MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Friends and Supporters,

The theme of this annual report—Guided by Compassion—reminds each of us to allow compassion to shape the ways in which we support others, make decisions, and interact in our work and daily lives.

As we reflect on the past year, we are gratified by the levels of compassion and consideration that helped Hospice Giving Foundation impact so many people in our community. This includes the donors who so generously support our work; the clinicians and providers who seek out the best ways to care for patients and their families; and our team who demonstrates the highest degree of commitment and dedication. Each one in their unique way prioritizes concern for those who are suffering, maintains an unrelenting focus on improving care, and advocates for better resources, more preparedness, and greater acceptance.

This community’s generosity built HG Foundation, and in return we are dedicated to promoting excellence in end-of-life care through a multi-pronged approach. Our varied roles are complimentary and informative. First, we are a funder and in our 25 years have granted over $31MM to local providers. Next, we are educators, helping people understand the complexities of end-of-life care and services, how to be prepared and make sometimes difficult decisions. We are also a convener, believing the path to improving care is to bring together the clinicians and practitioners to talk about the work, explore the challenges, and focus on elevating care. These approaches support our commitment to stand for no less than doing our best for the people in our communities.

It is my honor to pen my final annual report letter to our community. As the Board, staff, and I work together to create a seamless leadership transition, our focus will continue to be on elevating end-of-life care, with specific attention to spiritual care, caregiver needs, palliative care, and bereavement. Today and always, I take great joy in Hospice Giving Foundation’s impact locally and will always be proud of the many achievements and successes this amazing Foundation brings to our communities.

YOUR GIFTS AT WORK

Generosity is the fuel that powers Hospice Giving Foundation’s impact. Our donors’ contributions enable a rich array of hospice and palliative care services, and by way of those services, touch thousands of people in our community annually. Gifts support grants and the infrastructure needed to adhere to the highest standards of grantmaking, including thorough due diligence on requests, evaluating programs, and assessing the progress and impact of all grant awards. Contributions also support all outreach and community education conducted throughout the county, as well as professional development and collaborative work groups focused on elevating care. Specifics about our education programs and the types of grants awarded are found throughout this report.

Our vision is made possible by philanthropy. Hospice Giving Foundation envisions a time when the highest quality of person-centered palliative and hospice care is accessible to all, regardless of income, language, or place of residence. We imagine that neighbors, friends, and family members of all cultures can more easily discuss end-of-life plans with loved ones. And most importantly, we advocate for a coordinated system of care to support patients and their family members.

We value the collaborative muscle that our partnerships bring. As conveners, we support relationship building and collaboration by coordinating and hosting hospice and palliative care providers in ad hoc, as well as ongoing meetings. The participants include physicians, nurses, chaplains, social workers, attorneys, therapists, and administrators, each with wisdom and perspectives on how best to serve our community. The strategies include learning from each other, sharing insights, supporting one another in this difficult work, and having subject matter experts provide education and training. The power and purpose of these collaborative work groups is to create a coordinated system of care that better serves people at the end of life.

In working with our thought partners, we promote preparedness. The Advance Care Planning ad hoc task force, established by Hospice Giving Foundation in 2022, culminated in July 2023 by disseminating detailed implementation recommendations to local healthcare leadership as well as clinics throughout the county. Consumer-directed informational materials were created and distributed widely in both English and Spanish, in print and digital formats, and shared in workshops in the county. SUPPORTING THE COMMUNITY WITH EDUCATION

To normalize end-of-life care conversations and preparedness, Hospice Giving Foundation continues to offer guidance, information, and solutions to address this problem in a way that is culturally relevant. Proactively educating people about the death and dying process is critical to elevating care across socio-economic levels.

In 2023, our focus was to explore new locations for our educational programs, expand our network, and find new professionals and partners who will help us make connections in a meaningful way according to age, culture, religion, and language. LEAVING A LASTING IMPACT AND A LEGACY OF COMPASSIONATE CARE

After completing a degree in recreation therapy, Siobhan Greene, a young professional, was leaning into life, focused on rehabilitation, life skills, and hope. Particularly on behalf of youth. She had not considered helming an organization dedicated to the advocacy of those who are dying. Greene also never imagined how quickly the years would pass before she had invested a decade of service and found herself facing another rite of passage. Siobhan Greene has made the difficult decision to retire.

