elcome to HOPE! What a blessing it is to be alive, having the opportunity to live out the possibilities and purpose of our lives. I’m so excited about this HOPE adventure that we are embarking on. The best part is that we are in it together.

I promise you will see yourself and how you fit in; I am her, but so are you!

We strive to inspire women to embody hope (which is only lasting through God), follow their own path, seek beauty in the ordinary and stay present and re-energized, while on the path of living a purpose-filled life!

Many of us have lived, at some point, without hope. Yet we survive each day and live the best we know how, making the “norm” a tolerable place to be. We dream within reach and we say, “I hope...” passively, just taking whatever the universe sends our way, without actively declaring and setting in motion practices and positive intentions to get the most out of life.

We are marveled at how God was attentive to our every need during our fall and how faithful He was to give us strength to rise again. We see and feel things differently on the way back on our feet, and almost like everything

dormant was shaken inside of us. We have this unleveled weight– made up of our dreams and promises from God, just ready to be unleashed!

Now we see through new lenses and are reimagined

women, wanting to push out of ourselves, the essence of whom God has called us to be every day.

If something is in you, God has placed it there for a reason.

Instead of constantly asking for new things, let us search and reach within– everything is already inside!

We are women who juggle all that life throws at us with dignity and grace. We are determined to not just exist in this world but to truly bask in the goodness from God that is all around us.

It doesn’t stop there though; we are creators, dreamers, believers– and we desire to be the very best versions of ourselves. Nothing less will do!

If you are that woman or want to become her, join us on this journey as we dissect hope, to bring to light new life and possibilities. See how our stories, our struggles, our successes, and our dreams (no matter what they are) when infused with hope can bring inspiration and fulfillment.

I

WE ARE IN THIS TOGETHER! t is with elation that I welcome you to the first issue of Hope the Magazine! Honestly, it is also with a sprinkle of pride. One of the many dreams of Hopes’ creator, Sidonie Walsh, this issue and the ones to come were curated for the bold, resilient, God-centered woman in the prime of her life, juggling many hats and in need of an honest, relatable space to reflect. The space we needed is the space we created and there is room for you.

HOPE Springs

Settling into this season of newness and possibilities is exciting. I have lists of long and shortterm goals: like finally finishing guitar lessons and writing that letter to a dear friend half-way across the world. But at the top of that list is the desire to nurture my relationship with God, from whom all good things come and who has asked us to remain steadfast and hopeful. We are called to trust God and expect that His promises and faithfulness will manifest in our lives with every new day.

Hope is Community What are we without community? Without solidarity? Disjointed, lonely wanderers piecing fragments together, wondering if the mirror reflects the same image to anyone else. This is why we created Hope the Magazine. Hope stories are your stories, told by women who have lived and are living through any season of life you are in. Our articles on Home-ties, Hair and Heart will help you plan dinner, your new hairstyle, reflect, and find hope. This issue, the ‘H’ issue, has an ‘H’ for everyone; laugh, cry and celebrate with us as you ask yourself "What’s my H"?.

FALL IN LOVE WITH HOPE

remember the first time I got prescription eyeglasses. I didn’t really know what to expect, beyond the fact that it should make me see things from afar. I was marveled though, when it was finally on my face. Everything around me was crisp, bold, and vibrant! I was in a whole new world– a cleaner, brighter and more beautiful one!

The newness and sudden wonder made me smile, and I felt so happy inside. I likened that feeling to hope.

Hope– ‘Having Only Positive Expectations’, has been my mantra for as long as I can remember.

It’s as natural as breathing, and just like air, it invades space and time, and I can’t help but share it. The way I see it, life can be filled with sobering moments where your faith and overall well-being can be challenged and weakened.

There is no reason to dwell or worry about these things.

What I have found is that this small word, and all it encompasses, is my anchor to stay strong and grounded– to weather the storms of life. I search for ways to fall in love with hope over and over again, and no matter how bad or good the situation, when we marry hope with the sheer magic of positive expectations, the day and the situation get even better!

So yes, I am the one who will buy flowers to lift my mood, rearrange the furniture to bring newness to my space, find every moment to celebrate— like hosting a ‘first day of Spring’ Brunch and the ‘last weekend of summer’ party.

I try my very best to control the excitement that comes with what’s next and savor the now.

This allows me to pay attention to the simple wonders that we often take for granted— like the way the trees dance on a windy day, the rich greenness of the grass, the intricate parts of a fresh bloom and marvel at the varying hues as the sun sets.

You see, those unspoken wonders have a way of leaving us speechless, they stir inspiration and gratitude on the inside. We are reminded of the greatness of God, how deliberate He is, how excellent His ways are, how majestic His creations are and just how much He loves us, that He put so much thought into our going out and our coming in.

He wanted it to be marvellous. No details spared for His children. He made sure that every day we live, we see hope. Fall in love with hope today, and watch everything around you get clearer, bolder and brighter!

INTERVIEW WITH ELLIE BEE’S OWNER KARA BERNIER *Why did you decide to start Ellie Bee bakery?

I knew I wanted to own a business since I was young, but I was never sure what to do. My grandparents owned a small, local business, and I spent so much time in their shop. Seeing them develop relationships over the years and watching my grandfather live out what he loved was a true privilege. After I realized what I loved to do, I launched a baking company to fulfill my passion.

*Do you have any words of advice for budding entrepreneurs?

My best advice would be that consistency is key. One piece of advice I have received that has encouraged me is 'hard work pays off'.

*Do you have any formal training that helped you on this journey or is this just all talent?

