Welcome to the 2024 Tackle Special, dedicated exclusively to the latest releases from tackle and fishing electronic companies. This edition covers 150 new products from 45 different brands, bringing you releases from the ICAST show in America and the AFTA tackle show here in Australia. We showcase the freshest releases from these influential exhibitions, although much of the gear featured is still on its way to stores or just hitting shelves now.

While the anticipation can be daunting, this issue offers a sneak peek into what’s on the horizon, potentially influencing your future purchases or upgrades. This year, the industry impresses with a wealth of highquality gear, notably more rods than reels—something we enthusiastically embrace, considering the rod’s pivotal role in any setup.

The range of gear has been diverse with no clear trends which is also fresh. From trout and estuary gear to heavier gear designed for cod, barra, and offshore fishing, there’s a a good mix of what looks to be effective product for anglers all around the country.

We’re eager to field-test this gear on the water and share our experiences with you. It’s crucial to highlight that all the products featured here are previews provided directly by the companies themselves—not reviews. Our reviews, in contrast, involve rigorous testing: every product must perform on the water, be photographed, and demonstrate its ability to catch fish before we publish our findings. While we’ve already begun testing some of the new arrivals, expect detailed reviews to roll out over the next 12 months, starting from our next edition.

TALKING WILD TROUT

Freshwater fishers can learn more about Victoria’s wild trout fisheries at a free one-day conference in Mansfield on Saturday 21 September 2024. Victorian Fisheries Authority (VFA) CEO Travis Dowling said the annual Talk Wild Trout conference attracts anglers, scientists, guides and opinion leaders to share the latest in research, fisheries management, habitat improvements, and trout trends. The conference will be at the Mansfield Performing Arts Centre, between 9am and 4pm. Tea, coffee and lunch will be provided. We’ve smashed our previous fish stocking record of 10 million by stocking more than 11.5 million fish in the 2023/24 season.

That’s more fish stocking than anywhere else in Australia and a whopping 29.5 million in the three years to July 2024. No other state comes close!

Eleven species in all: Murray cod, golden perch, Australian bass, silver perch, estuary perch, Macquarie perch, trout cod, dusky flathead, brown trout, rainbow trout, Chinook salmon.

It’s all thanks to your recreational fishing licence fees and the Victorian Government’s $96 million Go Fishing and Boating Plan.

YO-ZURI HYBRID FC/MONO

Yo-Zuri Hybrid is the first and only fishing line that molecularly bonds nylon and fluorocarbon during extrusion. Hybrid’s extrusion process creates a true molecular blend of the two materials that is 100% waterproof with the abrasion resistance and sensitivity of fluorocarbon but incorporating the flexibility and stretch of nylon. Essentially you’re getting a more sensitive line with less stretch than mono, with the added durability of it being waterproof and resistant to UV rays and salt exposure. During testing I noted it was definitely more sensitive than mono and cast further. It’s soft, lacks memory and is less prone to line twist. It also seems to sink better and is less prone to bowing in wind and current flow. You may be asking why you wouldn’t just use fluorocarbon as it seems to offer the same benefits. The answer is that fluorocarbon stretches to a point where at a molecular level it breaks and weakens; Hybrid doesn’t do that thanks to its nylon blend, so you can be confident that after you’ve battled with a large fish you can keep fishing without the risk of it breaking.
