How to lose

weight

after 50?

After a certain age, it is much more difficult to maintain or not increase weight and sizes, here we tell you what to do to avoid it

By Hallie Levine AARP Whether you’ve been battling excess weight for what seems like an eternity - or only since your last birthday - it’s true that age can have a lot to do with the number the scale shows.

As with wrinkles on the face and varicose veins, you are simply more susceptible to gaining weight once you reach 50.

And it’s not just your imagination. It also becomes more challenging to lose those extra pounds once they settle on the hip.

“The two biggest reasons why people tend to gain weight as they get older are muscle loss and decreased activity,” explains Dr. Caroline Apovian, weight loss specialist at Boston Medical Center University. People experience a loss of muscle mass of 5 to 10 percent every decade after age 50, according to the ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine). As a result, your resting metabolic rate decreases by an average of 2 to 3 percent every decade.

And this means that you can be eating exactly the same amount as at 40 - not a bit more - and even gain weight.

Becoming more sedentary with age can also cause weight gain, especially if you start to develop arthritis or other joint problems that restrict activity.

“As we get older, we spend less time running around and physical activity decreases,” says Apovian. “But, as you get older, if you do not use your muscles, you will lose them.”

And, although these facts are instructive, there is much to be done to take control.

“You’re not doomed to failure, I’m 60 years old and have more muscle mass than when I was 30,” says Apovian with pride.

It’s true that few of us have the time or energy to follow the grueling Apovian exercise program (he gets up at 5 in the morning almost every day to swim for an hour or run six miles on his treadmill), but we can continue his advice, as well as those of other lea-

EAT A LOT OF PROTEIN

“Protein supplementation can help rebuild muscle mass, which reverses the decline of metabolism,” explains Apovian.

She recommends making sure that between 30 and 40 percent of daily calories come from protein, depending on body weight. Imagine that a lean portion of meat or fish occupies a third of your plate and you will realize the idea.

By contrast, the average person gets about 16 percent of their protein intake, according to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).

You will also develop more muscle if you distribute your protein intake evenly throughout the day. A 2017 study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that consuming the same amount of protein in all

three meals is related to more muscle strength in people 67 and older. To level your consumption, try adding an egg or yogurt to your breakfast, a glass of milk or a handful of nuts to your lunch, and reduce your protein source at dinner.

JOIN THE RESISTANCE

Although any type of exercise can help you lose weight, it is very important that you lift weights at least twice a week to increase muscle mass, which will help you lose weight. In one study, 60-plus-year-old adults who lifted weights lost more weight and less muscle mass for 18 months than those who only exercised.

“Any type of muscle development opportunity, even if it’s just working with light resistance bands or swimming in a pool, will speed up your metabolism and therefore help you burn calories,” explains Dr. Reshmi Srinath. , endocrinologist and obesity specialist at

Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City.

And keep in mind that you do not have to do much to see results. People who lifted weights just twice a week gained about two kilograms of muscle after ten weeks, according to a review published in Current Sports Medicine Reports.

Beyond strength training, if you can take your general exercise program to a slightly higher level, do it. Older adults who did high-intensity interval training, which involves short periods of high-intensity exercise, not only lost weight but also had less damage to muscle cell DNA. And this helped trigger the growth of new muscle.

SLEEP ENOUGH

“Research has consistently shown that people who are overweight or obese sleep less than those who are normal weight,” says Apovian.

“When you are deprived of sleep, your body increases the production of hormones that increase hunger, such as the stress hormone cortisol and the appetite-stimulating hormone ghrelin.”

FROM TIME TO TIME, FAST

We are not talking about debugging with juices. Rather, the research now shows that a specific type of intermittent fasting, known as fasting imitation, can trigger weight loss as well as improve your overall health. The people who followed this type of diet plan - in which they only consumed 750 to 1,000 calories five days a month, but who, the rest of the time, ate normally - lost, on average, three kilos, reduced one to two inches from the waist and both blood pressure and IGF-1 levels (a substance related to an increased cancer risk) decreased significantly, according to a University of Southern California study published last year.

How does it work?

“When you gain weight, the nerves in the hypothalamus that drive the signals from your fat cells to the rest of the brain are damaged,” explains Dr. Louis Aronne, director of the Center for Weight Management and Metabolic Clinical Research at Weill Cornell Medical College.

“As a result, the brain does not realize you’re full, so keep on signing to eat.”

But when you stop eating a lot for a day, he continues, “you are reducing the stress on the hypothalamic nerves, so you give them time to recover.” That rest day for the nerves could be especially important for the elderly, he clarifies, due to the damage that oxidative stress can cause in the weight regulation system.

As for how to start, “I tell patients that they want to try to eat only 800 calories twice a week, focusing on vegetables, proteins and healthy oils like olive oil,” he says.

To feel more satisfied for longer on days when you’re not fasting, Aronne recommends following a low-carb diet where about 30 percent of the calories come from protein and the rest from non-starchy vegetables, nuts, and beans.

Do you feel like eating bread? “I tell patients that the best time to eat these types of carbohydrates with starch is at the end of the meal, after having eaten vegetables and proteins,” he explains.

Aronne’s research shows that people who eat this way not only have lower levels of blood sugar and insulin after eating but also have a greater increase in hormones (such as GLP-1) that help keep yourself satisfied longer.

