HOPART 2019

Congratulations to the students in the Hopkinton High School Art Department, its exemplary teachers, and this rich, professional publication. It has been a very real privilege to serves as this year’s juror. As a visual arts instructor in higher-education for twenty-six years I recognize quality and authenticity when I see it. Foremost, the student work I was presented with demonstrates remarkable agency and refreshing diversity in thought and practice. As I carefully reviewed so many images of myriad forms, the evidence mounted quickly that students at Hopkinton are being taught not only how to ask questions- but how to seek and ask better questions. Students here are given thoughtful, generous technical and conceptual support to find their own unique voices and the gift to acquire their own sense of discovery. Finally, I wish to applaud the visual arts program at Hopkinton High School and its students for providing work that is the “real deal”. In my opinion, in the fast-paced, ever changing “Art World” of today, honor and respect too often are lavished primarily on the artist’s intentions. Sometimes, the object, the art form, gets created and viewed as a meager placeholder or signpost that points to “ideas” -often quite tangential. I am very gratified to see the work in this publication embodies genuine craft and skill that evokes and summons feelings without taking shortcuts around the difficult challenges of achieving mastery in a medium. Kudos to all of you! Anthony Fisher Associate Professor, Fine Arts University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth
