The Horsewoman

The Horsewoman, a novel by James Patterson and Mike lupica, is about three generations of horsewomen, the atwoods: grandmother caroline, daughter Maggie, and granddaughter becky Mccabe, who have a stable of show jumping horses in Wellington, florida

Maggie has long held ambitions for the olympics, but at the beginning of the book, she has an accident on a trail ride on her show jumper coronado evidently the horse was spooked by a fox (really? fox hunters know better), rears and falls on Maggie, doing serious damage to her pelvis and knee the horse runs back to the barn riderless, but becky decides she will ride coronado back on the trail because he will take her to her mother (seriously? this is not lassie and timmy ) of course, the horse does, and becky finds her mother unconscious, calls 911, and her mother is taken to the hospital where she undergoes surgery

While the mother is recovering, daugh ter becky exercises her mother ’s horse coronado along with her own show jumper, sky.

becky’s coach, Daniel ortega (Editor ’ s note: not to be confused with José Daniel ortega, former President of nicaragua ) is Mexican by birth, where his parents still reside, but he has Daca (Deferred action for childhood arrivals) status in the u s and is regularly in fear of Ice (Immigra tion and customs enforcement) deporting him

Maggie’s coach, gus bennett, was headed to the olympics in 2008 when a show jumping accident (fall) paralyzed him and curtailed his ever riding again, so he now gets around (quite well) in a

wheelchair he is a stereotypical grumpy, strict, abrasive coach, who we find out later also has a romantic side another stereotypical character is steve gorton, the rich co owner of coronado who is egotistical, self serving, brash, and manipulative only out to make money and get his way however he can the novel is written on a young adult reading level, maybe targeting the “text and tweet” readers, but I would not rec ommend it for readers ages 12 18 the characters’ dialog and the narrative are rife with unnecessary profanity and there is heavy consumption of alcoholic bever ages Most of the characters’ dialog is spent bickering with each other, as they are competitive and self serving, and their only ambition in life is to win I hate to say it, but the plot of this book is three legged lame, although the authors do interject plenty of ups and downs so that it’s not all smooth sailing for the at wood women to get to the olympics Just when things seem to be going well in the horse show arena for becky and Maggie,

“something” happens (described in the book by an idiomatic expression involv ing manure) It might be a wrong distance to a jump, a refusal, or a fall or the horse has cellulitis and the at wood women call the veterinarian, Doc howser, who won’t know the prognosis until the lab reports come back When they do, Doc howser makes a special trip to the gym where Maggie and becky are work ing out to tell them that the horse will be fine (Do you know a veterinarian who does that?)

the two redeeming characters are Daniel ortega and becky’s Dad, who is a clever new york lawyer becky’s parents are divorced, and her Dad shows up as a deus ex machina to save ortega from jail and deportation by the stereotypical Ice officers, who are decidedly prejudiced against people of Mexican origin.

Despite all the falls and pitfalls, the mother and daughter both make it to the Paris olympics on the u.s. show Jump ing team with their two horses coronado and sky

the denouement, “Paris,” is almost su perfluous since the two women have achieved their goal What remains to be

achieved is an olympic gold Medal twice in the last chapter the authors have becky think, “Maybe this is the way the story is supposed to end ” Maybe the au thors should have taken their character ’s thoughts to heart

this novel paints a negative image of grand Prix and olympic show jumping riders the riders that I know, while they are competitive, are not petty, selfish, and backbiting like the characters in this book they are far more amenable and helpful with their fellow riders, and are horsemen and horsewomen, who take care of the whole horse this novel should more ac curately be titled “the riders” since Mag gie and becky only ride their horses, while their grooms bring their horses to them al ready tacked and ready to ride, as well as take care of their horses after their rides It’s the grooms and the two trainers who are the horsemen

an excellent example of a real life olympic show jumping gold medalist who is a true horsewoman is Melanie smith taylor, who still continues educating her self and others about horse care and train ing check out her book, Riding with Life: Lessons from the Horse