EAT CONSCIOUSLY

If you think that your weight gain may have something to do with the stress of middle age (aging parents, university enrollment accounts and managerial responsibilities at work, for example), this approach can be especially useful to have among your tools to lose weight.

Here are some tips to start: eat slowly (lower the fork between bites and chew food well), try to eat without external distractions and follow the rule of the single bite when it comes to favorite foods that fatten, such as desserts.

CONSUME MUCHA PROTEÍNA

“La suplementación proteica puede ayudar a reconstruir la masa muscular, lo que invierte el declive del metabolismo”, explica Apovian.

Ella recomienda asegurarnos de que entre el 30 y el 40 por ciento de las calorías diarias provengan de proteínas, dependiendo del peso corporal. Imagina que una porción magra de carne o pescado ocupa un tercio de tu plato y te darás cuenta de la idea.

Por el contrario, la persona promedio obtiene alrededor del 16 por ciento de su ingesta de alimentos de las proteínas, según los CDC (Centros para el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades).

También desarrollarás más músculo si distribuyes tu consumo de proteínas de manera uniforme a lo largo del día. Un estudio del 2017 publicado en el American Journal of Clinical Nutrition encontró que consumir la misma cantidad de proteína en las tres comidas está relacionado con más fuerza muscular en las personas de 67 años o más. Para nivelar tu consumo, intenta agregar un huevo o yogurt a tu desayuno, un vaso de leche o un puñado de nueces a tu almuerzo, y reducir tu fuente de proteínas en la cena.

La investigación de Aronne muestra que las personas que comen de esta manera no solo tienen niveles más bajos de azúcar en la sangre e insulina después de comer, sino que también tienen un mayor aumento en las hormonas (como el GLP-1) que ayudan a mantenerte satisfecho por más tiempo.

ÚNETE A LA RESISTENCIA

Aunque cualquier tipo de ejercicio puede ayudarte a perder peso, es muy importante que levantes pesas al menos dos veces a la semana para aumentar la masa muscular, lo que te ayudará a perder peso. En un estudio, los adultos de 60 años y pico que levantaban pesas perdieron más peso y menos masa muscular durante 18 meses que los que solo hacían ejercicio.

“Cualquier tipo de oportunidad para desarrollar músculo, incluso si solo se trata de trabajar con bandas ligeras de resistencia o nadar en una piscina, te acelerará el metabolismo y, por lo tanto, te ayudará a quemar calorías”, explica la Dra. Reshmi Srinath, endocrinóloga y especialista en obesidad del Centro Médico Mount Sinai de la ciudad de Nueva York.

Y ten en cuenta que no tienes que hacer mucho para ver resultados. Las personas que levantaron pesas apenas dos veces a la semana aumentaron cerca de dos kilos de músculo después de diez semanas, según una revisión publicada en Current Sports Medicine Reports.

Más allá del entrenamiento de fuerza, si puedes llevar tu programa de ejercicio general a un nivel un poquito más alto, hazlo. Los adultos mayores que hicieron entrenamiento de intervalos de alta intensidad, que implica períodos cortos de ejercicio de alta intensidad, no sólo perdieron peso, sino que también tuvieron menos daño en el ADN de las células musculares.

Y esto ayudó a desencadenar el crecimiento de nuevo músculo.

DUERME LO SUFICIENTE

“Las investigaciones han demostrado sistemáticamente que las personas que tienen sobrepeso o son obesas duermen menos que las que tienen un peso normal”, subraya Apovian.

“Cuando estás privado de sueño, tu cuerpo aumenta la producción de hormonas que aumentan el hambre, como la hormona del estrés cortisol y la hormona estimulante del apetito ghrelina”.

Los hombres mayores (de más de 67 años) que duermen menos de cinco horas por noche tienen casi cuatro veces más probabilidades de ser obesos que los que duermen entre siete y ocho, y las mujeres mayores tienen más del doble de probabilidades, según un estudio de Case Western Reserve University.

También es una buena idea dormir a horarios consistentes, es decir, levantarte y acostarte más o menos a la misma hora todos los días. Los hombres y las mujeres mayores que no siguen este hábito saludable agregan otro factor de riesgo de ser obesos a la mezcla, según un estudio publicado en el International Journal of Obesity.

DE VEZ EN CUANDO, AYUNA

No estamos hablando de depuraciones con jugos. Más bien, la investigación ahora muestra que un tipo específico de ayuno intermitente, conocido como imitación de ayuno, puede desencadenar la pérdida de peso, así como mejorar tu salud en general. Las personas que siguieron este tipo de plan de dieta --en el que solo consumían de 750 a 1,000 calorías cinco días al mes, pero que, el resto del tiempo, comían normalmente-- perdieron, en promedio, tres kilos, redujeron una a dos pulgadas de la cintura y tanto la presión arterial como los niveles de IGF-1 (una sustancia relacionada con un mayor riesgo de cáncer) disminuyeron significativamente, según un estudio de University of Southern California publicado el año pasado. ¿Cómo funciona?

“Como resultado, el cerebro no se da cuenta de que estás lleno, así que sigue haciéndote señas para que comas”.

