CLAY CREATIONS FOR KIDS

CERAMICS: FOUNDATIONS

Students will learn basic hand-building techniques such as slab, coil and pinching while making both useful and decorative objects. This class has the option of supervised walking to the HCA from Hopkins school.

Beginning students will learn basic ceramic techniques. Initial focus will be on basic wheelthrowing skills such as wedging clay, centering, forming vessels, and glazing. Later in the session students will be introduced to hand-building techniques and can then choose to work on individual wheel-thrown or hand-built projects. More advanced students will continue expand their skills in throwing, hand-building and glazing techniques while working on individual and instructor inspired creations.

INTERMEDIATE WHEEL THROWING

CERAMICS: FOUNDATIONS

This class is for high school students with or without prior experience in ceramics. Students with at least two years of wheel-throwing experience, and teacher permission, will be allowed to register for this class prior to reaching grade 9. Beginning high school students will learn basic ceramic techniques such as wedging clay, centering, forming vessels, and glazing. Experienced students will learn more advanced forms as well as hone in on their own individual styles. Form alteration and complex surface decorating techniques will be explored together with the instructor. 8 classes.

CERAMICS

INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED CERAMICS

AGES 18+

Students in this class will learn more advanced forms as well as hone in on their own individual styles. Form alteration and complex surface decorating techniques will be explored together with the instructor. Students who join this class should have prior experience in ceramics and will have access to Open Studio hours to work on their pieces outside of class time.

BEGINNER/INTERMEDIATE CERAMICS Beginning students will learn basic ceramic techniques. Later in the session students will be introduced to handbuilding techniques and can then choose to work on individual wheel-thrown or hand-built projects. Intermediate students will focus on making more complex forms, glazing techniques and other surface decoration. Students will have access to Open Studio hours to work on their pieces outside of class time.

HANDBUILDING FOR ADULTS: ALL LEVELS Beginners will learn basic hand-building skills such as slab, coil, and pinch pots, and all students will refine technique, surface treatment, and finishing options. More advanced students will dig into their own personal style by exploring more complex forms. Class discussions and critiques of fired works will allow students to better explore these individual styles.

CREATIVE DANCE

BALLET 1 WITH INTRO TO JAZZ

Through storytelling, props, music, and play, young dancers are introduced to dance movement. Rhythm, coordination, and listening skills are developed in a playful, warm, and nurturing atmosphere.

Ballet 1 with introduction to Jazz (ages 5–6) aims to be an inspiring and imaginative class designed to be a foundation for basic dance principles and the proper French ballet terminology. An emphasis is placed on musicality and creativity while basic coordination skills and the fundamentals of classical ballet are explored through the use of props and imagery. Students round out the hour with an introduction to Jazz dance.

BROADWAY JAZZ

AGES 10–13 BALLET 4 AND JAZZ

Set to popular music of today, students (ages 10–13) will do a warm up inspired by classic Broadway styles. Isolations, laterals, stretches, and across the floor progressions are all introduced along with fun choreographed combinations inspired by popular dances and hip hop moves. Students interested in supplementing their theater or ballet training will find jazz technique provides wonderful advancement.

UPPER BALLET SCHOOL Intermediate marks the start of pointe* classes for dancers as well as increased study of pirouettes, adagio, and allegro. Training for advanced students continues its focus on alignment and proper technique while preparing students for pre-professional and professional training options.

DANCE ADULT INTERMEDIATE CONTEMPORARY

AGES 18+

Classes are both technique and performance focused, incorporating yoga, cardio, strength training, and elements of ballet, modern, jazz, and improv dance techniques. You’ll begin with a full body warm up to build strength and flexibility, then progress to exploring larger movement sequences traveling through space.

ADULT BEGINNER BALLET If you are looking to try ballet classes for the first time, or you’ve looking for a new way to approach health and wellness, this is a perfect class. If you are looking to pick up ballet again, or you’ve looking for a new way to approach health and wellness, this is a perfect class. Have fun working out and learning a classical art form.

