hat are colon polyps? Colon polyps are protuberances that appear on the mucous that lines the interior of the colon. Normally they measure a few millimeters and can vary in shape. Polyps are the result of cellular changes which have the potential to develop maliciously into cancerous lesions. Eliminating them early is a step toward avoiding colorectal cancer. What are the symptoms? Generally, there are no symptoms associated with polyps when they are small in size. Larger polyps can suffer hemorrhage which can lead to blood in feces or anemia. How are polyps diagnosed? Currently, the best method for the detection of polyps is the colonoscopy, a study which allows the direct visualization of the colon to identify polyps. Removal of the polyps can take place during the same procedure. Other examinations may find polyps but are faced with the challenge of detecting the smaller and flat type of polyps that may be malicious nonetheless. Who must undergo a colonoscopy? All patients with the following criteria: -Older than 45 who have never undergone a colonoscopy -A family history of polyps or colorectal cancer -Anyone who has been diagnosed with polyps but has not had a colonoscopy in the last five years How are polyps treated? The vast majority of polyps can be removed during the colonoscopy. This is known as endoscopic polypectomy. Most of the times this can be accomplished at an outpatient clinic. All polyps must be analyzed under a microscope after their removal in order to characterize their malignancy. Patients who are diagnosed with polyps must undergo control colonoscopies periodically.

Pólipos del colon
¿

Giant papillary conjunctivitis
G
iant papillary conjunctivitis (GPC) is when the inside of the eyelid becomes red, swollen and irritated. People who wear contact lenses are more likely to get it. GPC can appear at any time, even after contact lenses have been used for many years. People who do not wear contact lenses can also get GPC. However, it is very rare and usually affects those with an artificial eye or stitches. What causes the GPC? The CPG can be caused by the following: • Allergy to contact lenses or the chemicals used to clean them. People with contact lenses who have asthma, allergic rhinitis or other allergies are more likely to get it. • A contact lens, an artificial eye or exposed sutures that rub with the eyelid. • Deposits of proteins or other substances in contact lenses. • Chronic eye allergies. What are the symptoms of GPC? • Feeling that you have something in your eye. • Red eyes, pain and itching.
• Swollen or drooping eyelids. • Secession in the eye, which makes blurred vision. • Feeling that the contact lens moves in the eyeball when it blinks. How is the GPC treated? You must treat the GPC immediately. Otherwise, it can cause serious damage to the eyelid and cornea. Some of the treatment options are: • Avoid wearing contact lenses for a few days to a few weeks: This gives the inside of the eye time to recover. • Limit contact lens usage time per day. • Use medications in eye drops or ointments prescribed by an ophthalmologist to decrease swelling and itching. • Change the type of contact lenses. • Avoid solutions for lenses with preservatives. Conjuntivitis papilar gigante
L
Yes, there is something more overwhelming than nightmares: night terrors, those where fear and fright accompany children while they sleep and which are difficult to forget. the dream to perfection,” she said. She added that terrors can wear out the people who have them. Muñoz Gómez said that they appear between three and seven years of age and coincide with what some authors call the “Stage of fantasy”, which refers to the fact that children do not distinguish between reality and fiction. “You can see a child believing himself to be Spiderman or his favorite character, but they can also be present in adult life,” she said.
By Beatriz Flores Does your child get up at night crying, screaming, breathing hard without being consoled? What you believe is a nightmare could be a night terror, something that although it is part of the normal development of children causes great concern among parents. According to psychologist Lorena Muñoz Gómez, it is the interruption of sleep through the appearance of unpleasant dreams that appears mostly in children.
HOW TO IDENTIFY THEM?
THEY ARE NOT EQUAL TO THE NIGHTMARES
“Who have it has it as something very vivid, as an experience, and a characteristic is that the child has movements, shows concern, can make guttural sounds and when the sleep is interrupted you have the ability to have accuracy, details and sensations on the skin,” she explained. She commented that at first, you may have problems to narrate it, but after a few minutes, he is able to do so, with a sensation similar to having been in the place or event he dreamed of. “Dreams are like a compilation of the ex-

