Infrared thermometers don’t kill neurons TERMÓMETROS INFRARROJOS NO MATAN LAS NEURONAS By | Por Redacción | Reynosa, Tam.
The information circulating on social networks about the alleged damage caused by infrared light from thermometers to neurons is false. “Danger: do not let them measure the temperature in your head, it kills brain neurons, they do it in your hand”, they spread on Facebook and WhatsApp groups, giving this information as true. Dr. Pedro Daniel Pulido Flores clarified that this device is essential biomedical equipment in sanitary filters and does not cause any harm to health. Therefore, people should not have fear or doubts about using the infrared thermometer to take the temperature in the head when entering work, commerce, or service centers, he said. The doctor specialized in Occupational and Environmental Medicine of the IMSS in this entity, reported that taking the temperature with an infrared thermometer is one of the most widely used methods to detect if a person has a fever, one of the main symptoms of Covid-19 because it allows to detect the high temperature and probably who are carriers of the virus. High fever is measured from 37.5 degrees, so a lower number should not worry people. In addition, currently, several businesses are already measuring the temperature in the hands or arms. Pulido Flores explained that the body emits heat radiation and thermometers have an infrared light sensor that detects, measures, and converts it into estimated body temperature data. “It is a safe team, allow the temperature to be taken, it is part of the security protocol, with which the establishments can guarantee that there are no people who have a fever, and are asymptomatic in the place”, he emphasized. Finally, he recalled that all the hygiene measures that have been widely disseminated must be continued, such as the use of face masks and keeping a healthy distance to avoid the spread of SARS-CoV-2.. <

Oral health care in children EL CUIDADO DE LA SALUD BUCAL EN LOS NIÑOS There is no waiting for a dental problem, in oral health the best is prevention.
By | Por Beatriz Flores / Reynosa, Tam.
DRA. PAMELA CASTELLANOS. Pediatric Dentist Odontopediatra.

A visit to the dentist is essential to maintain good oral health, and in the case of children it is no exception, as some do not use the proper brushing technique, eat excessively sweets, or do not take proper care of their teeth, especially if they are not supervised by their parents. The pediatric dentist, Pamela Castellanos, stressed the importance of going to the office regularly on a preventive basis and not doing it only when a problem has already arisen. “It is common for people to go to the dentist when they already have pain or inflammation, but it is advisable to go at least twice a year to take care of their oral health”, said the specialist. She added that, although the Dental Association of the United States recommends going to a consultation every six months, this will depend on the diet of each person, the risk of cavities, and dental hygiene. “When you don’t take your child regularly to the pediatric dentist, traces of bacteria remain on her teeth, tongue, and gums, favoring the formation of tartar and in some cases, stains; This can be aggravated until ending in oral disease or tooth loss”, she explained. Similarly, it is necessary to prevent the appearance of cavities, gingivitis, and other diseases, so detecting them at an early stage will make treatment much easier. The specialist certified by the Mexican Council of Pediatric Dentistry, also said that, during the review, it will be evaluated whether the little one is performing good oral hygiene, or conversely, needs the parents to maintain it. “If so, you will be instructed in more effective brushing techniques, as well as accessories for your care routine; professional cleanings are an option to keep teeth and gums healthy”, she said. Something that should never be done, despite the fact that it is a common practice in patients, is to start a dental treatment and abandon it, which delays its completion and can produce negative results, so it is recommended to carry them to term. “Remember that prevention is the best treatment”, concluded Castellanos.<

Beware of laxative abuse CUIDADO CON EL ABUSO DE LAXANTES DISEASES
By | Por Redacción | Reynosa, Tam.
Laxatives are drugs that cause an increase in bowel rhythm and thus a greater frequency of bowel movements. And it is that derived from the confinement due to the health emergency due to Covid-19, it has caused people to reduce the practice of physical exercise, it is noted that this can lead to symptoms of constipation and thus resort to the prolonged use of laxatives, without prescription medication. Dr. Francisco Emanuel Díaz Cisneros said that the body’s response to lack of fiber consumption, lack of physical activity, or excessive intake of other products is constipation. He explained that regularly, to address this symptom, laxatives are quickly resorted to, which are drugs that cause an increase in bowel rhythm and thus a greater frequency of bowel movements. The problem, commented on the director of the Family Medicine Unit (UMF) No. 40 in Reynosa, is that they can cause dependence and when used constantly, in the long term, they stop working and cause the intestine to become loose. He added that taking laxatives has several drawbacks, as they cause diarrhea or sudden bowel movements that are very annoying and painful, in addition to the fact that their abuse paradoxically produces constipation. In this sense, he warned that the regular use of any laxative can lead to chronic constipation, since they irreversibly damage the nerve endings of the large intestine, altering the functioning of the colon. Derived from the above, he recommended combating constipation naturally and safely with an adequate diet, with the help of foods such as whole grains, vegetables, and legumes, fresh fruits, nuts, drink plenty of water throughout the day, in addition to avoiding refined flours, pasta, milk and its derivatives, rice, and chocolate. He also suggested chewing food well, getting moderate daily physical exercise, and never delaying the urge to defecate. Finally, he emphasized the importance of not using any laxatives, without first consulting with his family doctor, and not taking laxatives to lose weight, since their abuse can cause a problem that can be alleviated simply, become chronic and generate greater consequences for health.<