In this class, elementary music educator Juliet Maglitta will provide a fun and safe environment in which children can explore, develop, and build on their innate musical abilities. There will be singing, dancing, musical games, and more. Perfect for your musical child!

In this class, HCA Director of Music Eric Miller will help you learn how to use your ears, eyes, and mind together to process music in a new way. Demystify sheet music and music analysis and learn to read, listen critically, and understand music. This course is perfect for any music-lover, from the college-bound music or musical theater major, to the professional musician, to the amateur musician alike.

TREBLEMAKERS CHORUS

Warm up those pipes and get ready to sing with the TREBLEMAKERS! Singers of all levels are invited to join this adult choral ensemble. Residents of Hopkinton and surrounding MetroWest towns are welcome. No audition is necessary—all you need is a love of singing!! Under the direction of Eric Miller, HCA Director of Music, the Treblemakers will rehearse in person at the HCA. Proof of COVID vaccination(s) will be required to join the chorus.

MUSIC “BOOK CLUB” You have heard of book club--why not try the same idea but with your favorite music? Sign up by yourself or with some friends, pick an album once every week, listen through it, and come together to discuss the music with the guidance of HCA Director of Music, Eric J Miller. THEATER COLLABORATIVE THEATER PERFORMANCE FOR YOUNG ACTORS

AGES 6–8

While the Actor’s Studio course teaches acting technique, this class focuses on producing an original work. It will cover creating theatre from scratch. We will use different sources to come up with our plot, setting, and characters, while still keeping story structure. Script is optional.

STORYBOOK THEATER FUN This fun, active introduction to creative drama, includes creative movement, imagination, drama games, activities, songs, and hands on crafts. Inspired by favorite children’s books, Storybook Theater will embark on a new adventure each session! The final class will involve a performance for friends and family.

Final performance for friends and family will feature an original play created by the class. Those students who have taken more than one sessions of Actor’s Studio are encouraged to consider trying this course in addition to or as an alternative.

PLAYWRITING FOR YOUNG WRITERS

This acting class is great for budding performers who want to hone their performance skills. Students will explore foundational acting skills through games, monologues, scene work, character building, and improvisation. The final day of class will feature a showcase.

Students will learn script formatting and dramatic structure. We will cover the common genres of theater to spark inspiration for short scripts each week. Student will choose their favorite of the plays they have written and continue it for a staged reading for friends and family.

PLAYWRITING FOR TEENS

AGES 13–17

Learn the skills essential to becoming a playwright. Students will learn script formatting and dramatic structure. We will also cover common genres of theatre and use different genres to spark inspiration for short scripts each week. Each student will choose their favorite of the plays they’ve written for class and continue it for a staged reading for friends and family. Printer and computer at home required. Notebook and pen/pencil in class required. Instructor: Rhinannon Annin

ACTOR’S STUDIO FOR TEENS Designed for beginner and intermediate teen (high school) actors, this practical studio class will explore the craft of acting in an ensemble atmosphere. We will use theater games, acting exercises, and scene work (scripted and unscripted) to develop essential skills, techniques, and vocabulary. Students who participated in the fall session will take their acting skills to the next level. Students will gain insight and experience in developing a character and delivering a compelling performance in a range of styles. This class is for the serious acting student. Students will audition during the first class for placement purposes. There will be work required outside of class. Instructor: Karin Tractenberg

AN ACTOR PREPARES This 4-class session is designed for adult actors, performers and public speakers, this course will introduce exercises and techniques for preparing the voice, body and mind for rehearsal and performance. We will explore listening and responding as part of an ensemble, how to approach character development through physical expression, and then move into language using Shakespeare’s verse.