J is for Justify

J Is For Justify, by lesley a.J. bau mann, is an author illustrated children’s alphabet book that is equal parts pic tures and text. colorful illustrations of 26 famous, and not so famous, thor oughbred race horses, from american Pharoah to Zenyatta, run across a full page, opposite a page with poetry about each horse’s history the illustrations are baumann’s detailed horse drawings, and the colorful background patterns are de rived from the jockey’s silks anecdotes about the horses include de tails about 2018 Kentucky Derby winner Justify’s knack for achieving impossible goals; rachel alexandra’s ability to out run the boys; and the fact that secretariat’s heart was twice as large as that of a nor mal horse there are details about the horses’ birthdays and which ones won the Kentucky Derby and triple crown how did bauman come to publish this book? sometimes an idea ruminates for a while before seeing the light of day. bau man’s idea to write and illustrate a book was her companion for many years but what would be the topic? she tells of fold ing a piece of paper and writing all the al phabet letters on it, but “I don’t think I can think of thoroughbred names for all the letters,” she told herself “When I did (think of all the names), then I researched the jockey silks, colors, etc ” at that point lesley just started, and J is for Justify be came the name of that book

With a degree in graphic Design, bau mandeviated from her usual media and created all the images with her iPad. her 20 years as a graphic designer and time spent working for a book printer during college gave her all the tools she would need plus the apple Pencil, which she describes as a breakthrough for computer drawing she would learn the other skills needed by a self published author along the journey

the 26 digitally created images of run ning horses become a motion picture when you flip quickly through the pages see that action and find more about the book at: https://jisforjustify com/

Its timely publication in May 2019, right after Justify won the triple crown, earned it a place on the shelves at race track gift shops, such as Keeneland the moment she first held the printed book in her hand it “felt brand new!” she said. “and to see my son lay on the floor and read it ” her thoughts trailed off to that sweet memory there will be more books to come. the next will likely be inspired by her saddle bred horse, clever but there are also more thoroughbred racing stories to discover.

Iroquois Steeplechase

the 81st running of the Iroquois stee plechase, at Percy Warner Park in nashville, tenn , was back on its regular date this year: the second saturday in May (14th), 2022 but plenty of sun and tem peratures around 90°f made racing a bit more difficult for the horses the turf course was in excellent condition, main tained by Dwight hall and his crew the main race of the day, the $150,000 calvin houghland Iroquois (gr 1) was moved up to the fourth race and race meet ended with the sixth race, the Mason houghland Memorial timber race. both were the longest races of the day at three miles

this year ’s Iroquois winner was also last year ’s winner: snap Decision, trained by Jack fisher with graham Watters the jockey. nicky henderson trained Pistol Whipped (Ire), ridden by nicolai De boinville, had led from the start of the race, and snap Decision ran a close sec ond to him most of the way at the 13th jump, Watters made his move with snap Decision, overtook Pistol Whipped, and was leading by six lengths coming to the last fence he finished by seven lengths ahead of the pack that left De boinville riding the second placed horse (Pistol Whipped) and the cyril Murphy trained amschel (gb), ridden by barry foley, was third [amschel was second to snap Decision in 2021]

at the winner ’s area, trainer Jack fisher, jockey graham Watters, and the owners at bruton street us all termed snap Decision their “horse of a lifetime ” Jack fisher “had a plan and the jockey ex ecuted it perfectly.” Watters said he rode the horse a little more forward this year than last year and he challenged Pistol Whipped all the way.

