Welcome to C7

It was wonderful to welcome the new Cohort 7 to Honywood on Thursday 3rd September.

The transi on was as smooth as we could make it, having the first two days in school completely without any other learners in the building.

Naturally there were nerves and an cipa on, but the Cohort have quickly found their feet - finding their way around the school, using their Ipads for work and metables, ge ng to know dierent teachers and teaching styles.

I have been impressed at how well they have integrated themselves into Honywood life and how their confidence is already developing, and I look forward to watching their progress and helping them achieve their goals over the course of their me with us. Well done C7 - keep up the fantas c eort !

POST 16

OPTIONS AND APPLICATION PROCESS We are now working on an individual basis with C11 to prepare them for the post-16 applica on process. This involves learners making decisions about where they would like to study or train for (at least) the next two years. During this process we also discuss Higher Educa on (University) and encourage learners to begin to inves gate courses connected to their career goals.

From C9, learners have received informa on about the choices they have to make this year and an essen al part of this decision making process is to have a Careers Educa on, Informa on, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) interview this term; these started earlier this week and will con nue un l the end of November.

You will find some informa on with regards to local educa on and training providers, including contact details and open events. The majority of events happen during this current term. It is important that all learners a end some, if not all events to enable them to make an informed decision about their post-16 op ons. Parents/Carers are also ac vely encouraged to a end, as this will allow for posi ve conversa ons at home, in an informed and knowledgeable manner. Given the current restric ons, many providers have moved their events online and this should facilitate a ‘shared’ approach for families.

(Please note that open event dates, mes and loca ons may be subject to change, therefore please check with the individual provider for details).

In addi on, applica on deadlines vary between providers, some are as early as 1st December 2020. Some applica ons can be made from now, with interviews and oers for places given on a condi onal basis when predicted grades are received. Exam Special Exam checklist for studentss

Did you know?

Before each exam, be sure to check: The date, time and location of the exam (particularly if itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in the morning or afternoon)

The equipment you need for the exam (pencils, black pens, ruler, calculator, maths set etc). Remember to bring it with you.

If you are allowed to bring a calculator into the exam, check that: it is an approved model the batteries are working anything stored on it is cleared parts such as cases, lids or covers are removed

If you have a case for your equipment (i.e. pens, pencils etc), it is transparent

To keep exam papers confidential until students sit them, all exams in a given subject qualification are taken at the same time nationwide.

The exam boards and Ofqual, the exams regulator, monitor social media throughout the exam period to make them aware of any breaches of confidentiality.

Exam rules apply to every school and college throughout the country, and checks are made to ensure the rules are followed.

You must not take any exam stationery with you out of the exam hall once the exam has finished, including question papers, answer booklets (used or unused) or rough work.

There is no label on any drinks bottle you intend to bring in

Your mobile phone and any web-enabled devices are switched off and stored in line with advice from your Exams Officer

If you have your phone in the exam room, you could be disqualified, regardless of whether or not it is switched off or in aeroplane mode. You could even be disqualified from all your subjects.

Top ঞps to survive the exam season Ge ng ready for exams can bring out many emo ons, ranging from excitement to apprehension, and ela on to exhaus on. However you feel, these top ps will help you to approach the exams in a posi ve manner.

1. Manage your ঞme Don’t leave it un l the last minute. It’s widely accepted that this is not the best way to approach an exam. To help sort out your me management, set up a metable for your study. Write down how many exams you have and the days on which you have to sit them. Then organise your study accordingly. You may want to give some exams more study me than others, so find a balance that you feel comfortable with.

2. Organise your study space Make sure you have enough space to spread your textbooks and notes out. Have you got enough light? Is your chair comfortable? Are your computer games out of sight? Try and get rid of all distrac ons, and make sure you feel as comfortable and able to focus as much as possible.

For some learners, this may mean almost complete silence, for others, background music helps. Some of us need everything completely dy and organised in order to concentrate, while others thrive in a more clu ered environment. Think about what works for you, and take the me to get it right.

3. Use flow charts and diagrams Visual aids can be really helpful when revising. At the start of a topic, challenge yourself to write down everything you already know about a topic - and then highlight where the gaps lie. Closer to the exam, condense your revision notes into onepage diagrams. Ge ng your ideas down in this brief format can then help you to quickly recall everything you need to know during the exam. Flash cards are useful for learning the rela onship between two pieces of informa on - write a ques on or key term on the front and then the answer or defini on on the back.

4. Pracঞce past papers One of the most effec ve ways to prepare for exams is to prac ce taking past papers. This helps you get used to the format of the ques ons, and - if you me yourself - can also be good prac ce for making sure you spend the right amount of me on each sec on.

5. Organise study groups with friends Get together with friends for a study session. You may have ques ons that they have the answers to and vice versa. As long as you make sure you stay focused on the topic for an agreed amount of me, this can be one of the most effec ve ways to challenge yourself. Explain an answer to a ques on to them. That will help you to get it clear in your head, and also to highlight any areas where you need more work.

