Celebrating Success Anyone who was able to attend the Celebration of Learning evening last night would, without doubt, have shared in the sense of pride at the confidence, enthusiasm and commitment seen in those learners who were showcasing their learning and success stories to more than 100 visitors who came to celebrate with them. Standing on the side lines and just watching the events of the evening unfold, as well as engaging in conversation with the youngsters was a hugely rewarding experience as it allowed me to observe the way that these young people were presenting themselves. There they were, engaging in conversation and responding to questions time and time again with not only their own families but also other adults and young people who were complete strangers to them. This is something that requires a considerable amount of confidence and self-belief. They were demonstrating a level of self-awareness and ability to reflect on their learning experiences that I’m pretty sure I was not capable of when I was their age. The structure of the Celebration of Learning evening was deliberately designed to create an environment in which success and experience could be shared and the result was, once again, a joy to be part of. The nomination for a Celebration of Learning award is not something that happens by accident. Such nominations are an acknowledgement and recognition of the commitment that these young people are showing to their own learning journey, to making progress and developing their learning attributes. These are all factors which lay solid foundations upon which success can be achieved. As we enter a period where GCSE examinations are now looming on the horizon, the need for learners to commit to their learning and own their own journey is becoming ever more important. Learners in Cohort 11 are only sixty three school days away from the first of this summer’s external exams; learners in Cohort 10 are just forty four school days away from their first mock examinations, designed to prepare Cohort 10 learners for their final exams next summer. Revision and exam preparation should now be well under way for these learners. Revision should cover two things, making sure knowledge is certain and making sure it can be reproduced in the most effective way in the conditions which will be in front of you on the day of your exam. Cohort 10 learners are ideally prepared for the big tests ahead of them – yes these exams are a practice, but one of only two full practices you will have prior to your actual exams, so build your confidence by preparing thoroughly. A full programme of subject support sessions is available for Cohort 11 learners, allowing learners to access direct support from their teachers to assist their revision. Details of exactly what is on and when can be found in this week’s Gazette, and on our website at www.honywoodschool.com in the Exam Information section. The key to successful revision is to make the process of revision active; successful techniques include: • Mind mapping a topic to see the connections between different ideas and concepts • Answering past examination questions or questions in revision guides – an especially important technique when trying to re-produce knowledge under the pressure you will find in exams • Using the internet to search for key topics, making notes on the topics you are revising. • Using the voice recording apps available for the iPad may well help some of our youngsters to record key points if note-taking is not something you enjoy • Making cards up of key words, with definitions written on the back of the cards
• Explaining revision to someone at home or working alongside a friend who is revising the same topic. This could be an excellent use of ‘Face-Time’ • Using a highlighter pen to make key words and phrases stand out in a text • Using flowcharts to remember a process For all our learners, getting into the habit of active exam preparation will help maximise exam potential and ensure another generation of young people at Honywood celebrate exam success in the summer. Whilst on the subject of success, I am delighted to report one of our former learner, Joshua Bain, has been selected to represent England at the Commonwealth Games. His event is the F38 Shot, taking place on the 11th April. On behalf of everyone at Honywood, I would like to wish him well as he prepares for this exciting challenge. Jack Petchey Awards Evening Throughout the year, learners who have in some way demonstrated an outstanding achievement are recognised by the school and presented with The Jack Petchey Award. The achievement could be within school, supporting others in the wider community, or as part of their own personal development. Each January those learners, along with supporters, are invited to Braintree Arts Theatre to take part in an evening of celebration. This Thursday, our Jack Petchey winners attended the upbeat event where they were presented with their medals. Alexandra Lewis 9HTr January 2017 Alex has been nominated for showing a high level of commitment to dance and never fails to push herself to aid the dancers at Honywood, as well as showing outstanding leadership qualities. She is always ready to develop her understanding of dance, even helping out with the Cohort 10 dance group."
