MOTOR MOUTH

EYES ON THE PRIZED

I

just got back from a show that I wholeheartedly attend every year. It’s a no-miss extravaganza of killer and cool creations known as the Mooneyes Hot Rod Custom Show in Yokohama, Japan. And I personally think it just may be the best motorcycle show in the whole wide world. This year the Mooneyes HRCS celebrated its 25th year, making it the mainstay of custom bike and car shows in the Far East. When I first attended this show in 1999 the Mooneyes HRCS was a much smaller show, as you can imagine. It filled half of the Pacifico Yokohama than it does now. There were also more cars than custom choppers making the scene as well, but all that has changed. This show has grown leaps and bounds over past years, and it has taken over the whole convention center hall and then some. There are far more bikes than cars being shown than in prior years, and this is of course all right by me. The HRCS used to be a Japan-only affair, but this show has also seen much visitor growth with Europeans and Australians showing up in considerably larger numbers than ever before. And then there are us Americans who have been flocking to this event as something big to check of their biker bucket list in larger numbers year over year. Since its inception, the Mooneyes show has mainly been focused on inviting car and bike builders, lowbrow artists, and custom painters from the USA to show their wheeled and non-wheeled works of art to the Japanese public. Almost everyone who has been at the top of the two-wheeled customizing game in the past 25 years has

hopped a flight over the Pacific Ocean to meet and greet massive crowds of eager Asians who are down with who these people are and what they do. This year the bikes that were shown were a massive amount of eclectic machines with everything from prewar original-paint Knuckleheads to brand-new blown-apart and majorly customized Dyna Lowriders with added amounts of fabrication. There were more than 800 bikes on display, and every style of custom bike was represented. Yes, there were even a ton of V-Rods and K models being exhibited but also early ’50s and ’60s Kawasakis and Suzukis alongside big-wheel baggers and full-blown race-ready Honda Cub 50s. The best part about the style of these bikes in Japan is that they work with what parts they have but in a very intrinsic smartness with much meticulousness and attention

“IT STRIKES ME AS FUNNY THAT MANY OF THE SAME RED-BLOODED AMERICAN BUILDERS FALL IN LOVE WITH USA-MADE BIKES BEING BUILT IN THE JAPANESE WAY, MAKING IT ALL SORT OF COME FULL CIRCLE.” 8 / HOTBIKE.COM

to detail. Every component used seems to be obsessed upon, and the fit and finish usually has an insane attention to the bike’s age and from what continent it was originally built on. This way of thinking makes many of these bikes an inspiration for the American builders and fabricators who visit Asia or read the Japanese bike magazines. It strikes me as funny that many of the same redblooded American builders fall in love with USA-made bikes being built in the Japanese way, making it all sort of come full circle. And that is what truly makes the Mooneyes Yokohama HRCS such a worldwide affair. I hope to see you there next year getting your mind blown!

EDITOR’S NOTE

HIT ’EM WITH

THE HINE! T he world of media has undergone a major transformation as of late. Aside from putting out this magazine you’re holding, I manage several accounts for work and personal, which means I’m online all day, every day. The previous world of simply sharing photos with family and friends on the line has long been surpassed in ways never imaginable. Anytime anything is posted, it’s visible to the world immediately with little to no chance of retraction. Having a well-managed online persona is the new webpage, résumé, and brand management and is often accessed more than any other source among most of today’s public. It’s become such an important part of either a person’s or company’s brand that the platforms have made ways to separate a post intended to be fun that expire or disappear after viewing and more permanent post that are meant to showcase a long-term image. But never forget that anything put online will never truly disappear for just as soon as apps make it possible for post to vanish—surely someone has created a app to record it. Today there is also a whole new source of social-media employment opportunities for individuals as influencers, brand ambassadors, and online personalities. There are entire companies that have started in the past few years that cater exclusively to the online crowd with a combination of lifestyle mixed with marketplace. Win a race, post a pic, sell a shirt. Easy to say. Not easy to do. There are even a few people who make a career out of reposting other people’s work and creativity. As a photographer, there is nothing more frustrating than to see your work showcased on someone else’s page with no credit or mention of where it came from. With the barriers to enter nothing more than a valid email account and a smartphone, only time will tell what will happen to the content creators versus the ones who merely repost or copy/paste and create a trending amusing post. Stealing content is easy. Creating content is not. Creating unique, quality

10 / HOTBIKE.COM

content over a long period of time while paying the bills is almost impossible. Almost. This explains why you run into the same people all over the world time and time again. I’ve always said if I could pay rent with free black T-shirts, I’d be a millionaire. It’s the advertisers and readers who allow the unique content creation a possibility. Event coverage has drastically changed. No longer is it necessary to wait months for an article with a few highlight photos. Even taking the time to download photos and videos, edit them, and then post them later is virtually pointless. Today, creating online content from the event is crucial. The latest trend is going LIVE onsite

