2020 HCA GRATITUDE REPORT

A Message From

Kelly Grill, Executive Director Did you ever imagine HCA would be what it is today? I get this question constantly. The privilege of hearing your stories leads me to always answer “yes.” You are the reason HCA is such a special space and community a decade later. You have touched my heart with your personal stories of resilience, of joy, of friendship through the arts. Some stories come from grateful parents whose shy child was encouraged by a caring director to shine on stage in their own way. Others are gallery conversations with an aspiring potter who faithfully attends open studio each week to find community gathered round the kiln.

Still more stories come from a grateful dance scholarship recipient who cannot put into words how your generous support has made their dream possible. It is an exciting time indeed at HCA, one of growth, new dreams and possibilities, as we look to 2022, made stronger by you as a cherished member of the HCA family. Your drawings and songs and movement are the heartbeat of the HCA. This gratitude report is our love song to you for all you do to support MetroWest’s vibrant artistic gem. From the bottom of my heart, thank you! Gratefully, Kelly Grill Executive Director

OVID cannot stop HCA guitar instructor and musician Jack Byrne’s gig calendar from filling up the first Friday of each month.

As the host of the popular “First Friday Open Mic” Byrne says he has never been prouder of how his students are transitioning to online performing during COVID. “I had no idea what to expect and neither did they, I’m sure, but their positive attitudes and open mindedness have made the last several months so much easier than they could have been,” said Byrne. “So thank you to all my students! You’re all rock stars!” He credits the amazing community of regular performers for fostering an experience where people of all ages can share in the joy and healing power of music “Even now that we can’t meet in person, we still do the open mic on Facebook Live, and it’s been amazing seeing people from all over the country get to watch and participate!,” said Byrne.

JACK BYRNE | MUSICIAN, INSTRUCTOR

“Music brings people together, which is more important now than ever, so I’m so grateful to keep being a part of our Open Mic at the HCA.”

Your caring heart helped the HCA meet the challenges of COVID head on by bringing the joy of art making and art viewing to people’s homes. Thank you!

ometimes all you need is a sign. For Hopkinton resident Jen Dadagian, it was down the road.

“One day I started seeing signs outside of the HCA promoting their new ceramics program,” Dadagian said. “I think the stars aligned—HCA was just starting their program, and I was ready for a new challenge—so I signed up.” Working in the creative process at a regional branding and design agency, Dadagian is not new to the creative process. Yet for her, launching into pottery making was unchartered territory. “The creative and technical process need to come together—the goal is to improve in both areas with practice over time.” In fact, her work in hand building was recently awarded “most functional mug” in a student competition hosted by SKUTT at the National Council on Education in the Ceramic Arts. Above all, Dadagian values how the studio is a place for everyone regardless of where they are on life’s journey and regardless of their ability. “The sense of community that’s been created over the last four years is undeniable. We talk about our families, our work, our worries. We share stories, laughs and celebrate our ceramic successes as they emerge from the glaze kiln.”

The Teaching Artist

T

he actor’s studio can still delight and surprise veteran performer and teacher Jere Shea.

Shea, a Tony-nominated actor and HCA’s director of acting and musical theater, often finds himself learning so much from his students during scene work. “My students are always showing me new ways to think about acting and performance—always showing me that there is more than one way to experience a moment or to express a thought,” said Shea, a Hopkinton resident who became involved at HCA with his family when the campus was built. “It’s a humbling thing, to sit in a class and watch a student soar in a scene—watch them reveal a new “truth” on stage.” Additionally, Shea is bringing his professional wisdom and those of other industry professionals to a broader audience through the new HCA web series “The Journey,” conversations where seasoned actors, writers, and producers reflect on what an actor’s professional journey can look like for those starting on the path. “If you watch every episode, you realize that there is no one path to make your way in the entertainment industry… but what has made each of these guests a great artist is that they’ve all lived their own lives, had their own experiences, and learned their own lessons,” said Shea.

JERE SHEA | ACTOR, MUSICIAN, INSTRUCTOR

Because of you, HCA can continue to offer outstanding instruction by master teachers and actors like Shea in your own backyard. Thank you!

he lights dimmed. The audience hushed. A little girl’s eyes began to twinkle.