“This is a melancholy time for me,” says Greene, “as I prepare to retire sometime between January and June, once the new president and CEO has been named. There are days when I ask myself why I’m retiring from the wonderful people and work I love. It’s because the time is right. Although it will be hard to leave, I look forward to helping onboard my successor, and then stepping aside to let them make their way.”

LEAVING A LEGACY

Looking back on her work with Hospice Giving Foundation, Siobhan Greene considers the kind of legacy she will leave, a lasting impact of her investment and contribution to the community. She is, perhaps, most proud of her collaborative work with local practitioners, as well as the two-year, $1.5 million commitment to launch "Heal Together," a program to expand grief and bereavement services throughout Monterey County in the wake of the pandemic. This initiative has helped expand programs, coordinate agencies, introduce bilingual and bicultural services, and promote other interventions.

“In the early days of the pandemic,” she says, “I held a regular meeting via Zoom, with nurses or staff from skilled nursing facilities. This was one of the richest outgrowths from the dynamics of a terrible time. Every week, for nearly a year and a half, we talked about what they were experiencing, what they needed, and what it meant to have the support of a collaborative. They trusted me. It was remarkable.”

To leave a legacy in which a positive influence is remembered, honored, and still felt or experienced by others, Jean Duff, a 25-year devoted board director of the Hospice Giving Foundation, believes it extends beyond the importance of financial support to include the service of acknowledging and addressing the struggles, the needs, the lives of others. As a long-time hospice volunteer, sitting at the bedside of many patients, Jean knows a lot about this.

“Most of the things we get from our work with hospice,” she says, “are intangible but so present. It is good to be able to rustle up a few dollars to donate, but dying is a process that should be shared. To bear witness to this in others, to help them make a gracious exit, is our legacy. I have loved this organization; it has been my longest and most favorite hobby. Through Hospice Giving Foundation, I’ve met angels on earth, and each is a blessing.”

As she takes in the measure of Siobhan Greene’s impending retirement, Duff is considering how to give thanks to the leader she considers an “unsung hero.”

“Here’s what gratitude would look like for me,” says Greene. “All of you who have been so supportive of

me, embrace the new person, saying, ‘Come on in; we’re in it with you.’ That creates the culture, the resources, the sense of community—the legacy we’re looking for. When this organization continues to grow and thrive in the next set of hands, I, too, will give gratitude.”

The question which remains, says Greene, is how to thank Jean Duff, how to give gratitude to someone who has devoted more than 25 years of service and generosity to her community.

“No thanking is needed,” says Duff. “I don’t participate and then look back, waiting for gratitude.”

“But we are very grateful to you,” Greene says. “I selfishly want people in our community to know how much you mean to me, to all of us. You inspire other people to give, to be dedicated to service, and to hold the bar high.”

“I like that. You couldn’t have said that more nicely,” says Duff, “unless you were to say it to yourself.”

Deep into a career devoted to helping others, what truly makes Siobhan Greene’s life complete, she says, are her children, her husband, her dog, and the time she spends with them. “It has been a rich and rewarding career,” she says, “but nothing is as rewarding and lovely as my family. It’s their turn.”

FINANCE

The Board of Directors appoints an Investment Advisory Committee and receives professional guidance from Verus Investments to strategically invest and manage donor funds. Together they set policies and develop long-term growth tactics to generate the greatest impact while remaining aligned with the mission and vision of Hospice Giving Foundation.

The financial structure of Hospice Giving Foundation’s long-term investments, along with well-defined spending policies for grants, allows HG Foundation to be sustainable into perpetuity. Bequest

and legacy gifts have been pivotal in helping HG Foundation build its base of assets to maintain our commitment to the community. In addition to the primary grant making portfolio, HG Foundation maintains a donor restricted endowment, from which gains may be used to support specific areas of end-of-life care. HG Foundation retains a reserve account for emergency grants or crisis issues that may arise. As a community-based funder, we use the power of investments to fund innovation in end-of-life care and address emergent issues in the serious illness field.