“THIS YEAR HOT BIKE WILL NOT ONLY SURVIVE BUT DOMINATE THE V-TWIN MEDIA AS WE CREATE NEW WAYS TO PROVIDE THE VERY BEST V-TWIN CONTENT ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD, PERIOD. DROP MIC.” where followers and fans can tune in and comment from an unedited video stream as it’s happening. The internet has also created a new community of peers who have never met before except through a series of likes and comments. I can’t help to keep referencing a quote from famed builder Trevelen Rabanal from an interview I did where he stated, “Back in the day you had to experience it to understand it. Today you just Google it and something will come up.” Now, if you’re into hood shit, you no longer have to go the hood to see said shit. Simply, follow @hood_shit and see pics and photos of places you might never set foot in. Conversely, it is possible to see the world through eyes of the rich and famous and virtually experience the luxury that was historically only accessible

on TV programs and magazines. But what Trevelen was saying was, you will never truly understand it unless you live it. Attending one event does not constitute living, just as one trip to the gym doesn’t make you a health expert. So how does a brand like Hot Bike lead the way in today’s marketplace? The jobs Jeff, Ed, Robert, and I have are to live, breathe, and experience the V-twin life and share our experience across all platforms digital and traditional. None of us are experts in all aspects of the culture by any means. Each of us takes our own interest and explores them on a daily basis both in person and online. We each play a role that is unique to Hot Bike, and it’s our job and responsibility to the readers and viewers to give a valid, educated opinion that wasn’t formed overnight or based on chasing likes and comments. Most of the time when something is finally considered “cool” we are already over it and looking for the inevitable next trend. We would hope as an advertiser and reader that value is placed on the experience of old-world print, combined with full emersion into the new digital age. The latest cool-guy pages might give you a shout-out on IG but can never suggest improvements from years of experience of working with good and bad examples while giving you a shout-out in print and on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Tumblr, MySpace, Match, Tinder, and Christian Mingle (JK). Love us, hate us, envy us, or join us. This year Hot Bike will not only survive but dominate the V-twin media as we create new ways to provide the very best V-twin content anywhere in the world, period. Drop mic. HB JOHN ZAMORA EDITOR

DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN THREE WORDS. Crazy, creative, fun. Is this Tinder? Should I have said sexy? WHAT DO YOU RIDE? A 1992 Harley-Davidson FXRS-SP. WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST BIKE? A Honda CRF-50 I’m sure, but more relatable, a Harley-Davidson Sportster 883. WHAT IS YOUR ALL-TIME FAVORITE BIKE? Harley-Davidson XR750. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO WORK IN THE MOTORCYCLE INDUSTRY? I was ready to pursue a career path and wanted something fun. I’ve always said I could be selling women’s shampoo or widgets, but I got lucky. WHAT DO YOU THINK THE FUTURE OF THE MOTORCYCLE INDUSTRY IS? Function over form will always win. Nowadays with high performance being the new black, I’d say we’ll see more purposeful parts lines emerging from both new and established brands.

22 / HOTBIKE.COM

“MOTORCYCLE RIDES HELP MY INSPIRATION FLOW, BUT PROJECTS DRIPPING WITH PASSION TEND TO REALLY INSPIRE ME.” WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST LIFE ACHIEVEMENT SO FAR? Besides my beautiful daughter Bowie Rae, I would say my career in the motorcycle industry. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST REGRET TO DATE? Not keeping in touch with some close friends over the years. Life is too short for that shit! WHAT INSPIRES YOU? Motorcycle rides help my inspiration flow, but projects dripping with passion tend to really inspire me. It’s a joke but I have a photo of a monster-wheeled Sportster in my office for inspiration. I like to think how many people told that guy, “You can’t do that,” or, “That will never work.” Even though I would never do something like that, it still helps inspire. ANY LAST WORDS? “If you don’t love what you are doing you are wasting your time.” —Jim Hogg HB

MR. THREE-PEAT JOHN SHOPE’S THIRD STRIKE WORDS: MARK MASKER PHOTOS: PAUL MORTON

24 / HOTBIKE.COM

I

don’t care who you are—threepeating anything is a bitch. Repeated success is a two-faced giant that loves you with one glance and wants to kill you with the other. John Shope knows a thing or two about that monster, seeing as how his bikes have been the people’s choice for the best on the Hot Bike Tour three years running. The bright side is all the recognition that comes with being a dynasty. Men want to be you and women want to be with you. People love your parts and (hopefully) shell out cash to get them for their own bikes. All that love inspires you to keep going for next year.

So far so good, right? The ugly face is the pressure. Can I do it again? What should I do next time? Do I go with what worked or go the opposite direction for the surprise factor? Every competitor faces these questions, whether it’s in poker tournaments, bike shows, or planning a team strategy for the NFL. For the first two years, John gave us two killer baggers. What was the game plan for the three-peat? This time, John pulled a bootleg turn from bagger building to creating an engraved Softail. A green one at that. “I won twice in a row but wanted to go over to the cool side, and we made a

parts line from that bike,” he tells us. “I got to do something different and show off these new parts. I came from Softails and choppers, and it was refreshing to go back. I got a nasty Fatboy coming out soon too.” The big question we have for John: Why do you suppose you’ve won three years going? “Dude, I’ll say it,” he answers. “It doesn’t mean I’m the best. It’s a people’s choice show. If you can deliver something that everyone likes and capture their votes, that’s how you win a people’s choice show. The looks factors on these three bikes are out of control.”