Shortness of air It is a respiratory disease that can be caused by dust, lint, pet hair, grass and even dandruff. A doctor explains what to do, how to take care of it and avoid it.

By José Manuel Meza There is a condition that causes the airways to swell, causing difficulty inhaling and it is an affection on 235 million people worldwide, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

At a national level, asthma is a disease that affects 7 percent of Mexicans, according to data from the Ministry of Health (SS), while in the United States it affects around 22 million people, costing about 82 thousand millions to attend to it.

The figure includes additional medical expenses, absences from work, school and medications.

According to Dr. Jeff Razo Mancilla asthma can cause chest tightness, whistling and coughing, and talks about its causes and effects.

“We are facing a disease that usually affects people when they are children. The origin can be by physical agents such as dust, pollen, dandruff, cat hair, dogs and even rabbits. In addition to the lawn and items like stuffed animals,” he warned.

HOW IT ATTACKS

But what about asthma when the evil agent enters the body?

The doctor from the Universidad Mexico Americana del Norte (UMAN) said that it provokes a reaction and will contract the bronchus, causing the patient to enter a respiratory distress.

“And symptoms like oppression of the chest and suffocation will occur, which is what happens mainly. The treatment

On the importance of not self-medication said Razo Mancilla that it is also dangerous to administer a dose of salbutamol without requiring it because it can cause side effects, tachycardia or bronchospasm, so it is not advisable to use the device for asthma if it is not asthmatic.

Por José Manuel Meza Hay un padecimiento que provoca que las vías respiratorias se hinchen, provocando dificultades para inhalar y que afecta a 235 millones de personas en el mundo, de acuerdo con la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS).

A nivel nacional el asma es una enfermedad que afecta al 7 por ciento de los mexicanos, según datos de la Secretaría de Salud (SS), mientras que en Estados Unidos la padecen 22 millones de personas, por lo cual se erogan cada año hasta 82 mil millones de dólares para atenderla.

De acuerdo con el doctor Jeff Razo Mancilla el asma puede provocar opresión en el pecho, silbidos y tos, y habla acerca de sus causas y efectos.

“Estamos ante una enfermedad que generalmente afecta a las personas cuando son niños. El origen puede ser por agentes físicos como el polvo, el polen, la caspa, el pelo de gato, de perros y conejos incluso. Además del césped y artículos como muñecos de peluche”, advirtió.

CÓMO ATACA

Pero ¿qué pasa con el asma cuando el agente maligno entra al cuerpo?

El médico por la Universidad México Americana del Norte (UMAN) manifestó que provoca una reacción y se va a contraer el bronquio, originando que el paciente entre en una dificultad respiratoria.

“Y se van a presentar síntomas como opresión en el pecho y sofocación, que es lo que principalmente pasa. El tratamiento debe de ser establecido. Si se determina que el paciente tiene asma deberá utilizar broncodi-

latadores en aerosol”, indicó.

“Esa es una de las medidas más rápidas con la que se puede tratar el asma. La otra es cuando el paciente ha tenido crisis repetitivas y ha habido una dificultad respiratoria.

“Se puede hospitalizar o en su defecto en su propio domicilio se le darían nebulizaciones con medicamentos empleados que sustituyan a los fármacos en aerosol. En este caso estamos hablando de Sabutamol, que es lo más común que utilizamos”, especificó Razo Mancilla.

El doctor señaló que en la frontera es muy común que se comercialicen productos como ropa y peluches que pueden contener bacterias.

“Es una de las causas más comunes. Hay que tener mucho cuidado con la cuestión de la higiene, retirar la humedad que hay en las casas, el agua que se pueda formar en las paredes, la tierra y pelusa se debe quitar de antemano”, agregó.

Sin embargo, el asma no es congénito como muchas personas piensan, sino que se adquiere. De acuerdo con este médico no tiene ninguna relación hereditaria.

Sobre la pregunta de si las personas pueden sanar por completo de asma, el entrevistado

comentó que depende de cada paciente y sus tratamientos.

“Conforme pasen los años y la persona vaya madurando, la enfermedad puede continuar y presentar crisis asmáticas en plazos muy largos o no llegar a tenerlas, pero sí es recomendable que cuando alguien padezca asma cargue su broncodilatador por cualquier emergencia o situación que pueda presentarse”, recomendó.

Dijo que el no llevar el dispositivo, puede convertirse en un asunto de vida o muerte, ya que en un caso de emergencia se cierra completamente el pecho y no hay entrada de aire al organismo.

“Lo que va a pasar es que el pulmón se va a ponchar, se va a hacer chiquito, porque no se expande y en esos casos el paciente puede morir por asfixia”, reiteró.

Las estadísticas, según este médico establecen que en la ciudad al menos un 30 por ciento de los niños puede provocar cuadros asmáticos.

“Hay que recordar que estamos en una área donde hace mucho calor, siempre hay una gran cantidad de polvo volando y es lo que detona la enfermedad.

“Deben limpiarse las habitaciones, mantenimiento de limpieza y asear las mascotas y sus espacios para evitar tener un problema de eso”, insistió.

Sobre la importancia de no automedicarse dijo Razo Mancilla que también es peligroso administrarse una dosis de sabutamol sin requerirla, porque puede originar efectos secundarios, taquicardia o broncoespasmos, por eso no es recomendable utilizar el dispositivo para el asma en caso de que no sea asmático.