I have never had formal training as a baker, but have spent countless hours studying on my own and practicing to perfect the craft. I am still learning every day as things are constantly evolving and I'm learning from my mistakes as I go.

*What is your professional background? Is there anything that you’ve adopted that has instrumentally shaped your style or business practices?

My first job was for Starbucks and I credit them for so much for my personal and business development. I had a wonderful team that believed in me, trusted me, and helped me grow. As a young person, this gave me the confidence I needed to lead teams, serve people, and have a high standard for product quality.

*What is your inspiration? How do you come up with your designs?

I love knowing as much as possible about the client's event or party. Their textures, color scheme, flowers, balloons and even their gown if I'm doing a wedding. I always love seeing inspirational photos and incorporating their favorite elements into each design.

*What has been the most rewarding part of this journey?

The most rewarding part is to look back where I started and see the amazing growth and how much people have entrusted me [to help them] celebrate the most special times in their lives. Watching clients celebrate their wedding, gender reveals, baby showers and baby's first birthday and beyond has been incredibly rewarding for me. Having my daughter watch my dedication and commitment is equally rewarding- I hope it inspires her as she grows into the person she is meant to be and lives out what brings her the most joy.

HONESTY The sum of all fears: A self taught course in honesty

he truth is, I’m hiding from you. Your stare impairs me. Lord knows I’m not ready to confront you. You look at me with anticipation and that’s too heavy a burden for me to carry now..

More truth?

I’m restless, the promises I made to you all those years ago, the ones we agreed on just this morning, prey on my sleep. To avoid the disconcerting conversations, the ones I know will happen when I look into your eyes, I must avoid you and that breaks me. So here I am, afraid but resolute, parts in pieces, clutching shame and standing on regret, here I am... this is my course in honesty.

The mirror A decade and a half to answer for. The tears creep in when I think about the teenage girl filled with hope, bursting with enthusiasm, ‘I will conquer the world’. There was no doubt, none. I had everything I would ever need. A trailblazer they’d call me, I’d sweep in and my life, this life, would be an example, the classroom, the lesson they didn’t know they needed.

And as the decisions I made in pursuit of the greatness I was to achieve slowly stripped me of these dreams and ideals, I unknowingly walked into a friendship, one that would inform and frame the scenes ahead.

A dear friend I didn’t know how close we would become, to be frank, I didn’t know that we’d be so intimate, that the decisions I weighed and executed with confidence were really yours... friendship, a misnomer. I was trapped. I felt it in every aspect of my life, and I felt it because I believed that was how everyone around me saw what I considered failure...I was trapped in shame. I carried shame with me and included it in everything. When tasked with the burden of proof, I’d contended that everyone could see

how I was crumbling behind the ever-present smile; they could see me desperately clinging to fragments of hope, hope that I could salvage what was left. But they were kind.

They looked down when they looked at me; they were kind, they wouldn’t air their disappointment- but I could feel it.

As I stacked mistakes, shame and I grew closer until every reaction was painted by its shadow and I think now about how we shame others into behaviors we deem acceptable, and weaponize human error when the consequence is disdain. Disdain- I crowned my head with it, and now - now I would need to accept responsibility, pursue and claim accountability, without punishing myself and my relationships with the whip of shame.

The course I would need to be honest, and the first part of that was confronting myself. The goal of every human I’ve observed is to avoid pain, and embracing pain is the burden of the honest human. The insatiable desire for growth demands that I become emotionally literate, intentionally listening to the internal rumbles, expanding my emotional bandwidth, because truth be told, I’m in crisis. This is the best of me and the worst of me. I, me, this woman, owed it to that teenage girl, to take responsibility, to find the potential in myself and muster the courage to pursue it. So I go back to the beginning, the ‘who’ I’m hiding from, I’m hiding from myself and this is the upheaval- where I sit with the crown of shame, a past stained by human error; I sit with the tough conversation where I call my disdain and trade it for joy. Without the sense of foreboding; praying with honest abandon, learning how to rise with the journey, not from it. Casting off the armor- the need to protect myself from the discomfort that comes with

accountability, shunning perfectionism that is so deeply rooted in the fear of being hurt, the fear of not being seen, and being grateful for the ordinary moments.

If I am comfortable, I am not growing. If I can’t be uncomfortable with myself, I can’t be authentic in any relationship outside of this body. Owning my journey, loving myself through my journey, and finding meaning in what I produce is purpose.

In the end I tally, subtracting the attempts and relationships that failed, the pieces of me that have died and the pieces I surrendered hoping to get something better in return.

I divide the ways I made me smaller, the talents I haven’t used, the energy I expended on the things committed to, and the sum of all of that is left, when counted in fear is this... I wouldn’t have given birth to the dreams you [God] gave to me. Disappointing you is the sum of all my fears.

My purpose is to be prepared and available, to be a vessel for you to use. My purpose may look different as seasons change, but I am never without it. There must be a place where I yield, a place where contentment rises because my identity is made in your image.

I end with a quote from Theodore Roosevelt “It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows, in the end, the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.

he Drive In The closer I got, my anticipation grew. “An island in the middle of a neighborhood?”

I asked myself. But as I reached the end of the street, wondering why my GPS kept insisting I go straight, I checked it again, convinced I needed to go left or right- out of this wrong turn- to find this island. But as the doubts threatened to creep in, a playful breeze from beyond the lush foliage ahead tickled my face, drawing my attention to the gate ahead. That, sure enough, was the entrance to my destination. I was ushered in by the dancing banana leaves and palm trees towering overhead, and I just knew there was something serendipitous awaiting.

