Welcome to
HORICON
Welcome to Horicon, a place we like to call home. We are very glad that you have visited and we hope you enjoy the bounty of resources that Horicon has to offer. Hundreds of thousands of visitors come to the area to enjoy the wonderful natural resources, to look for birds in the marsh they’ve never seen before, to hike trails that date back to the days of Native Americans, to hunt and trap, or to bike on roads and trails that offer spectacular vistas of animals and landscapes. Whatever the reason for visiting, there’s one more thing that we’d love for you to know. We call this place our home because we enjoy a lower cost of living and a higher quality of life. The Horicon Phoenix Program has been working to add even more benefits for people who call Horicon “home.” This booklet is intended to introduce you to a few of our events. We invite you to join us here.

“The old house is quite beautiful with original woodwork and stained glass. Along our way to the room, the innkeeper explained that there was complimentary sodas and microwave popcorn in the common area along with a wide array of DVDs. Before handing over our old-fashioned skeleton key to our room, she asked what time we would be down for breakfast so that it would be ready when we were ready, a great personal touch.” -- TripAdvisor Review

Grand Opening August 22, 2015
The Great Hunting Ground
Twelve thousand years ago, a massive glacier covering Wisconsin and much of the upper Midwest retreated northward after maintaining its icy grip on the landscape for close to 60,000 years. It left behind a broad, shallow basin that caught the melting ice and sediment to form what is today's Horicon Marsh. Starting in August 2015, visitors to a dramatic new series of exhibits at the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center will be able to trace the history of this great gathering place and hunting ground through the ages. The interactive and educational displays include a walk-through glacier, woolly mammoth and dioramas showing how the arrival of early humans opened a new chapter in the marsh's history. During the retreat of the glacier, a land bridge under what is now the Bering Strait connected the continents of North America and Asia. A comparatively mild climate allowed several thousand early humans to begin a migration from the Eastern Siberian steppe, searching for a home full of wildlife and fertile grounds, enough to sustain their way of life.
Some of the Paleo-Indian people followed the edge of the retreating Wisconsin glacier and ultimately made their home in the region surrounding Horicon Marsh. The stone weapons and tools they used to pursue large game, including mammoth, left a lasting legacy. This history helped inspire the new interactive exhibits and it is a talking Clovis (a type of spear point) point that welcomes visitors and serves as a narrator for the journey through time. In addition to sharing the history of the marsh, the Clovis point's story highlights the restoration and wildlife management efforts that have again made the marsh home to a rich array of birds, animals, fish, plants & insects. Explore the many, varied ecosystems of the marsh, including the wildlife and habitats, as well as the human history that shaped our state.

Discher Park Historic Preservation Discher Park houses two historically significant buildings: the Discher Park Dance Hall and the Discher Park Pavilion. In 2014 the Horicon Phoenix Program funded exterior renovations of the Dance Hall, which included replacement of rotten boards and painting the entire building. The Discher Park Pavilion, commonly known as the “Teen Center,” was built in 1909. Since then the pavilion has been used for countless community and family events. It is the most rented park building in Horicon. In 2014 we became aware that it was in danger of being torn down by the city due to extensive repairs that are needed to keep it a safe and useful building. The Horicon Phoenix Program stepped up and has convinced the city to save this historic building. We’ll be funding the needed repairs, which will include building a new foundation in 2015, and in 2016 we’ll repair the roof and paint the building. We appreciate any financial support you can contribute to save this important piece of Horicon’s History. "Preservationists are the only people in the world invariably confirmed in their wisdom after the fact." --John Kenneth Galbraith

Playground Improvement Project
In June 2014 the Horicon Phoenix Program funded, coordinated and installed new playground equipment in Kiwanis Park. The focus at this playground was to add more equipment that is handicap accessible and toddler friendly as well as providing more activities for older children. Special thanks for the Kiwanis Park project go out to BCI Burke Playground Equipment, Horicon DPW, Alliant Energy, United Cooperative, Land O'Lakes Foundation, Horicon Girl Scouts, and other local anonymous donations. The next phase of our playground project will focus on the two playground areas in River Bend Park. We’ll be adding equipment to both areas with the same goals in mind: • Handicap accessibility • Toddler friendly • More activities for older children Funding for this project is ongoing with a goal of $30, 000. We have received donation pledges totaling $7000 from the Shopko Foundation, Beaver Dam Community Hospitals, Horicon Kiwanis Club and Horicon Lions Club. Please consider a donation to this worthwhile project!

The Belle Weather is a hurricane. We are acoustic guitars, stories, and melody. We are the resonant, pounding beat of a kick drum, the deep pulse of a bass guitar, and the siren's wail of an over-driven tube amp. We are open fields and skyscrapers - equal parts modernfolk and alternative rock - a fusion of inspired anthems and the art of simple storytelling. Over the years, we've taken a great many influences and blended them into a sound that is uniquely our own. We've built a reputation by approaching every stage we can find with arare combination of gritty, sweat-drenched energy and honest, heart-felt sonic grace. We love doing what we do, and feel very fortunate to have a fan base that is as musically adventurous as we've always tried to be.

There's a new band on the rockabilly/swing circuit in town and it's The Get Hot. The band, which has just issued its first CD, includes four veteran musicians that have worked in a variety of local groups and is now firmly focused on blending the best of American roots music – from blues to rockabilly to western swing to jazz – into a toe-tapping sound designed to get you out of your seat. It's all about energy and motion. It's up-tempo blues tunes that make you want to jump on the dance floor and cut loose. We often attract members of the local swing dancing clubs, so the dancing is as entertaining as the music. By the end of the night, we all go home exhausted.

The two-time WAMI (Wisconsin Area Music Industry) award winning Squeezettes are noted as one the state’s most unique attractions. Fronted by ex-burlesque chanteuse turned old school torch singer, Chanel le Meaux, the band plays an eclectic blend of "power polka" pop, rock, and other kitschy favorites. Where else can you find a high energy band with adorable little ladies playing big, beautiful Baldoni accordions, a free range tuba player, and a drummer that sings and plays a pickle bucket? If you’re looking for a good time, call the Squeezettes!

The Cajun Strangers are based out of Madison, WI, and are one of the Midwest's premier Cajun music bands. They have two CDs out on the Swallow Records label (based out of Ville Platte, LA), and both have won an award called Prix Dehors De Nous (The Best Outside of Us) from the Cajun French Music Association in Louisiana. They primarily play the traditional Cajun dance music from Southwest Louisiana, and try to reproduce this energetic style as closely as they can to the bands that play down South. The music consists of two steps, waltzes and blues, and is sung mostly in Cajun French.

Lisa Ridgely, founder and leader of her Fainting Room crew, started performing as a solo singer-songwriter in 2009, and started her solo career collaborating with local musicians including Sigmund Snopek and Chris DeMay, among others. Her solo efforts grew into a full band in 2011 (Lisa Ridgely & The Fainting Room); an acoustic singer-songwriter meets Americana twang and harmonies meets screaming rock guitar solos kind of deal. It’s a potent and dynamic mashup of the genres that influence the band as individuals and as a group.
