May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time for reflection, connection, and action—a time to not only prioritize our own well-being but also to consider how we can uplift others. For me, this month carries a profound significance, as it intertwines with a deeply personal journey of love, loss, and resilience. It feels espe-

cially meaningful to honor one of the most beautiful and impactful forms of healing I know: equine-assisted therapy. Across the United States, these therapy centers—like the horses they work with—become anchors of hope and strength for countless individuals, including myself.

This issue is dedicated to my mother, the woman who made horses a cornerstone of my life. My earliest memories are filled with the rhythmic thud of hooves on dirt, the smell of hay on crisp mornings, and the quiet connection that exists when a horse meets your gaze. Horses were not just animals to us—they were family, teachers, and healers. My mother’s love for these incredible creatures shaped my childhood in more ways than I could ever articulate. They gave me joy, freedom, and an indescribable sense of peace. When I reflect on my life, I see that her shared love of horses wasn’t just a gift—it was a legacy, one that has sustained me through life’s most tumultuous moments.

Eight years ago, my mother suffered a catastrophic stroke. In an instant, our world was turned upside down. The woman who had always been my pillar of strength now had to summon unimaginable courage to face her own challenges.

It was devastating to watch her fight to

reclaim pieces of herself after the stroke.

And yet, through all the pain, she became an even greater teacher to me, modeling resilience, faith, and an unwavering determination to keep going, no matter how impossible the odds seemed.

This year, as her health began to decline further, I found myself drawn even closer to the lessons she unwittingly taught me. Life’s challenges came fast and hard, and there were moments when I felt overwhelmed by the weight of it all. But in those moments, I always found myself turning to the barn, to the horses that had been such an integral part of my upbringing. Sitting near them, listening to their breathing, feeling their warmth—there was a serenity there that nothing else could replicate. It was as if my mother’s love and strength were mirrored in their presence.

Horses have always been my sanctuary. They were the safe harbor during the storms of adolescence, the steady companions when life felt uncertain, and the gentle reminders of what it means to endure with grace. They don’t ask for words or explanations; they simply offer understanding and presence. And through the hardest times with my mother’s health, they became my lifeline. Each ride, each quiet moment in the barn, was a chance to connect not just with them, but with her— the mother who gave me this gift of solace and strength.

Equine-assisted therapy holds an unimaginably special place in my heart because of this connection. These therapy centers don’t just help people overcome physical or mental challenges—they provide something far deeper. They offer hope. They remind us of our inner strength. They create a space where healing feels possible. For so many, these programs are life-changing. And for those who dedicate their time to this work, to those who share the gift of horses with individuals facing unimaginable hardships, I am endlessly grateful. You are doing more than facilitating therapy—you are offering people a way back to themselves.

This issue is for my mother, a woman whose love of horses fundamentally shaped who I am. Her perseverance, her strength, and her belief in me have guided

me through every stage of my life. Even now, as her body grows weaker, her spirit remains one of the strongest forces I have ever known. Every day, I am reminded of her resilience, and every day, I strive to carry it forward.

Mom, this issue is for you—for the love of horses we shared, the lessons you taught me, and the grit you instilled in my heart. You showed me what it means to persevere, to find grace even in the hardest times, and to never lose faith. You are my greatest inspiration, and I am endlessly proud to be your daughter. You remind me every single day that each morning brings a fresh start—a chance to begin again.

That’s the promise we made to each other: to take life one day at a time, together. I promise to teach our little Josephine a lesson that will stay with her forever—a lesson you once taught me. When her pony pulls against her, she shouldn’t pull back too tightly. Sometimes, loosening the reins just a little can bring far greater rewards and progress in the saddle, and specifically life. And to honor Aunt Josephine, I’ll bet on the longshots. That’s who you are, after all—the longshot. The one who was often overlooked, underestimated, but rising from behind, surprising the world with your unwavering grit and unshakable belief in yourself and in God. Your story is just starting to unfold, and the best is yet to be shared.

Thank you for being part of this shared love for horses and for recognizing the profound impact they have on our physical, mental, emotional, and even spiritual well-being. Equine Allergies What to Know Heading into Spring and Summer

By Sharlee Shumpert All horse owners have experienced it: the cough on a warm spring day, the yellow mucus caked in a nostril. While the arrival of spring and summer typically brings fairer riding conditions, it also brings allergies. Pastures of clover, hordes of flies, and thousands of types of pollen ambush horses at every turn during the warmer seasons.

It’s no wonder that about 10% to 14% of horses suffer from allergy-related health issues.

Although allergies can affect horses in any season, they are most common in spring and summer when the hot weather brings countless potential allergens to life. So, what are the main culprits behind equine allergies during the growing season, and what can horse owners do to combat them?

Causes of Spring and Summer Allergies Allergies in horses can result from genetic factors or from the numerous allergens they encounter daily. Allergens—substances that trigger allergic reactions—are found in almost everything, from hay and dust to vaccinations and topical medicines. While these allergens are present year-round, what causes the increase in allergic reactions during spring and summer?

In spring, reviving plants and returning insects are often to blame for horses’ runny noses and dull coughs. Pollen is the biggest contributor to spring allergies, but bug bites are also common triggers. Many trees, such as oak, elm, maple, and mulberry, produce allergens, as do

grasses like Bermuda, fescue, perennial, and rye.

