Corky’s Cupboard, ESU’s campus food pantry, turns five years old this year, and Associated Student Government has big plans to raise more food donations for it than ever before. This year, they are launching ‘Together, We Can,’ a campaign to raise awareness of the issue of food insecurity on campus in conjunction with ‘Can The Bods,’ the annual fundraising competition against Washburn University.

Corky’s Cupboard is located in Memorial Union Room 147, in the back (south end) of the Center for Student Involvement. The pantry provides a variety of non-perishable food items such as canned fruits, vegetables, proteins, snacks, soups, meals and mixes, and grains and starches such as rice, noodles and pasta. It is open to fulltime and part-time students.

It started five years ago because the university recognized a need among the student population. “It was a group of passionate people who knew there was a lot of need,” says Blythe Eddy (BFA 97-Communication, MS 00-Counselor Education), director, Student Activities and Community Service, Center for Student Involvement.

“We started a committee. We decided to research other institutions, and we surveyed our students in the spring of 2014. The survey showed enough need that we thought ‘we have to do something now.’

On November 3, 2014, we opened with the Grand CanOpening.”

Close to half of the donations that sustain the food pantry are raised during the ‘Can The Bods’ competition. Not only does the competition provide much-needed pantry items at Emporia State, but it also helps to spread the word to students who are struggling with food insecurity about this resource they can use. Says Blythe, “I’m sure the partnership and being able to say 'Can the Bods' food goes to Corky’s Cupboard helps because it gets the words on the lips of a lot of people around campus and that’s what we want. We want people to know there is an on-campus food pantry for all. It is for all students. We tell faculty and staff look for the signs of students who need extra help or food. So, they are our voice. And students, peer to peer, spread the word, letting them know the facts about Corky’s Cupboard. An event like this puts it out there, and that’s what we want.”

That is what Paul Frost, ASG president, and Victoria Goetzinger, ASG vice president, want to do as well. They have decided to expand on past years’ efforts and make it even bigger. “Typically, it is always in the month of October. We’ve extended it. This year it will start September 20th, and we’ll go all the way through November 1st at noon. We’ve expanded the competition so that we can reach more of our outlets and more groups,” says Victoria.

ESU is working hard to alleviate food insecurity now, but there is also work being done to understand the causes and the scope of the need. This fall, Dr. Jasmine Linabary, assistant professor of Communication and Theatre, and Dr. Rebecca Rodriguez Carey, assistant professor of Sociology, Anthropology and Crime and Delinquency Studies, are launching Emporia At the Table: Ending Hunger in Our Community, or the EAT initiative for short.

This initiative, funded by a high-impact learning grant, will be confronting food insecurity both at Emporia State and in Emporia.

They will be inserting the theme of food insecurity into their courses so that students can have hands-on opportunities to learn the content of their courses in applied and engaged ways that make a meaningful impact in the community. They will hold stakeholder workshops and perform a campus-wide assessment to better understand the need, causes and consequences of the issue.

Their ultimate goal is to learn more about how this issue affects the campus and the Emporia community and to develop actionable solutions.

Victoria says she thinks the ‘Can The Bods’ competition is a fun way for everyone to get involved in addressing this problem, but she doesn’t want anyone to lose sight of the important need it fills. “It is definitely a project that is so important. Yes, it is fun to collect cans and have these competitions, but realizing the root of the problem and determining the purpose of trying to alleviate student hunger is of greater importance. Hunger that is impacting students’ success here at Emporia State. It is impacting their personal development, their professional development. Realizing that it hits home will hopefully make people want to engage and help. Underneath all the fun and all the hype, we hope everyone recognizes that this is a problem, and this is something that we need to be doing.”

Paul thinks that in the end, this kind of engagement shows that Hornets really are a family and care about one another. Because we have the kind of culture that cares about everyone’s success, we can address these kinds of issues and allow students to follow through and get the most out of their time at ESU. “In the grand scheme of things, I think it provides a lot of background support so that students in need can focus on their education.”

And once they have that, they may not have to worry about food insecurity anymore.

Around campus, donation boxes will be placed in every department to collect food.

HOW CURIOSITY & EXPLORATION HAS SHAPED MARAH CARNEY’S LIFE & WORK The road to success isn’t always a straight path. We’ve all met that person who knows from childhood what they want to be when they grow up, and they stay focused on that path, never deviating until they achieve it. But, they are the rarity. The rest of us try on ideas and shift our focus as we search for the work that will fulfill us through our lives. If we are lucky, we are exposed to a lot of ideas; we find mentors and influences who share possibilities with us.

We stay curious, and in doing so, find the road that was meant for us all along.

Marah Carney (BS 14-Biology, MS 17-Forensic Science) is an example of the value of staying curious. She has a mind for science and always has. It’s a quality she attributes to her grandfather.

“When he retired, he became a gardener. They had a lot of land. They had a pond in the backyard, a back pasture area, and he turned his whole yard into a garden. It was fun to go to grandma and grandpa’s house because it was this magical place with birds and squirrels and deer, and you could go fishing and hang out with grandpa in the garden. I think that’s where I developed a sense of passion for science. Starting out working in the yard with grandpa, digging in the dirt, learning plants and stuff like that.”

Working alongside her grandfather spoke to her curiosity about how things work. She was encouraged to explore everything, even the sky. When she was around five or six years old, her grandpa did something else that had a huge impact on Marah’s life. He got his pilot’s license. “I grew up in a flying family. I’ve been flying from a young age. So not only was I exposed to grandpa’s garden, but I was also exposed to flying. I’ve known for a long time that I wanted to fly.”

These experiences led her as a child to think she wanted to be a meteorologist. As her father was going through his pilot’s license training and was learning a great deal about weather, he shared that learning process with her. Everything about it intrigued her.

