NAVIGATING SKIES:
Mohamed Hamza Ahmed’s journey with Manta Air
A career in aviation is a lifelong passion for many, and for Mohamed Hamza Ahmed, it began at an early age. His career has taken flight in one of the most unique environments in the world—the Maldives. With over two decades of experience, including a significant role at Manta Air, Hamza has not only mastered the skies but also helped shape the future of aviation in the Maldives.
From a young age, Hamza was captivated by aircraft and the sound of jets, with dreams of becoming a fighter pilot. “My father had a military background, and I always wanted to join the military to fly fighter jets,” he shares. However, since the Maldives did not have an Air Force, Hamza pursued the next best thing—seaplane piloting.
His aviation journey began in 2002 as a First Officer. Since then, the aviation landscape in the Maldives has evolved dramatically. “There have been countless innovations: sophisticated avionics systems and stringent safety protocols that have transformed how we fly,” says Hamza.
With over 22 years in the cockpit, Hamza emphasises the importance of resilience, forward-thinking, and adaptability in aviation. “I’ve often had to make tough calls under pressure and constantly adapt to new technology and regulations.” These experiences have shaped his leadership style, where clarity and precision in communication are essential. Hamza stresses the importance of teamwork, believing that collaboration is key to achieving any set goals.
Aviation in the Maldives, particularly seaplane operations, differs greatly from traditional flight schools. Hamza recalls the need to quickly adapt upon entering this unique sector. “Over time, seaplane operations and domestic movements grew so fast that everyone had to adapt to new procedures, new technology, and passenger expectations at a very fast pace.”
Despite these challenges, his extensive experience in aviation has equipped him with the ability to communicate effectively, stay calm under pressure, and navigate complex situations with confidence.
The Maldives, renowned for its beauty, relies heavily on aviation to connect its islands and support its tourism-driven economy. “Aviation is crucial for connecting the islands and supporting tourism,” Hamza explains, highlighting the vital role of Air Traffic Control (ATC) in modernising these connections. The Maldives’ aviation sector, set apart by both its stunning geography and essential economic role, continues to evolve.
As a key leader at Manta Air, Hamza is focused on several strategies to ensure the airline’s longterm growth. “I will develop a strong operational framework, emphasise safety and efficiency, and foster an understanding of the importance of customer satisfaction,” he shares. Hamza believes these principles are vital for the airline to thrive in the competitive aviation industry.
The global travel industry is constantly changing, and the Maldives is at the forefront of these evolving trends. “People are craving unique experiences more than ever, from eco-tourism to digital detox retreats,” Hamza observes. As a premier airline, Manta Air is positioning itself to adapt to this dynamic environment by focusing on customer experience and offering exclusive, sustainable travel options such as seaplanes and private island retreats.
Reflecting on his career, Hamza expresses immense pride in receiving the prestigious Aviator of the Year title at Hotelier Maldives Awards 2024. “I believe I have gained enough experience in the aviation and hospitality industry to recognise the importance of customer care and their expectations. It gives me great pleasure to receive such an award,” he says. Hamza acknowledges the support of his family, friends, and colleagues, expressing gratitude to Hotelier Maldives for recognising the crucial role that aviators play in the hospitality industry.
As the aviation industry in the Maldives continues to grow, Hamza is helping to guide it into a new era of innovation and excellence. Through safety, customer service, and sustainability, his leadership will leave a lasting mark on both the skies and the islands he calls home.
MALDIVES OCEAN PLASTICS ALLIANCE:
Transforming ocean plastics into opportunities
for cleaner future
The Maldives, with its picturesque atolls and turquoise waters, is a sought-after destination for travellers. Beneath this natural beauty, however, lies a growing challenge: the fight against ocean plastics. To address this issue, the Maldives Ocean Plastics Alliance (MOPA) has emerged as a leading national NGO focused on reducing, recovering, reusing, repurposing, and recycling ocean plastics in the Maldives. For travellers arriving via Manta Air, there are opportunities to contribute to this important cause.
