a collective where each member has a specific, vital role, and everyone depends on each other to keep the operation moving towards take-off. This feature delves into their world, offering a unique glimpse into the critical part they play long before you step onto the aircraft.
A Day in the Life: A Race Against the Clock
The day for a Ramp Team member begins in the early hours of the morning, well before the first passengers arrive at the terminal. Their first order of business is preparation. They meticulously check flight schedules, confirm aircraft parking positions, and prepare all the necessary catering and ground equipment, setting the stage for the day’s arrivals.
The moment a Manta Air aircraft touches down, the team springs into a highly coordinated sequence of tasks. “Once a plane lands, we spring into action,” a team member explains. This is the “turnaround,” a critical window where efficiency and safety are paramount. Some team members are tasked with handling baggage, ensuring it’s swiftly and carefully unloaded and transported to the terminal. Simultaneously, others are cleaning the cabin, restocking supplies, and loading everything needed for the next departure. Every action is part of a larger, interconnected process. From handling passengers to prepping flight supplies, each role is
indispensable. It’s a process that is highly coordinated, but as the team notes, “when everything clicks, it’s a great feeling”.
Thriving Under Pressure: Weathering the Storm
The Maldivian weather, while beautiful, can be intense and unpredictable, presenting significant challenges for those working on the exposed tarmac. The team admits that the heat can be physically draining, leading to fatigue, while sudden rain can slow down the entire operation. However, their approach to these challenges is a testament to their professionalism and camaraderie.
They proactively manage the heat by rotating roles to prevent exhaustion and constantly keep an eye on each other’s well-being. During downpours, their focus shifts to protecting passenger belongings, taking extra care to shield baggage and cargo from the elements to ensure a smooth travel experience continues, rain or shine.
This spirit of collaborative problem-solving was put to the ultimate test during one particularly challenging incident. “One challenging situation we faced when weather changed unexpectedly and very quickly, causing inbound seaplanes to be diverted or delayed,” the team recalls. The carefully planned schedule was thrown into disarray, and with passengers at risk of missing their international connections, anxiety began to build.
Instantly, the Ramp Team shifted into “coordination mode”. A group was assigned to monitor the fluid aircraft movements, relaying realtime information to the transfer teams at the international terminal. Another group immediately began mobilising vehicles and equipment for rapid transfers. Communication became the linchpin of the operation. The team was in constant contact with international airlines, providing updates that were effective enough to convince them to stretch their cutoff timings. It was a high-pressure situation that lasted for hours, but through exceptional teamwork, they not only managed the crisis but also successfully ensured every single guest connected with their international flight.
The Unseen Science of a Safe Flight
While speed is crucial for a “timely turnaround,” it never comes at the expense of safety. Safety is the team’s top priority, embedded in their routines through doublechecks and unwavering adherence to standard operating procedures. This focus is rooted in extensive classroom and on-the-ground training, which equips them to handle complex equipment and passengers with the utmost care.
However, the team reveals that the “real magic” lies in communication and teamwork. Clear and constant updates over the radio keep everyone synchronised, allowing them
to anticipate the next step and maintain momentum. This seamless coordination enables them to perform lessobvious but critical tasks that are vital for flight safety.
One of the most critical of these tasks is managing the aircraft’s center of gravity. In coordination with the flight crew and following the official aircraft weight and balance documents, the team meticulously loads all cargo and baggage to ensure the aircraft remains perfectly balanced in the air. “It’s quiet work, but it’s what keeps flights safe and smooth,” they state. This is not just manual labor; it is a precise science that directly contributes to the safety

loading agents, stepped up. They communicated clearly and worked together flawlessly to successfully transfer a patient to a hospital. The genuine appreciation they received afterward made all the effort worthwhile, reinforcing the profound impact of their work.
This deep-seated culture of teamwork is what sustains them, especially during peak travel seasons and unexpected disruptions. “We depend on each other,” a team member
shares. While everyone knows their specific role, they remain flexible, ready to jump in and help wherever needed, whether it’s lending a hand with baggage or assisting with passenger boarding. This mutual support keeps the operation running and morale high, even in chaos.
If there is one thing the Ramp Team wishes passengers knew, it’s the sheer scale of coordination that happens behind the scenes. “Our ramp team works around the clock constantly coordinating with different departments before even passengers were called to the boarding gate,” they explain. It’s a relentless combination of logistics, hard work, and teamwork, all dedicated to one goal: ensuring every passenger arrives safely to begin their Maldivian holiday.