Over time, her ambitions shifted, and she considered joining the Air Force, then decided she wanted to be a physician, like her grandfather. She enrolled at Emporia State to study biology, with plans to go on to medical school. As an undergrad, she got involved in research with Dr. Melissa Bailey.

“We were doing blood sugar studies looking at gestational diabetes and how it affects the litter size of mice. That’s where I fell in love with the research side of academics. Not just taking the classes, but figuring out problems. I think everybody should do a little bit of research, beyond writing research papers for class. Actually doing something—talking to people or manipulating something to figure out a problem—I think everybody should be involved in that at some point in their life because it makes you think, it gets you out there.

I mean, we are all scientists. We are all trying to answer questions about the world around us. Being able to have that skill to figure out those questions is important.”

At the same time she was exploring the big questions in the lab, she was also questioning the direction of her career. She was working as a phlebotomist at Newman Regional Health while going to school and feeling less certain that medicine was the right route for her.

Some people might panic when they get to that moment of graduation and don’t know the answer to what to do next. Marah instead turned to Dr. Bailey for advice. “I talked to her, and she said, ‘Hey, come get your master’s degree. I’m putting together this Forensics program. I think you’ll like it.’”

Marah would be the first student admitted to the Forensics program at ESU. She found in that program yet another opportunity for her curiosity to lead her. “I assumed that I had two options. I assumed I was either going to be a DNA biologist or a toxicologist. Little did I know, I had more than that for an option. I met a gentleman by the name of David Wright from Johnson County’s Sheriff’s Office Criminalistics Laboratory. Dr. Bailey had done an internship with him and said she loved the firearms section. So, he came down for an open house, and I met him and said I’m interested in interning with you guys.”

That internship would set all the pieces of the puzzle into place for her. “That whole summer interning up there ended up being the biggest career shaper for me because I realized that I could do that, and I loved doing that. So far, it’s been the best choice I’ve ever made.

That’s why I am where I am today.”

“I think that’s where I developed a sense of passion for science.

By the time she finished that internship, she knew she wanted to be a firearms examiner. Upon graduating, she was hired on as a forensic firearms examiner for the Sedgwick County Regional Forensic Science Center.

The open form of the degree program enabled Marah to find the best fit for her. It allowed her to try out and explore different career options. She recalls, “You were not required to pick a route. There were classes offered in lots of different fields. We had people coming in from outside of the university, like David Wright, he came down and taught a firearms class. We had Ryan Rezzelle, he taught a crime scene investigations class. We’ve got experts from the field coming in and teaching these classes, so you’ve got a plethora of options to choose from. I think that also helped me decide what I wanted to do.”

All those options also gave her the chance to pick up useful knowledge and skills from other disciplines. “I took an entomology class. I wasn’t a wildlife biologist in my undergrad, but I decided to take a forensic entomology course with Dr. Schrock, and it was an awesome class. That taught me the skill of drawing. I’m not an artist by any means, but in that class, he encouraged you to look at the insects and become familiar with their characteristics so that if you needed to you could identify them. He also encouraged you to sketch them out so that you could pay attention to those details.

Now, I use sketches on a daily basis with some of my cases because it slows you down and makes you think of the details of the item that you are looking at.”

All of these experiences honed her skills, kept her curious and allowed her to experience the work firsthand. It also gave her the chance to understand herself better. She sees that she likes to solve problems, find answers, help others and share her experiences. It is true both in her work and in her hobbies. A pilot in her own right, she loves to take people up and share what she loves about flying.

“It’s fascinating to be amongst the clouds. If you are out on a day where you’ve got a bunch of fluffy clouds in the sky, you can just sit there and dance around those clouds. It’s just a magical experience, something that you just never forget. And, it’s sharing that experience with others that I absolutely love. It’s contagious.”

Marah is now entering her third year as a firearms examiner and has just wrapped up her two-year training program. She is now certified to conduct function testing, serial restoration and comparisons, and has recently taken a position with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office Criminalistics Laboratory where she will be working with David Wright once again. She is excited to have graduated to this technical level of expertise and is ready to give back to the community through her work. “I’m at the point in my career where I just want to work. I want to work and get more experience.

Experience is key in what I do. I enjoy going to conferences and learning and networking with people, but I’m really here to work.

I’ve always had this sense of community service and that’s exactly what I want to do. I want to get these cases out and pursue justice.”

FIXING GAPS IN AVAILABLE SERVICES FOR KANSAS AND THE REGION

$2 MILLION IN GRANTS FOR REHABILITATION COUNSELING WILL INCREASE PROFESSIONAL SERVICES FOR PEOPLE WITH HEARING IMPAIRMENTS AND AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS Emporia State has received two grants totaling more than $2 million to help professionals pursue goals to increase employment opportunities for people with deaf and hard of hearing issues, and autism spectrum disorders. Emporia State has one of just three programs in the United States that offer a concentration in working with deaf and hard of hearing people.

Through the grants, Emporia State’s counselor education department will support students with tuition, training and professional development. The grant begins immediately and will run through Sept. 30, 2024. Vocational rehabilitation personnel applying to the program will receive online instruction leading to a master’s degree or professional certification.

The grant aims to address shortages in professional services for people needing these rehabilitation services in the region. The grant awarded for the deaf and hard of hearing consumers totals $816,477, with $658,213 (81%) provided by federal funding through the U.S. Department of Education, and the remaining $158,264 (19%), provided by ESU. The autism spectrum disorders funding was for $1,250,256, with $1,059,006 (85%) coming from federal resources through the U.S. Department of Education, and $191,250 (15%) provided by ESU. “While there are several universities providing master’s level training in rehabilitation counseling in the identified four-state area, none of these universities offer a concentration in working with deaf and hard of hearing people,” said Dr. Damara Goff Paris, associate professor and project director of rehabilitation services’ grants.