MARCH 2017 / 25

FOREFRONT | 2012 SOFTAIL In talking with John about this bike and the industry in general, we got to speculating about the future. Where’s the public eye going to look once Dynas and FXRs top out in popularity? The big-wheel bagger fad has waned into a shadow of its former glory. These are the reasons John went with a Softail for his GEICO Hot Bike Tour entry. Whenever consumers gobble up the cheap bikes, prices skyrocket as supply falls short. Meanwhile, whatever isn’t selling gets cheaper and cheaper until the seesaw tips back in the other direction. If that playground comparison holds true again, John could be right. HB

“IT DOESN’T MEAN I’M THE BEST. IT’S A PEOPLE’S CHOICE SHOW. IF YOU CAN DELIVER SOMETHING THAT EVERYONE LIKES AND CAPTURE THEIR VOTES, THAT’S HOW YOU WIN.”

T

he guys from Prism Supply have been on a run as of late. It seems as if every bike that has come out of their small-butwell-equipped shop in North Carolina has received multiple accolades. I met up with Zach Hindes, one of the guys behind Prism Supply, and wanted to know more about this bike. Here’s what he had to say. “When I built this bike, it was my first and only Big Twin Harley-Davidson at the time, so I wanted to build something that could actually be ridden on the streets and be commuted on when I felt like it. “I bought the 1968 generator shovel engine from another friend by the name of Ramsey, and my brother Jake scored the transmission, wheels, and frame out

of a local storage unit that was up for auction. “This bike was built to be a timeless traditional chopper, which is why we decided to use an original 1948 Panhead frame and springer front end. We wanted to add some custom touches to it but still stay true to the traditional HarleyDavidson style. That is why we made the narrow split tanks and narrowed up an original Panhead rear fender. “We then fabricated the stainless-steel handlebars and welded them up to an old springer top clamp. The stainless-steel sissy bar design just kind of came to us after the bike was getting mocked up. Once the sissy bar was hung we decided to weld two Prism Supply “Ripple” taillights to it for legal reasons. When the

motor and tranny were mated to the frame we rounded out the stainless-steel extravaganza with the fabrication of the exhaust. Yes, this is a set of custom pipes, but we tried very hard to maintain a more “traditional” style. “We bead blasted the finished stainless-steel parts and left raw to give it more of a cast look. The bike was finally mocked up and to our liking. We then of course tore it down and the frame and tins were painted 1936 Ford Motor Company ‘Washington Blue’ by my good buddy Justin, a.k.a. Spook. The finished bike turned out better than we had planned for a bike we built in our free time. It only really took us just a few months, and I’m extremely happy with the final outcome.” HB

“THIS BIKE WAS BUILT TO BE A TIMELESS TRADITIONAL CHOPPER, WHICH IS WHY WE DECIDED TO USE AN ORIGINAL 1948 PANHEAD FRAME AND SPRINGER FRONT END.” 32 / HOTBIKE.COM

ust two short years ago my wife and I were on the other side of the tracks. We were those pesky sportbike kids zooming around fast up and down the highway any chance we could get. Yes, she was the faster of the two of us. We have such a love of riding long distance, so we knew that we had to make a change in mode of transportation. WORDS: JOHN ZAMORA PHOTOS: STEVEN SPOONS

Our passion for riding motorcycles took us to different rallies and bike events. One night we decided we wanted to put on our own event. We wanted to be different and bring all worlds of the motorcycle community together. Both young and old, sportbike and cruiser, both stock and custom. This is how Bikes on the Beach Custom Bike Show and Festival was born. As the first truly independent bike show and festival, we hit every event we could to spread the word. In our travels we said we would not only put on one of the best shows in South Florida, but we would also build a bike that could compete. We teamed up with our local shop owner Shane Nardi of Kryptic Concepts and started putting the ideas into action. Not only did we want to build a bad Road King, but we wanted it to stand out.

BAGGED | 2014 ROAD KING South Florida has some very nice builds, but we wanted the showstopper. After throwing ideas to the board, such as the built-in iPad that controls the entire bike, picking out a killer bold 30-inch wheel from Mad Wheels, and grabbing the TOL Designs rear end and custom fabricating a huge killer tank and lay frame, we knew we had something special. We enlisted the help of local painter Tony owner of Beyond Sublime to bring it to life. After we mixed a few colors, the Root Beer flaked and Pearl White hit the spot. The pinstriping and copper spun truly made the lines of the bike come to life and give it a mean yet clean and simple design. My wife just kept going back to the Root Beer and Pearl White and said it reminded her of a Mug root beer bottle. So there it was: She was named Mean Mug. She was mean and sexy and was ready to roll. A CUSTOM DYNA WITH SPORTBIKE DNA

s a kid all I wanted to do was wheelies. Almost 10 years of traveling and performing stunt shows I burned out of the sportbike scene in the late 2000s and transitioned to V-twins. I was always stoked how Jason Pullen rode the Harley and how much fun he had while riding it. I built a couple of purpose-built stunt Sportsters after him but knew that I needed to get back to enjoying riding my bike—something I could still be an asshole on and ride with the homies. Day one of the Hot Bike Tour in 2014 I met Satya Kraus. I couldn’t stop staring at his bike; it was like no other Harley I had ever seen. It incorporated all the rad sportbike components I wanted and had an all-around