MUSICAL THEATER STUDIO FOR TEENS Designed for beginner and intermediate teen (high school) Musical Theater performers, this practical studio class will explore Musical Theater performance in an ensemble atmosphere. Students should be comfortable singing and performing in public, and will gain insight and experience in developing a character and delivering a compelling performance in a range of styles. The class will work toward a showcase for the final class; however, the emphasis for this class is the learning and rehearsal process itself. This class is for the serious student. VISUAL ARTS TEEN ARTIST MENTORSHIP

AGES 9–13 CARTOONING CLUB

In this class we will allow students to work independently on projects of their choosing with the availability of a professional artist and instructor to help them find their creative voices. Students will learn how to cultivate ideas into artwork, and participate in group discussions learning how to benefit from positive critique sessions. This class is recommended for independent minded teens who have outgrown the Fine Art Academy but wish to continue to make art in a supportive group setting. Mentor/Instructor: Sarah Alexander

Cartoon Club is a fun and creative class that gives students a well-rounded base to get them started on mastering the styles they desire to doodle in. SCULPTURE ADVENTURES It’s time to get three dimensional with art! This is one of the HCA’s most popular programs because it covers a little bit of everything relating to art making. Drawing, watercolors, acrylic, pastel, mixed media, and pen and ink. Students will also learn about different artists and make work inspired by those artists. While class materials will be provided, we ask that each student bring a sketch book to class. Students will be given prompts each week to encourage them to draw and share their work at the start of each class.

Drawing can be one of the most relaxing and creative activities to engage in. The perfect stressreliever! Whether you are a complete novice or more advanced, this class will focus on meeting you where you are. This course will cover skills such as contour drawings, line weight, value, and texture. OPEN STUDIO FOR VISUAL ARTISTS

This online Zoom class is for the serious beginner. In a friendly and multicultural environment, we will seek to inspire your creative journey. During these 4-class session, Instructor Marion Buricatu will give you a weekly art challenge about basic painting skills that will take student no more than 30 minutes to do at home. Students are invited to show and tell or ask for feedback/critique or simply participate in this nurturing, stimulating environment. Students have to provide their own art materials. This class is offered online only.

Under the guidance of instructor Marion Buricatu, these workshops are for students wishing to find and enhance their fundamental art skills in drawing and painting. Students may bring a project of their choosing at any stage of the process, and Marion will customize her instruction and offer lessons on elements of art and technique. The open studios will take place on April 23rd, May 21st & June 11th.

WEEKEND WATERCOLORS New and continuing students welcome. Each class we will review various topics including the choice of materials, composition and drawing, value studies, basic washes, masking and common watercolor techniques such as dry brush. VISUAL ARTS MINDFUL ART MAKING WORKSHOP

PAINTING STUDIO FOR ADULTS

This unique 4 class workshop includes gentle movement (accessible to all) meditation and art-making as a portal to presence, discovery and natural creativity. No yoga or art experience required, no special clothing or yoga mat required. Come as you are with an open mind and a willingness to experiment. Led by seasoned Kripalu yoga instructor Mary Green.

Watercolors, pastels, oil, acrylics—there’s a wide variety of paint in the world of visual arts. This class is a for true beginners or those artists who have only ever worked in one medium. The 8 class session will spend two classes each on a different type of paint. You will get a chance to learn the basics of each and find the medium that most inspires you. Materials will be provided.

SECRET ART & WINE WORKSHOP

Whether you are looking for a girls night out, or a date night with your partner, unwind from your week and indulge in some relaxing and fun art! This is not your traditional “paint night”. You will not be guided by an instructor to paint the same picture. Instead a different HCA instructor will guide you through an free style art project. The secret is that you don’t know what you’ll be creating until you arrive. It could involve painting, mixed media, clay or an assortment of unconventional materials.

OIL AND ACRYLIC PAINTING From beginners to more accomplished oil and acrylic painters. Classes are lively and very handson; you will get as little or much time as you need. In this multicultural environment, everyone brings a different perspective and different levels of experience. It is much more than just a painting class! Students must provide their own materials. HCA BUILDING POLICIES AND PROCEDURES Updated May 21, 2021 | Subject to change based on Massachusetts/Hopkinton Board of Health Covid-19 guidelines

General guidelines for all visitors, staff and students to any HCA building:

Process for Handling Sick, Symptomatic and Exposed Children and Staff

Visitors/Staff to the HCA

All staff/teachersare encouraged to take their own temperature at home each day prior to coming to the HCA. It’s important for people to not come to the HCA if they have a frequent cough, sneezing, fever, difficulty breathing, chills, muscle pain, headache, sore throat, or recent loss of taste or smell, or if they or someone they live with has been diagnosed with COVID-19.