GRANT FUNDING

With our 2023 grants, Hospice Giving Foundation is proud to have surpassed $31,000,000 invested into our community, since 1997, for end-of-life care and services. A carefully honed and detailed process ensures donor contributions are used wisely and effectively. Every year, the Programs and Grants Committee, composed of Board Directors and staff, conducts in-depth reviews of all grant requests to make certain all are mission centric and focus on providing the greatest benefit for people throughout our community. We delve into the needs being addressed, innovative solutions to issues, and work to have open dialogue with the agency staff and providers. This process informs HG Foundation board and staff about the complexities, challenges, and impact of an agency’s work and enables us to build relationships with the agencies we fund.

We are very proud of all our funded agencies and believe this thoughtful process honors their work, our fiduciary duties, and most importantly, the needs of local individuals and families.

In 2023, grant awards to local providers totaled $1,089,104. Highlights included funding for the first-ever, full-time spiritual care provider/chaplain at Natividad Medical Center, residential hospice for the most vulnerable community members, coordination and specialized training for both palliative and hospice care volunteers, perinatal grief support, acupuncture for pain management at end of life, and a wide range of services for families with a critically ill child.

TOSHIA AND CLARK STRUVE

Our conversation with Toshia and Clark started by asking what made them get involved. It turns out for Clark, his dedication to compassionate care at end of life started when he was 19 years old. His dad, Carl, a thriving business man, loved by everyone, and so giving to his community, developed colon cancer. Carl’s final days were spent in a dark, gloomy, sad nursing home. Clark remembered it as a place with no dignity. The experience deeply impacted Clark. From then on, he knew he would emulate his dad, get involved in his community, and make an impact. When Helen Westland

and Dan Tibbets brought him into the local hospice scene, his commitment to his father and his community came full circle.

For Toshia, the gift of hospice became real when her stepfather’s health was failing. Her mom, Bea, was overwhelmed by her husband Earl’s suffering. Clark recommended hospice; and though Toshia knew of Clark’s involvement, neither she nor Bea really understood what hospice did. A deeply caring and insightful healthcare worker met with them, and simply asked, “Why is he still here? What is he holding onto? His

body is done.” They realized there were issues haunting Earl that were keeping him alive. For one, Toshia needed to promise Earl that she would take care of her mother, and Earl had things to settle too. This help from hospice allowed Earl to die with a sense of peace which eased all their suffering.

In their lives, Toshia and Clark know what a privilege it is to live in this special area. They believe it’s a gift to be able to give back. Their families taught them to take care of people. Clark put it simply, “Because we can, because we have some to share, that helps everybody.” And they are very proud of their consistency---giving every year, for over 35 years, to three local organizations, one of them Hospice Giving Foundation. For the Struves, what makes them so consistent is the organization’s ability to accomplish great things. It’s all about the people who have such good hearts, those who make it happen. “The forward thinking of the organization’s leadership keeps us going.”

Toshia closed by reflecting on Hospice Giving Foundation’s annual Tree of Life, such a special way to remember and celebrate people. "Those touched the most by receiving a Tree of Life tribute card are often people who lost a loved one earlier in the year. The card lets them know we remember their special someone. Tree of Life gives us a way to celebrate a friendship, a kindness, an appreciation, and a memory. All the things Hospice Giving Foundation does touch people in so many different ways."

And all of us at Hospice Giving Foundation are deeply touched by and grateful for Clark and Toshia.

NATIONAL PHILANTHROPY DAY

On November 17th, Hospice Giving Foundation was recognized as the Outstanding Philanthropic Foundation of the Year, by the local chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals and local judges. This prestigious award was presented at the annual National Philanthropy Day luncheon with over 350 guests in attendance. In her acceptance speech, Siobhan Greene commented, “This very special award is a statement that says we are a healthy community when our friends, neighbors, and families find time to talk about end of life, express wishes, and prepare. It’s a statement that says all people in our community, no matter their origins or circumstances, deserve good, caring, and dignified care through their final days.” All of us at Hospice Giving Foundation are proud and humbled by this recognition.

THE GRATITUDE LUNCHEON

After weeks of torrential rain, road closures, and power outages, on March 16th the sun came out, roads opened, and a message of hope replaced the atmosphere of destruction and loss. At Hospice Giving Foundation’s 25th Anniversary Gratitude Luncheon held at the Inn at Spanish Bay, Dr. BJ Miller took to the stage and helped bring perspective to the daunting issues of serious illness and end of life. With unmeasurable calm he spoke about how each of us can envision this time, have some agency over the process, and be reflective in ways that steady the course. With over 200 donors, longtime supporters, and local clinicians in the room, his wisdom further deepened our sense of community and purpose. Following the public presentation, Dr. Miller met with about 30 local clinicians to explore this vital work.

