Blood donation: A hope of life

Promoting the culture of blood donation is important to improve the lives of thousands of patients with diseases in their bloodstream.

By Pamela Escobar Blood donation depends on the culture of each country, in nations like the United States, at least 10 percent of its population does it frequently, either free of charge or paid, as reported by Dr. Marco Martínez Mora. In Mexico it is a custom that few people have, said the doctor, although it is considered a great need to have reserve units for patients with diseases in their bloodstream. “In case of an emergency, as for example, after the September 19 earthquake in Mexico City, a lot of blood was required for the number of injured and it is only in those cases where people start to mobilize,” express. He also added that when you have a patient hospitalized for some surgery, at least one plasma package is required and at that moment is when people consider the donation, to say more, out of necessity rather than pleasure. “For those who are going have a surgery procedure hemoglobin is very important, which are the red blood cells of the patient, since it may require bascular packages to intervene, because in a surgical procedure there is blood loss and a hypovolemic shock should be avoided for said loss,” he explained. The doctor said that after having had done a blood donation there is any risk to the organism, only small discomforts like a little weakness, dizziness or nausea on the part of the donor, nothing serious. “The body recovers in approximately 24 to 48 hours, for the restitution of blood it is recommended to ingest enough fluids such as water and electrolytes, a good diet low in fat,” said the graduate of the Universidad Mexico Americana del Norte. He added that the donor should not con-

sume alcohol, tobacco or toxic substances in the next two hours immediately after the donation, to hasten the restoration of health. MYTHS ABOUT DONATION

There are many myths about blood donation, such as the possible transmission of a disease by transfusion, but the doctor reported that everything depends on the quality standards of each laboratory. The person who is going to donate must first undergo laboratory tests, prior to that, in order to rule out certain viral diseases such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), syphilis, hepatitis B and C; and in some countries, malaria, Chagas disease and Brussels. He explained that after discarding these diseases, the requirements to donate blood, are patients who do not used insulin, have no piercings or skin tattoos in the last year,

have not ingested alcoholic beverages in the last 48 hours as well as not having consumed any drugs inhaled, injected or taken in the same period. “After the extraction of 450 milliliters of blood, the plasma passes through other filters such as studies to confirm that the donor has no diseases and that it can be used, either complete or divided by its components such as platelets, white blood cells, red or plasma,” he explained. He commented that if the donated blood does not meet the quality standards it is discarded in its entirety, which is why it is so necessary to donate in Mexico. “It is very important to promote blood donation in our country, since there are natural disasters, catastrophes, accidents, and patients who require it. Mainly those who suffer from cancer, severe anemia and so-

me cases of hemophilia, this last condition is a disease that presents continuous bleeding,” he added. He also said that you can donate up to four times a year and that on average to transplant a unit of plasma costs up to 2 thousand pesos. To do so, you can go to the Red Cross, the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS), General Hospital, as well as the Northeast Blood Bank located in the Rodriguez neighborhood. “Those who can not donate are minors, over 65 years old, carriers of viral diseases such as HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B and C, tuberculosis, insulin-dependent diabetic patients and those who have undergone tattoos or perforations in a shorter period of time. 12 months, as well as people with continuous drug use and patients with epilepsy,” he explained. He mentioned that blood donation helps the recipient and the donor, since the latter allows him to have a better blood flow in addition to constantly knowing his health by previous studies. “The risks that can occur by a blood transfusion are the appearance of minimal reactions such as mild fever, the presence of a mild allergy and nothing else,” he said.

sangre:

Donar

A taboo for men This family planning procedure is disdained by men due to machismo issues.

Vasectomy is the synonym for the woman of salpingoclasm. It is a contraceptive method that serves to interrupt the outflow of seminal fluid and is usually practiced when the couple is well informed and emotionally prepared. “The spouse is the one who will make the decision to have surgery, but many men do not want it because of the myths of their idiosyncrasies. “However, it is a safe procedure. Before it was done as open surgery, which involved regional anesthesia, but now it is without a scalpel, with a technique where the patient at 24 or 48 hours can now be incorporated into their daily lives, as established by the medical literature,” said surgeon Rafael González Sosa. He explained that this procedure, depending on the pain threshold of each person, implies some discomfort and therefore is given a few days of disability. “It’s a matter of information. The patient has to go to the doctor to educate him and tell him the advantages of this surgical method. “This is for couples who have a strong and well-established relationship,” he added.

