Message From the President and Co-Founder
IF
you’re like me, you may be wondering when mentioning a global pandemic won’t be necessary in every annual report. Despite the ongoing challenges COVID-19 puts before us, this year, we were able to enroll more kids than the previous year...14% to be precise. We were able to see more kids receive their first brace. With your help, we were able to change more lives.
Behind these numbers are real people. Like you, these families have hopes and dreams for their kids. While too young to have dreams of their own, each child we serve has that hope deep in their hearts not yet expressed. But it is there. Jayson is one of these kids whose dream at the moment is as simple as running and playing with his friends. This five-year-old boy from Kenya graduated from the clubfoot program this year and for him, all his dreams have already come true. He is full of energy. Running and biking through his neighborhood always looking for a pal to have some fun with. I don’t want to imagine what his life would be like now if his family never found treatment. Then there is Abigail in Malawi. After warm water and massage oils did nothing to correct her feet, her parents, Masina and Monica, found true healing at a Hope Walks partner clinic. Who knows where this healing will take Abigail in life, but as for her parents, they are now gladly spreading the word that clubfoot is treatable. Perhaps, more importantly, is the spiritual impact you help make in these lives. This starts with sharing God’s love through the care provided to those we serve. Haoua in Niger noticed this right away when she first brought her daughter Zalika in for treatment. “You Christians are different. You have love in you and you love everybody,” she told our staff. This love has helped more than 800 individuals express their faith in Christ this past year and hundreds more people reconnecting with a local church. It is stories like these that keep us going. We see daily the impact you are making in so many lives. The healing process of clubfoot makes a difference for the kids who find healing, the families that love them, and the communities they are a part of. Thank you. In Hope,
FY 2021 Highlights
Brace painting parties Not exactly a new concept for Hope Walks, but the idea of having Individuals paint braces rose to a new level in FY21. Now employers, churches, and small group leaders can order full “party” boxes or individual leathers to paint and send back to Hope Walks. Tracking tags allow us to send each painter a photo of their leathers once turned into a life-transforming brace. Who knew correcting clubfoot could be so much fun and make such an impact! The families we serve are excited to see the amazing artwork of friends in the US and know their child is being prayed for.
Superstar supporterS Brian Long and his daughter McKenzie turned a life-long dream of thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail into an opportunity to raise money and awareness for kids with clubfoot. Their efforts garnered media attention and nearly $9,000 to help treat kids.
PATH Tool In FY21, Hope Walks developed a strategy to improve our monitoring and evaluation efforts that will be primarily implemented through a new digital health tool specific to clubfoot treatment. Through a partnership with Akros, a global health data-driven organization, Hope Walks has invested countless hours in the planning, development, and initial pilot of our Patient Assessment Toward Healing (PATH) tool. PATH is built on the DHIS2 platform which is widely used in low- and middle-income countries’ public health settings. Through the end of 2022, Hope Walks will continue to implement PATH in all clinics. This will allow for the collection of timely, accurate, and individualized patient information to help our staff more effectively support families and monitor program outcomes. 3

ayson is one of our success stories. This energetic fiveyear-old recently graduated from Hope Walks’ clubfoot program. Even though both of Jayson’s parents are medical professionals, their knowledge of clubfoot was limited. Giving birth to a child with clubfoot was a shock to this family. Equally surprising was when they learned their son’s treatment at the Hope Walks’ partner clinic at the Association for the Physically Disabled of Kenya would not cost them anything.
“The parent advisor at the clinic supported us emotionally and spiritually until we were back on our feet in accepting the reality of clubfoot, and that it has been corrected,” Jayson’s mom said.

Sahda
When their baby boy was born with clubfoot, Siraj and Seada had different opinions on what to do. The father, Siraj thought his boy would be healed without medical treatment, but Seada wanted to find treatment at a clinic. Even though she wanted to find treatment, Seada thought the added challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic would make it hard to find treatment. However, a nurse encouraged her to take Sahda to the Hope Walks partner clinic at Black Lion Hospital in Addis Ababa. Seeing his son’s healing, Siraj has come around to accepting the treatment.
“My family and relatives have not visited us since the baby was born, but you [parent advisors] came to visit. You and Hope Walks are my family,” Siraj said.

here’s a saying, “you get what you pay for.” But in the case of Lumenie and her daughter Deborah in Haiti, they discovered that when it comes to clubfoot treatment, “free” is always best.
Deborah was born with clubfoot and her mom Lumenie was taking her to a clinic that was not having success correcting her clubfoot. Even worse, the treatment was very expensive. When a nurse saw Deborah struggling with treatment at 16-months and realized Lumenie couldn’t afford ongoing care, she quietly referred her to the Hope Walks partner clinic at HAH/Diquini. There Deborah had access to the highest quality care at no cost to her mom. 6

Treatment Hope Walks strives to treat all children born with clubfoot in each of the 16 countries we serve. That's nearly 22,000 kids each year. In Burundi, we were able to treat 453 kids or 77% of kids born with clubfoot in 2021. Likewise, in Rwanda we treated 66% (378 kids) of kids born with clubfoot and 51% (1066 kids) in Kenya. In all, 12 of our 16 countries increased the percentage of the population served in FY21.

LOOKING FORWARD Hope Walks had 136 clinics by the end of FY21 and anticipates adding 13 new clinics in Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Niger, Sudan, and Zambia in FY 2022.
Transportation Getting to the clubfoot clinic is often not easy for our families. Modes of transportation include bicycle, motorbike, bus, taxi, walking and even canoe! Our team has often told stories of families who simply couldn’t afford transportation to the clinic for free care. Providentially, prior to COVID, a family realized this same challenge and made a substantial gift to simply help our families get to the clubfoot care their children needed. With transportation worries out of the way, families are more likely to keep appointments, especially critical during the bracing stage when kids' feet are straight to make sure braces still fit and feet don’t relapse. 8
Team In FY21, we hired a new Latin America regional manager and promoted three staff to the level of regional manager in Africa. These individuals, along with our country staff and the US team, serve as the hands and feet of Christ as we work to end the burden of clubfoot and spread the gospel message. Christine Ngui | Africa Regional Manager “Hope Walks is one place everyone who loves children would wish to work. I like being part of the life-transforming work that happens within Hope Walks. I enjoy reading the success stories and seeing families getting united after the treatment. The work environment and the staff are amazing.”
Moutari Malam Saddi | Africa Regional Manager “Hope Walks offers me the opportunity as an ambassador of Christ to serve for the reconciliation of man with himself and with God, and I am so delighted to see children born with clubfoot grow up without disabilities.”
Jeffrey Simons | Latin America Regional Manager “I love working for Hope Walks because I get to make an impact on the lives of children, their families and nations. My team and I share the love of God by providing treatment for clubfoot and coming alongside families to listen, encourage and pray for them.”
Esperance Uwizeye | Africa Regional Manager “I work for Hope Walks because I feel comfortable with Hope Walks core values and I like serving children and their families. When I see the children born with clubfoot walking free of disability, I feel proud of my job because I contributed to improving the lives of these children.”

Training Hope Walks believes in the philosophy of “teaching a man to fish.” We empower national healthcare workers and local church leaders to help kids walk free from clubfoot. In FY21, Hope Walks conducted 21 clubfoot workshops where 245 healthcare providers were trained in either basic or advanced clubfoot treatment. Training and empowering indigenous leaders are essential for success and ongoing sustainability allowing us to continue serving even in the middle of a global pandemic. 10