MOPA was established in 2020, aiming to combat the plastic pollution that threatens the Maldives’ environment and marine life. It is the first and only locally registered non-governmental initiative in the Maldives dedicated to forming strong partnerships with stakeholders, ranging from local communities to international organisations. MOPA’s vision aligns with the national government’s commitment to addressing ocean plastics through legislative action and participation in global initiatives like the movement to ban single-use plastics.
The organisation’s focus is not just on policy, but also on tangible, community-based projects that directly address the issue of plastic pollution. MOPA engages with a variety of stakeholders, including manufacturers, importers, retailers, and consumers,
to create sustainable solutions for reducing plastic waste. Through these efforts, MOPA aims to ensure that the Maldives remains a safe haven for marine life and a pristine destination for tourists.
MOPA’s projects span different areas, from education to hands-on waste management, with a primary goal of creating a sustainable environment. Some of the key projects include:
1. PET Collection Initiatives
One of MOPA’s flagship initiatives is the collection and recycling of PET (polyethylene terephthalate) plastics, commonly used in bottles. The organisation has established collection points across several islands and resorts, encouraging both locals and tourists to deposit their used plastic bottles. These PET bottles are then processed and sent for recycling, reducing the volume of waste that ends up in the ocean.
The Coca-Cola Foundation, in collaboration with MOPA and Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO), has also launched a major plastic recycling initiative in the Maldives. Marking World Cleanup Day 2024, the project exports baled post-consumer PET plastic for recycling in Malaysia and China, enhancing efficiency in storage and transport. It aims to establish infrastructure and systems for nationwide
PET collection, moving away from incineration on Thilafushi Island. The initiative also includes community education, setting the groundwork for sustainable waste management practices.
MOPA’s PET collection initiative is crucial because plastic bottles are among the most common forms of waste found in the Maldives. By offering a straightforward way for tourists to contribute, MOPA makes it easy for travellers to play a part in reducing plastic pollution during their stay.
2. Community-Based Recycling Programmes
MOPA has implemented community-based recycling programmes across various atolls, encouraging local populations to take part in reducing waste. These programmes involve training sessions for community members on proper waste segregation and the benefits of recycling. They aim to instil a culture of recycling within local communities, ensuring that plastic waste is properly managed before it can reach the ocean.
These programmes are supported by MOPA’s collaboration with local councils and community leaders, ensuring that each island has the resources and knowledge required to carry out effective recycling practices. Tourists can engage in these efforts by participating in clean-up activities or by visiting local recycling centres during their island visits.
3. Corporate Social Responsibility Partnerships
MOPA has also formed partnerships with businesses,
including resorts and retailers, to promote sustainable practices. Many resorts in the Maldives have joined MOPA’s efforts, incorporating PET collection bins and waste segregation systems into their operations. By working closely with the hospitality industry, MOPA ensures that waste management practices align with the needs of tourists while helping to preserve the environment.
These partnerships have enabled MOPA to expand the reach of its initiatives, as resorts and businesses play a significant role in educating visitors about responsible waste disposal. As a traveller, staying at a resort that collaborates with MOPA provides an opportunity to contribute directly to the organisation’s recycling efforts during a stay.
4. Educational Campaigns and Awareness Drives
Education is central to MOPA’s strategy. The organisation conducts workshops, seminars, and awareness campaigns to educate both residents and tourists about the impact of plastic waste on the marine ecosystem. These campaigns often include demonstrations of recycling processes, community beach cleanups, and talks on sustainable tourism practices.
For travellers, MOPA’s awareness programmes provide an educational experience that complements their visit to the Maldives. By learning more about the challenges of ocean plastics and participating in clean-up events, tourists can leave with a deeper understanding of the need for sustainable practices.
Tourists visiting the Maldives can support MOPA’s initiatives in several practical ways, contributing to the preservation of the region’s natural beauty:
1. Participating in PET Collection Programmes
Many resorts and inhabited islands that are part of MOPA’s network have PET collection points where visitors can drop off used plastic bottles. Travellers can inquire at their accommodation about how to dispose of plastics correctly. By taking part in this simple act, tourists can help ensure that plastics are recycled rather than polluting the ocean.
2. Supporting Resorts with Sustainable Practices
When booking a stay in the Maldives, travellers can choose resorts that are actively participating in MOPA’s initiatives. These resorts often have practices in place for reducing single-use plastics and promoting recycling. By supporting businesses that share a commitment to sustainability, tourists can indirectly contribute to MOPA’s mission.