4Rafael González Sosa

HOW DOES IT WORK

“Even if it is a minimally invasive ambulatory surgery, it must have an entire surgical protocol. The vas deferens is identified. These transport the sperm towards the seminal glands and the prostate conductors, which at the moment of ejaculation, through all the seminal fluid are expelled. “The canal is clamped, cauterized, linked. Some surgeons cut a centimeter of deferent

to be sure that it is well sealed. The passage of the sperm to the ducts is interrupted and with that, they will no longer go out, more than just the seminal fluid. The sperm is reabsorbed in the testicle without this having repercussions,” he explained. MAN DOES NOT BECOME STERILE

Dr. González Sosa said that one of the most frequent questions that a person who is going to have a vasectomy has is to know if it can be reversed. This can usually happen with couples who dissolve their relationship, initiate another relationship and want to form a family. The answer is yes.

FRONTERA DOCTORS HEALTH MAGAZINE | Junio 2018

“The name of this microscopic surgery is called Reversal of vasectomy, in which the ducts are reattached to work again,” he said. Meanwhile, men who do not want to get their partners pregnant and undergo the vasectomy, usually last 10 to 15 minutes for each testicle that is operated, although the entire process of patient preparation, the operating room and that goes out is about an hour, said the specialist. However, González Sosa pointed out that the percentage of men who practice this operation is 5 in a thousand, because there are false myths that they are going to lose their erection, that they will take off their testicles, which will stop ejaculating or they will get prostate cancer.

“It is a very low rate because the culture of family planning the male leaves it to the woman, with the salpingo, the diu, the pill of the next day and the oral anovulatory. “The man if the case will put the condom or have external ejaculations. The patient who prepares for a vasectomy is the one who takes conscience and is prepared to take that step,” he explained. The specialist mentioned the importance of preparing the patient with the information since the first two months minimum will continue to have sperm that was left in the ducts and there is a possibility that he could get his wife pregnant. “This is very important. After the surgery, he is sent to do a study called spermatobioscopy. The patient has to go to a laboratory. The semen is collected and if there is still sperm, we continue waiting for the next analysis. “When it comes out negative, then we can already tell the couple that they can have their sexual relations with full confidence,” he illustrated.

12

HOW MUCH?

Contrary to what one might think, looking good is not the main desire of a woman. Some people even go further and go through the operating room to beautify their body. According to specialists, men are a growing market in the field of plastic surgery that seeks to tone up masculine and even feminine aspects. Rhinoplasty (nose surgery), liposuction, bust enlargement and eyelid correction are some of the scalpel methods that are most recurrent. According to the International Society of Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery (Isaps), the United States, Brazil, and Mexico lead the list of countries where most operations are carried out, ranging from 460 thousand to one million. cases every year. In the first place, what worries them most is to look slender, for that reason the liposculpture is the most demanded surgery of all, removing the fat accumulations of the body. In fact, the same removed fat is used to mold other areas of the body, being more effective and less risky than placing foreign or synthetic products. The group of men who perform the most is between 25 and 45 years old.

The average cost of plastic surgeries (note: these vary according to each specialist)

A PRETTY FACE

Yes, men are also worried about the appearance of their face and for that, those who have the financial means, for about 70 thousand pesos (with a reputable doctor), resort to rhinoplasty, to turn that nose that many do not pleases by nature. Some mention that they do it to solve congenital problems, to be able to

breathe better, to correct childhood defects or deviations due to blows, while they are less accepting that it is for pleasure and to look better. But if it’s about reshaping their features, mentoplasty is another intervention most requested in plastic surgery clinics. This helps to give a better shape to the jaw and may require the support of a multidisciplinary medical group, such as dentists and orthodontists. Many of the people who want to change their masculine aspect to the feminine one undergo this procedure, but an important sector of men looks for it to improve their appearance and rejuvenate their face. WHATDOES THE GYM CAN NOT, THE SCALPEL CAN ...

