How a Horseback Riding Program is Changing Lives in Memphis

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to dance with a horse? For 48 students from the Whitehaven community in Memphis, this is not just a fantasy, but a reality.

They are part of BridgeUp Giddy Up, a free program that teaches them how to ride and communicate with horses and how to use these skills to improve their confidence, leadership, and teamwork.

The program is run by BridgeUp, a non-profit organization that aims to bridge the gap between urban and rural communities through equine education. BridgeUp believes that horses can help children develop social and emotional skills that are essential for their success in life. By exposing them to a different environment and culture, the program also broadens their horizons and

perspectives.

The culmination of the program is the annual BridgeUp Giddy Up Spectacular Event, and took place at Southern Blues Equestrian Center on November 4, 2023. The event highlighted the students’ riding achievements and their progress. The students performed choreographed routines with their horses, demonstrating their harmony and connection. The annual Spectacular event featured local Memphis music, dance, food, and vendors, in a festive atmosphere for the students and their families, and spectators who came out to support the riders and their coaches accomplishments this year.

At the helm of the group are Christian and McKrell Baier, along with their impressive team of Coaches, who have worked tirelessly with these students over the past two years to give them an unparalleled, realistic, introduction and education into the world of equestrian sports. Christian, from Europe, and McKrell, from the United States, have indeed bridged the gap being a husband-wife team dedicated to classical horsemanship and riding. They bring a unique, global perspective to coaching these students, grounded in classical techniques with nothing short of excellence expected.

Hundreds showed up for this event held

in perfect weather at a venue bubbling with excitement. Riders displayed their talents riding in Quadrille to flatwork and jumping exercises demonstrating exceptional skill, timing, and control of both their horses and emotions. Multiple groups performed different routines of varying degrees of difficultyall extremely impressive displays of riding skill considering the relatively short amount of time these riders have been riding, thanks to this program.

The top riders from the BridgeUp GiddyUp program competed for their first time at the Experience Equestrian League (EXEL) local horse show competition earlier this Fall and will compete again the first weekend in December. Students are excited about another opportunity to practice what they’ve learned in this program and compete against equestrians from all over the Midsouth.

Zachary, Larence, Lavarus, and Alana all expressed their excitement for the upcoming horse show event.

“The show was AMAZING! It was an adrenaline rush! I loved it and met so many new people and made new friends,” said Zachary, who will compete with Sinatra. “It was fun being under the bright lights and it was a great lesson in handling the pres-

sure, because I was nervous,” according to Lawrence who also rides Sinatra and Wendy. Lavarus, who rides Lulu, has the goal of staying calm and making improvements at this next December EXEL show. He has only been riding for two years, but has his eye set on traveling the globe and being a top competitor one day. For Alana, who rides Kenny and Wendy, she hopes to advance in the ranks and attend a show for her first horse show ever! She says her favorite thing about the program is the feeling it gives her and the people! Being in this program and around the horses “is a dream come true and something I never thought I could do.”

This program is indeed bringing dreams to life for children who would not have an opportunity to participate in equestrian sports otherwise on a fantastic string of competitive, well-trained, loved, and well- cared for horses. It is also changing the traditional horse show landscape in Germantown, Tenn., introducing a diverse group of riders from a different geographic area in the Greater Memphis area, than what usually develops young equestrians in the English discipline, providing a networking and great learning opportunity for all participating at the EXEL Horse Show event.

Horse & Rider Health Optimizing the Health of Your Horse’s “Knee”

Most of us refer to the front leg joint on a horse as the knee. This joint is made of several small bones, similar to a human wrist. Although it is called the knee and bends forward like a human knee it is different in structure to a human knee. A human’s knee joint is a hinge joint. The stifle joint in the back leg is actually closer in anatomical structure to the knee of a human.

The stifle joint is a critical part of a horse’s anatomy, playing a crucial role in its move-

ment and overall performance. The stifle joint’s health is vital for preventing injuries, maintaining soundness, and promoting longevity in horses. We will delve into various aspects of horse stifle health, including common issues, preventive measures, and management strategies.

As mentioned, the stifle joint is the equivalent of a human knee and is located between the horse’s femur and tibia. Composed of ligaments, tendons, cartilage, and bones, the stifle joint enables the horse to extend and flex its hind legs, facilitating actions like jumping, galloping, and turning. It is a complex joint, prone to various issues that can affect a horse’s performance, just as it is in humans.