Weeds such as ragweed and sagebrush are also known allergen producers. Insects responsible for springtime allergies include gnats, mosquitoes, horse flies, black flies, stable flies, and biting midges, commonly known as “no-see-ums.”

These allergens are largely the same culprits behind summer allergies as well.

Allergy Symptoms Allergy symptoms in horses are relatively easy to identify. Itching and hives commonly accompany skin allergies, while coughing, watery eyes, and nasal discharge are typical of respiratory allergies. However, allergy symptoms can vary widely, and not every horse will display the most obvious signs. Some horses may wheeze instead of cough, shake their heads, or develop swelling near the site of irritation for skin allergies. Hair loss from scratching and dry skin can also indicate allergies.

Like humans, horses can experience anaphylaxis due to allergies. Anaphylaxis is a severe, life-threatening allergic reaction that can occur within seconds or minutes of exposure. It is characterized by a dramatic drop in blood pressure, labored breathing, aggressive hives, a weak pulse, and even collapse. Anaphylaxis is a medical emergency and requires immediate veterinary care. Veterinarians can administer medications such as epinephrine and dexamethasone to treat the reaction.

Allergy Treatments There are many options for treating equine allergies. Antihistamines are common, and oral ones such as diphenhydramine, cetirizine, and hydroxyzine are frequently used.

Diphenhydramine, or Benadryl, must be obtained through a veterinarian and is typically only used in emergencies since it is not FDA-approved for equines. Giving it for extended periods is not advised. Cetirizine, known as Zyrtec in human medicine, is available without a prescription, although its effectiveness in horses is questionable. A veterinarian’s prescription is necessary for hydroxyzine (Atarax or Vistaril), which is usually given as needed and is not meant for indefinite use.

Common corticosteroids used to treat allergies include dexamethasone, prednisolone, and triamcinolone acetonide, all of which require a veterinarian’s prescription. Steroids offer more immediate relief from allergic reactions and are typically administered as needed, although they are sometimes given long-term.

Another option is allergen-specific immunotherapy, or ASIT. This treatment involves allergy testing the horse so individualized injections of

allergens can be created to gradually desensitize its immune system. ASIT provides a more permanent solution to allergies, as it can potentially eliminate symptoms entirely, allowing a horse to discontinue allergy medications.

Additionally, there are numerous supplements available online marketed as allergy treatments.

Horse owners can experiment with different products to determine what works best for their horse.

It is also worth noting that some allergy solutions may be simple fixes. If a horse’s allergens are known, limiting contact with irritating substances like hay and dust can reduce symptoms. If flies are the cause, more frequent stall cleaning and regular application of fly spray can help reduce pests in the barn.

Allergies are annoying for both horse and owner, but they are manageable. Finding the right treatment for each horse may take time, but relief is achievable. Hopefully, as we move into spring and summer armed with this knowledge, we can combat the coughing, sneezing and itching so our horses can enjoy the warmer months and perform their best.

Fly Away, Flies!

How to Repel and Kill Warm Weather Pests

Is there anything more annoying on a hot summer day than a fly? These buzzing, biting pests are the bane of every horse owner’s existence and often seem inescapable. What can be done to minimize discomfort and reduce the overall pest population during fly season?

What Flies Are Common in the Southeast?

The flies found in barns can be divided into two main categories: filth flies and aquatic (or semi-aquatic) flies. The difference lies in where their larvae develop. As the names suggest, the larvae of filth flies develop in decaying matter, while the larvae of aquatic flies develop around or in water.

In the Southeastern U.S., the filth flies that bother horses are typically stable flies, house flies, horn flies, bot flies, gnats, and face flies. These flies develop in manure and are the “little” ones that constantly make horses twitch and swish their tails.

Horse flies and deer flies are the “big ones” with

strong, painful bites. They are the loud buzzers that cause stronger reactions in horses, such as bucking, kicking, and biting. Horse and deer flies are aquatic or semi-aquatic, and other common flies in this category include mosquitoes and black flies.

What Preventatives and Repellents Are Available?

Fly sprays are the most common solution for flies and a good starting point for fly control. They are safe, effective, and easy to use. However, horse owners should be cautious when trying out new sprays, as some horses may have allergic reactions to certain brands. Always test a small area first to ensure your horse is not sensitive to the product.

Feed-through repellents are larvicides that kill flies in the larval stage. Options include drug-based and natural feed-throughs. Diflubenzuron is a commonly used pesticide in these products, while garlic is a popular natural repellent. Feed-through repellents typically come in powder or pellet

Barn and Pasture Conditions Maintaining a clean barn and pasture can significantly reduce the fly population. Regularly remove manure and replace stagnant water. Since many flies that bother horses are filth flies, cleaning your barn is a solid first step in fly prevention. Fans can also help by improving airflow and blowing pests away.

Fly Gear Fly masks, sheets, and boots provide instant relief from flies. Made of breathable mesh, these products protect horses while keeping them comfortable. They come in a variety of styles, patterns, and colors, making them easy to find and customize for your horse.

Insecticides Insecticides are a strong option for fighting flies but should be used with caution. Available as aerosols, sprays, and baits, these products must be used according to the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure safety for both humans and animals. Always confirm that the insecticide is safe for horses before application.