Los síntomas pueden sobrevenir en ocasiones al día o cada semana, pero algunas personas se agravan durante la realización de actividades físicas o por la noche.

“Son de gran ayuda cuando son niños pequeños, pero si la persona es mayor y nunca ha tenido un acercamniento con la gimnasia cerebral puede hacer estas actividades en casa a la edad que sea y entre más pronto mejor”, expresó.

La psicopedagoga Rosa Angela Villegas, explicó que estos ejercicios mentales estimularán el cerebro poco a poco ayudando a prestarle más atención a las cosas y también a lograr una mejor concentración.

Mencionó que esta técnica enfocada en los niños les ayuda mucho a tener un mayor rendimiento escolar y a desempeñar mejor sus labores.

Presentan mayor disposición para aprender, mejor ejecución de sus tareas y una buena conducta.

Dijo que en ocasiones es común que algunos niños no quieran realizarlas, por lo que dependerá del instructor que las imparta agregarle una buena dosis de positivismo para contagiarles su entusiasmo.

No tienen que realizarse todos los días, puede ser tres o cuatro veces a la semana y con cinco minutos, según la experta, es suficiente.

“Las actividades involucran el jugar con las manos y diferentes partes del cuerpo de forma coordinada y alternar los movimientos, por lo que todos los sentidos deben estar muy alerta para lograrlo”, expresó.

Aunque no importa el horario en el que se realicen, dijo que lo más recomendable es hacerlo en la mañana, ya que al despertar el cuerpo está más descansado.

Reyes Bárcenas explicó que el cerebro tiene dos hemisferios, izquierdo y derecho y que la gimnasia cerebral tiene como finalidad el que ambos trabajen coordinadamente para lograr la resolución de problemas y el logro de metas.

“La mayoria de las personas manejamos o utilizamos nomás uno; quienes somos diestros usamos el hemisferio izquierdo y las personas zurdas el derecho, queremos que los niños puedan estimular ambas partes del cerebro y ser ca-

paces de potenciar su habilidad en áreas como lectura, escritura y matemáticas, pero también potenciar su lado artístico”, explicó.

La psicóloga dijo que algunos estudios demuestran que ayuda a prevenir el alzheimer al mantener al cerebro activo y ejercitado constantemente.

También que en un inicio, estas actividades fueron creadas para niños que presentaban

TDAH (Trastorno por Déficit de Atención e Hiperactividad), pero al ver sus buenos resultados se pusieron al alcance de todos.

Además, ayuda a quienes tienen problemas de dislexia. La psicóloga Reyes Bárcenas, dijo que es recomendable tomar agua y estar bien hidratado antes de las actividades físicas, ya que son similares al calentamiento previo para cualquier deporte.

He recommended isolation of the patient and relative rest, because when it occurs in adults there may be testicular inflammation and cause sterility while in a minor the probability is greater if there is no rest.

The specialist commented that the disease is symptomatic and the treatment is advised to lower the fever and sometimes it can be prescribed anti-inflammatory, although usually, it will not decrease the swelling until the incubation period of the disease ends.

“After three weeks, the contaminant stage will be over so that it will no longer infect others, if someone is in the care or in contact of a patient with mumps, we should cover the respiratory tract and disinfect the toilets if they are community-based,” he warned.

Cano García warned that in some cases it can cause death. There are rare occasions, but it is possible, another consequence of having mumps are hearing problems and can cause deafness.

Mencionó que generalmente se presenta más en los niños y adolescentes; causa inflamación de las glándulas salivales e incluye la parótida, es decir, aumento de parte externa de la mandíbula.

“También se presenta hinchazón de las glándulas sublinguales así como las submaxilares, lo que provoca dolor, fiebre y agotamiento; se identifica por el aumento de la quijada, malestar general y dificultades para comer”, agregó el especialista.

CONTAGIO

De acuerdo con el director médico del Hospital Regional del Río, las vías de contagio son el contacto con fluidos como saliva y orina; en el caso de la primera, explicó que se queda en el ambiente y el aire lleva el virus, mientras que la orina puede lograr transmisión hasta 10 días antes de que se presente la sintomatología completa en el enfermo.

“Una de las formas de transmisión es con el ‘flush’, o sea la saliva que se queda en el aire; la otra es por la orina, este último es un medio de contagio hasta 10 días antes de que se presente la sintomatología por compartir baños no desinfectados”, añadió el cirujano.

Expresó que algunos contagios masivos se presentan porque el paciente no se ha dado cuenta que está enfermo y uti-

Estos son 10 avances más destacados del área: 1.- VACUNA CONTRA EL TIFUS 4Recomendada por la OMS una nueva vacuna logra prevenir 9 de cada 10 casos de fiebre tifoidea.

Este virus afecta cada año a 22 millones de personas, matando a más de 200 mil. Con esta vacuna muchas vidas podrían salvarse, especialmente en los países menos desarrollados que es donde mayor incidencia tiene esta enfermedad.