There are several issues that can occur in the stifle. We are going to discuss stifle lock, stifle joint inflammation, Osteochondritis Dissacans (OCS), and ligament injuries. Stifle lock, also known as upward fixation of the patella, occurs when the patella gets stuck in an extended position. This condition is more common in young horses and can cause lameness or difficulty in moving. Inflammation in the stifle joint can occur due to repetitive strain, excessive exercise, or trauma. This condition can result in pain, swelling, and stiffness. Osteochondritis Dissecans (OCD) is a condition where fragments of cartilage or bone break loose within the joint, causing

pain and lameness. Early detection and proper treatment are crucial for successful management. Stifle ligament injuries, such as collateral ligament damage, can cause instability in the joint and lead to lameness.

There are ways to decrease the likelihood of stifle injuries in horses. Gradual conditioning and regular exercise can strengthen the muscles surrounding the stifle, reducing the risk of injuries. Providing a well-balanced diet with appropriate levels of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants supports overall joint health. As in humans, maintaining a proper weight for your horse is very important when it comes to the health of the leg joints. Routine checkups, including radiographic evaluations, can help identify early signs of stifle issues and allow for prompt treatment. Proper trimming and shoeing help maintain correct limb alignment, reducing stress on the stifle joint.

If your horse develops or has genetic stifle issues, all hope is not lost. There are things that we can do to promote healing, and maintenance of the stifle joint. If your horse suffers an injury specific exercises prescribed by a veterinarian or equine therapist can help improve stifle joint strength, flexibility, and stability. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may be prescribed to manage pain and inflammation. Additionally, joint supplements containing ingredients like glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate can support joint health. In severe cases, surgical procedures, such as arthroscopy or ligament reconstruction, may be necessary to address stifle issues. As in human athletes, rest periods followed by controlled exercise, as advised by a veterinarian, are crucial for recovery and rehabilitation.

Taking proactive steps to maintain horse stifle health is essential for ensuring the overall well-being and performance of our equine companions. By understanding common stifle issues, implementing preventive measures, and following appropriate management strategies, we can minimize the risk of stifle-related problems and promote optimal health for our horses. Regular veterinary care, proper conditioning, balanced nutrition, and careful monitoring are key to safeguarding the stifle joint’s integrity. Remember, a healthy stifle joint contributes to a happy and active horse and rider.

Optimizing Knee Health in Equestrians

Equestrian sports demand a high level of fitness and strength, particularly in the lower body. From simple movements, such as mounting your horse, to repetitive posting during a prolonged long trot, knee pain or the lack thereof can make or break your ride. The knees, being one of the most crucial joints for riders, are vulnerable to various injuries and strains. To keep riding with comfort and confidence, it is essential for equestrians to prioritize knee health. In this article, we explore common knee injuries in equestrians, preventive measures, exercises, and lifestyle changes to maintain long-term knee health.

Due to the repetitive impact and strain placed on equestrians’ knees while riding common knee injuries include patellar tendi-

nitis, patellar dislocation, meniscus tears, and osteoarthritis. These injuries can result from incorrect posture, inadequate warm-up, weakness in muscles responsible for stabilizing the knee, overuse, and/ or accidents during riding.

Prevention truly is the best medicine, especially when it comes to our knees. Some of the most important preventive measures to keep in mind are very easy, if we will commit to taking the time to do them. Equestrians, no matter what the discipline, commit time to making sure our horses are in shape and up for the challenge of an event or particular ride they are participating in. It is no less important for the rider to make sure his/her body is up for the challenge of riding.

Prevention of injuries in the knees consists of a few critical elements: proper warm up, correct riding position, proper equipment, strengthening and stretching exercises.

Before mounting your horse, engage in dynamic stretches to warm up your muscles and increase joint mobility. The warm up is important for both horse and rider. Maintaining a balanced and aligned position, not only helps your horse perform, but also helps distribute weight evenly through your knees, reducing strain. Investing in proper equipment is also an important step in knee health. Well fitting boots and stirrups provide adequate support and reduce stress on knees. Make sure to take the time to adjust the stirrups to the correct length. Keeping the knees in a position too

high or the stirrups too long, making you reach for them during the ride, puts undue stress on the knees.

A big piece to maintaining knee health is incorporating exercises aimed to increase strength and stability around the knee joint.

This point is one that is not received well by many riders, but remember, we as riders are athletes just like our horses.

Regular exercise can help keep riders’ from injury. Here are basic, yet effective exercises to strengthen knee joints: squats, lunges, leg extensions, and hamstring curls.

• To perform a squat, stand with feet shoulder-width apart, lower your body by bending your knees, and push your hips back.

Keep your weight on your heels and return to the starting position. Start with bodyweight squats and gradually add resistance.

• To perform a lunge, step forward with one leg, bending both knees and lowering your body until your back knee is just above the ground. Return to the starting position and alternate legs. Start with static lunges and progress to walking or reverse lunges.

• To perform leg extensions, sit on a chair or bench with your back straight. Extend one leg in front of you until it is parallel to the ground, pause, and slowly lower it back down. Repeat with the other leg.

