POSTHARVEST DIRECTORY 2021

The pandemic

At the time of writing these lines for the previous edition, we were in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, with varying degrees of confinement and difficulties in relations between the two. The food industry had already shown itself to be up to the task of keeping society supplied, a task in which both producers and the ancillary industry are involved. In relation to the latter, some sectors with high demands, such as everything that had (and has) to do with disinfection and sanitisation, have allowed a significant growth in the business of these companies. Others, such as packaging, especially consumer packaging, with a revival of the demand for products that were not in bulk, as a barrier against agents whose mode of transmission was doubted even by the WHO, the world's largest health authority, for several months. Harvesting has always been a critical point in production and these difficulties have been more evident in some crops. Unfortunate episodes showed that the poor living conditions of the facilities used by the pickers favoured the transmission of the virus. On the positive side, it will now be difficult for the fruit and vegetable industry to accept companies that do not provide decent conditions for their seasonal workers. conditions for their seasonal workers. These are a health as well as a commercial necessity. Consumers are sensitive to images that show labour shantyism, and supermarkets, the conveyor belt of these sensitivities, will no longer be attentive only to the residues that may or may not be present in the products we eat and aspects linked to environmental care, but also to the living conditions of those who have made this production possible, both at the level of the tasks during cultivation and the sewing and subsequent operations. ons during cultivation as well as harvesting and subsequent operations. Good agricultural practices do not only focus on the products, but also on the people, on the well-being of the workers, says the GRASP Certification of Global GAP. The grief over the deaths of Covid-19 sufferers and their families will at least serve to ensure that, as happened during the industrial revolution, there will be improvements in the living conditions of workers. This period has taught us how to work at home and to alleviate the encounters with virtual options. We have all become proficient in the use of Zoom and its variations, including the numerous webinars, initially marathon and increasingly shorter in duration.

after 15 months

For our part, we organise the "Talks in the Library" on Tuesdays at 16.30 (information is in the Horticulture Library Agenda). The Postharvest Course we held at the UPV was this year in an online version. All analysts agree that the return to normality will not mean a return to square one. Much will remain of all this. The same is true of e-commerce, which is said to have advanced in this time what was planned for four years. Medical research, in which laboratories normally dedicated to other sectors have also been involved, has been the great protagonist. It was able to generate vaccines in record time, thanks to which the dramatic figures shown on television day after day have been reduced, in what seems to be the light at the end of the tunnel. After countless changes in the agendas of trade fairs, non-virtual meetings are once again becoming a reality. A week ago we were in Bilbao at what was for us the first faceto-face activity, Food4Future, 15 months after the last face-to-face meeting, the meeting organised by Anecoop in March 2020 in Murcia. Many events are scheduled for September, delayed with respect to their usual dates, and others such as Fruit Attraction or Fruit Logistica have kept their usual times, autumn and winter, and are now in the autumn and winter. tual autumn and winter, respectively. The seed companies already have their trial fields ready for the summer demonstrations. What happens in the HN summer will be the big test - hopefully all these dates will be maintained and we will see each other again in a few weeks' time! And hopefully this pandemic control that some regions are already experiencing will spread quickly to the rest of the world. June 2021

SmartFreshTM, the technology to control ethylene AgroFresh’s SmartFresh™ technology helps to achieve constant production, saving energy and improving storage systems, meeting customer expectations. The active ingredient in the technology is 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP), similar to ethylene, the natural hormone that makes fruits ripen. SmartFresh™ interacts with ethylene sensitive areas in fruit to manage their response to internal and external sources of ethylene. This puts the ripening process “on hold” so that softening and over-ripening occur much more slowly. 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) is a postharvest treatment that has been used in Spain since 2006 to maintain the quality of climacteric fruit throughout the preservation process.