sport look to it. Inverted forks and brakes on Sportster stunt bikes wasn’t new, but I had never seen a setup like his. Kraus was very helpful throughout my entire build. I then hopped on the “Trend Train” and decided to build a Dyna. I wanted a purpose-built machine that I could jump curbs, ride wheelies, and rip multi-gear burnouts. I sourced a 2006 FXDL from a barn in the Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, area. When I got back and started to tear it down things didn’t go as hoped. The bike had been in a frontend collision, and the damage was worse than expected. The frame was too twisted to straighten, so I headed to Hal’s Harley-Davidson to purchase a new one. While at Hal’s I dropped the motor off in the Speed Shop. They sent

the flywheel and heads to Revolution Performance to weld and true the crank and give the heads a stage two treatment. The cam chest was upgraded with Feuling camplate, high-capacity oil pump, lifters, and Reaper 574 cams. We also upgraded the cam chain tensioner, and the displacement was bumped up to 97 inches. Two Brothers Racing supplied the soundtrack with a 2-into-1 pipe. Finally, a Dynojet Power Vision managed fuel and maximized power. Kraus trees, Race Tech G6 forks, and G3 rear shocks were built and tuned by Jimmy Wood from Moto Station. C&S Custom built an all-aluminum swingarm to increase the handling of the bike. A set of Ride Wright Chicago Hustler wheels wrapped in Pirelli Night Dragons and

Thrust Sprockets were used for the final drive. Brakes came from Kawasaki ZX10R Radial Calipers front and rear with a Kraus Dual Caliper bracket and HEL Performance brake lines to stop as fast as possible. With this setup we had the perfect balance of power, handling, and braking in one. To save weight we ran a Shorai battery. Hammerhead shifter and brake levers also help save weight and add that custom look. I always loved the original Dyna paint scheme and the 2006 Anniversary Red, White, and Blue. SpeedFreak Motorsports put their spin by adding pearl and increasing the size of the graphics. My good buddy JBseatz made a custom seat that complemented the paint. MARCH 2017 / 43

PERIOD PIECE RARE 1928 JDH-XR RETRO RACER

I

started building this bike from parts for the Born-Free 8 show in Southern California. My goal was to build a dual-carbureted Harley JD at first, but as I discovered more and more rare H-D factory racing parts my vision evolved into building a factory-style 1920s superbike. My friend Stuart from JD Jugs in Australia and I developed the idea to cast a pair of dual-carbureted JD cylinders with intakes similar to the H-D XR750 from the 1970s and were able to use

48 / HOTBIKE.COM

our first prototypes on the JDH-XR. Originally, I had planned to build the engine using a stock road model bottom end, but in March 2016 I located a very rare 1928 H-D JDH two-cam bottom end. This model was only produced in 1928 and 1929 and is a street version of The Motor Company’s two-cam factory race engine. Only 1,000 were produced over the two years and are highly sought after by collectors. I was lucky to make a deal for the engine, and I had the makings of what

would be a rare and unique powerplant for my bike. I hopped up the 74ci engine to 92 inches and added reground racing cams, a factory baby Bosch racing magneto, and a pair of (unobtainable) ’36–’39 Knucklehead M5 Linkert Carburetors. The chassis incorporates late 1920s factory-style hill climb/roadrace castings, which Stuart and I began reproducing in December 2015. The neck is a newly cast replica of the factory drop neck, used on top hill-climb machines of the day. The neck lowers the overall center

of gravity of the bike and has a “fin” for the factory racing style steering dampener. Keystone roadrace engine castings were also specially reproduced for this bike. Keystone frames differ from stock frames in that the engine is mounted into the frame with engine plates, making the engine a stress member of the frame. This also allows the engine to be mounted lower in relation to the axles, providing for a lower center of gravity. The transmission mounting plate is integral with the rear engine mount casting and also allows for a lower trans position. Rather than identically recreating a factory hill climb or roadrace frame, I decided to shorten the wheelbase and lower the seat position, providing for a more streetable chassis. The fork is a 1929, one-year, onemodel-only JDH fork, which has a special forged I-beam construction rear leg. Tanks were hand fabricated by Justin Walls of BTTW, mirroring half-mile racing tanks. Gas is located in the right side tank and oil in the left. The finish of the bike is almost entirely nickel plated in different textures. The frame, fork, bars, wheels, and many other parts are satin nickel, which is a bit more dull finish than the polished nickel on the tanks and fender. The bike is a blast to ride and surprises most with the power it creates. It will cruise at 80 mph and has impressive torque and acceleration. It’s stable at speed and able to spin the wheel easily in first and second gear. The dual carbs dialed right in and provide substantial advantage at high rpm. This build would not have been possible without the help of my friends Ken Curtis, Justin Walls, and Stuart Ritchie. HB

IRONHEAD

CHRIS KYLE TRIBUTE BIKE WORDS: JOHN ZAMORA PHOTOS: SHOOTERS IMAGES

T

he inspiration for this bike originally came from a trip to Red Lodge, Montana, and an infatuation to ride in the Iron Horse Rodeo on the dirt rodeo arena. Living in northern Wyoming, the selection was limited, but in the back of a shed/shop I ran across a 1974 Harley-Davidson Ironhead Sportster. It was stripped of its tin, oil tank, and many other incidental parts. Not exactly a basket case but a rolling (after airing the tires) chassis, with a shopping cart full of parts. The first thing I did was a compression check. To my pleasant surprise, the gauge clocked up 120 pounds compression. I proceeded to makeshift some oil lines and oil tank, added gas to the carb, applied power to the starter solenoid, sparing you the unsundry other coil power hookups, etc. A bit of choke and, boom, it was running. No missing, no blue smoke, just that great Ironhead sound and a sweet, loping, legendary idle.