• To perform hamstring curls, stand with your feet hip-width apart and hold onto a

stable surface for support. Bend one knee, bringing your heel towards your buttocks, and then slowly lower it back down. Repeat with the other leg.

Lifestyle changes can also be imperative in contributing to the overall knee health of equestrians. Excess weight puts additional strain on the knees. By maintaining a healthy weight through a balanced diet and regular exercise, you can reduce stress on your knee joint. Pay attention to any discomfort or pain in your knees. Rest when needed, and seek medical advice if symptoms persist. Engage in activities that complement equestrian sports, such as swimming, cycling, or yoga. These activities help improve overall strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular fitness, reducing the risk of knee injuries. Incorporate stretching exercises into your routine to enhance flexibility and range of motion in your knees. This can also help prevent strains and improve joint function.

Equestrian knee health is paramount for riders to enjoy the sport without discomfort or injury. By implementing preventive measures by performing knee-strengthening exercises, and adopting a healthy lifestyle, riders can maintain optimal knee health. Remember, taking care of your knees now will ensure you can continue to pursue your passion for equestrian sports for years to come.

Tennessee Equine Hospital Named PATH International Veterinarian of the Year Mid-South Equine Veterinarians Earn Global Recognition for Volunteer Work with Saddle Up

By Miriam Cresswell Tennessee Equine Hospital (TEH) is the 2023 Veterinarian of the Year for the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (Path Intl.). Dr. Monty McInturff, Co-Owner and President of TEH, was presented with the honor at the 2023 PATH Intl. Conference in Charlotte, North Carolina.

PATH Intl. promotes safe and effective therapeutic horseback riding throughout the United States and Canada. The nonprofit organization has more than 800 member centers and nearly 7,000 individual members globally who support more than 53,000

individuals with special needs through equine-assisted services.

The Thompson’s Station team was nominated by Audrey Kidd, Executive Director of Saddle Up!, a Premier Center accredited by PATH Intl. in Franklin, Tennessee, that provides high-quality equine-assisted

therapy programs. TEH veterinarians have volunteered their services at Saddle Up! for more than three decades.

“At Tennessee Equine Hospital, we do everything ‘for the horse,’” said Dr. McInturff.

“It is truly a gift that our veterinary expertise allows us to empower Saddle Up! to provide

children and youth with disabilities the opportunity to grow and develop through therapeutic, educational and recreational activities with horses.”

“It is fair to say that our program could not have grown to our current capacity without the long-time support of this exceptional practice,” said Lynne Evans, Co-Founder of Saddle Up! “This practice goes above and beyond always, and every horse and human is treated with kindness and integrity.

When we are evaluating new horses for the program or determining that it’s time for a faithful horse to retire, this veterinary team is with us every step of the way.”

PATH Intl.’s annual awards honor those who reflect the organization’s celebration of ability, optimism, diversity, and a shared love of equines. TEH became eligible for this international recognition after being named Path Intl.’s Region 5 Veterinarian of the Year earlier this year. PATH Intl.’s Region 5 includes organizations in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee, Puerto Rico, South Africa, and the Caribbean Islands.

Act Three

An OTTB Intermediate Level Eventer

By Grace Netter It’s sometimes hard to make a name for yourself when you’re the third part in a trilogy. In the case of Act Three, an off-thetrack Thoroughbred who is thriving under the second career in Eventing, there was no such issue. “Pippin,” as he is called, is now tackling Intermediate-level competitions after striking out at the races. Donned in pink, you’ll see him storming around the Cross-Country course, with now close to 50 total recognized events under his belt.

His name, Act Three, was chosen because he was the third colt in a string of full brothers, the first two going on to be stakes winners. Even though Pippin raced all the way through his five-year-old year, unlike his brothers, he only won one race. He was even claimed in a race, only to be returned to his breeder. When it was clear that Pippin did not want to race, his team believed it was time for him to find a second career. Based in College Grove, Tenn., this is where his owner and rider, Lauren Romanelli, came into the picture.

Bought solely off of a Changing Saddles LLC Facebook post and the “sound-enough” audio of his jog video, Lauren was immedi-

ately drawn to this bay gelding with a big, white star. The timing was perfect, with Lauren’s personal horse recouping from an injury, allowing time for a project. Knowing how much he appealed to her, a client of Lauren’s ended up buying him for Lauren to train as a project. At 6 years old, it seemed that Pippin was a bit old for the usual reselling market, so Lauren just wanted to see how far he would go. Her client agreed to trade Pippin, in exchange for Lauren training another horse, and the rest is history.

According to Lauren, if Pippin were a person, he’d be Sheldon Cooper from the TV show The Big Bang Theory. Everything needs to be exactly the way he wants it, and how he wants it. He hates to be touched, and will only tolerate being groomed with one, specific brush. He can only be bathed in hot water, and only eats Mrs. Pastures cookies.