Millie Callaghan 9DSc, February 2017 Millie has been working incredibly hard during the last term in her studies for Food Preparation and Nutrition. She often tests herself outside of the classroom and produces technically challenging cooks in her quest to develop and grow within this subject area. Millie bravely presented to the C8 learners to help to promote the subject as part of the guided choices talks. This meant her having to step out of her comfort zone and she was one of the youngest learners to do this.
Ava Coughlan 9MMe, March 2017 Ava has shown a great attitude at both training and also at a recent competition for the Equestrian Club. She is always polite and helpful, supportive of her team members, and she has a lovely attitude to her pony. Susie is young and not as established as some of the other horses but Ava always make sure she is happy and well looked after.
Evie Stepney 8SLo April 2017 Evie beat a number of other young people in a series of bike races in which she regularly competes at the weekends. This was particularly exceptional seeing as Evie is the youngest in her current age bracket, racing against boys and girls a couple of years older than herself.
Jack Day 10FLo May 2017 While on his paper round, Jack heard an elderly lady fall and was able to assist her. He was able to get support from the lady’s neighbours who were able to take charge of the situation. Jack even returned to check on the elderly lady later that day.
Simon Donnelly 10FJo Jun 2017 Simon, who won the award for June 2017, demonstrated incredibly quick thinking in dealing with a life threatening incident. Whilst on his paper round, Simon discovered a gentleman lying on the floor in his home. The gentleman had been there for a number of hours and was extremely cold. Simon called the emergency services and remained with the man until they arrived.
Owen Tregoning 9TGr September 2017 Congratulations to Owen Tregoning 9TGr who has been awarded the Jack Petchey award for his commitment to developing his catering skills. He worked closely with our catering team last term to pass his City & Guilds Level 2 Food Safety Certificate; an excellent achievement. Owen spent time with our team developing and learning the skills to work within the catering environment and working towards the first level of the certification. Well done Owen!
Lily Vickers 10 MWo October 2017 Lily has overcome huge challenges in her dance classes since beginning her GCSE course. She has conquered anxiety and doubt, and has come back more secure and confident in her abilities. Lily has since been using her skills and knowledge to coach other learners in the school production and has been able to turn her hand to directing, choreography and performance. She should be very proud of her continuing Dance skills.
Joe Grant 10MGr November 2017 for the part he played in a film, “Run, Run as Fast as You Can.” The film has not only raised awareness of children suffering with cancer, but also has raised money for a foundation set up following the death of Margot, a little girl aged only 2 years old. Margot suffered with blood and bone marrow cancer and the foundation raises money for charities which support research and families who are also suffering.
Celebration of Learning January 2018 Each month, learners who have gone above and beyond in their commitment to learning, in and out of school, are recognised through the Celebration of Learning Awards. Nominations can be made for circumstances where learners have demonstrated commitment to learning beyond expectation, exceptional progress in the development of one or more of the MLA’s, represented the school or outside organisation in a regional or national event, or completed a challenge. Each learner who is nominated for an award receives an invitation to the Celebration of Learning Evening. The format of the Celebration of Learning Evening was changed considerably last year and we continued with this new approach of recognising the excellent contributions and successes our learners create, from what used to be a very formal event where learners were simply acknowledged for their learning success, to the wonderful environment that we saw created on Thursday 18th January. This was an environment where learners were able to showcase the work they have been nominated for, in the presence of friends and family, and share the learning success they had enjoyed. There were over 90 Learners invited to this week’s Celebration of Learning event, many of them attended along with their friends and family in addition to Learning Group Leaders and other members of staff from across the school, all of whom had the opportunity to speak to learners and ask them questions about their showcase. • What did you receive your Celebration of Learning award for? • What kind of things did you need to do to be successful with your learning/achievement? • What learning attributes (MLAs) do you think you have developed most? How has this improved you as a learner? • What have been the challenges you have faced? How did you overcome these? • What would you like to do to be a more successful learner or what are your learning goals? The showcasing included a wide range of examples that learners had completed. The confidence with which all learners approached their showcasing, and the quality of the learning conversations they engaged in was superb, and the atmosphere was filled with a sense of pride. We would like to extend our congratulations once again to all learners who received an award, and our thanks for the opportunity to celebrate with them.

