SCHOOL ANXIETY

S

tarting a new school year is often seen as an exciting time for kids, especially if they are attending school for the first time.

However, for some children, the transition from home to school can cause anxiety and panic that is so severe that they express a refusal to attend school even before the first day.

If your child tells you she will not go to school, resist the temptation to dismiss it as defiance or as a minor issue that will resolve itself. Addressing anxiety or phobias that interfere with your child attending school is a step-by-step process. Starting the process before school starts can help make the transition easier. ! Establish a morning routine several weeks before school starts. Create a visual map of morning tasks for younger children to help them become familiar with how the morning will flow. ! Read books together about the first day of school and discuss what the first day will be like. Ask open-ended questions to see if you can find the root cause of your child’s anxiety. Some common root causes of school refusal include separation anxiety, a fear of being bullied, the stress of having to meet new people and make friends, and fear of failure. If you can identify the root cause, it will help you form a strategy to address it. ! Arrange to tour the school and meet with the staff before the first day. If you have identified the root cause of the anxiety, the staff can work with you to address it.

• On open house day, practice walking into the school, show your child the way to her classroom and run through the handoff process with her new teacher.

• Meet with the school counselor so that your child knows there is an adult she can trust when she needs someone to talk to.

• Arrange for a ‘safe space’, such as the nurse’s office, where your child could start the day if necessary. This may help with separation anxiety or sensory overload during the transition from the car to the classroom.

• If your child is feeling overwhelmed with meeting so many new people at once, ask if a student or staff member could be her ‘buddy’ and help her walk to her classroom when she arrives at school. Each day, your child will know she has someone at school who cares about her.

• Ensure your child’s IEP or 504 plan is up to date with any accommodations your child needs.

When the first day of school arrives, if your child’s anxiety is so strong that she will not get out of the car, do not physically force her to attend. This may make her negative feelings even stronger about entering the school. ! Visit the pediatrician to rule out any underlying medical issues. Anxiety can cause physical symptoms that can lead to refusal, such as stomach aches and headaches. ! If there is a suspected underlying mental health or learning disorder, ask for an evaluation. Anxiety often co-exists with mental health issues such as ADHD, autism or trauma-related PTSD or learning disorders such as dyslexia. Ask the doctor for documentation of the diagnosis if one is identified along with a referral to a specialist who can help write a treatment plan. ! Immediately notify the school staff. Work with the staff to make modifications to your child’s drop-off plan to make the transition easier. ! Teach your child coping skills. Show her how to use deep breathing, or box breathing to slow her heart rate and calm her nervous system.

Larger than Life Cultural Exhibit in the Gardens

T

his summer and into fall, families can experience art, culture, and the beauty of nature all in one place at Columbus Botanical Garden’s newest exhibition, La Calavera Catrina.

On display from June 26 through November 9, the exhibition features nine colorful, eight-foot-tall sculptures created by Los Angeles-based artist Ricardo Soltero. Set throughout the Garden’s living galleries, the larger-than-life sculptures celebrate the beloved Mexican icon, La Catrina, and provide a fun and educational experience for visitors of all ages.

In addition to the exhibit, the Garden will host a variety of La Calavera Catrina-themed programs and events throughout the summer and fall, giving families even more opportunities to engage with the art and culture on display. FriYAYs will take place every Friday from 4-6:30pm through August 28 and will feature hands-on crafts inspired by one of the Catrina sculptures.

While artificial sweeteners may be beneficial for people with preexisting diabetes who need to regulate blood sugar, studies show that there may be negative impacts on the body from long-term use of artificial sweeteners.

Artificial sweeteners can alter gut bacteria

Saccharin, aspartame and sucralose reduce beneficial gut bacteria species such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, which assist with immune function, digestion and reducing inflammation in the body.

At the same time, these artificial sweeteners increase potentially harmful bacteria like Proteobacteria and certain Clostridia species.

People with inflammatory bowel disease and Crohn’s disease may especially be affected by the negative changes in the gut bacteria community and suffer from increased intestinal inflammation.

s the school year begins, families are getting ready with new backpacks, fresh supplies, and exciting routines. But one of the most important tools for success in kindergarten—and beyond—doesn’t come from a store. It starts at home, with reading.

Families can make this journey even easier by tracking progress with the Beanstack Tracker app. It helps parents log books, celebrate milestones, and stay motivated along the way—all in one simple, easy-touse place.