There have been cases of actors, singers and even boxers who have resorted to lipolysis or high definition, another

of the aesthetic medical resources to tone the body and make it look more athletic. According to plastic surgeons, this operation is one of the most sought-after options for those who are tired of sweating, exercising and not feeling strong results in their body. With this procedure, you can mark the pectorals, abdomen, shoulders, back, arms, and legs. However, there is a part of the body that can easily make an age difference and that is located in the head. Alopecia or hair loss worries a lot of the male population. The vast majority travel to the use of dermatological treatments and shampoos to delay the degeneration of the hair follicle, but others get implants. Although the absence of hair may be due to genetic factors, some variants of thyroidism or excessive stress, em-

bedding is an increasingly required procedure. It is an effective solution for men who want to avoid getting bald. These operations in men can be quite controversial, there is one that for some years is becoming very fashionable and is the breast implant. Just as he reads it, many men are those who are looking to modify their physique through surgeries. Transsexual people do not receive much breast tissue based on hormonal treatment, so they seek to increase their breasts through a surgeon. The operation lasts approximately one hour, the recovery is from seven to 14 days and the treatment is very similar to that which is practiced on women. There are those who also resort to the surgery of buttocks and other areas of the body, such as the eyelids and eyebrows, in an industry that grows by leaps and bounds every year. However, in general, the medical community constantly calls on patients to avoid being put at risk, since in some cases infections arise that, in their desire to achieve beauty, can even end in a fateful manner.

There are more and more artists using different techniques in their pictorial work, but it is increasingly difficult to believe that what they are using are brushes for oil on canvas, acrylic on canvas or wood, or charcoal and pencil on paper is this for real, paintings and not photographs that are capture by a lens. This is a series of works by various painters and draw artists who have installed themselves in what is called hyperrealism because of the quality they imprint on their works. Incredible. Anyone can have artistic restlessness but having the talent and skill necessary to be a realistic painter is not within the reach of any mortal. There are painters and cartoonists who manage proportion and perspective with mastery as the protagonists of this collection who have a mastery of light and shadows of fantastic exquisite. Many are the topics that retract, but undoubtedly the human face is an inexhaustible vein for artists. When you enjoy paintings and drawings that seem so real, it is hard to believe that they are not a photograph. The first comment of those who see them and tell them that it is not a photo but a drawing or a painting, their immediate response is ÂżRealy? Are you serious? ... Amazing!

Rebuilding self-esteem Breast cancer is the leading cause of death in women in Mexico. By Pamela Escobar Breast reconstruction is the surgery performed on cancer survivors, who after said disease underwent mastectomy, that is, the removal of the mammary gland, in such a way that the breast or breasts are reconstructed. According to the plastic, aesthetic and reconstructive surgeon, Óscar Gerardo González Rodríguez, it is a procedure that can be performed in one or several different times, all this will depend on the patient, as he said, all cases are and are addressed in different ways. “To begin with, we have to work together with the oncologist, who decides what to do with the breast that has cancer. “Since there are procedures that can be conservative, that is to say, removing a part of the breast or preserving the areola-nipple complex and being able to do the immediate reconstruction,” he said. FIRST STAGE

There are two ways for breast reconstruction, one of them is by means of prosthetic implants or with tissue from the same patient. In the case of implants, in turn, they can be of two types through immediate reconstruction, that is, during mastectomy surgery; which is to place the implant directly. The other, when the patient underwent a mastectomy and it has already been some time, in which case, the tissue expanders are used, which are used to make a space to place the implant, since the tissue and skin have been removed. retracted “These artifacts are a sachet similar to the implant that is filled with solution until achieving or achieving the adequate volume, depending on the healthy breast and in a second surgery to place the definitive implant; there are some expanders that are definitive, since they exert both functions (expand and give the volume),” detailed the specialist. He added that autologous tissues are known in the medical environment as muscle-cutaneous flaps and muscle flaps. In the case of the former, skin, muscle and move to the chest area to give the volume and make the reconstruction. You can also use a muscle of the abdomen called Tram, for its acronym in English. “After any of these different procedures is how the first part of the restoration of the breast is concluded,” said the doctor. SECOND STAGE

The second phase is the reconstruction of the areola-nipple complex, part of the breast that is also removed when radical surgeries are performed. For this there are multiple techniques, said the doctor, one of the most common is to place a graft of the same patient or make a design with flaps with portions of the skin of the same breast, making some cuts in a special way that is able to build the areola-nipple. You can also use tattoos simulating an areola. LAST STAGE

In a third time the symmetrization is done, which as the na-

me says, try to make the breasts look the same, normally this is done in the healthiest. “In such a way that the patient can recover the self-esteem that can be lost after suffering from cancer, as well as eliminate the psychological affectation when being mutilated by the loss of one of her breasts,” affirmed the plastic surgeon. OBJECTIVE OF RECONSTRUCTION