The HCA will provide signage of health requirements that are in compliance with recommended health agency protocols for visitors to our space attending public performances, art gallery exhibits, classes, rehearsals and rental events.

Effective July 1, 2021, face-coverings are REQUIRED indoors at HCA for ALL VACCINATED and UNVACCINATED persons. The following persons are exempt from the face covering requirements: children 2 years of age and younger; persons with underlying medical conditions that prevent them from wearing a mask.

•

Teachers, students, staff and visitors should make a point to periodically wash their hands and/or utilize hand sanitizer during their time at the HCA.

•

Anyone exhibiting symptoms commonly associated with COVID/Flu, or is generally feeling unwell, should not enter the HCA buildings.

Positive COVID-19 Response In the event that the HCA learns that a student, staff member, instructor or other persons visiting the HCA test positive for COVID-19, we will take all recommended steps provided by the CDC and local health department including, but not limited to: • Notify the students/guardians of all in-house programs of the potential exposure within that student’s assigned group. If necessary, provide instruction via an online platform during the period of inquiry. • Conduct an overnight deep cleaning of our building. • Restrict those students who have potentially been exposed from entering our building for the recommended period of time per the local Board of Health or documentation of a negative test result.

Cleaning/Disinfecting The HCA utilizes a 3rd party vendor to do twice a week building cleaning, as well as ultra-violet disinfection one time a week.

Food & Beverage Guidelines

All teachers and staff are expected to clean surfaces and commonly used areas before and after their classes. Common areas include tables, chairs, instruments, door handles, sinks, art materials, dance barres, etc. The HCA will make cleaning supplies available for all instructors/staff.

All staff/students must provide for their own meals/ snacks/beverages. Staff/Teachers who utilize the HCA refrigerator must label all their food and beverage items to avoid inadvertent sharing of food. At no time will peanut products be allowed at the HCA. The HCA will alert instructors and CITs of other potential food allergies communicated by parents.

WAIVERS

Due to the uncertainty of the COVID-19 crisis has placed on our programming schedule, please note the following:

I understand there is a certain amount of reasonable risk of minor injury associated with this program and do not hold the Hopkinton Center of the Arts, Enter Stage Left Theater, or the Town of Hopkinton responsible for any such injuries.

If the HCA cancels your class session (due to recommendations by the CDC and local health authorities): a. Families can elect to transfer the session to an available online program.

I give permission for my or my child’s image in videotapes, photographs and/or motion picture films in which she/he appear, and audio recordings made of him/ her may be used by the Hopkinton Center for the Arts and Enter Stage Left Theater for publicity purposes.

b. Families can take a credit for the tuition to be applied to an HCA program for up to two years. c. Families can choose to donate all or a portion of their program fees to the HCA. The HCA is a 501c (3) organization. Donations are a vital part of supporting our operations and programs.

HCA FINANCIAL AID

The Hopkinton Center for the Arts believes the arts are for everyone and thanks to the generosity of the Sandra Delbridge Scholarship Fund and individual donations to our scholarship fund we are able to assist children, teens, and adults who might not otherwise be able to afford classes. Need-based scholarships are available for HCA classes to residents of Hopkinton and surrounding Metrowest communities. Assistance is awarded on the basis of demonstrated need, motivation, and potential benefit to the student.

d. Families may request a full refund. e. Any combination of the above options. If a family wishes to cancel the class session: a. Refunds of program fees will be offered in full if requested two weeks prior to their start date. Please make the request in writing by emailing info@hopartscenter.org. Families are asked to consider donating a portion of their fees to the HCA to help with the ongoing activities and operational support.