Parasitic Wasps For a natural approach, consider parasitic wasps. These tiny, nocturnal insects are harmless to humans and animals but highly effective in controlling fly populations. They kill fly pupae by laying eggs inside them. Regular releases of parasitic wasps are necessary to maintain control. Brands like Fly Eliminators offer this environmentally friendly option as an alternative to chemical sprays and insecticides.

A Customized Solution With so many options available, horse owners can create a customized fly-prevention plan that works best for their needs. By using these tools, barns can be quieter, horses can be more comfortable, and summer days can be a little less stressful for everyone.

For horse owners and trainers, the goal is to maintain that partnership for years, allowing horses to compete at their peak without interruption. However, without proper care, some horses may face injuries and early retirement, cutting their careers short.

Extending the longevity of a performance horse isn’t about luck—it takes thoughtful care, strategic training, and effective management.

Make it or Break it: Conformation There’s no magic formula to guarantee your horse a long, productive athletic career. Some factors are within your control, while others are not. One factor largely out of your control is conformation.

Conformation refers to how a horse’s bones are structured and where joint stress occurs. It is primarily determined by genetics and quality breeding.

Poor conformation can place disproportionate and excessive stress on a horse’s knees, hooves, hocks, stifles, shoulders, and back. When biomechanical forces combine with imperfect skeletal anatomy, these stressors accumulate. An inadequate training program can further exacerbate the issue, causing excessive inflammation in the horse’s bones and soft tissues from repeated impact.

Demand a Plan: Care and Management Even with good conformation, a well-thought-out management plan is essential for maximizing your

horse’s performance career. It starts with general and preventative care, including health checks, hoof care, nutrition, training, and rehabilitation. Good husbandry practices are the cornerstone of maintaining a performance horse’s longevity.

Work closely with your veterinarian to create a diet plan that maintains body weight and supports lean muscle development. Stay current on vaccinations, deworming, and dental care by scheduling veterinarian visits for the fiscal year. Discuss bodywork options with your veterinarian to support your horse’s musculoskeletal system, such as chiropractic care, PEMF therapy, acupuncture, or shockwave/laser treatments.

Some veterinary practices offer these services for an additional fee.

Hoof care cannot be overstated. Schedule regular

farrier visits every four to six weeks to ensure your horse’s hooves remain balanced, as proper hoof care is critical for biomechanical health and soundness.

A balanced, nutritious diet is vital for a performance horse, promoting healthy bone, cartilage, and joint growth. Avoid overfeeding, particularly in young horses, as this can lead to conditions like osteochondritis dissecans (OCD), a joint issue causing pain and lameness. In mature horses, excessive calories that aren’t burned off during exercise can result in weight gain, which places undue stress on joints.

Training and rehabilitation regimens are equally important. Poor training techniques can cause breakdowns, cutting a performance horse’s career short.

Understand your horse’s limitations and gradually build their fitness to meet the demands of their discipline. Collaborate with your trainer and veterinarian to create a custom training schedule that includes a recovery day.

Tracking your horse’s workouts is as simple as tracking your own. Consider using an equine heart rate monitor paired with a Bluetooth device, such as a smartphone. Equine workout apps can detail your horse’s exercise, including gait times and speeds. Additionally, monitor your horse’s body condition score (BCS) and weight monthly. Be mindful to include at least one weekly recovery day in their training plan, as overworking horses can lead to anxiety and an increased risk of soft tissue injuries.

By following these guidelines, you can help ensure your performance horse remains healthy, happy, and capable of excelling in their discipline.

Final Thoughts When your horses are well cared for through preventative management and training, their performance careers can last longer. As owners, it’s critical to maximize a horse’s career through strategic planning for musculoskeletal system maintenance. Consult with your veterinarian, farrier, and trainer to develop a performance schedule tailored to your horse’s needs.

Understanding the Horse’s Back

A well-developed topline supports fitness, protects against strain and injury, and enhances the horse’s appearance. Like building muscle in human athletes, developing a topline requires proper management, training, and genetics. While it can be challenging, with dedication and the right approach, significant improvements can be achieved.

What Is the Topline?

The “topline” refers to a group of muscles running from the withers to the croup. These muscles include: 1. Longissimus dorsi: The largest muscle in the back; it stabilizes the spine, supports proper movement, and carries the saddle and rider.

2. Latissimus dorsi: Pulls the leg backward and propels the horse forward.

3. Trapezius: Moves the shoulder blade forward and backward.

A horse’s topline can be assessed visually and through palpation. Healthy topline muscles should feel smooth and flat, with a well-rounded body that isn’t overly fat. Be cautious—overweight horses may appear to have a developed topline, but subcutaneous fat could mask underdeveloped muscles.

Factors Affecting Topline Health Several factors influence a horse’s topline development. Age plays a role, as older horses naturally lose muscle tone and often struggle to extract nutrients from their feed. Proper saddle fit is also crucial; poorly fitted saddles can create pressure points that cause pain and muscle atrophy, so consulting a qualified saddle fitter early in training is essential. Diet is another key factor, as horses need sufficient energy and protein to support muscle growth and recovery. Medical conditions like Cushing’s disease or PPID can disrupt protein metabolism and lead to muscle atrophy, while issues like kissing spines (overriding dorsal spinous processes) may prevent proper topline development as horses avoid using certain Illustration by Nutrena muscle groups due to pain. Finally, exercise and turnout are important; incorporating natural inclines or hills in turnout pastures can encourage the horse to engage the correct muscles and build a stronger topline.

ing a strong topline. The following are top exercises for topline muscle development.