Additionally, many resorts have activities that focus on environmental conservation, such as guided tours of local recycling centres or snorkelling trips with marine biologists who explain the impact of plastic waste on coral reefs. These experiences allow guests to understand how their actions contribute to the health of the ocean.
3. Joining Beach Clean-Up Activities
MOPA regularly organises beach clean-up events in collaboration with resorts, local councils, and community groups. These clean-ups are designed to remove plastic waste from beaches before it can be carried into the ocean. Tourists can join these
events, which are often open to the public and advertised through resorts and community centres.
Beach clean-ups provide a unique way to connect with local communities and fellow travellers while making a tangible impact on the environment. It’s also an opportunity for tourists to see firsthand the importance of waste management and the efforts being made to keep the Maldives’ coastlines clean.
4. Reducing Personal Plastic Consumption
Beyond participating in MOPA’s initiatives, travellers can take simple steps to reduce their own plastic footprint. This includes carrying a reusable water bottle, using reusable shopping bags, and saying no to plastic straws and cutlery. By reducing the demand for singleuse plastics, tourists can help create a ripple effect that supports MOPA’s long-term goals.
MOPA’s initiatives have already made a measurable impact in the fight against ocean plastics in the Maldives. By working closely with government bodies, businesses, and local communities, the organisation has created a framework for sustainable waste management that can be expanded over time. The organisation’s partnerships with the hospitality sector have been particularly effective in bridging the gap between environmental goals and the tourism industry’s needs.
Supporting MOPA’s initiatives can be a meaningful way to give back to the Maldives. By engaging with local recycling efforts and choosing sustainable practices during their visit, travellers can help ensure that the Maldives remains a beautiful destination for future generations. From small actions like recycling a bottle to participating in a beach clean-up, each contribution helps protect the delicate balance of the Maldives’ ecosystems.

COCONUT WATER:
Natural Hydrator with Versatile Uses
While the coconut’s flesh and shell have been used for various purposes, it is the coconut water that has recently attracted the interest of health enthusiasts and culinary experts.
Coconut water, the clear liquid inside the coconut, is a natural isotonic beverage, closely matching the electrolyte balance of human blood. This quality has earned it the moniker “fluid of life.” Rich in natural sugars, salts, and vitamins, it offers a refreshing and hydrating option.
In the Maldives, coconut water is a common beverage, enjoyed either fresh or in packaged form. Its subtle flavour and ability to quench thirst make it a preferred choice. However, it is best consumed quickly after opening, as air exposure can lead to fermentation and reduced nutritional value.
Compared to beverages like whole milk and orange juice, coconut water is low in fat, free of cholesterol, and high in potassium and antioxidants. It also contains lauric acid, a component found in breast milk, making it a natural milk substitute for some.
Beyond hydration, coconut water has potential health benefits. Studies indicate it contains more potassium than many energy drinks, making it effective for replenishing electrolytes. Its use during wartime as a substitute for intravenous solutions has reinforced its reputation as a “universal donor.”
Coconut water is also recognized for other health applications. It may provide short-term relief from hangovers, support kidney health through its diuretic properties, and improve skin health. Its role in weight management and skincare has made it popular among wellness enthusiasts.
Coconut’s many uses include:
Food: The white flesh of the coconut, or copra, is a key ingredient in Maldivian cuisine. It is used in coconut milk, curries, and desserts. Grated coconut, known as kaashi huni, features in traditional treats like boakibaa, gulha, and bendi. Coconut palms also offer toddy, a traditional beverage tapped from the sap of the palm. Toddy is often enjoyed
as a drink on its own and plays a key role in local culinary practices. One such use is in making a traditional vinaigrette base, which is used to pickle items like Asaara, a popular Maldivian delicacy.
Building Materials: Coconut palm wood is used for construction, including houses and boats. Palm leaves are used to create thatched roofs and baskets.
Household Items: Coconut shells are repurposed as bowls, utensils, and decorative objects, while coconut husk fibres are made into brooms and mats.
Traditional Medicine: Coconut oil, extracted from copra, has long been used as a remedy in the Maldives, valued for its benefits for skin, hair, and general well-being.
