THE MEMOIR OF FRED KIPP’S LIFE AND EXPERIENCES IN BASEBALL

Fred Kipp (BSE 1953-Mathematics) is an ESU alum who has lived a life many of us imagine, but few experience. From an early age, he was enthralled with sports. That passion turned into scholarship opportunities. He initially attended Kansas State University on scholarship to play basketball. Almost immediately, he realized he needed to be at a school where he could play more than one sport. He transferred to Kansas State Teachers College, where he could also play for the baseball team and the rest is sports history.

From college, his career took him to the semi-pro leagues, the winter leagues and ultimately the majors. Through the course of his career, he would play for the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers as well as the New York Yankees. Fred Kipp is the only living player with the distinct honor of playing for both the Yankees and the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Now, Fred and his son Scott have written a book by that name, “The Last Yankee Dodger.” It is a title that distinguishes his baseball career from others, placing him in an epic era of baseball. In this memoir, the once small town boy shares what his road to major league baseball entailed. It was a journey of hard work, challenges and unbelievable experiences—from playing for the Caribbean leagues to being part of the 1956 Dodger Goodwill Tour of Japan. Throughout his incredible career, Fred stayed humble. As he is known to say, “I was never the best, but I played with, and against, the best.”

For Fred and his son Scott, the experience of writing this book did more than just share the story of Fred’s life with the world, it gave them the opportunity to know each other better. Scott says it has been one of the most important experiences of his life.

Luckily for the rest of us, we can read “The Last Yankee Dodger” so that we can all share in that experience.

To adequately tell the story of Emporia State University’s Cactus Connection, it’s necessary to time-warp back to the late 1960s when Dave Bingham (BS 72-Physical Education, MS 73-Physical Education) and Rich Alday (BS 71-Physical Education, MS 73-Physical Education), two Tucson, Arizona, natives, played Hornet baseball for Larry Cochell.

“This Arizona-Kansas connection was a good thing for everybody who experienced it,” Villaescusa recalled.

A few years after they graduated, Bingham and Alday found themselves coaching baseball teams: Bingham returning to Emporia State, and Alday starting a baseball program back in Tucson at Pima Community College.

To celebrate their past success and rekindle their link with Emporia State, Villaescusa and other baseball alumni— Darrell Alexander (BS 80-Social Sciences), brothers Joe (BSB 85-Business Administration) and Fred Riesgo (Former Student 76-78) along with their cousin Tom Riesgo (BS 81-Industrial Education) and Hans Raymond (BSE 81-Physical Education) have hosted the Cactus Connection, an ESU baseball benefit golf tournament in Tucson the past three years. The event has raised around $12,000 a year, which the group donates to Hornet Baseball’s Winning Edge Fund.

Say hello to the Cactus Connection, through which more than 60 Arizona students have attended college and played baseball at ESU. “When Richard’s guys were done with their two years at Pima and wanted to keep playing, the pipeline allowed them to transfer to Emporia State,” explained Pete Villaescusa, himself a beneficiary of that conduit that allowed him to earn undergraduate (Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration) and graduate (MBA) degrees from ESU. Along with earning college degrees, Villaescusa and his baseball teammates were part of something notable—their Bingham-coached team won the 1978 NAIA National Championship.

“It was the first time for most of us to leave home, and it had a big impact on the way our lives turned out. I married a girl I met back there, and several of my teammates did as well.”

“We want to get more corporate sponsors for the tournament this year, which we hope will enable us to turn some of the proceeds into scholarships for Arizona students who want to play baseball at Emporia, like we did,” Villaescusa explained.

This year’s event will be June 1, 2019, at Tucson’s Randolph Golf Course, a municipal course in central Tucson.

WEAVER PREPARES TO RETIRE AS THE TEACHERS COLLEGE DEAN Walk through the corridors of Emporia State University’s Visser Hall—or practically anywhere else on the ESU campus, for that matter—and it won’t be long before you encounter the enthusiastic smile and shake the outstretched hand of Dr. Ken Weaver.