Only Grace Grace River Island Resort is nestled in a neighborhood in Ft. Myers and sits right along the Caloosahatchee River. The water stretches for miles into the horizon. Owners Mike and Karen, bought this place a few years ago, out of the desire to create a space where families can come together- to be locked away and connect with each other. At first, Mike's vision was focused on family reunions- but much of what they booked were weddings. And as they allowed God to lead, they soon discovered that weddings were the perfect occasion that brought families together. Many wedding parties would arrive a few days before and stay a few days after to relish the ambience.

It’s a one-stop-shop, with space for rehearsal dinners prior to the big event, down time to reset your mind and body, and plenty of space to play and truly enjoy the island and each

other. Mike and Karen couldn’t ignore that God orchestrated the events leading to them owning this property, and felt led to name it Grace. It is inspired by the scripture Ephesian 2 vs 8-9 (ASV), “For by grace have ye been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not of works.

That no man should glory.”

The Storybook The main white structure is elevated by the wooden wraparound deck giving the feel of a ballerina on her axis. The structure has large windows in every room that showcase bodies of water: from the pool or the surrounding river.

The grounds are truly something special and I understood right away why so many brides choose it as the magical destination to have their fairytale wedding.

Nooks and crannies around the island curated the magical feeling of being lost in a storybook, a mystical one where God’s handy work is on display. From the slender bamboo plants towering over seating areas throughout the island to draping willow trees inviting you to play. Every turn had me smiling- the serenity and the freedom to breathe deeply and just be.

They thought it a coincidence when they had the winning raffle ticket that made them the proud owner of a boat. They had no desire to own a boat, but it was on that very boat one afternoon, where they saw the ‘for sale’ sign on a large secluded property along the river, the property they now call Grace River Island.

Karen thinks back to the series of events leading to them owning the property and sees God in every moment. If it wasn’t for a book that they had read, that challenged them to think bigger, she would not have even called the phone number on the ‘for Sale’ sign. She would have said that it was way out of her league. But she boldly called the number, not knowing how everything would work out.

That was the start of something great, something God was doing in them. Mike remembers sharing his vision with banks- to have the property with the Airbnb concept, where families would come together and have a place all to themselves to reconnect. All the banks declined, and when he was down to the wire with no options left, he got a call from one bank that loved the concept and decided to

finance them.

God allowed them to see how He works. They stepped out in faith, and not only did they get the property, but God has given them 20/20 vision to look back and see the events He aligned that made this possible. They are marveled and humbled at the grace they’ve been shown.

State of Sanctification It is commonly known that Grace is a free and unmerited favor of God. According to Webster's dictionary, it is also the state of sanctification enjoyed through divine assistance. If you ever have the pleasure of meeting Mike and Karen, you can tell that they are enjoying that state of sanctification.

They take great pride in the property, the grounds are immaculate and they maintain it to perfection. They are still in awe of this blessing, and they have not forgotten the grace shown to them. They believe this Island belongs to God and they are custodians. Mike said, “this property is not ours and it will not go to our children. We are just here until God tells us otherwise.”

Their humility and selflessness are admirable. They raise

HOPE THE MAGAZINE money, as well as volunteer on international missions. Some overseas missions include: building churches, training pastors and sponsoring children all over the world. They use every opportunity to give back and live in their calling.

Mike recalls when they first moved to their home, for Karen’s birthday, she invited all her new neighbors to a party, giving a presentation of their mission and asking them to donate to one of the causes as a gift. Her new neighbors were touched, and they exceeded the goal. Mike and Karen have also raised their children to do the same. They recalled their son donating money that he could have kept; instead he sponsored a child in a 'third world' country. They were very proud because he did this on his own accord.

The drive out As I drove away from Grace River Island, I felt a tug or a charge of some sort that I could not process for a while.

Through all the euphoric feelings, the beauty, bliss, and tranquility of the Island, I still had this feeling.

Karen and Mike’s story of acquiring Grace had so many serendipitous moments- too many to even cover in this article.

I know that part of what I was feeling was connected to how removed they were from the thrills around them and how focused they were on their calling. They were committed to spreading the Gospel and furthering their various God given causes, willing to do whatever it took. They mentioned a few years ago, going to Egypt during the period of unrest, to ask permission from a Muslim mayor to build a church in the area. They had to be escorted by armed officers and travel through the dangerous streets, yet they did and were granted the permission needed.

It’s easy to get distracted by all the happenings around us. More so, it is easy to be desensitized by the many atrocities and outages- focusing on our own selfish ambitions and desires, which ultimately leave us without direction and hope.

I needed to pay attention, to make sure I don’t get distracted by the things that do not matter. This realization— another explanation for the tug that I was feeling, and the magnetic pull that brought me to the Island.

But more than anything it was the Heart of Grace that drew me in. The values of family and togetherness that Grace reaffirmed, and God’s love to give unto his children what they do not even qualify for, in such an overwhelming way leaving them in a state of sanctification, determined to make their Master proud. There is something indescribable that happens when one has an encounter with God’s grace. One thing that’s for sure is that fervent hope springs forth, reminding us that there is something bigger than you and I.

HARD TRUTH

T

ough times don’t last, tough people, do! So is the title of a 1984 book by Dr. Robert H. Schuller and the mantra I live by! It’s why I embrace the road less travelled, the one filled with weeds and grown over bushes and danger lurking. What I now believe wholeheartedly is that it is after enduring some of the toughest times that the rainbow, the sunshine and the beauty of God’s wondrous hands can reveal itself. God told Jeremiah, “For I know the plans I have for you, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope” (Jeremiah 29:11). It is a reassuring journey when you know that God is Lord of your life and in control every step of the way.