Despite this, he is a gentleman, no matter how annoyed he is.

It seems that Pippin’s quirkiness suited him perfectly for a job in eventing. Lauren claims that he was so easy enough right off the bat, that she felt that he could have gone Beginner Novice the very first day that she rode him. Although Pippin is the 5th Thoroughbred that Lauren has evented, he was the first that she produced herself through

the levels. “What I’ve learned about Thoroughbreds is that the things they excel at, they really excel at. Things like running and jumping, but not as much putting their heads down.” Dressage may never be his best test, but Pippin jumps great and confident on Cross-Country. He may have been afraid at first, but he was very agreeable and willing to learn once introduced to it. He took right to water, even cantering in the ocean! After becoming a team in 2016, they competed through Starter, Beginner Novice, and Novice level, before moving up to Training in the summer of 2017.

Even though it was smooth sailing bringing Pippin up through Training level, there was a time where Lauren thought they may have to give up. Upon moving up to Preliminary level in 2020, Pippin began stopping.

A very scopey and careful jumper, Pippin would often scare himself on the other side of the fence. He wouldn’t have refusals at scary jumps, but rather after scary jumps.

Lauren had begun to feel unhappy taking him to competition, and believed that maybe this was not the right path for him.

However, she connected with Canadian Eventer, Karl Slezack, who took over Pippin’s reins while in Florida for the winter.

Together, Slezack helped build Pippin back up from square one, filling in the missing pieces. At the same time, it was discovered that Pippin had mild-moderate kissing spine, and was also getting sore within his body. Upon many discussions with the vets, it took shock-wave therapy to get his body to feeling good again. More confident with Karl, and feeling better in his body, Pippin was ready to go. On paper, his competition record might not look perfect, but it was a ton of learning along the way to get him to become the best horse he can be.

Now at the present, Pippin and Lauren have successfully completed their first event at Intermediate level, at the Florida Horse Park in Ocala, FL. Leading to the move-up, The combination of Pippin not batting an eye at the height change in practice, and Lauren realizing that she wasn’t scared either, was all that was needed to solidify the step up.

This had been a long time coming. After an abscess got in the way of moving up earlier in the year, now was their moment. Dressage and Show-Jumping were good, but it was the Cross-Country that stood out to Lauren the most. Pippin ate up every fence, even enjoying himself on the extra gallop

stretches given at this level. Lauren mentioned that she left the box being aware they might have problems, but he stepped up to the challenge. “He’s a businessman now. He knows his job, and does it well. He made it feel not intimidating at all.”

As far as the future goes, Lauren would like to try and run a 3-star event sometime next year, if Pippin stays confident and comfortable at the level. Now approaching 14 years old, he’s surpassed all Lauren had hoped for him, so it’s whatever he wants to do at this point, she says. It was never a goal for Lauren to go above the 2 or 3-star level herself, so she’ll keep going as far as Pip wants, without pushing. To sum Pippin up, Lauren said, “He is the horse that is helping me achieve all of my dreams. He takes it all in stride, and yes I am smiling in every picture while riding him, because that’s just how much fun he is to ride!”

One piece of advice that Lauren has for people looking to bring a Thoroughbred like Pippin up the levels in Eventing, is to get in a program that supports you. “Your vet, farrier, and trainer, will be who believes in you and what you want to do. Do the work, but you need to commit to the hardness of it.

If you aren’t able to do the work, then find someone else who will do it for them. You don’t have to do it yourself.”

People & Horses NBHA 2023 Winner Haylie Silliman Understands Redemption

By Rachel Ledet Haylie Silliman, 2023 World Champion of the National Barrel Horse Association competition in Perry, Georgia, has a lifelong legacy of horse riding. At 33 years old, Haylie

began riding on the lap of her mother Lisa Burch as a baby.

Haylie’s faith in the entire journey, including hard work, dedication, and perseverance, in addition to her faith in God have led her to current day success.

The NBHA World Championship requires a qualifier for entry: each rider runs two preliminary races in order to gain entrance into the final competition at the end of the week.

Unqualified competitors can also participate in the redemption round for one more chance at entry. Only the winner of each division of the redemption round may enter the finals, and this is how Haylie and Gambler earned a place into the finals. Placing in the top 25% of over 900 horses was an incredible victory, with all horses’ run times coming in at less than one second of each other.

Haylie attributes her success to following God’s plan, which is always the best plan in the long run. Haylie’s encounters meeting people along the way has only added to her faith experience. Supporters, friends, and family have offered encouragement along the way. Her mother, other riders, trainers, friends, and mentors that all have helped spur her progress along the way. Haylie and her horse, Gambling With Fire (known as Gambler) have always had a unique relationship. From the beginning, has allowed Gambler freedom in his playful and sometimes feisty personality. She patiently waits for him to show her respect as he submits to her with a loving hug, redeeming himself. Surprisingly, Gambler will literally wrap his head and neck around her and display a silly grin on his face!

