Middendorf’s Oktoberfest: Party Like It’s 1810 If you read up on the origins of Oktoberfest, you’re likely to find two different stories. One credits the Munich celebration of the October 12, 1810 marriage of Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig to the Saxon-Hildburghausen Princess Therese. The other simply says… in the old days, October was when it was finally cool enough to brew lagers. Hooray! Let’s celebrate. While there are plenty of places to toast the beer part of this annual ritual, there are few places that will create the complete German experience, as Middendorf’s Restaurant will. In addition to serving authentic German meals for both lunch and dinner every Wednesday and Thursday from October 4 - November 9 (alongside the regular menu), their servers will be wearing traditional German attire. Menu highlights include tongue-twisting delicacies like schlachtplatte, sauerbraten, rotkraut, spätzle, and schwarzwälderkirschtorte (that’s Black Forest cake!). Visitors can also stroll through and take fun photos in Middendorf’s festive bier garden/German village, which includes custom German buildings and a maypole. And what’s a party without music? As a special treat for Oktoberfest, Heinz Pfeifer (the brother of Middendorf’s owner/chef Horst Pfeifer) will travel from Germany to entertain guests with traditional music on his accordion. A Well-Oiled Machine: Conventional vs. Synthetic When it comes to food and personal care products, it’s pretty much always best to go with the less processed options that are closest to their natural form. But motor oil is a different story. Conventional oil is derived directly from crude oil, while the synthetic variety is the result of more advanced refining processes. Which is better? According to Consumer Reports, many automakers require vehicle owners to use synthetic motor oil because it’s designed to be more effective at resisting breakdowns, withstanding high temperatures, and flowing in cold temperatures -- all of which results in fewer oil changes and can extend the life of your engine. The downside, however, is that synthetic motor oil can cost two to four times as much as regular oil. It’s helpful, but is it necessary?
