Honywood Tours

“It was great being able to give some of our future Honywood learners a chance to immerse themselves in the school environment and see what we are all about. I am envious of the exci ng journey they have before them.”

PERSONAL TOURS Circumstances this year have meant that we were not able to offer our usual Open Evening event. Instead, we offered our prospec ve families the opportunity to book a personal socially distanced tour of Honywood throughout the month of October.

The tours were hughly popular and worked well under the current Covid-19 restric ons, but ul mately, we believe they were successful because they offer the best, transparent, 360-degree view of the school. We provided a tour tailored to each individual family, alongside our Lead Learners and a member of our Senior Leadership team, giving parents and prospec ve learners the opportunity to see the school in ac on and experience the unique atmosphere at Honywood. One of our biggest values here is our emphasis on a family ethos and that is very hard to explain on paper or even demonstrate in an open day.

THE £10 CHALLENGE 2019/20 Between October and February, the Business Studies Department in partnership with St Helena Hospice, presented learners from Cohort 9 and 10 with the £10 Challenge. Thirty four learners across the two cohorts volunteered to take on the challenge, in which they were required to turn their team’s £10 investment into as much as they could in just 12 weeks through their own entrepreneurial endeavour. This was a county wide challenge that the school has been taking part in for a number of years, and in which learners from Honywood have always been one of, if not the top fundraiser out of every school involved.

Many of the other schools that took part in the challenge integrated this into their curriculum, making it compulsory for learners to be involved.

Honywood learners were presented with the challenge along with a simple support structure for guidance and a developed understanding of why the cause was worthy of their efforts.

Learners from Honywood raised an outstanding £2,701.77 for the fantas c cause, se ng a new all- me record for the challenge here at Honywood! The winning team (Pacey Wells, Jonathan Kilgour, Alex Larner and Josh Taylor) made a total of £1,224.20 by se ng up a website to promote and collect dona ons for Pacey to have his head shaved. The team did an amazing job of raising the profile and effec vely adver sing the event, which led to the team

being able to generate such an impressive sum of money. A special men on for Pacey Wells is definitely in order too – for commi ng so thoroughly to such a great cause. The team that finished in 2nd (Corey Bowers and Beth Cu er) made £704.14, with the team in 3rd place (Emily Champion and Xanthe Goodman) earning £485.00. Xanthe explained how the team approached the challenge: ‘We set up a JustGiving Page for family and friends to donate to. I shared personal stories about how St Helena helped my family. Emily and I shared the links around on Facebook. With dona ons alone, we raised over £100. Then, in the half term, we washed cars, did babysi ng, and general cleaning for extra pennies on the side. Then we contacted local businesses about dona ng raffle prizes for a Christmas Raffle. We had over 12 prizes and sold over 1500 ckets to people in school and outside of school. It was a really good experience and I really enjoyed doing it with Emily.’

A big congratula ons to these three teams, and a massive well done must also go to all the other teams as well. You have all once again, highlighted that Honywood learners are amongst the most proac ve, entrepreneurial, selfless and crea ve in the county.

Family Learning Team Wellbeing During our me in lockdown, The Family Learning Team created a wellbeing site that all learners in school have access to. We have created an icon that appears on all school iPads so that the learners have the resource at their finger ps.

We all know that the pressures our young people face these days are enormous, not only in an academic se ng but also on a social media pla orm. All of these pressures can mount up which may cause stress, anxiety, low mood, and in rare cases, can lead to a young person self harming.

The wellbeing site gives advice, strategies and suppor ve apps/websites that young people can use to alleviate symptoms of stress, anxiety, low mood and self harm.

The websites and apps are healthy and safe to use and have been made available in order to prevent young people seeking support through less favourable channels.

Lots of the work we do with young people

centres around teaching them to take control of their emo ons and showing them healthy ways to do this. The best me to learn strategies to help you cope in a me of crisis is when you are calm and relaxed.

We have been ac vely promo ng use of the wellbeing app in school and would ask that you take some me to have a look through it with your child so that they are aware of the support, should they ever need it.