“he was tired at the end; 16 fences going three miles in 90 degree heat with all this humidity,” Watters said. “he was tired, but less tired than those behind him ” snap Decision won a $90,000 purse for his efforts

local owners leiper ’s fork steeple chasers got off to a winning start at this year ’s Iroquois, as their horse fast vision, trained by leslie young and ridden by harrison beswick, won a $15,000 purse in the first race by 7½ lengths, the $25,000 bright hour

Jack fisher trained and bruton street us’ entry Proven Innocent gave fisher his first win of the day in the second race, the $40,000 george sloan and John sloan Maiden hurdle, taking a $24,000 purse, with the owner ’s son, connor hankin in

racing/steeplechasing

the irons. graham Watters’ mount bickley, another Jack fisher trained horse, owned by Mrs s K Johnson, Jr , was second following the second race, the stick horse flat race drew enough young com petitors to fill three heats lots of parents and photographers crowded the finish line to snap photos of the determined racers

In the third race, the $75,000 green Pastures novice hurdle, Irvin naylor ’s Irish bred six year old scorpion’s re venge, trained by cyril Murphy and rid den by barry foley, was not only the best turned out horse in this race, but also the first place winner of a $45,000 purse following the fourth race, the Iroquois, it was time for the females to take the course in the $50,000 Margaret currey henley filly & Mare hurdle Down royal won the race for trainer Kate Dalton and husband jockey bernard Dalton this win marked Dalton’s 100th victory in his 18 year national steeplechase association career. called “Princess” at the barn, she was a solid second to the Mean queen in last year ’s filly & Mare stakes following the mares and before the timber race, huntsman charles Mont gomery, Mfh and Whippers In paraded the Mells foxhounds down the course and in front of the 25,000 spectators the Mason houghland Memorial tim ber race was the last race of the day and, in more than the others, the heat seemed to take its toll on the horses Winner Monbeg stream skipped the winning photos to get extra time being cooled off by veterinari ans and volunteers the pace setter, cho sen Mate, fell at the 15th fence, but was not injured, and horses notjudginjustsayin and Western crusader were pulled up the course was run on a new timber course, installed earlier this year and do nated by leiper ’s fork steeplechasers owners, Mark george and Mark McMil lan, in honor of his father brown McMil lan, who was a long time supporter of the Iroquois steeplechase the new timber course features posts and rails that are

safer for horses and riders

Cooling Horses at the Steeplechase

Dr Monty McInturff and his team of veterinarians at tennessee equine hospi tal, thompson’s station, tenn , have been volunteering as the official veterinarians for the Iroquois steeplechase for 31 years, since 1991 they do the pre race veteri nary checks and are on hand at various stations around the course on race day for any equine emergency they have cooling stations set up at the finish line and on the walkway between the stable and the track with ice, water hoses and water troughs one of Dr McInturff ’s creative innova tions is the “ice necklace” that the steeple chase horses wear after the race to help them cool down they are shoulder length veterinary exam gloves that are filled with ice, tied together, and draped across the horse’s shoulders to help cool them as they walk back to the barn they can also be placed on the jugular vein to quickly cool the body In addition, the horses get hosed by multiple people, as well as have buck ets of cool water poured on them Dr McInturff was pleased to report that there were no race day injuries to the horses another cooling feature at the Iroquois

steeplechase are the misting fans provided by Wallace trailers. With sunny skies and temperatures hovering around 90°f, it was tempting to spend the majority of my time between races standing in front of them noticing that I was spending quite a bit of time by the misting fans, guy Wallace came up to me and jokingly said, “the first two minutes are free, but we charge after that ” then he invited me into one of his latest trailer offerings: a refrigerated trailer What a cool place to spend time at the steeplechase! but it was short lived as I couldn’t take photos from there

Mells Foxhounds Fun Show

Mells foxhounds held their “fun” horse show on May 7, 2022 at sugar valley farm in giles county, tennessee, which is one of Mells’ regular fixtures for fox hunt ing sponsored by Morton buildings, this horse show was not one of your run of the mill shows where everyone rides inside a perfectly manicured arena with engineered footing. It was the brainchild of clair Pin ney, Whipper In for Mells, who thought it would be fun to hold a show similar to the county horse shows that are held in her na tive england these types of county horse shows have been taking place in the british Isles for several hundred years and are attended by farmers, villagers, and roy alty alike