periences and anxieties that we have during the day, the worries or repressed longings and regularly our dreams are a bit confusing, like a collage of various things and situations,” she explained. She said that it is not so common for parents to identify it as a night terror, much less to go to consultation because most of the ti-
me it is underestimated, they may think that it is simply nightmares, but it is not the same. “A regular dream lasts a few seconds and upon waking the person may not remember what she was dreaming about, but a night terror may oscillate between two and 40 minutes and although at first, she can not do it because she feels she really lived it, she can tell
The psychologist stressed that there are four aspects that must be taken into account to see if it is indeed a night terror that is being presented. The first point, she said, is the experience of images, which means that the child can describe details that he saw in his dream in an exact way, for example, what he saw, what colors, shapes, and other things were. During the night terrors the sensations that the child experiences are very important, they can get to feel cold, heat, pain, up to the environmental temperature. “The excitability is also an important indicator, if you see that a child is very restless to

sleep, moves a lot during the night or looks restless may be due to what you are dreaming, it is not just your way of sleeping,” she emphasized. The verbalizations complete the characteristics, this refers to when the child speaks alone, makes a blow or shouts. “We all handle fear differently, we do have to pay close attention and if three of these symptoms come together, it would be advisable to go to a specialist to handle it,” she said.

When the child gets up after having experienced a night terror, the parents can be confused a little by not knowing how to handle the situation or how to treat it. Above all, because there may be times when the child does not wake up completely and it takes a while to understand that he is in his bedroom, with his parents. “You have to speak to him with a soft and deliberate tone of voice, when we are asleep our conscious is also, but our unconscious is not and all the time is compiling information of the lived thing during the day and if he is having a nocturnal terror during some stage of the Very deep sleep lifting it abruptly is not appropriate and could be traumatic,” she said. The specialist emphasized that although there is not much information about it, it is considered that if they occur more than twice a week, you should pay close attention. “You can show up for something that happened to the child during the day, for example, that they have run over a puppy, a scolding at school and can be considered normal, but if you have more than twice a week you can obey a neurosis of anguish,” she said. It may be due, she said, to an event or a traumatic situation that was not restored in the child or was not attended to. “Many times we underestimate childhood thinking that they are young and do not realize what is happening, that nothing worries them, but let me tell you that it is precisely in childhood, in the first eight years when traumas are fixed that being human brings out in adolescence or in adulthood,” she revealed. When it is clear that the child has a problem, we must approach him and see if something is happening in his environment. “Sometimes the child is repressed or has no confidence with the parents, or we do not give ourselves the time to talk to him and ask him if he wants to talk about what happens to someone else, so the child will feel accompanied,” she said. She revealed that the first thing to do is visit the pediatrician to rule out the presence of any condition and once confirmed to go with a therapist. This specialist will be able to interview the parents and a projective perso-

nality test to the child, where through pictures and other activities he will show what he is living. The psychologist stressed that working with relaxation techniques is very important and very helpful, as they learn to relax. She added that the child’s trust in their parents and caregivers should also be encouraged, as well as an education in the sleep routine. “Sometimes children are sent to sleep at the point of scolding and abuse, or when parents are watching horror movies or content for adults and we must take care that all that does not happen,” she said. She recommended going back to the beginning of parenting, that is, remembering when they were babies and the care they had with them at bedtime. A clean bed, to exude noise or smells that bother them and the application of some cream, aromas or relaxing music can help them to have a good night’s sleep. She advised to carry out activities before going to bed to get them tired, a dinner free of sugars and fats and a good bath, are actions that parents can put in place to avoid night disturbances. “Something very important is to take him to bed when he is about to sleep, not take him to eight if he sleeps at 11 and reduce the time he goes to bed, a school child should do it at nine at night and students high school no later than 10 o’clock,” she said. Sentenced to parents that if the child asks for a transitional object to go to sleep, like a stuffed animal, doll or blanket must be allowed and not be abrupt with him or press him to not do it. terror Noches de