“Our program has an excellent reputation for training rehabilitation counselors for over 50 years, and our reputation as a rigorous online program has been growing over the past few years,” said Paris. “As one of the few graduate rehabilitation counseling training programs in the Midwest and the only one in Kansas and Nebraska, we are well-positioned to increase the quality of future rehabilitation counselors for the Midwest.

“In addition, our rehabilitation counseling autism spectrum disorders program has collaboration from both Emporia State’s special education program — where an autism spectrum disorders certificate is available — and department of counselor education, as well as national collaboration from experts in the field to provide new and improved course structure and resources for future rehabilitation counseling personnel.”

As one of the few universities in the nation offering a fully online master’s degree format in rehabilitation counseling, the program aims to reach rural areas where it is difficult to access rehabilitation education and training. The graduate rehabilitation counseling concentration in Autism Spectrum Disorders, as well as a 12-credit certificate, are available to a national audience.

“As a member of the deaf community, I am heartened to see such interest in deaf culture and American Sign Language by our students and our university, and excited to see that we can continue to build resources that allow our learners and community members to increase their knowledge and awareness of this population,” stated Paris.

Through a previous five-year grant from 2014 to 2019, rehabilitation counseling was able to exceed its original goal of graduating 20 scholars, graduating 23 scholars by summer 2019. Of those people, 90 percent are employed by state vocational rehabilitation services or other qualifying agencies.

Emporia State University’s counselor education department has a strong identity in the region, educating over 552 rehabilitation counselors over a span of more than 50 years. The department’s curriculum is specifically designed to provide both survey and experiential or high impact learning content as related to disability, deaf and hard of hearing issues, and rehabilitation services.

He found many links between this issue and brain drain. “The Midwest as a whole has this problem, but you look at Lincoln and Omaha, not the same problem. Lawrence, Kansas, not the same problem. Kansas City, not the same problem. Wichita has been statistically changing over the last decade because of their investment in their art and entertainment infrastructure.”

He was starting to see that his concept could provide a significant benefit. “I worked with the Economics department at ESU to measure the potential economic impact of a proposed festival in this community, and it was basically for every dollar spent eight comes back. Those were powerful numbers.”

Meanwhile, Megan was finishing up her Art Therapy degree and learning about an emerging field of practice called Creative Placemaking. This is an approach to community development that utilizes space-based strategies to develop and leverage arts and culture as a means to promote community transformation, serve an economic agenda that promotes the area, while also creating a unique quality and character in that space. The Crossroads Art District in Kansas City is a prime example of Creative Placemaking.

BUILDING COMMUNITY THROUGH CREATIVE PLACEMAKING AND ACCESS TO THE ARTS Brain drain. It’s the name given to the phenomenon of young, often well-educated people leaving their small hometowns, taking their talents and their vitality to larger cities and leaving a gap in the economies, and often the souls, of the places they’ve left behind. It is a problem that has plagued rural communities across the United States for decades.

This studio and all the work for the community that springs from it is their brainchild. And, it comes from connecting the unique tapestry of skills, passions and goals that the couple have and share.

Hank O, that’s what he commonly goes by because most people struggle with his last name, explains to me the journey that led them to create this arts-based 501(c)3.

How does a town reverse the trend and build its population instead of watching it bleed away? Without a doubt, good paying jobs are essential to keep young people from leaving their community, or to entice them to return. But there may be more to solving the riddle than just jobs.

The couple had moved to Emporia to pursue their respective degrees at Emporia State. Megan was working on a degree in Art Therapy.

Hank was working on a bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies. That degree requires a capstone project, which incorporates all of your cognate fields into a single idea. It’s not multidisciplinary, it’s interdisciplinary. For Hank, those cognates were marketing, biology, psychology, sociology and his music training.

He contemplated what project would pull these elements together and landed on the idea of a music festival in Emporia.

How resilient can a community be if the dollars earned there go elsewhere for entertainment and other discretionary expenses? Does a community need to be more than the place you work? Does it need to be the place you want to spend your time?

This is one of the things Hank Osterhout (BIS 14-Interdisciplinary Studies, MBA 19-Business Administration) and his wife Megan O’Brien (MS 14-Art Therapy, Mental Health Counseling) bring up when we sit down to talk about the organization they have created in Emporia, Kansas—Kansas Free for Arts. Their three children enthusiastically greet me when I enter the studio. The kids are gathered around one of the art tables, enjoying a snack, working on art projects. All of the priorities and passions of Hank and Megan’s life are on display here. Their children, art, music and community.

He began to research this idea. “I ended up doing three semesters, four credit hours each, of research, about 150 pages each semester.

I think I ended up with about 600 pages of research. That first semester I did a cost analysis of how to run a festival and resource analysis of the Emporia community. The second semester I did a market analysis of Emporia. It was one of the stars-aligning moments of this project, because the semester before a master’s of business student had done research on how students of Emporia were spending their extra income and they found 85% of the extra income was going to Kansas City, Wichita and Lawrence to go see concerts and do the nightlife thing and to buy clothes. Resources that weren’t really accessible here in the community.”

As Hank and Megan discussed these two kinds of projects, they seemed to fit together hand in glove and Kansas Free for Arts was born. They set about figuring out how to create a non-profit and what it would look like. They structured it to work in three ways.

One is as a studio space for art and music, which serves as a creative space targeted to children and young adults but open to anyone.

It provides a safe space for exploring the arts, but also builds a sense of community. The studio curriculum is designed and run with the help of art therapy interns from ESU, which serves to create more local opportunities for students to complete this element of their education and gain valuable experience without having to leave Emporia.

