Horicon

A Brief History

The city of Horicon today is built entirely built upon hundreds if not thousands of ancient as well as more historic period Native American burials; and this attests to its long prehistoric occupation as a favorite area for habitation among many Native American cultures over many thousands of years. Today archaeologists refer to these myriad mound building cultures as being part of the Woodland Tradition which stretches from about 800 B.C. until about A.D. 1350. Many of these different mound building cultures inhabited the Horicon Marsh and upper Rock River throughout this time period all bring their different mound building styles and ritualism. Many ethnographic researchers and archaeologists have attributed the construction of Late Woodland Period (A.D. 700 – A.D. 1200) effigy mounds to the early ancestors of the Winnebago in this region. Some decedents of the Winnebago claim them to be direct descendants of the mound builders, thus tying themselves to the landscape of Dodge County for thousands of years.

This continues to be a hotly debated subject between various Native American tribes and modern ethnological and archaeological researchers. Winnebago myths, stories, legends, and cosmological beliefs illustrate in their oral traditions a rich and varied account of the Winnebago people; and the development of their clan systems that seemingly tie them directly to effigy mound shape construction. Mounds in the shapes of bears, deer, birds of various types, water panthers, and turtles just to name a few. Many of these effigy mound types are preserved in the Nitschke Mounds County Park just outside of Horicon in Burnett Township on County Highway E, two miles west of Horicon.

horicon history

In the early history of Dodge County Wisconsin in the area we now call Horicon there were numerous groups of Native American peoples that lived on the Horicon Marsh and the Rock River; and utilized the land and water with its numerous natural resources.

Among these groups of people were the Potawatomi, Menomonee, the Sauk and Fox, the Sioux, and most notably, the Winnebago; or as they refer to themselves today as the Ho Chunk Nation of Wisconsin. One of the earliest historical mentions of the Winnebago people in the Horicon area was related by Satterlee Clark in the pages of the History of Dodge County Wisconsin 1880 in which Clark describes his layover in Horicon during a portage from Lake Winnebago and its southern outlet the Fond du Lac River to the upper Rock River. At the southern mouth of the Horicon Marsh on the night of September 2, 1830, Clark recollects: “White Breast” (Maunk-Shak-Kah, as the Winnebago pronounced it) was for many years one of the many noted Winnebago villages on the upper Rock River where the city of Horicon now stands.” Clark states: “I slept in an Indian lodge on the east bank of Rock River, where Horicon now stands. There were two rows of lodges (wigwams) extending several rods north from a point near where the Milwaukee & St. Paul Bridge (railroad trestle) now spans the Rock River. The population of White Breast, I should judge, was close to two thousand-bucks, squaws, and papooses.

I was on my way in the company of a Winnebago Indian named White Ox to an Indian settlement at the head of Lake Koshkonong. I was but fourteen years of age, and lived with my father at Fort Winnebago. The Indians treated me well, and I have no cause to complain of ill-usage at their hands at any time during the seventeen years thereafter that I traded with them. They always possessed and exhibited the warmest friendship for me, and now, when a few scattered remnants of the once powerful tribe that inhabited Southeastern Wisconsin come to Horicon, they never go away without paying me a visit.”

Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center

Come See The New Explorium!

Now Open

The Great Hunting Ground Visitors have a unique opportunity to travel through time as they explore some of the exciting new features on display at the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center. Long before Horicon Marsh achieved international status as an important bird and wildlife area and a destination for outdoor recreation, glaciers carved a basin where a wetland would one day form. Today, guests of Horicon Marsh’s Explorium can get a glimpse of life at Horicon Marsh thousands of years before European settlement and witness how the current wetland came to be. The experience is narrated by a Clovis point (spear head), that keeps visitors company throughout the journey as they view, listen to, touch, and even smell exhibits that document the changes to the marsh over time.

Videos and interactive displays greet guests at every turn, encouraging audiences of any age to learn more about the history and ecology of Horicon Marsh. A wooly mammoth replica that children are free to touch and climb represents wildlife that roamed the land during the Ice Age and also served as an important food source for early Native Americans.

Relics from the age of European settlement as well as modern hunting and trapping equipment illustrate the marsh’s popularity as a waterfowl hunting site. Games encourage visitors to learn about wildlife identification.