By Irma Idalia Cerda Photos: Courtesy The future is here. Not long ago there was talk that anything would be within reach of a click and today it is, because through smart devices such as cell phones, you can do an infinite number of actions, such as transferring money to the bank, making video conferences of business, transmit live and direct any public or private event and now also know our health status through a multifunctional bracelet. This is Helo LX, PLUS, the bracelet that allows you to control your vital signs 24 hours a day, sends an alert for the people you want if you have any health or personal problems. José Antonio Pérez Elías, founder and shareholder of the World Global Network company in Latin America, pointed out that this is an innovative accessory whose main objective is to monitor our health status, in addition to sending an alert signal from a wristband on an elderly person who asks for help from a relative or who is responsible for their care. “This bracelet is called Helo LX PLUS, which through an application measures all the vital signs so that people can monitor their health, either: electrocardiogram, blood pressure, quality of sleep, humor, energy, to mention some. “And mainly it has something very particular, which is a panic button because the person who has his bracelet on his wrist can have from one to five guardians, that is, other people who can be aware of the bearer of this product”, he stressed. He added that this panic button is activated when the person presses twice and sends a warning message to that guardian or guardians so that assistance arrives immediately. Pérez Elías affirmed that the company he represents is the first in sensitive technology and prevention for health and the Helo LX PLUS wristband was launched worldwide 2 years ago and more than one million units have been sold.

“The company that is in the process of development and always at the forefront of innovation and technology, discovered that everything goes through genetic DNA to your body, then the company partnered with DNA laboratories called Xfinity Lab. “This was recently presented in Singapore and through a hype that the company gives you the possibility to buy through a virtual store send that hyssop to the laboratory and they make a genetic study of all your nutritional needs, your health, of your exercise, etcetera. “Based on this study, the laboratory generates a nutritional plan which measures with the bracelet and with an application,” he said.
the drop of blood from your fingers. “It is a great opportunity and solution for thousands of people suffering from diabetes in Mexico and in the world. “He noted that the bracelet reaches a price of about $ 410 including shipping in Mexico and the Helo Extense is $ 528.
“But if you think about it, usually people with diabetes spend around two thousand or three thousand pesos on studies and medications. “Using this technology brings us immediate benefits at an economic level, but above all, it improves the quality of our health,” said José Antonio Pérez Elías.
HELO EXTENSE
And since diabetes is the disease that affects most of the population, a non-invasive product was designed to measure the levels of glucose called Helo Extense. “Then we have a very innovative product called Helo Extense, which is the first non-invasive device for diabetes that arose because the creator of all this technology is diabetic and decided to develop this type of glucometer that does not puncture the fingers”, he said. He indicated that Helo Extense works in the same way as the Helo LX PLUS bracelet, which measures glucose levels without needing to take

