VALUE OF RECRUITING AT EMPORIA STATE UNIVERSITY

Career Outcomes

Did you know that 94% of our graduates have landed their next step within six months following graduation? Whether graduates attend graduate or professional school or start their first professional job, Emporia State graduates are well-prepared and find success landing their next step after graduation. Emporia State prepares students for success by promoting positive career development early in a student’s college career, connecting students to high quality internships, and helping students build the skills employers want. In fact, over 70% of our graduates report completing at least one internship during college, preparing them to be successful full-time employees. In addition, Emporia State University embeds the NACE Career Competencies into many programs across campus, including student employment, first year programs, and professional development courses. Here are some notable facts about our distinctive academic programs.

Fast facts about ESU academic programs

• ESU has been named a college of distinction for three consecutive years due to our high quality education, high-impact learning experiences and vibrant campus life. • Offering 200+ academic programs from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences,

School of Business, School of Library and Information Management, and the Teachers College, Emporia State prepares students for success in a wide variety of career fields and industries. • ESU offers 30+ distinctive graduate programs, some on an accelerated course format. • Teacher candidates are in the classroom early in their career and have opportunities to student teach in Finland, Paraguay and Indonesia. • ESU is the only university with a “teacher guarantee.” What’s a teacher guarantee? If an ESU graduate needs additional training in their first year of teaching in order to meet district expectations, ESU will provide remediation, mentoring and additional instruction at no cost to the district or the graduate. • The School of Business is prestigiously accredited by Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International, a distinction only 5% of business schools hold. Hornets brought home 12 of the 24 Top 10 finishes in the state of Kansas at the 2019 National Phi Beta Lambda Conference (collegiate FBLA). • ESU nursing students have a 93% threeyear average first time NCLEX pass rate, well above state and national benchmarks. • ESU students earned more awards at the Kansas Academy of Science over the past 10 years than any other university in Kansas.

RECRUITING

POLICIES To be a recruiting partner with Career Services, employers must follow the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) Principles for Professional Practice, the Department of Labor laws and regulations and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) recruitment and employment guidelines and laws established by the federal and Kansas governments. Adherence to these policies ensures that Career Services provides fair and equitable services to students, alumni and employers. These policies are designed to 1.) maintain a recruitment process that is fair and equitable and 2.) support informed and responsible decision making by candidates.

NACE PRINCIPLES

1. Practice reasonable, responsible, and transparent behavior … • That consciously avoids harmful actions by embodying high ethical standards. • By clearly articulating and widely disseminating your organization’s policies and guidelines. • That guarantees equitable services for all constituencies. • That is commensurate with professional association standards and principles. • When resolving differences and addressing concerns. • By nurturing sustainable relationships that are respectful and transcend transactions.

14 | Emporia State University

Protect confidentiality of: • All personal information related to candidates and their interviews, and their engagement with services, programs, and resources. • Student information related to professional plans.

Official Recruiting Visits

We ask employers to work through and/ or include Career Services when engaging in recruiting or other campus engagement activities. All regulations regarding ESU vendor contracts and policies of the Memorial Union must be followed. We strongly discourage employers from “dropping in” unannounced to classrooms or passing around sign-up sheets to gather student information. If this occurs, Career Services will contact that employer directly to address this “unofficial” recruiting activity.

Right to Refuse Service

Emporia State Career Services reserves the right to refuse service to any employer that violates the NACE Principles for Professional Practice or any ESU policy and/or for factors including: • Misrepresentation of information, dishonesty, fraud, or lack of information • Lacks an operational website or other information used to verify a legitimate business • Is a home-based position not affiliated with an official business (in-home babysitting, senior companions, pet sitting, etc.) • Opportunities and/or mission of employer is inappropriate or does not align with our service population • Complaints by students, faculty, staff or alumni • Breach of confidentiality • Discriminatory or questionable recruiting practices • Discrimination or harassment of ESU students, faculty, staff, or alumni • Requires personal information of candidates such as bank or social security numbers • Opportunities that require the candidate to provide upfront payment of any kind • Financial balances owed to Career Services for past recruiting or services • Failure to adhere to Career Services policies

and/or any violation of ESU rules and regulations, and local, state, or federal laws.

Fairs and Same Day/Next Day Interviews

Employers who register for an in-person fair are eligible to schedule same day or next day interviews on campus. Employers must first register for the fair in Handshake, then request same day or next day interviews through your Handshake account or by contacting Career Services staff. Career Services will only approve same day or next day interview requests for employers who are registered for the preceding fair. There is no charge to use interview space in the Memorial Union. Career Services staff will review requests and schedule interview rooms with the Memorial Union staff.

Third Party Recruiter Policy

According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) “Principles for Career Services Professionals”, thirdparty recruiters are agencies, organizations, or individuals recruiting candidates for temporary, part-time, or full-time employment opportunities other than for their own needs. This includes entities that refer or recruit for profit or not for profit, and it includes agencies that collect student information to be disclosed to employers for purposes of recruitment and employment. Third party recruiters are expected to disclose to applicants the name(s) of client(s) that the third party recruiter is representing and to whom the applicant’s credentials will be disclosed. Third party recruiters are prohibited from reviewing resumes or interviewing candidates for one client and then referring candidates to additional clients without first providing both the Career Center and the candidate(s) the name of the additional client(s).