González Rodríguez said that the number one goal of breast reconstruction is to restore self-esteem to the patient. “When the breast is removed and they look in the mirror, it affects them a lot, affecting their intimate life, which can increase the rate of divorce in cancer patients. Unfortunately, as men, we do not have the culture. There is still some Mexican machismo and if the couple is not well identified with the problem, it is very frequently the break-in the marriage,” said the doctor. He added that one of the problems is that the woman feels sorry even in when they are alone in their bedroom for not having a breast and that is one of the reasons for breaking the marriage relationship, so reconstruction helps the patient to restore trust in herself. ACCESSIBILITY AND FREQUENCY OF THE PROCEDURE

which is the best method to detect any injury “On the opposite side, if it is detected in time and the complete removal of the breast is not reached, it is called conservative surgery, which may be a subcutaneous or partial mastectomy, where we use the implants to bring the volume more or less similar to the breast that didn’t have surgery,” he said. Currently there are protocols for conservative surgery on the part of the oncologist that allow reconstruction at the time, but it will depend on the characteristics and size or study of the tumor to make a decision. RECOVERY

The recovery time will depend on the method used in each patient, in the case of immediate reconstruction is a similar period to the women who get implants cosmetically, because in two or three weeks they return to their normal life. “When done by means of the expander, the process is prolonged and will depend on the size of breast against lateral, because it is the time that we will take to inflate the expander that can be two months and then the other phases up to 8 months. months, or a year in which the total reconstruction process is concluded,” warned the surgeon. RECONSTRUCTION ON BOTH BREASTS

According to Dr. González Rodríguez, breast cancer occupies the first place in deaths in women. In Mexico it is a disease that can be detected in the early stages, improving the prognosis of the patient’s life. can perform conservative surgeries making reconstruction easier That is why there is a lot of emphasis on self-exploration,

Breast reconstruction can be done in both breasts, at the same time and in different times. “We had the case that a breast was already amputated because of a cancer and at the time it has a new tumor in the other breast and the first breast has already passed the recovery period, so the reconstruction can be done and the other will depend on the study to be done

In addition to all of the above, González Rodríguez pointed out that for the management of cancer patients there are many specialists who are part of it, turning it into a multidisciplinary one. “Initially, especially when performing radical surgeries, the oncologist, the psychologist, the reconstructive plastic surgeon, the nuclear physicians or clinical oncologists who are the ones who administer the chemo or radio therapies and the pathologist, who is the one who will define the lineage and the degree of progress of the tumor, among others,” he said. He added that all certified plastic surgeons are trained to perform these procedures, so it is recommended to go with them for this type of management. “All those women who are in a situation of this type, should discuss with your oncologist, what are the possibilities of managing a reconstruction, immediately or in a

AMBAS MAMAS A RECONSTRUCCIÓN

Colorectal cancer

W

hat is colorectal cancer? It is also known as colon cancer or rectal cancer. It refers to any cancer found in the colon, from the start (it’s call a blind portion), until the end on the rectum. It occurs when cells lining the inside of the colon become abnormal and grow uncontrollably. It begins with when small tissue growths, called polyps, appear and develop into cancerous lesions unless detected and treated in a timely manner. A portion of patients with colorectal cancer are sporadically, which mean they don’t have any previous family history of cancer. However, there is a strong hereditary predisposition for individuals whose parents had colon cancer to develop the disease at earlier ages. What are the symptoms? A large number of patients with colorectal cancer do not experience any symptoms in the early stages of the disease. In fact, it often goes unnoticed until it has reached advanced stages. For this reason, routine screening and awareness of risk factors are extremely important. Because many of the symptoms of colon cancer also appear in a variety of other colon diseases, it is important to consult a specialist in endoscopy to conduct studies and achieve timely detection. Some symptoms can appear in isolation or together, and they include -Blood in feces -Diarrhea not resulting from disease or diet