PROTEINS
When and how to
consume them They are part of the ‘fitness’ fashion, which has to do with a healthy lifestyle consisting of balanced diet and exercise. By José Manuel Meza Those who begin to enter the healthy environment are very interested in the things they can eat to improve their performance, look better and talk a lot about protein consumption to achieve those goals. These are macro-molecules formed by linear chains of amino acids. According to Ana Laura Noriega Cortés, a nutritionist from the Universidad del Valle de México (UVM) and a Cross-Fit trainer, proteins can be found naturally in some foods and also artificially. “This is the case of meats, eggs, dairy products, yogurt, vegetables such as legumes, lentils, beans and talking about protein powder, it is a supplement that can substitute the food itself. “Many times we do not have time to eat chicken, fish, meat every three hours, so it is much more practical to take it in powder,” she said. The interviewee said that in the fitness field it is recommended to ingest proteins after training since that is when the body needs the nutrients to be able to rebuild the muscle fibers that were worn during physical activity. “They are important because they have many functions. One of them is precisely the reconstruction of the tissues and the repair of muscles, so their intake is very necessary”, added the specialist. BUT DO NOT OVER TAKE THEM
Noriega Cortés said that there is a specific protein recommendation for each person, but it can vary depending on the age, the health condition, if it is male, female, if pregnant, if it is an athlete. The goals change, but it is usually recommended that they be 10 to 15 percent of the diet. “The daily intake is divided into three: carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids. The first ones are recommended from 50 to 55 percent, lipids from 20 to 30 and proteins from 10 to
16
15 percent. “Carbohydrates are another macro-nutrient and the main source of energy in our body. They can be found in cereals, in fruits, in vegetables, in glucose. Everything that is sugar. “And the micro-nutrients are vitamins and minerals. They are found in carbohydrates, such as fruits, in proteins, as in meat. They also provide vitamins and minerals”, she explained. A GOOD COMBINATION
The nutritionist and trainer said that it is important to accompany the exercise with a healthy diet, that is why protein intake is necessary during training, because if the necessary amount is not consumed, instead of
benefiting it may affect. ¿What happens when you do not have enough protein? “It could be that the person suffers from weakness, and a lack of will. There can be a decompensation because it is an essential nutrient and everyone should consume protein, either animal, vegetable or also from some legumes or plants and powder”, she said. Noriega Cortés also considered relevant to say that there are many myths about these macro-molecules. “There are people who believe that they are going to take them and magically they are going to grow their muscles and there are those who believe that they will hurt their kidneys,
but no, if they are consumed according to the requirements it will not cause any bad effect. “Protein powder is simply a supplement. There are people who consider it mandatory to take them because they are exercising. Many times they are expensive and not everyone has the resources to buy them, but it is not 100 percent necessary to have them in powder form and they can be consumed from the same foods”, she explained. Anyway, the coach recommended that whether someone seeks to gain weight, gain muscle mass or decrease the percentage of fat, you should go with a nutritionist or specialist who can give advice and a personalized plan.

Go to the dentist in Matamoros at
Dental Paz Five minutes from the international bridge ‘Los Tomates’, this clinic located in the Treviño Zapata neighborhood, serves patients from Mexico and the United States. Its quality and service distinguish it. By José Manuel Meza Matamoros, Tam. For a good smile, there is no other way but to have healthy and strong teeth, which transmits greater confidence and security. And, according to Carmina Paz Bonilla, a dental surgeon out of the University of Matamoros, oral health literally says a lot about a person’s image. But it also affects your physical wellbeing, that’s why it’s important to take care of it and the best way to do it is by going periodically to the dentist. That will help detect any problem or correct it. The specialist -with more than 10 years of experience- mentioned that thanks to the technology available today, a better dental treatment can be performed, depending on what is required. “We handle what are resin fillings, color fillings, cleanings, extractions and whitening. The latter can be at home or in the office,” said Dr. Carmina. In her clinic, known as Dental Paz, located in the Treviño Zapata neighborhood of Matamoros, very close to Brownsville, Texas, she also performs periapical radiographs, total and partial plates; crowns, fixed bridges, porcelain, zirconia and metal. BEYOND THE TEETH
The dentist believes that it is not only about preventing, restoring or replacing the mouthpieces but helping the patient feel really comfortable and look good. The advantage is that, if the diagnosis indicates, you can receive multidisciplinary assistance without having to move from one clinic to another. “We handle what is a smile design, which has to do with resin and zirconia veneers. We also have specialists in charge of certain branches that we handle in dentistry, such as pediatric dentistry, surgery, endo-

dontics and orthodontics,” said the doctor with professional ID 7325863. The difference between the other clinics is that all the services are provided and the people receive comprehensive treatment. Another of the greatest benefits of Dental Paz is its closeness to the United States, since entering the international bridge ‘Los Tomates’ patients should only take the elevated bridge, go down and access directly to the address. They can also schedule their appointments at 01 (868) 2123887 and receive instructions from any of their representatives on how to get there more easily and about their promotions. “The opening hours are Monday through Friday from 09:00 to 19:00 and Saturdays from 9:00 to 15:00. Special appointments are made in case a local or foreign patient has a special requirement regarding their transfer. “We have the email, with a Facebook page called Dental Paz and we can also answer your questions via telephone,” said Dr. Carmina. SECURITY AND HYGIENE
One of the biggest reasons why this practice is very popular with the public both in northern Mexico and in the southern United States is due to the cleaning processes it has. All dental instruments are subjected to a rigorous sterilization method and specialists wear new clothing and gloves to perform each of the procedures. In addition to the good treatment and the personalized explanation that patients receive at Dental Paz, they can find very accessible prices and high quality for the maintenance, restoration and renewal of their teeth. That is why in this place what is sought is for people to be satisfied and also have a good experience. Octubre 2018 | FRONTERA DOCTORS HEALTH MAGAZINE

