Employee of the Month March 2019 – Elexis Baral Congratulations to Elexis, Employee of the Month for March. Elexis is a Research Engineer in the Department of Biomechanics who has been a member of the HSS family since 2013.

She has been described by her colleagues as an outstanding employee who is consistently upbeat, helpful and personable.

Elexis runs the entire implant retrieval program at HSS. She cleans and examines the approximately 1,000 total joint replacements per year that come out of patients during revision surgeries. She also works with physician offices to ensure requested hardware and implants are returned back to patients.

In addition to running the retrieval program, Elexis is always making an effort to improve the quality of work in her department. She is the first person her colleagues will go to for help with anything in the lab. According to a colleague, Elexis is the person that holds together her group so that research can be done in a smooth and efficient manner.

Employee Safety Zone Adults Need Vaccines Too! Vaccine preventable diseases kill thousands of adults each year. Although you might be familiar with childhood vaccines, it is important to know that adults also need protection from diseases through vaccines.

Flu Vaccine At HSS, everyone is familiar with the yearly flu vaccine program, which usually starts in September and continues through the winter and beyond. It is recommended annually for all adults, including pregnant women. If you contract the flu, you can be contagious one day before symptoms (usually fever, chills, headache, muscle aches and dry cough) and 5-7 days after the start of symptoms. The flu is spread by tiny droplets from the mouth and nose of the infected person through talking, sneezing and coughing. Influenza can result in severe illness, hospitalization and, in rare cases, death.

Tetanus, Diphtheria, Whooping Cough

Occupational Health Services (OHS) can also vaccinate you with Tdap to protect you against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (whooping cough). This vaccine can be given to pregnant women and employees who may have exposure to newborns, but is most commonly given to those with work-related lacerations or puncture wounds.

Hepatitis B Employees who have jobs with risk factors related to blood and bodily fluids should be vaccinated against hepatitis B. It is recommended that everyone is vaccinated against hepatitis B, and all new employees are screened for hepatitis B during their pre-employment physical. For those who are not immune, the vaccine is available at OHS and is given in three doses over a six month period. The hepatitis B virus can lead to chronic liver infections, liver failure and death.
