It gives me great pleasure to share with you our core priorities for developing the school over the next few years; you will find a one-page summary of our school development plan on the next page.

I have talked in the past about a capital enhancing curriculum and my desire to create equity for all of our children. I believe that through our curriculum-based vision we will achieve this aim. As I outlined last week, our core values of trust, respect, equity and excellence will be at the heart of what we do.

Our vision is to connect with all of our communities and build equity and well-being for all our children. To imbue a sense of challenge and aspiration through the development of our core values so that all learners achieve happiness, social equity and economic well-being; now and in the future.

Our mission is to develop independence and resilience in all our learners and staff by creating a sense of community through deep and purposeful relationships and a culture of challenge, aspiration and innovation. Central to this aim is an entitlement to enrichment through a capital enhancing curriculum and the development of moral, social, cultural and knowledge capital. We are doing this so that our learners are fully prepared to embrace and positively contribute to society, now and in the future. As a result of our capital enhancing curriculum, they will achieve excellent academic and social outcomes when compared to their peers nationally.

Please take a look at the six capitals that form our development plan. Each one has a strategic intent – a statement that describes its aim. Within each of the capitals there are a number of core priorities that we will be tackling over the next year. There is of course much detail and planning sitting beneath this document, however, I hope that this plan will provide you with a clearer understanding of what we are trying to achieve. I like to think of capital in economic terms. If you have capital you have opportunity. You can leverage your capital to provide you with an advantage in life. That is my aim for our children: to be able to provide them with opportunity and leverage, so that they are able to embrace any and every occasion and ultimately have the edge; the advantage.

The development plan was created out of the feedback that learners, parents, staff and the community provided, and as such is a combination of all perspectives and is seeking to address the core issues that many of you highlighted.

Reading and the importance of books

I am delighted to tell you that I have been supporting the English department to raise the profile and value of reading and, just as importantly, of books themselves. I love books. I still have my own copies of Great Expectations and Lord of the Flies from when I studied them at GCSE. I love opening my old books and finding little notes I have written in the margins; it turns them from being generic books to my own personalised copies that represent my own unique understanding of them.

It is these memories that have prompted me to buy a GCSE text for every learner in year 9, 10 and 11. Shortly our English teachers will be handing out a copy of Macbeth, An Inspector Calls or a Christmas Carol to each learner. These books will be for learners to keep forever; to use to support their study of the text; to make notes and annotations in. They will form a key part of the literature learning journey, as well as the note making and revision process. We hope that everyone will value these books and keep them long after GCSE study. It will be important to not lose them as they will eventually contain valuable personalised notes. This

love of books has extended to staff as they too have just received their own staff learning library so that they can keep abreast of current educational theory and research; I hope to see them using this new knowledge to extend our learners in their learning.

I ended the week welcoming our newest cohort of learners and their families as part of our Intake Days and presentation evening. I enjoyed meeting the children and took time out to have a chat over lunch with them on Thursday just before I addressed them all via a short assembly. I am really looking forward to working with them all over the next five years.

A massively challenging play that really pushed them, and they were without exception spine-tingly awesome.

Intake Day As the Cohort 11’s started there penultimate week

of exams the future cohort 7 attended Honywood School on Tuesday and Thursday this week to meet their learning groups, their learning group leaders and become more familiar with the way in which learning happens at Honywood.

Tuesday saw the learners developing relationships between their learning group leaders and their peers whilst becoming aware of the learning attributes that will feature in the dual focus curriculum that the new cohort 7 will experience from September.

On Thursday the new generation of Honywood learners experienced 3 subject sessions across the school as a taster to know what to expect come September.

The afternoon started of the learning group challenges, where learners had to work as a team within their learning group to compete against other learning groups in the cohort across 8 different challenges.

The results of which will be revealed on the first day back.

The two days finished with a message of team work, the respect code and the pursuit of happiness delivered by Mr Scott and Mr Saunders.

Everyone that had the opportunity to work with next year’s Cohort 7 enjoyed the opportunity to get to know the learners and we look forward to welcoming them back in September.

C8 Netball

On Friday 25th May, 8EPe, 8KGu, 8HGi and 8KAr took part in the last instalment of the inter-learning group challenge. Overall, all Learning Groups played fantastically well with 8JHa winning the tournament.

Congratulations - it was well deserved! 8KGu came in as the runners-up, 8EPe in third and 8HGi in forth.

Well done to everyone who took part, it was an exciting game with incredibly close scores.

C7 Rounders The C7 girls had their first rounders match against Ramsey Academy. The girls started off the match batting, they all played really well but were quiet careful with their runs and seemed a little nervous. Once they started fielding they had shaken their nerves off and were really in the zone, supporting and encouraging each other well and the innings ended with a draw.

Moving on to the second innings the girls had gained their confidence and were winning points with their excellent timing and hits. Unfortunately in the last few bowls Ramsey gained extra points and the innings finished with Ramsey winning by 1 rounder.

Well done to all the girls: Rosie Waine, Emily Champion, Issy Corbett, Cherry Hodges, Erin Kinsella, Xanthe Goodman, Maisie Nixon, Marcia Swain, Lily Tilyard, Megan Walby and Basant Sherif and a extra well done to Lily who was voted Woman of the Match.

Drama Performance This week, learners in Cohort 9 and Cohort 10 performed their second solo play of Find Me by Olwen Wymark to a sold out audience. The cast and our lighting and sound technician were outstanding and demonstrated so much professionalism on the night and throughout the rehearsal period.

This play explored the views and attitudes towards mental health in a past era. This was an extremely challenging script which involved a lot of multi rolling and hard hitting content. The performances were amazing and the group should be congratulated on their acting skills and commitment to developing their understanding of Drama beyond the classroom. I am incredibly proud of the group!

Charity Events Lauren Baker (8HGi) with the help of her family held a fund raising Tea Party at the weekend in aid of Brainbow. Brainbow is a unique partnership between independent charities – Anna’s Hope, Camille’s Appeal, Tom’s Trust, and more recently, Joshua Tarrant Trust – working with Addenbrooke’s Hospital to fund and provide a pioneering rehabilitation service in the East of England for all children with brain tumours.

Lauren herself had a brain tumour and had surgery in summer 2017. Lauren wanted to hold an event to raise money for the charity and everyone who has helped her on her road to recovery so that they can continue to help other children.

Lauren's event raised an absolutely fantastic £900 for Brainbow!!

Massive Congratulations and Well Done to all involved.

Aimee Jones 10HTr Thank you very much for your wonderful hair donation. We can confirm that it has safely arrived!

Last year the charity gave away over 1,200 free real hair wigs to children. It is thanks to kind people like you that this was possible.

Enterprise & Solutions MLCs this week are available to C8 learners that would like help completing their ‘business board game’ project and any C7s that would like any extra guidance for their current ‘Designing a Business Magazine’ challenge.

Business Studies MLCs this week will be focused on helping C9s work through ‘case study 3’ or going over any aspects of the ‘Human Resources’ unit, as well as revising all aspects of the course for C10s as they work towards a full practice paper assessment.