As dean of The Teachers College since June 2012 and a recipient of the Roe R. Cross Distinguished Professorship in 1999, Weaver has served as advocate-in-chief for the college’s mission of preparing classroom teachers and physical and mental health professionals. It’s a many-faceted role, supporting elementary and secondary education, along with a variety of programs and initiatives serving to strengthen and compliment the teaching profession. The Teachers College includes nationally recognized and accredited undergraduate and graduate programs in athletic training, art therapy, clinical counseling, health and human performance, psychology, sports leadership and recreation, rehabilitation, and instructional design and technology.

After a two-year stint as a Peace Corps volunteer for rural public health education in the Philippines, Weaver taught science to seventh and eighth graders in his hometown, Aiken, South Carolina.

Upon completing his doctorate from Columbia University, Emporia State was Ken Weaver’s first job in higher education when he came to the campus in the fall of 1986. “How fortunate for me that my first job in higher education was at Emporia State!” he reflected during an interview for this profile.

“ESU’s collegial and collaborative environment for teaching, learning, scholarly activity and service has been consistently nurturing, and its high expectations commensurate with offering the best education for its students.”

It’s a formula that has cemented The Teachers College’s reputation as one of the leading centers for teacher education in the country. Weaver says four components work together to achieve that recognition, “First, ESU is blessed to have faculty who are passionate about preparing educators. A second element is the amount of time our teacher candidates spend in the field engaged in classroom teaching. Third, preparing our teachers includes partnering with mentors and cooperating teachers who are essential to the final polishing of our students. And finally, experienced educators watch our students teaching and evaluate them several times during the student teaching semester.”

Benefitting from the generosity of donors, Dr. Weaver and The Teachers College have created numerous scholarship funds and literacy-encouraging developments in the past few years.

Best-selling author James Patterson has, since 2013, funded 16 full scholarships for teacher education majors each year. And, the Kansas Masonic Literacy Center partners with elementary schools to fund reading improvement plans for elementary schools around the state. Further, the Lattner Family Foundation funds a scholarship for student teachers, and Dr. Weaver has worked with several donors like Mildred Caldwell to establish planned gifts benefitting The Teachers College.

Weaver will transition to retirement in June 2019, and a search for the new dean has begun. “I’ll be on phased retirement for two years supporting the new dean, teaching a course, and, for the spring 2020 semester, supervising graduate teaching assistants in psychology,” he said.

“The last seven years have been trying for public education at both the PK-12 and post-secondary levels with persistent budget cuts,” Weaver noted, in spelling out the opportunities his successor will face.

“The new dean will be working with other university leaders to advocate for more resources for Emporia State and The Teachers College. This will be a good opportunity for creating relationships with state legislators, especially members of the House and Senate Education Committees. The new dean will also be working with the ESU Alumni Association and Foundation to engage with alumni and donors.”

Weaver and his wife, Kathy, plan to remain in Emporia.

“I’m a proud Hornet and look forward with excitement and enthusiasm to the many wonderful changes coming to the university in the future.” spring 2019

Ken Weaver’s story is one of encouraging, guiding and serving, as seen through the eyes of three of his colleagues in The Teachers College: Jim Persinger (BA 88-Psychology & Sociology; MS 90-Psychology) came to Emporia State as a transfer student in 1986, the same year Weaver started teaching at ESU. “I quickly learned to seek out all courses that he taught, as his energy and enthusiasm made his difficult courses in statistics, research design and cognitive psychology seem surmountable.

He clearly loved his work and the field of psychology, and that motivated us to want more. He was a great mentor to many students, including myself, which is one reason I stayed in the Department of Psychology through an M.S. degree.”

Now a professor of Psychology and chair of the Psychology department, Persinger said Weaver helped him understand how to accomplish his professional goals. “I’ve particularly appreciated Ken Weaver’s hand at the helm in recent years, as the Regents institutions have had to weather lean times and shrinking resources. His deep knowledge of our institution, advocacy for teacher education, focus on the strategic plan, and collaborative style have left The Teachers College well positioned for the future.”