6. Take regular breaks Studies have shown that for longterm reten on of knowledge, taking regular breaks really helps. Everyone’s different, so develop a study rou ne that works for you. If you study be er in the morning, start early before taking a break at lunch me. Or, if you’re more produc ve later in the day, take a larger break earlier on so you’re ready to se le down come evening.

Remember that being well hydrated is essen al for your brain to work at its best. Make sure you keep drinking plenty of water throughout your revision, and also on the exam day.

7. Get plenty of sleep Ge ng enough sleep is vital to feeling and performing your best. A good night of sleep will help you feel more energe c, alert, focused and upbeat.

Amelie Cooper and Sophia Cooper Last weekend, Amelie and Sophia competed in the Hever Castle Triathlon Weekend and kindly chose to raise money for Honywood. Sophia took part in a triathlon on Sunday and Amelie took part in a a swimonly event on Saturday.

It was cold, it was windy, the lake and river were â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;murkyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. But both girls really enjoyed the experience. A huge Thank You to the girls!

The Jack Petchey award is now up and running a er our lockdown and we have our four winners from the previous term and one from this term. Well done to five of our Lead Learners who are recipients of the award! The award winners from last term will be using their award money collec vely for a project that the Lead Learners will carry out. Our award winner Charlie, from this term, will be dona ng his award to support the Science team. Well done to everyone, well deserved. During Lockdown, our Lead Learners, Sienna Gray, Hannah Pya , Hannah Read and Emily Pya demonstrated outstanding leadership. Working with staďŹ&#x20AC; remotely, the girls coordinated the crea on of a video with the Learner Leadership Team to launch a pen pal project for Year 6, giving them the opportunity to contact the Lead Learners about moving to secondary school. The email was monitored and ques ons answered during lockdown and throughout the summer break. The Lead Learners made a transi on video, a virtual tour of the school which was shared with year 6, and aided with the year 6 transi on days in September.

Finally, the girls were also part of the team who came into school to renovate the front entrance to the school, pain ng fences, and crea ng borders. Outstanding contribu on to the school community.

Charlie has been nominated for his outstanding commitment to his school work throughout lockdown as well as carrying out his lead learner du es.

In addi on to this Charlie studied for his Air Law exam in October ready for his 1st solo flight....nerve racking moment. He also worked towards becoming a Senior Corporal at Air Cadets which he has now successfully been promoted to. During lockdown, he supported the local community delivering the daily gaze e to households in Coggeshall, whilst also shopping for his customers who where isola ng, many of which are elderly.

What do you like most about your job?

Regularly meeting the learners and helping them with their queries/problems and generally forming great relationships with them. I enjoy being a friendly face that the learners recognise on a daily basis.

What three words would you use to describe your job role?

Challenging, rewarding and responsive.

Given the chance, who would you like to be for a day?

Lewis Hamilton. I would love to zip round Silverstone in an F1 car!

If you had to teach a class one thing, what would you teach them?

Needlework and textiles. As a keen wardrobe mistress for a theatre company – I would love to teach the learners about how rewarding it is to see costumes you have made being worn during live performances. A particular favourite of mine was the red dress worn by “Annie” as I had to make this within one day of the opening night! I also had to make a half camouflage half dress shirt!

What was the best book or series that you’ve ever read/watched?

The Crown!

What’s your favourite line from a film?

In Pretty Woman where Julia Roberts goes back to the shop where they refused to serve her and says “Big Mistake. Big. Huge”. Goes to prove you should never judge people.

If you could only travel to one other country, which country would you choose?

I’d love to go to Australia. Such a vast country of so many different landscapes.

What’s your favourite family tradi on?

Carol singing with the family at Christmas.

What is special about the place you grew up?

I grew up in a small village outside Maldon. It had a lovely sense of community where everyone knew everyone and I always felt safe and secure there. I have very happy memories of my time there.

By their nature, AI voice assistants involve the collection of large amounts data. How this is stored and the uses to which it is put has aroused growing concern. Experts also worry about who has access to voice recordings, which in 2019 the company admitted sometimes included employees of Amazon and its commercial partners.

There is also the more general anxiety that internet voice assistants might record private conversations and not only commands or questions.

The devices and their background services are another worry, which can have software vulnerabilities that make them insecure in complex ways. In 2020, for instance, researchers discovered that the services to which Echo products connect were insecure, potentially allowing hackers to access personal information such as voice conversations. In 2017, researchers were able to directly hack an Amazon Echo to send audio to attackers. Amazon has a good record of fixing security problems when they are discovered but it is never possible to find every problem.

Using Alexa as a speaker to play your favourite songs is one of the most popular uses for the device. However, without any parental controls in place, Alexa won’t filter the lyrics so it’s possible that children could hear something they shouldn’t. Similarly, Alexa isn’t always able to identify who or what age the person is who is issuing a voice command so if children ask a question which might not be age-appropriate, the chances are they’re likely to get an age-inappropriate answer.

In a 2019 report published by the Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation, concerns were raised on the disruptive effect that voice assistants and smart speakers, such as Alexa, were having on the way that children interact with technology.

From building sentiment and forming relationships which could encourage them to overshare personal details, to a fear of consuming content driven by commercial algorithms and an inability to assess reliability, how Alexa operates could considerably change children’s relationship with technology in both the short and long term.