Productos Citrosol X3 NEBULIZER + GLOCUAT PC

Effective disinfecting has never been so easy and cheap as nowadays

The winning combination that CITROSOL has developed: the X3 Nebulizer mobile unit together with Glocuat PC, a “ready to use” biocidal disinfectant. The nebulizer mist behaves like a gas that can reach any area or surface in the packinghouse, and on contact with walls or objects it becomes a liquid with practically total fungicidal/bactericidal effectiveness. The mobile unit allows the introduction of sequential C+D (cleaning+disinfection) programs in all rooms and areas in the packinghouse, with very low structural costs.

greenhouse gases (CO2, CO, etc. ) during this process is, as a consequence, also lower.

DRENCH ON LINE

A new system for on-line application of fungicides which reduces treatment variability by keeping the concentration of fungicide constant

CITROSOL A S UE

CITROSOL has developed a complete line of citrus covering waxes that is also effective at much lower drying temperatures This low drying temperature wax allows energy savings of 60-70% compared to traditional waxes. The amount of energy needed for drying the wax is therefore reduced. Emission of

This fungicide application system is very superior to other systems presently used in pre-grading – both pools and on-line systems. It reduces treatment variability and keeps constant fungicide concentration. Besides, consumption of those agrochemicals is sharply reduced. It includes our technology ZERO SPILLAGE SYSTEM®.

Fortisol® Ca has proven effectiveness in reduction and control of postharvest discolouration and in decay control. Fortisol® Ca PLUS has an enhanced efficiency in decay control. Both phytofortifiers are effective in controlling postharvest decay and rind breakdown.

disinfection and surface disinfection of cold stores

CITROSOL ZERO SPILLAGE SYSTEM®

Is the first industrial system that has a maximal efficiency and homogenity in controlling rot and decay It keeps the fungicide mixture in the drencher and deposit unchanged, allowing its continuous recycling and obtaining a constant efficiency in the treatment. At the same time, the need to treat surplus mixes is avoided, because their composition remains unchanged. The mixes can be recycled and used again during the whole citrus harvesting season.

SPE3, s.l. - www.bibliotecahorticultura.com

FUMISPORE® has excellent efficiencies in environmental disinfection and surface disinfection of cold stores and several items of packinghouses, including machinery, as it is not corrosive or toxic, neither for humans or the environment (the security time is 4 hours). The combination active substance + ignition system can achieve high biocide efficiencies in any area due the high diffusion of the produced gas. Its efficacy in disinfecting field boxes and bins is also particularly high and relevant.

Furthermore, ISOLCELL supplies complete solutions for the realization of controlled atmosphere normal refrigerated and low temperature rooms, including sandwich panels, gastight doors, impermeabilization and cooling plant. DCA, an exclusive Isolcell product

Scald control without postharvest chemical treatments

In the industry sector of the storage of apples and pears, a new technology called “DCA-CF Conservation” (Dynamic Controlled Atmosphere with the use of chlorophyll sensors) is being increasingly used.

The system, patented by the Government of Canada and developed by Dr. Angelo Zanella, is distributed throughout Europe exclusively by ISOLCELL SpA. This method replaces the static conservation parameters with dynamic ones resulting from the response given by the fruit itself. It uses a special sensor that measures the fluorescence emitted by apples and pears, thereby identifying the minimum threshold of oxygen tolerated by the fruit. The AC conservation takes place at a value slightly above that threshold, dynamically adjusted throughout the storage period. By lowering the level of oxygen in the storage chambers, internal metabolic activity is drastically reduced, which results in a better maintenance of internal and external characteristics defining product quality. Using this technology, ISOLCELL meets the growing consumer´s demand requiring produce free of chemical residues. Another advantage of DCA is the drastic reduction of internal browning in varieties like Granny, Braeburn, Pink Lady and Fuji. And also the exclusion of drencher as post-harvest treatment to apply antioxidants, significantly reduces the percentage of rotten fruits in storage. Due to this experience and to the close cooperation between research institutes, technology companies and customers, ISOLCELL has demonstrated once again to be at the forefront of fruit storage technology. This new storage technology is used with commercial purposes since 2003 and its use is extending rapidly overseas. The graph shows the development of DCA cameras in the last 7 years in Italy (blue), other countries (gray) and the sum of both values(green)...

Its products are: “Vacuum Coolers” or vacuum precoolers, refrigeration chambers for cooling and storage, control and automation systems, and services related to refrigeration: chamber sizing, upgrading of existing chambers, design, construction and installation of refrigeration equipment; legal questions.