Amanda Lickteig notes Weaver’s support of high-impact opportunities for teacher candidates, such as international student teaching opportunities and one-on-one technology initiatives. “Since 2014, 20 elementary and secondary education students have participated in a four-week student teaching placement, and, thanks to additional funding opportunities provided by Dr. Weaver's office and the Office of International Education, four additional students have been approved to participate in spring 2019. Additionally, in conjunction with the Kathrine K. White Faculty Incentive Grant and the Department of School Leadership/Middle & Secondary Teacher Education, the dean’s office provided funding so that all Phase 1 secondary education students would have access to their own personal Chromebook for the duration of their Phase 1 semester.”

Zeni Colorado-Resa, associate professor and chair of Instructional Design and Technology, says it’s been an incredible experience working with Weaver over the years.

“I first came to Emporia State in August 2003, not as a faculty member, but as director of Academic Technology and Multimedia Services. I came to Emporia State while still working on my dissertation for my doctorate. When looking for someone to help me with the study methodology, everyone directed me to see Ken, who at the time was department chair for Psychology. He was very helpful, and I remember leaving his office, feeling much more comfortable with the methodology for my study. I knew at that time, if I ever needed additional help, he was going to be a tremendous mentor.”

Experience Builds g n i d n a t s r e Und HONORS STUDENT REFLECTS ON THE IMPACT OF HER JOURNEY TO UGANDA

By Victoria Goetzinger BS 2020-Sociology While my heart has always been set on new adventures and personal growth, I never imagined that I would have the opportunity to travel over 8,000 miles away from my home, family and friends to embark on one of the most impactful learning experiences of my young life.

Throughout my month in Uganda, our American team of 11 students and three adults traveled across the country interacting with hundreds of ethnically diverse Ugandans with assistance from our native friends. Each place we traveled to had a unique story, and the people had an individual lens through which they viewed the world. Every story and experience touched my heart in a new way, but the ones that I constantly think about today are those of accessibility.

The passion behind our work with the people of Uganda was rooted in our desire to create change for the common good; a desire that was cultivated by our professors and classmates. I witnessed my favorite African Proverb unfold before my very eyes: If you want to go fast go alone, if you want to go far go together.

“You are not a tourist, and this is not a vacation!” That is what we tell students as they prepare to go to Uganda. The place changes you. The children in particular capture your heart and never give it back. As you can tell from Victoria’s comments, going to Uganda and working for the people there is the ultimate high-impact learning experience. Those students who go are transformed into kinder, humbler, more grateful people who never see the world in the same way again."

While there are not enough words or feelings to properly describe my experience in Uganda, my time there taught me so much about myself and my abilities and more importantly it deepened my desire to serve and learn.

While in Ruboni, a small village in the Rwenzori mountains, we worked with the Rwenzori Child Care Initiative. Many of the villagers, especially younger ones, had never been more than a mile or two from their homes. Living among the community, I quickly saw the beauty of their lifestyle and culture, but also saw the additional barriers that they had to overcome in terms of access to education, shelter, food and economic opportunities.

In Rick Ginter’s dictionary, though, this word’s definition comes attached to the beaming grin of one of his star athletes, Heather Leverington.

Ginter coached the Rosalia, Kansas, native as her Emporia State University track and field career honors multiplied during her time on campus in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

By the time she graduated in 2002, Heather Leverington (BS 02-Recreation) was a five-time national champion in the shot put, and set the NCAA Division II national outdoor meet record in shot twice in her career. In 2012, she was inducted into Emporia State's Athletic Hall of Honor.

“This girl…every time somebody says ‘You can’t,’ she says, ‘I’m going to,’” Ginter marvels, even 16 years after he last coached her at ESU. But nowhere has Leverington’s determination been tested more than in battling severe health problems that would sideline most people—issues that even her doctors marveled at, viewing her badly-scarred lungs following a double-lung transplant operation in 2016.

“They said that my work ethic to keep going no matter how bad I was feeling had allowed me to hide how sick I really was,” Leverington admitted in a December 2018 interview.