RIPPER | 1974 IRONHEAD “THE LEAST I COULD DO AS A PERSON WAY OUT HERE IN NORTHERN WYOMING IS TO USE THIS BOBBER BUILD TO HONOR OUR VETERANS AND PAY TRIBUTE TO AN AMERICAN HERO.”

I had a year until the Iron Horse Rodeo, so I continued to ponder it while I finished up a couple of other custom paint jobs. Then the Hot Bike Tour came through Sheridan and I got a good look at some sweet bobbers. I was hooked and knew my ’74 Sporty could be turned to the “Dark Side” and make a great bobber. Now, just like a good paint job, I had to come up with a theme. Most of the riders I knew were veterans. My son did a tour in Iraq with the 1st Calvary, and I had a high draft number in ’71 and just missed Vietnam. Although not a vet myself, I felt this was my direction on this bobber. I was moved by the American Sniper story and went to see the movie. That did it. That would be my theme: Chris Kyle Tribute Bike. The least I could do as a person way out here in Northern Wyoming is to use this bobber build to honor our veterans and

56 / HOTBIKE.COM

pay tribute to an American hero. After I stripped the frame, cut off the rear, and welded on a hardtail kit, I pulled the fork sliders and took them to Big Sky Cycles and had my buddy Jim chuck them up in his lathe and remove all the brake and fender mount projections for a clean look. Various mounts were fabbed and welded on before the frame was powdercoated in the local Vacutech manufacturing facility. They also powdercoated the tank in a really cool hammered copper over black for me. A remote activation was a perfect trick addition to this build. The heart of the rewire is a small remote-start module built into the battery box. It allows remote activation of the LED accent lighting, and with the help of a discreet fabricated neutral safety switch I can remote start it from a quarter mile away. I concealed as much wiring as possible

inside the frame, and all exposed wiring is antique cloth style. In finishing up, I picked up a 30.06 rifle barrel and used it for a suicide shifter. I converted the left-side forward control, shifter lever, and peg to a foot clutch. I then applied a copper leaf Punisher skull to the sides of the gas tank, airbrushed some details, red eyes, shading, and then clear-coated the whole thing. I put the Chris Kyle badges on the ends of the oil tank as well. Norbrook Plating out of Warren, Michigan, did the copper plating and polishing with clear coat by Jack’s Body Shop here in Sheridan. Thanks to an inspiration modification, caused by an awesome Hot Bike Tour, in my hometown this build has become larger than life in the form of an inspiration of recognition for all veterans and Chris Kyle’s service to us all! I guess my Iron Horse Rodeo ride will have to wait. HB

HEAVY METAL

FROM SOLO TO JOE ASTURI UPGRADES HIS CUSTOM KING TO A GREAT GLIDE

WORDS AND PHOTOS: JOHN ZAMORA MODEL: ELIZABETH VELASQUEZ

W

hat defines what a lowrider bike should be? While we’d like to think that we at Hot Bike are the only keepers of the good book, nothing could be further from the truth. Although some may disagree, a lowrider motorcycle doesn’t have to have spoke wheels to fit in with the cruising crowd. It’s more about a stance, attitude, and overall presence that separates a typical custom from the street’s low scene. This isn’t the first swing at the bat on a custom bagger for bike owner Joe Asturi. He’s owned a custom 30-inch equipped Road King that made its way across the show circuit in the last few years. Joe explains: “The Road Glide was bought to have as a daily rider since I already had a 30-inch Road King that was a solo rider that the wife was not having any longer. I decided that I enjoyed riding the Glide more than the Road King, so I eventually sold it.”

MARCH 2017 / 61

HEAVY METAL | 2015 ROAD GLIDE “I TOOK THE BIKE OUT A FEW TIMES AND NOW HAVE DECIDED TO TAKE IT TO ANOTHER LEVEL.”

FOR MORE ON THIS BIKE VISIT HOTBIKE.COM

There are two types of people in this world: ones who can leave things stock and ones who can’t no matter what time or expense involved. “I decided to take this Road Glide to the next level for comfort with the ability to go anywhere in style,” Joe says. “I started with the guys at TOL Designs in Henderson, Nevada, to pick out the rear tailsection along with the tank covers. Then I met with the ‘Mad Man’ Doug Magoon at Mad Wheels and decided to go with a 23-inch Inflictor with a matching rear 16-inch wheel.” At the base of any great custom has to be the paint. Often imitated and usually horribly duplicated, the lowrider paint job isn’t something that can be Xeroxed off an Instagram post or copied from a picture found online. There is definitely a right way and a wrong way to make patterns ebb and flow and make overall sense across the entire surface. One such painter who possesses that skill set from decades of practice is Danny D. Galvez, a.k.a. El Jefe. “I went to Danny D. for the paintwork, as he has done other work for me in the past, and the work has always been just plain