Hardship is severe suffering, so why would one deliberately choose to put themselves in a situation to be uncomfortable, distressed or otherwise endure anything unpleasant? Because it is by making the hard decisions and choosing the hard path that you actually have the opportunity to prove God (Romans 1: 17).

Let me use my career as an example... A few years ago there was an opportunity to go on a middle manager work exchange program and I selected to go to South Africa. Actually I selected Nigeria but Corporate was a bit worried about sending a lone 30-year-old woman so they strongly encouraged me to consider South Africa if I insisted on going so far! I did. For the first 90 days it was misery! I was a “superstar” with my company back home and here I was feeling like nothing I did was of value to the business.

As you begin to “elect” hardship in your life (I could have just stayed in Jamaica and continued to be a superstar), you notice that just because you chose it, it doesn’t make it easy.

Nevertheless, when it was really going downhill on my new overseas assignment I decided to talk to my new boss. I told him how I was feeling and how my career ambition seemed to be slipping away and I felt my contribution was not significant.

He was understanding and gave me some frank advice!

He let me know that I would need to actually take on more responsibility and not hide behind doing what I know if I ever wanted to be taken seriously.

So, as tough as it was, I did! Twenty months later, I left South Africa as the Queen of White Spirits, Ready to Drink and Rum (so they dubbed me) and was awarded the Managing Director Award for “Restless and Agile” delivery. I was so glad that I was determined to be an overcomer.

Soon after returning home, I was offered an executive position at one of the most prominent companies in Jamaica.

“The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord” (Psalm 37:23). I could also say, “All things work together for good to them that love God and are called according to His purpose” (Romans 8: 28). That South Africa stint set me on an upward path and I thank God for holding my hand, giving me divine insight and foresight so I could shine instead of giving up. I also thank Him for the people He allowed to come into my life in timely and relevant times.

At the time of writing this I’m in the middle of yet another tough overseas career transition, but this time with my two-year-old daughter in tow, and I can tell you... keep your eyes on the prize because it is easy to be distracted.

This job is another story of God ‘opening doors for me that no man can shut’ (Revelations 3: 8 - 9)! When you are in Christ, God has us where we are for a purpose, and purpose cannot fail because we are pre-ordained to fulfill our designated role in life. If you are feeling overwhelmed, challenge yourself, cling to HOPE, and remember, tough times NEVER last, but tough people do!

WHERE IS YOUR HAPPINESS FOUND? By: Kathleen Denis-Frankenstein

I

don’t know that I have ever really thought of happiness in terms that most others might. Asking or wondering if I was happy was never a question that seemed to matter. Not as a child and not as an adult. As unimaginable as that might seem, I never really aspired to be happy. I wanted to be a good mother, a good person, a good daughter, a good sister, a good Christian and even a good wife... However, those things simply did not occur to me.

Happiness is something that we should instinctively understand, right? However, do we really? Do we understand or really know what it means to be happy? In preparing for this article, I was compelled to look up the definition of happiness. Webster’s dictionary defines happiness as “a state of well-being and contentment: joy.” It also defines happiness as being “a pleasurable or satisfying experience” or “good fortune.” Most would gravitate towards the definition of happiness as being a satisfying experience. Those blissful moments, or periods in our lives where we are elated, and all seems to go well. Very few would describe happiness as mere contentment.

Most recently, I have come to embrace happiness as just that, being content. It is this stable, unchanging state in my life. My circumstances may change, but my happiness or joy will not. I may have sorrow today, but it does not define the totality of my life. I can choose to see things as I am feeling or as they could be. I can choose to focus on my temporary situation, or on the assurance of things to come (combination of faith & hope) even in the darkest of nights, the stars still shine. Circumstances can often skew our perspective because our focus is on the present situation instead of the truth of what we know.

Have you ever looked at a cloudy sky before the rain or storm?

Although you might not see the sun, does not change the fact that the sun is still there. The idea of perfect happiness or bliss, which is often linked to our moods and feelings, is flawed.

It is short-lived and often elusive. The most significant epiphany that I have had pertaining to happiness is that my joy is derived from who I am and Whose I am. I can be happy because, “neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to

separate me from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus.”

Rom. 8:38-39.

That is the truth that defines my happiness. I am loved by a God, who says that no matter what happens or where I am, He will never leave me nor forsake me. I am happy because no matter where I am, I know where I belong.

I know I am loved beyond all things and beyond all measure. A fact that can never be taken from me.

No matter the circumstances of my life, the state of my relationships, marriage, friendships, family, I can be happy.

For “I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation,” whether I have or not, whether the world accepts me or not, whether I have failed or not, whether I love myself or not, whether rejected or not, whether I feel it or not, I am accepted, loved, and taken care of.

This unchanging truth means that I can rise above my reality. I can set my sights and my mind on the things above. Because I have love, I have joy. As a result, I can dream, I can risk, I can do. I am free to be.

Being fully known and loved by the One who created me and calls me His own is my happiness. It is the hope that fuels my drive, colors my lenses, and paints my tomorrow with golden hues of exceedingly more than I could ever ask or dream. He is my treasure and my heart. Whatever may lie before me, whatever temporary suffering or pain

I might face, is nothing in comparison to the Heaven that has been promised to me.

Happiness is a choice. As Proverbs 23:7 says, “as a man thinks, therefore he is.”Therefore, if I think that I have a reason to be happy, then regardless of what anyone says or the situation, I am going to be happy. Our situation does not determine our happiness. We do.