Droplets remain in the air for hours GOTÍCULAS PERMANECEN EN EL AIRE POR HORAS By | Por José Luis Montemayor | Reynosa, Tam.
Not only with sneezes do droplets that remain in the air for several hours and can spread from the Covid-19 spread: there are also when people scream, sigh, sing, hence the importance of wearing a mouthpiece all the time. The increase in cases of Coronavirus does not stop surprising and these do not stop, due to its contagion: it could have happened inside a bus, in an office, or on a trip to the supermarket. Experts affirm that the scene in which these microparticles float and spread is impressive, which can be projected 1.5 to 2 meters with force or remain floating to finally reach the eyes, mouth, or nose of another person. The World Health Organization (WHO) uses the term “aerosols” to explain the dispersion of small drops of Coronavirus but says it does not agree with the time they are in the air. “When someone sneezes or coughs, they can scatter large droplets, but the droplets don’t hang in the air for long, they just drop”. The largest droplets fall rapidly, while the smallest droplets fall more slowly. “We are aware of the existence of environmental contamination by MERS-CoV since RNA from the virus has been found in air filtration systems (but not the live virus). However, when it comes to the new Coronavirus, we still have to analyze the data and understand how transmission has been evaluated”. The New York Times published a note a few weeks ago stating that the Covid-19 can be suspended in the air for several hours, so ventilation is recommended in rooms, not only in houses but also in restaurants, churches, and plants meat processing. Linsey Marr, an aerosol expert at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, agreed with 200 experts that the air filtration system in public and private buildings should be studied. In closed spaces the recommendation is to open the windows and doors as much as possible, in case of attending an event with more than 10 people, the healthy distance is recommended, use masks, in addition to constant hand washing. <

< Agosto 2020 | FRONTERA DOCTORS

Mario Lopez performs dengue fumigation in Matamoros MARIO LÓPEZ REALIZA FUMIGACIÓN EN MATAMOROS PARA DENGUE By | Por Redacción | Matamoros, Tam.
Mayor Mario Alberto Lopez Hernandez on his account began to fumigate the colonies and ejidos of Matamoros, given the risk posed by the denguetransmitting mosquito. Interviewed by representatives of different media, he explained that the job of spraying the city corresponds to the Government of Tamaulipas and the Third Sanitary Jurisdiction, however, he said, we are going to join forces to meet this demand made by people of Matamoros. Lopez Hernández commented that he is aware that the trucks and sprinkler machines of the Third Sanitary Jurisdiction are stopped, in addition to the fact that they do not have supplies for fumigation, nor gasoline to move the units. “For this reason we make a call for integration, to join forces to meet this need that citizens are requesting because on the one hand we bring up the issue of the Covid-19 pandemic and now we have the risk of the dengue-transmitting mosquito”, he said. The municipal president mentioned that to give a prompt response to the situation, this same day the Mayor of the Matamoros City Council will seek the best budgets for the hiring of that plane that fumigates all areas of the city. Lopez Hernandez stated that his government initiated fumigation actions to kill the dengue-transmitting mosquito “we started in the town of La Capilla and continued in the ejido 20 de Noviembre”. “I ask the people of Matamoros to have patience and trust in me; that we are working on several fronts to solve this situation”, he added. The mayor also asked the people of Matamoros to help clean up their homes to put an end to the breeding grounds of the Aedes Aegypti, which breed in clean rainwater, which concentrates on old tires, pots, and even a container card. “This is the mosquito that transmits dengue fever and citizens must check their homes and help prevent the proliferation of this mosquito that causes severe damage to health”, he said.<