62 / HOTBIKE.COM

sick,” Joe says. “The funny part of the paint is it only took about 30 minutes to come up with all the patterns and colors that we wanted to use.” The result that transpired is that little sumpin’ sumpin’ that makes a good bike achieve greatness. Since the shoot the bike has been making the rounds, including a rather impressive showing at the worldfamous 2016 SEMA show in Las Vegas. Of course all the attention relit the finished fire under Joe’s butt once again. “I took the bike out a few times and now have decided to take it to another level,” he says. “So it is going under the knife for a 30-inch Mad Asturi wheel.” HB

TWO’S ALWAYS BETTER THAN ONE…

FIRST-GEN 39mm DUAL-DISC UPGRADE

64 / HOTBIKE.COM

hey say approximately 70 percent of a motorcycle’s stopping power comes from the front brake system. Well, maybe “they” must not have tested many early single-disc FXRs and Dynas. That, or riders like myself, who for whatever hapless reasons, came to rely solely on rear brakes (because that’s all most of my first bikes had), and the older H-D front discs seemed better suited for inclined traffic stops anyway, not hard panic braking, let alone constant use. (Even to this day, I still tend to skidmaneuver my rear wheel through the occasional tight spot, but as you’ll read, I’ve acquired a new respect for performance front brakes.) It wasn’t until a few years back when the rear master on my Road King failed during a long ride home from Northern California. It was a Sunday, there was tons of traffic, and I just wanted to get home—so I purposely kept my right foot on the passenger peg (away from the brake pedal) and used the front brakes the rest of the way. Fortunately, Jeff Holt had just set me up with a new set of floating rotors and sintered pads, so the impromptu brake technique lesson went better than it could have. It also gave me a whole new relationship with—and subsequent reliability on— using the front brakes the majority of the time. That all pretty much changed when my ’90 FXR entered my life not too long ago. Its front brake was nothing like the Road King’s duals. Matter of fact, whenever I could squeeze enough lever to get it to work, it locked up. My old rear braking “skills” re-emerged for a spell—until I crossed paths with Still Kicking Moto’s (a.k.a. S-K) Juan Munoz. While many dual-disc aftermarket setups are designed for the ’99–later 39mm lowers, S-K offers a machined billet bracket for the earlier style/offset mounting, which accept the readily available two-piston Tokico calipers that came OE on a variety of Suzuki and Kawasaki 600s (plentiful and cheap on eBay). Being a “floating” caliper, they perform much more efficiently than its fixed predecessor, not to mention don’t have the same inherent squealing characteristics. So here’s how the basic dual-disc upgrade pans out parts wise: dual-disc 39mm (or just a right side leg), adapter brackets, calipers (that use 10 x 1.25mm banjo bolts, which work with stock H-D brake lines), 11.5-inch rotors, and an 11/16 bore master cylinder. I further added to the parts pile with a pair of Galfer USA Wave floating rotors (with a matched fixed Wave rear), had an all-new brake line set built by Mesa Hose, and threw on a Biltwell bar and riser combo. You can take it even further by adding new controls (S-K offers Brembo and ASV options), but to simply bring your FXR/Dyna up to that 70-percent range as it should be, the basics are all it takes.

1 p S-K Moto’s caliper bracket adapters accept the popular

Tokico dual-piston floaters and 11.5-inch rotors. To complement the calipers, I upped the ante with Galfer USA’s Wave floating rotors (DFP12083), which are made from non-recycled high-carbon 420 stainless. (Note, these are designed for ’00–later H-D hubs and, thus as you will see, require a machine spacer that S-K provides.)

2 p (Above and below) The rotor bolt patterns are the

same, however the later-model centers are slightly larger (2.212-inch versus 1.985-inch). Juan first machined a chamfer on the inner edge of the center ring “spokes” to seat the rotor over his stepped spacer.

P O T E T H RCE SOU T HE F OROJE T DYN E R P OWION VIS 3 p Minus the calipers, which can be found on eBay ranging from $20 for used take-offs up to around $100 or so for a

rebuilt pair, this is the basic adapter setup from S-K. The aluminum brackets are machined for R/L fitment and tapped to mount on pre-2000 Showa 39mm legs.

the calipers, as such, which will install once the wheel is in place with the rotors on.

• Narrow Rotor fits in Softail/Dyna, voltage regulator mounts in stock location. Available for Evo and Twin Cam Engines. • Precision wound 3Phase Stators provides 25 AMPS at idle, 40 AMPS continuously above 2,800 RPM! • Vented rotor keeps stator cooler to maintain maximum output. • Custom designed flanged seal spacer provides maximum support for the vented rotor. • Series Voltage Regulator provides 14.2V from idle on up!

p I’d originally sourced a pair of six-piston Tokico radial

calipers (GSXR 1100 type) to use, but they would require that the wheel spokes be machined quite a bit for clearance (the smaller two-piston calipers are more than sufficient). Nevertheless, the brakes also came with the lines and this Nissin junction block, which fit perfectly below the lower tree.

