Revision With only 4 school days to go until C10 youngsters sit their mock examinations and 24 school days until current C11 sit their written GCSE examinations, many of whom have already completed their practical elements of these, it is crucial that youngsters are deep into their subject revision to ensure they are fully prepared for these formal assessments. Teachers have been supporting youngsters with examination techniques to ensure they can be as successful as can be. Can I stress the importance of quality revision. Reading through notes with music playing in the background, the television or games console on, and a mobile phone in a person’s possession is strongly not recommended. By putting these distractions aside the time spent has been proven to be more purposeful according to all research. By having the self-discipline to leave these behind for small periods of time, youngsters will create a more focused environment, thereby being much more likely to succeed. The following strategies are recommended to improve memory, mood and concentration; Place a mobile phone out of site and ideally in another room. In a recent study researchers found that even the site of a phone was enough to reduce a person’s ability to concentrate on the task at hand. Eat regularly and don’t skip meals. Research has found that skipping breakfast significantly reduces concentration and the ability to recall key information Self-testing. One of the most effective ways to develop memory recall is by testing yourself. Making effective use of subject audits and practice papers highlights gaps in knowledge. Alongside this, remember to quiz yourself after each period of revision. Teaching someone else requires a thorough understanding of the material learnt. This has been proven as a successful way to help aid memory and recall. Exercise and ensure you are getting fresh air regularly. You cannot work all day every day. Exercise is proven to reduce anxiety and help people deal better with stress. Getting enough sleep. This is important to us all but especially when the need to concentrate is heightened. A regular bedtime and the discipline to not be on a mobile phone in bed will improve the quality of sleep someone is getting. Here are a few tips for parent / careers on supporting youngsters and their revision; One of the most important things do to is to show interest in what your youngster is doing. Look to praise them for their efforts. Ask what is going well and what they are having problems with. Encourage and support your youngster to make a plan. They may respond with ‘I’m not in the mood to revise now’ but evidence suggest this leads to little work being completed. By making a revision plan, a good balance between work and personal time can be achieved. Short 20 minute bursts of high quality revision work best. You may face resistance and disagreements but under no circumstance would it be recommended for any youngster to have their phone in their possession. Revising whilst texting, checking social media or instant messaging will lead to poor retention of learning. Revising in front of the TV is also a big no! Expect outburst and mood swings due to their examination anxieties. Some will cope better than others but all youngsters need to know they have support from you.
Parental/carer engagement is proven to be one of the key factors in securing higher achievement for youngsters. Can I thank you all kindly for all your efforts through the examination period. Being a parent myself I understand it isn’t always easy but with our support, care and attention they are in a far better place than if they didn’t have us at all. Free School Meals You may be aware that there are changes to the legislation for free school meal eligibility coming into effect from April 1st.
The changes follow a consultation carried out by the Government to introduce a threshold for Universal Credit claimants. The outcome of this consultation was that a threshold of £7,400 will be introduced. This means that if a family is in receipt of Universal Credit and their annual income is £7,400 or less, then their child will be eligible for a free school meal. There are no other changes to the normal criteria for free school meal eligibility. “A Night at the Movies” On Tuesday evening learners performed ‘A Night at the Movies’, a journey of Music, Dance and Drama performances from movies, musicals and stage from the past and present day. The learners that performed on Tuesday evening showed the dedication and hard work that went into creating the performance. We are incredibly proud of their commitment and the level of thought that they have put in to there performance. The high level performances featured in the show did not happen by accident. They are the result of each individuals commitment, determination, hard work and grit in perfecting their craft. It is the countless hours spent practising, rehearsing, reflecting and refining and then even more rehearsing! As fathers, mothers, grandparents and carers you have seen the amount of time that the young people have dedicated in bettering themselves and their performance. We are honoured and proud to provide them with a forum with which to showcase their talents. Talent is created, not something you are born with. These learners have it in abundance as a results of the attitudes and attributes they possess and develop at home and here at Honywood. Thanks must go to all involved in the production, as with out everyones help the performance wouldn’t be what it is. We are so grateful for everyones time and energy. We must thank all of the learners, as without their commitment, dedication and enthusiasm there would not have been such an amazing show to see!
Onatti Productions On Tuesday 20th March we welcomed Raul and Carla from Onatti Productions who performed a Spanish play entitled “La Case Encantada “ ( The Haunted House ) to our GCSE Spanish learners from Cohorts 9,10 and 11. The intention was to immerse our learners into 60 minutes of intense Spanish language, thereby identifying vocabulary and being able to follow a script. Whilst the younger learners found it naturally more challenging due to not having studied Spanish for very long, all learners listened carefully and found the performance amusing, entertaining and beneficial. Productions like these are a special experience and one which we are lucky to have, and we look forward to welcoming them again next year. It was a good chance to hear the Spanish we have been learning in a conversation. “ Lauren B “The play was very eye-opening, as it allowed me to hear the pronunciation which will help me in the future for my speaking tests. Also, it was really good and funny.” Shanti S “The play was very comical and I understood some words and phrases. I think this would help me in the future with Listening and Speaking exams because the actors were Spanish. It was really good.” Emmeline W “I really enjoyed the play and I found the speaking pace easy to understand and that helped me feel comfortable in following the dialogue. Mock Magistrates
Well done to our wonderful Mock Magistrates team who put on an amazing performance at Basildon Crown Court on the 17th March 2018. I'm sure it must have been close, but unfortunately, the team were not selected to reach the national finals. However, as group, they were brilliant representatives for Honywood and showed how hard work, collaboration and preparation can produce outstanding results. What’s happening in school on Monday 19th March 2018 Cohort 7 were in History continuing their topic on battles and defensive positions in battle. They were taken back to AD46 when Boadicea met face to face with the Romans. They formed their own formations using shields they had made such as the Testudo and the wedge.
What’s happening in school on Monday 19th March 2018 Primary Taster Day: We were delighted to welcome two youngers from a local primary school they spent a day with C7 to see what learning is like at Honywood, they experienced PE, Science and Art. What’s happening in school on Friday 16th March 2018 We were delighted to be able to supporting our local community in interviews on Friday 16th March for our new local youth worker. What’s happening in school on Friday 16th March 2018 Our C10 Jack Petchey finalists performed their speeches to the C9 assembly on Friday 16th Mach. Some incredible performances with a range of topics from ‘writers block’, ‘speaking out loud those difficult topics’. Well done to Connie Sarti who was selected to go forward to represent the school at the local heats and we’ll done to the runner up Esme Scott.