The second element is outreach and collaboration. Free concerts are offered in partnership with other organizations in town, like the Emporia Farmer’s Market, Lyon County Historical Society, the Coppertop and in conjunction with Hispanics of Today and Tomorrow (HOTT) events. The art studio is also portable with popups at events like Dirty Kanza, as well as with groups like the United Way in their Summer Climbing program.

The third element, launched this year, is the Halfway to Everywhere Festival. Held on August 31st in downtown Emporia, the all-ages music festival featured nearly 30 bands playing on four stages, with the mainstage in the lot between 7th and 8th on Merchant, a second stage on 7th Street near Commercial, and the third and fourth at Bourbon Cowboy and Radius Brewing Company. In addition to the music, there were author sessions highlighting award-winning local and regional authors held at Ellen Plumb’s Bookstore and bike cruise tours put on by Eclectic Bikes.

The festival has been a huge goal for Hank and also a manifestation of his vision to create something that appeals to young people. In keeping with that goal, it was free for general admission, although VIP paid ticket packages were also offered.

The hard work Hank and Megan have done to bring this all into existence stems from a love of the town they have made their home. Hank envisions it as one part of the work taking place to advance Emporia as a community. “Over time, we hope it influences people to have a different perspective, not just on Emporia, but on Kansas, and influence younger people to stick around and become entrepreneurs.”

But, it is also personal for him. He hopes that he is taking part in building a musical, cultural and artistic epicenter where his children will want to stay. “My son just got out of kindergarten. I would like for him to have a different experience as an Emporian, one that is more accessible to the arts, than say someone who graduated high school yesterday.”

EMPORIA STATE UNIVERSITY BRINGS VIRTUAL REALITY TO THE CLASSROOM NEW TECHNOLOGIES TAKE EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING TO A NEW LEVEL Emporia State University, recognizing the upsurge in virtual technologies, has transformed the way students learn and interact across campus. From virtual crime scenes to being inside the Apollo 11 mission, ESU is implementing a variety of ways to use VR and mixed realities across campus.

Beginning nearly two years ago, ESU started working with immersive technology in hopes of giving students hands-on learning experiences. The first project focused on building a virtual crime scene at the Kansas Bureau of Investigation headquarters in Topeka.

Around the same time as that project was completed, ESU also began creating a virtual experience for Dr. Joyce Thierer (MLS 80-Library Science, MS 86-History), professor of History, in which she reenacted a pioneer woman at her ranch outside of Emporia.

The reenactment was filmed with technologies that allow viewers to experience the performance in an immersive environment, bringing her history lessons to life.

“We believe this technology affords students opportunities for participating in a variety of course activities they otherwise would never be able to access,” said Rob Gibson, director of Learning Technologies.

ESU did not stop at crime scenes and history lessons. Over the past two years, professors have been working with Information Technology (IT) to develop innovative and immersive courses across a broad spectrum of subjects, giving students across campus the opportunity to experience learning in a new way.

Dr. Thomas Mahoney and Adelaide Akers, both assistant professors of Mathematics and Economics, incorporated the technology with the outreach program Master It. The program brought students into Apollo 11 in a VR experience, walking on the moon, docking the lunar module, and watching the launch from the inside of the rocket. Even physical education has been impacted as Dr. Mike Butler, professor of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, is using VR to teach the Art of Juggling.

"Anything that you're going to train someone to do, if you do it in a simulation, it might be safer, it might help them learn, it might be more cost-effective and so on and so forth," Butler said. "So, people are exploring a lot of different applications of virtual reality.”

Dr. Joyce Zhou, associate professor of Marketing, has also implemented VR projects where students are the creators. Working with area businesses, marketing students created 25 virtual reality applications, using VR cameras and software, allowing customers to have a virtual shopping experience. Additionally, Shari Scribner, assistant archivist for the Library Archives & Special Collections, is working with graduate students to create VR applications for the May Massee Museum and William Allen White Library, giving them the opportunity to be VR content creators.

With the success of many VR activities across the campus, virtual technologies are continuing to grow at ESU. For example, Selayoa Lovett, instructional designer in IT, and Hind Aati (MLS 18-Library Science), learning designer in IT, have developed and run VR for a non-majors’ biology course that is offered online. The students access virtual lab simulations using headsets. Through the technology they are able to access labs and equipment that would cost millions of dollars if it was on-ground. Students can actually complete assignments and assessments from inside the headset that are recorded in the learning management system. Emporia State hopes to expand the virtual labs to include virtual chemistry and other sciences.

More applications of the technology are forthcoming. Carol Lucy, assistant professor of Business Administration, is in the process of creating a program utilizing VR to test target market response for students in her entrepreneurship class.

“We want to continue to expand our virtual offerings, immersing students in their education and enriching their experience at ESU,” said Allison Garret, university president. “To provide the best possible learning opportunities, we have to be at the top of our game in technology, and I think we are off to a great start."

‘E’ is for ‘Eck’ Many consider Eckenrode and his class to be the beginning of a new era of Emporia State Football. In 2009, the Hornet freshman out of The Woodlands High School in Houston, Texas, saw his new college team go 2-9.

“We were bad,” Eckenrode said. “It took a lot of hard work.”

“We were definitely in a struggle phase,” Head Coach Garin Higgins (BS 92-Psychology) said. “Trying to build the program and turn it around.”

The Hornets did just that. By Eckenrode’s senior season in 2012, the Hornets went 10-2 capped off by a victory over Texas A&MKingsville in the Kanza Bowl.

“The seniors were really proud of that,” Eckenrode said. “It was a testament to our leadership.”

Eckenrode’s time at Emporia State ended with him as the career record holder for touchdown passes, passing yards, total offense, completions and attempts. He finished as the single-season record holder for total offense and passing yards. Eckenrode was announced as a candidate for the Harlon Hill Trophy, given to the nation’s best Division II football player. ‘E’ is for ‘Eck’ became a commonly-used motto within the football program, the university and in the community.