as in the english tradition, families and dogs were encouraged to attend In fact, dog races were a big part of the show there were terrier races and non terrier races, as well as lurcher (with 5 entries) and an open lurcher race, which was won by a poodle even though the dogs had

designated running lanes, not all stayed in side them and not all ran the correct direc tion even so, it was great fun for the dogs, their owners, and the spectators the final dog event was a parade class titled “the dog the judge would most like to take home,” judged by Mells’ huntsman charles Montgomery the winner was Wyatt, a bassett hound who is a blood pressure service dog on the equine side of the show, there were hunter and Jumper classes, with jumps provided by silver bay Jumps of Primm springs, tenn. the course was set in a grass field where the “arena” was marked off with ropes this type of “out on grass field” course is not only within the english county show tradition, but is much like the types of terrain found on a fox hunt. the weather was dry, with tem peratures in the mid 70s in the morning, but a mist came up in the afternoon mak ing course more of a challenge there were Mounted games, sponsored by u s Mounted games association (usMga), set up like a gymkhana, with

classes such as speed Weaver (bending), flag Moving, Mug Moving, and a sword lancer class all of these classes test the dexterity of horse and rider there was also a family class, a lead line class, and an award for best turned out rider, won by ron augman who was at tired in his u s Marine corps dress blue military uniform, fit for formal inspection

the “big class” was the Jumper stakes sponsored by bliss saddles with a $500 purse split between the first three stand ings In first place, taking home $250, was steph gollobin riding Mallory. steph hunts regularly with Mells clair said that Mells plans to hold an other fun show next spring, on May 6, 2023 which is also Kentucky Derby day

with many fascinating facts about course design for instance, did you know that while show jumping courses typically have a water jump, like a liverpool, you won’t see this in an eventing show jump ing round? this is because eventing horses are trained to jump into water for their cross country rounds, which would inter fere with trying to get them to jump com pletely over a water obstacle during a show jumping round In addition, steve had participants count out strides as they walked distances between fences, and he answered questions about his course de sign

It was a wonderful Kentucky saturday, as bouts of both sun and rain traveled across the bluegrass lauren nicholson’s vermiculus and James alliston’s Paper Jam were withdrawn prior to cross coun try, which left a field of 43 five* riders to leave the start box this year ’s course was, again, designed by Derek di grazia, who created this course with the goal of getting both rider and horse to think on their feet optimum time was 11 minutes 4 seconds, over 28 fences as the competitors stormed the course, one would never know that this was Jung’s horse’s first time navigating a 5* track he didn’t bat an eye, coming home with no jump penalties, and a whopping eleven seconds under the time sarah bullimore picked up a 20 penalties on course, which took her out of the leaderboard, allowing boyd Martin to rise to the second place spot after a clear round third place after dressage, buck Davidson counted 10 time penalties, knocking him into fourth behind yasmin Ingham, now in third the 4* riders tackled a different, yet equally difficult Derek di grazia course overnight leader Doug Payne fell victim to the coffin element and was eliminated with a rider fall colleen loach ran into trouble early in the course: after picking up a refusal and breaking a frangible pin, she decided to retire vermont olympian Phillip Dutton went clear, with 6 4 time

penalties, to catapult him into third place liz halliday sharp rode foot perfect, only adding 4 time penalties, which brought her into second place with cooley quicksil ver Dan Kreitl went double clear to bring him from eleventh to first place on car mango going into stadium jumping only three 5* riders completed the cross country course with no jumping penalties and finishing inside the time on the 4*, only one rider, Dan Kreitl, finished the course with no jumping penalties and was the only rider to make the time this year there were no rider injuries, but two horses required medical aid after sustaining injuries on the 5*course early dressage leader, tamra smith, retired on course after fleeceworks royal mis stepped and sustained an injury to her left front pastern she was transported to hag yard equine Medical Institute, where she underwent surgery; the procedure and re covery were both successful and the horse will recover. land rover first timer ash lynn Meuchel and her horse emporium fell at the head of the lake, when empo rium scrambled over a jump and got tan gled in his tack he was also transported to hagyard, where the horse improved and doctors are optimistic for a full recovery saturday’s cross country brought the largest crowd of 35,794 Stadium Jumping May 1 the 5* sunday morning jog was a nail biter, with two horses spun and three held