Viewers can also gain a singularly thrilling perspective on the management and conservation activities currently occurring on the marsh before heading out to enjoy it for themselves.

These exhibits are just a taste of the many educational themes the new Explorium features.

The Discher Park Pavilion is the oldest public-use historic building in the City of Horicon. Originally used as a facility serving a horse racing track that pre-dates the construction of Discher Park, the pavilion has been used over the years as a Teen Center, a meeting place for countless family reunions, as the headquarters for Horicon’s annual Marsh Days events, Rock ‘n River Jam, Horicon Chamber of Commerce’s Autumn Art On The Marsh and most recently the Jersey Street Music Festival.

Over time and with the dwindling of public funds necessary to maintain the building, it has deteriorated to the point that it is almost unusable. Horicon Phoenix Program is working to raise enough funds through private donations and foundation grants to repair the building. The most recent estimate to repair the building is about $60,000.00 and includes: • Raising the building and rebuilding the foundation • Repairing, replacing and repainting the exterior wood • Repair of electrical • Making the facility ADA compliant • Installing a new roof

MIXED NUTS

Mixed Nuts was formed by a group of lifelong friends that share a love of music.

The band is unique in that we have eleven musicians that are interchangeable throughout the show. Many of the musicians play more than one instrument, which allows us to avoid having to taking breaks between sets.

The song list is versatile to fit our audience. We play rock (classic, modern, and hard) along with some country music.

Our three vocalists complement each other while remaining distinctive to each other in their singing styles. Another aspect setting Mixed Nuts apart is the variety of musical instruments on stage.

HEAVY LOOKS

Heavy Looks are an aggressive power pop band based out of Madison, WI. Rosalind Greiert, Dirk Gunderson, Jarad Olson, and Shawn Pierce have been breathing music for the better parts of their lives. In 2014, the band released their debut EP, Sense Growing Dull, and made their presence known in the Madison music scene. Live, the band’s an energetic force, trading vocal leads with ease and tapping into something that feels genuinely powerful.

December 2015, the band released their first full-length, Waste It Right, available for download through their website. The lead singer of the Spin Doctors follows them on Twitter. You should too.

IAN AND THE DREAM

Musician Ian Ash of Ian & The Dream was determined to stay true to his self-image. He was the geek in his school, the only boy with long hair, and the only kid who was listening to the Beatles instead of rap. Musically, how would he fit in with the current trends?

The answer was unclear until a Grammy award winning record producer saw something special in Ian and took him to record in the world’s largest residential recording studio to produce his debut, Ian & The Dream. That same year, he performed an opening slot for the Beach Boys, afterwards Beach Boy Bruce Johnston praised Ian’s singing. Ian & The Dream got a home page feature on popular music website Reverbnation and scored another opening slot for more modern artists too- “Nashville” TV stars Lennon & Maisy.

AURALAI

With Stephanie Tschech providing a foundation of cello and voice, complemented by mulit-instrumentalist Nate Lehner, Auralai combines the best of classical beauty with pop-esque rhythm and melody. Stephanie’s abstract but vivid lyrics and complex yet catchy rhythm and melodies make for an etherial mood, sometimes haunting, sometimes hilarious, always fiercely engaging. No slave to both conventional songwriting and classical cello form, Auralai brings a much needed fresh breed of indie-pop music that is nothing short of captivating.

CHRISTOPHER GOLD AND THE NEW OLD THINGS

It just may be that the most punk rock thing Christopher Gold ever did was leave punk rock behind.

The 30-year-old musician spent the last half-decade endearing himself to Fox Cities music fans as the centerpiece of the blues- and punk-infused band the Dirty Rotten So & So’s.

But in the past few years, the tattooed, bearded and plaid-clad rocker has turned his focus away from the sweaty basements and rowdy bars that the So & So’s filled with rock and roll. In its place, Gold has been feeding his creative needs as a bluegrass and folk singer-songwriter, most often wielding an acoustic guitar or mandolin, stomping his way through songs of family, friendship and personal struggles.

One man band based out of Wausau WI. Even though there is only one of me, I make the sound of a full band with the art of live looping.

An orchestral indie rock band based out of South Minneapolis. The 6-piece ensemble features songwriter/frontman Peter Miller’s unique voice and guitar, Jeremiah Satterthwaite (guitar/banjo), Leah Ottman (violin/voice/keys), Hilary James (cello/voice/keys), Travis Collins (bass), and Stephen Lindquist (drums/ voice). Crafting dynamic, intimate songs to create energetic rhythms and intricate melodies. Their heartfelt arrangements evoke shared nostalgic feelings of love and loss.

