Growing up in a horse family has been the biggest blessing in my life. My maternal grandmother grew up in Lexington, Ky. Horses were always important to her and she was surrounded by them her whole life.

When she was a teenager in the 1920s she worked on the racetracks. It was a way of life and she wanted her future family to own horses, not just work with them.

When she adopted my mother while living in Knoxville, Tenn. she made sure my mom had horses.

My mom owned and showed American Saddlebreds, but before she got her first show horse, a family friend gifted her a pony that lived in their small paddock. My mom didn’t even own a saddle. She would hop on her pony, grab the mane and off she went. It was a passion from the beginning and she taught herself how to ride bareback before ever having a lesson.

My mom said she didn’t care too much for showing.

It was stressful and the pressure to win tied her stomach in knots. She told me she really wanted to just brush and enjoy her horses without the pressures of showing at times. Her horses brought her the most peace and joy in her childhood and the barn was her safe haven.

She did continue to show and ride when she moved to Memphis, Tenn. and started raising her family. My siblings and I were barn babies. There is not a day I remember when horses were not a part of our lives.

I personally think the hardest time in a person’s life is when he/ she is a pre- teen and teenager. The hormones, lack of confidence, pressures of school, and trying to “belong” weigh heavy on teenagers these days, especially with social media. Online bullying is prevalent and the fear of missing out or being left out hangs over many pre- teens’ and teenagers’ shoulders. The main thing that helped me through my teenage years was going to the barn, and being outside with our family’s horses, Sam and Sketch. It was my safe haven too and I enjoyed the peace and joy horses brought into my life.

Being raised around horses helped build my confidence and trust in others. Our horses helped me grow bold and fearless in my decisions. I learned how to better communicate with others by learning how to communicate with horses. I learned how to read body language of horses which spilled over to reading body language in people.

Horses taught me how to control my emotions.

I rode a very sensitive and spooky Thoroughbred, Sketch, so I had to make sure I did not fuel his own anxiety with my emotions. This helped me learn how to keep a level head even during high pressure situations. It also taught me humility. The moment my head started to get too big for my shoulders, my butt

would end up in the dirt. Horses have a funny way of literally bringing you back down to earth. And, speaking of failing and falling off, I had to learn how to pick myself up and start over again. Learning how to brush off the dirt, ignore the bruises and sore muscles and get back on is one of the best life lessons any teenager can learn. I believe it is what taught me resilience and perseverance.

Our horses brought me through the teenage years. I cried a lot on my Thoroughbreds’ shoulders. I had the best laughs with my siblings while at the barn, and I also learned what grief was like for the first time when we had to put Sam to sleep when I was 15 years old.

He broke his leg in the pasture and that was the first time I truly experienced that level of grief. I stepped back from the horses after that. Going to the barn brought a level of sadness I did not expect. I did not ride again until I was almost out of college. I will say, the moment I started riding again, my grief lessened over time. Being at the barn was not as painful. I started enjoying the long hot and cold days in the barn.

I took riding lessons and rode several different kinds of horses. My confidence started to build again and I grew happier. The grief and sadness I felt lessened and by the time I graduated college my sister, Ashlee, gifted me the first horse of my own, Gage. Gage has fulfilled so many dreams these last 16 years.

Five and a half years ago my mom had a massive brain stem stroke. The shock and suddenness of her stroke put my family into a level of grief that we never experienced. She stayed in the ICU, off and on, for 9 months. During that time my dad, who had displayed some minor memory issues, declined to full onset dementia. There were times my mom was on the top floor of the hospital, while my dad was on the bottom floor. Having that level of stress shook me to my core. It has been the most difficult five years of my life. My mom lives with her disabilities from her stroke; bound to a wheelchair, feeding tube and a trach, and my dad is in the sixth stage of Alzheimer’s.

There are seven stages.

In March, 11 days after my daughter was born, my brother passed away. It has been one thing to watch our parents decline over the last five years, but to lose one of my siblings, especially the one closest in age, was devastating. When I was in labor about to give birth, my brother, Philip, was constantly texting for updates. He was excited, he kept saying how he remembered what it was like when his son was born.

Eleven days later he was gone, and he didn’t get to meet his new niece, my daughter.

I mention this personal grief and trauma because I believe if it wasn’t for the many nights I sat in my barn, brushing my horses, mowing the horse pastures, cleaning stalls, filling up water buckets and feeding them daily, I would not be standing as tall. I believe horses have a way to bring people through the hardest moments in life, and they help people of all ages process stress, grief, anxiety, depression and really any physical and emotional challenge or trauma one can face.