The vacuum cooler brings the product to the optimum storage temperature in less than half an hour. Cooling speed is very important today, due to the commercial dissemination of fresh cut presentation for fruit and vegetables and increasing demand for fresh produce throughout the year. This implies production of the same vegetable species in different climates according to season and also to displace the location of produce handling facilities. The shelf life of the product becomes an essential aspect for companies engaged in international trade of horticultural products. The faster a low temperature is achieved, longer is the average shelf life of the produce.

The largest vacuum cooler facility in Europe

Vacuum Cooler Vacuum Cooler is the most effective way to cool leafy vegetables such as lettuce Iceberg, Romaine, Batavia, Trocadero, chicory, cabbage, endive, or spinach. It also cools mushrooms, flowers, strawberries, etc. Cooling time is less than 25 minutes; equipment with capacity ranging from one to thirty pallets is available, also with vacuum coolers with capacities between 7-150 m3.

Moelco, as a specialist in vacuum coolers, has build the largest facility of this kind in Europe for Urcisol Group, located in Murcia, Spain. With a turnover capacity of 60 pallets/hour, the facility processes and trades 800.000 lettuce units a day, keeping the highest quality for each one unit.

PACKINGHOUSE MACHINERY - PHD 2021

Is it better to have aesthetically pleasing fruit with a mediocre taste, or is it better to have good fruit that does not look good? Unfortunately, this dilemma continues to be debated thinking that one has to choose between these two worlds, which actually go together in that a fruit that does not look attractive enough is not bought and, in parallel, a fruit that looks good enough but is not good enough is not bought again. For many years we have invested in varietal research seeking aesthetically beautiful and colorful fruits, but we have completely neglected their flavor. However, today there is a need to combine the ‘beautiful’ with the ‘good’. A much more intimate aspect of quality selection is emerging, namely the tendency to look inside the fruit. This is a tendency that increasingly pushes us to go deep, under the skin, to strip the fruit of its outer layer and investigate its inner characteristics. The aim is always to eliminate what is not good, not just by looking at ‘beauty’, but by focusing on the taste expectations of individual consumers who are looking for a specific taste when they buy a certain product. For years UNITEC has been engaged in intense Research & Development work to fine-tune technologies capable of providing real answers to this emerging need. The latter has now become necessary in order not to disappoint the expectations of the final consumers, who are the true and only Customers and for whom the entire fruit and vegetable chain should put all its efforts, to create full satisfaction for them. Research and innovation, in fact, have always accompanied UNITEC on its journey towards excellence with the aim of achieving Results for Customers all over the world.

Attention to the needs of the market and the search for solutions to increase the efficiency and reduce the costs of fruit as well as vegetable processing are the basis of its mission. In fact, UNITEC offers intelligent and automatic technological solutions for all product sorting stages, from emptying to packing, including final box sorting and automatic palletizing, passing through an efficient and precise quality selection. This is thanks to vision systems, developed internally by the Research and Development Team, which allow to have a product that is characterized by homogeneous quality within each single package and uniformity between one delivery and the next. Each step is characterized by high efficiency, extreme delicacy and technological value, and quality selection is at the heart of the whole process. UNITEC innovation has never been an end in itself but has always been driven by the desire to give real answers to real market needs, through a strong specialization. UNITEC technologies, in fact, are highly specialized and dedicated to sorting and selecting internal and external quality of different varieties of fruits such as apples, pears, cherries, apricots, blueberries, plums, peaches, nectarines, melons, tomatoes, etc. In total there are more than 35 types of fruits for which UNITEC has designed and built dedicated technologies, giving a real and strong contribution to developing the business of these products in over 65 countries worldwide. And today, the results of this innovation have reached a very advanced level. On the one hand, the technologies that UNITEC has developed for the selection of external quality (dedicated to the different varieties and types of fruits) are fundamental because, by selecting fruits by size, color, shape, external defects etc., they are able to attract the consumer when buying

it for the first time. On the other hand, UNITEC technologies of the UNIQ range, dedicated to the selection of internal quality, give answers to those who have chosen to give value to taste and are able to distinguish the aspects related to the different internal qualities of the fruits.