Emma Pawl remembers her first-grade self being so mesmerized by an Enter Stage Left Theater (ESL) children’s production that she was determined to be in the next show. “My mother had learned about this theater company simply from seeing a local flyer,” she said. Now preparing for her first year at Berklee College of Music this fall as a vocal performance major, Pawl has fond memories of her time here. “HCA will always hold a special place in my heart, for it has been a second home to me,” said Pawl. As the resident theater company of Hopkinton Center for the Arts, ESL Theater offers children, teens and adults an important outlet for self-expression, exploring their talents, and developing leadership skills. “HCA provides, through the arts, a place for young people to discover their passions, connect and collaborate with their peers, positive role models and mentors who inspire, and a place to belong outside of school, where new friendships can be formed.”

oard member Christine Chapman’s eyes begin to sparkle when she talks about the HCA.

Chapman recalls moving to Hopkinton in 2012 and feeling an immediate connection to HCA. Almost a decade later it is still a rock. “It’s a place I believe in, with everything I have. It’s a source of emotional and spiritual respite and release, connection and community.” Now teen daughter Celia “CeCe” continues to sing and play the piano and guitar while her young son Henry enjoys the visual arts, particularly painting. “The HCA has been a place of great healing for our little family of three.” Like her children, Chapman is grateful for the friendships she has formed at HCA, particularly as a member of the Treblemakers Community Chorus and board of the HCA. Chapman’s business Education Station sponsors HCA’s Cabaret Open Mic.

12

“Treblemaker friends have been my music family… the board work has introduced me to people I respect and admire deeply and whom I consider some of my most impactful fellow creators and collaborators,” said Chapman.

ance is at the heart of Emma Bartolini’s family.

“Dance is what brought us (husband David and her) together and is incredibly important to all of us individually as well as a family,” Bartolini, a Marlborough resident said, whose daughter Belle also dances at HCA. So when director of dance Jessica Wilson began offering classes for adults, Emma dusted off her dance shoes after a 20-year hiatus from the studio setting. “I walked in, a bundle of nerves, years of regret and anxious emotion circling around me, and the very first moment I walked in, I knew I had discovered my new dance home,” said Bartolini. “Jessica’s personality is warm and welcoming, with no pretense, and an immediate sense of belonging.” “As a Mom who is a dancer, and visual artist—to be able to show my daughter that I picked something back up after 20 years away from it… and to rediscover a life’s passion, is a lesson I hope to instill in her,” she said.

or HCA supporter and member, Julia Potapov, HCA is more than a barn; it’s a parade.

“For the celebration of Hopkinton’s 300th Anniversary parade, our whole family took part in HCA’s float. This was our first real ‘HCA moment’,” said Potapov. Ever since the opening of the new building in 2015, HCA has been a self-described “second home” for Julia, husband Alex and her three children, Leah, Alice, and Dan. The Potapovs have volunteered at events, served as teacher assistants, taken classes in ballet, art, tap, and participated in theater productions. Even Julia’s mother-in-law Nina has been bitten by the HCA bug, taking art classes, participating in the member show, and donating hand-made items for HCA’s annual gala. “Supporting the HCA means making sure it continues to thrive. It means making sure all families in our community have access to the wonderful HCA programs,” said Potapov.

Coming Together YOU KEEP THE MUSIC PLAYING THROUGH COVID

You are amazing!

I

n a year like no other, you helped HCA thrive amidst the pandemic. Whether you took a virtual class, volunteered at an outdoor concert, supported the gala with a donation, made a phone call or sent a note of appreciation to a teacher to show your support, you kept HCA resilient. Below are the many ways your commitment to HCA kept the arts lively in 2020: • HCA takes all classes online—Jessica Wilson begins teaching

dance classes via Zoom, and other classes quickly follow.

• Special COVID Appeal to HCA community—$40K was

raised to support art-making at HCA with the onset of COVID quarantines and shutdowns.

• At Home with the HCA Concert—You rallied with your

neighbors and fellow HCA supporters through an inspiring evening of song with Jere Shea, David Jeremiah, Patrick Faucher, and Barbara Kessler.

• Art @ A Distance—Outdoor summer concerts become a way

for the community to gather safely. Summer programs begin both online and in-person.

• 15th Annual Arts in Bloom—This annual event was moved

from May to December, but that didn’t stop more than 70 artists who submitted artwork. The selected artists joined with Hopkinton Garden Club in presenting a virtual and in-person art exhibit.

• Art Lights the Night Virtual Gala—You helped HCA

raise $50,000 in support of HCA’s mission while the community danced the night away with DJ Mad Marj safely from home.

• HCA Home for the Holidays —A Nutcracker Story, virtual

visits with Santa, and outdoor “Let It Go” NYE family events bring the magic of the season in new ways.

“This is the best Santa experience my family has ever had,” Julie George said. “The virtual experience you gave to my children made their year, I think—I know it made mine.”