-Long-term constipation -Abdominal pain or cramps -Changes in bowel movements -Persistent decrease in the size of feces -Frequent sensation of bloating -Weight loss with no known cause In its initial phases, patients tend to present no symptoms. How is the diagnosis made? The ideal form of detection is to undergo a colonoscopy. Arising lesions found during the examination can be removed at that moment. In previous times, rectal exam and a search for blood in feces were performed as part of diagnosis; however, these may present an incomplete picture, particularly in patients who may present no symptoms until late stages of the disease. What is a colonoscopy? It is an visual examination of the rectum and colon performed by introducing a flexible tube with a special camera attached to the end through the anus. This allows the physician to observe the interior of the colon to search for abnormalities and identify any polyps or rising cancer. The patient must undergo special preparation comprised of a liquid diet, enema, and laxatives to allow for a clean colon and good visibility at the time of examination. Any polyps found can be removed without the need of surgery. In case of finding a tumor, a biopsy can be obtained and removed through the working channel of the colonos-

cope, allowing the physician to obtain a small tissue sample of the area for further examination under the microscope. Generally the procedure is performed at an outpatient clinic with the use of a sedative. Patients sleep during the procedure and feel little to no discomfort. Occasionally, air that is introduced into the colon during the procedure may cause cramps temporarily at the end. How is colorectal cancer prevented? The only way of preventing this fatal disease is by performing a screening colonoscopy that may lead to detection of polyps. International guidelines recommend that all individuals over the age of 50 should undergo a screening colonoscopy. Our experience has allowed us to find polyps in patients as young as 45. Sons or daughters of individuals with colon cancer should undergo the examination at earlier ages. How is colorectal cancer treated? Resection of benign or malign polyps during colonoscopy: Polyps can be removed at the time of the screening procedure through a technique called polypectomy. Once the polyp is extracted, it is sent to be examined under the microscope to determine it malignancy or the presence of cancer. It is possible to remove a malignant polyp and leave behind only healthy tissue, effectively avoiding a possible cancer from spreading. Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection (ESD): In case of finding flat cancerous lesions with minimum depth and no invasion to deep layers of the colon, it is possible to perform a minimally invasive surgery called Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection. With the use of electrosurgical tools and high-quality accessories, it is possible to remove the lesions without the need for invasive surgeries, minimizing the length of hospital stay and recovery periods. Surgery: The purpose is to completely eliminate the invasive cancer, relieve the symptoms, and offer a better opportunity of healing. Candidates for surgery undergo preparatory examinations to discard the possibility of invasion to other organs, which include enema of barium, endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), CT scan, x-rays, and blood work testing for specific cancer antigens, depending on the location of the tumor. It’s important to note that the earlier diagnose of the colonrectal tumor the less invasive the treatment and a better chance for total recovery.

Cáncer Colorrectal

¿

OPINION By Jesus Vidaurri Leal

What is presbyopia?

P

resbyopia “old eye” is when the eyes gradually lose the ability to see objects up close. You can begin to notice presbyopia shortly after age 40. What are the causes of presbyopia? The transparent lens rests on the inside of the eye behind the iris and changes shape to focus the light on the retina so you can see. When a person is young, the lens is soft, flexible and can change shape easily. This allows you to focus on objects both near and far. After age 40, the lens becomes stiffer and cannot easily change shape. This makes reading difficult, it becomes more difficult to perform tasks that require close observation. There is no way to stop or reverse the normal aging process that causes presbyopia. However, presbyopia can be corrected with glasses, contact lenses or surgery. If you do not correct presbyopia, you may feel discomfort caused by headaches and eye fatigue. WAYS TO CORRECT PRESBYOPIA

Use reading glasses: If presbyopia is the only problem in vision (you do not have nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism), you may only need glasses. Reading glasses help correct vision problems by bending (refracting) the light before it enters the eye. BIFOCAL, TRIFOCAL OR PROGRESSIVE LENSES

If glasses are already used for other vision

problems, the use of bifocal, trifocal or progressive lenses will now be needed. • Bifocals correct vision from near and far. A line that can be seen or not, divides the lens. The lower part of the lens refracts light for near vision. The upper part refracts the light so that you can see distant objects. • Trifocals have three zones on the lens to correct near vision, intermediate vision, and far vision. • A progressive lenses correct vision such as bifocals and trifocals. However, instead of having a line that divides each refractive area, the refraction changes gradually through the lens from top to bottom. Contact lenses: Some people prefer to wear contact lenses instead of glasses. There are two types of contact lenses that help treat presbyopia: • Monovision contacts. These contact lenses correct the vision of one eye to see from far and the other to see up close. • Multifocal contacts. These lenses have different rings or zones with different graduations. With this design, both near and far vision are used at the same time. Refractive surgery: Some people decide to undergo surgery to get monovision. This can reduce the need to wear glasses to see near and far objects. With a laser, the ophthalmologist changes the shape of the cornea for a clear vision from far in one eye and closely in the other. Your ophthalmologist may recommend that you try monovision lenses before undergoing LASIK surgery. In this way, you will know if monovision is a convenient option for you.