This issue, “How Horses Heal” is one I am passionate about and I hope to share the many ways horses help people through hardships in life. I know you, the horse lover and owner, understand how therapeutic cleaning a stall can be, but I hope to share this issue with others, outside of our sport and lifestyle. If I can ask you, our readers, to do anything, it is to share our cover story with all your friends and family, who are not horse people. Let’s share the many ways horses can help heal. It may help someone, who does not have the luxury of horses in their life, move past a challenging or devastating time in their own life.

Summer Sores

Your horse has a wound and it is not healing. “What is going on?” you ask yourself. Summer sores are very common on horses’ legs, lips and even the sheath and belly area. They are particularly worrisome because they can be hard to treat and may not heal after trying several kinds of topical treatments. “Summer sores” are a common name for the wound; however your veterinarian will call these open wounds Cutaneous Habronemiasis.

Habronema larvae, which develop into stomach worms, can embed in your horse’s skin instead of making their way to the stomach where they mature. Typically, the stomach worm doesn’t cause harm to the horse. So how does a stomach worm infect skin wounds? The intermediate hosts are stable flies, which carry larvae from the horse’s manure and lay them in any moist area on the horse’s body.

Thus, a wound on any part of your horse can become infected.

The most common areas of infection are the lips, eyes, sheath, vulva, leg, and belly. The horse’s body can mount an aggressive reaction to

this parasite resulting in proud flesh (exuberant granulation tissue). The wound can be oozy and itchy, with small, yellow rice-shaped nodules around the edges.

Kim Clark of Windyrein Farm in Eads, TN has one horse who is prone to summer sores. “You have to treat this right away. It can heal quickly,

but also get out of control if not treated.” She notes her veterinarian has a topical ointment that is very effective along with oral de-worming with ivermectin.

Treatment and Prevention If you suspect your horse has a summer sore, call your veterinarian for evaluation and treatment options.

The sore may need surgical debridement followed by topical steroid and/ or antibiotics and a bandage to keep flies out as it heals. Your vet may also suggest a course of de-worming with either moxidectin or ivermectin to decrease the stomach worms and the larvae.

A horse that has summer sores may be more prone to get them in the future, so prevention should be a part of your plan. Frequent removal of manure from pastures and stalls, effective composting, fly sheets and fly boots, masks and fly spray, fly predators, fly traps and bait, feed-through insect growth regulators (they disrupt the life cycle), and de-worming on a schedule your vet recommends are helpful tools in preventing these sores. Early and aggressive veterinary treatment combined with multiple fly control practices can help keep your horse healthy. We all know the old saying “you can lead a horse to water,” but what is the modern take on horses and water?

This summer has seen most days with above average temperatures across the mid-south. These temps combined with wide spread draught, can leave horses vulnerable to dehydration.

Equines need 1/2 to 1 gallon of water daily per 100 pounds of body weight.

For the average 1,100 pound horse that translates to 5.5 to 11 gallons of water every day. This amount increases with hot weather, activity/exercise, medical conditions, lactation, diet (protein requires water to be metabolized), and whether they are housed in dry lots or green pastures.

A full water trough doesn’t mean your horse is well hydrated. Several factors can affect your horse’s desire to drink. Horses drink best when the water is between 45-65F. Our regional weather hasn’t had night temps as low as 65F in months. And, horses also don’t like dirty water. Dumping your water trough, scrubbing and refilling it several times a week will encourage your horse to drink. Some horses can be finicky about drinking when away from home, especially if the water is city water with chlorine. Filters can be attached to your hose to help horses drink when on the road. Make it a point to check your horse’s water at least twice a day during these extra hot days.

So how do you make a horse drink?

Loose salt in the feed can encourage water intake. Keeping a salt block available is okay, but some experts suggest having loose salt available since horses have a smooth tongue that doesn’t effectively lick a salt block. Some horses are clever enough to chew the edges of the salt block though. Oral electrolytes are also helpful as they pull water out of the blood and into the intestines, leading to a higher concentration of

Preventing Dehydration in Horses

This summer has brought record breaking heat. Making sure horses have access to clean drinking water is essential to ensure they stay hydrated.

sodium (salt) in the blood. This triggers the thirst response. Giving electrolytes approximately four hours before competition or exercise allows enough time to trigger this thirst response, encouraging the horse to drink and be well hydrated during exertion.

Research during the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta found it beneficial to give daily electrolytes to horses competing under high heat and humidity. Plain water can go through the horse to the urine, so electrolytes are necessary for horses to rehydrate.

“Ways to give oral electrolytes include paste, topdressing grain, or adding to water,” says Dr. Lydia Gray an equine veterinarian. “If electrolytes are added to the horse’s drinking water, it is important to provide a second bucket of plain water.”