A progression of health concerns began in 2004. Her muscle aches and joint pain were initially diagnosed as lupus, an autoimmune disorder in which a person’s immune system mistakenly attacks healthy cells.

Three years later, she became the head coach for the men’s and women’s track and field teams at Lock Haven University (LHU), a Division II school in central Pennsylvania.

Breathing problems developed, leading to a diagnosis of polymyositis, a rare inflammatory disease that causes muscle weakness. In Leverington’s case, complications included lung involvement, leading doctors to tell her that a lung transplant would be necessary in the future.

The disease advanced to the point where oxygen therapy was a requirement. As was coaching from a wheelchair.

“Trying to coach day in, day out was a challenge,” Leverington admitted. “I worked very hard to keep it a secret how bad my health really was, something I can attribute to my athletic background and my mindset.”

In March 2016, Leverington was placed on a list for a doublelung transplant. One set of lungs became available two weeks later, but they turned out not to be viable. The wait resumed, and Leverington continued coaching.

When a second set of lungs became available in November 2016, doctors asked Leverington if she would be part of research on a new method of preserving and preparing donor lungs for transplant, called Ex Vivo Lung Perfusion (EVLP).

"Every time somebody says ‘You can’t,’ she says, ‘I’m going to!’”

The procedure involved airlifting the donor lungs to United Therapeutics Corporation’s Lung Bioengineering Laboratory in Silver Spring, Maryland, where the organs were connected to a machine that pumped them with fluids and nutrients to help heal the tissue, then flying the lungs back to the hospital in Pittsburgh, where Leverington underwent a 12hour operation to receive the lifesaving organ transplant on Election Day, Nov. 8.

“We stayed three weeks in the hospital, then another month in Pittsburgh,” Leverington said, noting that she was able to go home to Lock Haven for good on Dec. 31.

She returned to her coaching job at LHU in September 2017.

And, for the first time since her college days, Leverington is competing in track and field events. This time, though, the competition has a special meaning.

She entered the Transplant Games of America in Salt Lake City, Utah, this past August, competing with other individuals who have undergone transplant surgeries.

Leverington took home gold medals in shot put, her college specialty, and discus. She earned a silver medal in the softball throw.

“It’s quite an emotional trip, but it was good to hear from people who, like me, are recovering from transplants.”

What’s next? Leverington has her sights set on NewcastleGateshead, England, where the World Transplant Games will be staged in August 2019. “I’m planning on competing there, as long as I can stay healthy,” Leverington says.

And for her former coach, Leverington’s story has come full circle.

“She was put on this Earth to inspire,” says Rick Ginter. “And, she’s doing just that.”

HOW ONE PROFESSOR’S PASSION FOR PHYSICS LAUNCHED HIS STUDENT ON A PATH TO THE STARS As Brian (BS 1976-Physical Science) and Jill Tichenor made their plans for retirement, they began working with an attorney to set up their estate. The attorney asked them the standard questions, including what they wanted to happen to their estate when they were gone. It was a question that sparked some soul searching for the couple. After mulling over the decision, Brian knew one thing for sure; it had to do something that benefitted others.

“That was my thinking. I want to find something that this money will do that will do some good.”

In searching for the solution, he found himself taking stock of the entirety of his career. It was a career spent as a materials engineer working for the military and commercial entities before arriving at his greatest passion, working for NASA. As he retraced the map of his life, sorting each twist and turn, he found it all reaching back to the days of his youth.

“You think, ‘Well, how the heck did I get here in the first place?’ That was when I had to go back and think about who it was who got me on the right road. Jim Calvert is one of the most important people in my life when it comes to that.”

The thought experiment, prompted by the attorney’s question, would ultimately lead Brian and Jill to create two incredible legacy gifts for Emporia State.

“Jill continues to inspire me. When she found out what I wanted to do, she said ‘Oh, I want in on this.’”