Jung had a comfortable lead of two rails between him (20 1) and second placed boyd Martin (29 3) but when Martin knocked two rails and added 1 2 time penalties to his score, it solidified Jung’s victory, and allowed yasmin Ingham and Doug Payne to move ahead of him into second and third place, respectively Payne rode a clear round, which brought him up from fifth into third (38 4) Ingham was only two seconds over time, but still landed in second place (31 7) in her first appearance at land rover Kentucky. to the roar of the crowd, Jung blasted away any doubt when he crossed the finish markers completely clear.

Badminton Cross Country

after a two year hiatus due to the pan demic, 110,000 people, at least 2,500 dogs on leashes, children, grandparents, and 75 competitors from eleven different coun tries gathered on May 7, 2022 at the Duke of beaufort’s badminton estate to watch the world’s top eventing horse and rider combinations take on the cross country course a long time wish of mine was ful filled, as my daughter cary and I arrived early that sunny morning to walk the course and get a good look at the huge jumps before the competition started some of the toughest jumps were the vic arage vee, a narrow angled jump over a ditch; the huntsman’s close: three brush jumps in the woods that had to be taken at a tight approach because of a tree and an gled all the way through; and the broken bridge: half a bridge, then a big ditch the early competitors, such as William fox Pitt, were already warming up their first rides of the day to ready them for the 570 meter per minute speed (21 mph) for 6,700 meters or 4 16 miles grooms for horses to be ridden later in the day were hand grazing their charges amidst the crowd of onlookers and their dogs, as early competitors walked through, headed to the warm up area

the first rider was off at 10:00 a m and we waited at jump 18, the laMieux leap, a combination of three elements, all down hill the jump required a half halt at the top of the hill to the stone wall, land and push the horse forward to a huge ditch, with the rider sitting back so that when they landed on the down side, he could queue the horse to take off halfway down a rise to the last element, a skinny wall with brush It wasn't just the size and width of the jumps, but also the terrain that made this a jump you cannot slow down

for. to stand next to the track as a 1200 pound horse gallops by is a heart stopping moment!

cheers rose from the spectators as the horse and rider cleared a jump, or the sick ening crack of timber, groan of anguish from the crowd, and silence if there was a fall nicola Wilson was an early casualty when her horse, J l Dublin hung a knee on jump #27 (a wicker basket jump following the Mars M combination) and rolled over the rider, injuring her back riders were held for 27 minutes while she was taken to the hospital and the jump was eventu ally removed from the course as it was deemed too damaged to repair nicola is recovering in a rehab unit and the horse was not seriously injured even the eventual winner, olympic gold Medalist laura collett, had a mo ment at the horse quest quarry she told a commentator about her horse, “he started to question my sanity, but never stopped even after the hold, and gave me all I needed ”

emily King’s horse, vailmy biats, hung a knee at the savills hay feeders, fell and rolled over her her horse jumped up with emily’s foot still caught in the stirrup and then stood quietly as jump officials ran to help horse and rider walked off of the course uninjured, likely thanks to the safety equipment that riders wear.

fifty nine horses finished the course out of 75 riders Many were retired by their

riders and 13 were eliminated on course for refusals or falls the water element saw many refusals and, interestingly, the last jump of the cross country course saw quite a few refusals, which reinforces that old saying to the rider, “always ride to the last jump,” applies even at this level. William fox Pitt on little fire, his second ride of the day, remarked to the tv com mentator, “the last jump looks like it is into the crowd and little fire asked, “Did I really want him to do that? but we had a go ” american tamara smith, who finished in the top ten, when asked by a tv re porter about how she felt said, “relief! I finally have finished this after a long time, as I’m not so young for this ” american Phillip Dutton finished on Z