In addition to keeping an eye on the water trough, it’s important to check your horse daily for signs of dehydration. Subtle dehydration can affect performance because blood volume decreases, heart rate increases, and body temperature goes up. Knowing your

individual horse’s TPR (temperature, pulse, and respiration) can be a first alert that something needs attention.

Urine output decreases and becomes dark-colored, while gums become dry and pale with dehydration. One way to test for dehydration is by pinching the skin in front of the shoulder and releasing The tented skin should almost “snap” back into place. A better place to test for skin tugor (skin tent test) is the upper eyelid, though some horses may not tolerate this. When a horse’s gum above the tooth is pushed until it blanches white, it should return to moist, pink tissue within 1-2 seconds. It’s good to practice these tests when your horse is in a normal state of health so you can detect problems should they occur.

Heat Stroke - Horses are at risk of overheating and even heat stroke when the heat index (temperature in Fahrenheit combined with the relative humidity) is above 130. So on a day when afternoon temps hit 95F and the humidity is 45% horses are at risk: 95+45=140. When this number is

greater than 150 the horse struggles to stay cool; over 180 and the horse can’t cool itself. It sounds like a big number, but when the temp is 100F and the humidity is 80% your horse is at high risk for heat exhaustion or worse, heat stroke, which is a veterinary emergency.

According to Dr Gray, signs of a horse becoming overheated include excessive sweating or a lack of sweating, a high heart rate, a high respiratory rate - almost panting - and an elevated temperature (as high as 105107F). Horses may also become uncoordinated and stumble, refuse to keep working, refuse to eat or drink, and may even act differently, such as becoming listless and lethargic, or irritable and cranky.

Hyperthermia - Blood supply to muscles, the GI tract, and other organs is restricted when a horse’s body temp hits 105F. This is an emergency that requires quick action. “Stop working the horse and untack him, bringing him into the shade,” says Dr Gray. “Try to find a breeze or stand him in front of a fan, if possible. Hose the entire body with cold water. Offer cool water to drink and call your veterinarian for additional advice.”

Anhidrosis - Some horses have a medical condition in which they don’t sweat, or sweat very little. These horses must be managed with great care to avoid overheating. In recent years several tools have shown promise. Ask your veterinary about diet, acupuncture, supplements, and appropriate housing to help your horse that has anhidrosis.

Bottom Line - With careful daily monitoring of your equine and it’s water trough, you can help your horse/ pony/donkey/mule stay hydrated through the weather challenges we face here in the mid-south.

Imogene Erb

A lifetime with horses

Ninety-six years ago America was in the height of the “Roaring Twenties.” Prohibition was in effect and there was a surge of economic prosperity before the looming Great Depression. It was 1926, the year Imogene Erb was born in Memphis, Tenn.

Mrs. Erb has had a lifetime with horses. Her first memory of being on a horse was when her uncle lifted her up and put her on the back of a polo pony.

They would ride down the streets in Memphis, near Central Avenue. Poplar Avenue was a gravel road at the time and most children in the area learned to ride on old polo ponies at a riding academy near Cherry Road.

“I’ve always remembered riding and driving,” said Mrs. Erb. She recalled her family’s old driving

horse that was a Thoroughbred Arabian cross. “We would just jump in the carriage and go. He was a very fine driving horse and took us everywhere.”

Mrs. Erb recalled what East Memphis and Germantown looked like during the time of her childhood and how horses were a staple for everyone who lived in the area. “Everyone we knew had horses. We would fox hunt from our front yard all the way to the Wolf River, passing through everyone’s properties. People just let us ride; it’s what we did.”

She and her friends would ride through Kirby Woods, now a neighborhood by MUS and Hutchinson schools in East Memphis, on their way to Germantown. She would meet close family friends, specifically Sonny Foster, who lived off Old Ger-

mantown Rd. near Wildwood Farm. Mrs. Erb is one of the last living founding members of the Germantown Charity Horse Show.

“We would ride the trails in Kirby Woods. There were old log cabins and ponds. The woods were very pretty and the trails kept us cool when we rode in the summer,” Mrs. Erb recalled Mrs. Erb’s home sits in the heart of East Memphis, off Poplar Avenue, on Briarcrest Road. The nineteen acres and home with sprawling white columns is hidden by woods that surround the property. As one turns in and drives up the wooded driveway the trees part and Mrs. Erb’s home comes into view.

“My mother purchased the property when I was 12 years old. My husband and I built this home 72

Equestrian Spotlight years ago.” She pointed towards the southeast corner of her property and said, “there use to be a large racing barn that sat on this property. You can still see the concrete foundation of the old barn over behind those trees.” The old thoroughbred racing barn burned several years before Mrs. Erb’s mother purchased the property.

The Erb property is a piece of history in Memphis.

