HOO’s PARENTING Executive function sounds like a term out of a civics class or a MBA course, but it is actually a term that researchers use to refer to a group of important life skills. Here is a description of executive function and how to incorporate the concepts of executive function into everyday parenting.

Executive Function Here are a few steps you can take to ensure your child is developing executive function skills:

An example of executive function would be your child planning how to get homework and chores finished in time so she can attend a playdate.

• Choose your child’s preschool carefully. Key words that indicate the preschool program exposes your child to the concepts of executive function include ‘play-based’ and ‘child-directed.’ Ask to visit the preschool to observe the teachers in action. A teacher who is encouraging students to use their executive function skills will allow them to work out problems on their own, with their guidance, instead of telling them how to solve it.

Experts agree that it is crucial to lay the foundation for developing executive function in the preschool years. Studies show that children who have executive function skills in place and can self -regulate have a higher success rate in school and are later more successful in adulthood.

• Observe your child’s behavior to see which executive function skills they have already started to pick up. Does your child try to communicate desires instead of having a melt down? Does your preschooler try to organize pretend play and try to understand the feelings of others?

Unfortunately, in the United States, there is such a large emphasis on preparing for academic testing that children are not give much time for play during school. It is during play when kids have a chance to practice executive function by organizing a block building project with their peers or practice negotiating for a turn to play with the favorite classroom toy.

• Give your child opportunities to practice executive function skills at home. At the dinner table, teach your preschooler listening skills by asking them to wait for her turn to speak, even though she is very excited about what she wants to share. Also, making up a story and telling it to your child is good practice. Your child will have to focus on the story to understand it, since they won’t have pictures in a book to follow along.

Child development experts define executive function as the ability to self-regulate emotions, plan ahead, and analyze expectations to make sure they are fulfilled.

• Model executive function skills at home. For example, let your child see you planning ahead and strategizing for completing tasks, such as getting ready for a birthday party. Don’t let your child see you ‘lose it’ and yell when you are frustrated. Let them see you give yourself a few moments to calm down and plan your response to the issue before you react.

HOO’s CRAFTY make your own mini

water blobs Have you heard of water blobs? They’re plastic sheeting filled with water, that kids can slip and side on for some awesome, water fun.

Directions Unroll your plastic sheeting and measure the width and height you need for each kid. Then add, at least 3 inches to the height. Fold parchment paper around the top and bottom edges of the plastic sheeting. And iron all the edges, melting the plastic together to make a seal, leaving only a small opening at one corner.

supplies plastic sheeting (at least 4 ml thick)

duct tape food coloring

Use the opening to add your plastic fish, and a few drops of food coloring, then insert your garden hose and fill your mini blob.

iron/ironing board

Then, carefully iron shut the remaining opening and have a roll of duct tape handy, in case of any leaks, but you will be surprised at how durable these blobs are.

HOO’s HEALTHY

GOT IRON? For an expectant mom, having a proper level of iron in the bloodstream helps ensure both she and her baby stay healthy. Iron helps transport nutrients and oxygen throughout her body and to the baby. If iron levels drop too low, an expectant mom starts showing symptoms of anemia, including fatigue and an inability to fight off infection, and her baby may have a low birth weight. If you are newly expecting, a blood iron level test should be performed at your initial prenatal appointment. Expecting moms who have a normal iron level are routinely instructed to take a multivitamin containing about 27 mg of iron. However, a recent study suggests that healthy expectant moms

who show no anemia symptoms and have normal iron levels may be able to get the iron they need from their diet instead of from iron supplements. Iron supplements can have side effects, such as nausea, and some may be able to avoid them by replacing the supplements with eating iron-rich foods like meat and spinach. Since there is no harm, apart from the side effects, in taking the 27mg of supplemental iron a day, most doctors may still recommended this approach, even for healthy expectant moms. However, if you are tired of the side effects, try discussing the approach of increasing dietary iron and decreasing the iron supplements with your doctor to see if it might work for you.

GET A GRIP ON STICKS!

Wise Choices for You & Your Family

If there’s a stick in the yard, you can bet a child is going to pick it up and use it. It may become a bat, a sword, a flag or any number of imagined playthings, but played with it will be. As an easy and accessible extension of the arm, sticks exert a siren’s call on kids who quickly integrate these simple tools into their world of play. The following toys and games use sticks as the base of operation for more fun activities that children can shake a stick at!

Pallina

( Hape)

Designed with simplicity in mind, Pallina is a net enclosure that supports 20 bamboo sticks inserted crossways in random fashion. This criss-crossing of sticks are the temporary underpinning for a jumble of 16 colorful polished wooden balls. Players choose their colors and take turns slowly extracting their stick colors while preventing any of balls of their chosen color from dropping. Suspense runs high as players strive to drop opponents’ balls while keeping their own color supported in the basket until the end. Combining sensitive touch and thoughtful strategy, Pallina is an elegant and eco-friendly game for a broad age-range of players.

