Brooks is a book loving, strong, funny and energetic four-year-old, but he entered the world a fighter. Shortly after his birth, his parents Stacy and George found out their sleepy newborn had an absent tricuspid valve, pulmonary atresia and an enlarged heart. Pulmonary atresia is a Congenital Heart Defect where the valve doesn’t form at “We were initially shocked and scared when we found out about Brooks’ critical combination of CHDs But thanks to our wonderful family, friends and faith, we’ve weathered the ups and downs and came out of this experience with an amazing little boy. We are so thankful for the nurse who caught his condition with a simple pulse oximetry reading,” said Stacy. Four years and four open heart surgeries later – the first when he was only a few days old – Brooks is now a typical toddler who loves to play outside, go to preschool, read books with his parents and try to keep up with his two older brothers. “We want to share our story because CHDs can happen to any child, any family. Through the American Heart Association of Greater New Orleans and other support networks, we’ve found connections and education to help guide us along our family’s journey. We encourage everyone to advocate for your child and reach out for support., While Brooks’ CHD is rare, heart defects are the number one birth defect of babies. One in 100 babies will experience a CHD of some type.
Although the rate of Congenital Heart Defects has not decreased over time, more infants with heart defects are surviving to adulthood because of advancements made through research and technology. The American Heart Association is working hard every day to fund research and promote health policies like healthy restaurant meal kids drinks right here in the Greater New Orleans area that helps to save lives through advanced systems of care, treatment, prevention and healthy lifestyles. Join the fight and support heart survivors like Brooks. Join him on National Wear Red Day, Friday, February 7. Wear red to show your support to combat CHDs and to defeat heart disease, which takes more lives than all cancers combined. Together we can show our support and take a stand to raise awareness.