Together, they created the James Calvert Endowed Professorship in Physical Sciences and the Physical Sciences Summer Camp Program. The first gift will fund a professorship honoring the man Brian credits with guiding him on his career path, and the second will provide funding for a program that was pivotal in determining Brian’s educational direction.

“You think, ‘Well, how the heck did I get here in the first place?’

That was when I had to go back and think about who it was who got me on the right road."

If you were just meeting Jim Calvert for the first time, you would have no trouble seeing the professor he was for 32 years at Emporia State. His love for science and teaching still burns brightly.

Born and raised in New Orleans, Jim was in ROTC during his time as an undergraduate at LSU, then spent three years in the Air Force after college. At the conclusion of his time in the military, he went to K-State to pursue his doctorate, a degree he would ultimately choose not to complete.

The year was 1966. The United States was deeply engaged in battling the Russians in a space race. As a result, science education was receiving a great deal of attention, and physics teachers were in high demand.

The department chair at K-State suggested to Jim that he apply his talents to teaching, and informed him of an opening at Emporia State, then known as Kansas State Teachers College.

Jim took that advice, applied and was hired.

“When I started teaching the school was very oriented toward teaching, and it fit me personally in ways I didn’t expect. I fell in love with teaching…I couldn’t have had a better career.”

In a few short years, Jim’s love of his work would aid a young Brian Tichenor in steering his path toward his own dream career.

“I first met Jim Calvert in ’71. It was at the National Science Foundation program called the Summer Science Training Program. It was held there on campus in the Physical Sciences department…We got to take classes, lectures and labs from the professors there and have some social time with them as well,” recalls Brian. spring 2019

For Brian, investing that summer before his senior year of high school at science camp would introduce him to the school he would choose for his bachelor’s studies and the advisor and mentor who would help him define his goals and major.

It also offered him a taste of what studying science in an environment with small classes and more personalized instruction could offer, and as a college student, that became a critical component to his educational advancement.

“The thing that is most effective is the personal contact with the professors. It is something you would never get at the larger universities. The ability to go through fairly simple experiments with a professor is an eye-opening experience…

It makes it more realistic.”

As Brian worked on his undergraduate degree with Jim Calvert as his advisor and instructor, he began to see where he wanted science to take him.

“I didn’t study much physics in high school. I started out with a major in chemistry, and I took general chemistry and organic and then realized it probably wasn’t the best choice for me…That’s when I had sophomore physics with Jim Calvert, and that’s when I decided to change my major to physics.”

“A lot of teaching physics is presenting it in a way that it can be related to, and he really excelled at that. That is something that he could do. He made it look easy, and for him, I think it was easy. He was excellent.”

But, it is not just in the classroom that Professor Calvert made an impact on Brian. As an advisor, he took care to make certain Brian had the courses he needed when he needed them.

“I think he took the measure of me carefully and didn’t get too far ahead of things. I would take one course, he would see how I was faring with it and then he would select another course for me to take. I took a lot of physics in a short time there.”

It was a responsibility that Jim Calvert took very seriously.

“I really did enjoy advising, because I thought that was where it all started. I felt that advising was at least as important as teaching. If you don’t get the right courses, you are just wasting semesters.”

After completing his bachelor’s degree, Brian pursued his master’s and then hired on with Boeing. He worked on metallurgical failure analysis and material science, advancing his knowledge and his prospects, and rising in his field. His work would also provide him the opportunity to mentor others. It was a responsibility he relished because it had been so crucial in his own life.

Over time, he changed companies to move into a design support role. Before long, an incredible offer came his way.

“About halfway through my career, I had the opportunity to switch over to space programs. It was just after the Challenger explosion, and Congress had ordered up another space shuttle. The company I worked for was a contractor on the space shuttle and built the leading edges for the wings.”

“During the process, we also participated in a contract with the space station. At one point, I was working on both the shuttle and the space station and ended up leading a team of engineers on the space station to design, test and build thermal control systems for the station.”