Stem cells,
available to everyone “Improve your quality of life today”, is the phrase with which the Genesis Medical Center promotes the use of stem cells through autohemotherapy. By Pamela Escobar
MEDICAL RECORD
Although many people distrust such treatments, they do work and are not palliative, nor is it an alternative therapy, but medically verifiable, said the specialist in regenerative medicine, Dr. José Manuel Garza García. “Stem cells are pluripotent cells that have the function of becoming and performing the function of any other cell. We all have them in our body, but through autohemotherapy, they are activated,” he explained. Garza García expressed that there is three ways for obtaining this cell: blood, which is the most common; the bone marrow, which is the bone and adipose tissue and the abdominal fat that is extracted around the bellybottom. “Depending on the extraction method that is what we are going to do, assuming that we want to take care of some problem in the blood, from there we will extract the cells,” he explained.
DR. JOSÉ MANUEL GARZA GARCÍA 4Regenerative medicine specialty. 4Universidad Mexico Americana del Norte. 4General Medicine Advice.
THE AUTOHEMOTHERAPY
In the body there are irreversible damages with the passage of time, daily the organism loses the function of restoring or regenerating tissues and that is where the autohemotherapy is performed that helps the body to feel functional. The specialist commented that autohemotherapy is a procedure by means of which the patient’s cells are extracted to later be activated and applied again in the bloodstream. “In a blood sample, different types of cells are going to be obtained. We are going to focus on the mothers, who curiously are ‘deactivated’ in a matter of speak, and through the laboratory, we activate and multiply them and then we introduce them back into the
24
body intravenously,” he explained. He said this is called autohemotherapy because it works with the patient’s own blood since the stem cells have to recognize the same body. “You can not use blood from one subject in another, even if healthy, because the body will destroy them by not recognizing them, then the patient’s blood is removed,
leaving a component in it when it returns to the interior of the streaming blood the body identifies it and does not destroy it,” he said. He added that in addition to autohemotherapy, the cells can be obtained from the bone marrow and although there are few cases, it is used in patients who have musculoskeletal problems. “For example, it is used in some pa-
tient with a knee injured by exercise, work or overweight. We took that patient’s bone marrow, that is, bone to treat bone and improve his health,” he explained. He added that in the case of treatment with adipose tissue, this is the strongest, but it is also the best since when they are extracted it is done by a procedure similar to a mini-liposuction and they obtain an average of 60 milliliters of abdominal fat. “This type of cells are the most” tender “to call them in some way, at rest, they are the original since the umbilical cord was attach to it; they are the strongest because they have never been in contact with blood, and with diseases contracted throughout life in the bloodstream. These cells are there since the patient was in his mother’s womb,” he said. FOR ANY DISEASE
The use of stem cells can be for any type of ailment, in the case of the most common ones based on autohemotherapy, they are hypertension and diabetes. In the case of the latter, those who suffer from it have pancreatic failures and lower production or stop
Octubre 2018 | FRONTERA DOCTORS HEALTH MAGAZINE
secreting insulin. “What the stem cells do is go directly to the liver and the pancreas to stimulate them, in the case of the pancreas for the production of insulin and take it to the liver and put that insulin to work correctly,” the doctor said. He added that sometimes the liver has slowness or layers of fat and the little insulin that patients produce is not enough to have the correct function, that is when the stem cells go to work in those organs. “After the autohemotherapy treatments, the glucose will start to fall, so much so that sometimes they take away the medication they are taking because, in the end, they do not require it anymore; the patient loses weight and is doing quite well,” he said. He added that he has patients who know or not, that they are hypertensive and at the end of the treatment they leave the medication in case of consuming any drug. In women, it is common to counteract hormone decontrol, it also treats patients with Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, arthritis, lupus, most of which are rheumatoid. All of them through autohemotherapy. ACCESSIBILITY
Garza Garcia stressed that stem cell therapy is currently very affordable in Reynosa. Without comparing with other centers that perform this type of treatment in cities such as Chicago, Miami, Houston or Chihuahua. “I never promise anything, because they are chronic degenerative diseases that are already diagnosed by other specialists and the patient comes resigned that cannot be cured and I can not offer a cure, however, there are considerable improvements and we have reversed diagnoses of for life,” he said. He added that the complexity of these procedures is to obtain the confidence of other specialties on the benefits of autohemotherapy, but there are some doctors who even use it at the Genesis Medical Center. “Stem cells came to light many years ago, they just were not so specialized in how to activate them, they put them on, but they did not direct them one hundred percent for that reason the lack of specific functioning,” he explained. He also said that the advance in technology has allowed even in the advertising of creams to appear as content stem cells, either for the face or the body. “They are everywhere, that is, they already know that they do work and it is not something palliative, it is real, it is not an alternative therapy, is medically reliable and proven,” he said. ADVANTAGES AND BENEFITS
The doctor said that anyone can use this procedure without suffering from any disease because it is not for the exclusive use of the sick, but to improve the quality of life of people. “We do not know how much life we have left, but what remains for me I want to
BENEFITS 4Improvement in the quality of life, both physical and emotional. 4Stability. 4Report on treated disease. 4Hydrated skin, less gray hair and wrinkles. 4Decrease in the consumption of medications. 4Greater vitality and energy. 4Supports the increase of muscle mass. 4Regulates immune and hormonal functions.
live one hundred percent. Assuming that someone healthy uses it, your body will eliminate the toxins in a better way, the organs begin to function at one hundred percent; There will be a point where patients feel very well and even mental function improves.” He commented that currently processed foods and sedentary life makes stem cells to not work correctly, which also serve to improve the skin, the way of walking and even stop using the cane. “In other parts of the world they are known as anti-aging therapies, not because it removes wrinkles, (which they do) and it does not