District Football Cohort 7 District Football tournament Hedingham 2- Honywood 4 Team: Harry Arkle, Alex Banyard, Louis Byrnes, Harrison Cross, Josh Farrow, Brodie Henrici Fernandez, Taylor Hughes, Zane Kemp, James Risson, Ethan Skubich, Hadleigh Quattrici, Alfie Spurgeon, and Kieran Wilding. The team, following a 4-0 win at Rickstones, produced an excellent all round performance at Hedingham. They started the game well on top and went ahead early on through goals from Alex Banyard and Harrison Cross. Hedingham got back in the game with two long range efforts to get to half time 2-2. In the second half the defence led by Alfie Spurgeon, Hadleigh Quattrici and goalkeeper Zane Kemp prevented Hedingham scoring again. Honywood then created a number of chances and finally scored through Alex Banyard and a headed goal by Kieran Wilding. This was a good team effort with captain Ethan Skubich giving a man of the match performance.

Dean Beadle Dean Beadle has toured the UK for ten years sharing his experiences of life on the autism spectrum. In recent years he has also spoken in Denmark, Belgium, Guernsey and Ireland as well as undertaking four annual seminar tours of Australia and New Zealand.

Through his humorous and insightful speeches Dean outlines his positive outlook on his diagnosis. In 2011 Dean’s speaking was brought to a wider audience, as a clip of one of his speeches was viewed across the world on Youtube. He is also an experienced journalist, having been published in local, regional, national and international publications. Between 2008 and 2011 he worked freelance for Greenwich Time Newspaper, a local newspaper in London. As part of this he did everything from fitness columns and celebrity interviews through to concert reviews and news reports. Dean is honorary president of ‘Autism Puzzles’- a parent led charity in Cardiff, Wales.

My Learning Choices Enterprise & Solutions
MLCs this week are available to C7 learners that would like to develop their understanding of ‘what a business is’ and ‘what a franchise is’, following their first few sessions of Season 5. Sessions will also be available for C8s that would like to explore key leadership and management strategies, as well as different motivation theories.

MLCs this week will be focused on the ‘Business in the Real World’ for the C9s, focusing on revision techniques before the end of unit assessment. Sessions will also be available for C10s who would like to revise specific aspects of the course, as they continue preparing for their mock exams.

Modern Languages MLCs are available to all Cohorts for French, German and Spanish. Why not book an MFL MLC to practise your reading, writing skills in a foreign language? English How is your learning progressing in English so far this year? Take some time to review your learning: What have your most recent learning points been? What is it that you can do to improve? What’s holding you back from achieving your learning point? Are you getting the same errors highlighted in your work again and again? Don’t hesitate to book an MLC session today to ensure you move forward with your English learning Maths Do you want to boost your confidence in Maths? Please book your Maths MLC for extra support with your learning. We will be offering workshops on specific topics, as well as general maths sessions where you can bring any learning you need support with.