“Eventually, it got me a Silver Snoopy award. That was a nice honor, but it also landed me my next job. That’s kind of the thing with engineering: One success leads to another job. The next job waiting for me was the Orion spacecraft, the new NASA-manned spacecraft. I worked my last seven years on that, again training young engineers and helping design, test and build hardware.”

Brian could not have asked for a better career path, for it was work he enjoyed more than he could have imagined.

“It is unreal. I was born in Hutchinson, and they’ve got the Cosmosphere there. From early on, I would be going over there and seeing the Apollo hardware and thinking ‘Wow, this is pretty far out, far-fetched.’ I could never have imagined I would be going to Kennedy Space Center to work for months at a time. It was quite an awesome career.”

The Silver Snoopy is an award the astronauts present for outstanding performance contributing to flight safety and mission success.

Jim Calvert’s passion for teaching helped to spark Brian’s life pursuits, and Brian spent his working life sharing that exuberance for physics and engineering with the engineering teams he led.

For Brian and Jill, it is important to ensure future scientists and engineers have the opportunity to explore science in the same way that Brian did. They have made a gift through their estate that will fund an endowed professorship. This professorship will help Emporia State to recruit and retain engaged professors like Jim Calvert. They have also dedicated funding for a summer science camp program, like the one Brian attended, so that curious students can get a taste of what the study of science has to offer.

Jim Calvert can’t believe the honor they have bestowed on him. At a recent celebration recognizing the importance of these gifts, he shared his belief that any of the professors at ESU are equally worthy of this honor.

“I am standing here because Brian feels he got a first-class education at Emporia State. He chose to be a physics major, and so I am here. But, he could have chosen to be something else—a chemist, a mathematician, a biologist—and I think someone else would be standing here. I think what Brian is saying, is not that I was that, I think what he is saying is that we were that.”

Endowed professorships provide the opportunity to honor a faculty member and make a long-term impact on the student experience at Emporia State. HOW ONE ALUM IS TACKLING DISPARITY AND PROVIDING OPPORTUNITIES IN BANGLADESH His name means life, but at 11 years old, Jibon says he doesn’t know the meaning of life; he only knows the struggle to survive.

While describing his experience to Zahidul Karim (MBA 2016), the founder and Chairman of Green Survivors Bangladesh, Jibon explained his situation. His family lives in poverty. His father is very sick and incapable of working.

His mother works as a maid, but her earnings are not nearly enough to feed their family. So, Jibon works on the street, selling coffee and tea.

No matter what.

In the heat.

In the rain.

Not working means less food or no food. There is no room for studies and education. That, Jibon says, is for rich people.

He must spend his time working to get the essentials. He has always dreamed of being educated, of having a different life. But he thought that dream would never come true. He thought it was impossible for him to be like other children.

Jibon’s experience is typical for the street children of Bangladesh. Some stories are even harsher. Many have lost a parent. Some have lost both. They live on the streets, often begging, struggling to find a way to earn money for food.

They are vulnerable to criminal elements that often prey upon them.

Zahidul Karim, Assistant Professor and Chairperson in the Department of Management Studies at Jahangirnagar University, worried about these children.

“I wanted to do something for society, basically for the most underprivileged or underserved community, who are deprived because of limited resources. So I thought of the children.”

During his time at ESU studying for his MBA, he continued to ponder a way to make a change in the lives of these children.

He spoke with one of his instructors, Dr. Mohammed Sajedur Rahman, Assistant Professor of Information Systems and the Director of Placement Services for School of Business.

“When I was in the United States, I was mapping in my mind what should I do. I was doing a lot of brainstorming. I shared my idea with Dr. Rahman. He said, if you can do this, it will really be very good…When you return, just communicate with me, and I will try to help you.”

These conversations with Dr. Rahman and other colleagues and friends at ESU helped Zahidul solidify his plan. And Dr. Rahman did stay involved. He is an advisor and an active contributor to the organization.

After graduating with his MBA in spring of 2016, Zahidul returned to Bangladesh. On July 17th, 2016, with the help of friends, colleagues and some of his students at Jahangirnagar University, he created Green Survivors Bangladesh, a charitable organization with ambitious objectives. Their aim is to aid underprivileged street children through a threephase process.