He explained that in the past it was believed that the use of stem cells was not for everyone, but nowadays anyone is a candidate for use, the only one that is not recommended for is that who has very low platelets. He said it would be a problem to draw blood, and more to return it to the bloodstream. Other than that, he recommended it for anyone and even children, regardless of whether they have any illness. “Mother nature is very wise and for some reason she put this type of cells in our body as if it was a pharmacy that we have

and we have access to them and it is personal, to think that sometimes you can not buy a medication because it is very expensive, but this can regenerate, improve and even take away the suffering or the suffering that causes the disease. It is a very good therapy in which not everyone believes that it can work, but that is all, lack of confidence, it must be experienced firsthand to know its benign effect,” he said.

A safe city is the second point of its go-

She added that in order to develop human capabilities to the maximum, it is necessary that the environment where we live has peace and tranquility so that hope in the future culminates in realized and free citizens. “The Reynosa authorities have been aware that the security crisis is a collective responsibility of the three levels of government and civil society, however, on the issue of security, the municipality has an important part to contribute”, he said. For this reason, activities of prevention and financial support will be carried out to the requirements that the model of the Single Command demands for the fulfillment of its responsibilities and the collaboration with
the State and the Federation that is required. “The strategy we apply to have a free and peaceful city, is concentrated in 3 major points: crime prevention, social reintegration and reconstruction of the social fabric,” said the mayor. Finally, she said that young people are a fundamental part of the change of society, so their actions will be decisive to achieve the peace and tranquility that Reynosa needs and deserves. “That the young people, being at the crossroads of their lives and having to choose between a book and a weapon, have the strength to choose the first, because we have been able to offer them opportunities, teach them the values and cultivate a faith in them. God that makes them, without hesitation, choose the path of peace”, she said.