Copra Production: The Maldives has a history of copra production, a onceimportant source of income. Dried coconut meat is used for extracting coconut oil.
The coconut palm represents Maldivian culture and identity. Its ability to thrive and support the community has cemented its role in local heritage. From hydrating coconut water to versatile coconut meat, this natural resource continues to be integral to the lives of Maldivians and visitors.
On your visit to the Maldives, the sight of coconut palms swaying in the breeze serves as a reminder of the island’s natural abundance. Savour the taste of coconut water and experience its revitalising effects—a true reflection of the islands’ enduring connection to nature.
SEAMLESS TRAVEL EXPERIENCE:
Inside Manta Air’s premier lounges
Manta Air, known for its commitment to reliable and premium air services, has set a high standard in customer experience from the moment guests step into their lounges at Velana International Airport (VIA).
Operating from the Noovilu Seaplane Terminal, Manta Air offers two lounges: the Sapphire Lounge and the Comfort Lounge. Each lounge is tailored to provide an enriching predeparture experience for travelers headed to various luxury resorts across the Maldives.
Manta Air launched its lounge services in November 2019, initially operating one lounge known as the Sapphire Lounge. With a growing customer base and the increasing popularity of seaplane transfers, the airline expanded its offerings by opening a second lounge in 2020. In March 2023, both lounges were moved to the Noovilu Seaplane Terminal, where Manta Air currently operates two distinct spaces: the Sapphire Lounge, catering to first-class travelers, and the Comfort Lounge, catering to business-class travelers. Both lounges are designed with the convenience and comfort of guests in mind, offering facilities that cater to the varying needs of passengers.
Sapphire Lounge: First-Class Comfort
Located on the third floor of the Noovilu Seaplane Terminal, the Sapphire Lounge is Manta Air’s firstclass lounge. It is designed for travelers seeking a premium experience in line with the luxurious standards of Maldivian resorts. The lounge spans a total of 497 square meters, accommodating up to 98 guests, with 66 indoor and 32 outdoor seats. The indoor area offers spacious and comfortable seating arrangements, while the outdoor area provides views of seaplanes landing and taking off from the terminal.
One of the notable aspects of the Sapphire Lounge is the accessibility to modern amenities. Strategically placed charging stations are available throughout the lounge, allowing guests to conveniently charge their devices while waiting. The lounge is also equipped with shower facilities, which are especially useful for guests waiting for late-night international flights after their seaplane transfers. The provision of these facilities ensures that travelers can refresh themselves before embarking on their next journey.
The Sapphire Lounge offers a variety of food options, including breakfast and light snacks served throughout the day. These are available for guests to enjoy at their leisure while they wait. Families with young children are accommodated with a dedicated Kids Room, designed with ample entertainment options. This space includes a playhouse, a slide, and a collection of books and toys. A Mothers’ Room is also available, providing a private and comfortable
space for mothers traveling with infants.
Comfort Lounge: Business-Class Ease
The Comfort Lounge, also located on the third floor of the Noovilu Seaplane Terminal, offers a similar set of amenities with some differences in capacity and layout. This lounge is intended for business-class travelers who value a relaxing and convenient environment while awaiting their seaplane transfers. With a total area of 545 square meters, the Comfort Lounge can accommodate up to 104 guests, featuring 92 indoor seats and an additional 12 outdoor seats.
The outdoor area of the Comfort Lounge provides a view of the main international runway at Velana International Airport. This location allows guests to experience close-up views of international flights landing and taking off, adding a dynamic visual element to their wait. As with the Sapphire Lounge, the Comfort Lounge is equipped with easy-toaccess charging locations, ensuring that travelers have the means to stay connected and productive.
Facilities in the Comfort Lounge include shower facilities, a modern Kids Room, and a Mothers’ Room. The Kids Room offers similar amenities to the one in the Sapphire Lounge, with a playhouse, a slide, and an assortment of books and toys to keep children entertained. This thoughtful addition caters to families traveling with young children, allowing them to relax in a comfortable environment.
