BENEFITS OF

HOO’s HUNGRY

COOKING WITH KIDS

Have you seen the popular kids’ cooking shows on television lately? These shows are inspiring young kids to want to know how to make their own food in their own kitchens! Kids are naturally better engaged in learning with hands-on activities. That is why cooking and helping in the kitchen is a great way to engage kids to learn a life skill that they can use for years to come. Not only is cooking FUN, it also helps kids to learn what is in the food that we eat. They can learn that bread is not just something that you buy off of a shelf in a grocery store; but also that bread is made of simple ingredients including yeast and flour. If you have a picky eater, getting them involved in preparing meals may help them be more apt to eat it, or at least try it. They’ll get to have some say on what’s included and see that there are no ‘scary’ ingredients in the dish. Some recipes can also help kids learn about the science of cooking, such as how combining certain ingredients can form a chemical reaction, like yeast making bread rise. In addition, math skills are also reinforced by measuring ingredients with various measuring tools. Their motor skills are also engaged with measuring, pouring, kneading, chopping and other preparation actions. Cooking can also help boost kids’ self-esteem. They are usually proud to eat the food that they made and be able to share it with others. Plus, cooking is a great way to bring families together. It is hands-on, interactive and requires teamwork. The best part is the fellowship of sitting together to share in the fruits of their labor.

History of School The first schools in the 13 colonies opened in the 17th century. The Boston Latin School was the first public school opened in the United States, in 1635. To this day, it remains the nation’s oldest public school.

Early public schools in the United States did not focus on academics like math or reading. Instead they taught the virtues of family, religion, and community.

l l l l l l l l l l l l l Common Schools emerged in the 18th century. These schools educated students of all ages in one room with one teacher. Students did not attend these schools for free. Parents paid tuition, provided housing for the school teacher, or contributed other commodities in exchange for their children being allowed to attend the school.

By 1900, 31 states had mandatory school attendance laws for students from ages 8-14 and by 1918, every state required students to complete elementary school.

DRYER SHEETS Fabric softener and dryer sheets are full of chemicals... Ditch that fabric softener and those store bought dryer sheets. Courtesy of viewfromthefridge.com

DIRECTIONS Cut some squares out of your fabric scraps. Use a pinking shears if you don’t plan on sewing or serging the edges. This will prevent most of the fraying. Mix up your DIY Softening Solution: 1/2 cup of Vinegar & 8-10 drops of your favorite essential oil(s). Pour your ‘personalized’ scented softening solution into the resealable container. Add your fabric squares and let them absorb the vinegar/oil mix Flip the container over to mix it up. Grab a couple squares, ring out the excess liquid, and throw ’em into the dryer with your clothes (I use about 4-6 per large load). The best part is .. after the load is dry, just pull out your squares, throw ’em back in the container, and let them absorb the vinegar / oil mix again!

SUPPLIES Vinegar Sealable glass container Fabric scraps (or old dishtowels, old sheets, bed linens, t-shirts, etc) Your favorite essential oil

HOO’s HEALTHY Probiotics are live, ‘friendly’ bacteria that may help promote a healthy digestive system and immune system when consumed. These microorganisms are similar to the ‘friendly’ strains of bacteria that naturally reside in your digestive tract. Probiotics can either be consumed in food or taken as a supplement. It is a common practice for parents to give kids foods like yogurt that contain probiotics to help resolve digestive issues. However, many parents wonder if it is beneficial or even safe to give an infant probiotic supplements which are marketed to boost the immune system and help with problems like colic, digestive issues or eczema. Here is the science behind why probiotics may help resolve these issues. Newborns have a digestive tract devoid of the ‘friendly’ bacteria (also called ‘flora’) at birth. Babies born vaginally are exposed to the friendly bacteria when passing through the vaginal canal and this flora then starts to populate in the digestive tract. The flora assists with digestion and also helps establish a heathy immune system. Babies born by C-Section do not have this initial exposure to friendly bacteria and, as a result, the type of flora in their digestive

Probiotics

systems is different than that of vaginally born babies. Although more research is needed, some experts feel this may explain why a higher percentage of C-section babies are diagnosed with colic and digestive issues.

There is not a lot of hard scientific evidence yet that probiotic supplements benefit infants and young children, but the data researchers are beginning to gather looks promising. A study published in January 2018 in the journal Pediatrics provided scientific evidence that a certain type of probiotic may help alleviate colic. In the study, breastfed infants with colic were given a supplement containing a strain of flora called Lactobacillus reuteri and the likelihood of the infants having bouts of crying was reduced 50% after three weeks of treatment. If your infant suffers from colic, digestive issues, or eczema, first consult his pediatrician before giving him probiotics to find out which strain of flora may help the most and what size dose you should give him.

An Inside Look

Robbie Przepioski Columbus Figure Skating Academy Director

It’s uncommon to have an ice rink in the south, but Columbus has one. It’s even more uncommon to have a nationally ranked skater in the south, but Columbus has one of those too! His name is Robbie Przepioski and he is the director of the Columbus Figure Skating Academy. He began a little over a year ago, and in that time, the program’s enrollment has grown from 75 members to 195! And it’s no surprise, considering Robbie’s accomplishments.

Robbie, who is originally from California, didn’t begin skating until 14, which is considered a late start in the sport. By age 23 he was competing at the Olympic trials, an accomplishment many called impossible. Some national qualifiers start skating at the age of four! He came close to qualifying for the Olympics; however, he realized quad jumps were taking a toll on him physically. He made the decision to pursue a coaching career instead, but not until he completed a couple more goals: winning a pairs national skating medal and completing a back-flip on the ice. He accomplished both. “I did things I couldn’t imagine I’d ever be able to do,” Robbie admits, “It’s like winning the lottery…even though you have so much doubt in yourself… you can find ways to achieve things you never thought you could.” Robbie’s career is inspiring and he’s using his accomplishments to inspire the children he coaches. “When I first visited Columbus...The kids were grateful and happy, but parents were stressing the need for help.” He decided to take a chance on the small southern town of Columbus. And according to Robbie, it’s been fun ever since. Recently, he took nine kids between the ages of six and 14 to compete in various regional competitions. At the most recent competition in Decatur, nine kids glided away with 24 medals. “These kids are competing and beating

left and right. They are extremely talented. We’re looking like a powerhouse.” Robbie says with a smile. Columbus Figure Skating Academy is a non-profit skating academy, teaching children to skate for fun or competition. Currently, their start-up costs are some of the lowest in the nation, around $140 for a 9-week course, including skate rentals. Lessons start at the age of five and are twice a week. When Robbie was asked who should join CFSA, he gave a bit of encouragement: “I think everyone should be skating, because one, everyone can do it…and you can start at any age.” He explains, “My oldest student was 84 years old when I began working with her. It was something she always wanted to do after seeing Peggy Fleming on TV.” CFSA offers lessons for those just learning to skate for fun, competition or ice hockey. Signups start the second week of August. Sign up online at columbusfigureskating.com.

BE THE ONE

If it seems like life-threatening food allergies are more common than they were when you were a kid, you’re not imagining it. The number of children with food allergies increased by nearly 50 percent between 1997 and 2011, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Researchers are working to discover why food allergies are on the rise. There might not be a cure for food allergies, but there are some steps you can take to ensure your child is safe at school: themselves, avoid non-labeled or homemade foods Form partnerships with School staff.
