The Boy Who Hates Everything is a “Devised” play (i.e., we created it from scratch) with the help of composer and lyricist Nathan Streifel. The play explores family, self-discovery, and grief through a hero’s journey.

Our inspiration came from various sources, including an African fable, French news stories, an Italian Renaissance painting, and a can of soup in the rehearsal room. We also incorporated inspiration from French Farce and French New Wave cinema by incorporating theatrical versions of split screens, montages, and freeze frames.

It’s been truly thrilling to witness the growth of a piece as it evolves from a simple collection of ideas, performances, improvisations, and writings.

What amazes me most is the boundless creativity and fearlessness of the cast and our production team, who joyfully dive in, ready to take artistic risks. We hope you enjoy The Boy Who Hates Everything and go with us on a fantastical odyssey of our lead character, Desmond, who is stuck in his current situation. Perhaps he needs a shift in perspective that allows him to view the world through a fantastical lens and embrace the magic that surrounds him.