in 26th place; Will faudee on Mama's Magic Way finished 31st; Matthew flynn on Wizard retired; lillian heard on lcb barnaby was eliminated on course; and emily hamel on corvett finished 52nd laura collett on london 52 nearly fin ished on her dressage score of 21, with only 0 4 time faults on the stadium, with a final score of 21 4 the lowest score ever at badminton she went clear on cross country even after a scary moment when she came into the quarry too fast, the horse hung a knee, and she nearly went out the side door

sunburned, tired, and wishing we could ride a horse like that just once, we made our way back to the car park and home, first enjoying a “99” from the Ice cream truck check one off of the bucket list!

Wes Lawson

the horse world lost another of its stal wart supporters on May 5, 2022 when We ston “Wes” galloway lawson, Jr passed away peacefully in his sleep after a lengthy battle with cancer he was 72

It is appropriate that Wes grew up on a horse farm his father, Weston g law son, ran rolling l ranch and stables training and boarding barn in bartlett, ten nessee I first met Wes when we were both about 11 years old at lawson’s stables, where my sister Melinda boarded her horse In fact, Melinda purchased her first horse from Wes’ dad on friday nights in the summer, the kids at the barn, includ ing Wes on his gaited horse named society boy, would hack up austin Peay highway to the raleigh saddle club shows they would hack back late at night trying to stay awake in the saddle

Wes and rose Marie were regular at tendees at the germantown charity horse show ball because that’s where Wes pro posed to rose Marie, and she finally ac cepted, after he persistently asked her about ten times Wes was rose Marie’s older brother ’s best friend when they were teenagers rose Marie said that Wes spent as much time at her house as he did at his own, but she did not much like him back

then her description was that she was a little proper and he was a little wild her story is that one evening after Wes got out of the navy (where he served as an aircraft mechanic on the uss Intrepid, 1968 1974) her brother asked Wes over to his house for dinner and her sister in law in vited rose Marie; but neither knew the other was coming to dinner after that, they started dating rose Marie went back to college in california, but Wes kept writ ing her letters and sending her flowers and pictures of him holding her horse.

In 1976 Wes and rose Marie married, and in 1977 together they started oak view stables (ovs) in germantown, tn. they later moved the business to olive branch, Ms, but the property was not even

on the market. they literally knocked on the farmer ’s door and asked him if he wanted to sell the farmer said, “Mark off what you want and I’ll sell it to you.” oak view stables now encompasses 70 acres together with their sons Phillip and trey (who was only 5 years old at the time of purchase), they built the house, barn with arena, cleared and fenced the land rose Marie said that Wes could fix almost anything: plumbing, electrical, trucks, and farm equipment he also ran a horse trans port business, hauling horses all over north america

Wes never met a stranger and always had a joke or two to share nancy and I en

joyed covering the ovs shows when Wes was announcing because he always brought humor to the mundane task of an nouncing riders’ and horses’ names. she noted some of Wes’ humor in an article about one of the shows: “announcing the rider and horse, over the rainbow, Wes commented ‘that’s where bluebirds fly ’ another time, he held up his walking cane and asked me, ‘What is this?’ I wasn’t sure, so he replied, ‘raisin’ cane!’ [groan]”

Wes became a friend, father, uncle, or grandfather figure to many Wes was al ways helping others, even in death, as he donated his body to the university of tn health science center for research

On the trail

Timber Ridge

this month I spent time riding in big south fork national Park on the cumber land Plateau I stayed at timber ridge horse campground in Jamestown, tenn for several days and rode the diverse set of trails they offer there timber ridge has been around for many years and has been a mainstay for big south fork trail riders as a matter of fact, it’s where I got my start as a trail/obstacle clinician so many years ago today, the campground still maintains its horse obstacle course in the forest alongside the grounds this facility has a cozy feel and inti mate atmosphere with its two horse barns right in the center of the horseshoe shaped camping area this layout makes it super easy to step outside your camper door and see your horse anytime the amenities of timber ridge are on par with most campgrounds, including 24 pull through and back in sites with water and electric hookups plus a dump station, and each campsite is equipped with a pic nic table and fire ring for those who do not have living quarters, there are three rustic cabins that are heated and cooled, each with their own porch and there’s a full kitchen and dining hall with propane grills, a shower house, and Wi fi. for the horses there are two barns with lights and water, fifty 10x10 stalls, eight corrals, several turnouts, two wash bays, and several hitching rails conveniently lo cated throughout the grounds something