Transition Work Repetitive circles in an arena can become monotonous for both horse and rider. Instead, incorporate upward and downward transitions, whether lunging or riding. These exercises encourage the horse to push from behind, balance properly, and lift their withers. Ensure transitions are intentional and performed with softness.

Pole Work Ground poles or raised poles can help your horse lift its back, engage abdominal muscles, and round its topline. Start with a single pole at a walk, especially if your horse is new to pole work. Progress to multiple ground poles or raise them slightly (2-4 inches) to add complexity.

Lateral Work Lateral exercises, such as turn on the forehand, turn on the haunches, and leg yields, strengthen the adductor and abductor muscles. These movements improve flexibility and muscle tone. Keep the exercises smooth and tension-free to avoid stress, and consult your trainer to create a balanced workout plan.

Hill Work If possible, incorporate hill work into your horse’s routine. Walking or trotting uphill improves proprioception, strengthens the hind end, and engages the abdominal muscles to lift the topline.

Topline Stretches Stretching before and after workouts is essential for equine athletes. Effective stretches include: • Chin to chest • Chin between the knees • Chin between the fetlocks • Carrot stretches Hold each stretch for 10-15 seconds, but stop if the horse shows signs of discomfort, such as tail swishing, ear pinning, kicking, or biting.

Conclusion Building a strong topline takes time and commitment, but the results are worth the effort.

A well-developed topline supports your horse’s performance, longevity, and overall health. Adjust training gradually, track progress, and always consult your trainer when making changes to your horse’s routine. With the right management, your equine athlete will thrive for years to come.

When Dreams Strike True

The Story of Blue Thunder and Savannah

M

ost of us have heard the expression “dream come true,” but what does that look like? For 10-year-old Savannah Mize, it looks like her four-legged friend, Blue Thunder, a sorrel gelding who may or may not be a unicorn in disguise. From the moment Savannah and her mom, Skye, began planning this horse’s life, miracles have swirled around him, turning dreams into reality. This is the story of how Blue and Savannah braved impossible odds and found their rainbow on the other side of the storm, inspiring thousands along the way.

Franklin, Texas, is where this tale takes place. It all began when young Savannah fell in love with the sport of reining, mostly thanks to the YouTube channel of professional trainer Matt Mills. When breeding season arrived, her mother, Skye, asked the little cowgirl— who was 5 at the time—if she wanted to breed her mare, Lady Bee Packin. Of course, the answer was yes. Savannah carefully scoured

stallion registries to pick the perfect match for her foal and settled on the beautiful buckskin Gunner Dun It Again. Skye was amused and went along with her daughter’s dreaming, but she knew Savannah’s chosen stallion was out of their price range. Nevertheless, Savannah wasn’t deterred. She contacted the stallion station that had Gunner Dun It Again and attempted to negotiate a breeding contract for her mare.

When the stallion’s owner heard about Savannah’s call, he agreed to trade a breeding to his horse for one of Savannah’s paintings.

Naturally, people were enchanted by the story of this determined 5-year-old, and they began to follow Savannah and Blue Thunder’s journey before the foal was even born.

These same followers soon became donors when Blue suffered a disastrous fracture to his radius and ulna after being kicked at just three months old. The foal needed extensive surgery, and with the help of generous supporters via an auction, Skye and Savan-

nah were able to take Blue Thunder to Texas A&M for a life-saving operation. Surgeons Dr. Glass and Dr. Watkins performed the procedure, and Dr. Cameron Stoudt-Donnell, the Mizes’ regular veterinarian, referred them. To this day, the Mizes express their immense gratitude to the veterinarians and donors who saved Blue Thunder’s life. While he will always have a plate in his leg, Blue is still able to thrive and compete in the arena, thanks to the kindness of those who rallied behind him and his little girl.

After his operation, Savannah continued to have big hopes for Blue, and those hopes centered on her idol, Matt Mills. From the moment her foal existed, Savannah told her mom that Matt was going to ride her horse. One miracle followed another, and somehow, Matt heard about Savannah and the horse she dreamed of turning into a reining superstar. He agreed to ride Blue Thunder and coach Savannah, and thus, a fairytale friendship was born.

In 2024, Matt rode Blue during his futurity year. The two placed fifth at the APHA Open Level 4 Futurity, and they competed at the NRHA Open Level 4 Futurity in Oklahoma City, where they missed the finals by just half a point. Matt plans to haul Blue during his derby year as well, and he has never charged the Mizes for riding Blue or helping Savannah.

When asked about working with Matt, Savannah says, “I am grateful every time I talk to him or ride with him.

It’s the biggest opportunity ever.” With a choked voice, Skye adds, “That man is an angel among us. His wife, Kar-

en, has been a huge part of this, too. They are absolutely incredible.”