There are those for whom no matter how grim the circumstance, they see the beauty in what has been given to them. They choose happiness. In contrast, there are those who seemingly have the world at their feet and yet happiness eludes them. The differentiator is choice.

I can find happiness in whatever I do. When I am being a good neighbor, a good friend, creating the right environment for those around me, whether at home or in the workplace. Living and loving with purpose. My happiness is knowing that I am fully immersed in the abundant life that I was created to live.

For, where your hope is found there your happiness will be also. May your hope be grounded “on things above and not on earthly things.” Col. 3:2.

Therefore, only one question remains, where is your hope?

“We can find happiness in whatever we do and wherever we are.”

m in the McDonald’s drive-thru again, for the third time this week. “It's only coffee,” I tell myself as I shifted uncomfortably in my seat. I get to work exhausted from hours of assignments and family duties the night before, but that bowl of chocolate at the front desk and that ice- cold RedBull is the perfect cocktail to get me through the day.

Irritable and tired, I walked out of work, anticipating the long night ahead of me, before I have to get up and do it all over again. I was burnt out, weak and exhausted all the time. I was dealing with stress and stressed about handling my stress.

I was a member of “Team Fit”! A group of friends I used to work out with 6 days, yes I said 6 days a week and loved it!

I was pretty healthy then, without the diet. Speaking of diets, I heard vegans are the healthiest and a diet like that would give me the clearest mind and the best skin. What about the Keto diet that’s all over social media? All my favorite influencers look amazing and happy. My thoughts even went as far as liposuction; all my problems would go away in one appointment. I’m getting older and I can feel that things are different. I had to do something permanent, and it had to be realistic. It had to suit me and my life. You see, in a moment of thought, I realized that I am always quick to doubt myself, give up, and disregard my needs. Then I thought about my possessions, my car; I never buy low-grade gas, I hate it when it gets messy on the inside and I’m happiest when it’s shiny on the outside. I treat my car better than I treat

myself... my car! Why am I not picky with my food, why am I not wearing a shiny smile or attitude towards life, and why am I not keeping my mind free of clutter and confusion? It was then I truly realized that health is a balance of the mind, body and soul; all connected.

I needed to treat myself better, and ‘be kind to myself’ became my mantra. I started by shamelessly working out every day, even it was only 20 jumping jacks before my evening shower, but I counted it a win. I steadily increased my time and intensity, enlisted family members to workout with me in my garage for support, and on the days I couldn’t muster the strength, I was kind to myself and rested. As much as I worked out, I was still far from an Instagram model and that was okay. Then I challenged myself to 3 days at a time, to remove excess sweets, include more veggies in my meals, and eat smaller portions. Slowly I began to enjoy the beautiful colors of fruits and veggies in every meal I prepared, and I remembered thinking after my meals how different I felt.

I was satisfied, but not as overly stuffed as I’ve often felt before. But what about my Pepsi problem? Solved it by sharing my can every day with my coworker to both our benefits and at home I was sure to stock up on miniatures.

I was missing other key pieces, however, my mental and spiritual health. I had to learn to say no sometimes, to lighten

my load, ask for help, take a day off from work or even take a longer shower. I would still be a good mom, wife, employee and friend. I had to realize that I can only be a better me when I was kind to myself and sensitive to my own needs.

I also began carving time in the mornings; small but oh so significant moments to be thankful and to hear the words of God, my Creator. I also became notorious at stoplights for leading my own praise and worship as I commuted to and from work; it gave me so much light and joy that things that

seemed so bad or difficult crumbled with the thought of the song in my heart.

Now I know I will have difficult days and I won’t always make the healthiest choice. What I do know is that health is a balance and a process and if I am gentle with myself and set realistic goals, I will achieve them. As you find your way on your own journey, defining your version of health, I challenge you to be kind to yourself too.

Why not go ‘Cold Turkey’ like most do when trying to lose weight?

I’ve definitely tried that method in the past, and while I had results, they were short lived. You see, I love rising to a challenge and I will give everything to succeed. However over the years, I realized that giving everything to meet that goal ultimately created a state of deprivation, which would lead me right back to where i started. In order to make a lasting change, I decided to take things slowly and go at a more realistic pace, moving away from the bad habits and eventually not needing those things anymore.

Which exercises work for you? And what are some helpful resources for workout plans?

Personally I enjoy cardio exercises. It’s so easy to go for a brisk walk, run or just simply get up and dance! If i really want to get results HIIT is it. Youtube has so many videos that are free and available from so many different persons that it is impossible not to find one that suits you and your goals.

How often do you exercise, and for how long?

At this point in my journey starting over, my personal goal

is to simply be active for a minimum of 30 consecutive minutes per day. I do schedule actual workout sessions 3 days each week which last on average 45 minutes to an hour. A tip I have for you is to get connected with others on your journey, you will be surprised how motivated you get to work out more often and for longer periods when others can see your activity level on your fitbit or apple watch.

A sample of what I eat in a day.

Breakfast: Lowfat yogurt with fresh berries and granola or oatmeal Snacks: Fresh fruit, nuts, granola bar, popcorn, Lunch: steamed veggies, rice and grilled salmon Dinner: chicken breast and veggies Do you have any rules/practices regarding food?

Currently I have the following guidelines: -No meals after 7pm -Largest meal during the day (breakfast or lunch) -Drink a gallon of water daily -Limit dairy products -Snack healthy (fruits and nuts)

-Eat smaller portions (try a salad plate instead of a dinner plate sometimes) Do you devote time to meal prepping? If yes, tell us about the process.