Ebola still appears EL ÉBOLA AÚN APARECE By | Por Darinka Guzmán / Monterrey, N. L.
The government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) declared a new Ebola outbreak in Mbandaka, Ecuador province, on June 1, while the epidemic of the disease continues in the northeast of the country. Ebola virus disease (EVE) is a serious, often fatal disease in humans. The virus was first detected in 1976 in two simultaneous outbreaks in Nzara (now South Sudan) and Yambuku (the Democratic Republic of the Congo). The village where the second of these occurred is located near the Ebola River, which gives the virus its name. The virus is introduced into the human population through close contact with organs, blood, secretions, or other bodily fluids of infected animals, chimpanzees, gorillas, fruit bats, monkeys, antelopes, and porcupines that have been found dead or diseased in the jungle. Subsequently, the virus is spread in the community through person-to-person transmission, by direct contact with organs, blood, secretions, or other bodily fluids of infected persons, or by indirect contact with materials contaminated by such fluids. The incubation period ranges from 2 to 21 days. People are not contagious until symptoms appear. Symptoms include sudden onset of fever, severe weakness, and muscle, headache, and throat pain, which is followed by vomiting, diarrhea, skin rashes, kidney and liver dysfunction, and, in some cases, internal and external bleeding. Laboratory results show a decrease in the number of leukocytes and platelets, as well as an increase in liver enzymes.<

Comorbidity implies the coexistence of two or more diseases in the same individual. When talking about losses due to Covid-19, other causes have added that influence that of the Wuhan virus. This means that when the fatal outcome from Coronavirus appears, it should not be self-explanatory, most likely a combination with other factors that occurred. Dr. Ruy Lopez Ridaura, director-general of the National Center for Preventive Programs and Disease Control (Cenaprece), who has participated in several daily reports from COVID, said that of all the deaths, at least one is related to comorbidity in 73 per hundred. “Of that 73 percent, 67 percent have at least one, such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity or cardiovascular in 67 percent, and this is happening in Mexico and the world”, he said. In the order of comorbidities are hypertension, diabetes, obesity, chronic kidney failure, COPD, and cardiovascular disease. “The proportion of the frequency was lower and, not having comorbidity, they recovered faster; these are data come from the epidemiological study, the questions are sometimes not

known, but it also influences being older than 60 years of being a pregnant woman”, he explained. In recent deaths, only 14 percent did not have a risk factor, however, if they had one of these it increased to 28, with two to 26 and with three to 32 percent. In an investigation by the New England of Medicine, an editorial addressed that metabolic diseases influence the increase in deaths from Coronavirus. Obesity is one of the main risk factors for these diseases, it is more common to have various factors such as cancer or overweight in obese patients, compared to healthy people. “These problems are not isolated, to understand that many are not individually determinant. “Sometimes they are habits that people decide or are promoted by social determinants, where the food environment that promotes poor quality diets is included, and health care also influences, as social contexts such as poverty, indigenous, that promote having few possibilities of having a healthy life”, he expressed. Mexicans die, according to INEGI statistics, according to death certificates is due to heart disease (21%), diabetes (14%), malignant tumors (12%), liver disease (12%), assaults (5%), cerebrovascular diseases (5%), accidents (5%), pneumonia or influenza (4%), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (3%) and kidney failure (2%). Firstly, there are heart diseases and this refers to heart attacks, heart failure, and other disorders. “The worrying thing is that in Mexico 73 percent of adults are obese and overweight, 25 hypertension, and 14 diabetes. These problems are causing mortality, sometimes prematurely: people with diabetes are estimated to die 10 years earlier than those without. But as you know diabetes is the leading cause of amputations, blindness, chronic kidney failure requiring dialysis, and that impact on the quality of life of individuals”. Dr. Hugo Lopez-Gatell, at a conference, undersecretary of Prevention and Health Promotion, chaired the press conference, added that smoking must be added to the first three comorbidities because it causes multiple damages to the body health system and occupies a 9.2 percent in people who have lost their lives. He noted that it can cause damage to the heart and blood vessels (cardiovascular system), increasing the risk of heart disease and stroke. Smoking is a major cause of coronary heart disease, which can lead to a heart attack. To a lesser extent, but just as important there are other diseases such as Asthma (2.5%) and HIV or AIDS (0.5%) Lopez Ridaura added that excessive consumption of sugars influences people’s deaths, as a factor of comorbidity. “In a study by the National Institute of Public Health, it was found that up to 7 percent of total annual deaths have to do with the consumption of sugary drinks because they increase the risk of obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular problems”, he said, so that the labeling of products will soon be changed to prevent the population. Hence the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle, although the population is in mandatory isolation, you can exercise with due precautions such as hand washing and wearing a face mask. It is proven that going for a walk regularly helps to lower the stress level caused by the pandemic, as well as brings oxygen to the lungs, which guarantees better health for people. < FRONTERA DOCTORS | Agosto 2020