As a child of an equestrian family, Haylie spent many days in the horse barn under the guidance of her Pawpaw who first gifted her a rescued Arabian named Little Toot as a sixth-grade graduation present. “Toot” was not recognized as an ideal barrel horse, but he went on to prove differently as he went to the nationals in pole bending. After his retirement, Haylie had her eye on another little colt with a lot of potential, Gambling with Fire (Gambler). Haylie’s husband Harrison surprised her one Christmas with Gambler, who was owned by two close friends who also had a large influence on her riding. Haylie was selected for a sponsorship

by Opossum Creek Boutique and Tack, sharing in her interview that her greatest influence in life was God and that she takes no credit for her own success. The greatest challenge, according to Haylie, is knowing exactly what each horse needs as they are all different and knowing when to hold back, when to move forward, and when to say goodbye.

Haylie’s future goals include returning back to the NBHA World Championship, The American Qualifier and also someday owning an equestrian facility to help senior horses have a good quality life in their last days. Her other hobbies include helping her husband and in-laws with farming, which provides equestrians with good nutrition for their horses. She really enjoys driving a tractor and offering a helping hand with the cattle! She also enjoys coaching other riders to be able to connect with their horses through groundwork. Haylie’s life motto is to “make the best of every day because every day is a gift.”

What type of riding is your favorite? AND what’s your favorite thing about riding?

I enjoy Barrel Racing more than anything else. I have done several different sports such as softball and cheerleading, but riding horses and competing has so far been the only one that I have felt a genuine passion for. It never feels like something I am forced to do, it’s just something I enjoy and want to do myself.

Tell us about your goals for the NLBR in Oklahoma and why you are determined to qualify/ compete?

My goal for the NLBR this year is to qualify and experience the finals. It has been my goal to qualify for Guthrie ever since I joined Little Britches, and I think once you make it there you can make it anywhere.

Tell us about your horses.

I have six horses, five of them have competed with me.

They have each taught me different things which is important because I think riding different types of horses helps when it comes to advancing in Barrel Racing and riding in general.

AJ fell in love with horses at a young age, and dreamed of becoming a competitive Barrel Racer after watching a barrel race at a local arena in Louisville. She first learned how to ride on a rescue horse that was bound for slaughter. She now has her eyes set on qualifying for the National Little Britches Finals Rodeo in Guthrie, Oklahoma in 2024.

How long have you been riding? How did you get into riding?

I have been riding since I was 12, but I have wanted to ride since I was nine. I went to a barrel race at my local arena and saw girls my age barrel racing for the first time and thought “well, that looks fun, if they can do it I can too”.

Who taught you how to ride? Do you train with anyone?

I started riding with my parents, in my backyard, on a horse we got from a horse rescue in Jackson Miss. She was literally pulled off a trailer bound for slaughter in Mexico.

There was only so much I could do in my pasture /yard at home so I began to attend Barrel Racing clinics. I attended a Connie Combs clinic and a Martha Josey clinic to learn how to properly ride and compete.

After those clinics I started working with some amazing people who have taught me everything I know today. These

What has been the biggest challenge you’ve faced in the sport?

The biggest challenge I have faced in this sport is feeling as if I’m not enough, or not as good as everyone I see competing. I often compared myself to others, without realizing how much work they have put in to get where they are at.

I find myself always wanting what everyone else has, and being at the level others are at, without realizing that if I stick with it and put in the hard work then I will be there one day too.

What has been your biggest success so far?

My biggest success has been overcoming all kinds of big emotions, and learning to just have fun with this sport.I believe once you start focusing on having fun then you truly do realize that there isn’t anything like it.

For some horse owners, those milestones can include purchasing a new horse, foaling and breeding, or achieving training milestones. But for some horse owners, the new year could even bring a new horse property. Buying your first horse property or upgrading your facility is an exciting accomplishment but it does come with one major

management step: establishing and maintaining horse pastures. Well maintained pastures not only add value and eye appeal to your horse property, but can provide excellent turnout conditions for your horses. Pasture turnout can provide enrichment, exercise opportunities, and be an excellent source of forages for a horse’s diet. But, if not established and managed correctly, pastures can become barren wastelands and cost a fortune to reestablish.

There are multiple considerations horse owners need to consider when establishing a new horse pasture from the beginning. These considerations include: 1. Timing 2. Soil sampling

Timing August through November is the best time to establish cool-season pasture grasses, such as timothy, Kentucky bluegrass, Orchardgrass, tall fescue and annual ryegrass. The temperatures are cooler, there is usually more moisture and also less weed pressure. All of these factors will allow seedlings time to develop a root system prior to winter. If fall planting is not possible, spring is the second best time to plant.