“I didn’t know how good he could become; I just knew he had potential,” Higgins said. “To me, he became a guy that learned the offense so well, that was something that helped him be very successful and break the records at that time.”

When his successful career was over, many wondered who could possibly replace him.

New Sheriff in Town Ponca City, Oklahoma, native Brent Wilson was a true freshman in 2012 during Eckenrode’s senior season. He appeared sparingly as the backup quarterback that year.

“I had to pass the torch,” Eckenrode said. “For me, that was Brent.”

Coach Higgins smiles as he vividly relives the moment Wilson was first put into the game.

“I always knew he was going to be good,” Higgins said. “Now, his debut?”

One might expect the typical American football movie story.

A true freshman comes into the game for the first time, completing several touchdown passes and is hoisted onto the shoulders of his teammates.

Not quite.

Hometown Hero “We were undefeated at the time,” Higgins said. “Tyler gets hurt in the first half against Southwest Baptist. Brent has to go in. His statistics were, no completions, four attempts, two interceptions. He completed more passes to the other team than to us.”

Emporia, Kansas, native Braxton Marstall graduated from Emporia High School in 2014, joining the Hornet football team that fall.

Marstall only played in two games his senior year after a seasonending collarbone break.

Eckenrode came back in the second half with a groin injury to win the game.

Marstall had previously attended Hornet football camp in the summer, catching the eye of Higgins and his staff.

“Tyler always emphasized to be a good player, you have to have confidence in yourself, your teammates, and your coaches,” Wilson said. “Tyler was one of the greats. Confidence is one of the things I learned most from him.”

“His performance in that summer camp was as impressive as Brent,” Higgins said. “He ran an option offense in high school, so he might have thrown the ball six times a game. That was good for us because I didn’t think I would have to compete against anybody to recruit him. I knew in the back of my mind that he could make the throws.”

Wilson took that confidence and ran with it, despite some skepticism from those outside the program.

“Tyler graduated, and after seeing that performance (at Southwest Baptist) by Brent, people would ask me, ’Who’s going to be the starter now?’” Higgins said. “I would say, ‘I think I’ve got the guy, Brent Wilson.’”

“Coach Higgins could have thrown in the towel with me,” Wilson said. “But, he believed in me.”

Wilson became the next all-time great quarterback at Emporia State, doing so while overcoming several obstacles.

His sophomore season in 2013, Wilson led the Hornets to their first playoff appearance in 10 years while setting the single-season touchdown passes record. He wouldn’t get the chance to play in the postseason; however, suffering a broken collarbone in the regularseason finale.

Wilson, back for his junior season in 2014, experienced crushing deja vu when just four games into the season, he broke his collarbone again in the fourth quarter against Northeastern State.

He completed the game with the injury, throwing a game-tying touchdown in the first overtime and scoring the game-winner on a rush in the second extra period.

Hornet football finished the season 4-7 without their starter.

While Wilson contemplated even coming back to the football field for his senior year, the decision to return proved to be historic.

The Hornets went 11-3 in 2015, tying the school record for wins in a season, and reaching the national quarterfinals. Wilson finished his career with 9,516 yards of total offense and 8,621 passing yards, both school records. He also set the single-season records for passing yards at 4,244, touchdown passes with 30 and total offense with 4,560.

He was named the MIAA Offensive Player of the Year and one of eight finalists for the Harlon Hill Trophy.

“It was just such a blessing to be able to come back for my senior season and to finish it healthy,” Wilson said. “I couldn’t have asked for a better place to play.”

Since 2009: Two quarterbacks. Two record-breaking careers.

Now, the hunt was on for the next one.

Coach Higgins didn’t have to look far.

Marstall’s true freshman year in 2014 was the same year that saw Wilson injure his collarbone for the second time. After two games, the Hornets’ other backup quarterback also went down with an injury just before the half against Fort Hays State.

“So, guess who gets thrown in?” Higgins asks with a smile. “Braxton, the guy holding the signal board.”

Marstall’s debut was an impressive outing, nearly leading his team to a comeback victory.

“I remember thinking ‘Man, he could be pretty special,” Higgins said.

Marstall used his redshirt year the following year when Wilson was back for his senior season.

“Brent taught me a lot,” Marstall said. “He would never say much but just watching the way he went about things and carried himself, he was what a quarterback should be.”

2016 began the true Marstall era.

That year, the Hornets went 11-2, hosted the school’s first-ever home playoff game, and broke the school record for most consecutive wins in a season.

This past season, with Marstall as a senior the Hornets finished with an 8-4 record after a win over Arkansas-Monticello in the Corsicana Bowl.

When it was all said and done, Marstall made his way to the top of the ESU career leaderboard in passing yardage (9,918), yards of total offense (11,156) and touchdown passes (87).

He was the MIAA Offensive Player of the Year as well as a Harlon Hill finalist.

“A lot of it has to do with Coach Higgins and his coaching,” Marstall said. “People buying into what he’s doing. When you’re in high school, you don’t want to go to a team that’s 2-9, but Tyler and his class did. They bought in. Then, Brent and those guys carried it on and did so well. The guys I played with, I think, we did a pretty decent job of keeping the program on an incline.”

There is no doubt that all three players have impacted the Emporia State football program. All now finished, a new quarterback will take the field this fall. If his story parallels anything like his predecessors, the record books could be rewritten.

Family for Life

But, just how much did Emporia State influence these players?

All three quarterbacks broke records. All three helped shape the future of Emporia State Football for years to come.

Having been graduated for at least a few more years than Marstall, Eckenrode and Wilson are both now settled in with their professional careers. Both work for Koch Industries, just in different cities. Eckenrode resides in Minneapolis, Minnesota, while Wilson lives in Wichita, Kansas.