I do not meal prep in the typical fashion; it just doesn’t work for me. Something about a refrigerator filled with containers of food cooked days in advance just does not work. The way I “prep” is to plan the meals I will cook for the week in advance and shop based on that plan. The most crucial part is taking my lunch to work each day and packing a nice balance.

Was asking for help an important part of your mental health journey? If yes, was asking for help a challenge?

Absolutely! I always felt that my challenges were my own to bear, but what I have learned is it’s important to accept help just as it is to help others. It’s important to be strong, but it takes more strength to acknowledge that you need support and to ask for it. We are all one stressor away from a mental health crisis, so it is crucial that we self monitor and be okay with not being okay sometimes, because in acknowledging these moments we can learn how to effectively work through them.

W

hatever we think and do repeatedly over an extended period is called a habit. We operate in habits daily without realizing we are even doing them. They are ingrained in our daily lives from the way we wake up, what we eat, what we watch, when we sleep, and so on.

God, our creator, is the Master of Habits. God is faithful, steadfast, committed and makes promises to us and fortunately for us, He has a good habit of keeping His promises.

My life has taught me 7 lessons that have helped me to develop new habits in the season of my life I needed them the most.

One such habit is that of working out, getting fit, staying in shape and being active. I had the blessing of my mom introducing sports to my brother and I at an early age.

She fostered an environment of ensuring physical activities stayed in our schedule. We were given the ability to choose our sport and what we chose; we had to stick with it.

• Habit Tip #1: Get in the right environment. Your environment elevates or eradicates you.

At age 4, I was introduced to swimming, and I fell in love. I even qualified for and represented my school teams in both prep and high school. I even picked up other sports along the way, starting badminton in High School as well. I really started liking sports.

• Habit Tip #2: Habits compound. Once you start & get consistent with one habit, you can add another.

ONE SUCH HABIT IS THAT OF WORKING OUT, GETTING FIT, STAYING IN SHAPE & BEING ACTIVE. My habits followed me as I went away to study in Cuba.

There was no pool on campus, so I had to find alternatives. I had a friend who loved to run. I hate running; we had access to a huge track on campus. So I decided to just try.

• Habit Tip #4: Be willing to Try. We coordinated schedules and checked in with each other to ensure we got our workouts done every week. We even had backup plans to do workout videos in the dorm room on those rainy days.

• Habit Tip #5: Find an accountability partner to help you keep going.

My friend would easily do 10-15 laps around the track. I, on the other hand, struggled to complete one. But I never gave up. I would first– speed walk, then added a little jogging.

Eventually, I got stronger and faster. After some months I was able to complete 10 laps.

• Habit Tip #6: Start with achievable goals and keep increasing them as you go along.

When I became a teenager, especially being a girl, I started getting more self and body-conscious. So the blessing of consistently staying active allowed me to stay slim and lean, so that became added motivation to keep at it.

When I graduated and returned home, I registered at a gym to stay active. But then life happened. I tragically lost my cousin and overworked myself to mask the pain. I kept this up until the day I had a panic attack that landed me at the hospital. The doctor encouraged me to start working out again to help me manage. So I began again.

• Habit Tip #3: Find a strong why. A reason for sticking to the habits.

• Habit Tip #7: Don’t be afraid to start again, as often as you need to. Life is not a sprint, it’s a marathon. Just keep going.

As I continued with the gym, I found myself in an unhealthy cycle of only working out to look good for an upcoming event. This continued until my wedding in 2019, where I dropped 20 pounds in 7 weeks to fit into the dress and looked amazing. Shocking reality, I have not been back to the gym since then. New marriage, life adjustments, shared time... and the list of excuses goes on. In 2020 I finally made an attempt to resume, but 1 week later, the pandemic hit.

Now, locked inside, socially distancing, riddled with fears, doubts, uncertainties... you name it, I felt it and what you feel determines what you do. My response to all that looked like being unproductive, not focusing, not working out, overeating and not sleeping properly, all of which resulted in weight gain and overwhelm.

Then one day, one of my favorite prayers came to mind, “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can and wisdom to know the difference.” So I wised up and put the pandemic and my life in the hands of the all-knowing, all-powerful God, and I braved up to focus on things I could control.

How would I go about doing this?

My life left me a clear blueprint, and I used it.

• #4: TRY. I was willing to give it a shot.

• #3: STRONG WHY. I wanted increased energy, more focus, happy hormones, improved sleep.

• #1 RIGHT ENVIRONMENT. I filled my kitchen with healthier foods & purchased a skipping rope.

• #7: START AGAIN. I gave myself grace & moved at my pace.

• #6: ACHIEVABLE GOAL. I used to do 90mins a day, but

now just 30mins with a simple activity I love.

• #5: ACCOUNTABILITY PARTNER. I led the start in a business leadership group and now everyone has started their fitness journey once more.

• #2: HABITS COMPOUND. I added more time, more days & more activities to my workout with time.

Needless to say, I am feeling amazing, motivated, stronger, encouraged, empowered, focused, energized and confident, that I can do hard things If I just try. Now I have momentum and growth in business, I sleep better; I am happier and expectant about some amazing things. Most importantly, I trust myself because I made a decision and followed through with it. If I can trust me, certainly God can trust me.

Now I confidently take on the Purpose He has called me to and walk with great hope towards the future He has promised. I still slip up, I am far from a master at this, but I review my 7 tips and ask God to help me each day to continue on this path, to give me strength for the workout and to be with me as I try. He has never let me down, and He won’t let you down.