continuously improving their technical skills and supporting each other through training and shared knowledge. ‘TUNA PARADISE’
For many, the allure of the Maldives lies in its serene seas and inviting beaches. Yet, for Mark Wiens, a prominent YouTube content creator, the archipelago presented itself as a “tuna paradise.” Wiens, who boasts over 11 million subscribers, openly approved of Maldivian cuisine, declaring the nation a must-visit destination for its food alone.
Wiens’s approach involves travelling to various countries, experiencing their food, and sharing these culinary journeys with his vast audience. The significant role seafood plays in the Maldivian diet particularly drew his interest.
His recent Maldivian adventure was filmed in Hithadhoo, Addu. His videos, posted on YouTube, offer a detailed look at a typical day of eating. Wiens chronicled every meal he consumed over a 24-hour period.
During his stay, he prepared and tasted a variety of local fare. He also emphasised to his followers that the Maldives is a prime location to sample dishes crafted with diverse types of fish.
The video also captures a segment where Wiens enjoyed morning tea at an Addu residence. Here, he sampled a range of items such as Mashuni, Kulhimas and Rihaakuru. He even took the opportunity to prepare and taste Mashuni when prompted.
His exploration extended to an Addu field, where he consumed coconut and other locally grown items. Holding a cup containing spicy paste, commonly used in local preparations, he observed the unique flavours they imparted. His field meal also included coconuts and Rihaakuru.

We stayed at Maagiri for one night on our return trip from the Maldives prior to catching our flight back to Australia. We were thoroughly impressed with this hotel. The service, facilities, food, cleanliness & location are all excellent. We stayed in an executive suite which was very modern, clean & it comfortably fit our family of 4. The food was tasty & very high quality. We loved Sri Lankan buffet offered on a Saturday night. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone requiring a transit hotel or for business in Male. 10/10 experience!