They each see the strong correlation between their football careers and life past graduation.

“I think it comes down to hard work and discipline,” Wilson said.

“What the entire university emphasized is that you reap what you sow. Emporia State gave me multiple opportunities and a great student-athlete experience.”

“It might sound cliche, but football teaches you about hard work, adversity, being a part of a team—all things that are useful in the professional world,” Eckenrode said. “It teaches you how to be a good teammate, innovative, about time management, it’s all just second nature. What Coach Higgins and ESU taught me really gave me a leg up in what I’m doing now.”

“Football, in general, teaches you how to overcome and when adversity hits, how to handle it,” Marstall said. “I feel like there was a lot of times when things weren’t going our way, but we persevered.

That’s something you can take with you the rest of your life.”

The Next Wave Just like before Wilson and Marstall began their careers, there is no certainty who will take the role of Emporia State quarterback for the fall of 2019.

Hornet football’s roster lists several prospective players. Pat Briningstool, junior from Clinton Township, Michigan, is one option. Dalton Cowan, redshirt sophomore from Topeka, Kansas, is another. Braden Gleason from Muldrow, Oklahoma, is in his redshirt freshman season.

Cowan, whose parents, Jeff (BSB 91-Finance) and Cassie (BSE 95-Psychology) Cowan, are both Emporia State Alumni, understands the meaning of the past quarterbacks’ legacy and the challenge that lies ahead.

“It means a lot, knowing the past success of all the quarterbacks,” Cowan said. “It’s a lot of pressure, but we can’t really focus on that.

We have a lot of new guys so we just need to make sure we’re all in sync, all on the same page.”

If you ask Tyler, Brent and Braxton though, it’s about more than that.

“When you’re 18, you’ve been around your immediate family your whole life,” Eckenrode said. “I’ll never forget the day I stepped foot on campus, I gained a new family.”

“Records are meant to be broken, and it’s cool to do that,” Wilson said. “I know if you ask Tyler and Braxton too, it’s meaningless if our team isn’t successful.”

“There are so many reasons why this team is a family,” Marstall said.

“My teammates have truly become a part of my own family.”

Coach Higgins recruited Eckenrode, Wilson and Marstall. Emporia State gave them an opportunity.

Yet, these three guys impacted one person more than statistics will ever show.

“I am very fortunate to have had the opportunity to coach three special young men,” Higgins said. “Each one of them had an impact on me personally in one way or another. Regardless of all of their success on the field, I am much more proud of the men they have become off the field. What is special about coaching is the relationship you build with your players and with these guys, that relationship will last a lifetime with me.”

2019 Service Citation Recipients Marilyn Buchele

Marilyn Buchele ended a 41-year career at Emporia State when she retired in 2014; however, her presence will be felt on-campus for years to come. During her career, Marilyn served as a layout assistant in the Print Shop, secretary to the Dean of Men and Dean of Women, the director of Veterans Educational Services, and executive assistant to four vice presidents for Student Affairs and the Dean of Students. She is a charter member of the Kellogg Society, a Summer Theatre Angel, served as manager of Corky the Hornet, assisted with commencement ceremonies, and chaired the campus United Way campaign. She and her husband Ken established the Buchele Scholarship in Honor of Veterans, the Ken & Marilyn Buchele Theatre Scholarship, the Buchele Fund for International Travel Assistance for Honors Students, and the Ken & Marilyn Buchele Athletic Department Endowed Fund.

Frank Duvanel

If Frank Duvanel (BSE 1960) of Benton, Kansas, looks like he's having fun working on behalf of Emporia State University, that's probably because he is. During the 59 years since the retired farmer graduated, he has ardently and actively supported our university. He has been involved for decades in the South Central Core Planning Group, has been president of the South Central Alumni Chapter. Duvanel, a past member of the ESU Alumni Board, has delivered Students Through Alumni Recruitment Team (START) gifts to all Butler County high schools and was as a TAP (Teacher Appreciation Program) volunteer for many years. He has fielded a team for the Don Edwards Golf Classic each of its 22 years of existence and maintains close ties with Sigma Tau fraternity. The Duvanels attend Homecoming each year.

Dr. Charles R. "Charlie" Hill

Dr. Charles R. "Charlie" Hill (BSE 1950; MA 1956) has stayed connected to Emporia State, even though he left officially in 1980 after 25 years on the faculty as professor and director of theatre. He retired in 1998 as head of speech and drama at Austin Community College.

Hill helped launch the first Summer Theatre season in Emporia in 1955 and directed numerous Summer Theatre productions (44), Curli Q Homecoming Variety shows (14), and musicals (6) during his time at Emporia State. Hill's work founding the Emporia Theatre Guild was one of Hill's most-significant contributions to the university. Hill continues to serve on the Theatre Guild Board, along with co-founders Mary Sue Wade and Polly Sauder. In 2005, Hill’s former students established the Dr. Charlie R. Hill Scholarship Fund in his honor, which was first awarded on "Charlie Hill Theatre Day." Hill also established the Charles R. Hill Theatre Scholarship.

Steve R. Williams

Steve Williams’ (BSE 1964; MS 1969) involvement with Emporia State runs deep. As a Foundation Trustee board member, he has served as vice chair and chair, and on the Personnel Operations Review Committee. He is currently serving as past chair on the Executive and Finance Committees. He led the Trustees' fundraising efforts to build the new Breidenthal University House, which will provide private living space for the president and family, as well as a separate public space for entertaining. Williams also led a years-long effort to reorganize and redesign the Foundation itself, to better serve the university. He was a member of the Alumni Board of Directors, is a member of the South Central Alumni Chapter, and assists in running the annual Don Edwards Golf Classic. He and his wife established the Stephen R. and Cheryl S. Williams Scholarship at ESU to assist students studying to become teachers.