It was through Matt that Savannah came into contact with the Western megacompany Teton Ridge. Like thousands online, those at the company were touched by Blue Thunder’s story. Soon after, they hired Savannah as a reporter, and she now serves as the official Teton Ridge kid reporter for the American Performance Horseman each year. She interviews athletes and speaks with stars from the reining and cutting worlds.

The Mizes also released a children’s book called Blue Thunder: A Unicorn Story, available on Amazon. At the NRHA Futurity in 2024, they even held a signing event with Matt. Skye and Savannah are passionate about introducing the world of reining to more people, especially kids. From this passion came the Youth Summit event, which features a clinic with Matt Mills, a speech on veterinary medicine by Dr. Glass (one of Blue Thunder’s surgeons), a session on social media etiquette with Skye Mize (owner of equine media company WhoaZone Marketing), and motivational pep talks from Savannah herself. She emphasizes her belief in God as one of her main talking points, as both she and Skye say Blue Thunder’s story has been a “God-thing from the start.”

This year, the Youth Summit will be held at Circle T Arena in Hamilton, Texas, on Sept. 20. Details about the event will be available online on Savannah and Blue Thunder’s Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok accounts.

n the Western industry, hundreds of boutiques, shops, and vendors celebrate the cowboy way of life with their creations. From jewelry and clothing to tack and decorations, these hardworking artisans offer a wide range of products. Anyone who has attended a Western trade show knows how stunning and unique these items can be.

Whether setting up at weekend shows, operating storefronts, running online stores, or doing a combination of the three, these individuals play a crucial role in not only the economy of the Western industry but also in preserving its culture and character.

Like any other skill, learning to develop these products takes significant time and training. Often, crafters spend years honing their abilities.

This article highlights three young artisans who are sharpening their skills while already creating high-quality products that contribute to the future of the Western lifestyle.

Emma Unruh and The Buffalo Bling

Emma Unruh is the 17-year-old owner of The Buffalo Bling, a business specializing in custom pearl snap rodeo shirts. Based in California, she began making shirts in November 2023 when she created her first button-up as an assignment for her advanced sewing class at her local community college.

“A few weeks later, I decided to try making a few more rodeo shirts, except this time I wanted to use some flashy fabric instead of plain cotton,” Emma said. “Later, I posted on Facebook the two shirts that I made, and within 24 hours, I had over 10 people wanting to buy a shirt.”

Since then, The Buffalo Bling has grown in popularity, especially among barrel racers. Emma has crafted more than 350 custom shirts, with some even featured in Barrel Horse News on notable jockeys. In 2024, 48 barrel racers who qualified for the Junior World Finals wore Buffalo Bling shirts.

Emma has been riding for eight years and competes as both a barrel racer and breakaway roper.

She enjoys working with futurity horses and hopes to join a college rodeo team. Her future plans in-

clude pursuing a business marketing degree in 2026 and expanding The Buffalo Bling by hiring staff, growing her social media presence, and introducing her shirts to the international market. One of her biggest goals is to dress a contestant for the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas.

When asked what advice she would give to young people looking to start a business, Emma emphasized the importance of a “go-getter” mentality while acknowledging personal limits. “Set your goals high, but be realistic about what can be accomplished,” she said.

Emma has big plans for The Buffalo Bling, and her business can be found on Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok.

Natalie Ludwig and Dazzle ‘n Dirt Designs Natalie Ludwig, a 15-year-old from Texas, owns Dazzle ‘n Dirt Designs, a business that sells custom crystal horse tack, crystal apparel such as helmets, and Western leather jewelry.

“I started my business in July 2024,” Ludwig said.

“I wanted a bling piece of tack for a rodeo but couldn’t afford it, so I decided to make my own.

I really enjoyed making it, so I decided to start a business where I could share with others what I love doing and bring them high-quality, affordable tack that always looks stunning!”

Ludwig’s tack sets typically feature 15,000 to 20,000 crystals, and it takes her three to four weeks to make them. When crafting a tack set, her days are mostly spent carefully placing crystals. She occasionally incorporates metal bedazzled conchos and fringe into her intricate designs.

Ludwig has been riding horses since she was 7 years old. She began as an English rider before transitioning to Western riding. By saving money for years, she bought herself a horse to learn barrel racing, making her first barrel run in December 2023.

She plans to attend college to pursue a degree in either business or veterinary technology and says she will most likely continue operating her company in the foreseeable future. She loves owning a small business, and her chief goal is for her products to be loved by the entire equestrian community, both English and Western.

Her advice for aspiring entrepreneurs: “It’s not

going to be easy, but if you really want to make it happen, stop dreaming and actually do it! Success is a decision, not a dream!” Ludwig also recommends accepting help from others in the industry and learning from successful individuals.

Miley Martin and The Punchy Palomino

Miley Martin, an East Texas native, owns The Punchy Palomino. At 14 years old, she says she founded her business in 2023 but began pursuing it more seriously in the summer of 2024. She specializes in silver and gold Western jewelry but also offers other items, such as tail bags and tack charms.

Martin handmakes most of her products but also provides some wholesale items. Her jewelry often features iconic Western imagery, including cacti, buffaloes, cattle tags, and playing cards.

Martin grew up around horses and cattle, and last year, she began barrel racing at rodeos. She aspires to open her own storefront in the future and hopes to pursue modeling as well. Her college plans include majoring in equine science.