Islands such as Fuvahmulah, Addu Atoll, and Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll—notably Vaadhoo, Gadhdhoo, Hoadedhdhoo, and Fiyoree—are known for growing taro in abundance. The magic of the Maldives begins not upon arrival at a resort, but in the moments suspended between sea and sky. As a content creator for Manta Air, I’ve been privileged to experience this unique transition countless times, yet it never loses its power. The view from the window of a Manta Air seaplane is a cartographer’s dream: a mesmerising tapestry of turquoise lagoons, sapphireblue channels, and emerald-green islands fringed with brilliant white sand. This journey, a seamless and breathtaking experience in itself, was the perfect overture to my destination: Nika Island Resort & Spa, a jewel in the North Ari Atoll.
Manta Air prides itself on its motto, “Your Tropics, Your Time,” a promise of a refined and relaxed journey. This philosophy finds its perfect partner in Nika. As the seaplane gracefully descended towards a floating pontoon, the resort came into focus—not as a modern architectural statement, but as something more organic, more settled. A traditional Maldivian dhoni, its gentle curves a beautiful contrast to the sleek lines of the aircraft, was already
waiting to ferry us the final few hundred meters to the island. This thoughtful handover, from stateof-the-art air travel to timeless sea-faring tradition, was our first clue: Nika does things differently.
Stepping onto the jetty is like stepping back in time, into a vision of the Maldives as it once was. Nika is one of the pioneering resorts in the archipelago, a living piece of history lovingly preserved and curated since its inception in 1983. There are no sprawling water villa complexes that dominate the horizon; instead, the island’s dense, mature vegetation feels like the main event. Towering palms, ancient banyan trees, and fragrant frangipani groves create a lush canopy that conceals the resort’s secrets, promising discovery and seclusion.
The welcome was not one of rehearsed corporate hospitality, but of genuine, heartfelt warmth. We were greeted with cool towels, fresh coconut water, and smiles that reached the eyes of the staff. This authenticity, we would soon learn, is the cornerstone of the Nika experience.
A Sanctuary of Your Own
The single most defining feature of Nika, and what truly sets it apart in a nation of stunning resorts, is its revolutionary approach to accommodation. While the world flocks to the iconic overwater bungalow, Nika’s founder, an Italian visionary, conceived of something perhaps even more luxurious: the private beach.
We were escorted to our Deluxe Beach Villa, one of only a handful of residences on the island.
The villa itself is a masterpiece of bioclimatic architecture, its unique, shell-like form designed to harmonise with the environment.
The walls, built from fossilised coral, tell a story of the island itself (a practice no longer permitted, making these villas historical artifacts). Inside, the space is generous and comfortable, with high ceilings, rustic wooden furniture, and a magnificent open-air bathroom where you can shower under the stars.
But the true revelation lies beyond the patio doors. Each beach villa opens onto its own secluded, private stretch of pristine sand,
complete with a personal jacuzzi, a Maldivian swing (undhoali), sun loungers, and a thatched-roof cabana. This wasn’t just a slice of beach; it was our own private paradise, completely shielded from view by immaculate hedges of tropical foliage. The feeling of absolute privacy is profound. To be able to step from your room, walk barefoot across your own private sand, and slip into the warm, crystalline water of your own private lagoon is an unparalleled luxury. It’s an experience of solitude and freedom that is increasingly rare in the modern world.
The Italian Soul
If the island’s physical form is its Maldivian heart, then its soul is unequivocally Italian. This is not a superficial theme; it’s a deeply ingrained part of Nika’s identity. The day is punctuated by charming Italian rituals, the most beloved of which is the evening aperitivo. As the sun begins its spectacular descent, casting hues of orange, pink, and gold across the sky, guests and staff gather at the main bar overlooking the water. Complimentary prosecco and delicious canapés are served, fostering a sense of community and convivial conversation.
This spirit infuses gastronomy. The main restaurant, where you dine with your feet in the soft sand, offers a masterful buffet that marries the best of both worlds. One evening, we would delight in delicate, handmade pasta and rich, flavourful risottos that would be at home in any Roman trattoria. Next, we would feast on spicy Maldivian fish curries, freshly grilled reef fish caught that day, and an array of exotic local fruits and vegetables. The quality is exceptional, driven by fresh ingredients and a passion for simple, powerful flavours.
For a more intimate experience,
the resort’s coffee shop, nestled under the palms, serves à la carte lunches, while private dinners can be arranged on a secluded sandbank or the end of the jetty—moments curated for pure romance.
Exploring the Depths and the Self
The beauty of Nika extends far beyond its shores. The house reef is a thriving, vibrant ecosystem, easily accessible from the beach. Within minutes of snorkelling, we were greeted by a resident sea turtle, gliding effortlessly through the water. Schools of kaleidoscopic fish

swarmed around the healthy coral formations, and we spotted majestic eagle rays in the deeper blue. For those more adventurous, the resort’s PADI-certified dive centre offers expeditions to some of the Ari Atoll’s most legendary sites, renowned for their pelagic encounters, including sharks and, of course, the gentle giants for which Manta Air is named.
For wellness and rejuvenation, the Nika Spa is a sanctuary within a sanctuary. Set around a serene lotus pond, the spa villas offer a range of treatments inspired by both Asian and
European traditions. The gentle rustle of palm leaves and the subtle scent of essential oils create an atmosphere of profound peace, making it the perfect place to unwind and reconnect with oneself.