Before Poplar Avenue was paved with asphalt in the 1930s, mule-driven wagons would carry goods down the avenue to the rural Shelby County farms that spanned to Collierville, Tenn. It was a two day trip from downtown Memphis to Collierville at the time. The wagon drivers and mules would stop at Eleven Miles Woods to rest overnight. Eleven Miles Woods is now Memorial Park Cemetery which sits about a mile and a half west of Mrs. Erb’s home.

Mrs. Erb attended boarding school in Middleburg, Virginia. Even when she was away at school she rode and fox hunted. Riding was a part of every aspect of her life from the time she was born and throughout her teenage years spent in Virginia.

She came across her hunter horse, Copper Cave, during a trip to Virginia. She rode him about six times before buying him. “The first fox hunt I rode him at he ran off with me,” Mrs. Erb said. She continued, “So, I rode him in the hunter ring. He was a big, fine chestnut and he made a wonderful hunter horse. We jumped 4ft courses and did very well. I just had to get him going and then be a good passenger. He would do anything.” Eventually, Mrs. Erb was able to fox hunt Copper Cave, in a snaffle, without being run away with in the hunt field.

Mrs. Erb was riding up until this past Christmas.

At 96 she is still able to drive weekly with Joanna Wilburn of Rollingwoods Farm. Even though Mrs. Erb cannot see well, Joanna serves as her eyes.

Weather permitting, every Tuesday morning is reserved for driving her pony Lacecap, a small gray Welsh pony cross. It is a way that Mrs. Erb is able to maintain her love of horses and work with Lacecap at least once a week. She has been driving Lacecap for about ten years.

Mrs. Erb and Joanna drive in the area behind her home. Her gardens of roses and hydrangeas surround the open grassy area where Joanna has Mrs. Erb practice driving circles, figure eights, and working and strong trots. Mrs. Erb listens and feels Lacecap through her reins as she drives. Even after 96 years with horses, Mrs. Erb’s face lights up when she picks up the reins. She laughs and smiles the entire time she drives. She listens intently to Joanna and trusts her to guide her and Lacecap through the open pasture.

Mrs. Erb has many stories of the horses that filled her life. She laughs about her Thoroughbred stallion, Derby, who liked to escape her property and graze in neighbors’ yards off Massey Road. She laughs at the idea of Derby walking through East Memphis, deciding which yard was ideal for him to graze. She also has many stories of accidents.

Falling off, carriage accidents and broken bones come with so many years of horses, but she always got back on or back in the carriage. Mrs. Erb is a piece of the Memphis area’s horse history. A history that helped shape the area with extensive culture,

shows, events and activities that still take place today. From her first memory of sitting on a horse to today at 96, Mrs. Erb’s passion for horses exudes through her eyes and her smile. She plans to drive and hopefully get back to riding again for the remainder of her days.

On the road to Tryon and Las Vegas

The blisteringly hot days of June did not keep Kayla Benson, a decorated show jumper from Collierville, TN, from conditioning and training Corville Z for the Markel/USHJA Zone Jumper Championships in Tryon, NC in late July, 2022. Even with the hot temperatures at home, Kayla and Corville Z

have been working extremely hard to be in the best possible shape for the competition.

Corville Z, owned by Pam Hill, is a 13- year- old Zangersheide gelding from Canada. He has a heart of gold and a desire to compete. Kayla and Zee have been a team for 5 years and have developed

a strong relationship, both in and out of the ring.

They both work very hard all year long to compete at top form. “Zee doesn’t love the heat, “ Kayla, a 20 - year -old equestrian at Oak View Stables in Olive Branch, MS, said in a recent interview. “I’m doing lots of conditioning with him to prepare him so we are at our best in Tryon.”

This is Kayla’s second year being invited to the prestigious event, but last year, her invitation came as a surprise. She qualified both Corville Z and her other mount Reba – owned by Trey Lawson – in 2021 and 2022. “I honestly didn’t even know anything about this competition until I got the email and read up on it,” Kayla said. Although she can only take one horse to the show due to the format of the competition, it is a huge testament to Kayla’s hard work that she has qualified both of her rides two years in a row.

Not only did Kayla take Corville Zee to a gold-medal team win at the jumper team championships last year, but she also qualified him for an invitation to the Marshall & Sterling Insurance USHJA 1.10/1.15M Adult Jumper National Championships and the Las Vegas National Horse Show in November 2021. “I never dreamed I would get an email that was like ‘Kayla Benson you’ve been invited to compete across the country in Las Vegas as one of the top 30 riders in the country.’ That was

Kayla is also hoping to qualify both Corville Z and Reba for the national championships in Las Vegas again in 2022.