TRAUMAINFORMED EDUCATION

THE CHALLENGES FACING EDUCATION TODAY AND THE APPROACH THAT COULD CHANGE EVERYTHING

“Flipping a desk. Flipping a room.” The words fly out of Jenna Pennington’s mouth without additional explanation, as though they are common phrases, a part of the nomenclature. For teachers and education students about to begin their working lives in the classroom, increasingly they are. So is eloping from class. This is a term used to describe a student leaving without permission and usually in a state of agitation. These are just a couple of the behaviors confronting educators in the classroom. They are on the rise. They are rendering many of the traditional methods of discipline ineffective. And for students like Jenna who are nearing graduation, preparing for classrooms of their own, it can be intimidating.

It was these experiences and what she was learning about classroom management strategies that spurred her in the fall of 2018 to found a new student organization at Emporia State, the Trauma-Informed Educators Student Organization or TIE. The effects of trauma

To understand trauma-informed education, you must first go back in time. In the late 1990s, Kaiser Permanente and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention launched a study on obesity.

Seventeen thousand participants were recruited to study the factors that contribute to obesity. What the data would uncover was that their question was the tip of an iceberg.

The study found a high incidence of adverse childhood experiences, or ACES, were a common thread among respondents. The study identified a wide range of traumatic experiences in childhood that had negative consequences on children, and the adults they would grow up to be. They distilled the list to the 10 most common: physical, emotional or sexual abuse, physical or emotional neglect, mental illness or substance abuse in the family or household, an incarcerated relative, witnessing violence against the mother and experiencing divorce. These 10 experiences would become the ACES checklist.

What they uncovered from there, was that the more ACES a person has, the stronger the link between health problems throughout life, including heart disease, cancer, chronic lung disease, stroke, diabetes and shortened lifespans. It also had strong links to mental health and social problems throughout life, including a 30-fold increase in attempted suicide.

ACES are common. Sixty-seven percent of the study participants had at least one ACE, 20% reported three and 13% had four or more.

These adverse childhood experiences have a slew of effects that can disrupt a person’s life and lifespan, but researchers also wanted to look at what it meant to childhood, the time when the experiences were occurring. Subsequent studies would find ACES profoundly increased the risk of learning difficulties, emotional problems and development issues in childhood.

What does it mean in the classroom?

While researchers have been making breakthroughs in understanding the effects of traumatic experiences, educators have been witnessing it firsthand and trying to provide a stable and productive learning environment in spite of it. However, in many schools, the number of children who are struggling with ACES seems to be growing, and surveys suggest that behavioral issues and disruptions in the classroom are on the rise.

Jessica Griffin (BSE 00-Elementary Education, MS 06-Education Administration), principal of Logan Avenue Elementary School in Emporia, has seen the rising prevalence of the problem firsthand.

“We know at three ACES, attendance is going to be an issue and when you get to four or higher behavior is going to be an issue. In our school family, the average ACE score is three or higher. We know that means we are going to have behaviors. There’s no longer one or two or three kids in a building; there’s that many in every classroom. So, take that times 13 classrooms. You’re talking about a whole lot of kids who are carrying around a lot of baggage.”

That baggage affects learning. And, traditional discipline practices frequently don’t resolve the behaviors. Jessica Griffin saw it in her school, and it was taking a toll on her. “It is hard to say, but about four years ago I was ready to resign because of the increase in intensity and the frequency of the behaviors we were having in the school setting, and I felt that I wasn’t able to help my teachers.

Everything that I was trained to do—classroom management, special education, behavioral management, functional behavior assessments—all of those traditional approaches were no longer working for us.”

Subsequent studies would find ACES profoundly increased the risk of learning difficulties, emotional problems and development issues in childhood.

Her lowest moment came a few weeks before the end of the school year when a student had a particularly violent outburst. “All year he had destroyed teachers’ property, he had run from the room, he had refused to do things, and I used traditional discipline. We did time out, we did in-school suspension, I out-of-school suspended this little person, and it did not change the behavior. In fact, it made it worse. The parent was very frustrated. She was single. She would come in crying. And, I felt at a loss because not only could I not help my teacher, I couldn’t help the parent, and I obviously wasn’t helping the child. And, there was a day in May when he again had eloped from the classroom and was in the front of the building. We had locked down the front of the building, and he flipped a very heavy table over, proceeded to take the counselor’s walkie-talkie and threw it with such force that it shattered, and then when there wasn’t anything left to grab, the last thing left was the wooden doorstop for our office door. He picked it up, and you wouldn’t think a first-grader could do a lot of damage, but he picked up that wooden doorstop, and he threw it so hard at me that it went right by my head, into the boy’s bathroom, bounced off the wall and came back out about six feet.”

Jessica hung through the end of the school year and decided she wasn’t ready to quit. But, she did need something to change. She spent the following summer researching and looking for solutions.

That was when she learned about the issues of trauma and its effects on social-emotional development and learning. And, she learned about different approaches to address it.

From a study in The Lancet, “Physiological and biomolecular studies are increasingly establishing how childhood exposure to chronic stress leads to changes in development of nervous, endocrine, and immune systems, resulting in impaired cognitive, social, and emotional functioning and increased allostatic load (i.e., chronic physiological damage).”

Trauma-Informed Education— What is it?

Trauma-informed approaches to education focus on guiding students to recognize their emotional states and regulate their emotional responses. By learning how their own brains function and what is happening when they are in a dysregulated state, whether that means they have dipped into a highly emotional state or gone further down and are in a fight or flight response, students can develop internal mechanisms and learn how to bring themselves back under control and into executive function.