The band has recently recorded their second full-length album, Picture [Portrait], based off of 350 letters written by Peter’s grandfather to his grandmother while he was stationed in the Southwest Pacific during WWII. The songs communicate complex ideas delivered with pop-sensible charm. His grandmother loves this album. You just might too.

Allegedly founded at a bible camp, and born in the back valleys of Western Wisconsin, Them Coulee Boys craft a brand of Americana that blends punk, bluegrass, and rock & roll. Guitar, banjo, mandolin, bass, and a lone kick drum provide the pulse that drives underneath the conversational yet thoughtful lyrics. From love letters and farewell fights, to fists raised in protest with a hand held in harmony, the songs are reflections on the current state of the world, and in turn, ourselves. The lyrics and singing of Soren Staff are complemented by the reckless banjo stylings of Beau Janke, the deft mandolin work of Jens Staff, and the thump of bass/ kick drummer Neil Krause, Them Coulee Boys are sure to make it “impossible not to bob your head, shake your legs, or even strum your fingers along with the beat” (The Spectator).

Canyon Spells is an independent folk-pop band consisting of Jimmie Linville, Daniel Pingrey and other friends who sit in from time to time. Friends since high school, and hailing from the secluded town of Baraboo, WI, they formed in 2009 and have released two full length albums, “Sweet Teeth” and “Death Head.” Their sound is a dichotomy of forces: Pingrey’s heady musicality and lush arrangements starkly compliment Linville’s catchy melodies, heartfelt lyrics and canyon voice.

BROTHERS BURN MOUNTAIN

Based out of Duluth, MN, The Brothers Burn Mountain are a soulful, energetic, eclectic duo of real-life brothers, Ryan and Jesse Dermody. They’ve been playing music together everyday as a duo for more than 16 years. They’ve released 8 full-length albums of original music, and have toured across the country over the years, though especially in the Midwest, having played more than 1,400 live shows. Though difficult to try and put their sound into words, some have called it avant-garde blues rock, though basically it is really just good-ol’ rock n’ roll with a very personal and strange twist of bluesy tastes.

CAJUN STRANGERS

The Cajun Strangers are one of the Midwest’s premier Cajun music dance bands. Born out of their love for Louisiana porch music, the band performs Cajun and Zydeco dance music with “unbridled energy and contagious enthusiasm that’s more than enough to entice the most sedentary patron to rise up and shake what their mama gave’em.” (Dirty Linen Magazine) The Strangers feature accordionist, Tom “Big Nick” Nickel, who created the popular Milwaukee based bnd, “Big Nick and the Cydecos,” well respected fiddler Brian O’Donnell, and guitarist, Scott Mullarky, who grew up in a French-speaking home in the Lafayette area. Scott has also has run the popular New Orleans style jug band Boo Bradley of Madison for many years. The rhythm section is filled out by bassist Joel Johnson and drummer Colin Bazsali.

Simon Balto’s work has garnered praise from critics both local, regional, national, and international. The Irish music publication Deadly Music! has compared his songwriting to top-of-his-game, Blood on the Tracks-era Dylan. The Chicago-based music curator Music Means Family said the following: “An unbelievable talent, his layered folk ballads are reminiscent of Baez and Dylan, Guthrie and Prine.

There is a deeply satisfying componentto each of his songs – a reminder of home, woodsmoke, and the first traces of your breath as winter begins to settle.”

He has been featured on Wisconsin Public Television, Wisconsin Public Radio, Big Top Chautauqua’s Tent Show Radio, Daytrotter, and has supported and shared stages with a wide range of artists in recent years, from Jason Isbell to Johnnyswim, Field Report to Anderson East, Peter Mulvey to Communist Daughter, Charlie Parr to Horseshoes & Hand Grenades.