¿Qué es la presbicia?

L

Against

sexual abuse Respect, real information, communication, and trust are some tools that parents can give to children to try to prevent them from being victims of some type of aggression.

By Beatriz Flores Talking about child sexual abuse is a sensitive issue, even in this era of so much openness is a taboo that not many can break. It is a situation that does not differentiate sex, social class or age, the truth is that when it happens, it changes the life of the victim and the family. Psychologist Delia Véliz Banda, director of Mission Wellness Center of Life (Bimivi) said that unfortunately there is a growing incidence of abusers who are known or sometimes part of the family. “There is a lot of resistance on the part of the parents to deal with the issue, but we must focus on the attention we give our children and always talk about prevention,” she said. She said that not many people can face it, they are not used to talking about it because of cultural issues, and when a case arises, parents experience great guilt for having to leave the child in charge or not pay attention. “Guilt is one of the main obstacles in attending to children, parents do not take the next step and prefer to pretend that nothing happened,” she said. BUT WHAT HAPPENS WITH THE CHILD?

The psychologist said that it will depend on the degree of awareness of the child to be able to work in their sexual reeducation, because the smaller they are, the prognosis will be more favorable. She explained that sometimes the predator makes it look like a game and the child does not experience a trauma as such, especially when the abuse consisted of touching or sexual games. “It is very important to work also with the parents or with the family because many times the child can face it quickly or easily, but the father continues treating him as a victim and can create a different emotion and the damage can continue because of the treatment they did not have,” she said. When a penetration is performed or there is genital damage, the child experiences pain and may be more difficult to treat. According to the expert, if the child does not go to therapy there may be an early sexual awakening, being very precocious children or having inappropriate behaviors towards their partners and experiencing and when they get older there may be a different connotation when having a partner. “It is very important that it is treated, that he or she receives psychological support, it does not matter if it was just touching or exposure to images we have to teach the child that this is not correct and what it should be, should know that this is not normal,” she said.

Nor should be forced to kiss or hug people, especially those who they do not want to, no matter if they are family. WARNING SIGNS

Sudden behaviors such as fear, withdrawal, withdrawal in their development or constipation problems, especially if several at the same time, can be associated with some kind of abuse. “Suddenly the child no longer wants to go to certain places or visit some people, it happens for some reason. You have to pay attention to all the details,” she said. She added that it is very important that parents trust their intuition when they see behaviors that they consider different in their children. “If there is a fear that something is happening, they should go to the pediatrician to have the child reviewed, understand why they are having doubts and not minimize anything, but do not exaggerate, just keep things the way they are to have a better abiTHE PARENTS ROLLS lity to respond to the situation,” The director of Bimivi stressed the importanshe said. ce of talking with the children about sexualiA big mistake that is sometity and doing it naturally, despite the difficulmes made, is not to believe the ties it may present. child, which causes him to lose “It’s very difficult because it has to do with confidence. our stories, but the more you speak in a natu“The child will always ask for ral, simple and appropriate way to their age help and if the first person who the easier it is to make the child learn it,” she is the father does not believe him explained. or does not listen to him, he will She said that calling the sexual organs by name is part of the tools that are given to the child.

A delicious

adventure

The Matehuala Trejo family is dedicated to the elaboration of artisanal sweets in the tourist town of Nuevo Progreso. Their products are popular among winter Texans and they even have orders from Washington, DC. By José Manuel Meza Nuevo Progreso, Tam. The caramel aroma be felt in the environment. They are the caramel nuts that Gloria and Francisco prepare every day for tourists who visit Nuevo Progreso, Tamaulipas. From three bags for five dollars, this family has sold many for years on the sidewalk to be able to give education to their daughter and sustain them. To this day, the family business is already maintained by its own prestige, each one taking care of its own post. “It’s quite the job and more right now for the hot season, but it’s worth it and people like it a lot. My husband has been making sweets for almost two decades now and half of that is what I have been making, too,” she said. While stirring the casserole in which she makes the sweets, Gloria explained the procedure to which she imparts a special touch and flavor. “These candies are 100 percent natural. First, we have to pour water, sugar, and vanilla. We must wait until it boils well to be able to throw the nut. “Later, she pours cinnamon. We continue shaking for another 10 minutes and at