TWO Completely different rides: Corville Z has been at Oak View for about 8 years, after Pam Hill and Trey Lawson traveled to Canada to try him. Pam had brought her then 5- yearold granddaughter, Lois, and Zee reached over to pull the girl’s cap off, subsequently winning Pam’s heart. Trey remarked at the time that he hoped the horse could jump, because he was pretty sure Lois picked him based on that alone.

Trey Lawson successfully rode him to many wins in the years he competed with Zee across the southeast. Most notably, earning great ribbons at venues like the Rolex stadium in Kentucky, Gulf Coast Classics at the Harrison County Fair Grounds, and several Jumper Classics. Eventually, Pam and Trey felt it was time for Zee to branch out into the hunter ring in preparation to become Lois’ mount. That is when Pam looked to Kayla, who has been riding at Oak View most of her life. “From the time I met her, when she was little, I just saw this courage she had,” Pam remembered. “And I thought, you know what? She can get this out of him. When she started riding him, I could tell they had a connection and Trey worked with her and the horse absolutely loved her. And you can see it.” However, as Kayla and Trey trained with Zee, it became obvious his heart was in the jumper ring, and Kayla’s was right there with him. They just light up when they are in the jumper ring. Indeed, even strangers who see Kayla and Zee in the ring can see what a good team

“I think that horse would walk through fire if I asked him to,” Kayla explained, adding that there’s never been a hint of hesitation. In fact, at the Germantown Charity Horse Show, she competed in sidesaddle events, even though she had not been training Zee for them.

“I have to brag on that a little bit,” Kayla said with her wide smile. “I had not sat on him sidesaddle since the Nashoba Carriage Classic in September, 2021. I just pulled him out on the first night and thought, ‘all right, bud, here we go.’ And he gave me his all.”

Kayla has the same connection with Reba, although the mare is a bit of a “wild child” compared to Zee. “They are two completely different rides,” she said. “I started riding Reba years ago after my personal horse was injured and had to be retired. It meant the world to me that Trey trusted me enough to share his horse with me.” When Reba and Kayla are in the ring, the bond between them is almost tangible. “I definitely put Reba in some sticky situations when I first started riding her, but she always got us out. She’s pushed me so far in my riding ability and I trust her with my life,” Kayla noted.

“I love watching Kayla ride and compete. Both Zee and Reba are such amazing horses,” Dottie Benson, Kayla’s mother and a regular volunteer at local shows, said. “Kayla and Zee are the epitome of elegance and grace and I’m drawn to them when they are in the ring. Reba and Kayla are fiery in the ring.

The Next Level: Benson’s success with Zee and Reba is a testament to how hard she works. Riding since she was little, Kayla has always had a passion for horses and loves riding and competing. She has always worked hard to achieve her goals, always striving to learn more and be better. Not only does she put in the hours at Oak View and compete regularly throughout the region, she is also a rising junior at The University of Mississippi, where she is the president of the Ole Miss Equestrian Club. The group regularly trains together and travels to competitions at the IHSA level. Kayla loves that not only does she get to be a part of the riding and competing side of the club, but also that they do a lot of charity work. As President, she is hoping to continue to grow the club over her final two years at the university.

“My goals leading up to championships are keeping Zee in the best shape possible while also maintaining Reba’s fitness level. I would love to be able to qualify them both to go to nationals this year,” Kayla said as they prepare for Tryon. “I’m a bit more comfortable going into it this year; it’s not such an unfamiliar place and I know how the competition works. I want to do better in the individual side of the championship competition, but win or lose it’s an honor to be invited, especially two years in a row. It’s still a big deal, and I’m not going to take anything for granted.”

In 2014, at the age of 24 years old, this 5th generation farmer returned to his roots on the family farm just east of Como, Mississippi. Marshall Bartlett and his brother, Jemison Bartlett, set about to transform the family farm that was founded in 1871. From the row crop and cow-calf operation they inherited, they developed a vertically integrated pasture-based livestock farm that breeds, grows, finishes, processes, packs, and retails their own animals. While their older sister, May Leinhart, who is based on her farm in New York, provides grant writing and research support to the family effort in Como.

The Bartlett family is driven by their desire to revitalize their land, ethically produce meat products (and soon eggs), and support the local, rural community they call home. Most of the members of their tight-knit team grew up in the Como area. Two are brothers. Most are long time team members. They feel it is the family environment and commitment to animal welfare that contribute to the exceptional quality of their products.

Faming is much more than caring for animals, It is a business. Cash flow can be a challenge for a newer, small company, so steady sales are essential.

Animals need to eat and staff need to be paid. Before 2020, Marshall notes, “90 percent of our business was to restaurants.” They quickly realized the need to shift focus to direct-to-consumers when many restaurants closed that year.

Farmers’ markets and their “monthly box” program augment the farm store, on-sight restaurant, and online orders. Agri-tourism adds a financial boost as well. Evenings featuring music and dinner, afternoon picnics, and farm stays in a cottage or “glamping” in a tent bring folks to the farm to experience animal agriculture in-person. Marshall has seen this on-farm experience create loyalty in their customer base.

Marshall and Jemison had a vision for their family farm. Vertically integrated farming is an old method that has become new again. Animals are born, raised, and processed in small groups that share the land in a multi-species rotational plan. Typically the beef are first to graze the acreage when the grass is tall and lush. They are followed by laying hens that live in large netted houses that can be moved across the land. Great Pyrenees dogs live with the chickens to keep predators away. The chickens scratch though the cow piles for worms and bugs, thus scattering this nutrient rich manure across the grass. In the cooler months, pigs follow the chickens on the pastures. They are useful in the fall when pastures are re-seeded because they dig up the dirt and help the grass seeds germinate. To stay cool in the warmer months, the pigs stay in the woods, which helps them stay cool and in turn helps keep the underbrush and weeds low. “It’s important to weigh the health and needs of the animals as well as the plants they eat,” Marshall adds as he explains their mob-style grazing

Farm Spotlight methods. In addition to improving the pastures, this style of farming actually sequesters more carbon into the soil than it emits making this a truly green operation.

Well cared for animals is vital to the mission at Home Place Pastures. Their commitment states,” We farm for the well-being of our animals, the health of our pastures, and to support the surrounding community.” Ethical meat production is verified by the several certifications they have obtained. Their slaughter and processing facilities are USDA inspected, which means every animal is harvested under the watchful eye of a federal inspector. All animal carcasses are also USDA inspected and graded. They are proud to be Certified Humane by the Global Animal Partnership, a process that required much paperwork and effort. To ensure the animals they raise from birth are humanely handled through all stages of life, the slaughter facility was designed with help from Dr Temple Grandin, a global expert in humane treatment of animals in the slaughtering process. For the Bartlett family, it’s not just a product. It’s a passion.

That passion was put to the test in February, 2021 when Minnesota- worthy, winter weather attacked the mid-south. Marshall lives near Memphis with his wife. Prepping for the extreme winter weather he packed up and stayed at the farm. He fought nature for nearly a week to keep the 400 pigs, 140 cows, many heavily pregnant, and new-born calves alive and water flowing. Midweek when he fell into bed he was sure the next morning would bring bad news, but his around the clock efforts paid off. Not a single animal perished in the epic battle against nature. Farming is not for the weak or faint of heart. It is a calling. It is a passion.

Marshall, his brother, and their entire team keep Home Place Pastures thriving. He finds time to write must-read blogs to tell their farm’s unique story to the surrounding communities. Pull your steak out of the refrigerator and let it come up to room temperature, about one hour.

While waiting for the steak to temper, get your grill hot.

Open up the steak package and season your steak liberally with salt and pepper.

Grill the steak on both sides until GBD (golden brown and delicious) While the steak is cooking on the second side throw in a knob of butter and a few cloves of crushed garlic on top of the steak. This allows the flavor to soak in while you’re cooking.

Cover the steak with the garlic butter until it is at your desired temp. We go for medium-rare at the restaurant.

When the steak is finished, place it on a wire rack over a sheet tray to rest.

While the steak is resting, in a small bowl, slice your shallots, add the vinegar and tomatoes and let it marinate for a few minutes.

Add the olive oil and parsley, season the salsa verde to taste.

Slice the steak against the grain, and put on a dinner plate.

Top the steak with the salsa verde/tomato mixture and season with fresh cracked pepper and flaky salt. Serve immediately!

How Horses Heal

Finding a place to heal Mental health and wellbeing have been a topic of concern for several years.

In 2020, when COVID-19 forced many to shelter at home and isolate away from family and friends, there was an uptick in mental illness prevalence according to Mental Health America, www.ahanational.org.

Mississippi was the second highest state for prevalence of mental health concerns. In 2020, 19% of Americans, equivalent to 47 million individuals, were struggling with some form of mental illness. About 5% of those were struggling from severe mental illness. According to SAMHSA, ìAny Mental Illness (AMI) is defined as having a diagnosable mental, behavioral, or emotional disorder other than a developmental or substance use disorder. Any mental illness includes persons who have mild, moderate, or serious mental illness.”

Today, MHA’s research reports, “Suicidal ideation continues to increase among adults in the U.S. Today, 4.58% of adults report having serious thoughts

of suicide, an increase of 664,000 people from 2021 dataset. The national rate of suicidal ideation among adults has increased every year since 2011. There was a larger increase seen in last year’s report and is a concerning trend to see following the COVID-19 pandemic.”