The Gratitude Luncheon is a tradition at Hospice Giving Foundation to express our appreciation for those whose commitments and contributions have made our work possible. THE PARTY

In the fall of 2023, Hospice Giving Foundation held its bi-annual fundraising gala, The Party, at the beautiful Tehama Golf Course in Carmel, CA. We celebrated this event on World Hospice and Palliative Care Day -- October 14, 2023. The alignment of the global focus underscored our local mission; to live fully and die peacefully, to promote personal choice, preparedness, and the highest standards of compassionate, dignified end-of-life care for individuals and their loved ones.

With a silent auction, a collection of impressively diverse raffle items, and the ambiance of a celebratory crowd, the night was set for a huge success. The portion of the night that highlighted the emotion and purpose of the event was the dedication video, which was accompanied by a live performance of “I’ll See You in My Dreams” by Bruce Springsteen, performed by Byron Greene and Dennis Murphy. We created a video of our guests’ loved ones who have passed, so that we could remember and honor them. Our sincerest gratitude to all the vendors, performers, and volunteers who made this night such an enjoyable experience for all who came. DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS CELEBRATION

Día de los Muertos, a tradition deeply rooted in Mexican culture, pays tribute to our departed loved ones. This 2023, Hospice Giving Foundation presented the third annual event in collaboration with Hartnell College and Hijos del Sol Arts Productions. The celebration took place the night of November 2nd at the Hartnell College Plaza and Student Center in Salinas. Over 600 community members were present to eat traditional foods, tour the resource fair, and enjoy more than a dozen altars made by community members and local organizations. Notably, Hijos del Sol Art Productions created a community altar, allowing our guests to contribute their offerings in a communal way.

The event included a procession led by musical trio, Sol de México, through the Hartnell College Plaza. Participants were encouraged to dress in costumes representing admired individuals or departed loved ones; immortalizing and honoring them. Additionally, literary enthusiasts enjoyed the "Calaveritas Literarias" inspired by iconic imagery like "La Catrina," representing the goddess Mictecacihuatl. These poetic satires, presented by local poet José Alejandro Morán, added a touch of humor and wit. Participants were also able to enjoy the “Danza de los Viejitos” from Los Lupeños de San José, a “Danza Folclórica” by Faldas y Flores: Folklore Mexicano, and live music by Mariachi Hermanos Muratalla. TREE OF LIFE

For 39 years, Hospice Giving Foundation has invited the people of Monterey County to celebrate the Tree of Life Event. The evening program is designed to remember those who we wish to keep in our hearts, particularly during the holidays. Our friends at Portola Hotel & Spa have hosted the event for years, while the Marriott houses the Hospice Giving Foundation Tree, easily visible from the rooftop in downtown Monterey. At the end of the program, the tree lights up. Each light on the tree is a beautiful reminder of loved ones through the month of December.

This year, we were lucky to welcome back the Carmel High School Chamber Choir for their 9th year as performers. Tom Lehmkuhl and the Chamber Choir left our guests standing in applause with chills on our arms. Additionally, Carlos Tottress and members of the CSUMB Chorale kicked our night off with a lively performance that moved our guests to dance in celebration. Our newest performers were the McMonarch’s, a local Celtic Group led by John Weed. Their instrumental music provided a new feel to the event, opening the possibilities for what the next 40 years might look like.

An immense thank you to all the performers, volunteers, and everyone who made this event such a beautiful moment of remembrance for community members honoring loved ones who are no longer in the physical world.

MENSAJE DE LA PRESIDENTA

Queridos amigos y simpatizantes, El tema de este informe anual, "Guiados por la Compasión", nos recuerda a cada uno de nosotros la importancia de permitirnos que la compasión moldee las formas en que apoyamos a otros para tomar decisiones e interactuar en nuestro trabajo y vida diaria.