TB: It looks like Covid-19 but it isn’t TB: SE PARECE AL COVID-19 PERO NO ES By | Por Jaime Jiménez | Reynosa, Tam.
If you have a dry cough, fever, and fatigue, you might think you are positive for Covid-19, but tuberculosis (TB) is characterized by shortness of breath and attacks mainly the lungs. According to the National Institute of Public Health (INSP), TB is considered the deadliest infectious disease in the world, after the Coronavirus. The magnitude of this disease, in 2018 more than 1,800 Mexicans died of Tuberculosis (TB) and its consequences: 90 percent of these deaths were due to pulmonary TB. “Covid-19 is showing how vulnerable people with lung diseases and weakened immune systems can be”, explained the Director-General of the World Health Organization, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. The world is committed to ending TB by 2030. Millions of people need preventive treatment to stop the onset of the disease, avoid suffering, and save lives. This disease is transmitted from person to person when a person coughs, sneezes or spits, and the tubercle bacilli are expelled into the air. It is enough for a person to inhale a few bacilli to become infected, although they may or may not develop the disease. This is known as latent tuberculosis. According to information from the World Health Organization (WHO), a quarter of the world population has latent tuberculosis, without symptoms or being contagious, these people have a 10% risk of becoming ill with active tuberculosis throughout their life. TB presents an active lung involvement include coughing up phlegm (sometimes bloody), chest pain, weight loss, fever, weakness and night sweats; During the onset of the disease, these symptoms can be very mild. TB patients should take the precautions recommended by health authorities to protect themselves from Covid-19 and continue their treatment according to the recommendations of their doctor.<

They manage to stop cancer growth LOGRAN DETENER CRECIMIENTO DE CÁNCER By | Por Karla Aponte / Monterrey, N. L.
Researchers at the Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans discovered a gene that can slow the spread of cancer rapidly in the human body. According to reports from the journal “Scientific Reports” in one experiment two genes were analyzed, one was that of triple-negative breast cancer, known to be one of the most aggressive and easy to spread. This same one has an extremely low recovery and survival rate and the other called TRAF3IP2 demonstrated to effectively stop cancer at the time of “turning it off” giving it the use of fighting it, it was also shown that the already existing tumors were minimized and could stop completely cancer and prevent possible spread. The gene had already been discovered for its malignant causes, since being active increases the growth of tumors and the spread of cancer in the body. Globally, breast cancer has been a sensitive topic since its discovery and in Mexico until October 2019, the cumulative rate of deaths of women from breast cancer was 11,252 total cases. This type of discovery can prevent the death of millions of people in the world, however, the treatment remains subject to the regulations of the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) which is in charge of approving or modifying the procedure so that it can be achieved effectively in humans since it was carried out in animals such as mice that are constantly used for this type of research.<

In the quest to cope with the Coronavirus, there have been talks about substances that claim to cure it, so far there is no scientific evidence to prove it, such as the case of chlorine dioxide, also known as a miracle mineral solution. It is acquired mainly through social networks, where it is offered in the form of drops. This is a yellow or reddish-yellow gas that is used as a bleach in papermaking and in the water treatment process that when in contact with it, reacts to form chlorite ions. The Federal Commission for Protection Against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) and the Ministry of Health, of Mexico, warned about its use and reported that when ingested it can cause irritation of the mouth, esophagus, and stomach; nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea; in addition to cardiovascular and kidney disorders. Similarly, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) warned about its use, since its effectiveness as a prevention or cure method has not been proven. “For some time, this substance has been marketed through social networks and previously, it was used by other people as a measure against diabetes, malaria, asthma, and even cancer, with no evidence of its benefit,” they reported. The sale of this product as medicine is illegal and also represents a risk against health, since it is mainly used as an industrial disinfectant. Given this, the authorities recommend immediately stopping its use if someone is ingesting it, and stick to the instructions of health professionals in the presence of any disease.<

The ‘new normal’ in the maquila LA ‘NUEVA NORMALIDAD’ EN LA MAQUILA EPIDEMIC

DRA. ELIZABETH HERNÁNDEZ ROCHA. Occupational medicine Medicina Laboral Universidad Valle de México.