(which require the non-countersunk style hardware), Juan chucked the wheel up in the front end and threw the calipers on in preparation of having Mesa Hose build a custom brake-line set.

the lines on the actual front end, in order to get the master cylinder-to-junction line the right length, we had to have the bars and risers installed. 12 p Once the front end was reinstalled on the bike and

9 p Keep in mind, the Tokico calipers used DOT4 brake fluid—

Loctite was used on every bolt, the front brakes were fully bled. I noticed that even the slightest of air bubbles will cause the lever to be spongy, which is why it’s important to make sure the master is bled properly as well.

if you’re running them without rebuilding, they’ll need to continue using DOT4 (which will require the master cylinder to be flushed clean of all DOT5). It makes more sense to start with freshly rebuilt calipers and stick solely with DOT5 throughout. The new EBC pads were obtained from Malcom Smith but definitely can be found cheaper online.

10 p The stock single-disc master cylinder (5/8-bore) was

swapped out—ironically enough—the 11/16 master off the very same Road King that learned me the importance of front brakes in the first place. Prior to bleeding the entire front brake system, the master was bled individually.

13 p The rear wheel was also treated to a Galfer rotor, this

time a solid-mount 11.5-inch Wave (DF682W) with Galfer’s semi-metallic carbon OE replacement pads. After bleeding the rear and bedding (breaking in) the new pads and rotors, my old relationship with prominent front braking was finally rekindled. While all the parts combined completely changed the braking characteristics of the bike, the front setup alone was the biggest performance difference—hands down. the left side is notched accordingly for the speedo drive.

For this demonstration I’ve cut a disk approximately 8 to 9 inches in diameter out of 13-gauge aluminum.

STUMPED?

THIS MONTH WE’LL PUT IT TO USE SHOWING YOU THE VERY BASICS OF HOW TO EFFECTIVELY SHRINK MATERIAL WITH ONLY A SINGLE WOODEN MALLET AND WOODEN STUMP.

1 p Whenever I talk about shaping aluminum the question

of annealing always comes up. No annealing was used in this demonstration. We’ll talk about annealing in the future when the time is right.

2 p To start the shrinking process you need to put the edge of

the disk toward the lip of the dish.

3 p We will be using the pointed end of this shaping mallet.

4 p I concentrate mallet blows all the way around the

perimeter of the disk all while rotating the disk to keep the blows just off the lip of the dish.

70 / HOTBIKE.COM

5 p Once you’ve worked the outer edge of the disk you will

see the edge start to pucker or tuck, which creates a wavy edge. That is what we want it to do.

6 p Now we take the blunt end of the mallet and hammer

those tucks flat on a flat portion of the stump surface.

7 p Once those tucks are flattened we have effectively

shrunk the edge of the disk to allow us to create a radiused dish from the flat disk.

8

9

p Next we will do the same thing, but the pattern of

hammer blows will be within the first round.

p You will again position the disk so that the hammer

blows are located near the lip of the dish to force the disk to continue to tuck.

10

11

p As you work farther inward, the tucks may become fewer but can be more pronounced as

p I do the same thing again to hammer those tucks flat on the stump.

seen here.

13

This process will continue until you reach the center of the disk.

Once we’ve reached the center we will see quite a drastic change in the disk, as it is starting to get some depth and radius.

12

14

15

p I made this stump many months ago, and it has traveled and shaped a lot of material. I

p I continued to use the dish and the flat portion of the stump to make a uniform radius

made this one about 6 inches thick to keep down the weight and make it easy to transport. I lost a good chunk of the stump because it has dried out and taken a lot of abuse, but that didn’t render it useless.

to the once-flat disk. You can actually see how the disk has started to match the radius of the dish in the stump.

t With continued work with only this one wooden mallet and this stump you can see that you can get a lot of shape from a sheet of metal. I was able to reach a radius tighter than that of the dish on the stump. I also achieved a pretty smooth surface.

Next month we’ll take a look at using a planishing hammer to bring mallet work to a silky smooth finish. If you have questions or suggestions for future issues, please email me at joe@snap-fab.com. Cheers! HB MARCH 2017 / 71

BATTLECRUISE H50 TIRES B

ridgestone Tires has been making the round rubber since 1931. In 1988 it purchased Firestone, which has been making tires since 1900. Point being, with more than a century of being combined business it’s safe to say Bridgestone knows a thing or two when it comes to making tires. When it comes to replacement tires for your V-twin motorcycle, there haven’t been a lot of choices. When looking to increase performance, it always seemed to be followed with a decline in mileage. Enter the Battlecruise H50. The Battlecruise tire line is the first motorcycle tire from Bridgestone designed exclusively for the unique characteristics of the American V-twin market. Using some fancy technology called the Ultimat Eye, this allowed Bridgestone to push the Battlecruise to its virtual limits