Warm season grasses, such as Bermudagrass, Indiangrass, Johnsongrass and Switchgrass, should have been planted in late spring to early summer since the soil must be at least 65℉. Seeds planted in the spring will have more moisture for germination but are at risk for more weed pressure.

Soil Sampling Before any seeding or anything pasture related, the most important step for pasture establishment is soil sampling. Soil sampling allows owners to know the nutrient needs of their soil, pH levels and should be done every three years. Collecting soil samples is relatively easy for horse owners to do.

To start, horse owners should contact their county’s Extension office for soil sample collection boxes and the field sample submission sheet. Next, owners should collect about 5-10 subsamples from each of their pastures in the shape of an “M” and samples should be taken at a depth of 3 inches with either a soil probe or a spade shovel. Owners should do their best to make sure their “M” shaped soil sample pattern covers their entire pasture. Remove the surface residue, mix the subsamples thoroughly in a clean plastic bucket but be sure to keep each pasture sample separated! Fill the soil sample boxes with the subsamples, fill out the field sample submission sheet and mail out the samples and sheet to the following address (for owners that live in Tennessee): Soil, Plant and Pest Center, 5201 Marchant Drive, Nashville, TN 37211 For horse owners in other states, please contact your county’s Extension office for your land-grant university’s soil testing lab.

Results will be mailed and emailed within 3-5 business days. Best advice when mailing soil samples is to mail them early in the week (Monday or Tuesday) to receive results by the end of the week.

Fertilizer Young, growing plants need extra help to get started growing so most horse owners will apply fertilizer. When establishing a grass pasture, owners should apply 90 lbs of Nitrogen/

acre, 30 lbs of P2O5/acre and 40 lbs of K2O/ acre just prior to or during seeding. Additionally, fertilizer should be applied right before rain (about ½ inch) is predicted as sunlight will neutralize pellets if left out.

After a pasture has been established, 90 lbs of Nitrogen/acre should be spread annually while P2O5 and K2O applications will depend on soil analysis. Annual fertilizer application should be split in half, applying half of the recommended amount in the late spring (April or early May) and half in the early summer (June). There is no present length of time to remove horses from pasture to avoid ingestion of fertilizer but owners should make sure pellets are not visible.

However, applying fertilizer incorrectly can be detrimental to a new pasture. This is when having a soil testing result can save horse owners time and money in fertilizer. The ideal soil pH level is 5.5-7.0 for most grass pasture species. If your soil test states your soil is more acidic (4.0 or lower), plants will not take up any fertilizer. To increase the soil pH, lime-based compound should be applied to neutralize the soil.

Seed Bed Preparation Good soil to seed contact is critical to maintain moisture near the seeds since moisture is needed for germination. For seedbed preparation, the best type depends on the type of equipment owners have available and whether

the pasture is being established or already exists. For new pastures, conventional tillage is the best method while no-till drill is the best method.

Conventional tillage needs to be used when a uniform seedbed is needed. The soil should be firm but smooth and fine which will allow moisture to germinate the seed. The seeds should also be drilled at a depth of ¼ to ½ inch.

No-till uses herbicides to destroy existing vegetation then seeds directly into the ground.

Most no-till seed beds are prepared in late summer and planted in the fall.

Large farming equipment for horse owners can be a stretch to obtain if said equipment is not already on hand but there are options.

Owners should contact local farms, Ag COOPs, local equipment rental businesses or soil and water conservation districts for equipment availability.

Planting Seeds Selecting the appropriate seeds is important for new pasture establishment. Owners need to match forage species to the soil, sit and type of operation (grazing grass or hay, animal species and class). In addition, owners need to decide if their pastures will consist of cool season grasses, warm season grasses, a mixture or legume forage. Cool season grasses grow best between 60°F to 80℉, peaking in the spring and fall season. Warm season grass-

es grow best between 80℉ to 95℉, peaking in the late spring until the first frost. Legumes, such as alfalfa, can provide nitrogen to grasses and increase pasture quality but make sure the legume is compatible with grass species to reduce species competition.

When to plant seeds is also an important factor. Cool season grasses should be planted 4-6 weeks before the first frost to allow time for adequate growth while warm season grasses should be planted in late spring to early summer once the soil reaches 65℉ or higher. As for how much seeds to spread, new pastures should receive 25 pounds of seed per acre.

Weed Control Weed management is vital to ensure pasture forage establishment since new seedlings are vulnerable to weed competition. Mowing should be used as the main weed control strategy since new seedlings are more prone to herbicide injury. If herbicides are used, make sure to select products labeled for horse pasture use, read and follow instructions, especially any grazing restrictions and do not apply herbicides in areas with standing water.