“The first phase is to give them a basic education so that they can read and can write. At the same time, we help them learn social values and social norms so they can develop their morals and interpersonal skills.”

They also provide much-needed basics of food and clothing.

This is a critical part of the success of this organization.

“Without food or clothing, there is no motivation for these kids to go to school,” Zahidul explained.

For children who are sleeping out on the streets, they simply can’t spare the time to go to school, when they could be doing something else to get the food they need. And that is why the nutritious meals and clothing are critical to encouraging the children to attend.

The second phase of assistance that Green Survivors Bangladesh wants to provide students is to give them a technical education.

“So that they know how to run a business, how to operate a computer, how to work as a mechanic or technician. In the third phase, we give them some funds or capital so that they can start their own business.”

The goal, Zahidul explains, is self-reliance. To give these children the tools they need to lift themselves out of poverty and change the course of their lives.

Zahidul has plans to bring these opportunities to more children. He is working with the Ministry of Social Welfare for permission to expand their services to locations across Bangladesh. Currently, their organization is based out of Jahangirnagar University and is only serving the children in the immediate area. But there are children throughout the country in need of this assistance. He also hopes to raise enough money to have some full-time teachers. At this time, the organization is operated entirely by volunteers.

Despite all the hard work ahead, Zahidul seems undaunted.

He is truly a man with a mission.

“I thought if I can teach them and provide them support, then they can become an important part of society; they can contribute to society. If I can do something like that, not only will our society benefit, but humanity will benefit. In every religion, it says that if you do for people or society, even for the creatures, this is the blessing thing and you will have inner peace. This is what I always felt.”

Jibon has been taking part in classes for one and half years.

He says now he is “no longer living in darkness.” He feels like life for him can now include happiness. As proof of how much his thinking is changing, he now wants to be an entrepreneur.

He wishes that this organization could grant merit-based scholarships, or organize a competition to earn them.

“These kids, they are very intellectual. They are very sharp.

When he talked like this, I was surprised…They are very creative, very innovative. If we could nurture their thinking, their brainstorming, I think they have a lot of creativity.” says Zahidul.

That is the epitome of what Zahidul wants—to give these children the tools and support they need to save themselves.

Hornet Football SETS RECORDS ON WAY TO BOWL VICTORY

Emporia State football enjoyed a record-setting year capped off with a victory at the Corsicana Bowl in Texas. With a final season record of 8-4, the 2018 team claimed winning records in each of the four years the seniors played together. And, as the celebration began in Texas, the following records were being inked: • Quarterback Braxton Marstall threw a school record 87 touchdown passes, breaking Brent Wilson's previous mark of 84 set from 2012-15.

• Marstall compiled 11,156 yards of total offense for second in career total offense in MIAA history.

• The quarterback finished the season with 3,049 passing yards, the fifth 3,000 yard passing season in ESU history.

• Landon Nault became the first Hornet since Tyler Paul in 2003 to gain 1,000 yards in a season, ending with 1,008 yards.

• 2018 was the first time in Emporia State history a player passed for 3,000 yards and another player ran for 1,000 yards in the same season.

With these accolades, it’s no surprise that Marstall earned a nomination for the Harlon Hill Trophy for the best player in NCAA Division II football.

After two rounds of voting by the sports information directors at the 166 NCAA Division II football-playing institutions, Marstall finished seventh. Marstall also was named to the 2018 D2Football.com All-America Team as honorable mention and Conference Commissioners Association SecondTeam All-Super Region 3. Hornet Soccer MAKES PROGRAM HISTORY Our ESU soccer team made history with its 2018 season.

The Hornets recorded the best season in school history with a record of 14-6-1 and 8-3 in the MIAA. They finished as the No. 3 seed heading into the MIAA Tournament and hosted their first-ever postseason match at the ESU Pitch, where they defeated Northeastern State to advance to the MIAA semi-final match for the second time in program history.