74 / HOTBIKE.COM

before ever making the first unit. Both the rear and front tire profiles were optimized to optimize the slip and adhesion and maximize the cornering power. We headed out to Orlando, Florida, to try the latest rubbers out for ourselves. After a brief presentation, it was obvious that Bridgestone came to play with the Battlecruise H50s. They are claiming better tread life, higher cornering power, more precise handling, and superior grip in both dry and wet surfaces than their unnamed closest competitor. Time to put up or shut up. We headed out first thing in the morning in the blistering 60-degree Florida air atop a line of Indian Scouts. While hardly a cold start, right off the bat the tires felt firm and grippy. As the rolling resistance heated up the tires, they became increasingly more pliable. The best way to describe the feeling is walking on a foam matt versus a carpeted floor. There was a definite feeling of increased grip that was only reconfirmed when I hopped on the same Indian Scout with factory tires. As we rode around our fewhundred-mile route through the back roads of Florida, I attempted several panic stops, and it also proved to have the same extra stopping power. As they say, Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither is testing mileage on a tire. I’d like to add the Battlecruise H50 on a long-term to see how they perform over the long haul. If you’re looking for an alternative replacement for your motorcycle, make sure to put the Battlecruise H50s on your list. Smaller V-twins sizes are available now, while touring models will come in January of 2018 in the most popular sizes. HB BRIDGESTONE.COM

ere is my first attempt at a restoration. It’s a 2007 HarleyDavidson 1200 Nightster that was salvaged. I combined a Nightster rear fender and a 1200 Custom fender to create more arch. I stripped a 1200 Anniversary tank and kept the top chrome trim and gas cap. Then I replaced the speedo housing top clamp with a Joker racing top clamp and eliminated speedo. I also added Ryca Motors Clubman

handlebars with RWD mirrors, Arlen Ness knurled handgrips and footpegs, Saddlemen studded leather solo seat. For performance I added an Arlen Ness big sucker air filter, Cobra 2-into-1 chrome exhaust, and a Fuelpak under the seat. THE

DIAGNOSTIC CHECKUP

M

ost everyone is aware of the need for an FI remap on a Harley. It’ll dramatically sweeten the performance of a stock bike, and when you’ve added a free-flowing exhaust, a good air filter, and maybe some aggressive cams to a

V-twin, that remap becomes mandatory. That’s why the aftermarket is filled with fuel-management modules and systems all aimed at supplying that necessary computer remap and making it an easy at-home deal. It’s big business and if we’re to believe the claims all you have to do is install these electrical wonders and go for a ride. Presto, the bike automatically recalibrates itself to fuel-delivery perfection, new exhaust, air filter, and cams taken into account. Sounds great, and for the most part it is. Or it can be. “Those auto-tunes really do work,” says Jamie Hanson of Speed’s Performance Plus. “To a point.” Tuning specialists, the SPP techs, have found that to perform their best an auto-tune system really needs a full, custom remapping first. A contradiction? Isn’t that auto-tune system supposed to eliminate the need for a custom dyno session? Not entirely, say the guys at Speed’s. Their preferred method, and one that’s made countless riders happy, is to use auto-tune as an addon, a supplement to the kind of custom dyno tune they’ve done for years. The reasoning: Auto-tune systems, and their sensors, perform best within a finite parameter, making relatively small adjustments to the air/fuel ratio. “So we’ll begin by tuning the bike perfectly on the dyno,” Jamie goes on to explain. “Once we have that custom map as a base then we’ll turn on the auto-tune unit and let it keep that custom tune wherever the bike might go. It’s a procedure we’ve found to work a lot better than just asking an auto-tune to adapt to some pretty big changes.” But what about all those “pre-written” base maps available with the autotune systems? The ones you download from the internet? They’ll list the year

80 / HOTBIKE.COM

and model of a particular fuel-injected Harley, and if you scroll through the library you might find a map not only based on your particular bike but your bike with the same aftermarket pipes and air filter you’ve installed—and if you’re lucky even the cams you might have added. Won’t that take the place of a custom dyno tune as the starting point for an auto-tune? “Let’s think about that for a minute,” Jamie warns. “Good as they are, a pre-written base map, even taking into account all the extra equipment that might be on the bike, can never be absolutely correct for every particular motorcycle. No two motorcycles are ever exactly identical. Their engines are made from different batches of metal that might expand and contract differently, the mileage and wear rates are different, that prewritten map might have been developed on a brand-new bike where yours has 25,000 miles on it—there’s just a host of differences, big and small, between two seemingly identical bikes. That’s why we’ve found that a custom dyno tune and a base map written for one specific bike, and that bike exclusively, is so important. It’ll be perfect, not just close.” An example of this, Jamie says, happened at just the last event the SPP team went to. A rider came in with what he considered to be a pretty good-running bike. He’d installed an auto-tune system with a pre-written map under it. “And when we put that

bike on the dyno and hooked up all the analyzers, that guy couldn’t have been more surprised,” Jamie says. “His setup was all over the place.” After building a custom map for that bike, the result was even more surprising, 8 more horsepower, 8 more poundfeet of torque, and most importantly a seat-of-the-pants all-around feel with a night-and-day improvement. “And this guy thought he already had a pretty good-running bike,” he says. That’s the difference between a custom map and a generic map as the starting point. Takeaway here? Auto-tune systems are an electro/mechanical marvel, and when it comes to that final fine-tune they’re hard to beat. But consider turning your bike over to a professional tuner for a diagnostic dyno pull first, especially if you’ve downloaded a custom map from the internet. Think of it as a trip to the doctor for a checkup. All might be well, but then again maybe not. “And honestly,” Jamie ends, “easily 90 percent of those bikes in for a diagnostic dyno pull really need to be tuned. Some might not be too bad, but they’re not perfect. And rare indeed is the bike with a tune-up that’s right on the nuts. It does happen but not often.” Something to think about.