Her goal for her business is to expand and reach as many people as possible. “I want to provide products that stand out and pull every outfit together!” she said.

Martin’s advice for aspiring entrepreneurs is simple: “Just go for it! I faced so much doubt because I was 13 starting a business, but I’ve grown so much since then and have no regrets. If starting a business is something you want to do, do it! Beat the odds!”

The Punchy Palomino has an Instagram account, a TikTok account, and a Facebook group.

Young entrepreneurs like Martin remind us that so much of life is about finding the courage to act.

Taking risks and putting ourselves out there can be difficult, but ultimately, it’s often what it takes to succeed. With every item crafted, Martin continues to showcase the Western spirit and the bravery required to bring a dream to life.

Eye-catching floral beds and shrubs can make horse barns more appealing to potential clients and more camera-friendly for marketing. While stunning, some horse owners may not realize that these aesthetic plants might be dangerous if a horse, dog, or cat consumes them. Knowing which ornamental plants are safe can save owners money before purchasing them and prevent an expensive vet bill.

Trees

Even if trees, shrubs, and flowers are planted well out of a horse’s reach, exposure is still possible. Severe weather can knock branches into horse pastures and damage fence lines, allowing horses to escape and access restricted areas. Generally, horses will avoid unfamiliar plants, but in a pinch— or if pasture grass is very limited—a horse might accidentally consume a toxic plant. Sometimes only

parts of the plant (leaves, stems, or flowers) are poisonous, but in some cases, the entire plant is lethal.

How toxic a plant is depends on several factors: • The horse’s age and weight • How much of the plant was consumed • The plant’s life stage There are many types of trees that are deadly to horses. Owners should avoid planting, or allowing horses access to, the following trees: • Red maples and other maples • Wild cherry • Black walnut • Buckeye • Golden Chain tree • Mimosa • Black locust • Oak • Kentucky coffee tree • Persimmon • Chinaberry • Tung nut • Cycad palms

Ornamental Flowers and Shrubs

It’s easy to see why horse owners want beautiful flower beds—they create an attractive scene for photo opportunities and other marketing purposes.

However, some of these stunning flowers could be disastrous if a horse, dog, or cat mistakes them for a tasty treat. Ornamental plants that should NOT be planted in flower beds or around horse properties include: • Oleander • Morning glory • Branching ivy • Atamasco, rain, and zephyr lilies • Foxglove • Hydrangeas • Rhododendron • Mountain laurel • Azalea Shrubs can complete a beautiful flower bed, but some species are just as deadly as the flowers.

Avoid planting the following shrubs when planning a flower bed: • Japanese or other yew bushes • Privet • Common boxwood • Elderberry • Choke cherry • Buckthorn • Fetterbush • Laurel and day-blooming Jessamine

• Serviceberry • Carolina allspice

Reducing and Removing Toxic Plants

Completely eliminating toxic plants from your property is essential, both above and below ground.

Always wear gloves and remove flowering plants before they seed to reduce the chance of their seeds spreading. Use herbicides as directed to prevent regrowth.

Even after removing all toxic plants on your property, you may not be in the clear. Neighbors, whether horse owners or not, could unknowingly harbor toxic plants that may still affect your horses.

Have a conversation with your neighbors to ensure they don’t accidentally harm your horses.

Another perk of spring is the abundance of fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables.

Locally grown produce offers numerous benefits for riders, including more nutrients, fresher taste, reduced environmental impact, and support for local farmers and businesses. Plus, these delicious, fresh treats can be a healthy snack for your horse companions! Here’s a list of horse-approved fruits and vegetables to share with your equine friends.

Fruits

Fruits are packed with essential vitamins and can provide hydration for horses. While apples are the most common fruit treat, several other fruits are

safe for horses when fed in moderation and small amounts: • Apples: Cut into smaller pieces and remove the seeds and core.

• Bananas: Horses love bananas, peel and all! Avoid feeding bananas to horses with HYPP (hyperkalemic periodic paralysis), as potassium can trigger an attack.

• Berries: Blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries are safe in small amounts.

• Melons: Watermelon, cantaloupe, and honeydew are great choices. Feed only the flesh and remove the seeds.

• Pineapple: Remove the tough outer skin and core, and cut into smaller pieces.

• Grapes and raisins: A sweet snack for horses, but note that these are toxic to dogs.

• Pears: A perfect alternative to apples for horses

• Stone fruits: Peaches, plums, nectarines, apricots, mangoes, and cherries are fine treats, but always remove the pits.

Vegetables Vegetables can also be a nutritious treat for horses when fed in moderation and small quantities to avoid digestive issues: • Beans: Pinto, red, and fava beans make great crunchy snacks.

• Carrots: Always a favorite. Cut into small pieces to avoid choking.

• Celery: Another crunchy, hydrating treat.

• Corn: Remove kernels from the cob.

• Cucumbers: A refreshing source of hydration.

• Peas: Snap peas, snow peas in the pod, or loose peas are all suitable.

• Root vegetables: Sweet potatoes, turnips, radishes, yams, beets, and parsnips are safe options.

