“To express yourself is your birthright.” Louise Bourgeois, artist
Making art is deeply human. Every Hopkinton High School student whose artwork I reviewed expressed herself or himself in special and thoughtful ways. Each of you should consider it a huge personal success to have shared your art. Half of the creative act is making it, and the other half is showing it to someone else. It is brave and so are each of you. Like artwork creation, the process of artwork review is a journey. From drawing to graphic design, from ceramics to digital art and photography, you offered me a rainbow of artistic production. All media are expressive. Mastering the medium whereby one finds the limits of each in order to speak something authentic is the key. I found a unique celebration of humanity in all the work that I selected for HopArt 2014. The works that stood out have a voice that I can’t stop hearing, equal parts execution and uniqueness. Find that strange beauty and access it, all of us have it. Artwork that pairs this strong voice with hard work in one’s craft stands apart. Sometimes I selected more than one artwork by the same artist. I was compelled to present these bodies of work because I learn more, and feel more deeply, through the relationships created between works. As the exhibitions director at the New Art Center in Newton, an organization whose mission is to support the development of visual artists and cultivates a community that appreciates art, I select, nurture and provide feedback on a plethora of artistic visions. But what might be my most important job is that of collaboration and the facilitation of critical thinking in a group in order to realize an exhibition of art.You are learning these collaborative skills in your art studio classes, with your teachers and your peers. Believe in this process, which enables you to look within yourself while connecting this self to others. Try and find this wherever you go. I have and it has led me to you and your incredible artwork. Who knows where it will lead us next!