La generosidad es el combustible que impulsa el impacto de Hospice Giving Foundation. Las contribuciones de nuestros donantes permiten una amplia gama de servicios de cuidados paliativos y hospice y, a través de esos servicios, llegan a miles de personas en nuestra comunidad anualmente. Los donativos respaldan subvenciones y la infraestructura necesaria para cumplir con los más altos estándares en la concesión de subvenciones, lo que incluye una exhaustiva debida diligencia en las solicitudes, la evaluación de programas y la valoración del progreso y el impacto de todas las subvenciones. Las contribuciones también respaldan toda la divulgación y educación comunitaria realizada en todo el condado, así como el desarrollo profesional y grupos de trabajo colaborativos centrados en elevar la atención. Nuestra visión es posible gracias a la filantropía. HG Foundation imagina un momento en el que la atención paliativa y de hospice es de la más alta calidad, centrada en la persona, sea accesible para todos, independientemente de sus ingresos, idioma o lugar de residencia.

Nos imaginamos que los vecinos, amigos y familiares de todas las culturas puedan discutir más fácilmente los planes de fin de vida con sus seres queridos. Y lo más importante, abogamos por un sistema coordinado de atención para apoyar a los pacientes y sus familiares.

Valoramos lo que aportan nuestras asociaciones. Como facilitadores, respaldamos la construcción de relaciones y la colaboración al coordinar y organizar a proveedores de cuidados paliativos y de hospice en reuniones tanto ad hoc como continuas. Los participantes incluyen médicos, enfermeros, capellanes, trabajadores sociales, abogados, terapeutas y administradores, cada uno con sabiduría y perspectivas sobre cómo servir mejor a nuestra comunidad. Las estrategias incluyen aprender unos de otros, compartir ideas, apoyarse mutuamente en este trabajo difícil y contar con expertos en la materia para brindar educación y capacitación. El poder y el propósito de estos grupos de trabajo colaborativos es crear un sistema coordinado de atención que sirva mejor a las personas al final de la vida.

Al trabajar con nuestros socios promovemos la preparación. El grupo de trabajo de Planificación Anticipada de Atención establecido por HG Foundation en 2022 culminó en julio de 2023 al difundir recomendaciones detalladas de implementación al liderazgo de atención médica local, así como a clínicas en todo el condado. Se crearon y distribuyeron materiales informativos dirigidos al consumidor en inglés y español, en formatos impresos y digitales, y se compartieron en talleres en el condado. RESPALDANDO A LA COMUNIDAD CON EDUCACIÓN

Para normalizar las conversaciones y la preparación para el final de la vida, Hospice Giving Foundation continúa ofreciendo orientación, información y soluciones para abordar este problema de manera culturalmente relevante. Educar proactivamente a las personas sobre el proceso de la muerte y el morir es fundamental para elevar la atención en todos los niveles socioeconómicos. DURADERO Y UN LEGADO DE ATENCIÓN COMPASIVA

Después de completar una licenciatura en terapia recreativa, Siobhan Greene, una joven profesional, se inclinaba hacia la vida enfocada en la rehabilitación, habilidades para la vida y la esperanza, especialmente para los jóvenes. Nunca había considerado liderar una organización dedicada a la defensa de quienes están muriendo. Greene tampoco imaginó cuán rápido pasarían los años antes de que invirtiera una década de servicio y se encontrara enfrentando otro rito de paso. Siobhan Greene ha tomado la difícil decisión de jubilarse. "Este es un momento melancólico para mí", dijo Greene, "ya que me preparo para jubilarme entre enero y junio, una vez que se nombre al nuevo presidente y CEO. Hay días en los que me pregunto por qué me retiro de las maravillosas personas y el trabajo que amo. Es porque es el momento adecuado. Aunque será difícil irme, espero con ansias ayudar a integrar a mi sucesor y luego apartarme para permitirles seguir su camino".

DEJANDO UN LEGADO

Al mirar hacia atrás en su trabajo con Hospice Giving Foundation, Siobhan Greene considera el tipo de legado que dejará, un impacto duradero de su inversión y contribución a la comunidad. Está especialmente orgullosa de su trabajo colaborativo con los profesionales locales, así como del compromiso de dos años y $1.5 millones de dólares para lanzar "Sanando Juntos", un programa para expandir los servicios de duelo y aflicción en todo el condado de Monterey después de la pandemia. Esta iniciativa ha ayudado a expandir programas, coordinar agencias, introducir servicios bilingües y biculturales, y promover otras intervenciones.