Shared Features and Services
While the Sapphire and Comfort Lounges are distinct in their capacity and ambiance, both offer several key features that contribute to a seamless travel experience. Guests in both lounges are provided with breakfast and light snacks throughout the day, catering to different preferences and dietary requirements. The lounges aim to provide a stress-free environment where guests can relax and recharge before their onward journey.
Both lounges prioritize cleanliness and guest comfort. Toilet and shower facilities are maintained to a high standard, catering to travelers who may have long wait times before or after their
seaplane transfers. The availability of showers in both lounges is particularly convenient for guests who are connecting to late-night international flights, ensuring they have the opportunity to freshen up before their onward journey.
For families, the presence of dedicated Kids Rooms in both lounges is a welcome feature. These rooms are thoughtfully equipped with playhouses, slides, and a range of books and toys, providing children with a fun and engaging space while their parents relax. The inclusion of Mothers’ Rooms in both lounges further demonstrates Manta Air’s commitment to accommodating the diverse needs of travelers.
Experience at Noovilu Seaplane Terminal
The Noovilu Seaplane Terminal itself plays a significant role in enhancing the lounge experience.
Each lounge is thoughtfully designed to cater to the needs of different travelers, from families with young children to guests seeking a premium pre-departure experience.
Located at Velana International Airport, the terminal is designed to handle the growing number of travelers choosing seaplane transfers to their resorts. By situating its lounges at the Noovilu Seaplane Terminal, Manta Air is able to offer guests an ideal vantage point to observe seaplane operations while enjoying a comfortable waiting experience.
The views from the lounges are among the most memorable features. Guests can watch seaplanes landing and taking off from the docks, creating a unique sense of anticipation as they await their own departures. The opportunity to witness this activity adds a distinctive element to the lounge experience, especially for first-time visitors to the Maldives.
Manta Air’s Sapphire and Comfort Lounges offer travelers a well-rounded experience while waiting for their seaplane transfers. Each lounge
is thoughtfully designed to cater to the needs of different travelers, from families with young children to guests seeking a premium pre-departure experience. With spacious seating, accessible charging points, and essential facilities like showers and private rooms for mothers, both lounges prioritize guest comfort and convenience.
The lounges at the Noovilu Seaplane Terminal serve as a prelude to the luxurious experiences that travelers will encounter at their chosen Maldivian resorts. Manta Air’s commitment to delivering reliable and hospitable service is evident in every detail of its lounge operations, making the waiting experience an integral part of the overall journey. FLYING AFTER SCUBA DIVING:
Essential guidelines for safe travel
Scuba diving in the Maldives offers an unparalleled experience, with its vibrant coral reefs, diverse marine life, and crystal-clear waters. However, one crucial aspect that divers must consider is the timing of their flights after diving. Understanding the recommended waiting periods before flying is essential to ensure safety and prevent decompression sickness. Here’s what you need to know.
Understanding Decompression Sickness
Decompression sickness, also known as “the bends,” occurs when nitrogen bubbles form in the bloodstream and tissues due to rapid changes in pressure. This can happen if a diver ascends too quickly or flies too soon
after diving. The reduced cabin pressure in an airplane can exacerbate the formation of these bubbles, leading to serious health risks.
Recommended Waiting Times
The waiting time before flying after scuba diving depends on the type and number of dives completed. Here are the general guidelines:
1. Single Dive: If you have completed a single, no-decompression dive, it is recommended to wait at least 12 hours before flying. This allows sufficient time for the body to eliminate excess nitrogen.
2. Multiple Dives or Multiple Days of Diving: For divers who have completed multiple dives or have been diving over several days, the recommended waiting period extends to 18 to 24 hours. This longer duration helps ensure that nitrogen levels in the body have decreased to safe levels.
3. Dives Requiring Decompression Stops: If your dive profile included decompression stops, it is crucial to wait at least 24 to 48 hours before boarding a flight. Decompression dives involve higher nitrogen absorption, necessitating a longer off-gassing period.
Seaplane and Domestic Flights
Many tourists visiting resorts and other islands in the Maldives travel by seaplane or domestic flights. While these flights generally operate at lower altitudes compared to international flights, the same waiting time guidelines apply. The reason is that even at lower altitudes, the risk of decompression sickness remains significant due to the changes in pressure.