What's happening in school on Monday 15th January 2018 In a C8 Enterprise and Solutions learning session, the youngsters have been given a timed task - to design a concept for a new sweet, with branding, target market, pricing strategies, advertising and methods of promotion - all in 60 minutes! At the end of this time, they should be ready to present their idea to the class and be able to answer questions about their product.
What's happening in school on Monday 15th January 2018 In a C7 Art learning session, the youngsters have been introduced to lino cutting to create images ready to print. A demonstration with clear safety guidelines and advice on how to get the best quality print image.
What’s happening in school on Tuesday 16th January 2018 C8 are very excited in Art today as they start on their Claes Oldenburg projects. Over the previous learning sessions, they have researched the American sculptors work, taken pictures of their own inspirations and drawn up draft images. Today, they start the actual task of making their very own sculptures!
What's happening in school on Thursday 18th January 2018 A trip along the top corridor this afternoon found C7 in Maths or Enterprise Solutions. In Maths, C7 youngsters were tackling probability and in Enterprise Solutions, a group were pitching their Castle Project's which they have been working on over the last couple of sessions.

Cohort 8 Inter-Learning Group Football League 8DCa are currently running an Inter-Learning Group football league each Friday lunchtime. There are 3 groups and each group plays each other in a mixed gender team (at least 2 girls playing in the team of 5). The winners of each group will qualify for a semi-final place after the group stages. The 4th semi-final place goes to the team with the highest points finishing second in one of the 3 groups. The final will then be played in the week before half term. Extra points get awarded for every member of a learning group who attends to support their team, creation of a team logo and a team name. Each week the learners will provide updates and a brief match report. The first of these is as follows. All three games were very even and everyone played well. They all put in a lot of effort during the match and the fans were very supportive. In the end PBl qualified for the semi-finals due to the support from their learning group. The results and points this week were awarded to: Games KGu v PBl = Result 2-1 APr v KGu = Result 1-0 PBl v APr = Result 1-0

Cohort 10 Futsal Report Team: Josh Ambrose (10MRa), James Baker (10KHo), Jake Banyard (10KHo), Jake Elmer (10HTr) and George Moulton (10OCi) Cohort 10 took part in the annual Futsal tournament at Notley High on Wednesday evening. There were 8 teams in two leagues. Honywood kicked off their group stage with a 1-0 win over Rickstones. Honywood continued to dominate the very fast pace of the game with a 2-0 win against the hosts, Notley High. Our last game in the group stages was against Hedingham where Honywood continued their winning streak with a 3-0 win. Next step the semi-finals. At this stage of the competition, Honywood had not conceded any goals and this was testament to the team defending well and supporting each other. Honywood played Ramsey in the semi-final and once again showed great team work and determination with a 3-1 win. The final was against Notley High and Honywood. Notley High took an early lead but Honywood came back fighting to make the match level with 4 minutes to go. Both teams pressed very hard and displayed some excellent passing and movement. Notley High struck again leaving Honywood unable to find the time to get back in the game. The final score was 2-1 to Notley High. The final was played with great spirit, friendship and mutual respect as a lot of these players play with each other in Sunday league teams!
Mock Magistrates 2018 Our Mock Magistrates team are busy during their lunch times working on their case for the upcoming competition. Each year, learners in Cohort 8 and 9 are invited to apply to be part of the Mock Magistrates team. The competition brings youngsters from across Essex and Nationally together to challenge each other in a court room to "try" the case set by the Citizenship Foundation. Learners take on roles within the team: lawyer, witness, magistrate and analyse the case to find arguments to either defend or prosecute the case. Good luck to our team!