Foam Master Pogo Stick

(Flybar)

Joining the ranks of skateboards, bikes, and scooters, the pogo stick is enjoying its own renaissance among kids who want to up their street sport ante. The Flybar Foam Master gets the jump on the competition with a foam-covered sturdy metal frame with recoil that supports users from 80 to 160 pounds. It also features secure grip handles and replaceable non-slip foot pads for the dedicated bounce master. The rubber tip base also provides great stability as kids increase their pogo skills and look toward flashier bounce tricks. Just add a cool helmet and this stick is in first gear for go!

Majestix Juggling Sticks

(Jolly Llama!)

If you kid throws, flips, and tosses every stick he finds, consider channeling that energy toward the challenge of Majestic Juggling Sticks. Manipulated by two grips sticks, the tasseled flip stick can be balanced, tossed, spun, and rolled in a variety of flashy moves that will astound watchers. The tasseled ends of the flip stick provide both resistance to moderate speed as well as balanced weight that ensures smooth momentum through various tricks and manipulations. Free tutorials are easily found online and Jolly Llama also offers an instructional DVD. Made in the USA, Majestix Juggling Sticks are ideal for refining concentration, honing fine motor control and – in the end – adding performer to your child’s list of talents!

UTI - Facts you need to know. An infection of the urinary system (the urethra, bladder or kidney) can be quite painful, and if left untreated, could lead to serious complications. Here is a brief overview of urinary tract infection (UTI) facts you need to know. UTIs are caused by bacteria moving into the urethra and multiplying. Symptoms of an infection in the urethra include painful urination and strange smelling, cloudy urine. The infection, if left untreated, may move up into the bladder and cause pelvic pain, frequent urination, and blood in the urine. If the infection advances into the kidneys, you may also develop a fever, pain in your side, and nausea. An infection of the kidneys can cause serious kidney damage. The bacteria that causes a UTI often have originated in the gastro-intestinal system and end up in the urethra due to poor hygiene. Females are more prone to UTIs due to having a shorter urethra than

males, giving the bacteria less of a distance to travel to the bladder. Prevention begins with teaching your child good potty hygiene and to wipe from front to back. Other preventative measures include teaching your child to completely empty her bladder when she goes to the potty, wearing cotton underwear instead of nylon, avoiding tight pants, and taking a shower instead of a bath. Studies show that drinking cranberry juice may help create an environment in the urethra that is hostile to UTI-causing bacteria. However, cranberry juice will not cure an infection already in place. If someone in your household develops symptoms of a urinary tract infection, notify the doctor as soon as possible. UTIs are confirmed with a test and treated with antibiotics, so there are not any home remedies to try first.

A Page In A Book Wise Choices for You & Your Family

Recommending the Best Books

for Children and Teens By Paige Gardner Smith

Sleepy Selections for Bedtime

While anytime is a good moment to read-aloud with our kids, we tend to make bedtime our reading window. The work of the day is done, distractions are minimized, and a bed is a great setting for reading. Books about sleeping signal the lights out and the following titles are somnolent beauties that will waft the idest eyes to sleep in short order.

Sleepyheads

By Sandra J. Howatt (Simon & Schuster)

The animal kingdom is full of critters whose cute factor launches off the charts when they settle in for the night. Sleepyheads gently parades images of sleeping creatures rendered in their habitats against the soft darkness of night. Simple text introduces each animal cuddled into its favorite sleeping spot with encouragement for readers to find and observe them as they snooze. Illuminated with fireflies and hazy moonlight, this is an ideal transition from the last light of the evening to the peaceful darkness that joins us at bedtime.

Snoozefest

By Samantha Berger (Dial/Penguin)

For Cuddleford Snugglebun, a slow-moving sloth and champion sleeper, Snoozefest is her destination event of the year. Celebrating all the best parts of bedtime and sleeping, Cuddleford prepares to join an army of her fellow snooze fans for the sleepiest show around. Everyone brings their favorite blankets, bedtime books and cuddles. Live bands like ‘Chamomile Rage’ and ‘The Nocturnal Nesters’ take the stage just after the pajama parade. Rhyming text and softly lined illustrations are just the ticket for this book that celebrates everything and everyone who enjoys falling asleep!