You got this! I am excited to find that I have the power through Christ who gives me strength to create new habits, and so can you!

ell if Home is your H, you are in for a treat! This section is all things home because home is truly where the heart is! The place/people that accept me at my simplest and purest self; no additives necessary, just natural unadulterated me. Like armor, I put on the acceptable layers to step into the world following the status quo. The truth is, the only way leaving home is tolerable is because I have it (my state, my place and my people) to come back to. I get to walk back in and kick off my shoes, unclasp my watch and free my wrist, strip my neck and my ears of the moving trinkets. I unhook my bra, loosen the grips from my hair, rinse the dirt and paint from my face and return to my lightest state— my purest form— home; and know that I am loved for it.

Home and Harmony By: Renata Powell

A home is defined by what you want it to be. We have an eclectic mix of ideas and sometimes those ideas work and sometimes they are not fully formed. Home should have a shape that can be touched, smelled, heard, tasted and felt in the deepest parts of your heart. You should be able to smile at the thought of being home; your space should represent peace.

My home is my sanctuary. It is my sacred space. The feeling I created in my home touches on all my senses. Sometimes, I sit on my couch just to take it all in. The quiet, the smell of sweet plug-ins, the décor all create the feeling of peace. I love my home, not because of the possession within it, but the feeling that I am blessed. Not lucky, but blessed.

- Albert Einstein Harmony, balance, equilibrium and steadiness. Synonyms of my personality and zodiac sign - Libra. I am always looking for the balance between my life and myself. Often we forget the beauty of the process.

“We cannot see the forest for the trees”- John Haywood. What a beautiful saying. Take the galaxy for instance. You have seen so many pictures of swirling stars and gases. It is a swirl of color, metals and so many elements yet, in the chaos, is order. Find the beauty in your chaos by finding meaning in the process of figuring out your life. Find your peace and balance, how you define it. The scripture says, “Let us, therefore, follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another”- Romans 14:19. You do not have to explain anything to anyone and the only person it needs to make sense to is you. Others will likely follow and gravitate towards you because of the beauty and harmony that you created for yourself.

HOME SHOULD BE THE FEELING YOU WANT TO MANIFEST AND MAKE TANGIBLE. I am intentional about who comes into my space and the energy they carry/emit. I want nothing to desecrate the peace and happiness that I have found. It was a labor of love in organizing every room and adding décor. I remember envisioning myself once I completed my living room; I wanted to lie on my couch with a glass of wine and a good book.

That was my dream and vision for my home. My living room and bedroom are my two favorite spaces. When I open the door and breathe in deeply, I always have this feeling of “Ah, it’s good to be home.”

One tool that I really appreciate is Pinterest. Pinterest is a free visual tool that can inspire you with many ideas. You can explore colors and styles and mix and match to make it your own. Styles like Shabby Chic, Farmhouse, Minimalist and Modern Chic. I believe you can find what you want in a myriad of places to fit your budget. Places like Ross, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Good Will (DIY projects) or consignment shops, which often have many treasures. Look for pieces that have longevity and make you smile. Can you see yourself looking at that piece every day? If the answer is yes... then you’ve found a winner. Never accept anything less than the best! If you had the power to transform your total home space, what would it look like? If you cannot do the entire house, what space could you transform just for you? Do you want to meditate in your space, create in your space, write in your space, or sleep in your space? What feeling do you want to invoke?

Home should be the feeling you want to manifest and make tangible. Start thinking about words that describe your home now and if they match your dream and ideal sentiments. If they do not; recognize that you are at the beginning of making a change, one that is worth exploring, so that your home is a place of respite and replenishment. That is what I hope for you in defining what home should mean.

Proverb 24:3 "Through wisdom is a house built, and by understanding it is established". I am grateful for the blessings that God has brought to my life, and I recognize I would not have a home or harmony without his divine intervention and grace. I am blessed, you are blessed. In God there is a home, in God there is peace/harmony. He can give you wisdom and understanding, and it is through Him that I am blessed. As Psalm 23 states that 'The Lord is your shepherd you will not want'. Ask Him for guidance and actively work toward a home rooted in harmony.

The sound of something sizzling on the grill, the velvety cream cheese icing on your fingertips, the journey your mouth takes on the first sip of Merlot, the aromas from the kitchen that seduce your sense of smell and leave you in blissful anticipation, the pure joy that comes when you feast your eyes on your favourite dish.

It’s poetry, the kind I recite daily. This love affair has taken me on a journey through many kitchens, the most important being my own.

Water Brown sugar Granulated sugar Lemons Mint leaves Ginger

Fruit of your choice: Cranberry Pineapple Strawberry

• In a deep pot on medium heat, add 3 cups of water, 1.5 cups of brown sugar and 1.5 cups of granulated sugar. Bring to boil and stir until sugar dissolves (simple syrup).

• In the same pot, add 5 cups of water and half a cup of ginger (sliced for easy removal) bring to a boil.

• Once boiled, set sugar and ginger mixture aside to cool

• Muddle Mint, slice fruit and add to pitcher (48oz or larger )

• Add sugar and ginger mixture to the pitcher • Add the juice of 5 Lemons (we like it tart) Stir and enjoy!

Pro-tip: add a splash of Amaretto, Gin or Vodka for a grown-up twist!

VEGGIE FRITTATA YOU WILL NEED: • • • • • • • • • •

Chopped veggie of choice: Broccoli Spinach Mushrooms Tomatoes Bell peppers 6-8 Eggs Half and half Onion and Garlic powder Salt and pepper Shredded cheese of your choice

• Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter or spray muffin pan and set aside.

• In a bowl, combine eggs, 3 tablespoons of half and half,

1/4 tsp garlic and 1/2 tsp onion powder. Season with salt and pepper to taste and mix.