I especially appreciate is that they sell shavings, hay, firewood, and ice on site. I always prefer this over hauling everything with me

timber ridge has some of the best rid ing in tennessee, too there are four trail heads that lead out of the campground giving you direct access to over 200 miles of riding on big south fork national Park trails and twenty five miles of privately owned trails on rtta (ridge toppers trail association) property

While there are many sights to see in big south fork, the closest trail destina tion and one of my favorites in the heat of the summer is hippy cave, located just a couple of miles from the campground hippy cave is a hidden gem with a rock overhang in the bottom of a forested valley and is a natural wonder with waterfalls in the rainy season While you cannot ride your horse into the protected area, the park service has provided hitching rails to tie to and a short path to hike into the area another trail that makes timber ridge

so popular is the rtta trail, a privately owned and groomed trail of the ridge top trail association adjacent to timber ridge campground. one of my favorite destinations on this path is bear cave this rock overhang is situated in the bend of a crystal clear stream and offers riders the opportunity to tie their horses to a high line and rest at the picnic table in a natural amphitheater of green grass, rock walls, and the sounds of the nearby babbling stream the terrain on these two trails is a mixture of sandy soil, sandstone, and the occasional gravel bed brought in to pre vent erosion some areas can be muddy during the wet season and there are areas where erosion has taken its toll on the landscape, creating step downs and ditches; but both trails are well maintained and marked with plenty of signage and the big south fork trails have posted numbers along the way so that you can give your exact location in case of emergency there are trails available to suit any level of rider, so be sure to ask for a map when you check in at the office

I have so many great memories of my time in big south fork, memories of rid ing good horses with great friends through some of the most breathtaking views and overlooks in tennessee, to playing a guitar and singing songs around a campfire some of my most cherished memories have been made at timber ridge horse campground for information on ten nessee trail destinations, visit Josh’s online

round rock, texas on april 29 30, 2022 the southeastern livestock Pavilion in ocala, fl played host to 33 trainers and formerly wild horses competing in the 2022 extreme Mustang Makeover, a pro duction of the Mustang heritage founda tion. trainers picked up their assigned horses in early January and began their 100 day journey to the show ring by gen tling and training a previously untouched Mustang before competing for their shot at over $40,000 in cash and prizes before competing, applicants com pleted an extensive selection process, which evidences their training prowess and equine knowledge as an extreme Mustang Makeover participant, these ded icated trainers help to further the Mustang heritage foundation’s mission of helping Mustangs find permanent placement in loving homes their participation in the competition also demonstrates the versa tility, athleticism, and trainability of the american Mustang, which increases pub lic awareness and encourages others to consider adopting a Mustang the ocala youth Division competitors were paired with yearlings from nevada hMas (herd Management areas) and were tasked with training the youngsters

to hold their own during the in hand com petition in april the adult Division horses, all 3 to 4 year olds also from nevada herds, were started and shown under saddle at the april competition.

youth competitors compete in handling, trail, and freestyle classes, allowing them to showcase how their partnerships have evolved throughout the 100 day journey adult competitors show in a handling class, a pattern class, and a trail class to

determine who advances to the finals the exhibitors with the top ten combined scores from those first three classes then complete a brief compulsory pattern and a freestyle routine created by the competi tor. the combined score of the compulsory pattern and freestyle routine determines the extreme Mustang Makeover cham pion