44

the end, butter is added, so that there is no crowing. Here the trick is that you have to be stirring the sweets because if not they burn. That is the secret,” she illustrated. MEXICAN TRADITION SWEETS

Making each kilogram of the product can take 20 to 30 minutes, but Gloria prepares up to 300 bags a day and is used to it. “Sometimes the 400 are exhausted in a weekend and when work comes down, about 100 are sold every two or three days. Although it is quite warm thanks to God, people request them,” he said. In addition to pralines, Gloria and her husband prepare almonds, peanuts, sunflower seeds and squash. In Nuevo Progreso space has already been made among the hundreds of merchants that serve tourism and are part of the colorful atmosphere of this Mexican border town. “We have stayed from this. The clientele can locate us on the main avenue of Nuevo Progreso in front of Arturo’s restaurant and the Dental Work clinic, in our two positions,” he said. Gloria said she was happy because her sweets are liked by the people and because she has clients who visit her each year.

smile

This patient went to the office of Dr. René Rosas, in Nuevo Progreso, Tamaulipas, where 27 dental pieces were repaired and here he presents his testimony. them in Nuevo Progreso. “Then they would say to me: ‘N’hombre, and Luis Miguel (the singer) stayed short of so much laughter that you bring now’ (laughs) ...”, he said.

By José Manuel Meza Nuevo Progreso, Tam. A few weeks ago he was very careful to sketch a smile. It grieved him, especially with strangers, but today his life has taken a positive turn and he mentions that he feels renewed. Abraham Sevilla Peña is a patient at the Dental Artistry office, located in Nuevo Progreso, Tamaulipas, a Mexican town that is known as the capital of medical tourism. He came to this place from a recommendation and now it is he who guarantees the work they did to him. “They advised me to visit with doctors René Rosas and Nadia Cortez because they provide very good care and now that they have completed a dental work that they gave me in three sessions, I can give my opinion. “I would like to say that I am very grateful to Dr. René, who has treating me. He was always very aware that I did not feel any discomfort. “He constantly asked me if I felt any discomfort to attend to it and the work would go much better. On that side I recommend it to all people who want to get a dental work done, to do the same as me,” he said. Mr. Sevilla Peña affirmed that he was one of the people who turned the dentists around because in the past he had had bad experiences. “Here the important thing is to go with the right people, in this case, Dental Artistry and you have to be encouraged. Now technology has advanced a lot and in that sense, doctors have the best. They have devices with which one does not feel any discomfort. And they are very aware of that,” he said.

A BETTER LOOK NOW

FUNDAMENTAL ASPECTS

The patient interviewed, who now sports a radiant smile, said that in this place they pay attention to even the smallest details in the care and restoration of the teeth. “The most important aspect is that the patient feels the least possible pain. They are constantly asking you if you feel any discomfort so that they can take of it and I was very grateful for that. “In my case, the doctor began cleaning me, because it is fundamental and basic. La-

ter I required some implants. It came to the amount of 27 pieces that had to replace me and the truth for the aesthetic question I am very happy because I changed completely. “Now that I have completely renewed my teeth and changed physically, I feel the best,” said this patient. Mr. Sevilla Peña lets out a laugh saying that now he can smile in all the photographs. “I told the doctor that my friends told me that you could tell that I was being treated by the dentist. They asked me where and I told

In addition to feeling good, Sevilla Peña shares his testimony with other people, that going to the dentist is not always what you think. “Everyone wants to be the best, but sometimes we are afraid. Sometimes because of a bad experience from the past, because they did not have the proper equipment and technique yet, but this has already changed. “I’m a 60-year-old person and I’m talking about going to the dentist for a long time and I did not want to go back. Years passed and technology advanced. I can say that now doctors have the best advances so as not to suffer what was previously suffered. “Especially with Dr. René and Dr. Nadia Cortez have the most current devices and that makes us not suffer when they are intervening,” he said. And it is that foreign patients from the Valley of Texas come to this office, and now greater number of Mexican residents too. “Here you are in the waiting room with people from the United States, Canada, Asians and people from the region. “Why? Because they are attracted by the price, professionalism, good service and apart from taking a trip here in Nuevo Progreso to take other things,” said Sevilla Peña, accompanied by his wife, Alicia Heredia. On this occasion, more than listening to the opinion of the surgeon, it was the same patient who told his experience with the dentist.