Children who enter kindergarten already able to recognize letters, connect them to sounds, and identify simple sight words have a meaningful head start. Before they can read independently, children build essential pre-reading skills that lay the foundation for classroom success. These early skills include connecting words to familiar objects, expanding vocabulary, and developing awareness of print. Even simple activities like recognizing rhyming words or clapping out syllables can make a big difference in a child’s literacy development.

A great next step for families is making sure you have a library card.

A free library card gives your child access to thousands of books, early learning tools, and digital resources that support reading at home and on the go. Your friends at the Chattahoochee Valley Libraries are here to support your family every step of the way.

B

iking and hiking have taken Columbus by storm! Standing Boy Trails is a nature preserve located along the Chattahoochee River. This hidden gem has over thirty miles of trails within its over 1,500 acres of beautiful upland pine and hardwood forests. The trails in the park were a long-time dream of mountain bikers Blake Melton and the late Kevin Adams. With help from the local community and generous donors including The Bradley-Turner Foundation, the vision became a reality. Standing Boy is now a forest filled with the laughter of little children and grown adults on bikes and hikes.

Mountain biking at the park is exhilarating. Bikers’ adrenaline rises as they maneuver through roots and rocks, wind around tight corners and even “catch air” as they jump over dirt ramps. Amy Way and Will Burgin of “Columbus Bike Racing,” bring the trails to life by leading youth programs at the park with the help of countless volunteers, many of them parents whose children are involved in racing. The goal of the program is to “get kids on bikes!”

As you explore the trails, you will notice one highlighted feature of Standing Boy is the trail maps located throughout the park. These maps clearly label trail difficulty levels, similar to ski hill resort labels, which are beneficial to bikers and hikers; ranging from green (easiest) and blue (moderate) to black (most difficult). There are also directional signs throughout the park that provide a plan for the daily rotating trail schedule. This keeps visitors engaged in various trail routes and sustains the trails.

Be sure to bring your hiking boots! There are several hiking trails throughout the park. The trails offer rugged terrain for any skill level.

Hiking the trails you may encounter armadillos and soon realize why these quiet leaf scatterers are the mascot of the mountain biking team.

Interested in hiking with a group? There are group hikes posted on the Standing Boy Trails Facebook page at facebook.com/standingboytrails.

When is the park open? The Standing Boy website at standingboy.org indicates trail status as “open” or “closed” in case of weather closures or wet biking trails. Trails are always open to hiking. However, trails ‘close’ to biking during wet conditions to protect the trails.

What does it Cost? Daily parking is $5. Plan to spend more time at the trails? Annual passes are also available. All proceeds go to Standing Boy Inc., the non-profit dedicated to maintaining the preserve.

Looking for biking with a little less dirt? Head down the road a few miles to the Dragonfly Trails, a network of 32 miles of trails. A beautiful path known as The Riverwalk is located along the banks of the Chattahoochee River. This trail offers stunning views of the river and biking opportunities on the blacktop. It is 12-miles running from the Lake Oliver Marina to the Oxbow Meadows Nature Center. The Path Foundation and the Consolidated Government of Columbus have brought the city to life as they continue to create trails for families with a goal of developing 65 miles of trails throughout the city.

Standing Boy and Dragonfly Trails are truly a dream come true for the local community. These trails will bring family and friends together with memories that will last a lifetime. See you on the trails!

BIKING GROUPS For a mountain biker, showing up at the trails often means “friends are already there.” Several mountain biking groups exist, catering to different ages and interests. The mountain biking community ranges in age from 5 to over 60. As my daughter Aniston says, “you get to ride with friends, and everyone is like family.”

Little Bellas August-October (Girls Ages 7-13) This group is all about girls, goals, grit and a little sparkle! Little Bellas is a biking group for girls that focuses on community, games and is a lot of fun. The program encourages girls to participate in team-building activities to gain confidence and biking skills simultaneously. Volunteer Opportunities: Junor Mentor (High School 14-17) Adult Mentor (18+)

Group Rides with ‘CVA SORBA Mountain Biking Club’ are for adults every Thursday at 6:30pm and every Sunday at 3pm to explore the trails. The group rides about 6-7 miles for all experience levels. They spilt into groups according to experience and interests. This group is for mountain bikers who want to build community and burn off some steam!

Trail Rangers March-May (Grades 2nd -5th) This group is coed and focuses on team-building through trail riding. Riders will learn biking techniques, trail safety, teamwork skills and goal-setting.