Time to Sleep

By Steve Jenkins and Robin Page (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt)

Some children love to learn new things with every book they read. For those young fact-hounds, Time to Sleep is an ideal bedtime book that combines interesting facts about animals’ sleep habits with gorgeous illustrations. An enormous title that covers two laps when opened, the paper collage images are stark and lovely. From the sleepy bee to the drowsy giraffe, the featured animals each reveal a unique or unusual way that they get their sleep. Filled with nuggets of information on snoozing creatures, it’s the perfect book bridge between educational reading and dreamy musing before sleep.

summer brings sun and viruses Goodbye, flu and RSV. Summer viruses that have been lying dormant are once again rearing their angry heads. My office has been overflowing with feverish kids of all ages. I think the most likely culprit for much of the illness we’re seeing right now is an enteroviral infection. (For some reason, it makes us parents feel better if we can “name that virus” and validate the illness.) Enteroviral infections typically cause a nonspecific febrile illness, and with that you can see fairly high fever. In other words, just like when the thermometer rises as summer heat arrives, 101104 degrees of fever is not uncommon in these patients. Of course, it’s no fun to have a high fever in summer when it’s already hot outside! That being said, don’t bundle up a feverish child in layers of clothes and blankets. It’s perfectly acceptable to have a younger child in a diaper and t-shirt, and older children can be in sundress or shorts rather than long sleeves and pants. Bundling may increase the body temperature. I often come into a room with a precious baby who’s running a fever, and the poor child is swathed in blankets. That hot body needs to breathe. These summer enteroviruses may cause other symptoms beside fever. Many kids right now seem to have sore throats and are also vomiting and having diarrhea. With this type of virus, you also hear complaints of headaches and body aches (myalgias). The kids I’m seeing don’t look especially sick, but they do feel pretty yucky. A youngster can feel kind of wiped out when his/her temperature is up.

Besides treating you child’s fever, address their other symptoms to make them comfortable. If they’re vomiting, don’t give them anything to eat and start giving them frequent sips of liquids such as Pedialyte (for the younger ones), Gatorade, or even lemon/lime soda or ginger ale. Small volumes are key. I often use pieces of Popsicle or spoonfuls of a Slurpee to get fluids into kids. I always tried to pick drink colors for my own kids that were easy to clean up, in case they were going to vomit again, so no bright red! Cold fluids may also help soothe a sore throat. Once the vomiting has stopped (it usually lasts no more than 12-24 hours), you can start feeding your child small amounts of food, but I’d steer away from dairy for a day or two. And remember, there’s nothing worse than thinking your child is over vomiting, fixing them a nice milkshake and watching them thrown up again! Many a parent has come into my office wanting to strip after being vomited on -- in a hot car, no less. I don’t think there’s a car wash around that can fully get rid of that smell! Most enteroviral infections last anywhere from two to five days. Keep in mind that there are many different enteroviruses, so your child can get more than one infection during the season. And these infections are not confined to kids, so watch out, parents! Keep up good hand-washing, and keep your child home from school, the pool, camp, day care, play dates, etc. until they’ve been fever free for 24 hours.

RASHES Are they Serious? Hoo’s Tips

Your young child’s skin is sensitive and so it is not unusual for him to develop a rash. Often, the rash is due to a skin condition triggered by exposure to an irritant, but sometimes a rash can be a symptom of a more serious, underlying illness.

Some common skin conditions that cause a rash include eczema, diaper rash, prickly heat, and poison ivy. These itchy rashes can usually be treated by OTC medication. If your child has a rash with no other symptoms, call the doctor for advice on which OTC treatment may work best.

Consult the doctor again if the rash gets worse even after treatment has started or becomes infected.

When your child has a rash that is accompanied by a fever and other symptoms, such as vomiting, the rash is most likely a symptom of an underlying illness. Notify his doctor as soon as possible. Seek emergency medical attention if your child is dehydrated, having difficulty breathing, or if the rash spots still look red even when you press on them.

Here are some of the most common illness usually accompanied by a rash:

HFMD:

Hand Foot & Mouth Disease caused by a virus and causes painful sores along with red blisters on the hands and feet. Your child may feel achy and have a sore throat. HFMD is highly contagious, so keep your child at home until they’re fever-free for 24 hours.

Fifth Disease:

Caused by a virus and causes a bright red rash on the cheeks and sometimes a lacy looking rash on the torso. Symptoms may also include a mild fever, runny nose and more rarely, joint pain. If you are expecting, let your ob-gyn know you have been exposed to Fifth Disease, since it can cause pregnancy complications.

Roseola:

Roseola is a viral illness most common in children between the ages of 6 months and 3 years. It starts out as a fever and a mild upper respiratory infection. The fever may run about a week and reach 103 degrees or higher. A pinkish red rash appears just as the fever breaks and spreads from the torso to the rest of the body.