One of the major concerns MHA sees is a growing percentage of youth who are developing and living with major depression. They note “15.08% of youth experienced a major depressive episode in the past year, a 1.24% increase from last year’s dataset. In the bottom-ranked states, up to 19% of youth ages 12-17 experienced major depression.”

Mental health therapies have carried a stigma for many years. Traditional therapy has not been well received by past generations. Whether it has been a societal stigma, or self- stigma, the idea of clinical therapy for youth and adults can carry shame, which causes individuals to not seek help.

Equine therapy dates back to times horses were used for therapeutic riding in ancient Greek literature. In recent history the practice of companion animals showed improvement in well-being, quality of life, trust, self-efficacy, self-esteem, and a sense of accomplishment.

According to the National Library of Medicine The University of Arizona School of Medicine used horses in 2000 when a neurosurgery professor taught communication skills to healthcare clinicians (Walsh & Blakeney, 2013). Kane (2007), followed with a course titled, “Medicine and Horsemanship: Transforming the Doctor–Patient Relationship with Equine Assisted Learning at Stanford University School of Medicine.” She described increased awareness of the incongruence of intention versus behavior, confronting fear, mindfulness, focus and assertiveness. Today, Equine Assisted Therapy (EAT) as an intervention is increasing in popularity with significant positive results (White Lewis et al., 2017).

Here in the Mid-South there are many organizations and non-profits who educate and serve individuals and families through equine assisted therapies ranging from physical and occupational therapy to mounted and unmounted equine mental therapies.

Southern Reins Center for Equine Therapy: Southern Reins Center for Equine Therapy was founded in 2015. Their facility in Collierville, Tenn., sits on 35 acres and includes a 12-stall barn, attached covered riding arena, six turn out pastures, a Learning Center and an administrative building.

Since Southern Reins was founded, the organization has enhanced the quality of life for children and individuals with disabilities and hardships including Down syndrome, autism, multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy, amputation, cognitive and physical disabilities, trauma and more.

How do horses help individuals with these types of hardships? According to Southern Rein’s website, “working with horses can spark change in people with special needs. Horses encourage goal achievement and personal growth. Individuals who are involved with equine-assisted therapies are able to build confidence, enhance their physical activity, and improve cognitive function and communication by working and forming bonds with horses.”

Southern Reins have PATH Intl. certified riding instructors, AHA certified therapists and mental health professionals who lead mounted and unmounted sessions. Volunteers are the core of South-

ern Reins’ program. Since 2015 the organization has trained over 1,000 volunteers. That dedication of time, talent and encouragement is a treasured resource that contributes to the success of every participant.

According to Jill Haag, Executive Director, “everyone can make a difference. It doesn’t matter if you give a dollar or an hour of time. Everyone can help change a life.” And that is what Southern Reins is committed to do: change lives for the better by offering therapies to those with physical disabilities and mental health hardships.

Panther Creek Health: Panther Creek Health in Nesbit, Miss. is actively growing their mental health and sensory therapy programs. An Occupational Therapist recently joined the two licensed Mental Health Therapists and Panther Creek wants to add even more support for the mental health program.

Panther Creek’s Executive Director, Mylissa Horrocks, learned through her own personal experiences how horses have an incredible impact on mental health. Horrock’s daughter is a pediatric cancer survivor. When her daughter was going through cancer treatment she started to ride. The bond her daughter formed with Jasmine, her horse, gave them both some sense of control during a time when so much was out of their control. The bond they formed with Jasmine helped them both through the tough days and the uncertainty of cancer.

Working with horses has shown how the whole body connects with the mind and spirit. What sets Panther Creek apart with their therapy program is their focus on treating and serving individuals who have experienced trauma. According to Horrocks, “To heal from trauma one must activate healing in the body and the brain. Spending time outdoors and with animals connects the body to the mind by experiencing all the senses.”

Panther Creek utilizes their entire farm for therapy sessions. Walking outside, moving the body, feeling the breeze and environment on one’s face activates mindfulness. While one experiences that level of mindfulness, working with horses and other animals helps elevate that full body and mind connection. The horses help individuals with relationship building and communication. Individuals who have experienced trauma struggle with trust and relationships. Working with horses forces people to engage and communicate with the animal.

Through this engagement people are able to start building trust with the horse. This trust will then translate to building trust and relationships with

people.

Horrocks believes that traditional, clinical therapies may keep some people from seeking help or going to therapy because of the stigma mental health carries. At Panther Creek they see the outdoor, equine and eco therapy structure as a way to reach people who are not comfortable with traditional talk therapy.

In a peaceful environment people who have suffered from trauma are able to let their guard down and take full advantage of outdoor and sensory therapies offered through equine assisted therapy programs.

Horrocks believes that taking care of your mental health should be like taking your vitamins. People understand how important it is to be physically healthy and she is hopeful that people practice taking care of their mind and spirit just as much as taking care of their body.

WarHorses for Heroes: There are many causes of trauma in today’s world. Equine assisted therapies are showing high success rates in treating trauma. This is why WarHorses for Heroes in Olive Branch, Miss. launched their program in 2015. Two lifelong friends, Trey Lawson of Oak View Stables, and Pearson Allen, both had grandPhoto courtesy of Southern Reins fathers who served in WWII. When Lawson’s college roommate, Sean, returned from the Iraq war he realized how difficult it was for him to transition back into civilian life, especially while experiencing post traumatic stress disorder.

Lawson welcomed Sean to his farm, and he started noticing a difference in him after grooming and being around horses. Oak View Stables allowed Sean time to escape, relax and connect with horses. He started to heal and transition back to a non-military life. This fueled Lawson and Allen to launch the non-profit, WarHorses for Heroes.

Since 2015, more than 450 veterans have come through their program. Some of their volunteers are also veterans. Lawson feels veterans may decide to volunteer because some are unsure about the therapy process; but even volunteering is therapeutic.

Warhorses for Heroes partners with the Veterans Administration to help bring veterans into the program. Veterans have ranged in age from 18 to 70 years old.

Most veterans in their program are mid to late 30 years old. Lawson is always looking for good horses to use in their certified programs. They currently have four therapy horses and are working to train more for future sessions.

One of the main goals of WarHorses for Heroes is to introduce horses and the horse lifestyle to their participants. They don’t want veterans to experience their eight to ten week sessions and then move on. They want to surround their veterans with horses for the rest of their lives and give them the opportunity to be a part of a larger horse community. They ultimately want veterans to become part of their farm family and not just a place they came for therapy to treat PTSD. WarHorses for Heroes is currently working on a First Responder program as well. One message Lawson and his team at want to convey is that no one is alone in their journey. Everyone struggles and there are many men and women who experience hardships in life. The program is more than a place that offers therapy, it is a place to connect with people, other veterans, horses and an entire community.

Meadowthorpe Farms: Meadowthorpe Farms in Collierville, Tenn. has recently opened their farm to Monday Meditation Art Sessions. These sessions allow individuals to wind down and relax while they enjoy being around horses, a garden and open outdoor spaces. Lili Rostig leads Monday Mediation Mandela art sessions for attendees.

Rostig has a background in Psychology and Geography and a Master of Arts degree in Earth Sciences.

Rostig partnered with Meadowthorpe to have in-person sessions. Rostig said, “It’s healthy for the mind and spirit to let the creative/right side of the brain take over for a bit. Many people are so busy with jobs and families that they don’t get enough time for themselves to do something that helps them completely zen out and use their creative side. The Monday sessions are a great way for people to start the week off with a sense of calm and confidence in themselves.

It’s a chance for people to connect and socialize in a small group. It’s mostly adult women but we have had a few husbands and kids join in. The main goals are to get people thinking about their own lives from a creative perspective, to

give them the tools to create a mandala that reflects how they are feeling, and hold a safe space for people to be fully comfortable making art in.”

Combining art in a farm setting allows participants to enjoy being outdoors while learning more about natural horse behavior and gardening. Rostig said, “Many people don’t value time in nature, or aren’t able to enjoy nature because there are barriers preventing them. In this fast- paced society and as youth become addicted to screens, it is more important than ever to get outside and be creative in nature. From a Psychology perspective I was able to understand how experiencing nature impacts the brain’s neurotransmitters and how critical it is for mental health.”

Research is showing how the outdoors and horses help ignite change in those who participate in equine assisted therapies. As mental health stigmas lessen and more people put their overall health first, the mid-south equestrian communities are helping many people, from all walks of life, heal through horses.

Traditional talk therapy may not be the structure a child, adult or veteran needs to help work through physical and mental health hardships. However, equine therapies can be life changing for people of all ages, from all backgrounds. 5th Annual Freestate Bull Blowout The 5th Annual Freestate Bull Blowout took place on July 9th in Charleston, Ms and was full of bull riding action put on by Justin Dickerson and Buckwild Bucking Stock. The bulls were in charge most of the night except for the two qualifying rides. Mr. Braydon Smith who is 14 and fresh from competing at the Cinch National JR High School Finals in Georgia, won the junior riders event with a score of 56 on a bull from the Moore Cattle Co.. In the pro rounds, Mr. Lucas Wade Mooningham had the winning ride, with a score of 90 points on a bull named Freddy.

BuckWild Bucking Stock hosted the Buckin’ Thangs & Chicken Wangs bull riding competition in Como Ms, Sunday July 17th. With 24 total riders there was a lot of action from the Moore Cattle Co. junior bull riders and local bull riders.