Fruits and Vegetables to Avoid Like dogs and cats, horses also have a list of foods they should never eat. Even small amounts of the following can be dangerous, and in some cases, deadly: • Avocados: The pit, skin, and tree leaves are highly toxic to horses.

• Potatoes, eggplants, tomatoes, and peppers: These are part of the nightshade family and are harmful to horses.

• Onions, garlic, and leeks: These can damage red blood cells and cause anemia.

• Cabbage, broccoli, kale, bok choy, Brussels sprouts, spinach, rhubarb, and cauliflower: These can lead to gastrointestinal irritation, including diarrhea and colic.

Spoiling your horse with fruits and vegetables can be a fun and rewarding way to show affection, aid in training, and provide enrichment. However, always remember to feed these treats in moderation and in small amounts to prevent gastrointestinal issues.

Why Rodeo Must Be Preserved

n a fast-changing world, tradition provides a sense of security and belonging, which is often why people cling to it. We endow days, costumes, events, and foods with special meanings, and we return to these things because they help us establish our identities. The sport of rodeo, with all its dust, myths, and gold, is no exception to this rule: it is an institution of culture, a beacon that has guided people to their identities for centuries. Its preservation is precious not simply because it is tradition, but because it is a blessed tradition of freedom, empowerment, and harmony between humans and the creatures of the world. When one looks back at the history of rodeo, they will find the sport and lifestyle to be an exhilarating blend of different peoples, cus-

toms, and techniques which have come together to form something remarkable; to preserve rodeo is to preserve humanity’s quest for freedom.

Rodeo has impressively Spanish origins, as even the word “rodeo” itself comes from the Spanish verb rodear, meaning “to surround,” which refers to the essential practice of rounding up cattle. Spanish cowboys, or vaqueros, have been around for centuries and are the source of many of the skills, disciplines, and aesthetics we think of as “Western.” When the Spaniards came to the Americas, they brought their horses and their culture with them, both of which were adopted and adapted

by Native American tribes such as the Pueblo, the Navajo, and the Comanche. These Native Americans, who added many unique contributions to

rodeo in their own right, played a monumental role in the shaping of cowboy culture, and to this day, rodeos that highlight the Hispanic and Native American influences on the sport are held around the United States. The Pendleton Round-Up and Cheyenne Frontier Days are prestigious rodeos that are extensively steeped in Native American culture, and the Heritage of Mexico Rodeo, which is part of the Greeley Stampede, is a spectacular celebration of the cowboy’s Hispanic roots.

Historically, the American cowboy had been a much more multicultural character than we have been led to believe. The frontier, with its promises of escape and individualism, drew many different kinds of people to itself. True, there were those who were drawn to the West by the desire to gamble,

drink, and fight, but there were plenty of others who saw the cowboy way of life as a means to leave economic and societal oppressions. Because of this, rodeo history has many famous examples of cowboys from various cultural backgrounds; among their ranks are Nat Love, a freedman from Tennessee whose victories and exploits made him immortal in cowboy mythology; Ikua Purdy, the Paniolo whose victory as a world champion roper in Cheyenne, Wyoming, in 1908 helped end prejudice against Hawaiian cowboys; and legendary Native American cowboy Jackson Sundown of the Nez Perce tribe. Additionally, women have claimed many lead roles in the stories of the cowboy even in periods of great misogyny—Annie Oakley with her shotgun and Barbara “Tad” Lucas with her hippodrome

stand both brought attention to women in rodeo and elevated the sport as a whole. Just as there are rodeos which focus on the cultural origins of the sport, there are also rodeo events and associations which focus on the diverse groups of people within rodeo. The Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo is forty-one years old and celebrates the contributions of black cowboys and cowgirls; it is named after iconic cowboy Bill Pickett who was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame for inventing the rodeo technique known as bulldogging. He was also the first African American to be inducted into the National Cowboy Hall of Fame, and the rodeo which bears his name stands alone as the United States’ only African American touring rodeo. The Women’s Professional Rodeo Association, or WPRA, is an association run by women for women, and while they sponsor the event of barrel racing for PRCA rodeos, the WPRA also sponsors All Women’s rodeos which feature barrel racing, breakaway roping, tie-down roping, and team roping. At the WPRA World Finals, women compete in ten events, including roughstock. The Cheyenne Frontier Days rodeo, which is the world’s largest outdoor rodeo, also recently began hosting the Women’s Ranch Bronc Championship World Finals. The WRBC now calls their season “The Trail to Cheyenne Tour.”

While rodeo is not immune to the influences of prejudice and discrimination, the fact still remains that the cowboy’s way of life, with its emphasis on freedom, has always been attractive to those on the fringes of society looking to escape and rise with the sound of the horse’s wild hoof beats.

Those who found nowhere to belong in the crowded cities of Europe, those who were driven to the Western frontier by poverty and oppression, and those who simply had a love for adventure discovered a lifestyle where their spirits could roam free, and that principle is what lies at the heart of rodeo. The concept of a sport that, at its core, simply celebrates freedom is unique; the desire to be free is something that any human being can relate to, and rodeo is a literal embodiment of humanity’s striving to fulfill that wish. Recognizing that everyone has that wish deep inside them is what it means to be a cowboy. This is proven by the fact that across the world, there are many communities of international cowboys, each with their own customs and styles. South America has hundreds of years of rodeo history, which makes sense when one remembers the sport’s original Spaniards. The culture of the South American gauchos can be found all over the continent in places like Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, and Chile. In

the Philippines, Rodeo Masbateño has been going on since the 1990s, but the country’s overall rodeo history is centuries old. Rodeo is also a well-established sport in Australia and Canada, and newer cowboy communities are appearing in countries like Italy. There have also been a few rodeos held in seemingly unlikely places such as China and Egypt.