• In a small pan, pre-cook veggies leaving them slightly

underdone. Be sure to add veggies that need more cook time first-like broccoli, mushroom and bell peppers. Add veggies like spinach last.

• Combine veggies and cheese with egg mixture.

• Fill muffin cups 3/4 of the way full. Bake at 350 for 17-20

minutes Enjoy!

SHRIMP TOSTONES YOU WILL NEED: • • • • • • • • •

1-2 large green plantains 1/2 lb medium uncooked, deveined shrimp Tomato/Marinara sauce Sugar Onion and garlic powder Salt and pepper 1/2 lemon Basil Light Olive oil

Shrimp and sauce:

• Wash shrimp with lime juice. Season with onion powder, garlic powder, salt and pepper.

• Add Olive oil to a medium frying pan and sauté shrimp for 3 minutes on

either side.

• To a small saucepan, on low heat, add Marinara/tomato sauce along with

spices (salt, pepper, garlic and onion powder and sugar for taste.)

Green Plantain:

• Add a generous amount of oil to a large frying pan on medium heat.

• Slice plantains 1-inch thick and fry on medium-high heat for 2 minutes on either side.

• Remove from heat, use tostones press or the bottom of a saucer to flatten, re-fry for 1 minute.

(For added crispiness and flavor, combine 1/2 tsp each of onion powder and salt, and a splash of vinegar to 1/2 cup of water). Dip flattened plantains in this mixture and pat dry before re-frying.

• Remove plantains from frying pan and plate.

• Top each plantain with shrimp and sauce.

• Garnish with basil and sea salt.

Voila!

PIZZA MARGHERITA YOU WILL NEED: • • • • • • •

Multi-colored cherry tomatoes Fresh Basil Fresh Mozzarella Pizza dough Marinara sauce Olive Oil Salt and pepper

• Flatten pizza dough with rolling pin or wine bottle (to desired thickness- ours is 1/8-inch thick)

• Brush dough with Olive oil • Cover the face of the dough with marinara

sauce

• Top with halved tomatoes and mozzarella

slices

• Sprinkle salt/pepper to taste and bake at

425F/220C for 15-18 minutes.

• Finish with fresh Bail leaves (whole or

chopped)

I

was about twelve or thirteen years old the first time I made a meal by myself. My older sister tricked me into doing it. I remember the day like it was yesterday.

She told me our mother said it was my turn to cook.

I had never cooked anything before, and to that, she responded, “well it’s about time you learned,” and walked away. I panicked for a minute, then remembered all those days I spent watching my mother and God-mother in the kitchen. Tonight, Curried Chicken was on the menu, one of my favorite meals. I was familiar with the steps but had never attempted them. I started with the chicken. I didn’t know why, but my mom always washed it in vinegar and water, so I did the same. I seasoned the chicken and put it to the side. I went through the process so meticulously and carefully; I wish I had that kind of patience today.

The meal was a success! Right after I finished, I had to leave for church. I remember coming home to an empty pot.

Everyone had seconds and didn’t realize I hadn’t eaten.

At first, I was upset, but then I felt so proud that everyone enjoyed my meal. From then on Curried Chicken was my specialty, and to this day it’s still my favorite, and no matter where I am in the world my mom and sister make sure to send the curry seasoning so I can prepare it. They keep me stocked up.

Not having access to the ingredients always reminds me how far I am from home. A little Ackee and Saltfish with fried dumpling in the morning and Curried Chicken and white rice in the evening takes me right back to Jamaica. I put some reggae music on while I’m in the kitchen, dancing with my girls and having a good time. Connecting them to their culture is so important to me. I’m a proud Jamaican, and I wear it like a badge of honor, and I want them to be proud of it too. I take every opportunity to do so. Cooking and eating traditional Jamaican dishes keeps me connected to my home. It’s easy to share and who doesn’t love Jamaican food.

Food brings people together, and at every potluck, I am sure to bring a traditional dish. It has become a staple in my workplace, and they look forward to it. I feel good knowing I can share a piece of home with them, even if it’s just for a moment. I’ve made long-lasting friendships through sharing recipes and spices. When I can’t find a Jamaican community where I am, I create my own by bringing people together with food.

Here Again For many of us, traveling, moving around freely, visiting places we love and curating unforgettable experiences have definitely slowed this past year.

t never gets old to witness the Master Orchestrator at work! The honor felt to behold His gifting of a vision and Him so lovingly and precisely guiding it through the entire journey. Along the lonely roads, through the meandering hills, down in the sobering valleys, sending signs along the way to guide the course, and then one day... Voila!

Almost without warning, the lonely road bends so deliberately, gliding down the slope at the perfect angle, unveiling a beauty so indescribable, a promise so undeniable and a vision oh so unrelenting and awe-inspiring, making the journey one worth traveling over and over again. The vision, when realized, will blow your mind because it is so much more spectacular than the initial glimpse.

It is seasoned; it is matured; it is ready to be unleashed in the world.

My wish is that HOPE the Magazine has inspired you to see yourself as God’s gift and his work within you as His Masterpiece. Don’t take his gifts for granted, use them, because the truth is that only good gifts come from Him. Whatever He’s placed on our inside infuse hope and it will have new meaning.

A brighter picture and its blessings are far-reaching and cannot be quantified, because how can you measure the glory of God? It has truly been a pleasure spreading hope. Thank you for coming along for the ride. Don’t be afraid to take the path less traveled, make sure God is in the midst and hang on tight, beyond the horizon and even along the way, you may find the magnificent ocean meeting the road, bringing with it a glimmer of possibilities and overflowing hope!