Cohort 7 Race for the Line Ever wondered how fast a rocket car made of foam can go? Well, wonder no more, as that’s exactly what C7 learners have been finding out, using the BBC micro:bit mini-computer. "Race for the Line� BBC micro:bit Model Rocket Car Challenge encourages learners aged 11 to 16 to work together to make a foam rocket car powered by a small solid fuel rocket motor, and pit it against rival teams. On Tuesday 16th January they put their cars to the test as staff from RAF Marham (normally working on Tornados!) kindly supported the competition, powering up the foam cars to see which design was able to secure the fastest time. We wait to see the results and hope that we will have good enough times to see a group go through to the regional finals.
Learner to Learner Project On Tuesday 16th January a group of learners are visiting John Bunyan Primary school in Braintree with a learning focus question to investigate. They are working alongside primary learners, developing their collaboration and mentoring skills.
Spirit of Honywood First Ever Feel Good Fair Last Sunday, Spirit of Honywood hosted the first ever Feel Good Fair; an ethical market offering fresh fruit and veg, cosmetics, homewares, juices, street food, baked goods, kitchen essentials and more. The aim is to help people move away from the big name brands and support local producers who hand make cruelty free and either organic, fair trade or low waste items. Street food carts outside sold vegan burgers courtesy of TFI Vegan and we also had authentic Punjabi Soyabean Curry and Paratha sold from a vintage converted caravan which sold out incredibly quickly. Some people ate in the quirky outdoor seating area which included an overturned tin bath! The Fair offered a café area with Happy Cat Coffee serving up hot drinks in mugs, with communal seating, interesting literature to read and a selection of wooden children’s toys, creating a friendly environment for visitors to relax and meet new people. The atmosphere across the event was uplifting and warm. There has since been so much positive feedback received. The only other places offering this type of event that I am aware of are in Hackney and occasionally in Brighton so our visitors felt that there was something truly special beginning to take shape here in Coggeshall. Entry was free with voluntary donations and a raffle being held to help raise funds for Spirit of Honywood. This month we made around £373. All of this will be fed back into learning opportunities and events at Honywood. One of the features of the Fair is a monthly learning focus. January’s theme was Zero Waste and Braintree council were in teaching about waste reduction and recycling. Next month’s focus is Self Sufficient Home and we are teaching about renewable energy, are looking to book people who will teach about making your own tofu and oat milk and we will have a seed swap for home growers so please bring any seeds along that you have excess of. We hope you can make our future events. The Fair runs on the 2nd Sunday of each month. Stacey Lockett

Offer Japanese for beginners. Learners will have the opportunity to discover one of the most common alphabets, be able to hold a simple conversation as well as explore various cultural aspects, traditions and festivals of the Japanese society. In Dance, youngsters will have the opportunity to explore a range of dance genres, developing their dance skills and creating their own dances! The number 100 We will explore lots of events and ideas from humanities through the number 100 this term. It could be investigating the anniversary of women having the vote for 100 years now, or 100years since the end of WW1, or looking at how many people out of 100 live in rich countries and why, or how many 100s of animals are under threat around the world, what can we do about the 100s of plastic bottles we each use and throw away every year....

My Learning Choices English Please spend some time reviewing your most recent learning points in English. What is it you need to do to improve? Do you know how to move forward with your learning? We have many members of the English team available for you to book an MLC appointment with. Your 1:1 or small group MLC session could be focused on improving an aspect of your writing or tackling a particular question on the GCSE language papers. It might be that you’re finding poetry tricky or the study of a particular text is causing you concern. Whatever it is, don’t hesitate to book an MLC today.

Enterprise & Solutions MLCs this week are available to Cohort 7 learners that would like some help developing their ‘Castle Estate Challenge’ project. Key emphasis will be on managing the budget, problem solving and developing the depth and detail of your written explanations and justifications. Sessions will also be available for Cohorts 8s that would like to go over the key factors to consider when ‘locating a business’. Business Studies MLCs this week will be focused on the ‘Marketing unit’ for the Cohort 9s, with the end of unit assessments fast approaching.