Talavera, Mexican cultural heritage on the border of Nuevo Progreso
A wide variety of ceramic decoration can be obtained at the Shaddai Shopping Center, a few steps from the international bridge. By José Manuel Meza Nuevo Progreso, Tam. Until a few years ago, the talavera poblana was only possible to acquire it in the center of Mexico or in department stores, but now it is available for the Winter Texans who visit the northeast region of Mexico. Not only has a decorative purpose, but also some items serve to cook. They are lead-free and can be put in the microwave oven. “The talavera is one of the most beautiful crafts. It is an art made 100 percent by hand. They are not a stamp, or just to hang them on the wall, because they are also made to give us a service. “We have plates, cups, cigar boxes, trays, fruit bowls, bells, spoon, creme, sugar, candy, tequila, coffee, glasses, salt, jars, vases, and crosses, among others,” said Gustavo Solis Salinas, employee of the store. THEY DO NOT HAVE TO GO SO FAR
He said that the people who most seek this type of products are tourists from the United States and Canada. “Here at the Shaddai Shopping Center we also sell Talavera de Dolores, Hidalgo, but the one in Puebla is the most requested. “These are items that have been elaborated for a long time and therefore are well appreciated by visitors,” he said. Solís Salinas expressed that for this shopping center it is a satisfaction to be able to bring to the public a talavera with export quality a few steps from across the border. “We can say that they are exclusive products in Nuevo Progreso because nobody sells them here more than we do,” he said. And he highlighted the advantage that tourists can get on the border almost for the same value as in their place of origin. “It’s 100% talavera and cooked at 360 degrees. You can cook and nothing happens to the painting. We have prices from five dollars. “And they are always very nice items to take as a gift. Although many people buy it to use at home, “he said. ART STAMP IN CERAMIC
It is known that this talavera has reached many places in the United States, Canada, and Europe. Even the city of New York has its own collection.
38
“There are many people who visit us every year with the sole purpose of buying from us these crafts, which in other countries are worth more than double,” he said. The Mexican talavera is a product free of toxic substances that have no problem to be introduced to the American Union, said the representative of the Shaddai Shopping Center. People who are interested in this type of pottery can al-
so visit the store’s Facebook profile online. Solís Salinas invited the Winter Texans, the Hispanic tourists and the inhabitants of northern Mexico to visit the great variety of talavera items. “We have a wide range also of other products such as wines, medicines, and what they can not find we get them for them,” he assured.
NUEVO PROGRESO - Magazine | October 2018

The good and the bad about
caffeine
A cup of black coffee a day is ideal to stay alert and more energetic, but its abuse can cause hypertension, tachycardia and nervousness. By Beatriz Flores For many people, it is almost a ritual to have a cup of coffee every morning, shortly after waking up or when arriving at the office and when it is not done, headaches, tiredness and drowsiness appear. This is due to caffeine, a stimulant of the central nervous system that produces a state of alertness. Nutritionist Brenda Martell explained that caffeine is not only present in coffee, but also in chocolates, teas, soft drinks and some energy drinks. In addition, there is synthetic caffeine that is currently used in some medications. In these cases, said the specialist, the doctor should ask the patient about the consumption of beverages containing caffeine because by administering any medication that carries it as part of its compounds can cause an overdose. ALL EXCESSES ARE BAD
Martell recommended taking a cup of coffee a day, decaffeinated and preferably black because adding milk, sugar or substitutes provides additional calories that are not necessary for the body. “We should not take more than 150 milligrams per day, the dose of more may cause high blood pressure, hypersensitivity, tachycardia, sweating or insomnia,” he said. Very large amounts can also cause excitement, gastrointestinal problems, cardiac arrhyth-

