PERSONAL STATEMENT Hi, my name is Horace. I am a creative with a strong enthusiasm for architectural design.

What would I want most in this field? Well, having my name read alongside that of Architect David Mutiso has a nice ring to it. But I want more, or maybe less; I would love to be at the forefront of coming up with a solution to the housing crisis in most African Cities; Think about Architectural advocacy in spatial equality. I find Architecture a beautiful vocation, and this is not only because it gives me the opportunity to create recognizable structures that will ultimately outlive me, it is because it affords me the opportunity to see real-time influence of my work in people’s lives. I am eager to contribute to innovative projects and work with like-minded professionals in the construction industry.

Kivulini Apartment is a one bedroom and studio unit luxury apartment. It is part of my 5th Year Studio ‘Eastlands Urban Housing Project’ that is featured later in this portfolio. While the original model makes an emphasis on affordable construction materials, the material palette used here seeks to attain to high-end living. I used this model to work on my camera setting, texturing, lighting and furnishing skills in Lumion. Render Post Production in Adobe Photoshop CC has been explored. This project sub-set also provided an opportunity to delve into Industry standard Construction Drawing presentation and documentation.

LANG’WENDA HOME Molo South | Nakuru Couty | Kenya

The Lang’wenda home is a 5-bedroomed house proposal for the lush farmlands of Molo South, Nakuru County. An open plan kitchen, dining and living area, statement headroom and natural lighting were central tenets of the project brief. To achieve this, beam to floor windows are done on both the living area and the dining break out area, expansive windows are done on all spaces and additional light allowed to penetrate through the clerestory windows. There was an insistence to create large spaces at all levels.

The front yard of the house is designed to be large enough to host group gatherings and general recreational activities. Landscaping that marries into the sorrounding area is also proposed. Fireplaces serve both aesthetic and functional elements in what is a predominantly cold setting.

This project gave me an opportunity to handle real-world scenarios.

MATERIALITY The first thing that captures your eyes while you look at this building, or any other building for that matter, is its shape or form.

But this is undoubtedly achieved through the use of materials. The choice of this projcet’s material palette was informed largely by the availability and cost of materials and the need to achieve a deep earthy and warm tone. Towards this end, we used site- cast burnt brick and concrete pavers for outdoor circulation. Due to its cost, we limited the use of timber flooring to the common lounge and its color and texture is to be complimented by furniture, cabinetry and soft furnishing. Tiles of different sizes, color and texture are used in different spaces to meet specific moods and fucntions. Granite slate cladding is used to make a statement entrance while other outdoor facades are plastered and, or keyed.

MUTHURWA | NAIROBI COUNTY | KENYA

URBAN LAYERS

SPACES The brief for this Urban Planning Project was simple; To create a utopian city; beautiful and functional. The new city was to admit commercial, residential, public utility, public purpose, educational, mixed use and industrial land uses; all in proportions that optimally utilize a location that is in close proximity to Nairobi’s Central Business District, Muthurwa Market, Nyamakima Bus Stage and Eastleigh.

The masterplan organizing principle is radial symmetry. The concept is an orange fruit section. The core of the fruit represents the River Front Park Centre while the fruit section walls represent circulation. The juice sacs represent the various land uses in this site. The urban layers shown above strip the project and highlight critical functions in isolation.

There is a hierarchy in the creation of lung spaces for the project with the smallest green spaces being at the outdoor of individual buildings, then at clusters and culminating at the River Front.

‘Learning from Bosco Verticale’ is a 5th Year Studio Mixed Use Development Project proposal for Nairobi’s Muthurwa Area. The design concept for the 40-floor development is box transformation and makes an emphasis on environmental sustainability principles. The facades and balconies are designed and reinforced to accommodate trees, shrubs and other plants. Commercial retail services are accommodated on the three-floor podium while offices occupy floors 4-19. Residential units of different sizes occupy floors 20-40.

NGUGI HOUSE

Pipeline | Nakuru County | Kenya The Ngugi house is a 4-bedroom maisonette spread out on a quarter acre piece of land in Pipeline, one of Nakuru’s suburbs. The architectural approach to this project stemmed from the client’s brief and the need to have a style that is modern and immersive.

Key attention was paid to floor and ceiling levels and window sizes to allow admission of maximum amounts of daylight into the house and to somehow reduce the outdoor-indoor gradient. The entrance porch and the common living area are double volumed which creates a sense of compression and release when one approaches them from other spaces. There was an insistence to create an open plan kitchen and

8.0 Mild Steel Door Supply and fix the following purpose made mild steel casement small panes of 4mm thickclear sheet glass fixed with approved putty (maximum pane size 425* 375mm) doors, with standard section framing including all coupling mullions etc. factory primed with zinc chromate red oxide primer including cutting and pining, fixing lugs to concrete or masonry work jambs; bedding in cement and sand (1:3) mortar, pointing all round frames in mastic, easing, oiling and adjusting opening light on completion including burglar proofing comprising of 25mm wide*3mm thick mild steel flat, cut, jointed. welded and set to matcHframe, minimum 2mm thick steel sheet bottom infill panel, rolled steel section frames including framing, fixing lugs and all necessary iron monger such as 5 lever steel casement door lock, hinges, handles and all other necessary operating accessories, surface finishes and three coats automotive spray paint all in accordance with the Architect’s door schedule.

8.2 Timber Panel Door Wrot seasoned mahogany selected and kept clean 50mm thick solid hardwood panel doors leaf and frames.

Contractor to allow for onsite surface preparation and finishing with 3 coats approved lacquer vanish. framing, fixing lugs and all necessary iron monger such as 5 lever steel casement door lock, hinges, handles and all other necessary operating accessories, surface finishes and three coats automotive spray paint all in accordance with the Architect’s door schedule.

9. RC Column Reinforced Concrete column structural size and reinforcement details to S.E. Plastered and painted to Architect’s specifications.