Known for their progressive song writing and energetic live performances, Mo Lowda & The Humble’s beginnings were in the beer-soaked basements of Philadelphia. Following the release of their first full length album in 2013, the trio, consisting of Jordan Caiola, Shane Woods, and Nate Matulis began playing venues throughout the city. 2015 was highlighted by shows throughout the country and plays at notable summer festivals such as Firefly. The band’s 2016 sophomore release, ‘Act Accordingly’, is a short and sweet embodiment of the band’s natural progression; refining their already formidable sound. In February, Jeff Lucci stepped in as the new bassist, bringing his unique songwriting and tasteful use of effects pedals into the mix. Mo Lowda will begin demo-ing for a new record this fall.

DEAD HORSES Originally hailing from a small Wisconsin

town made world famous by a pair of overalls (Oshkosh, B’Gosh), the now Milwaukee-based band have cultivated a sensibility well beyond their years due in part to the powerful musical and literary force that is their frontwoman and songwriter, Sarah Vos. Raised on Bible Hymns by her preacher father, Vos’ backstory sounds more like that of an old bluesman from the Mississippi Delta than a young folk singer from Wisconsin. Despite their youth, Dead Horses have crafted a timeless sound, informed as much by modern roots music as it is by the classics.

Following the release of their sophomore album Space and Time in 2014, Dead Horses have toured tirelessly. From ballrooms to festivals, and most recently with a drummer in tow, Dead Horses have performed with Trampled by Turtles, Mandolin Orange, and Elephant Revival, as well as on mainstages at Bristol Rhythm and Roots, WinterWonderGrass, Americana Music Festival, and Red Ants Pants.

SEASAW

Seasaw is Eve Wilczewski and Meg Golz, who are the sea and saw respectively. Fate and a small-town restaurant in Freeport, IL brought them together for the first time in 2010.

Seasaw collaborated through four years of long-distance until the summer of 2015, when Eve joined Meg in their current residence of Madison, WI. Seasaw has since grown their powerful and charismatic sound in a way that can only be accomplished when best friends are living and creating within blocks of each other.

THE KICKBACK

Comprised of Billy Yost (vocals, guitar), Jonny Ifergan (guitar), Daniel Leu (Bass), and Ryan Farnham (drums), Chicago’s The Kickback is a result of Billy’s emigration to The Windy City from rural South Dakota in late 2009 and the subsequent Craigslist pleas seeking out band members. The group’s music (with songs exploring journalists banding together in the early 1980s to battle the decline of print journalism through sheer ultra-violence to the emasculation of trying to protect the woman you love in a city you don’t understand in a body you know is eventually going in the ground) have earned the group wide praise from Rolling Stone, Sound Opinions contributor Jim Derogatis, You Ain’t No Picasso, the Chicago Tribune, and many more.

THE MASCOT THEORY

With the release of their Nashville-recorded album Hand Me Down Miracles and the follow up Esperanto EP, The Mascot Theory is set to be the next band in that category to make a major impact, as they have quickly moved up the popularity ranks of Madison’s music scene. They balance on an alternative folk influence with a rootsy bluegrass blended Americana feel.

Along with a 2016 WAMI (Wisconsin Area Music Industry) nomination for best Americana/folk artist, The Mascot Theory has won 12 MAMA (Madison Area Music Association) awards including the coveted 2016 Artist of the Year award. They have played major festivals throughout the state including Summerfest, Freak Fest, and Mile of Music Festival, and have played shows with national acts Guster, Vance Joy, Blitzen Trapper, Frank Turner, Kaleo, Chase Rice, The Cadillac Three, and The Wild Feathers. The band has released two full length albums (one of which was recorded in Nashville) and most recently they released a teaser EP in advance of their upcoming 3rd full length album to be released Fall 2016.

BRETT NEWSKI

Living on four continents in five years, Brett Newski has existed on the fringe of society and avoided the “American Dream” at all costs. His story is no fairy tale. He didn’t get signed to a big label early in his career. He was not endorsed by cool guitar companies or big-time management. At age 25, he took matters into his own hands by quitting all of his part-time jobs and becoming a full-time nomad, posting up in the nooks and crannies of earth and sub-letting rooms in Vietnam, South Africa, Germany and Wisconsin to write songs and recharge between tours. Newski’s sophomore LP “Land, Air, Sea, Garage” was recorded at a surf camp in the Sri Lankan jungle, and at home in Wisconsin. The album is about diving into the world with no safety net and landing on your feet. It’s a smart indie rock n’ roll record with tongue-in-cheek moments that show parallels to Jonathan Richman, Mountain Goats, early Weezer, Frank Turner, & Elliot Smith.
