Welcome to Horicon

The name itself reminds you of the

natural wonderland located on our northern city limits.

For centuries people have come to this area to embrace the sacred beauty of the Horicon Marsh. The city that is the marsh’s namesake is quickly gaining the attention of visitors, employers, and new residents.

Now celebrating our 10th year, the Horicon Phoenix Program helps to promote the area’s resources, and works to make the city a better place to live, and to visit.

Included in this booklet is information on everything we’re doing this year. Whether you are a life-long resident, or you hap-

pened to find yourself here for a day or two, we’re so glad you could join us for the events we’ve planned this year.

Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center

Come See The New Explorium!

Now Open

The Great Hunting Ground Visitors have a unique opportunity to travel through time as they explore some of the exciting new features on display at the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center. Long before Horicon Marsh achieved international status as an important bird and wildlife area and a destination for outdoor recreation, glaciers carved a basin where a wetland would one day form. Today, guests of Horicon Marsh’s Explorium can get a glimpse of life at Horicon Marsh thousands of years before European settlement and witness how the current wetland came to be. The experience is narrated by a Clovis point (spear head), that keeps visitors company throughout the journey as they view, listen to, touch, and even smell exhibits that document the changes to the marsh over time.

Videos and interactive displays greet guests at every turn, encouraging audiences of any age to learn more about the history and ecology of Horicon Marsh. A wooly mammoth replica that children are free to touch and climb represents wildlife that roamed the land during the Ice Age and also served as an important food source for early Native Americans.

Relics from the age of European settlement as well as modern hunting and trapping equipment illustrate the marsh’s popularity as a waterfowl hunting site. Games encourage visitors to learn about wildlife identification. Viewers can also gain a singularly thrilling perspective on the management and conservation activities currently occurring on the marsh before heading out to enjoy it for themselves. These exhibits are just a taste of the many educational themes the new Explorium features.

Discher Park Pavilion Save the Discher Park Pavilion Between 1873 and 1890, farmland owned

by Charles Discher on the northeast edge of Horicon was taken over by the village of Horicon. It was used as a driving park where citizens of the village could exercise their horses and carriages. This became Horicon’s first public park. By 1890, an oval-shaped track had been laid out on these flat grounds to accommodate occasional horse races. Eventually, the need for a more permanent building on the grounds, led to the construction of the New Park Pavilion, now known as the Teen Center. Built in 1909 by C. Firehammer & Sons, an American Craftsman Style-influenced A stylistic utilitarian frame construction, it cost $1000.00 to build. More or less extant and intact today, the building has a long and fondly remembered history by many of the citizens of Horicon.

Through the years, the building has been used extensively, and is still being used today by private citizens for various gatherings and for such events as Jersey Street Music Festival and Autumn Art on the Marsh. It is definitely showing it’s years.

At some point throughout it’s more recent history, the City has lacked the funds to upkeep and maintain the building, and has decided that it would be easier to tear it down, not putting up another building in it’s place. Not only would we, the citizens of Horicon, be losing another of our City’s historic buildings, but we would also be losing a rentable building for functions such as those listed above. We need to act quickly to preserve this historic landmark as we’ve been given a deadline of October 2019. The estimated cost of the renovations is $60,000.00.
