Headlines By James Saunders
Welcome back to the final part of the summer term; the summer holiday is near but there is still plenty to do. My priority this week has been getting into assemblies to talk to our learners about building Moral Capital - the set of shared habits, norms and values that make life possible. This forms the first part of our school development plan. I shared with them our core objective, that, day to day all learners and staff live through our core values and promote equity and well-being. I also shared our core values of Trust, Respect, Equity and Excellence. These values came out of the feedback I received from you all. I discussed how we will be able to live up to these values at school, in the community and beyond. Inevitably, when talking about the how to develop positive habits, norms and values in our community I quickly got onto our formal and informal rules, codes of politeness and respect code, which ultimately led me to the dress code I spoke about prior to half term as well as, the use of mobile phones. I believe mobile phones are a real distraction to society; they offer so many possibilities but are also responsible for many current societal issues. I recommend the research of the psychologist Professor Jean Twenge, whose work covers smartphones, teens and unhappiness. She makes clear links between the use of smartphones and issues with mental health and unhappiness; something I think we all probably hypothesised long before she proved it. To that end, come September, we will not expect to see learners with phones in their learning sessions. It is fine for them to bring their phone to school should they feel they need to, however, it should not be out in class. I thank you all in advance for your cooperation and support with this. If we are to tackle this global problem we must do so united together. I would like to thank St Peter’s - Coggeshall, Colne Engaine and Great Bradfords - Braintree for attending our primary headteacher meeting this week and Kelvedon Academy for visiting us on Monday as part of their research into challenging and extended learning. In both forums we discussed how we could continue to work together to learn from each other and provide opportunities to prepare children for secondary school learning. I would also like to thank Earls Colne primary school for allowing me to visit them and learn about the wonderful children that will be making the transition to Honywood. Next week will be our intake days and evening for all the current year six children who have chosen Honywood for their secondary school. I am really looking forward to meeting our next cohort of learners and their parents as well as sharing the exciting journey that the children are about to embark upon. Holidays and absence during term time We are now firmly into holiday season and I have received many requests to take learners out during term time. May I remind you that exceptional circumstances means exactly that – exceptional. Regular summer holidays, whether won in a competition, bought by a relative or taken because the child has not had a holiday for many years are not generally considered exceptional and are unlikely to be marked as authorised. Any absence during term time will have an impact on a child’s learning. Research states that just 14 days over a two-year period can have a negative effect on progress and learning. Collaboration and partnerships – Thank you Kelvedon Academy Our approach to learning at Honywood continues to evolve as we learn more about ‘learning’ ourselves. We continue to develop a better awareness, appreciation and a far more in depth understanding of what learning is, enabling us to empower young people to become the best version of themselves. We continue to believe that through learning, individuals should be offered the opportunity to become happy and successful with a dual focus. Our aim is for young people to view themselves as mathematicians, scientists, artists, historians etc. when studying and when they engage in a learning experience in school they should be encouraged to view the world through these lenses, interpreting aspects of the world by thinking, for example like a mathematician. This approach provides rich experiences to develop subject skills, knowledge and understanding. Individuals should also be encouraged to consider how they are developing with regard to their attributes, characteristics and dispositions. When learning is designed it should aim to ignite intrigue, engage individuals with a personal connection and provide a challenge that motivates and enthuses their curiosity. During the study phase of learning, youngsters should be absorbed by the experience through carefully considered activation, opportunities to craft a response and have the time to review and make improvement. Finally, an enriched learning opportunity provides the time to reflect on the growth and development that has occurred. By using the simple framework of where was I, where am I and where could I be, individuals are able to gain ownership, feel responsibility and develop autonomy of their own learning journey. They become aware and comfortable with who there are and own who they become. We had the opportunity to showcase our approach to learning authentically when we were visited by three colleagues from Kelvedon Academy on Monday 4th June. This was a mutually beneficial learning experience, as the focus of their visit was to investigate a research focus they had created. Their goal was ‘To investigate independent led challenges versus given challenges - which have greater impact upon the learner?’ This was the perfect opportunity for our learners to demonstrate how they respond to challenge. As well as visiting four different subjects and age groups the visiting colleagues also met with teachers from Honywood to discuss their research focus. I hope to continue this collaboration and anticipate that as part of the research we spend some time dual planning, focusing particularly on learning Mathematics. Mr Rawlings

C7 Bikeability
On Monday the 4th June, 13 C7 learners had the fantastic opportunity to take part in a level 1 bikeability course at Braintree BMX club. The purpose of the morning was to improve their bike riding confidence before going to Danbury in a couple of weeks’ time. After a rather excited mini-bus journey, silence descended as we entered the BMX track. However, following a safety briefing and familiarisation of the equipment, it was all action for 2hrs of fun! It was fair to say that some of the riders were less than confident initially, but after some expert tuition from a former British Champion (head coach of the current regional and national club champions BRAINTREE BULLETS) Julian Allen, the whole group made outstanding progress in a really short space of time. Initially struggling to balance and ride in a straight line, the group ended up weaving/Limbo-ing and even tackling the very tricky ‘rhythm section’ in the final straight of the track. Amazing! Changing Information
Please ensure that all learners come prepared for the day.
Learners competing in the LS1 field events (C8 and C9) can should arrive in PE kit. Learners competing in the LS2 field events (C7 and C10) need to change at break. Learners running in finals in the afternoon should get changed during lunch time. If learners ARE competing in the afternoon they can remain in PE kit. If learners ARE NOT competing in the afternoon they will need to change in to school uniform. Please can all learners who use the changing rooms remember that these will not be locked so they will need keep their valuable items safe.
Other Information All learning resources and equipment should be brought for all learning sessions in case of poor weather. Learners must report to learning sessions and registrations at stated times. All learners must remain in the allocated area with their learning group leader unless competing. Track athletes must report to the marshalling area prior to each event. Listen to announcements. Any learners involved in 2 events in the morning must report to each event. All athletes must wear normal summer kit – white top & socks, blue shorts. All learners to bring clothing appropriate for the weather on the day. Athletes should bring a drink and inhaler if they need one.

My Learning Choices Enterprise & Solutions MLCs this week are available to C8 learners that would like help completing their ‘business board game’ project and any C7s that would like any extra guidance for their current ‘Designing a Business Magazine’ challenge.