"En los primeros días de la pandemia", relata Greene, "realicé una reunión regular a través de la plataforma Zoom, con enfermeras o personal de instalaciones de enfermería especializada. Esto fue uno de los resultados más ricos de la dinámica de un momento terrible. Todas las semanas, durante casi un año y medio, hablamos sobre lo que estaban experimentando, lo que necesitaban y lo que significaba tener el apoyo de una colaboración. Confíaban en mí. Fue notable".

Para dejar un legado en el que se recuerde, honre y siga sintiendo o experimentando una influencia positiva, Jean Duff, una miembro - dedicada durante 25 años- de la mesa directiva de Hospice Giving Foundation, cree que va más allá de la importancia del apoyo financiero para incluir el servicio de reconocer y abordar las luchas, las necesidades y las vidas de los demás. Jean, como voluntaria de cuidado de hospice por mucho tiempo, que ha tenido la oportunidad de sentarse al lado de muchos pacientes, sabe mucho al respecto.

"La mayoría de las cosas que obtenemos de nuestro trabajo con el cuidado de hospice", dijo Jean, "son intangibles, pero tan presentes. Es bueno poder reunir unos cuantos dólares para donar, pero morir es un proceso que debería compartirse. Ser testigo de esto en los demás, ayudarlos a hacer una salida gentil, es nuestro legado. He amado esta organización; ha sido mi pasatiempo más largo y favorito. A través de HG Foundation, he conocido ángeles en la tierra, y cada uno es una bendición".

Mientras evalúa la magnitud del inminente retiro de Siobhan Greene, Duff está considerando cómo agradecer a la líder a la que considera una "heroína anónima".

"Así es como se vería la gratitud para mí", dijo Greene. "Todos

ustedes que han sido tan solidarios conmigo, acojan a mi sucesor, diciendo: 'Vamos, estamos contigo'. Eso crea la cultura, los recursos, el sentido de comunidad, el legado que estamos buscando. Cuando esta organización continúe creciendo y prosperando bajo el nuevo liderazgo, yo también expresaré gratitud".

La pregunta que aún queda, se cuestiona Greene, es cómo agradecer a Jean Duff, cómo expresar gratitud a alguien que ha dedicado más de 25 años de servicio y generosidad a su comunidad. "No se necesita agradecimiento", contesta Duff. "No participo y luego miro hacia atrás, esperando gratitud".

"Pero estamos muy agradecidos contigo", comenta Greene. "Egoístamente quiero que la gente de nuestra comunidad sepa cuánto significas para mí, para todos nosotros. Inspiras a otras personas a dar, a dedicarse al servicio y a mantener el listón alto".

"Me gusta eso. No podrías haberlo dicho de una manera más agradable", responde Duff, "a menos que lo dijeras a ti misma".

En medio de una carrera dedicada a ayudar a los demás, lo que realmente completa la vida de Siobhan Greene, son sus hijos, su esposo, su mascota y el tiempo que pasa con ellos. "Ha sido una carrera rica y gratificante", comenta, "pero nada es tan gratificante y encantador como mi familia. Es su turno".

Con nuestras subvenciones del 2023, Hospice Giving Foundation se enorgullece de haber superado los $31,000,000 invertidos en nuestra comunidad para la atención y servicios al final de la vida. En 2023 las subvenciones a proveedores locales totalizaron $1,089,104. Se incluyeron fondos para el primer proveedor/capellán de atención espiritual de tiempo completo en Natividad Medical Center, cuidado de hospice residencial para los miembros más vulnerables de la comunidad, coordinación y capacitación especializada tanto para voluntarios de cuidados paliativos como de hospice, apoyo al duelo perinatal, acupuntura para el manejo del dolor al final de la vida y una amplia gama de servicios para familias con un niño gravemente enfermo.