Practical Tips for Divers
Plan Your Dives and Flights: When planning your diving trip, consider your flight schedule. Ensure that
you have ample time between your last dive and your flight to adhere to the recommended waiting periods.
Stay Hydrated: Proper hydration can aid in the elimination of nitrogen from the body. Drink plenty of water before and after your dives.
Monitor Your Health: Pay attention to any symptoms of decompression sickness, such as joint pain, dizziness, or difficulty breathing. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.
Use Dive Computers: Modern dive computers can help track your nitrogen levels and provide personalized recommendations for safe flying times based on your dive profile.
Flying after scuba diving requires careful consideration and adherence to safety guidelines to prevent decompression sickness. By following the recommended waiting times and taking necessary precautions, divers can enjoy their underwater adventures in the Maldives and travel safely. Always consult with dive professionals or medical experts if you have any concerns about your health and safety.
TRADITION OF EVENING TEA IN MALDIVES
Caron Rohsler arrived in 2019 as the British High Commissioner to the Maldives, entering a new environment far from home. Despite the differences, she quickly found common ground, particularly in the tradition of evening tea, which resonated with her British roots.
Before her departure for the Maldives, Caron visited the Maldivian High Commission in the UK, where she was introduced to this cultural practice. However, it was only after settling into Malé and attending numerous tea gatherings that she fully appreciated the role of evening tea in Maldivian life.
“As a Brit, one of the customs I can connect with deeply is evening tea,” Caron shared on Instagram shortly after her arrival. “When I was tired in the afternoon, enjoying local seafood and sweet treats brought a sense of comfort.”
The British are known worldwide for their evening tea tradition, a practice that spread to many countries during colonial times. Even Nelson Mandela famously remarked that evening tea was the best thing the British brought to South Africa. The Maldives, like other countries, has embraced this practice, but it has become a part of everyday life rather than just a special occasion. Many Maldivians consider a cup of black tea essential to unwind after a day’s work or to gather with family and friends.
A notable difference between British and Maldivian tea customs is the food served. British tea is often accompanied by delicate sandwiches and pastries, while the Maldivian tea table is rich with fried and sweet snacks, known locally as Hedhikaa. Caron developed a taste for these local delicacies, saying, “I really enjoy the flavours of Dhivehi Hedhikaa—they pair perfectly with black tea.”
Some traditional Maldivian snacks have origins abroad but have evolved into local favourites. For instance, Bajiya is an adaptation of the Indian samosa, featuring a filling seasoned with onions and a hint of sweetness. The dish gained favour among many, including former President Ibrahim Nasir, who once suggested adding butter to enhance its flavour. Renowned establishments
like Husnooge in Male’ continue to prepare Bajiya using recipes passed down through generations.
The evening tea tradition in the Maldives has evolved alongside the growth of the hospitality industry. What began as a simple custom involving homemade snacks, bread, or bananas took on new dimensions with the rise of cafes in the late 20th century. Venues like Orchid Ufa Hotel, Evening Glory, and Dhanbuma Cafe brought a more sophisticated tea experience to the capital city, making it a popular choice for social gatherings.
Cafes have long been a fixture in Malé, but modern tea houses now cater to both locals and tourists seeking a taste of authentic Maldivian culture. Even high-end restaurants have embraced tea menus, turning the simple tradition into an immersive cultural experience.
Reflecting on her time in the Maldives, Caron shared that some of her fondest memories are connected to these tea gatherings, including the “quarantine tea” that provided a comforting routine during the pandemic lockdowns. “It was sent in cups from one floor of the house to the next. Fish bread and Bajiya were my favourite snacks,” she recalled.
The true charm of evening tea lies not just in the taste of the food or the warmth of the cup, but in the connections it fosters. It is a daily practice that brings people together, encouraging conversation and creating a sense of community. As Caron prepares to return to the UK, she will carry with him memories of the rich tradition of evening tea in the Maldives—one that has seamlessly blended local flavour with shared experiences.
Evening tea is more than a meal; it is a timehonoured custom that reflects the unique cultural blend of the Maldives, offering a warm welcome to visitors and a comforting routine for residents. Through this simple ritual, the Maldives has crafted its own interpretation of a global tradition, making it a cherished part of everyday life.