is that it is more altered,” she said. Finally, the nutritionist asked not to be fooled by products with caffeine that are flaunted as thermogenic, ie, fat burners and offer to lose weight without any effort. “Coffee in moderate doses daily helps cleanse the liver and intestinal tract, but does not mean that a drink with coffee and other substances will make you lose weight, you have to be careful with marketing,” she said. mia and increased urine secretion. She asserted that there are people who have made coffee part of their daily life but do not do it in moderation. “Coffee helps keep us awake, in concentration, but the brain is so used to it that when we stop drinking it can have the opposite effect,” she warned. Hypertensive people, patients with cancer, pregnant women and those who are breastfeeding should avoid the intake of caffeine. “Pregnant women should not consume coffee or tea because caffeine penetrates the placenta and can slow the growth of the baby, also during breastfeeding it must be removed because caffeine reaches breast milk and the child may have tachycardia problems”, she said. She said that children should definitely not consume caffeine of any kind, but that parents sometimes allow them

to consume it in some presentations, thinking that perhaps it is less harmful. “It is important to make this comparison because the parents say yes to the soda, but not to the coffee because it is prohibited, being that it is the same, sometimes we have a child who is very hyperactive and what we provoke with the caffeine

The inevitable
tortillas The Potosina was the first tortilleria in town and still keeps on serving a few blocks of the international bridge with its machines working day and night.
By José Manuel Meza Nuevo Progreso, Tam. It is no secret to anyone that corn tortilla is the main food of Mexicans. It emerged several hundred years ago and although many houses are still prepared “by hand” their industrialization has not diminished the flavor The origin of the tortilla goes back to the pre-Columbian period, forming part of the Mexican gastronomic culture. From the nutritional point of view, it provides the ideal nutrients for a balanced diet. In Mexico, on average, more than eight million tons of corn are produced each year. Long before this food became popular, at the beginning of the 1950, one of the first places that began selling them to foreigners coming to Mexico was La Potosina. Located on Benito Juarez Street, the business is one of the pioneers of this town on the Mexican border. “My grandfather Luis Hernández was the first to arrive at this place when everything here was pure mountain. He and his brother Juan were the ones who started to open this before tourism arrived in Nuevo Progreso”, said Mayra Lira Hernández, the person in charge. She said that prior to restaurants, stores, pharmacies and doctors’ offices there were already tortillas. “Then followed the liquor store next door, then the dentists and little by little they opened other businesses,” added the administrator. That is why this inheritance left to her by her grandfather and later by her mother, means a lot to her. “Because it’s a tradition that has gone from generation to generation. Many things can disappear, but tortillas never”, she said. OF INCALCULABLE PROPORTIONS
There have been millions of tortillas that

have left this small factory and is one of the most requested products by the ‘Winter Texans’. “We have a flow of people coming and going. Here at the store, we sell other products, but Americans prefer tortillas because they use them for chips or accompany them with their meals. “That is why I say that any possible scenario can be presented, but the tortilla is a food that can never stop being sold or eaten because it is a basic, tasty and nutritious product,” she said. Lira Hernández said she is proud that her tortillas have gone so far that people from the United States, Canada, and even Europe have told her that they have consumed them. “We are known by tourists from many parts of the world,” she said. The demand in La Potosina is so great that tourists, the inhabitants of Nuevo Progreso and also the gastronomy sector take them. She commented “mi grandfahter, who is originally from San Luis Potosi, Mexico started with one old machine, I don’t know how he made it work, but he did manage to get this business working.” “With the years he install three more machines on the top floor. It’s very hard to determine how many kilograms are made daily because we have the machines working all day long.” she said that people have told her that they can smell the tortillas from far away. “From as far as the other corner the Winter Texans get close and listen to the sound of the machines working and how the are eating worm out of the machines tortillas. At the Potosina a package that weight a little more that a kilo cost one (1) dollar or 16 pesos, which is very accesible for anyone.” she said. For its contribution to Nuevo Progreso’s grown this torilleria still one of the pillars of this town in the border of Tamaulipas and the U.S.A. October 2018 | NUEVO PROGRESO - Magazine

October 2018 | NUEVO PROGRESO - Magazine