Feliz

con su nueva

sonrisa

Resisting the passage

of time

La Nueva and Celaya pharmacies were founded by Baltazar Mondragón Moreno, who was the first doctor in this Mexican border town. By José Manuel Meza Nuevo Progreso, Tam. Although they started as pharmacies, Celaya and La Nueva preceded the pharmaceutical ‘boom’ that today lives in this tourist town. According to historians, more than 65 years ago the severe floods that affected the community of Río Rico, facilitated the formation of Nuevo Progreso, Tamaulipas, as groups of Americans settled in the southern United States used to cross the border to distract themselves. Therefore, as the years passed, this community grew and with it came the shops, but also the pharmacies. It was at the end of the 50s when Mondragón Moreno established the first one here, which he called Celaya. Later, at the dawn of the 70s, La Nueva opened, which today is one of the most important in Nuevo Progreso. “They were the only drugstores that were there at

the time. The first doctor who came to Nuevo Progreso was my father. When he graduated from the Unvirsidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico(UNAM) he did his social service in Rio Rico. “He returned to the capital to do his professional exam and when he returned to the border he arrived in Nuevo Progreso to never leave,” said his daughter Silvia Mondragón. ATTENTION AND SERVICE

All the patients Dr. Baltazar had in the nearby communities of Rio Rico went looking for him when he was already establish in Nuevo Progreso, although the vast majority came from the United States. At his pharmacy Celaya, located one block from Benito Juarez Avenue, he was selling medicine. The demand was increasing and opened a second branch on the main street of this town. “With time arrived the doctors, García Borrego and June 2018 | NUEVO PROGRESO - Magazine

Raúl Cortez. And the first dentist we had in the town was Dr. Jesus Aguirre. There were the old customs and his office was located right by its side. “Papá died four years ago, in 2014, but he is one of the pillars of Nuevo Progreso,” said Mondragón. It was a time of splendor of a town that already flourished with the arrival of the Americans. While his father consulted in Celaya, his mother, Mrs. Elsa Villanueva attended La Nueva. “From the beginning, this pharmacy is distinguished because it is handled with haberdashery. It is a pharmacy that for many years has served the American and the people of the region, everyone has been treated well,” he said. Currently, La Nueva continues to preserve its old façade and its wellstocked shelves of merchandise, groceries and mainly medicines. A SAFE NUEVO PROGRESO

The interviewee affirmed that there is a lot of people that have arrive from other parts that she does not know anymore, but that in the same way, she

continues to pay a lot of attention to tourism. “Our visitors feel safe and that’s why people do not stop coming,” she added. Mondragón said she was very happy that for more than 55 years the La Nueva pharmacy, of the first two, the only one that remains to stand, has served many people to take care of their health. “To date, there are people who keep coming during many years, because it was the custom that is from the pharmacies of old times, but having good employees like Alda, that takes good care of the costumers, that is why they return. “The Americans are still looking for the same place where they are served and every year they are always expected with the same pleasure and giving them excellent attention,” she said. Although this is a very small town, the shops take great care of their tourism and provide good care, as is the case of La Nueva and at the same time the oldest pharmacy in Nuevo Progreso.

THE WONDERFUL YEARS 4For the children of the previous owners of Nuevo Progreso like Mr. Baltazar Mondragón, the forerunners of local commerce, the culture of good customer service has been fundamental and is the best inheritance they could receive. “We are very proud to know that the people from before like Don Ernesto Treviño, of whom I remember, Don Juan Benítez, Raymundo Castañeda; my godmother, Myrna Terán; the Olivares’, the Cantú’s, are among those who started the town. It is a privilege because they were people who, like my dad, did their business with a lot of hard work, and exemplary,” she said. Mondragón recalled that just as the pharmacies Celaya and La Nueva were very busy places, there were other establishments that were part of the charm of Nuevo Progreso. “I remember, for example, Arturo’s restaurant, when the owner was Mr. Arturo Arredondo, who would wear a suit and that’s how he received the Americans. People came to dinner and the gentlemen dressed in suits and ladies long. “They went up and at the top section was where dinner was served, and there was a small dance floor. “It was a very nice place and the waiters seemed to go to a wedding, because they wore a tuxedo, they were impeccable. In the street behind lived Don Lolito, Mr. Arturo’s father and even the other corner there were pure American-style houses where his workers lived. It was a very beautiful time. “And of all the old people of yesteryear now there is nobody left, more than the children and grandchildren, and they are also hardworking people,” she said.
