If you’re a soccer (or football) fan, it’s been an incredible summer watching the world’s best compete. Every kid dreams of stepping onto that pitch one day. But for children born with clubfoot, even taking their first steps can feel out of reach.
Yet, with early treatment, clubfoot is no barrier to greatness. Legendary players like Mia Hamm were born with clubfoot and still reached the absolute top of the sport.

healing on all fronts
Hubert in Burundi
Hubert’s family of farmers is a busy bunch. He has two older sisters, but none of the children are school age yet. When his parents, David and Zilfa, realized Hubert was born with clubfoot, they began to worry about the challenges of raising a child with this unfamiliar condition.
Encouraged by health practitioners and family members, the family sought treatment at a Hope Walks partner clinic in Burundi. Hubert began treatment immediately. The family was motivated to persevere through long weeks of treatment by seeing other clinic children whose feet were already corrected.
Beyond Hubert’s restoration, the family received guidance from their parent advisor that helped Zilfa discontinue her use of alcohol. David stood beside his family, encouraging healing on all fronts.
“We are very glad our child received treatment and are thankful to those who took care of him, because now we can see a significant change,” the family shared. “If we did not have people who supported us in treatment, we think he would have grown up with the disability.”
The first place she found hope Michael in Kenya
Michael’s mother arrived at the clinic carrying more than just her baby, she carried years of rejection, shame and heartbreak. A single mother raising four children with almost no income, she had been ridiculed by her community after Michael was born with clubfoot. Many told her his condition was a curse, leaving her feeling isolated and hopeless.
Everything began to change when she discovered a Hope Walks poster at a local health clinic and decided to seek help.
The weekly trips for casting weren’t easy. Transportation costs were a constant burden, and keeping Michael’s casts clean required sacrifices she could barely afford. But every visit brought something she hadn’t experienced in a long time: encouragement. Through the care and counseling of her Hope Walks parent advisor, she was treated with dignity, reminded that she was a loving mother and assured that Michael had a bright future.
When Michael’s feet were finally straightened, the tears she cried were no longer from shame—they were tears of joy.