The horses and cattle that make rodeo possible are the lifestyle’s greatest symbols. They are the reason behind the cowboy’s existence in the first place, and they are recognized as sacred gifts across many cowboy cultures. Unfortunately, those who oppose rodeo often believe that cowboys have little to no regard for the animals their identities and livelihoods depend upon, and this is not true. Much has been done within the rodeo community in recent years to break down misconceptions surrounding the sport, and this is still an ongoing process. But it is disheartening to see the hundreds of years of camaraderie between horses, cattle, and humans recorded by so many diverse cowboy communities disregarded, disparaged, and threatened. Sadly, there are always going to be individuals who do not take the cowboy’s responsibility of stewardship seriously, but these people should not be seen as representatives of the entire culture. The truth is that without horses and livestock, cowboys and cowgirls have no way of life, and this is a sobering fact that any true cowboy is aware of; it is a truth at the heart of our culture.

My hope is that the sport of rodeo and the way of the cowboy will continue to be recognized for the cultural pillars that they are. Around the globe, cowboys represent the human urge to overcome what holds us back, to embrace the lessons whispered by the wild horse and the indomitable bull, to live an undefined life of possibility—the lifestyle is an ancient tradition rooted in liberty and the bond between humanity and the animals that carry us across this planet. Preserving rodeo involves bringing awareness to the history, spirit, and widespread culture of the sport while simultaneously breaking apart the misinformation that circulates around it. It will take effort from both those inside and outside the rodeo community to achieve this, but if the cultural significance of the cowboy keeps being brought to the forefront of modern media, then the ghosts and dreams of cowboys and cowgirls long gone will continue to shine in the golden buckles and aspirations of the new generation.

Until the end of time, humanity shall climb into a dusty saddle, and, on the back of a faithful horse, ride off into the sunset on its quest for freedom.

The latest rule changes, which took effect on April 1, aim to streamline foundational practices, prioritize horse welfare, and enhance accountability in sanctioned events.

For a deeper understanding of these updates, equine attorney Kimbrell Hines of Segal McCambridge shares expert insights that combine her legal expertise with her lifelong love of horses.

What Do the New Rules Address? The recent changes focus on refining event regulations, implementing advanced safety protocols, and elevating compliance standards to lay the groundwork for a more transparent and ethical equestrian environment. Hines highlights a critical point which is horses are different from what they use to be. Now, competition horses can cost upwards of a million dollars, and that is adding pressure on trainers to perform and to win.

With that comes costly and unethical practices that reveal a much darker side to horse sports and a deeper issue in horse welfare.

Equestrians, trainers, and owners have a responsibility to uphold ethical practices to ensure the future of our sport remains self-governed. The USEF urges everyone in the community to hold one another accountable, particularly when it comes to the use of banned substances that pose serious risks to both horse and rider. These dangerous and life-threatening practices not only undermine fair competition but jeopardize the integrity of the sport we all cherish.

Horses are inherently risky, they’re dangerous, and they’re expensive, but, as we all know there’s nothing else like it. Don’t let the business and legal side take away from what we all love about the sport. This might sound a little overwhelming, but it is manageable.”

The 2025 HITS (Horse Shows In The Sun) season is underway, bringing elite equestrian competition to venues across the United States. Known for its expansive circuits and top-tier hunter, jumper, and dressage events, HITS continues to be a cornerstone of the American equestrian calendar.

The season commenced with the HITS Ocala Winter Circuit at Post Time Farm in Ocala, Florida, running from Dec. 11, 2024, through March 23, 2025. This 12week series featured USEF-rated shows, culminating in the $100,000 Great American Insurance Group Grand Prix, where Andre Thieme and For Dilando PS emerged victorious.

HITS Commonwealth Park in Culpeper, Virginia, hosts the Culpeper Show Series from April 12 to Sept. 28, 2025. The series includes the Festival of the Horse™ from May 2–4, offering a blend of competition and community engagement.

On the West Coast, HITS Del Mar at the Del Mar Horsepark in California runs from April 30 to Aug. 31, 2025. This 11-week series features premier hunter/jumper competitions, including two weeks of FEI 2* showjumping.

The venue also hosts dressage events, such as the Dressage Affaire CDI3*, where Anna Buffini recently shone in the Grand Prix Freestyle.

Returning to Lamplight Equestrian Center in Wayne, Illinois, the HITS Chicago Show Series runs from May 7 to Sept. 14, 2025.

Spanning 13 weeks, the series provides USEF-rated competitions for riders of all levels in a picturesque setting.

In Saugerties, New York, the HITS Hudson Valley Show Series takes place from May 21 to Oct. 12, 2025. The series includes FEI showjumping, World Championship Hunter Rider (WCHR) events, USHJA International and National Hunter Derbies, and Zone Championships, all set against the backdrop of the Catskill Mountains.