If weeds are dense, consider spot applying. If horse owners want to take an extra precaution with herbicide application, horses can be turned back out on pasture 7 days following herbicide application.

Grazing Management In time, new seedlings will emerge but

horse owners should not let their horses graze before the root system has developed since new seedlings can be pulled out by grazing horses. Once seeds have been planted, allow the new seedlings to grow 4-6 inches. To stimulate root development, mow new forages 3-4 inches, allow the forage to re-grow 4-6 inches then mow again. This process should be repeated 2-3 times in the fall and spring. Once the new seedlings have reached 8-12 inches, new pastures can be lightly grazed by horses until the pasture is grazed down to about 4-6 inches.

Remember not to overstock your pastures with too many horses. The rule of thumb is every horse needs about 2 acres of pasture so please be sure to implement rotational grazing management strategies.

Answering Questions About Tack and Equine Liability Insurance

By Jonathan Fortenberry cally (said lovingly), it’s easy to imagine an errant kick causing injury or damage. The base contract addresses that both Medical Payments to Others and Liability can help in these scenarios. Medical Payments usually have limits of $1,000-$5,000 per incident, while Liability limits can range from $100,000 to $1,000,000.

Unfortunately, horses fall into the generalized animal category plagued by dog bites. That’s a different article. What you need to know is some companies either exclude animal liability, limit it to $10,000 for any unknown animal, or cover it up to the full limit if you inform them in advance that you own this animal. Most policies also limit coverage to a certain number of large animals—know if your company allows 2, 4, or 6 large animals.

Now, let me sell you something. Hopeful-

Like many industries, the insurance world for equine enthusiasts and professionals is quite expansive. Over the next few months, we’ll delve into different topics in each issue, providing you with a growing understanding of horse-specific insurance. This month, let’s discuss your tack and the liability that comes with owning a horse.

It’s crucial to understand that the foundation of every insurance policy is a contract outlining the company, the insured party, what is covered, and what is not. So, on a chilly, winter day, while drinking hot cocoa, you could have an absolutely riveting time going through your policy to research these details!

For homeowners insurance, one of the governing documents is the HO-3. Companies may either create their own contract or modify this one for their clients. While there are specific limits for items like money, CD-ROMs (yes, it’s true), and jewelry, generally, items you own will be covered

under personal property. This could include your tack.

Question #1 - Is my tack covered by my homeowners when I go to a show?

According to the base contract, personal property can be covered anywhere globally, usually with a 10% limitation. So, if you have $100,000 of personal property at home, you can cover $10,000 anywhere else in the world.

Theft events often have extra details.

Generally, items stolen from a trailer are not covered. If something happens to your tack at a show, what’s the greatest risk? And if not in a tack stall, where will your stuff be?

If you answered “theft” and “in my trailer,” then we will need to address this later in the article.

Question #2 - Will my homeowners policy cover me if my horse injures someone or damages their property?

In a world where horses think everything is out to get them, and they react dramati-

ly, you laughed at that one.

Did you know you can purchase private horse ownership liability, tack coverage, emergency evacuation coverage, and burial expense help? You can buy these from equine mortality companies. They are very affordable options and depending on which coverage you need, can be bought either stand-alone or with your horse’s mortality policy.

For trainers, breeders, boarders, or other professionals, you can find answers to these in some farm policies.

It is a free program for those that are accepted, and is available to 48 students in the Whitehaven community (located in Memphis Tennessee) between the ages of 11-18. Accepted students will receive 2 horseback riding lessons per week, transportation to the Southern Blues Equestrian Center, as well as two meals per week and Saturday activities including physical fitness and fun. Not only is horseback riding a fun sport and great exercise, but horseback riding can often help children to become more confident, responsible, empathetic, and goal-oriented. And the best part about the program: students who demonstrate exceptional work ethic, commitment, and talent may have the potential to compete in equestrian sport- all free of charge.

Background

The Germantown Charity Horse Show is an all-breed show for locals as well as competitors from around the country. Expect to be amazed at the beautiful horses, skillful riders and fun crowds. From hunter jumpers (yes, jumping over fences) to carriage driving and Gypsy Vanner horses, and from American Saddlebreds and Tennessee Walking Horses to sidesaddle and Paso Fino classes, you see a variety of horses and riding styles. The show benefits Kindred Place (formerly known as the Exchange Club Family Center of Memphis) and contributes to local education programs.

The Germantown Charity Horse Show is a U.S. Equestrian Federation Heritage Competition, giving it national recognition for its contribution to the community and to the sport. The show is one of the oldest and largest all-breed horse shows in the country, and the longest-running sporting event in Shelby County, Tenn.