CONEXIÓN

PERFIL DEL PARTIDARIO TOSHIA Y CLARK STRUVE

Nuestra conversación con Toshia y Clark comenzó preguntándoles qué los llevó a involucrarse. Resulta que, para Clark, su dedicación a la atención compasiva al final de la vida comenzó cuando tenía 19 años de edad. Su padre, Carl, un próspero empresario, querido por todos y tan generoso con su comunidad, desarrolló cáncer de colon. Los últimos días de Carl los pasó en un hogar de ancianos oscuro, sombrío y triste. Clark lo recordó como un lugar carente de dignidad. La experiencia impactó

profundamente a Clark. A partir de ese momento, él sabía que imitaría a su padre, se involucraría en su comunidad y haría un impacto. Cuando Helen Westland y Dan Tibbets lo introdujeron en la escena local de hospice, su compromiso con su padre y su comunidad cerró el ciclo.

Para Toshia, el regalo del hospice se hizo real cuando la salud de su padrastro comenzó a deteriorar. Su madre, Bea, se sentía abrumada por el sufrimiento de su esposo Earl. Clark

recomendó el cuidado de hospice. Aunque Toshia sabía de la participación de Clark, ni ella ni Bea entendían realmente lo que hacía el hospice. Una trabajadora de la salud profundamente compasiva e intuitiva se reunió con ellos y simplemente preguntó: "¿Por qué todavía está aquí? ¿A qué se aferra? Su cuerpo ya no puede más". Se dieron cuenta de que había problemas que atormentaban a Earl y lo mantenían vivo. Por un lado, Toshia necesitaba prometerle a Earl que cuidaría de su madre, y Earl también tenía asuntos pendientes. Esta ayuda del hospice permitió que Earl muriera con una sensación de paz que alivió todo su sufrimiento.

En sus vidas, Toshia y Clark saben lo privilegiados que son al vivir en esta área especial. Creen que es un regalo poder devolver. Sus familias les enseñaron a cuidar de las personas. Clark lo resumió simplemente: "Porque podemos, porque tenemos algo para compartir, eso ayuda a todos". Y están muy orgullosos de su consistencia, dando cada año, durante más de 35 años, a tres organizaciones locales, una de ellas Hospice Giving Foundation. Para los Struve, lo que los hace tan consistentes es la capacidad de la organización para lograr grandes cosas. Todo se trata de las personas que tienen tan buenos corazones, aquellos que hacen que todo suceda. "El pensamiento avanzado del liderazgo de la organización nos mantiene en marcha".

Toshia cerró reflexionando sobre el evento anual Tree of Life (Árbol de la Vida) de Hospice Giving Foundation, una forma tan especial de recordar y celebrar a las personas. Aquellos que se ven más afectados al recibir una tarjeta de homenaje de Tree of Life son a menudo personas que perdieron a un ser querido a principios de año. La tarjeta les permite saber que recordamos a su ser querido. Tree of Life nos da una forma de celebrar una amistad, una bondad, un agradecimiento y un recuerdo. Todas las cosas que HG Foundation hace tocan a las personas de muchas maneras diferentes.

DÍA NACIONAL DE LA FILANTROPÍA

El 17 de noviembre de 2023, Hospice Giving Foundation fue reconocida como la Fundación Filantrópica Destacada del Año, por el capítulo local de la Asociación de Profesionales de Recaudación de Fondos y jueces locales. Este prestigioso premio se entregó en el almuerzo anual del Día Nacional de la Filantropía con más de 350 invitados presentes. En su discurso de aceptación, Siobhan Greene comentó, "Este premio tan especial es una afirmación de que somos una comunidad saludable cuando nuestros amigos, vecinos y familias encuentran tiempo para hablar sobre el final de la vida, expresar deseos y prepararse. Es una afirmación que dice que todas las personas en nuestra comunidad, sin importar sus orígenes o circunstancias, merecen atención buena, afectuosa y digna en sus últimos días". HUMANIDAD