2.- EDICIÓN GENÉTICA 4Mediante la edición genética se puede eliminar el gen que genera que la persona tenga una enfermedad. Hasta el momento esto era sólo una teoría, pero en 2017 el científico español Francisco Mojica demostró que puede aplicarse en la realidad.

3.- CAMBIAR EL ADN 4Con técnicas de edición genética, un grupo de científicos de Estados Unidos ha intentado con éxito modificar el ADN de un paciente con el síndrome de Hunter. Con este método es posible eliminar los genes que crean esta enfermedad y, al mismo tiempo, abrir la puerta para curar otras enfermedades.

4.- VACUNA CONTRA EL ZIKA 4A pesar de que todavía esta vacuna se encuentra en fase experimental, ha demostrado que el 90% de los participantes en el ensayo respondieron de forma positiva, por lo que se espera que pronto sea formalizada como la primera vacuna para prevenir el contagio de este virus.

The Municipal Government restored the supply of drinking water in the west side of Reynosa through the crews of the Comapa (Municipal Commission for Drinking Water and Sewerage of Reynosa), which culminated the work on España street, in La Canada colony.

For work or fun, the cell phone has become a protagonist in the lives of most people, many sayings circulate around its use and although some are not true some considerations should be taken.

Currently, most people have a dependency on their cell phone.

It does not matter if it’s for work or fun, the mobile accompanies them to their bed and is active minutes before going to sleep and sometimes they first fall asleep before turning it off.

Another very common practice is to place it under the pillow or very close to it to be aware of any call, message, WhatsApp, Tweet or any update on Facebook.

But despite how useful it is for daily life, both in terms of work and personal, there are some things that should be taken into account.

IT DOES NOT CAUSE CANCER

Despite popular beliefs that the cell phone causes serious health risks, such as different types of cancer, there is no scientific evidence to prove it, according to radiation oncologist Agustín Muñoz Villagómez.

Although some websites highlight that the use of cellular equipment can cause cancer of the ear, head, neck and even male sterility, the specialist explained that the appearance of this illnesses have no relation to it.

“The electromagnetic waves that the cell emits are very low frequency and intensity so they do not penetrate all the layers of the organism to produce a tumor or changes inside a cell,” he said.

He commented that for more than fifteen years he has been treating patients with cancer and it has not been proven that all people who have a cell phone have developed cancer.

He added that cancer is multifactorial, that is, there must be several factors for it to appear.

En la actualidad la mayoría de las personas presentan una dependencia hacia su teléfono celular.

No importa si es por trabajo o diversión, el móvil los acompaña hasta su cama y está activo minutos antes de dormir y en ocasiones, primero se quedan dormidas antes de apagarlo.

Otra práctica muy común es colocarlo bajo la almohada o muy cercana a ella para estar al pendiente de cualquier llamada, mensaje, WhatsApp, Tweet o alguna actualización en Facebook.

Pero a pesar de lo útil que es para la vida diaria, tanto en lo laboral como en lo personal, hay algunas cosas que deben tomarse en cuenta.

NO PROVOCA CÁNCER

A pesar de las creencias populares de que el teléfono celular provoca graves riesgos para la salud, como diferentes tipos de cáncer, no hay evidencia científica que lo demuestre, según el radiooncólogo Agustín Muñoz Villagómez.

A pesar de que algunos sitios web destacan que el uso del equipo móvil puede provocar cáncer de oído, de cabeza, de cuello e incluso, esterilidad masculina, el especialista explicó que su aparición no está relacionada con ello.

“Las ondas electromagnéticas que emite

el celular son de muy baja frecuencia e intensidad por lo que no alcanzan a penetrar todas las capas del organismo como para producir un tumor o cambios en el interior de una célula”, mencionó.

Comentó que desde hace más de quince años atiende a pacientes con cáncer y no se ha demostrado que todas las personas que tienen un celular hayan desarrollado cáncer.

Agregó que el cáncer es multifactorial, es decir, para que se presente deben existir varios factores.

NO CAUSA ESTERILIDAD MASCULINA

El médico dijo que el uso de celulares no provoca una disminución en la cantidad de espermatozoides, una baja de calidad del sémen o esterilidad masculina.

Dijo que el calor en la zona, como por ejemplo, al colocar una computadora sobre las piernas sí podrían ser un factor, pero los teléfonos no emiten una temperatura necesaria para lograrlo.

SE LLEVA BIEN CON EL MARCAPASOS

El especialista dijo que marcapasos y celulares han evolucionado mucho y que a pesar de que en un principio no tenían una tecnología tan avanzada, hoy en día una persona puede utilizar las dos cosas al mismo tiempo sin problemas.

“Antes los marcapasos eran susceptibles a

ser afectados por ondas electromagnéticas y se recomendaba no utilizar el teléfono del lado en donde se encontraba, ahora está blindado para evitar interferencias externas”, precisó.

Sin embargo, dijo que la prevención no está de más y que sólo por precaución no hay que acercarlos demasiado, ya que muy remotamente pudiera presentarse una arritmia cardíaca.

MAL AMIGO DEL SUEÑO

En cuanto a su relación con el sueño, advirtió que algunos estudios han demostrado que el tener el celular cercano mientras se duerme mantiene a la persona en estado de alerta, lo que impide un correcto descanso.

