With only two weeks left we are rapidly approaching the end of the academic year. I don’t know about you but I can’t wait for the summer holiday. I remember, when I first got into teaching, that slightly relaxed feeling that crept in as we approached the summer.

However, lately I have noticed that the changes to the education system no longer afford us such luxuries; every second counts when it comes to learning. These last few weeks are vital in ensuring we enter the summer fully prepared to begin in September. Of course that includes making the most of our learning time, but it should also be about embracing the many additional opportunities we offer to grow as an individual as well as showcasing the results of the last year of learning.

Showcasing was definitely exemplary when I visited the cohort 8 science fayre. Speaking to the learners about their theories and hypotheses was brilliant. I learnt a great deal about: bacteria; the three-second rule; keeping bananas fresh; pain thresholds, and the coordination of puppies compared to adult dogs. Did you know that wrapping elastic bands around the top of a bunch of bananas keeps them fresher for longer?

This week we have had our Primary Learning Days. Thank you for the positive feedback I have received about these as well as the suggestions on how we can continue to develop this provision for our year 5’s. I also enjoyed a tour of Great Bradfords Junior School in Braintree. I saw the year 5’s in action and met some of the current year 6 learners who will be joining us in September. Thank you Great Bradfords, your children are great. I wish you luck with your year 6 Greek production.

Last week I had the opportunity to visit the cohort 11 prom. It was wonderful to see everyone at the end of their Honywood journey as fully formed young adults ready for their next step in life. Five years at Honywood had certainly created a group of happy people ready to take on the world. Juxtaposing this event with my experiences of year 5 day and primary school highlights for me the immense growth and development that happens to our children as they journey through secondary school. I can’t wait to welcome our next cohort of year 7 learners as they begin their five year journey with us.

C8 Science Fayre

C8 staged their first Science Fayre. In groups, they were given the opportunity to research a topic that they found interesting and over the past few weeks have carried our research, experiments and independent study to formulate answers to questions they posed such as “is smiling contagious?” “is a dog or a puppies reaction time faster?” or “The mould experiment!”. On Wednesday they showcased their findings and the science behind it, and were asked to explain what they had found to a team of former learners who are currently studying science either at A level or degree. They were then judged on their research and winners will be announced soon! Well done to everyone, it was a fantastic fayre with some very interesting research!

Primary Learning Days On Tuesday 3rd and Thursday 5th July we welcomed almost 400 Cohort 5s into Honywood for another of our fantastic Primary Learning Days! The children completed investigations in History, Geography, Enterprise & Solutions, English, Modern Foreign Languages and Science to solve the mystery of ‘Who Killed James Bond?’.

With the C10 ambassadors on work experience and the C9s having their exam week, it was a rare opportunity for the C8s to step up and support the day. It will come as no surprise that our learners were outstanding representatives for our school and I would like to thank everyone involved for their hard work across these two days!

Harry Potter themed Activities Week

This summer enter the magical world of Honywood’s Harry Potter themed Summer Activity Week Honywood School are offering a fun and creative opportunity for Year 4, 5 and 6 learners from the surrounding areas.

Throughout the week there will be a range of sporting and creative activities that children will be able to experience and participate in including:  Team sports  Arts and creative activities  Dance and Drama

The Expressive Arts department are booking tickets for the Wizard of Oz at the Mercury this coming September. The trip is open to anyone.

The week will be run and delivered by Honywood staff and offers a fantastic opportunity to have fun, learn some new sports and be creative!  The dates of the course are Tuesday 24th to Thursday 26th July 2018.

 The days will run from 9.30am – 3.00pm with a supervised one hour lunch break.  Participants will need to bring a packed lunch for each day.

Pre-booking is essential as places are limited and will be offered on a first come-first served basis. Deadline date for applications 13th July 2018 Prices start from 1st Child £50 for three days £20 per day Siblings £45 for three days £18 per day