Congratula ons to the following learners who were successful in their applica on to be part of the Brilliant Club Scholars Programme this year. The Scholars Programme provides learners from non-selec ve state schools the opportunity to work with a PhD researcher to experience university-style learning. It helps them to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence to secure a place at a highly-selec ve university. Congratula ons to Finley Basford in C8 who has been awarded the Jack Petchey award for October.

Finley had to go the extra mile to support his sister through some real diďŹƒcul es during lockdown. He con nues to face adversity on his return to school but has been trying really hard to keep up with his school work.

Finley comes in to school with a posi ve mindset everyday demonstra ng excep onal resilience.

Learner Achievements Corey Bowers (10CTh) Congratula ons to Corey Bowers in C10. Corey entered a wri ng compe on earlier this year and received no fica on this week that he will be published. Corey wrote a paranormal story and submi ed it to Young Writers. His piece will be published next month. Well done Corey!

Lauren Evans (11EPe) A er Lauren’s me represen ng Essex she underwent trials and was successful enough to be picked to join the London Pulse Netball Hub, this is a huge achievement and very well deserved as she has worked so hard to keep up her fitness and her netball skills even during the long lockdown.

Lauren will be training at the Copperbox Arena in Olympic Park and hopefully one day will be playing for the Super League teams there.

Ethan Harding (11KGu) Well done to Ethan Harding in 11KGu who hiked the virtual London Marathon on Sunday 4th October, the full 26.2miles, suppor ng his dad! Also well done to Ethan's mum who ran the virtual marathon! Quite an achievement, well done Ethan and family.

Former Learner News Josh Ambrose and Jake Banyard (le Honywood in July 2019) are both con nuing their spor ng dreams and educa on at the Sudbury Football Academy. On 19th October, they progressed to the 4th round of the FA Youth Cup with a fiercely contested away match at Redbridge FC. Jake Banyard scored the opening goal in the first half with Josh Ambrose scoring the winning goal in the last few minutes of the game. Well done to both the boys.

A Day in the Life of a Trainee Teacher It’s been a very long my favourite part of the job so far. For a few years I had been an Exam Invigilator.

Now, you might think that pacing round a sports hall, watching young people sit their exams and occasionally handing out the odd ruler and pen wouldn’t provide much incen ve for becoming a teacher. I was the bad guy, ensuring everyone was adhering to the rules, without any of the goodwill that would have come from actually teaching them the knowledge they needed to pass the exam in the first place. Yet it was taking on this role that made me believe that I might make a half-decent teacher. Last summer I worked with a small group of learners who, for various reasons, couldn’t sit their exams in the Main Hall. Before the start and a er the end of each exam, I was able to work up a bit of a rapport with this eclec c group – making sure they were ready, that phones were turned off, and that they had all the equipment they needed, as well as handing out ssues for sniffy noses and the occasional teary eye. At the end of the exam season, several of them came up and thanked me for making what was a daun ng and uncomfortable experience a li le more bearable. It was a nice feeling - the glorious glow that comes from being appreciated.

That is what I’m taking with me as I plough through the lesson plans, acquire resources, pore over various academic ar cles and books, pu ng together the research project for my first PGCE disserta on, a end staff training and mentor mee ngs, and fill in forms – so many forms!

I will no longer be at Honywood a er Christmas, but it won’t be because I’ve thrown in the towel. I’ll be at my next placement – working my socks off, but happy in the hope that the next educa onal glow will be just round the corner.

SILENT READING TIME On Monday or Tuesday a ernoons, during Learning Session 5, all learners will be taking part in some focused reading me. This is a me for all learners to stop what they are doing, pick up a book and engage in some quiet reading. Reading has many benefits such as: reducing stress, improving vocabulary, developing empathy and increasing knowledge, social and cultural capitals. We hope that learners will enjoy this me, begin to appreciate the power of reading and will establish a reading habit.

It would be wonderful if learners can ensure that they always have a book in their bag from now on - you never know when you might get a spare ten minutes to do some reading! Learning group leaders will be able to direct them to a list of free online texts if they do not have a book of their own.