Students ride each week at Standing Boy Trails building community and confidence. Then they take their skills to bike expeditions around Georgia to compete with other biking teams. Volunteer Opportunities: Junor Mentor (7th-12th grade) Adult Mentor (18+)

Group Rides with ‘Ride on Bikes’ Ride On Bikes in Uptown Columbus hosts a monthly Full Moon Ride that departs at 8pm for 4-7 miles at a leisurely pace suitable for most ages. They also host a Tuesday Night Ride at 6pm, heading south on the River Walk, and culminating with dinner at The Mix Market. These bikers are broken up into three groups based on speed and distance from a conversational pace up to 30mph.

TEAM MTB July-November (Grades 6th-12th) This cross-country biking team is run by the Georgia Cycling Association. Joining the team would provide an excellent way for middle school and high school-aged kids to be active and outdoors! The team focuses on friendships and building confidence while participating in both a team and individual sport.

New to Biking? If you are an adult that wants to learn, show up to a group ride. Beginners are welcome! Many experienced coaches attend. Amy Way, a certified instructor, attends most rides. Email trails@standingboy.org for more information.

very August, World Breastfeeding Month highlights the importance of supporting mothers throughout their breastfeeding journey. While breastfeeding is natural, it is also a learned skill, and every family’s experience is different. The West Central Health District (WCHD) – Department of Public Health (DPH) offers a comprehensive network of services to educate, encourage, and empower mothers from pregnancy through infancy.

The Breastfeeding Connection Available free to all mothers, regardless of income or insurance, The Breastfeeding Connection provides personalized breastfeeding education, lactation support, and breastfeeding supplies. Mothers can receive assistance with latching, milk supply, pumping, returning to work, and other breastfeeding challenges.

Breastfeeding provides the ideal nutrition for babies while offering lifelong health benefits for both mother and child. Breastfed babies receive antibodies that help protect against illness, experience fewer ear and respiratory infections, and have a lower risk of obesity and chronic disease later in life.

Breastfeeding supports postpartum healing and is associated with a lower risk of breast and ovarian cancers, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease. Breastfeeding also strengthens the bond between mother and baby while providing a convenient, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective way to nourish an infant.

Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Program Sometimes the best support comes from someone who has been there. WIC mothers can connect with trained Breastfeeding Peer Counselors—moms who have successfully breastfed and provide encouragement, practical tips, and ongoing support throughout pregnancy and postpartum.

WIC Breastfeeding Services The Georgia WIC Program offers much more than healthy supplemental foods. Eligible families receive nutrition education, breastfeeding counseling, educational resources, and breastfeeding supplies, including breast pumps when eligible. Highlight On When Life Feels Heavy, You Have Support at MercyMed

Parents are juggling work, school schedules, financial pressures, and the emotional weight of trying to hold everything together. Children and teens are navigating social pressures, anxiety, academic stress, grief, and constant digital stimulation. Couples are often trying to reconnect while managing the demands of everyday life.

Sometimes, that stress begins showing up in ways that can be hard to recognize immediately, such as frequent headaches, stomach problems, trouble sleeping, irritability, outbursts, withdrawal from loved ones, exhaustion, and difficulty communicating feelings. Many people do not realize these symptoms can be connected to mental and emotional health.

“We see many people dealing with anxiety, depression, grief, difficult life-transitions, relationship struggles, and unhealthy coping patterns,” said Aidan Kao, MercyMed’s director of mental health. “Often, people feel overwhelmed, stuck, or isolated, but they do not have to face those feelings alone.”

One of the biggest barriers preventing people from seeking counseling is fear. Opening up to someone new about painful experiences or deeply personal struggles can feel intimidating. Many people worry they will be judged or misunderstood. But counseling is not about having all the answers before walking through the door. It is about having a safe place to begin processing life honestly.

“Keeping struggles hidden can often become more damaging over time,” Kao said. “Talking through those experiences with a trained professional is often the first step toward healing.”

Most importantly, part of MercyMed’s mission is to ensure mental healthcare is accessible to everyone, so services are open to the public, and fees are offered on a sliding scale based on household income and family size. Most major insurance plans are also accepted, and services are available in both English and Spanish.

For children, especially, counseling can provide tools to better understand emotions and build healthy coping

skills early in life. MercyMed also offers play therapy, which allows children to express emotions in developmentally appropriate ways when words may be difficult.

For adults and couples, therapy often focuses on improving communication, processing trauma, strengthening relationships, and building healthier emotional patterns.

