Same Day Assessments Provided
When someone reaches out for help during a behavioral health crisis, what they need most is to be met with compassion, urgency, and understanding. At Horizon, our Same-Day Access and Emergency Services are rooted in a simple promise: no one should have to wait for care when they are struggling. In 2025, Horizon conducted 2,616 same-day assessments, ensuring individuals and families across Central Virginia can access care the moment they were ready to ask for help.
These assessments connect people quickly to services that support safety, stabilization, and a path forward. Impressively, 90% of individuals who received Same Day Services were scheduled for their first appointment with 10 business days.

This year marked a milestone in how our community responds to crisis with the investment in Horizon’s new Crisis Care Center and the continued expansion of our Mobile Crisis Response and Marcus Alert Teams. Working in partnership with Virginia’s 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, our mobile teams meet individuals where they are at home, in the community, or wherever help is needed—offering a compassionate alternative to emergency rooms or law enforcement involvement.

"Right now, there is likely no greater issue in our community and day-to-day operations for law enforcement than mental health. The Crisis Care Center is a triumph for our community that we can all celebrate.”
- Chris Faraldi, Horizon Board Member

Horizon’s new Crisis Care Center is a transformative investment in how Central Virginia responds to behavioral health emergencies. Slated to open in 2026, the center will offer same-day, community-based crisis care for adults experiencing acute mental health or substance use crises. Designed as an alternative to emergency rooms and inpatient hospitalization, the Crisis Care Center will provide walk-in mental health evaluations, 23-hour observation, residential crisis stabilization, and detox services—all in one location. By keeping individuals closer to their natural supports and connecting them quickly to ongoing care, the center will serve as a place of safety, dignity, and hope for hundreds of Central Virginians just in its first year ensuring that when crisis strikes, the right help is available, close to home.
Leading with heart means showing up calmly, quickly, and without judgment during life’s most vulnerable moments. Through same-day access, mobile response, and crisis stabilization, Horizon continues to change how Central Virginia experiences behavioral health emergencies: with dignity, humanity, and hope.

At Horizon, innovation means meeting the mental health and substance use needs of our community with evidence-based care, data-driven solutions, and collaborative approaches. Leading with heart means not only treating challenges when they arise, but also preventing them before they start.
Through the TREE Program now entering its second year with SAMHSA funding Horizon provides adolescents and transitional-aged youth (ages 12–25) with comprehensive support for substance use and co-occurring mental health challenges. Using the Adolescent Community Reinforcement Approach (A-CRA), TREE equips youth with skills for long-term recovery, while offering case management, tobacco cessation education, and collaboration with schools, courts, and community partners. In 2025, 52 youth have received services, with follow-up completion rates far exceeding national benchmarks, reflecting the program’s effectiveness in fostering lasting impact.
“I do monthly check-ins with Horizon. [They] give me things that I can practice that will help me cope. For example, I tend to get angry fast when I’m listening to someone. When that happens, [they] taught me to use my 5 senses: to look around and name something I see, something I smell, something I hear, and so on. It has helped me pause and listen fully before responding. It helps me think rationally.” - TREE Program Client

"The impact our teams have in our community is profound; and it all comes down to heart. Their genuine care and enthusiasm for understanding our clients unique needs and finding solutions for barriers identified is improving access and sustaining recovery across all of our programs.”
- Sherri Walker-Thacker, Senior Clinical Director
Horizon also strengthens the community through prevention-focused initiatives, equipping youth and adults with the knowledge, skills, and resources to make healthier choices. Programs such as Mental Health First Aid and Too Good for Drugs teach life skills, reduce stigma, and promote mental wellness. In 2025, 98% of youth participating in Too Good for Drugs reported gaining valuable knowledge about substance use risks, fueling advocacy and peer-led prevention efforts across Central Virginia.
By integrating innovative treatment, prevention, and community collaboration, Horizon is advancing a model of behavioral health care that is proactive, accessible, and sustainable ensuring individuals and families can thrive today and in the future.
