A Rummy Thing Called Betting Pathological gambling is a common disorder in which a person is unable to resist impulses to gamble, which can lead to severe personal or social consequences. It is of utmost importance that the whole family is involved in the rehabilitation of a pathological gambler at a family counseling center. The causes for pathological gambling usually begin in early adolescence in men, and between the ages 20 and 40 in women. People with this problem have a hard time resisting or controlling the impulse to gamble. Though pathological gambling is likely a different condition, it does share features of obsessive compulsive disorder. Common characteristics of someone with a gambling and betting would include: •Denying that they have a gambling issue. •Not having control over gambling/betting. •When family or friends are concerned and worried about such addicts. •Taking money meant for other things, but using it for betting instead. Symptoms to identify a gambling problem: Addicts with pathological gambling/betting problem often feel ashamed and often try to avoid letting other people know about their problem. The psychiatrists identify pathological gambling as having five or more of the following symptoms. •Feeling restless or irritable when trying to cut back or quit gambling. •Gambling to escape problems or feelings of sadness or anxiety. •Committing crimes to get money to gamble. •Gambling larger amounts of money to try to make up past losses. •Losing a job, relationship, education or career opportunity due to gambling. •Spending a lot of time thinking about betting, such as remembering past events or experiences or ways to get more money with which to gamble. •Needing to gamble larger amounts of money in order to feel excitement. •Needing to borrow money due to gambling losses. •Making many unsuccessful attempts to cut back or quit gambling. •Lying about the amount of time and money spent gambling.