“No se sabe si es por estrés o por las ondas electromagnéticas que genera, que afecta a las células nerviosas o es un efecto psicológico de adicción”, detalló.

El portal BBC en español presentó una nota en donde se habla de la relación del trastorno del sueño con el uso de los teléfonos celulares.

En ella, el doctor Charles Czeisler, profesor de medicina del sueño de la Universidad de Harvard, mencionó que la luz de la pantalla interfiere con el proceso de conciliación del sueño, pues hace creer al organismo que aún es de día.

Se cree que la luz artificial inhibe la producción de melatonina, hormona que hace sentir sueño, por lo que las personas se mantienen despiertas por más horas.

Por tal motivo, los expertos recomiendan no utilizar dispositivos electrónicos dos o tres

horas antes de dormir.

Por su parte el doctor Agustín Muñoz Villagómez agregó que el tener una pantalla con alta definición, colores muy nítidos y brillantes y una luz muy intensa durante la noche afecta el ritmo circadiano del organismo.

“El cuerpo humano tiene un rirmo circadiano, está adaptado al día y la noche, si le pones mucha luz por la noche las neuronas lo detectan y el organismo sufre alteraciones, en este caso el ojo es un vínculo directo al tejido nervioso”, explicó.

Esto provoca interrupción del sueño, pesadillas, poco descanso y fatiga al día siguiente.

NO ESTÁ DE MÁS...

Dijo que realizar llamadas demasiado prolongadas podría afectar al oído o a la muñeca por lo que el uso de audífonos o manos libres puede ser una buena alternativa.

Si considera que pasará demasiado tiempo frente al celular por cuestiones laborales, recomendó utilizar una pantalla más grande para ver las letras más grandes y utilizar un protector.

Recomendó a los padres de familia no permitir que los niños pasen demasiado tiempo con el celular pues se reduce su capacidad de socialización e interacción. International speakers were present at the Interventional Endoscopy Course: ESD, POEM, and Endoscopic Suture held at the Santander Hospital and at the events room of a downtown hotel.

Doctors, Michel Kahaleh and Ming-Ming Xu, from the United States, as well as Juan Carlos Carames, from Mexico, gave the foundations of various techniques for the endoscopic treatment of gastric and achalasia neoplasms, as well as the use of endoscopic suture for apposition of tissues.

It was on June 22 and 23, when the activities that aimed to establish the indications and contraindications, essential principles and resolution of possible complications in each

technique were presented.

In the event, there were stations with animal models that were available for handson sessions, under the supervision of the speakers.

In addition, the participants had the opportunity to observe live cases of the techniques performed by the exhibitors.

Procedures were also performed such as an endoscopic gastric sleeve, endoscopic submucosal dissection for gastric and colon cancer and POEM to release narrows without surgery.

During the event, endoscopists from Argentina, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Costa Rica and Mexico participated.

The speakers of the day, have extensive experience in the areas that were presented.

Dr. Ming Min Xu, has extensive experien-

ce in interventional endoscopy and has worked in the advanced endoscopy department at Weill Cornell Medical Center, under the supervision of Dr. Kahaleh.

The director of the endoscopy department at the Weill Cornell College of Medicine in New York, Dr. Michel Kahaleh, has more than 100 publications and his research has focused on interventional endoscopy.

The co-director of the course, doctor Juan Carlos Carames, recently realize a certification in Japan and is one of the best recognized endoscopists in Mexico and Latin America.

Dr. Giovana Porfilia, the coordinator of the course in Argentina, made an invitation to continue this training, which will be held in Posadas, Misiones, Argentina, on August 4 of this year.

endoscopia de Latinoamérica

Técnicas novedosas son presentadas por reconocidos especialistas y expertos de la endoscopia.

Por Beatriz Flores Ponentes internacionales estuvieron presentes en el Curso de Endoscopia Intervencionista: ESD, POEM y Sutura Endoscópica, realizado en el Hospital Santander y en el salón de eventos de un céntrico hotel.

Los doctores, Michel Kahaleh y MingMing Xu, de Estados Unidos, así como Juan Carlos Caramés, de México, impartieron los fundamentos de diversas técnicas para el tratamiento endoscópico de neoplasias gástricas y de acalasia, así como el uso de la sutura endoscópica para aposición de tejidos.

Fueron los días 22 y 23 de junio, cuando se presentaron las actividades que tuvieron como objetivo establecer las indicaciones y contraindicaciones, principios esenciales y resolución de posibles complicaciones en cada técnica.

En el evento se contó con estaciones con modelos animales que estuvieron disponibles para sesiones de hands-on, bajo la supervisión de los ponentes.

Además, los participantes tuvieron la oportunidad de observar casos en vivo de las técnicas realizadas por los expositores.

Se realizaron también, procedimientos como la manga gástrica endoscópica, disección endoscópica submucosa para cáncer gástrico y de cólon y POEM para liberar estrecheses sin cirugía.

Durante el evento se contó con la participación de endoscopistas de Argentina, Perú, Colombia, Ecuador, Costa Rica y México.

Los ponentes de la jornada, cuentan con una amplia trayectoria en las áreas expuestas.

La doctora Ming Min Xu, tiene gran experiencia en endoscopia intervencionista y se ha desempeñado en el departamento de endoscopia avanzada en el centro médico Weill Cornell, bajo la supervisión del Dr. Kahaleh.