These include the Cherry Vision 3.0 and UNIQ Cherry vision systems dedicated to cherries, Peach Vision 3 and UNIQ Peach dedicated to peaches, nectarines and flat peaches, Plum Vision 3 and UNIQ Plum for plums and Apricot Vision 3 dedicated to apricots. And again Kiwi Vision 3 and UNIQ Kiwi for yellow and green kiwi, Blueberry Vision 3 dedicated to blueberries and, finally, Lemon Vision 3, Mandarin Vision 3 and Orange Vision 3 for citrus fruit. These are just some of the technologies for external as well as internal quality selection, entirely designed and manufactured by UNITEC. One for each variety of fruit.

sumer is guaranteed fruits with a goodness consistent with his or her expectations.

This is how confidence is generated in the consumer who will be led to re-purchase, with a consequent increase in fruit and vegetable consumption and real benefits for the entire fruit and vegetable chain.

UNIQ internal quality selection systems also have the ability to look at other very important aspects within the fruit besides taste/sweetness because they can give an additional and very important contribution by detecting the characteristics of ripeness and dry matter for each fruit, for example. All these aspects ensure that the final con-

The unique design of the cutting heads considerably facilitates the changing of blades, handling and cleaning. The patented cutting head technology, fitting on most common centrifugal cutting machines, guarantees a consistent slice and shred thickness throughout the slicing process. The product can be cut into a variety of shapes: both slices (flat cut, crinkle cut and V-shaped ) and strips ( V-shaped, oval, julienne and wide ribbon cut) are available.

Our corporate history started in 1960, and the Flexible Packaging Film Department’s main product was the so-called “stitched bag”, which was highly appreciated by the textile sector. But the company artfully entered other market niches too. Capp Plast’s typical trait over the years was its skill to anticipate its clients’ production needs by managing investments and innovation, rationalising production, extending corporate activity with the Injection Department to produce large polyethylene storage units and pallets, and with the Bottles Department for the cosmetics, chemical and pharmaceutical industry. The company’s transparent, absorbing history unfolds keeping abreast with the times. Inspired by the philosophy “problem elimination through prevention”, we invest in quality and systematic organisation of corporate processes, attempting to meet customer demands in the three reference production sectors – storage units, bottles and flexible packaging.

PAC LIFE Nueva Central Nº 4431 CONCHALI - CHILE Tel.: +56-2-2820 0400 infopac@envasespaclife.com www.envasespaclife.com PAC LIFE manufactures a new generation of packaging films, with high permeability, for the conservation of fruits, vegetables and ornamentals. It is active packaging, that is interacting with the products inside the bag, managing to change the internal atmosphere, increasing the life of fresh fruits and vegetables, which has irrefutably demonstrated in the last export seasons by the Chilean fruit industry. After the sealing of the PAC LIFE bag, the fruit or vegetable continues to breathe, lowering the concentration of oxygen and increasing carbon dioxide within it. Thus, an atmosphere of equilibrium is achieved inside the container, extending the life of the product, while maintaining its flavor and organoleptic characteristics. The before technology, characterized by the high permeability of our bags, with plastic adapted to each species, is complemented with the addition of ethylene absorbers in the polymer matrix, to avoid the action of this hormone, that catalizes the senescence and maturation of fruits and vegetables.

We are also interested in modern food, convenience: convenience foods, convenience foods, processed and easy-to-eat foods, as well as plant-based and functional foods. Modern food is of interest to all generations of consumers. Today’s food categories promote enthusiasm and creativity among new chefs and also among catering suppliers for fusion cuisine. We have a section called Ideas- Con; the leisure and business of gourmets; eating healthy, good and cooking fast. It contains ideas and recipes. PARTICIPATE !!! The marketing of a modern horticulture for the 21st century, ACTUAL FruVeg is about the ethics and sustainability of the Agenda 2030 for a supply chain specialising in #HealthyFood. ACTUAL FruVeg is also committed to contributing to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs.