This approach is heavily reliant on knowing the students well, being adaptive to the variety of ways they respond and showing that you care, even when they are at their lowest points. It isn’t easy to achieve because there isn’t one single answer or approach that applies to all students, but when done well, it has shown itself to be very effective.

“We spend a lot of time teaching kids to name the feeling. Naming it gives you a lot of power. And, then how do you respond? What do you need to do to get back to your executive state? To get back to calm? We spend a ton of time teaching about the brain. My little babies can talk to you about their amygdala, their limbic system, their pre-frontal cortex—where executive function happens. They know they want to be in that executive state so they can be a good problem solver, so they can be helpful to the school family because they know when they slide down into their emotional state and they slide further down into their survival state that they can’t think there. They can’t learn there. They can’t make good decisions there,” says Jessica Griffin.

Emporia State education students are forging ahead

At Emporia State, future educators are learning what trauma is and how to incorporate the trauma-informed teaching model in their classrooms. Melissa Gerleman (BSE 00-Elementary Education), Emporia State instructor of Elementary Education, Early Childhood and Special Education, believes they are getting the tools they need to enter their classrooms prepared. “I think the students entering Block realize that relationships and social-emotional skills are needed for all of their future students, therefore they are better informed going into classrooms. We’ve had some conversations with our students as they come back from Block I and Block II, and they see first-hand the importance of educating the "whole" child. Our students are able to create positive behavioral contracts and make connections with the students they are working with.

This speaks volumes because when Jennie and I were getting our degrees in the field of Education, there was not a need for traumainformed practices. It is a different world within today's classrooms and here at ESU the education department is making sure that our students are prepared to focus on what each child truly needs. This is what brought about the development of EL 343 Trauma-Informed Practices in the Classroom.”

With the Trauma-Informed Educators Student Organization (TIE) that Jenna Pennington and fellow students created last year, understanding of the issues around trauma and its solutions are spreading across campus. When the organization held its first meeting in January 2019, it had a far greater turnout than expected.

“Right off the bat, I was like oh my goodness, I didn’t realize how big this was going to be. I think we had 40 or 50 at our first meeting,” says Jenna Pennington, the 2018-2019 president of the organization.

They weren’t only education majors. Students from other disciplines like psychology and counseling joined as well. There was even a business major that attended.

Dr. Jennie Long (MS 01-Early Childhood Education) thinks this organization is helping to shape these future educators into the highly capable teachers that today’s problems require. “We’ve got some really great leaders. The thing I love about the members of Trauma-Informed Educators is that these are our future teachers, and you can see the passion and the drive in them. I don’t think they care if a child has a trauma history or doesn’t have a trauma history, they want all children to succeed, and they realize that all these social-emotional learning strategies, and treating people with dignity and respect, is going to truly impact their classrooms.”

The student organization is unique. As near as they can tell, there isn’t another university with a student organization focused on trauma-informed practices anywhere in the United States. They are also highly ambitious and working hard to increase awareness about trauma and provide solutions to their fellow educators. They are already organizing a conference for November 9th at ESU. “We are inviting pre-service teachers from here and the other universities in Kansas, current teachers from across Kansas, principals and superintendents who want to get their foot in the door about trauma.

It is a break out session/lecture type conference. We have James Moffett coming to speak, he was a trauma-informed principal, and now he is doing educational consulting. Jessica Griffin, the principal of Logan Avenue School, will be speaking. Jennifer Martin (BS 96-Sociology), she is the Site Coordinator at Logan Avenue. And we are having a teacher panel that are trauma-informed teachers that will be here to answer questions,” explains Dylan Schneider, Vice President of Trauma-Informed Educators (TIE).

Dr. Long finds their initiative and drive dazzling. “They are running with it. These students want to be game changers. They are going to be leaders in education.”

It’s never too late

It is easy to learn about this subject and become overwhelmed and disheartened by the scope of the problem. The data suggests that a significant number of children are struggling with enormous challenges, and suffering because of them. However, the research also shows that there is every reason to hope and to act.

The brain is amazingly resilient. Especially when it is still growing.

It is what gave Jessica Griffin the hope to go on during her summer of researching trauma-informed practices. She learned, “The brain is not fixed, and it is very malleable. It will continue to mold and heal and grow with connection with other people.”

“We know from studies that one person, one supportive person in a child’s life, can change the outcome of their life. Just one.”

Connection is the key. Jennifer Martin, Site Coordinator at Logan Avenue, thinks that is the essential take away for anyone engaged in this work. “We know from studies that one person, one supportive person in a child’s life, can change the outcome of their life. Just one.”

It is a message that the students in TIE use as their rallying cry.

Jenna Pennington believes it is essential that she and her fellow teachers strive to be that person for every student they teach. “There are so many things that can rock a child’s world. There are going to be hard times; it’s just a season of life. To me, no one should go through it alone, and I don’t know why as a society we thought that was ok, but we’re changing it.”

RESTORING OUR PAST

Abigail Morse Hall, first opened in 1924, is undergoing a complete renovation.

Northeast Morse Hall and part of Central Morse Hall have been torn down, and Abigail will once again be a freestanding residential hall. This project will transform the landscape west of Wooster Lake, providing a welcoming space for Hornets past, present and future to gather. As part of the university housing master plan, Emporia State will both preserve our campus history and deliver a modern living and learning experience for students. Renovation will be complete, and students will reside in Abigail Morse Hall once again, in August of 2020.

BUILDING OUR FUTURE

In August of 2019, doors opened for students at the new Schallenkamp Residence Hall, named for ESU’s 14th president, Dr. Kay Schallenkamp. This residence hall serves first-year and upper-class students. With flexible, collaborative spaces for all majors and classroom and studio spaces designed for art and music majors, this hall located on Market Street at the southeast entrance of campus provides a place for students to blend their studies and lives seamlessly.