El director del departamento de endoscopia en el Colegio de Medicina Weill Cornell, en Nueva York, el doctor Michel Kahaleh, cuenta con más de 100 publicaciones y su investigación se ha enfocado en la endoscopia intervencionista.

The western sector is made up of, among other colonies, Puerta del Sol, Hacienda del Sol, Jarachina Sur, Los Fresnos, Loma Real, Los Arcos, San Valentín, New Mexico, Bugambilias, Aztlán, Campestre, Granjas and Solidaridad.

Jarachina Rebombeo Station is one of the most important stations the Comapa have, because in addition to re-pumping liquid to at least 80 thousand people, it also serves two industrial parks and a large commercial area.

Autoridades constataron el avance en la obra de rehabilitación del sistema de bombeo ubicado en Jarachina Norte, donde además se repone toda la tubería en el manifull de salida, de 24 pulgadas para incrementar el suministro de agua potable a los tanques de almacenamiento que alimentan a los fraccionamientos que dependen de ese sector.

El sector poniente lo integran, entre otras colonias, Puerta del Sol, Hacienda del Sol, Jarachina Sur, Los Fresnos, Loma Real, Los Arcos, San Valentín, Nuevo México, Bugambilias, Aztlán, Campestre, Granjas y Solidaridad.

La Estación de Rebombeo Jarachina es una de las más importantes de Comapa, porque además de rebombear líquido a por lo menos 80 mil personas, lo hace también a dos parques industriales y una amplia área comercial.

Gracias al cumplimiento puntual de pagos de la Comapa de Reynosa a la Comisión Nacional del Agua, por la obtención de agua cruda para potabilización, el organismo operador se beneficia con el Programa de Devolución de Derechos, PRODDER, mediante el cual se logró comprar seis bombas que cumplen con las normas de la CNA. Las seis bombas nuevas mejorarán en breve el abasto de agua potable a las colonias Petrolera, Leal Puente, Las Delicias y Ernesto Zedillo.

Con el crecimiento de equipos de bombeo en la infraestructura de la Comapa de Reynosa, con los recursos del PRODDER se refuerza el bombeo en el sector Poniente 1 y Poniente 2, así como al sector Granjas.

en llegar

Doña Gregoria González Martínez cumplió 40 años ofreciendo sus productos en las calles de este pueblo en la frontera mexicana, donde echó raíces y se ganó el cariño de la gente.

Initially, she traded tablecloths. For many years she was selling hats. She also sold silver jewelry and, from a few years ago, she sells bags for women.

From there she was able to raise her four children, two of whom have returned to the land that saw her born. Two more live with her in Nuevo Progreso.

“I was the first itinerant merchant who came to this town. It’s easy, but the truth is that 40 years have passed since I arrived.

Silvia, who have given me permission to sell outside their pharmacy. In this little corner I’ve always been, thank God,” she said.

ONE OF THE FACES OF THE BORDER

Doña Gregoria, however, never stopped seeing her family, because since she arrived four decades ago in Nuevo Progreso, twice a year she goes to the Estado de Mexico to stock up on products and visits her loved ones.

She also said that outside of her post she has seen an innumerable number of people pass by. In fact, she has started a “nice friendship” with some foreigners who visit her.

“They are the ones who look for me year after year, they are returning clients that I have and since the years I arrived I know people who have kept coming and they remember me, we came from the town very humble,” she said.

This hardworking woman said she was grateful to God, to her fellow merchants and to the public that is looking for the products she manages, some of which are Mexican manufactured, others foreign, but all of them of very good quality.

“Every day I ask God to protect this town and put a fence of angels to take care of it and send many tourists. I always pray that God will fill you with blessings and give you the strength to come back with us,” said Doña Gregoria.

Nació en San Andrés, un pequeño municipio del Estado de México. Hace exactamente cuatro décadas esta mujer emigró al norte del país para buscar una mejor calidad de vida.

Originalmente iba para Estados Unidos, pero decidió quedarse en la frontera de Tamaulipas, donde de igual manera gana en dólares.

El medio de su sustento es un pequeño cobertizo que todos los días monta y desmonta sobre la banqueta de la farmacia La Nueva, situada a dos cuadras del puente internacional.

En Nuevo Progreso, Tamaulipas, se ha distinguido por ser una de las comerciantes más puntuales y disciplinadas.

Trabaja 364 de los 365 días del año, truene, llueve; haga frío o calor ella ahí está vendiendo.

Inicialmente comerciaba manteles.

Durante muchos años estuvo vendiendo sombrero. También vendió joyería de plata y de unos años a la fecha se dedica a la comercialización de bolsas para dama.

De ahí pudo sacar adelante a sus cuatro hijos, dos de los cuales han regresado a la tierra que a ella la vio nacer. Dos más viven con ella en Nuevo Progreso.

“Fui la primera comerciante ambulante que llegó a este pueblo. Se dice fácil, pero la verdad es que ya han pasado 40 años desde que llegué.

“Me tocó conocer gente buena en mi camino, como el doctor Baltazar Mondragón y su hija Silvia, que me han dado permiso de vender afuera de su farmacia. En este rinconcito he estado siempre, gracias a Dios”, relató.