New clients complete an intake packet that helps both the client and therapist better understand current concerns and goals. The first session focuses on building trust, gathering information and determining what support may be most helpful moving forward. MercyMed also recently expanded its services to include EMDR therapy, a specialized treatment that helps individuals process trauma and distressing experiences.

EMDR, which stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, may sound intimidating at first, but the concept is simple. The therapy helps the brain heal from painful memories, so individuals can remember difficult experiences without feeling as though they are reliving them. EMDR has been shown to help individuals struggling with trauma, anxiety, depression, PTSD and other mental health concerns.

In addition to counseling services, MercyMed offers free mental health classes that are open to the public. These classes cover practical topics such as stress, sleep and emotional wellness, while providing tools families can use in everyday life. They also host the Grey Rock Mental Health Support Group, a welcoming community for individuals with mental health diagnoses to connect, encourage one another and learn coping skills together in a supportive environment.

Healing does not happen in isolation. It happens in community, in real conversation, and in knowing you do not have to walk through difficult seasons alone.

HOO’s HEALTHY Tourettes Syndrome (TS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects the brain and nervous system, causing someone to have sudden, repetitive movements or sounds (called tics) that cannot be easily controlled.

TS usually appears between ages 2 and 15, with an average onset of around 6 years. For most TS patients, the severity of the symptoms peaks in early adolescence, with symptoms often improving in late teens or early adulthood.

Tics are the hallmark symptom of TS. The tics can range in severity from moderate to severe. Severe tics can interfere with communication and the activities of everyday life. Tics are classified into two types: • Simple tics: Quick, repetitive movements involving a few muscle groups.

• Complex tics: Coordinated patterns involving multiple muscle groups or multiple types of movements.

Tics can also be further classified as motor tics or vocal tics.

Motor tics often appear before vocal tics do.

When a TS patient is experiencing a tic, the tic often begins with a premonitory urge, an uncomfortable sensation

WTOhURaETt is: TES temporarily relieved by performing the tic. Sometimes, with great effort, a person with TS is able to resist performing the tic. The exact cause of Tourette syndrome is unknown, but it is believed to result from a combination of genetic and environmental factors. These factors may lead to an imbalance of neurotransmitters, such as dopamine, in the brain.

Risk factors include genetic factors, such as having relatives with TS or other tic disorders increases risk; sex, as males are three to four times more likely to develop TS, and stress and fatigue. Factors such as stress, fatigue and excitement may increase the severity of TS symptoms.

TS is diagnosed by the presence of both motor and vocal tics for a year. The tics must not be a side effect of medication or other medical condition. While TS is not degenerative and individuals have a normal life expectancy, treatment is only necessary if tics are severe and interfere with the patient’s daily life. Treatment may include behavioral therapy and medications.

If your child suddenly starts experiencing involuntary movements or sounds, have him evaluated by his doctor.

When the air passages are opened, the breathing muscle forcibly expels the air and any irritants through the nose and mouth.

Dust and pollen aren't the only things expelled with the air, viruses are also. When you sneeze, mucus-laden air is shot out of your nose and mouth at around one hundred miles per hour! A good blast can travel clear across a room. A sick person could easily spread their illness to anyone in the immediate area. In that case, God bless you!

Chickpea BROWNIE HOO’s HUNGRY

This edible brownie batter is rich, fudgy, and made with blended chickpeas for a smooth, spoonable texture. It’s a no-bake, healthy batter that’s safe to eat from the bowl.

INSTRUCTIONS

Rinse and drain the chickpeas and remove the skins. Place in a high-powered food processor and blend until well mixed.

While the food processor is running, add in the nut milk, vanilla, and maple syrup and mix until creamy (about 2 minutes).

Stop the food processor and add in the nut butter and blend again until well combined. Add in the cocoa powder and mix until thick and creamy, scraping down the sides as needed for 1 minute. Transfer the mixture to a separate bowl and stir in the chocolate chunks and enjoy!

INGREDIENTS • 15 oz can chickpeas • 2 tablespoons almond milk (or other) • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1/4 cup maple syrup - depending on sweetness desired • 1/2 cup nut butter (I used cashew) • 1/4 cup cocoa powder • 2/3 cup chocolate chunks

TIP: To remove the chickpea skins, pinch each bean in between your thumb and index finger until the film is removed.

Alternatively, you can rub a handful of chickpeas in between a towel to remove the skins. This process takes some time but trust me, it's well worth it!