Since the Wuhan pandemic arrived in the Americas, society has had to undergo a revolutionary transformation to try to live a life as close as possible to what it was before the Coronavirus. And without a doubt one of the engines that sustain economies are factories. A considerable part of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) depends on them and in order to continue standing they have had to adapt to the guidelines established by the new normality. “There are four guiding principles: privilege health and life, solidarity and nondiscrimination, moral economy, and productive efficiency and shared responsibility. In Mexico they were published in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF)”, said Elizabeth Hernandez Rocha, who works in the area of occupational medicine in the maquiladora industry. The doctor from the Universidad Valle de México (UVM) stressed the importance of taking medical recommendations not only at home or on public roads, but also in jobs. On how the appearance of Covid-19 has influenced the maquiladora industry, the interviewee said that it has been greatly affected, not only in the matter of production but also in the personnel who work in the company, since employees are seen forced to stay at home for health reasons and this obviously affects their family finances. Hernandez Rocha mentioned that the implementation of measures guarantees a healthy distance, the protection of personnel in work areas, and common areas such as coffee shops and bathrooms, in addition to the use of mouth covers during the working day and facial protectors to avoid possible contagion. “It has also had to have special transportation for company employees, to decrease the use of public transportation”, she explained. She pointed out that the work that the health sector has performed in this situation cannot be underestimated, this includes from hospital and work center cleaning personnel, nurses, stretcher-bearers, technicians, chemists, doctors, etc. “Regarding the protocol that must be followed when infections occur, the main and most important thing is that the staff know that they should stay home if they present any type of cough, fever, general malaise, feeling of shortness of breath or in the event that a family member presents such symptoms”, she indicated. And she said that when the employee is detected as a suspect, they are provided with medical attention and are guided on how to request a permit by Covid-19 through Social Security..<

He was also a great informal leader, who moved people, who supported everyone. I remember that he helped us get a Red Cross ambulance in an emergency. We always owe him a lot of things”. He fought to be recognized as a family doctor because he saw a group of colleagues, he went to court until justice was done, is what is admired of him, she said. Then Dr. Ambrosio Nanco Ortiz, SNTSS general secretary of the clinic, gave a few words to say goodbye to his friend Rito. “He was a family member, a brother of the IMSS of 33, the time I met him, he was a man who filled us with joy at many times, where we laughed, laughed out loud, enjoyed his funny comments, and we are going to miss him, that special and helpful character”, he said. He pointed out that he owes Dr. Rito his job because he convinced him himself when he had resigned from his position. “I want you to go, to be there, he said; and thanks to his insistence I am here. I would like to say many things for him, but everyone knows that his memory will be in his heart forever”, he express. After this, they named on the microphone “doctor Rito Zambrano Navarrete”, to answer all “present!” to hear the sound of repeated sirens. A mariachi then sang the song “Amigo” by the Brazilian Roberto Carlos, who describes it as it was: “I remember that together we had very hard moments / and you did not change no matter how strong the winds were / your heart is an open house / you are the most true in uncertain times”. To f inish the musicians sang “Eternal Love”, “I will miss you”, “La Barca” and “Las Golondrinas”. RIP. <
QEPD. <

New migraine medication is approved
SE APRUEBA NUEVO MEDICAMENTO PARA LA MIGRAÑA By | Por Luis Adolfo Gumeta | Reynosa, Tam.
It begins with a pain in the eyes, the view becomes blurred, as if watching a television without a signal, a pressure is felt that gradually rises behind the corneas, and the head seems to explode, there are discomforts with the light, the noises are very irritable to the point that even breathing is torture. The FDA (Food and Drug Administration), an American agency responsible for regulating food and medicine among others, approved a new drug to combat migraines, a new treatment that is a great help for those who suffer from this condition. The medicine has a very peculiar operation, helps to avoid the pain caused by this condition, the way it helps is by its composition of a monoclonal antibody, which is responsible for blocking the activation of discomfort. The monoclonal antibody is a protein that, by binding to some target, does not allow its action to be performed, thereby blocking the binding of pain receptors in the body. That is why the approval of this new drug is a great step forward to combat the painful effects of migraine. The new drug is administered intravenously and is the first migraine treatment given in this way; This is possible thanks to the results obtained in two clinical studies, which include Promise-1 (in which episodic migraine was studied) and Promise-2 (with a focus on chronic migraine). Based on the results of the investigations carried out by doctors, doses of 100 mg every three months are recommended, although for some patients a dose of 300 mg will be necessary; With this medicinal advance it is hoped to be able to help all those patients who need it. The newly approved drug is expected to be released to the public in April 2020.<