Emporia State finished the season with a perfect 8-0 record at home. The Hornets received the No. 5 seed in the Central Region to advance to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. They finished their season in the first round with a 2-1 loss to Minnesota State.

In addition to having our best season yet, our fans and players also enjoyed some exciting upgrades to the ESU soccer pitch – a new wrought iron fence surrounding the field and bleachers and a portable, covered press box.

Emporia State is grateful for the private gifts that made these improvements possible!

New Tennis Complex SET TO BE ONE OF A KIND A new, unprecedented indoor-outdoor tennis complex will elevate the men’s and women’s tennis programs, enhance the northwest entrance to campus and provide an economic stimulus to Emporia through targeted athletic events. The $3.2 million Kossover Family Tennis Complex is a first-ever facility of this size in the MIAA conference.

The new complex will feature six new championship-quality tennis courts—two indoor and four outdoor. It will house the tennis teams’ locker rooms, coaches’ office, players’ lounge, student-athlete study area, indoor court viewing deck and outdoor patio. Most importantly, it provides an on-campus, cold-weather tennis training center, a valuable resource that

no other MIAA tennis program offers. Alumni and former ESU student-athletes Greg Kossover (BSB 85-Accounting) and Ken Hush (BSB 82-Business Administration) launched the project with the first major gifts as a way to both give back to the program and coaches who influenced them and to elevate Emporia State. Construction will begin once the final 30 percent of financing is committed.

(MS 76-Counselor Education) Brown-Henderson has spent much of her career building on a foundation laid by her father, the Rev. Oliver L. Brown.

In 1988, Brown-Henderson established and is president of the Brown Foundation for Educational Equity, Excellence and Research, and also owns and operates an educational consulting firm, Brown & Associates. In 2001, she gained support from Congress for the Brown vs. Board of Education 50th Anniversary Presidential Commission.

She has been honored with the National Education Association's Friend of Education Award, the National Alliance of Black School Educators' Lifetime Achievement Award, the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund Award of Excellence, and the Fight for Justice Award from Southern University Law Center.

BRIAN E. CATHERS, PH.D.

(BS 92-Chemistry) Cathers is leading the way in drug discovery and development for global pharmaceutical company Celgene.

He has direct responsibility for the company's Disease Biology, Discovery Biology and Proteomics groups.

Research by Cathers and the teams he leads has spanned treatments for cancer, fibrotic, autoimmune and infectious diseases and in vitro safety assessment. He accepted a position at Celgene and became executive director of the company's Protein Homeostasis Thematic Center of Excellence in 2015.

Among his awards and honors are a 1993 National Institute of Health Pre-Doctoral Fellowship, the 1996 Irsay-Dahle Award for Excellence in Medicinal Chemistry, the Axys Recognition Award, ESU's 2001 Outstanding Recent Graduate Award, and the 2005 Celgene M.V.P. award.

ROSE M. HAGGERTY

(BSE 74-Physical Education) Haggerty is the executive director of the Texas Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance in Austin. Haggerty developed a nationally recognized curriculum for health and physical education, was cochair of the Healthy Schools, Healthy Kids initiative, and spearheaded creation of the Student School Health Advisory System and the Peer Leader Group. She has secured millions of dollars in government grants to enhance nutrition, health and physical education programs. Haggerty's awards include the 2013 E.B. Henderson Award of the American Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance and being named in 2005 to the Health, Physical Education and Recreation Alumni Hall of Fame at Emporia State.

(BSE 63-Art) Johnson retired in 2009 as dean of the College of Arts and Humanities at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Illinois. He has participated in more than 90 regional and national juried and invitational exhibitions, exhibited large-scale public sculptures throughout the Midwest, and was one of five sculptors chosen for a research project at the University of Costa Rica.

He also was an artist-in-residence at Anderson College in Indiana and guest instructor at Texas Tech University and the Penland School of Arts and Crafts in North Carolina. He received the 2006 Studs Terkel Humanities Service Award from the Illinois Humanities Council and was named Person of the Year in 2009 by the Daily Eastern News.
