HOPART 2021

Art is visual thinking. Exhibiting one’s art is your visual language to others and that is not easy. Vulnerability, honesty, and bravery are just some of the many qualities each and every Hopkinton High School student possess whose artwork I was asked to judge for HOPART 2021.

We create art forms as a metaphor to express qualities, feelings, and experiences in one’s life. Ideation, or conceptual basis, for a work of art is relatively straightforward and therefore not difficult to resolve. However, what is most difficult for an artist to successfully resolve their visual narrative is to retain a quiet, yet powerful determination (follow through) combined with thoughtful pragmatism in order to complete compositional decisions. This resolve (perhaps the passive anarchist) in substance cannot be taught and is at best enabled by an art teacher of equal resolve and belief in art as a most important non-verbal form of expression. The second component of a successful artist are the methodologies and skills needed to produce the work. This is taught. This is the pedagogical dynamic which takes place between the individual and the teacher. Though this Studio Based Learning atmosphere is most challenging to enable in the classroom setting, the actual pedagogy is highly individualized and uniquely applied to each and everyone one of us. We often have the ideation, the conceptual basis for the work, it’s the methods, the techniques, and the skills that are not commensurate. Certainly, it is a continuum to learn, develop, and uniquely apply those methods and methodologies. No one knows everything, and no one is perfect, but those art teachers in the Hopkinton Visual Arts Program must be pretty darn good.

An artist makes. An artist is the designer-maker. This is true whether an individual is restoring a car, landscaping one’s property, making art forms in one’s living space, or submitting work for a juried exhibition. Think about it. You are the designer-maker. You have created something that lives in this world. Think about it. Think about it at 30,000 feet, not just at ground level in the classroom/studio. Not many people do this. Even fewer individuals do this successfully. For all of you in HOPART 2021 you are quite successful.

You have created these visual narratives that are compelling. Your work has stopped me. Through color, line weight, compositional balance. Through visual mass or lack thereof. Through foreground, background. Through positive, negative. Through focus and un-focus. Through photo-real moments in time to sophisticated abstractions and embellishments. Your work gave me pause, a meta-stable state of tension- a wanting to absorb, apprehend, and empathize. Your visual narratives created an internal conversation as I am compelled to understand, relate, and feel.