Greener (Bluegrass) pastures A Tour in the Bluegrass

this year the american horse Publica tions (ahP) annual conference was held in the “heart of the bluegrass” and horse mecca: lexington, Kentucky on May 12 14, 2022. titled “back to the bluegrass,” the first day offered a “bluegrass state of Mind tour of lexington” that encom passed five iconic places in the area: Keeneland race course, Kentucky equine sports Medicine and rehabilitation cen ter (KesMarc), coolmore america’s ashford stud, hallway feeds, and rood & riddle equine hospital so on thurs day May 12, we boarded the coach at 7 a m eastern time and headed for breakfast at Keeneland race course Keeneland is truly a park like setting, with its beautifully landscaped grounds, and it is completely open to the public, as its founders intended it to be “a gathering place for all ” the track Kitchen is well known for its southern style breakfast, and it did not disappoint our tour guides loved sharing the track’s rich history and importance in thoroughbred racing several ahP mem bers recounted stories of their own horses having raced or gone through the sales

barn at Keeneland When we got off the coach after breakfast, we watched the or chestrated morning exercise of horses breezing on the track the gift shop was a strong magnet for most of the group, who found special treasures to take home soon we were whisked away to the Kentucky equine sports Medicine and rehabilitation center (KesMarc), a state of the art facility that serves a wide variety of equine athletes throughout the south We were asked not to photograph any horses at the center due to their strict confidentiality policy (a policy we would also encounter at rood & riddle equine hospital) the center proudly boasts of being an innovator in the use of hyperbaric chamber therapy for horses, which is still a rare treatment modality for horses next was coolmore america’s ashford stud, home to a who’s who list of thor oughbred stallions, including american Pharaoh, Justify, tiz the law, and 11 oth ers one after another, these stallions were paraded before us like handsome celebri ties on a red carpet the farm looked like an english manor estate with its perfectly manicured lawns, pastures, and flower beds notably missing? flies! not a one to be found, which is undoubtedly due to the

immaculately clean barns and fields the stud runs on a very predictable daily schedule, such that the stallions know when it’s their turn in the breeding shed or time for pasture turnout our empty stomachs eagerly boarded the coach for hallway feeds where, ap propriately, we were fed our box lunches the family run icon of the lexington horse world has a fully automated feed mixing and bagging facility that is clean enough to eat in I marveled at the effi ciency of their operation and the far flung places where they ship feed so that lex ington horses can have fresh hallway feeds when they travel our last stop was rood & riddle equine hospital, famous around the world

for their innovative veterinary care of horses the surgery suites each have a large picture window for tour groups to observe the surgical operations after sur gery, a recovery team helps the horses slowly and carefully awaken from anes thesia. the years of experience and knowl edge are evident in the calm, efficient way the horses are cared for the vast campus includes separate areas for horses, de pending on their diagnosis and treatment needed

It was a whirlwind day, given that each of these places could have easily been a half day tour as a first time attendee at an ahP conference, I had been told the tour is a must do It certainly surpassed my ex pectations by miles!

Sculpture of Secretariat

the World Premier of the only known full size steel statue of secre tariat, created by farrier and equine sculptor nigel fennell, was unveiled at the griffin gate Marriott hotel at the american horse Publications confer ence in May. It is a life size sculpture of the legendary racehorse with jockey ron turcotte, entitled “god’s boy 31 2 24 ” It is constructed of plasma laser cut individual mosaics of secretariat

nigel fennell worked as a farrier for 31 years then, three years ago fennell turned to building life size horse sculp tures

fennell’s latest sculpture pays hom age to the record breaking and awe in spiring performance by secretariat to seal his 1973 triple crown win and ce ment his legacy as a racing legend

In the 1973 belmont stakes, secre tariat literally ran away from the com petition, winning the longest leg of the triple crown by a distance of 31 lengths in a record 2 24 seconds, thus the title for the sculpture

engraved along the sculpture on either side of the horse’s head are iconic lines that were broadcast during secretariat’s

belmont race:

“secretariat is blazing along ” “he is moving like a tremendous ma chine!”