EL ALMUERZO DE GRATITUD

Después de semanas de lluvias torrenciales, cierres de carreteras y cortes de energía, el 16 de marzo salió el sol, las carreteras se abrieron y un mensaje de esperanza reemplazó la atmósfera de destrucción y pérdida. En el Almuerzo de Gratitud del 25º Aniversario de Hospice Giving Foundation, celebrado en Inn at Spanish Bay, el Dr. BJ Miller subió al escenario y ayudó a dar perspectiva a los desafíos abrumadores de las enfermedades graves y el final de la vida. Con una calma inmensurable, habló sobre cómo cada uno de nosotros puede imaginar este momento, tener cierto control sobre el proceso y reflexionar de maneras que estabilicen el rumbo. Con más de 200 donantes, partidarios de mucho tiempo y profesionales locales en la sala, su sabiduría profundizó aún más nuestro sentido de comunidad y propósito. Después de la presentación pública, el Dr. Miller se reunió con alrededor de 30 profesionales locales para explorar este trabajo vital. Celebramos este evento el Día Mundial de los Cuidados Paliativos, el 14 de octubre de 2023. La alineación del enfoque global subrayó nuestra misión local: vivir plenamente y morir en paz, promover la elección personal, la preparación y los más altos estándares de atención compasiva y digna al final de la vida para individuos y sus seres queridos. Con una subasta silenciosa, una colección impresionantemente diversa de premios para la rifa y el ambiente de una multitud festiva, la noche estaba lista para ser un gran éxito. La parte de la noche que destacó la emoción y el propósito del evento fue el video de dedicación, que estuvo acompañado por una interpretación en vivo de "I'll See You in My Dreams" de Bruce Springsteen, interpretada por Byron Greene y Dennis Murphy. CELEBRACIÓN DEL DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS

Día de los Muertos es una tradición profundamente arraigada en la cultura mexicana que rinde homenaje a nuestros seres queridos fallecidos. Este 2023, Hospice Giving Foundation presentó el tercer evento anual en colaboración con Hartnell College e Hijos del Sol Arts Productions. La celebración tuvo lugar la noche del 2 de noviembre en la Plaza y el Centro Estudiantil del Colegio Hartnell en Salinas. Más de 600 miembros de la comunidad estuvieron presentes para disfrutar de antojitos tradicionales, recorrer la feria de recursos y admirar más de una docena de altares creados por miembros de la comunidad y organizaciones locales. Hijos del Sol Arts Productions creó un altar comunitario, permitiendo a nuestros invitados contribuir con sus ofrendas de manera colectiva.

El evento incluyó una procesión liderada por el trío musical Sol de México a través de la Plaza del Colegio Hartnell. Se animó a los participantes a vestirse con trajes que representaran a personas admiradas o seres queridos fallecidos, inmortalizándolos y honrándolos. Además, los amantes de la poesía disfrutaron de las "Calaveritas Literarias" inspiradas en imágenes icónicas como "La Catrina", que representa a la diosa Mictecacihuatl. Estas sátiras poéticas, presentadas por el poeta local José Alejandro Morán, añadieron un toque de humor e ingenio. Los participantes también pudieron disfrutar de la "Danza de los Viejitos" con Los Lupeños de San José, una danza folklórica con el grupo Faldas y Flores: Folklore Mexicano, y música en vivo a cargo del Mariachi Hermanos Muratalla. En general, la noche estuvo marcada por coloridas tradiciones, recuerdos y maravillosas presentaciones.

TREE OF LIFE

Durante 39 años, Hospice Giving Foundation ha invitado a la gente del condado de Monterey a celebrar el evento Tree of Life (Árbol de la Vida). El programa está diseñado para recordar a aquellos a quienes deseamos mantener en nuestros corazones, especialmente durante las festividades. Nuestros amigos en el Portola Hotel & Spa han sido anfitriones del evento durante años, mientras que el Marriott alberga el árbol de Hospice Giving Foundation, fácilmente visible desde la azotea en el centro de Monterey. Al final del programa, el árbol se ilumina y es un hermoso recordatorio de nuestros seres queridos durante todo el mes de diciembre. Este año, tuvimos la suerte de darle la bienvenida nuevamente al Coro de la escuela Carmel High en su noveno año como intérpretes. Tom Lehmkuhl y el coro dejaron a nuestros invitados de pie aplaudiendo con escalofríos en los brazos. Además, Carlos Tottress y miembros del Coro de CSUMB dieron inicio a nuestra noche con una animada actuación que hizo que nuestros invitados bailaran en celebración. Nuestros nuevos invitados artistas fueron los McMonarch's, un grupo celta local dirigido por John Weed. Su música instrumental le dio un nuevo ambiente al evento, abriendo las posibilidades de cómo podrían lucir los próximos 40 años.

Un inmenso agradecimiento a todos los artistas, voluntarios y a todos los que hicieron de este evento un hermoso momento de recuerdo para los miembros de la comunidad que honran a sus seres queridos que ya no están en el mundo físico.
