The lockdowns have had a significant impact on the meals we have been able to offer this year and several have needed to be rescheduled.

the long dry summer has confused many plants, shrubs and trees, which are bursting into leaf and flowering earlier than usual - a disaster if we get any heavy frosts.

Tina Peters gave a demo on propagating and growing African violets. Members went away delighted with the potted-up specimens and new knowledge to keep them alive and hopefully thriving. African violets are no longer the “granny house plants” they once were. Some of you might have seen Tina’s article on African violets in the March edition of the NZ Gardener magazine. We are all so proud one of our own is contributing to the Gardener. Well done Tina.

The afternoon saw us visiting Monica & John Comrie’s garden, followed by a stroll up to view the volcanic crater.

Tina Peters gave us an interesting demonstration on how to assemble and plant a succulent tower and a decorative succulent bowl. The completed items went home with Linda Wilkinson for her recent birthday and to Heather & Syd Ware on celebrating their 56th wedding anniversary. Congratulations to all.

Members divided up the surplus succulents to go away amd make their own succulent creations. There seems to be a bit of a rush on terracotta pots in our local garden centres following this event. We followed this up by a greenery-based arrangement session in which Jeanette Head was the demonstrator. Members produced beautiful arrangements to take away and enjoy or give to someone.

A plant purchasing trip to Kerikeri was arranged, with several carloads of members armed with credit cards, empty car boots, and dressed for the weather. A great day was had by all, with a variety of plants and other items coming home with us. We intend to repeat this trip in September.

We will again be doing our posy making in the Whangarei Public Library for the Lonely Bouquet. There will be beautiful posies being made free to a good home. Details will be announced on Facebook.

we meet every second Thursday at the Complex, starting at 10:30am with a cuppa and cake available, then meeting from 11:00am. Lunch involves another cuppa & homemade food and our ever-popular sales table for unbelievably cheap plants. Following this we have an activity and/or visit.

Many of our members are not serious gardeners but come along for the fun, friendship, and food. The gardening bit is an extra bonus and we are always pleased to see new faces. Follow us on Facebook.

Our club hosted the Mangakahia Open at the end of July and will host the Northland Champ of Champions tournament from 4th to 6th September. Come along and watch the best battle it out for Northland grade titles and trophies.

Our D grade Men’s team are currently training hard in preparation for the national tournament they will compete in being held in Blenheim at the end of September.

We have had good numbers attending our Kiwi Squash programme on Monday afternoons. We now have a keen group of Juniors playing Squash and entering tournaments which is great to see.

We congratulate Amy Brown, who was a member of the WGHS Squash team who won the NZ Secondary School Girls Title held earlier in the month, a fantastic achievement from one of our own.

Our Club continues to grow and we welcome anyone who wants to give it a go. It’s a great game for fun and fitness and we have an awesome Club spirit.

The Senior team enjoyed some good games this season and were unlucky to just miss out on the top 4 play-offs. They have developed a positive team culture and have an excellent base on which to build for the 2021 season.

The IMB team are progressing well and are currently sitting 5th on the table with another round to be played.

The junior grades got underway on the 25th July with two successful Club days to start the season. It was a great spectacle of rugby to have every team from Mangakahia playing - from under 6’s right through to our Senior team.

The Rugby Country Meal will be on the 25th September, it’s a catch up due to Covid, so save the date.

Touch Rugby will start again Term 4. Registrations take place at the end of September, so keep an eye on the Mangakahia Rugby Facebook page for more details.

What a busy year it has been here for Poroti School welcoming many new students and families. With new signs, new uniforms, new play equipment and classroom resources – thanks to grants from Oxford Trust - our school is buzzing with excitement.

We have also welcomed two new teacher aides, so with four teachers, three teacher aides, and learning support educators, we have the support to give each student the individual care and learning support they need.

Mangakahia Lions have been quiet with the COVID-19 virus shutting us down. However, we are back up and running now and rearing to go.

Over the next few weeks we are helping with the annual citrus collection to send down to the South Island to help them taste sub-tropical fruit.

Our annual speech contest for Valley School pupils is being held at Mangakahia Complex on September 17th and we have a Lions ten pin bowling title to defend against other local Lions Clubs.

As you read this newsletter you may have noticed the flowering ‘King Alfred’ daffodils planted around the trees on the loop. Last month saw us plant 500 bulbs around the Gleditsias planted in an avenue opposite the Poroti School field gate.

This winter we have planted another 300 ‘King Alfred’ bulbs, around the Gleditsia trees on the Kerehunga roadside, and all along the back of the sports fields. Next year will be the big plant with us planning to plant thousands of bulbs, with the aim being with thousands of daffodils flowering all at once, we can host a “daffodil day” event in the coming years.

To do this we will be making much larger mulched areas to plant the bulbs. If you are interested with helping with the work, providing mulch, contributing towards the cost of the daffodil bulbs, or planting next autumn, please let us know.