UNO DE LOS ROSTROS DE LA FRONTERA

Doña Gregoria, sin embargo, nunca dejó de ver a su familia, pues desde que arribó hace cuatro décadas a Nuevo Progreso, dos veces por año va para el Estado de México a surtirse de productos y visitar a sus seres queridos.

Dijo además que afuera de su puesto

ha visto pasar una innumerable cantidad de personas. De hecho, ha entablado una “bonita amistad” con algunos extranjeros que la visitan.

“Son los que me buscan año con año, vienen clientes que tengo y desde los años que llegué conozco gentes que han seguido viniendo y me recuerdan, nosotros veníamos del pueblo bien humildes”, manifestó.

Esta trabajadora mujer dijo estar agradecida con Dios, con sus compañeros comerciantes y con el público que busca los productos que maneja, algunos de los cuales son de manufactura mexicana, otros extranjera, pero todos ellos de muy buena calidad.

“Cada día le pido a Dios que proteja este pueblo y ponga una cerca de ángeles para que lo cuide y que mande muchos turistas. Yo siempre oro para que Dios los llene de bendiciones y les dé fuerzas para que regresen nuevamente con nosotros”, mencionó doña Gregoria.

Nuevo Progreso is a town located on the Mexican border with Texas, which practically depends on tourism; However, during the low season, when the winter Texans return to the north of the continent, many of their inhabitants find a means of sustenance in the fields.

They produce okra, a tropical plant with edible fruit with an important demand in the United States.

For the authorities of Nuevo Progreso, it is a plus that helps the municipality, since the economic activity of the okra represents an economic incentive for this small town.

So much is the need to harvest the product that the landlords also hire farmers from other regions of the country to come to work on their plots for seasons.

This translates into an economic spill for Nuevo Progreso since the new tenants also consume in local businesses and have demand for services.

Nuevo Progreso es un pueblo ubicado en la frontera mexicana con Texas, el cual prácticamente depende del turismo; sin embargo, durante la temporada baja, cuando los winter Texans regresan al norte del continente, muchos de sus habitantes encuentran en los campos de cultivo un medio de sustento.

Producen la ocra, una planta tropical de fruto comestible con una importante demanda en Estados Unidos.

Para los estadounidenses representa lo que para los mexicanos es el nopal, por su alta concentración de propiedades.

Es un alimento que se consume mucho al norte de ese país.

Los agricultores comentaron que esta legumbre se siembra en febrero para que se pueda cultivar a mediados o finales de abril y es una planta que tiene muchas aplicaciones, tanto medicinales como alimenticias.

“Nuevo Progreso es un lugar de mucho turismo, pero entre los meses de abril y octubre hay desempleo, por eso la gente acude a las parcelas a trabajar en el cultivo de la ocra.

“Se pizca a diario para que siempre esté fresca y se vende a diferentes compañías que se encargan de procesarla y distribuirla en las tiendas”, mencionó el delegado municipal, Juan Antonio González Cebreros.

BENEFICIA A TODOS

En Nuevo Progreso la actividad de cosecha de la ocra se realiza muy de mañana y por la tarde, para evitar las horas fuertes de calor. Sobre la autopista Reynosa–Matamoros es común observar a los campesinos realizando esta labor portando sombrero y con una canastilla sobre la espalda.

Para las autoridades de Nuevo Progreso es un plus que ayuda al municipio, ya que la actividad económica de la ocra representa un aliciente económico para esta pequeña localidad.

Es tanta la necesidad de cosechar el producto que los terratenientes también contratan campesinos de otras regiones del país para que vengan a trabajar a sus parcelas por temporadas.

Eso se traduce en una derrama económica para Nuevo Progreso, ya que los nuevos inquilinos también consumen en comercios locales y tienen demanda de servicios.

El delegado municipal detalló que incluso existen dos nuevas colonias debido a que la población de este próspero sitio en la frontera mexicana sigue creciendo.

Y sobre todo, que el nombre del poblado es puesto en alto porque de aquí está saliendo un producto de calidad y exportación.

UN PRODUCTO REDITUABLE Y SALUDABLE

Cabe decir que la ocra se siembra en la zona rural de Nuevo Progreso. Los agricultores posteriormente llevan a cabo un trámite de exportación por medio de una agencia aduanal y contratan fletes que transportan el producto a las bodegas del sur de Texas. De ahí se empaqueta y envía al norte del país.

Además estas hortalizas están sujetas a una inspección minuciosa en la aduana americana por parte de las autoridades sanitarias, pues deben estar libres de fertilizantes artificiales.

La ocra forma parte de la ingesta de los habitantes del norte de la Unión Americana y es constantemente prescrita por nutriólogos en las dietas. En los supermercados las latas, frascos y paquetes van desde los 2 hasta los 10 dólares.

Pero para los habitantes de Nuevo Progreso un punto muy importante a considerar es que su demanda produce trabajo mientras baja la afluencia turística, pues en este territorio se trabajan más de 150 hectáreas de ese producto.

Muchas de las personas que laboran en los campos de cultivo, a finales de año se emplean como vendedores ambulantes y así sucesivamente regresan a las parcelas, lo cual es un modus vivendi que impacta positivamente su economía.