The “Charity” has always donated profits from the shows to worthy organizations. The first beneficiary was Boys Town. The Home of the Incurables, Le Bonheur, and Kindred Place folowed. GCHS also donates to Germantown High School and Houston High School arts programs.

Mission Statement

To preserve the equestrian history of Germantown by producing an annual horse show for the pleasure of riders and spectators and to financially assist charities in our community.

Vision for the Future

GCHS is planning for the expansion and renovation of all show rings. New drainage and footing will enhance the competitive experience and safety for all participants.

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are needed during the horse show week for ticket sales. Throughout the year, volunteers may join in a variety of activities ranging from show grounds preparation to exhibitor hospitality.

The Germantown Charity Horse Show is proud to sponsor Kindred Place (formerly known as the Exchange Club Family Center) as its charity. The 2024 show will mark the 24th year to help raise funds for this vital organization. Founded in 1984 to address domestic violence issues within families, Kindred Place strives to break the cycle of family abuse and neglect by offering counseling and parental coaching services.

Kindred Place is available to every family that needs a little help getting along. At one time or another, that pretty much means everyone. The Kindred Place Team believes that for every challenge, there is a solution, and for every conflict, an answer. Kindred Place’s goal is to empower families and the individuals within them to recognize and address their unique strengths, bonds, and needs, and, in turn, build better connections.

“Every donation to Kindred Place is a long-term investment in a peaceful community,” said Jennifer Balink, Board President of Kindred Place. “For more than 20 years, the Germantown Charity Horse Show has empowered our mission to build strong, healthy family relationships in every neighborhood, urban and suburban, all across the Greater Memphis community. Mission Statement

To provide hands-on support for service men and women through our WarHorse equestrian program that provides horseback riding and ground lessons, equine care and horse management training for active and retired military who have sustained service related mental and physical injuries.

Vision for the Future

WarHorses for Heroes is a Memphis area nonprofit organization dedicated to the rehabilitation of our veterans using equine therapy. If you are a MidSouth Horse Review reader, we don’t have to convince you of the healing power of horses. We pair our therapy horses with veterans in our community in need of mental or physical healing, and through group or individual therapy sessions, allow the horses to work their magic.

Our vision as an organization is to provide a community for our veterans in need of healing. A place where they can find support for their entire journey back into civilian life, in a way that includes their family and friends, veterans and civilians, and of course our favorite therapists, our horses. WarHorses for Heroes strives to give each and every veteran an avenue to progress from session participant, to advanced rider, to session volunteer, or even to become an active competitor or professional in the horse community.

Our favorite success stories are those of our veterans who have gained so much through the program that they return as volunteers to give back to their fellow veterans.

Volunteer Opportunities

Become a Session Volunteer: Session Volunteers work directly with our therapy horses and our veterans. As a volunteer, your job is to provide a safe and supportive environment for our veterans to heal and

connect with our horses. Session Volunteers socialize with the veterans, groom and tack the horses, and lead or support the veterans as they ride. No previous horse experience is required! Session volunteers attend training workshops to learn to safely and effectively work with horses in a therapeutic environment.

Attend a Volunteer Day, or Organize One for your Group or Company We hold Volunteer Days throughout the year where we invite the community or local corporate groups to work on the farm for a day on repair, maintenance, and beautification projects to help us keep our facilities safe, clean and orderly for the veterans. No skills are required to join us, just a willingness to get dirty and work hard for your veterans.

Become an Organizational Volunteer Organizational volunteers help out with the administrative side of the nonprofit. They help with everything from writing thank you cards to event planning to marketing. No previous experience is required, just a passion for helping your local veterans and the power horses can have in that role.

Giving Opportunities

WarHorses for Heroes never charges the veterans for our services, and never will. We rely on the generous support of our donors to continue to provide equine therapy to our heroes. You can support WarHorses for Heroes with recurring donations in support of a project, donations in honor of a loved one, or by sponsoring the care of a therapy horse for a week, a month, or a year.

Collaboration, Empathy, Resilience, and Action.

These are the words I think of when I think of horse and animal lovers. We have our barn family and horse friends who we always collaborate with when it comes to our horses. We are empathetic and dedicated caregivers, sometimes putting our animals before ourselves, and with that comes resilience. We are a tough, strong and determined group of people that are not afraid of hardwork and a little dirt. Then there is action. Equestrians know and understand that this sport and horses require action to either advance in competition or recreational riding.

During this Giving Season I wanted to highlight equine and equestrian specific nonprofits who are always looking for volunteers, donations, and support to help achieve their mission and goals.

I believe helping those in our equine communities helps enhance lives for our horses and equestrians. I hope you choose to help support a special equine cause this season.

By either share the joy of horses with someone in need, helping a horse that might be in need, or by donating or even volunteering.
